Playable Characters
- Character Groups
- The Stellaron Hunters are Team Rocket ExplanationDue to the antics and status as recurring villains of the trio, it's common to see Kafka, Blade and Silver Wolf depicted as Team Rocket.
- Alternatively, Talon, complete with repurposing the applicable comics. ExplanationThis one has to do with the specific characters involved, being a classy spider-themed Ms. Fanservice, a younger "gremlin-y" hacker girl, and the sole male being a perpetual regenerator who's obsessed with death. Additionally, Kafka and Widowmaker share the same Japanese voice actress. While Sam isn't quite as one-to-one as the first three, "he"'s still a robotic character with a prominent diving punch as his most destructive attack.
- The Stonehearts are Magical Girls ExplanationThe Ten Stonehearts each wield a different precious stone which allows them to transform and channel powers of an Emanator of Preservation, and when they do so, they have an Invocation line. It is not hard to think of Magical Girls.
- Topaz's transformation ExplanationIn "Future Market", Topaz almost fought the Astral Express crew. Later on, when the players learned about Cornerstones, they either expressed disappointment at not being able to see Topaz transform for a boss fight, or realized how screwed they would have been if Topaz did fight them, since her Cornerstone is still complete and the crew didn't have the aid of an Emanator.
- The Robin-Boothill friendshipExplanationThe 2.2 patch debuting both the Spoiled Sweet Robin and The Gunslinger Boothill led to many people joking about the sheer contrast between them, which in turn led to fanart of the two polar opposites having an Odd Friendship and hanging out together.
- Star Rail's BarbenheimerExplanationThe banner pairing was also compared to the previous year's Barbenheimer, with Robin as Barbie and Boothill as Oppenheimer. Eventually, given the current state of Penacony and Boothill's goofiness, people also began joking that the opposite is more appropriate.
- Penacony Birbs ExplanationPlayers noticed how many of the characters in the Penacony plot have avian Animal Motifs: Black Swan and Robin being their namesakes, Aventurine a peacock, Ratio an owl, and of course, Chicken Wing Boy. It is common to see the cast depicted as a flock of birds.
- Space HaikavehExplanationAfter Aventurine and Dr. Ratio were seen interacting, they not only became a very popular ship but also drew comparisons to Alhaitham and Kaveh from Genshin Impact, a popular ship from that game known as Haikaveh or Kavetham. Both ships consist of a blond, extravagantly dressed man with a traumatic backstory concerning losing his family, and a buff scholar who despite his tendency for rudeness and brutal honesty, shows hints of a soft side and care towards the former despite their constant bickering.
- Haikaveh's son and son-in-lawExplanationBecause both Dr. Ratio and Aventurine show physical similarities towards both Alhaitham and Kaveh, fans of both ships commonly depict one of the former pair as the child of the latter two.
- Acheron
- Raiden I ExplanationThe Raiden Shogun, an alternate counterpart of Raiden Mei from HI3rd's sister game, Genshin Impact, is named "Raiden Ei", with the "M" from Mei's name removed. Fans only thought it would be fitting for the following alternate Raiden counterpart in Star Rail, Acheron, be called "Raiden I", taking the "e" off as well.
- Adult Seele/The Cooler Seele ExplanationOnce Acheron's character design was revealed, it didn't take long for people to notice she looks extremely similar to Seele, with almost the same outfit and nearly the same color palette.
- Acheron getting lost ExplanationIt is common to see images of Acheron randomly edited into memes otherwise unrelated to her, to emphasise on just how lost she is. The trend has also spread to memes on sister games Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd.
- Female Zoro ExplanationAcheron being a Master Swordswoman with No Sense of Direction led some to draw comparisons to One Piece's Zoro, who shares these two traits.
- Acheron in The Backrooms Explanation An image◊ of Acheron in the famous Eldritch Location, looking confused as to how she got there, is often posted on fora unrelated to Star Rail to joke that she's ended up there by mistake. The Cosmodyssey event turns this into an Ascended Meme with one of its Board Encounters involving Acheron, where if you get the lowest roll, you end up leading her into a "monotone yellow space".
- Wrong train/Couldn't find your game Explanation Many players who lost their 50/50s when rolling for Acheron attributed it to her not being able to find the train or ending up in different games while they rolled for it. This led to a lot of comics depicting such.
- "For you, the day Acheron graced your Annihilation Gang..." ExplanationThe "Rondo Across Countless Kalpas" animated short sees Black Swan attempt to interrogate Acheron about her defeat of the Annihilation Gang, only for her to ask "Who are the Annihilation Gang?". This quickly led to memes quoting M. Bison's infamous But for Me, It Was Tuesday speech.
- "Now I'm a little motivated!" ExplanationDue to her "silent but deadly" personality, her being an Iaijutsu Practitioner, her skill briefly tearing reality apart, and her ultimate transforming her akin to Devil Trigger, Acheron is mostly associated with Vergil from the Devil May Cry series... and the rest is history.
- Acheron is so OP, she literally breaks the game ExplanationOne of the developers stated during the 2.1 livestream that the game used to crash whenever Acheron used her Ultimate during testing. Fans took one of "Vergil is OP" memes, and pasted unto it.
- Wasting jades on standard Star Rail Passes Explanation When someone on r/AcheronMainsHSR wasted up to 100 pulls worth of jades on standard tickets by mistake, it became a running joke on the subreddit to pretend they were unable to see the difference between the two.
- Pulling for Acheron with whatever except Special Passes Explanation The above meme taken to its logical conclusion: lots of people posting their saved freemium currency from any other mobile game, or even weirder like stacks of paper painted like money, and acting like it will get them Acheron. This later leaked to the official subreddit.
- Acheron's Trick Snack addiction ExplanationAcheron's Technique instantly kills any overworld mobs, making it a very spammable way to get rid of trash mobs in your way. Naturally, this consumes a lot of Technique points in the process, and the Trick Snack consumable is easily the most spammable and abundant way of restoring said points. And so, jokes about Acheron becoming addicted to eating them ensued.
- "Nihility" Pathstrider ExplanationAcheron is a Nihility pathstrider... who basically plays nothing like what a Nihility character usually plays like (mainly with DoTs and inflicting stat debuffs), instead playing like a very aggressive hypercarry DPS who mostly relies on her fellow Nihility pathstriders to further boost her offense. Indeed, she plays closer to an Erudition character, such as Serval.
- 並ラーメン (Nami ramen)... Explanation Meaning "regular (i.e size/toppings) ramen", this is what Japanese players heard when Acheron activates her Ultimate (it should be 涙雨/"namida ame", localized in English as "I weep for the departed"). Fans then call her Ultimate "regular ramen" or depict her eating a bowl of ramen.
- Argenti
- "We are the exception!" Explanation (spoilers)As an extension of the many Jujutsu Kaisen memes spawned after the release of the Penacony chapter, people began to joke about Argenti being the Aoi Todo to the Trailblazer's Yuji Itadori, most prominently with the male trailblazer (Caelus), who shares a VA with Yuji.
- Flirting with the potted plant ExplanationDuring the first encounter with Argenti, as well as in his character trailer, he effusively praises the beauty of a potted fern in the Express's lounge, prompting many players to joke that he's flirting with the thing.
- Asta
- Hoshiboshi~ ExplanationMuch like Herta's "Kuru Kuru", you can expect to hear Asta say this a lot in the Japanese dub when her Ultimate is spammed.
- She's basically Mona ExplanationDue to Asta being an astronomer with terrible money management, fans usually compared her with Mona, who is an astrologist with similarly bad money management skills. Bonus points for both sharing the same English voice actress- Felecia Angelle.
- Aventurine
- Adventurine ExplanationCompared to Topaz or Diamond, other members of the IPC, Aventurine isn't a very well-known precious stone. As a result, many people end up misreading or mishearing his name as "Adventurine", after associating it with the word, "adventure".
- Star Rail's Childe ExplanationAventurine and Tartaglia are both wealthy, handsome young men who are Affably Evil, being one of the top members of their respective organizations, has a One-Winged Angel transformation, and has a boss fight centered around them, complete with a difficulty nerf. The comparisons between these two were obviously made.
- GOATventurine / Aventurine is Furina ExplanationSimilar to Furina from Genshin Impact, during the entirety of 2.0, Aventurine was depicted as an unlikeable Corrupt Corporate Executive, which caused many players to dislike him. In 2.1, the Trailblaze Mission made almost everyone gain respect for him, leading to Aventurine being hailed as a goated chad all while the players who initially disliked him apologised to him.
- Pre-nerf AventurineExplanation (2. 1 spoilers)Aventurine's boss version turned out to be too difficult on release, prompting a quick nerf to one of this skills. Players who managed to complete his boss fight day 1 claim bragging rights over defeating his pre-nerf version, and will frequently tell latecomers about how powerful he is.
- "Doctor, you're HUGE!" ExplanationDuring a joint stream hosted by Molly Zhang, Seele's English voice actress, where the English voice cast pull for Aventurine and his light cone, Howard Wang (Luka's VA) suggests that Camden Sutkowski (Aventurine's VA) say the line "Doctor, you're huge!" (A line said by Aventurine from the Penacony Trailblaze Mission where he enters the sandpit, shrinking in the process, and comments on how he can see a giant Dr. Ratio from afar, though it could also mean something else) as a summoning ritual. Camden says the line, resulting in him, Howard, Molly and Emily Sun (Clara's VA) all pulling Aventurine's light cone at the same time. The phrase would later claim more victims in Andrew Russell, Emi Lo and Sam Slade (Boothill, Ruan Mei and Topaz's VAs, respectively), entering meme status as a guaranteed way to get Aventurine and/or his light cone.
- Qingque's rival ExplanationDue to Aventurine canonically being a gambler, and Qingque's playstyle is mostly RNG (and how mahjong games often involve betting), players often bet that these two would come face-to-face in a game of chance.
- The religion of Aventurism ExplanationShortly after Aventurine's release, many voice actors, including Emily Sun (Clara), Sam Slade (Topaz), Molly Zhang (Seele), Howard Wang (Luka), Alejandro Saab (Jing Yuan), Emi Lo (Ruan Mei), Alice Himora (Robin), Nicholas Leung (Dan Heng), Daman Mills (Blade), and even Camden Sutkowski himself (Aventurine) all revealed themselves to be Aventurine simps. It eventually resulted in this post where everyone is worshiping the man.
- Black Swan
- The Primogem Lady / Welkin Mommy? ExplanationPlayers were quick to joke that Black Swan looks a lot like the woman who gives out Primogems when players buy the Blessing of the Welkin Moon in Genshin Impact. Black Swan's outfit also has a design beneath her breasts that looks somewhat like a Primogem.
- "Black Swan lied to us!" Explanation"A Revisiting of Past Dreams" trailer shows cards that represents future playable characters in certain order. Players assume that Black Swan teases upcoming banner placements in future updates, with Sparkle, Acheron, and Aventurine's respective banners are all confirmed to be appearing in the same order as shown in the trailer. However when Robin's drip marketing was released before Firefly's, coupled that with Boothill's unexpected announcement, this reaction immediately started popping up on social media.
- F*cked around & found out ExplanationThe "Rondo Across Countless Kalpas" animated short sees Black Swan attempt to peer into Acheron's memories, only to be subjected to an utterly brutal Mind Rape, where she is continually ripped apart by what she discovers inside Acheron's mind. She is left shaken and wanting nothing to do with Acheron anymore. Similar jokes such as "the abyss gazes back" or "the predator becomes the prey" are also common.
- "Well... mark me down as scared and horny." ExplanationRelated to the aforementioned animated short, this caption was applied to a frame where Black Swan, having just finished her "dance" with Acheron, is gasping for breath after her Mind Rape. It quickly became memetic due to the idea that Black Swan might've been turned on by the experience.
- "Know your place, fool." ExplanationAnother crossover meme from Jujutsu Kaisen, people started to compare Black Swan looking into Acheron's memories to Mahito attempting to transmutate Sukuna's soul as they both ended up terrified from the experience and wanting to avoid a repeat of it at all costs.
- Blade
- Blade being healed. ExplanationDue to him being mara-struck for the rest of his eternal life, Blade has made it his goal to unsubscribe from life. It's pretty much Black Comedy for fans to constantly have a healer with him in the party, most frequently Luocha for automatically healing any party member with less than 50% HP and his banner being just before Blade's. Some even suggest to have everyone except Blade on your team be a healer just to torture this poor guy. He grumbles in disappointment often when getting revived or healed, which is why others opt for Bailu for her revive and her adorableness being a stark contrast to Blade's character being edgy to some degree. It's a common joke in the fanart community to depict Blade running away from being healed. Even the voice actors joined in on the fun.
- Boothill
- Arlecchino is that you? / Genderbent Arlecchino ExplanationBeing a tall handsome man with long white hair containing black streaks, the comparisons with Arlecchino from Genshin Impact was inevitable. It helps they were drip marketed in a close period of time.
- Mommy Boothill ExplanationSince Arlecchino is often referred to as "Father" in Genshin, fans thought it would be fitting to call Boothill "Mother" because of his character design being very similar to hers.
- White-and-black saturation/family ExplanationRelatedly, Honkai Impact 3rd has 1) Onyx Simurgh, one of the costumes for Fu Hua's Hawk of the Fog battlesuit, 2) the upcoming Crane of Taixuan, a special costume for her Fenghuang of Vicissitude suit, 3) Coralie, from Part 2 of the game. All of them have white and black hair, and outfit in case of 2). While 1) has been around for a long time, 2) was released in Chinese server a few weeks after Arlecchino's announcement, and 3) has been around for a few weeks prior to said announcement. Fans then believe that they have "connections" or that this is a marketing strategy, and some of them picture the characters together as a "family" of sorts. Occasionally Da Wei himself is added as he also has a white streak on his otherwise black hair.
- Ashiya Douman made it into this game.ExplanationFate/Grand Order players have compared Boothill's design to Ashiya Douman's design.
- Who? ExplanationWhen drip marketing for version 2.2 began and revealed Robin, people were confident that the next character revealed would be either Firefly or Sam, both of whom were highly anticipated and had plenty of story content already. When the reveal was Boothill instead - a character who had zero presence in the game thus far, and was in fact a complete unknown - people were confused, to say the least.
- Boothill's theme song Explanation (NSFW Warning)Due to Boothill fitting the cowboy archetype and the hilarity that inevitably ensued from finally having a space outlaw in-game, many were quick to jump ship by making Dixon Dallas' "Good Lookin'" his unofficial theme song. Fans of him, amongst others who poke fun at the cowboy, are bound to quote the first few lines of the chorus whenever he appears in online content. Hilariously enough, Jing Yuan's English voice actor, Alejandro Saab, jumped on the bandwagon by trolling his viewers on-stream, claiming that Boothill's theme song was leaked content. See for yourself.
- HORY BABY ExplanationBoothill has an issue with his Translator Microbes that doesn't let him swear, replacing any foul language with "cutesy" words. During his first voice-only appearance in 2.1, the Japanese translation rendered one of his swears as "holy baby", exclaimed in magnificent, hammy Engrish. It quickly caught on as the line associated with Boothill.
- Save a horse, ride a cowboy ExplanationThe rallying cry of fans thirsting for Boothill; the meaning of "ride" is left to the imagination of the reader.
- Clara (and Svarog)
- "Berserker!" ExplanationSvarog and Clara's Huge Guy, Tiny Girl dynamic has been compared a lot to Berserker and Illya von Einzbern from the Fate Series. This resulted in viral meme clips having Illya's "Berserker!" scream edited into Clara's Ultimate animation of calling out Svarog.
- "Svarog-car", "Subarog" ExplanationThis has also led to meme edits and fanarts converting Svarog into a vehicle for Clara to ride on, just like the "Berser-car" gag from Carnival Phantasm.
- Clara and Svarog ExplanationThe reveal of Topaz and Numby has the two of them specifically listed as one unit. Since Svarog makes up the entirety of Clara's skillset, fans have requested that Clara be renamed as "Clara and Svarog".
- Svarog vs. Destruction Trotter ExplanationWith her talent, Svarog counterattacks whenever an enemy hits Clara. Meanwhile the Destruction Trotter performs a counterattack that deals damage to all party members when getting hit. Pitting those two against each other and they start taking turns counterattacking one another until one of them is defeated, all while risking letting other party members die from the Destruction Trotter's AoE attacks. Thus memes about Svarog and the Destruction Trotter duking it out at the expense of everyone else were born.
- Clara thirsting for Aventurine ExplanationSoon after the release of Penacony, Emily Sun, the English VA for Clara, became known for being utterly smitten with Aventurine, to the point of pausing her playthrough for multiple minutes to espouse his good qualities every time he was on screen. And so, fans made jokes depicting Clara, an underaged child, gushing over Aventurine, an incredibly handsome man who is a lot older than her, with Svarog being disapproving of the whole ordeal. Compilations of Emily's reactions even reached the Chinese audience via subtitled videos on BiliBili.
- Voice actors gushing over Aventurine, even himself ExplanationRelated, though not to quite the same extent as Emily's, Sam Slade and Camden Sutkowski, the voice actors for Topaz and Aventurine himself respectively, also had their strong reactions to the man, particularly the official art of him in a half-unbuttoned shirt, leaving the lower half of his torso naked, go viral.
- "Fuck! Mr. Svarog, crease his Jordan's!" Explanation Comes from a viral Tik Tok video by VA & Impressionist Cela, that also gained traction as a highly popular Tik Tok sound.
- Dan Heng
- "This sanctuary, is but a vision! BREAK!" / "This sanctuary, is butter vision! BREAD!" ExplanationThe former is Dan Heng's Ultimate voice line. If you didn't get much DPS-oriented units early on and settled with using Dan Heng for the time being, expect to hear this a lot during your battles. The latter is when fans decided to intentionally mishear his voiceline as "butter", and rolled with it as a joke.
- "The Cooler Dan Heng" Explanation (spoilers)Referring to Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae, his 5-star Imaginary Destruction version, parodying "the cooler Daniel" meme. Aside from being stronger, fans opine that he also looks more attractive in this form.
- Having a better vacation than we are Explanation (Penacony spoilers!)The animated short "Harmony Greets the New Year" shows Dan Heng attending a New Year festival on the Xianzhou Luofu and seemingly enjoying himself. Seeing as this followed up right after the traumatic events of the Penacony storyline, players quickly started joking that Dan Heng was the one getting the real vacation.
- When will Dan Heng leave the Express? ExplanationSome players noticed how Dan Heng rarely leaves the Astral Express after the Xianzou Luofu storyline. And so, fans have wondered when will he be leaving the Express once more.
- Dr. Ratio
- L+Ratio ExplanationAs soon as he was drip-marketed, players started joking about Dr. Ratio's name, referencing the L+Ratio meme. In addition, he is making an L with his thumb and index in his splash art, and when calculating the trajectory of the giant falling column in his Ultimate. This meme became even funnier when it was announced to be given for free in version 1.6, leading to Star Rail players interpreting that as Dr. Ratio giving an L+Ratio to sister game Genshin Impact, notorious for its bad anniversary rewards.
- Gigachad / W+Ratio ExplanationDr. Ratio barged into the version 1.6 livestream, announced that he would be a free character, refused to elaborate and left.
- Dr. Ratio making himself free to avoid getting "Yoimiya'ed" ExplanationAlternatively, one could interpret Dr. Ratio's claims about his banner arrangements being "pitiful" is that he is fully aware that his banner is unfortunately sandwiched between characters many players desired (not unlike how Yoimiya suffered in regards to her banner placements), namely Ruan Mei and Black Swan as new units as well as Kafka and Imbibitor Lunae as reruns, and so he decided to offer himself as a free 5★ character to make sure every player has him in their roster.
- L+Bathwater ExplanationDr.Ratio's signature Light Cone "Baptism of Pure Thought", sees him relaxing in a bathtub, being Mr. Fanservice and a Bathing Beauty he is, it's no wonder fans meme the heck out of him by selling his bathwater.
- Nude Dr. Ratio ExplanationAnother shot of Dr. Ratio in a bathtub came in his 3D-animated trailer. Fans exploded at the realisation that there is a naked model of Dr. Ratio at the Hoyoverse headquarters.
- Fail... Get out!/Zero points... Next! ExplanationDr. Ratio's lines whenever he triggers his talent. Like Herta's "Kuru Kuru", Dr. Ratio will be frequently saying these lines.
- Tsundere RatioExplanationEven without the shipping goggles, Dr Ratio has an... interesting relation with Aventurine, where he outwardly keeps insulting the man and bemoaning having to interact with him, yet still clearly cares about his well-being. This behavior reached its peak in the Keeping Up With Star Rail video on Aventurine, where Ratio gets audibly flustered when Owlbert implies that the two have mutual respect for one another, and passes on that Aventurine was the one who asked for Ratio to narrate due to the man's intellect. Afterwards, people started joking that Ratio is tsundere for Aventurine.
- Firefly/Sam
- The amount of Kamen Rider jokes and memes made about Sam would fill about a fourth of this page.
- I finally understand how Otto feels now / Thus Spoke Trailblazer Explanation (spoilers!)The Penacony Trailblaze Missions heavily build up the Trailblazer and Firefly's relationship, which ends with Firefly's death at the hands of Something Unto Death. Players upset by this began to sympathize with Otto Apocalypse from Honkai Impact 3rd, who was broken by the death of Kallen Kaslana and did many, many horrible things in an attempt to bring her back. Many memes comparing or dressing up the Trailblazer (mostly Caelus) as Otto cropped up from this, especially ones taken from the video "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" and the associated theme song "Regression". That is until it was revealed that Firefly is alive.
- Angry Firefly / Firefly Pouting ExplanationIt's very common for fans to put Firefly in a cutesy angry face. This resulted in several fanarts of her wearing the exact expression.
- That other Sam? ExplanationSam's design bears more than a little resemblance to the ARS suit from Vanquish, which is wielded by a similarly-named Sam Gideon. Jokes about their similarities were inevitable.
- It's the only thing I know for real ExplanationSimilar to the above, Sam being a man in a robot suit and a Memetic Badass led players to draw comparisons to Sam from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, complete with quoting MGRR Sam's famous theme song, and suggesting that the Star Rail Sam may be Brazillian. As a bonus, he also gets to fight a "Raiden".
- Playable Firefly soon? ExplanationDue to her major role in the Penacony story arc, players were eager to see Firefly as a playable character. But when Star Rail announced Robin and Boothill as playable character, fans wondered when she is going to be playable. Sure enough, Firefly was finally confirmed to be a playable character in version 2.3 (i.e 1 version after Boothill).
- It's Samover ExplanationCoincidentely related to the above. Sam was widely anticipated to be released as a playable character in version 2.2, so when Boothill was revealed instead, Sam's fanbase despaired. But it died down once he is finally becomes playable alongside Firefly as a single unit. Relatedly, the meme was also used by Sam's early fanbase when it was confirmed that "Sam" is the name of Firefly's armor.
- Samus? Explanation (MASSIVE spoilers!)When it was revealed that Sam is actually Firefly, players began joking that "Sam" was two letters off "Samus".
- Chuuni Firefly Explanation (spoilers!) After Sam is revealed to be Firefly, fans start joking that Firefly spends her time coming up with cool one-liners to say as Sam due to how different their attitude and personality is, with several fanarts depicting her as either being unabashedly chuuni or merely acting and being teased about it by the Trailblazer, much to her embarrassment. Her EN VA reading Sam's lines only adds fuel to the fire, because the lines just loses its edge when spoken with Firefly's voice.
- Magical Girl Firefly / Henshin Explanation (spoilers) With her reveal as Sam, people started to compare Firefly to a Kamen Rider or to call her a magical girl due to her fiery detransformation sequence at the end of the 2.1 story.
- Hell yeah! ExplanationDerived from a pre-existing meme, "guys will see this and say 'hell yeah!'". After someone posted a screenshot of Sam with the whole meme as the caption to Reddit, and half the comments were just "hell yeah!", it's become habitual for any Sam-related post to have at least one comment repeating the phrase, followed by a string of "hell yeah!"s.
- Firefly did nothing wrong Explanation (MASSIVE Spoilers!)Shortly after the reveal that the adorable and seemingly innocent Firefly was the Stellaron Hunter Sam, who committed MANY crimes right before the beginning of the story, fans were quick to make excuses to defend her actions, leading to jokes that she absolutely didn't do anything wrong (despite her canon characterization being unhappy about her ruthlessness due to her not knowing to become anything other than the Stellaron Hunters' solution for widespread destruction).
- "God forbid women have hobbies" ExplanationIn relation to the above, some fans argued that her war crimes were a large part of her appeal, saying this phrase.
- Back for her 20,000 credits Explanation (Spoilers!)Midway through the 2.0 story, the player has the option of buying food with Firefly's money, and spending all 20,000 credits leads to the implication that they have just wasted all of her savings. Once version 2.1 revealed that she and Sam are the same person, some players took to joking that the Sam boss fight is Firefly beating you up to get her money back, or that now that she revealed her true face, she will demand that you return her 20K credits.
- Yandere Firefly Explanation (Spoilers!)With the amount of Ship Tease she has with the Trailblazer and the reveal that she is Sam, fans made jokes about Firefly willing to destroy anyone who gets between her and the Trailblazer, due to her being a Person of Mass Destruction.
- Firefly, the guardian girlfriend Explanation (Spoilers!)On a similar, albeit less malicious, note than the above meme, fans agreed that trying to hurt the Trailblazer while Firefly is around is a terrible idea because she would obliterate whoever attempted to do so.
- "I have two sides" / Firefly's gap moe Explanation (Spoilers!)The personalities of Firefly and Sam were drastically different despite her being the person beneath the armor, many jokes about Firefly being a cute and nice girl one minute and then a ruthless killer the next were eventually made.
- When Nevermore starts playing / *Heavy Metal Intensifies* Explanation (Also Spoilers!) Sam's boss theme, "Nevermore" and especially the initial guitar riff and heavy pounding noises are used to punctuate or emphasize when Firefly goes into "Sam" mode, generally in the style of the earlier Doom meme around "The Only One They Fear is You".
- Forgot to turn on her voice changer ExplanationWhenever Firefly talks inside Sam's armor, her voice changes to sound just like an actual man in a suit of armor. Then Analesa Fisher, Firefly's VA, read out Sam's lines during the One Night in Penacony offline event, and the fans ran with it. It eventually came full circle when Adin Rudd, Sam's VA, read out Firefly's lines for some hilariously blursed content where Firefly forgot to take off the armor or voice changer.
- The wrong Firefly ExplanationSince Firefly and Genshin Impact's Lumine share the same Japanese name "Hotaru" (although the former uses katakana and the latter kanji), the accidental coincidence is not lost among some players. Cue the Trailblazer mistaking Lumine for Firefly in many memes.
- Firefly loves sharks ExplanationThe instant it was discovered that Analesa Fisher, Firefly’s English voice actress, loved sharks, fan artists immediately started drawing Firefly either with a shark toy, wearing a shark suit, or just straight up interacting with sharks.
- Fu Xuan
- Dehya, but she's actually good / Dehya, if she was in the right game ExplanationFu Xuan's skillset centers around damage redirection and mitigation, similar to Dehya from Genshin Impact. However, Fu Xuan's defensive role is significantly more essential in Star Rail's turn-based gameplay, whereas Dehya struggles to find a niche in Genshin's open-world gameplay, making the former a Game-Breaker while the latter is a Low-Tier Letdown, leading fans of Dehya to lament this fact.
- So true bestie *pegs you* ExplanationA picture of a Super-Deformed Fu Xuan on top of Qingque bearing that caption has become popular in the community, usually posted whenever Fu Xuan is brought up.
- Gallagher
- That button is holding on for dear life ExplanationAs soon as Gallagher's warp art was revealed, fans could not help but notice that the shirt he's wearing is exceedingly tight, and held in place by only a single button. Praise for the button (or, alternatively, desire for it to snap) became common, as did comparisons to Topaz and Genshin Impact's Clorinde, both of whom have a similar "issue".
- Gallagher is SUS!! Explanation (MASSIVE Spoilers!)When it was revealed that Gallagher was an impostor among The Family (who took on the properties of more than 52 Family members at once), and the one who (indirectly) killed Robin, players wasted no time bringing up a plethora of Among Us related jokes whenever Gallagher was mentioned.
- "A totally normal guy" / "Least suspicious character" Explanation (MASSIVE Spoilers!)Before the release of v2.1, Gallagher was officially described in the 2.1 livestream by Shaoji as "the only villager in a game of werewolf". However, with the reveal that he is the one behind "Death" and that he is the serial killer in Penacony, players immediately began joking over how the description was yet another Red Herring.
- I'm Thirteen. Explanation (MASSIVE Spoilers!)When March 7th asks Gallagher about his age, he replies with a nonchalant "Thirteen". Jokes about how the visibly middle-aged Gallagher was actually a child immediately began to surface afterwards. However, it's later revealed to have been Foreshadowing to Gallagher's true nature and his relation to "Death", as 13 is the number of the Death Arcana in the tarot deck.
- No Gallagher! Don't give beer to children!ExplanationGallagher's healing animation shows him opening a can of drinks for his allies. The hilarious thing about it is that many would assume it was beer and the fact that you can run him in a team full of characters well under legal drinking age (such as Hook, Bailu, and Huo Huo). Eventually someone plastered this phrase onto the screenshot of Walter White screaming through the car window.
- Gepard
- Gepardposting/“Trailblazer! Continue the Landau bloodline!” ExplanationContinuing the "Continue the X bloodline" tradition set by Chris Redfield, SilverAsh, and Kamisato Ayato, this time it's Gepard asking Caelus to marry his sister Serval in order to continue the Landau bloodline, or vice versa in the case of Stelle.
- Gepard's art style. ExplanationGepard & Pela are both in charge of drawing the wanted posters that you see in Belobog. Pela's renditions of the characters are in the style of 90s anime bishies while Gepard's are... remarkable in a different way. There are a number of fanart trying out his artstyle.
- I have a sister. Two of them, actually. Explanation (spoilers)Aventurine is widely considered to outdo Gepard in just about everything, from shielding, utility, to damage, and fans of Aventurine quickly took to portraying him mocking the Silvermane captain about it. Gepard then promptly shoots back that at least his sisters, Serval and Lynx, are still alive, while Aventurine's beloved sister was killed when he was still a child, to the Stoneheart's anguish.
- Guinaifen
- Breaking stuff with her chest ExplanationGuinaifen asks in her character reveal if someone wants to see her break a stone slab with her chest. Though this was likely a grammar mistake in translation from Chinese to English (as she means laying down with a stone slab on top of her and letting someone else break it), breast jokes surrounding this phrase were inevitable.
- Star Rail's Yoimiya ExplanationGuinaifen is a Fire-type Genki Girl who works with fireworks, so comparisons to Yoimiya from Genshin Impact were obvious.
- SEX ALARM Explanation (NSFW Warning)When Guinaifen's Ultimate animation was first previewed, someone thought it would be funny to put the caption "SEX ALARM" over her ringing her gong. The GIF started spreading throughout the Star Rail subreddits, particularly r/okbuddytrailblazer, and had spread enough to the point where Guinaifen's appearance in the 1.4 livestream was met with spams of "SEX ALARM". This GIF is later used in some horny comments since.
- Ring it. Good boy. ExplanationIt's a picture of a smirking Guinaifen daring someone to post the "SEX ALARM" GIF, and when someone does post it, there's promptly a reply of the same picture with the caption "Good boy".
- Don't ring it. Bad boy! ExplanationA less common variant of the above meme is a picture of a frowning Guinaifen demanding that no one post the "SEX ALARM" GIF, replying with "Bad boy" when someone inevitably posts it anyway.
- Expensive Milk Powder ExplanationGuinaifen's name in Chinese is 桂乃芬, which sounds similar to 贵奶粉, meaning expensive milk powder.
- Herta
- Kuru Kuru ExplanationHerta's Japanese line "Kuru Kuru" (loosely means "spiiiiiin"; the English dub equivalent is "Time to twirl!") is heard whenever her follow-up attack procs. In addition to her being a free character, the voiceline is so frequently heard that it has become memetic, to the point of spawning a popular Stupid Statement Dance Mix.
- NIGASANAI WA KURU KURU NIGASANAI WA KURURINExplanation"Nigasanai wa" is the line Himeko says in the JP dub when she uses her follow-up attack (rendered as "You won't get away!" in English). This began its traction in the earliest EXP-farming Calyx, where the enemies are all The Goomba who are weak to ice and fire (Herta and Himeko's elements); Himeko's AoE attacks lower enemies to below half-health to trigger Herta's follow-up attack, and Herta's follow-up attack breaks ice-weak enemies to trigger Himeko's follow-up attack. This results in long stretches of nothing but the both of them spamming their attacks (and repeating their lines) over and over again, massacring enemy waves in the process as if activating auto-battle. This becomes popular again in Pure Fiction, particularly if the enemies' lineup are primarily fire or ice-weak.
- Chump Change / Tax Evasion ExplanationDuring Topaz's trailer, "Expert Tutorial", Topaz shows Herta that she owes the IPC a huge debt. Herta simply turns around, calling the amount "chump change" (in the English dub), and makes Asta pay the bill, causing many to call her out for tax evasion.
- Himeko
- Himeko's pizza cutter/ice cream sandwich ExplanationIt's not uncommon for fans to call Himeko's circular sawblade a "pizza cutter" due to its shape, or the briefcase containing said saw an "ice cream sandwich".
- Seeing Himeko die again Explanation (Honkai Impact 3rd spoilers!)Since Himeko is the Alternate Self of Murata Himeko from Honkai Impact 3rd, it has become a joke that Honkai players would have to see her die again.
- "Never let you go" Explanation (Honkai Impact 3rd spoilers!)Related to the above, fans often put "Nightglow" playing in the background whenever Himeko is around, mostly because that song is associated with her deceased HI3rd counterpart, Murata Himeko. "Never let you go" is the first line from the chorus of "Nightglow".
- GET BACK ON THE TRAIN!!! ExplanationSimilarly to the above, fans' reaction to Shaoji writing the story of Penacony and Himeko visiting it is to just go off telling her to go back on the Express just for her own safety.
- Jade
- Playable gacha currency ExplanationJade shares her name with Stellar Jade, the game's currency for rolling the gacha. Players instantly began joking how managing to roll Jade would grant you a hefty supply of Stellar Jades.
- Jingliu
- ≧ヮ≦ ExplanationIn gameplay previews of Jingliu, she had Empty Eyes while attacking with her ultimate, fitting her tenuous sanity. When Jingliu's gameplay was officially previewed in English, however, her eyes were given a glint, making her look more normal and less unhinged. This led to both jokes and outrage before the eye change was clarified to have been an error. One particular joke was changing Jingliu's face into a cutesy happy expression which was completely unlike her, creating an amusing reaction image in the process. Several other permutations then followed.
- Dreamworks Jingliu ExplanationOne shot in Jingliu's trailer has her resting on a crescent moon, which bears a resemblance to Dreamworks Animations' logo. Jokes were made at how Jingliu was the Dreamworks kid all grown up.
- Jing Yuan
- HELP ME, MR. LIGHTNING-LORD! ExplanationSince Jing Yuan's Lightning-Lord makes up the bulk of his damage output, fans started interpreting him similar to using Clara's Ultimate, crying out for their guardian to help them and dish out the pain.
- Jing Yuan's Bizarre Adventure ExplanationIn the Japanese dub, Jing Yuan is voiced by Daisuke Ono who voiced Jotaro Kujo. For bonus points, Lightning Lord works like a Stand.
- Mid YuanExplanationWhen first released, Jing Yuan was considered a top-tier DPS character, but as new damage dealers were released, he steadily began to drop off from the highest spots in most tier lists, quickly growing in a meme among the community, where every single new patch, character and change to the game is joked to be a further nerf to poor Jing Yuan (though, in reality, he's perfectly viable and the meta is highly fluctuating).
- King Yuan ExplanationA retort to the above meme used by people who think allegations of him being average or bad are overblown, or by people who wish to celebrate Jing Yuan's increasing meta relevance in the face of various meta changes and buffs that improve his viability, especially with the release of Pure Fiction.
- Jing Yuan is Yanqing's father. ExplanationDespite Jing Yuan never calling Yanqing his son, but rather his pupil, their dynamics are often compared to a father-son relationship, especially whenever the former scolds the latter for being too impulsive. There are many fanarts depicting them bonding in hilarious familial scenarios as a result. Even his English voice actor (Alejandro Saab AKA Cy Yu) notices the pattern and refers to Yanqing as his son and says dad jokes in his voice during gameplay streams. Jing Yuan is also one of the male characters in the game cited as a "Daddy" type by many fans, as one of the examples in Fan Nickname.
- Pregnant Jing Yuan ExplanationThe gap between Jing Yuan's release and his first rerun being almost exactly nine months did not go unnoticed by fans, which quickly led to memes among the community about Jing Yuan being pregnant. It even reached Meme Acknowledgment status, with his English voice actor Alejandro Saab reacting with bewilderment to the memes on Twitter, and other voice actors from the franchise trolling him about it.
- I am the reinforcements!ExplanationA Badass Boast Jing Yuan makes when arriving to aid Dan Heng and Bailu during the latter's character quest, oft repeated whenever Jing Yuan's power is discussed. When the trailer for version 2.2 seemingly showed Jing Yuan coming to the players' aid in Penacony, the line was brought back by his excited fandom.
- The general going on vacationExplanationAfter version 2.1 let the players call Jing Yuan to Penacony for a group photo, and then the trailer for version 2.2 showed Jing Yuan in a main plot cutscene (despite the main plot still being in Penacony), people started joking that Jing Yuan is taking any and all opportunities to go on vacation, and that he'll keep helping out the Astral Express as an excuse to leave the Luofu.
- Kafka
- Mommy Kafka ExplanationKafka is the first character you play as, and she ends her segment by awakening the Trailblazer, who's the primary Player Character for the rest of the game. Fans quickly joked that Kafka effectively gave birth to the character, making her a mother figure of sorts, which is further bolstered by her adopting a motherly demeanor whenever she interacts with the Trailblazer after their awakening. It's even invoked during her companion quest in a game of Truth or Lie where one of her possible lines is calling herself as Trailblazer's genetic mother who grew tired of raising him/her and sent Trailblazer away at some point.
- Kafka is Makima ExplanationSome fans compared Kafka to Makima of Chainsaw Man fame, with both women having somewhat similar designs, a penchant for suits, aspects of "domination" and considered The Dreaded in-universe (while also being a major figure of authority within their respective groups), and manipulation, despite the two having drastically different feelings and attitude towards the protagonist of their respective series. Kafka shows that she does genuinely care for the Trailblazer, while Makima is manipulative towards Denji and sees him as nothing more than a tool to her. Amusingly, Makima also has her own "BANG" moment, like Kafka's "BOOM" below..
- "BOOM!" ExplanationPerhaps one of the most iconic part of Kafka's character, where the finisher of her ultimate right after she stops firing bullets all around has her flick her right hand while making an ":o" face while saying "Boom" and causing all enemies to immediately take hefty damage afterwards. Some fans even drew parodies mimicking the pose.
- Luocha
- "What's in the coffin? Kallen" ExplanationThere's a coffin behind Luocha in his character splash art, so there's some speculation on what or who might be inside it. Because Luocha has several references to his counterpart Otto Apocalypse from Honkai Impact 3rd, some fans joked that Kallen Kaslana (Otto's childhood friend) or a Star Rail counterpart of hers is sleeping inside that coffin.
- Lynx
- Lynx holding up stuff ExplanationLynx's Ultimate animation has her holding up a ginormous pill to heal the party. The way she holds it quickly led to memes replacing her giant pill with other things, such as a Spirit Bomb, your hopes and dreams, and an L, to name a few.
- March 7th
- Elysia's daughter ExplanationAs soon as March 7th's design got revealed, fans of Honkai Impact 3rd joked that she's Elysia's daughter simply because of their similar pink hair, using a bow and arrow as their weapon of choice, and being An Ice Person. Though it also doubles as a Fan Nickname, there are memes about Elysia keeping it a secret from her fellow Flame-Chasers.
- Kiana's daughter ExplanationA variant of the above meme, though this time it involves Kiana Kaslana, due to March's quirky attitude and several references to the former, it has spawned memes about March being Kiana's daughter.
- Elysia and Kevin's lovechild ExplanationCoincide with the aforementioned "Elysia's daughter" meme, fans joked that Kevin Kaslana is March 7th's father, especially considering March is of the Ice element, and was found frozen in a block of ice, while Kevin being a MANTIS, has the DNA of an Honkai Beast that can control ice.
- Primogem personified ExplanationMany Genshin players who caught sight of March 7th's design were quick to notice and quip about her similar color scheme to Primogems, and Intertwined Fates to an extent.
- Cucked by March 7th ExplanationThe beginning of the game has Dan Heng attempt CPR on the Trailblazer by way of a Kiss of Life, before being interrupted by March 7th. With Dan Heng being a very handsome man, players of both Stelle and Caelus alike cursed March 7th for denying them a kiss from the black-haired dreamboat.
- March 8th ExplanationWhen the party comes across a frozen Antimatter Legion, the Trailblazer give us one of the funniest dialogues in the whole game: "I hereby name him: March 8th." This has lead to fans joked that March is part of the Antimatter Legion and they are her siblings.
- March’s turn to get stabbed Explanation (Spoilers)Because the Trailblazer and Dan Heng were both stabbed to get a power boost, with the Trailblazer gaining the Path of Preservation while Dan Heng awakens the Imbibitor Lunae and the Path of Destruction, many fans have joked that March 7th will be stabbed next to get a power boost and new Path.
- Evil March 7th Explanation (Spoilers)In Argenti's companion mission Night of Universal Hallucinations, March comes across a Juvenile Sting that poses as her "true self" who claims to be the perfect March 7th who possesses all of her forgotten memories. Since her voice actors have used a much lower voice and a more menacing tone in voicing the fake March, it's easy to see how some players have become rather down bad for this version of her.
- March's Fan-Fic ExplanationLuocha's Companion Mission sees March made an interpretation of what Luocha is doing during his time at the Luofu, players compared this to a fan fiction, with jokes around March is writing Fan-Fics of Luocha and sometimes adding Welt into it.
- Aaaand now I'm Luocha~ ExplanationDuring the aforementioned Companion Mission, the party reinterpret Luocha's action where March impersonating as the former, due to how silly it was for March to say something in Luocha's voice and the fact that the game hasn't revealed who she really is yet, fans jokes about March 7th was Luocha all along.
- March's new skin. When? ExplanationMarch wears a completely different outfit during the Trailblaze Continuances Mission "Jolted Awake From a Winter Dream". As a result, fans have been requesting for March's outfit to be obtainable.
- Jealous March 7th ExplanationDue to the heavy Ship Tease between the Trailblazer and Firefly in the Penacony storyline, fans joked that March would likely be less than happy with the idea of the two being a couple, leading to some Love Triangle antics. The fact that Firefly is a Stellaron Hunter and how much March dislike them makes it even funnier considering the latter's Black-and-White Morality and the former being a No-Nonsense Nemesis.
- Misha
- Genderbent Furina/Furina at homeExplanationComparisons between Misha and Furina immediately popped up after his drip marketing because of their similar color palettes, body shape, and fashion designs.
- Natasha
- "Nice to meet you! I'm Natasha, an underworld doctor. Feeling sick? ExplanationAfter the game's launch, this 7-second ad for the game started showing up in spades on YouTube, causing no shortage of irritation from those who kept seeing it.
- Pela
- Pela's age ExplanationAfter the reveal that Pela is 16 which makes no sense and completely breaks Belobog's timeline, players have come up with various absurd joke theories. Including: Lynx being high and getting Pela's age wrong, Pela being a Vidhyadhara, having reverse aging, or being a puppet like Herta's. One theory that some players agree with is that Jarilo-VI measures years differently compared to the rest of the cosmos, so Pela might be 16 in Jarilo-VI's time, but not in cosmic years.
- Just Pela. ExplanationPela currently has the distinction of being the 4-star character with the most rate-ups in featured banners, to the point where she featured in Acheron's banner in Patch 2.1 and also Boothill's banner in Patch 2.2. Unsurprisingly, players are a little tired of seeing her instead of rarer 4-stars like Yukong.
- Qingque
- Playing as Qingque is basically playing a gacha within a gacha. ExplanationHer Erudition playstyle is partly a game of chance- picking random tiles that can either result in either good damage or minimum at worst. She's also quite Skill Point-hungry from time-to-time and can have you run out of turns before settling with the latter. It's a joke among players that Qingque mains are gambling addicts, as they're already playing a gacha game.
- ONE QINGQUILLION DAMAGE ExplanationDerivative of the "ONE MORBILLION DOLLARS" meme from Morbius (2022). Qingque is capable of dishing out some very impressive damage... if you get lucky with her skill. The playerbase ran with the joke of elevating Qingque to godhood, whose DPS sweeps all others, dealing 1 Qingquillion damage! Certain events where you can get additional or even unlimited skill points skyrockets the number even more.
- Domain Expansion: Restless Gambler ExplanationA reaction image based off Jujutsu Kaisen posted every time Qingque performs well during MoC / Simulated Universe
- Robin
- I LIVED BITCH! Explanation (spoilers!)Star Rail released a drip marketing for Robin for version 2.2. But given her fate at the end of 2.0 storyline, players joked at how she is somehow survived her death, prompted this line.
- What if that's Sparkle? Explanation (spoilers!) As the end of the plot of part 1 of Penacony's story shows that Sparkle disguises herself as Robin (who is dead at that point) to make fun of Sunday, fans joke that the playable Robin might've been Sparkle disguised as her. It helps that both of them are Harmony characters.
- Chicken breasts ExplanationDue to how Robin is fairly well-endowed and how Sparkle called Sunday "Chicken-Wing Boy", this joke eventually came up about Robin.
- Ruan Mei
- Ruin Me ExplanationA common play on words with her name, expressed by the many players who find Ruan Mei very attractive.
- I can fix her! ExplanationRuan Mei's highly questionable ethics and Lack of Empathy have caused some players to view her as a potential villain, while players who support her claim she's simply misguided and that they, as Trailblazers, can "correct" her.
- Sampo
- "Let me give you a taste of the adult world!" ExplanationSampo (actually Sparkle in disguise) says those line when he guides the Trailblazer and Firefly throughout Golden Hour. This sparked a plethora of adult jokes centered around Sampo and young people.
- Seele
- "I AM THE STORM THAT IS APPROACHING"ExplanationVergil's memes from Devil May Cry 5 have been imported here as well, primarily because the multiple slashes and "glass-shattering" visual effects of Seele's Ultimate make it resemble Vergil's Judgment Cut End in DMC5. Lyrics of "Bury the Light" have been used in HSR Seele posts, and there's even a fan vid that combines footage from both games.
- "Disappear among the sea of butterflies, illusions of the past!" / "Starry Phantom!" ExplanationSeele's Ultimate line in the English dub. Spammed often whenever Seele comes up because of her Game-Breaker status meaning she gets used very often and her Extra Turn gimmick and high speed meaning you tend to see her Ultimate relatively frequently. Similarly, "Starry Phantom" is her ultimate line in the Japanese dub, which sticks out for its Gratuitous English.
- Turn based game? BASED ON MEExplanationAnother joke about Seele endlessly chaining turns.
- Seele's Crit Rate/Nah I'd CritExplanationSince Seele's ultimate consists of only one hit, while not common it is a considerable loss in damage when she misses the crit on her ultimate, devolving into jokes of Seele missing her ultimate all the time.
- The coughExplanationSeele's English voice actress, Molly Zhang, hosted a livestream watch party of the English voice cast's cover of "Interstellar Journey." But during the premiere of the cover, Molly accidentally muted the video audio right around the end of the first chorus when she meant to mute her microphone...leading to everyone on stream hearing her cough instead of the music. It's become a Never Live It Down moment for Molly since then, and expect jokes every so often of said moment.
- CONGRATS. HAPPY FOR YOU. NICE. ExplanationA post from Twitter / X has a three-panel images of Seele with these captions as if she's expressing with thinly-veiled jealousy. Players often use this meme whenever someone shows off how lucky they were in attaining their desired character and/or build for said character to express frustration.
- Serval
- "Seriously, I'm not invited?!" ExplanationWhen the animated commercial "Before the Show Starts" was aired, viewers immediately pointed out how Serval, who is a rock guitarist, wasn't among those set to play in the band alongside Robin. Many also joked how it was due to her not being a 5-star.
- Silver Wolf
- Any form of gamer or hacker memes can be applicable and is referred to when joking about Silver Wolf, as she's both of those descriptors.
- Wrong weakness, dammit! / Silver Wolf griefing ExplanationSilver Wolf is a very powerful character who can famously implant elemental weakness onto an enemy, but she's also infamous for often implanting the wrong elemental weakness to the frustration of players who need a specific weakness for their main DPS unit. Given how playful and trollish the hacker can be, it's easy to joke at how she's intentionally griefing her team.
- "Don't ask. Don't hesitate. Just pull. If ur asking, u want it. Pull first, ask questions later" ExplanationOne of Silver Wolf's text messages, when the Trailblazer expresses doubt about pulling for a character in a gacha game they both play. Expect it to be copypasted onto any post asking whether to pull for a specific character or not.
- "The Cooler Bronya" ExplanationSilver Wolf is often compared to Bronya due to both of them being alternate counterparts of Bronya Zaychik, so fans sometimes depict Silver Wolf as the cooler version of the two.
- Sparkle
- Twilight Sparkle ExplanationAs soon as she was drip marketed, players poked fun at Sparkle's name in English, finding it silly and comparing her to Twilight Sparkle. In particular, her name in the Japanese version is Hanabi, which many find to sound much more natural.
- "Why so serious?" ExplanationSparkle uses The Joker's famous line from The Dark Knight several times during her scenes.
- I can't fix her ExplanationA follow-up to Ruan Mei's "I can fix her" meme; while some players found Ruan Mei's Mad Scientist leanings still redeemable, most concede that Sparkle's Psychopathic Womanchild personality is too far for them to correct.
- Hu Tao, is that you?/Who Tao? ExplanationWith the amount of comparisons between Sparkle and Genshin Impact's Hu Tao due to their similarities, right down to their designs. There are several fanarts of these two together, even swapped outfits with each other.
- Sushang
- Sushang's Giant Cock/Sword ExplanationSushang's ultimate summoning a comically huge and cartoony chicken to pounce on her enemies has been memed to death. There is also the "Swordplay" lightcone depicting the greatsword wielder examining Luocha's rapier, and wondering why his "sword" is so small.
- Tingyun
- Tingyun's Taunt Value ExplanationAll units have an innate taunt value based on Path, with Preservation and Destruction having the highest. In addition, many skills and lightcones can further boost a unit's chance to be targeted. Tingyun is joked to have a ridiculously high innate taunt value surpassing even a tank unit with stacked effects that increase aggro whenever she, a squishy but indispensable attack buffer, is one-shotted by an enemy.
- "So that explains Tingyun's Taunt Value"Explanation (spoilers for the 1. 2 Trailblaze mission)When it was revealed that Tingyun was Lord Ravager Phantylia, an Emanator of Destruction (the Path with the second highest taunt value) in disguise, players joked about how Tingyun's high taunt value was foreshadowing.
- Tingyun's Snapped NeckExplanation (spoilers for the 1. 2 Trailblaze mission)When casting off her disguise as Tingyun, Phantylia snaps the body's neck, with the face still turned towards the camera bearing a Slasher Smile. The sheer shock of the scene caused many Crossing the Line Twice jokes from the fandom, in which official art of Tingyun is edited to have her neck snapped.
- Topaz and Numby
- I don't care who the IPC sends, I am NOT paying taxes! ExplanationA snowclone of the "who the IRS sends" meme, Topaz is a debt collector for the IPC and is also a very beautiful young woman. Many jokes were immediately made at how not even Topaz's sheer attractiveness would make players pay their taxes to the IPC.
- Belobog discovering what taxes are ExplanationIn Jolted Awake From a Winter Dream, Topaz is shown standing over Belobog. Players joke about how the planet just got saved from a Stellaron and they now have to face another catastrophe: bankruptcy from owing the IPC 700 years worth of taxes and debt. Io and behold, that is the precise plot of Future Market, the Traiblaze Continuance mission that stars Topaz.
- StonksExplanationNot only do they have an Ultimate animation of Numby climbing a rising stock market arrow, their sixth Ascension Trace is explicitly named "Stonks Market."
- Using Numby to lure Trotters so I can kill them ExplanationWhen Numby is on the field, it can attract fellow Trotters allowing you to attack them without startling them. Players took it as a rather cruel way to kill Trotters by using another Trotter as bait.
- Trailblazer
- "Rules are made to be broken!"ExplanationTrailblazer’s Ultimate line, which is jokingly used in fan works and parodies to explain their rather… odd behavior.
- Trailblazer X Trashcan OTP ExplanationThe game has a surprisingly large number of hilarious flavor text when interacting with the trashcans throughout town, leading many to joke that the Trailblazer has a thing for trashcans.
- "Trash-kun"ExplanationA commonly-used pun which combines "Trash Can" and the Japanese honorific "-kun".
- "Yes, my waifu is Trash"Explanation"Your waifu is trash" is a common insult, but because the Trailblazer is in love with trash cans, they see it as a compliment instead. This has not been lost in fanarts, as variants of such quotes are often used as captions or comments.
- Raccoon Trailblazer ExplanationThe Trailblazer has been compared with raccoons due to their fascination with trashcans and grey hair, and many fan art depict them with raccoon features.
- Attack on Trashcan ExplanationDuring the Penacony Trailblaze Mission, the Trailblazer transforms into a giant trashcan to fight the Garbage King (a giant Sampo). Many fans compared this scene with Attack on Titan. This goes double if you play as the female Trailblazer Stelle since she shares the same VA as Mikasa Ackerman.
- Caelus, the son of Aether and Lumine. ExplanationIn Roman mythology, Caelus is the son of Aether and Dies. Dies is Aether's sister, and a goddess associated with the day and light, so some players connected her name with Lumine... and the rest is history.
- Caelus' Harem ExplanationThough to the lesser extent as the "Aether's Harem" meme, players sometimes ship Caelus with other female characters in the game, but adding trash cans into the mix and fans will have a recipe for a funny meme.
- Caelus had rent due 😭ExplanationOne of Ruan Mei's creations takes on the Trailblazer's voice, with ugly dramatic sobbing. While the moment is meant to be sad, the performance of Caelus's English VA made waves with his voice for the cake, which many fans considered to be absolutely adorable.
- Stelle having the weirdest nightmares, while Caelus is just vibin' ExplanationStelle has been featured in rather strange trailers for the Penacony like the Great Tatalov Trailer while her male counterpart Caelus was mainly feat. in the WHITE NIGHT Opening for Penacony, dancing with Aventurine
- Thumbs-up StelleExplanationA reaction image of Stelle giving an energetic thumbs-up with a deadpan expression (as seen here). Posting it usually starts a long chain of replies consisting of the same image.
- Caelus Itadori / You are my special Explanation (spoilers) Redraws of Caelus as various frames of Yuji Itadori became very popular after the release of Penacony. In part because both are voiced by Jun'ya Enoki and because the events in Penacony's chapter, namely the deaths of Firefly and Robin, are compared to the very grim Shibuya Incident (which aired before Penacony's release).
- Depressed Stelle ExplanationIn the Cosmodyssey event, going back at the board with no dice left, Stelle will just roll over with a despaired look on her face. This has become the reaction image to express their depression over losing 50/50 on a limited 5-star banner, or something really depressing in general.
- Welt
- "What is this, Mr. Yang?" ExplanationWelt Yang serves as the exposition guy who explains some concepts that you discover on your journey. The Trailblazer usually sends a photo and asks "What is this, Mr. Yang?". Fans took that line in a meta sense to ask Welt for context on any funny event in the history of the Honkai franchise. The most commonly-used screenshot comes from the Honkai Carnival 2022 fan content submission event, specifically the "My Idol Debut Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected" video wherein Welt Yang, Kevin Kaslana, and Otto Apocalypse tried to dress up as idol girls.
- Yanqing
- "Yanqing, not understanding how he's losing to me. Me, who's been eating his pieces when he's not looking." ExplanationA certain meme featuring a doge playing chess◊ has been brought up when Yanqing realises that Jing Yuan has been stealing pieces off the board at the end of their chess match in Jing Yuan's trailer.
- Yanqing is Jing Yuan's son. ExplanationAs what the entry on Jing Yuan's stated, Yanqing has been taken in under the general's wing ever since he can remember, as he admitted that his memories of his birth parents are vague at best, and the reason for being left by them is unknown. Yanqing even asks Jing Yuan for allowance to buy new swords. His rebellious streak and general passion to grow up to be like his mentor certainly elevates the familial aspect of their mentor-pupil relationship.
- Yanqing getting bullied by the Destruction Trio Explanation (spoilers)Within the span of two patches (1.1 to 1.2), Yanqing has attempted and failed to arrest Jingliu, Blade, and (after revealing his true identity) Dan Heng (with all three coincidentally being Destruction-aligned units), the former in Yanqing's Companion mission and the latter two during the Luofu Trailblaze missions. Fans didn't let Yanqing's overconfidence in thinking he can take on three formidable warriors in their own right slide by (both Jingliu and Jing Yuan even tried to dissuade Yanqing from pursuing Blade), and thus tend to depict the three bullying Yanqing as punishment.
- The Qiqi of Star Rail ExplanationYanqing has gained the unfortunate reputation of being the worst standard banner 5-star to lose the 50/50 to, due to the strictness of his kit causing him to enter Low-Tier Letdown status. Even Bailu, who players often compare to Qiqi for her design and gameplay role, is a significantly more worthwhile pull due to healing being much more valuable in this game. As a result, expect much anguish from players who lose the 50/50 to Yanqing.
- YanKING ExplanationYanqing is reputed as a character who is often outperformed by other damage dealers; players who managed to overcome this and make him a competently powerful fighter on par or surpassing other powerful DPS units would dub him as Yanking (notwithstanding that the "qing" in Yanqing supposed to be pronounced "ching" and not "king"), much like his master Jing Yuan being dubbed "King Yuan".
- Yukong
- Where is Yukong? Why is she missing? ExplanationAs of Patch 2.2, Yukong is currently the only 4-star character who has not had a rate up ever since she reappeared in Imbibitor Lunae's banner back in Patch 1.3. This has led to many players lamenting where she could have possibly gone.
NPCs
- Aha
- "The Aeon will never give you up, never let you down, or abandon you. They will never make you cry, or say goodbye, or tell a lie and hurt you." ExplanationThis rickroll is a quote from the data bank entry about the Masked Fools, complete with an Expy named Ast Rickley. Fans have quoted this from time to time to fellow players by seemingly revealing spoilers to ending it with this in-universe rickroll.
- Caterina
- Caterina du Couteau ExplanationImmediately upon being revealed, players started comparing Caterina to the similarly-named Katarina from League of Legends due to their red hair, similarly Stripperiffic attire, curvy figures, and both being Hellbent For Leather.
- Red Hood, is that you? Explanation (spoilers for Goddess of Victory: NIKKE)Similar to how Caterina looks like Katarina, some also joked that Caterina looks a lot like Red Hood from Goddess of Victory: NIKKE. This meme is further spurred on by the events of Chapter 26 in NIKKE, where Red Hood essentially ends her own life for Rapi's sake, leading some to joke that she was isekai'd to Star Rail's universe.
- Constance
- Lady Constance Dimitrescu ExplanationConstance's beautiful and alluring looks and her outfit of a white hat and dress quickly drew comparisons to Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village, with immense thirsting included.
- Duke Inferno
- Aurelion Sol? ExplanationWhen Duke Inferno made his debut, players immediately thought his English voice actor sounded a lot like Aurelion Sol from League of Legends. It became even more meme-worthy when it was discovered that they share the same English voice actor.
- Didn't even get to show up in the game Explanation (spoilers!)During the first act of the Penacony story, Black Swan and Aventurine both claim that Duke Inferno has been Killed Offscreen by Acheron before he could arrive at the hotel. Given that Hoyo had released an entire trailer focused on him and his subordinates beforehand - leading to many people hoping he would become playable, and even an entire subreddit being created for his fandom - the reveal that he's already dead (at least, supposedly so) has been met with no small amount of jokes and memes.
- Jokes comparing him to La Signora from Genshin Impact also cropped up, due to both being fire themed villains with a big fanbase who received large amounts of hype but were unceremoniously killed off by a Raiden Mei look-alikes before they could get much in the way of characterization, prompting said fanbase to go on a copium overdose, with him arguably having it worse, given Signora got some onscreen appearances and a bossfight.
- Annihilated Gang Explanation (spoilers!)A play on the Annihilation Gang faction as a whole, though primarily directed at Ifrit and his "children"; despite his buildup and hype, he was Killed Offscreen by Acheron while his "children" went separate ways. Relatedly, fans also joke about how 1) the gang as a whole, despite their threat to the general masses, tend to be jobbers/jerked around by another faction, 2) they're basically posers who wished for Nanook to notice them, not knowing that They didn't care about them in the slightest
- Got turned into relics Explanation (spoilers!)The "Ashblazing Grand Duke" relic set was released in version 1.5, and its lore being about Duke Inferno. The relic pieces depict parts of the Duke's outfit. Players joke that the release of the relic set was foreshadowing, and how all that is left of Duke Inferno are relic pieces that players casually farm to put on their units.
- IX
- Bocchi the Aeon ExplanationIX is portrayed as a giant purple blob with perpetual sad eyes, making it look quite adorable in spite of being the encompassing embodiment of Nihility itself. Comparisons were quickly drawn to Hitori Goto from Bocchi the Rock!, who also happens to have a comical pink blob form.
- 5☆ Nihility Mommies ExplanationFans have noticed that most of the limited 5-star Nihility units so far are tall, beautiful, and curvaceous women (Kafka, Black Swan, Acheron), leading to jokes that IX has a type when it comes to their limited 5-stars.
- Mythus
- Misinformation spread successfully! ExplanationMythus is the Aeon of Enigmata, a path whose followers serve to obscure and falsify information and history for their own purposes, literally making it the path of misinformation. As a result, anytime someone makes some blatantly false claims or leaks about the game, fans will jokingly accuse them of being a follower of the Enigmata.
- Pom-Pom
- Paimon's rival ExplanationPlayers sees Pom-Pom as a more likable mascot than Paimon, while the latter being treated as the Memetic Loser by many fans, as a result jokes around Paimon being overthrown by Pom-Pom are bound to pop up.
- Pom-Pom the gang bossExplanationDuring Luocha's Companion Mission, Pom-Pom plays the role of the boss who makes a deal with Luocha over the Stellaron, players can't help but giggled at the idea of someone as adorable as Pom-Pom as an evil drug lord, lead to some of the most hilarious moments in the game.
- Siobhan
- Making lesbian drinks ExplanationLesbian fans have expressed their attraction towards the drinksmith Siobhan for her handsome appearance akin to that of a Butch Lesbian. It helps that she's also got an unique, strong yet motherly personality, particularly for the Dreamjolt Troupe under her care. So when she asks you (the Trailblazer) to make her a drink that "suits her", players would often try to make a layered drink themed after the lesbian flag. This is made even funnier by how the drink comes out as "Very sweet" and "Very thick", which pretty much writes itself.
- "Something Unto Death"
- Getting revenge on "Death" Explanation (spoilers!)After Firefly's tragic demise at the hands of "Something Unto Death", players swore that the monster would pay for what it did, and eagerly await the day that "Death" will show up as an Echo of War or Simulated Universe boss so that they can relish beating up and killing the monster over and over again. It reached the point where, when Hoyoverse posted the Powerful Enemy Dossier of "Something Unto Death" on Facebook, Twitter, and Hoyolab, the comments sections are filled with people out for its blood. As of Memory of Chaos' rotation in 2.0, it has been added as the Floor 12 boss, and starting from 2.1, it is added as the final boss in Simulated Universe World 9; fans wasted no time trying to beat it over and over. Though it became a Discredited Meme once Firefly was revealed to be actually alive.
- Because "Something Unto Death" is part of the Memory Zone Meme faction, it wouldn't take long for fans to turn it into... well, a meme itself, especially after killing off Firefly and Robin. It doesn't help that its mechanic has it half-killing your characters.
- "Oh, you drew Firefly... You know what I did..." Explanation (spoilers!)Whenever fanarts of Firefly posted online, fans sometimes reply with a picture of "Something Unto Death" with this caption on, this has briefly become a meme in and of itself.
- Sunday
- Because of his name, expect jokes relating to the days of the week whenever Sunday is mentioned or brought up. Even an official Hoyolab post joined in on it by making Sunday's social media profile picture a calendar.
- The most handsome man in Penacony ExplanationWhen Sunday appears in-game for the first time, Aventurine introduces him by calling him "the most handsome man in Penacony". It became habitual for Sunday fans to refer to him with these exact word.
- But is he playable, though? ExplanationEver since the reveal of his existence, players have been clamoring for Sunday to become a playable character. The leaks community in particular took to asking the question whenever any Penacony leak happened, no matter the topic - initially seriously, then mostly as a Running Gag. At this point, it's basically impossible to mention Sunday without someone asking if he's gonna be playable, or expressing their hope for the same.
- :3 / Sunday's uwu face ExplanationPlayers noticed that, in one scene of the 2.1 Trailblaze Mission, Sunday had an uwu face. The sheer hilarity of the serious and controlling Sunday making such a facial expression made said screenshot blow up as a reaction image, and the :3 emoticon has since been associated with Sunday.
- Baby Sunday ExplanationA cursed doodle of what Sunday would've hypothetically looked like as a newborn recently made rounds on Twitter, serving as a Call-Back to Sparkle calling him "Chicken Wing Boy". Hilariously, the original creator also drew an equally-cursed rendition of Robin, leading to an influx of fanart poking fun at one of the siblings (or both of them).
- "Things I like about Sunday. #1 His sister." ExplanationSunday isn't exactly the most likeable character, so many say the only reason they remotely like him is because he's Robin's brother and he cares for her.
Others
- "We've made a choice. Go fight against your fate!" Explanation (Spoilers!)The first line from the chorus of "Wildfire" made a huge impression on the fans as it's played just before Cocolia drops a meteor on your entire party, followed by the entire vocals continuing to play for the rest of the fight. It especially left a bigger impression on the newcomer Honkai fans who did not expect the game to have an English rock song right at its launch. "Wildfire" is then remembered as one of the amazing video game songs released past 2020, thus Internet meme culture uses this line to spread it. Variants include mentioning the line in forums to start a comment chain, letting the chorus interrupt a different song from another video game soundtrack, or animating the characters to dance wildly to the song.
- With Star Rail having its own counterparts for some familiar characters in the older Honkai games, there's been a trend of playing Honkai Impact 3rd songs over some scenes in Star Rail. So far, HSR's Himeko has the most clips out of this trend with "Nightglow" playing in the background.
- "The Star is Railing", "It's Railing Time" ExplanationJoke sentences, puns, and wordplays based around the game's title.
- The Foxian Beauty Taunt Value ExplanationWith the release of Yukong, another fellow Foxian Harmony pathstrider like Tingyun, jokes were immediately made at how Yukong also has a very high taunt value, creating the joke that simply being a Foxian Beauty is enough to greatly attract enemy attention.
- The entire Aetherium Wars event is such an utter parody of Pokémon that memes about it were inevitable, such as:
- Aetherium Masters EX Explanation (Spoilers!)The showdown with Hook at the finale has the Trailblazer and March rushing up Everwinter Hill in a scene that parodies the Pokemon Masters EX third anniversary cinematic.
- IPC's Team Rocket ExplanationThe Topaz Support Squad are a group of IPC grunts who are continuously trying to steal the Warp Trotter Aether Spirit from the Trailblazer and March. This is an obvious parody of Team Rocket's antics in trying to take Pikachu from Ash.
- r/okbuddytrailblazer is leaking/"Outbuddied" ExplanationThere exists a subreddit called r/okbuddytrailblazer which is known for its chaotic, unhinged and frequently horny posts. Jokes from r/okbuddytrailblazer appearing in the main subreddit prompt users to post several gifs in response. Alternatively, whenever there is Meme Acknowledgement or unhinged in-game content, players will say that they have been "outbuddied" by the devs.
- USG Herta Space Station ExplanationThe Seclusion Zone of Herta's Space Station has several scary moments, such as one of Ruan Mei's creations "singing" the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star song in a creepy manner. This resulted in a lot of players thinking that Hoyoverse took notes from the Dead Space franchise when designing the area and it's story.
- "You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me." ExplanationWith the release of Pure Fiction, Erudition units which used to be considered subpar damage dealers were able to shine in the new gamemode. Thus, the Thanos quote will be attributed to Rescued from the Scrappy Heap characters like Himeko and Herta.
- PEAK Fiction ExplanationAn exclamation praising the release of the Pure Fiction gamemode for being "peak" - in other words, fun and allowing different strategies and teamcomps from the usual Memory of Chaos, as well as leading to previously underwhelming characters to rise to meta status.
- Where is Kiana?! ExplanationKiana Kaslana, one of MiHoYo's most iconic characters, has appeared in many titles such as Honkai Impact 3rd and Gun Girl Z in some form or another, which makes her complete absence from Honkai: Star Rail all the more standout. Fans demanded that she should be in Star Rail as herself from HI3 or at least a variant of her, especially since Welt Yang, an HI3 veteran, as well as the Star Rail counterparts of several other HI3 characters were already in the game.
- Kianaless Mei ExplanationAcheron is sometimes called this, due to how there's seemingly no "Kiana" figure in her life, which fans theorize to be partly the reason she turned out the way she does. Even when you take into account that Kevin is also a "Kiana" and he also existed in her world, she implies that she killed him.
- Imaginary Men ExplanationWith the sole exception of Yukong, all Imaginary characters in the game are men, and some of the most popular men in the game at that, which soon gave rise to people joking about how the best men one could dream of aren't real.
- Quantum Girls, Imaginary Men ExplanationSimilar to how Imaginary is almost entirely dominated by male characters, Quantum is exclusively female, leading to comparisons between the two and jokes about how Hoyoverse is going to keep both elements gender-locked.
- ...and Yukong ExplanationWith Yukong being the only female Imaginary unit so far, people got into a habit of pointing out that she is Imaginary, or otherwise ask how exactly she fits into the picture, whenever someone talks about Imaginary men.
- Harmony Women ExplanationRelatedly, with the release of Sparkle, Harmony has characters of all elements... and all of them are female. Aside from joking about how "females are supporters", fans also joke that this is why Yukong can be Imaginary (who are mostly men) and still be a woman.
- Male boob windows ExplanationClose to Penacony release, people began to notice that a fair amount of male characters (Imbibitor Lunae, Sampo, Dr Ratio, Blade, Aventurine, Gallagher, to name just a few) have small cutouts in their outfit revealing their chests. Jokes soon followed, ranging from speculating about character designers' Cleavage Window fetish to half-sarcastically praising the equal-opportunity sexy clothing, comparing it to the barely-there shorts and skirts, and detached sleeves that many female characters sport.
- "Penacony's story will be chill, carefree, and upbeat."ExplanationAn offshoot of the infamous "it's a positive and wholesome story" quote said by Shaoji, one of the writers of the Honkai series. He gained notoriety among the fans for stating that the storyline of Honkai Impact 3rd storyline is upbeat despite blatant evidences of the otherwise. With the announcement of him the writer of the Penacony storyline, fans began to speculate about how bleak it will be in addition to sarcastically quoting this line, and said fears were justified with the shocking deaths of Firefly and Robin in just the first chapter of the Penacony quest.
- "Why do I not believe you" ExplanationA screenshot of Da Wei from the 2.0 Livestream, said in response to Shaoji's above line. It has been frequently used as an image macro by users expressing any kind of doubt.
- Hollup, let him synthesize ExplanationStar Rail's version of the "let him cook" meme, which is a photo of Caelus facing the Omni-Synthesizer. That said, it's usually followed by...
- Mr. Yang, he's not synthesizing shit ExplanationA macro of Welt and Stelle frowning at Caelus, with the chances of this appearing higher if others consider the topic a bad take.
- Genshin could never ExplanationWith the amount of QoL features and endgame contents Honkai Star Rail has that Genshin Impact players have been demanded for so long, a massive Fandom Rivalry erupted between Star Rail and Genshin, even though they were made by the same company (indeed, to an extent, Star Rail exists to funnel dissatisfied Genshin players into a miHoYo game rather than a game made by a different company). Thus this common refrain arose among people wanting to lord their current, "superior" game over the game they used to play. Though it quickly became a Discredited Meme as many fellow Star Rail players, especially those who play Genshin alongside Star Rail (of which there are many) have grown sick of the joke.
- Penacony is SUS! Explanation (Penacony spoilers!)Due to Aventurine being a gambler with an hidden agenda and Black Swan has seemingly conspire with him, Sparkle can turn into basically anyone else, the Family seems to be hiding something from others, both Acheron and Firefly haven't revealed their true identities until Version 2.1, and Gallagher was behind all of the murders so far, many players became very suspicious about the exact nature of this "so-called" lively dreamscape. As a result, many jokes about Penacony is a sussy place ensues, especially when considering the "carefree and upbeat" tone of the story arc.
- The Penacony Incident Arc Explanation (spoiler!)A popular permutation from the Shibuya Incident arc of Jujutsu Kaisen due to the shared voiced actors and the Signature Scene of Firefly's death in 2.0, with many people joking that even in another universe Yuji Itadori just can't catch a break.
- hmmmmm setllar jdarr ExplanationStar Rail's edit of SCP-096 collecting stellar jades on the ground, which is mostly spammed as a reaction if the playerbase expects the developers to give out stellar jades whenever the game wins an award or bug fixes are made.
- Collecting Stellar Jades? You Monster! ExplanationWarp Trotters dropped Stellar Jades when defeating them, however since Trotters are Ridiculously Cute Critter, many joked about killing those poor creatures for a measly 50 Jades is an act of horrible animal slaughter.
- Hoyoverse CEO Da Wei confirmsExplanationA joke on Twitter among players of Hoyoverse's top three most popular games (Honkai Impact 3rd, Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail) to spread "news" of Da Wei confirming something such as headcanons about their favourite characters.
