Main Characters

    As a Group
As a group, the team falls under these tropes:

  • Named Weapons: The Blood Sins are named after the crimes of their user.
    • Kanata's sword is called Patricidal Edge due to his crime of murdering his father.
    • Vicious' dual pistols are called Endless Torment for reasons implied to be because of his status as the Great Transgressors.
    • Misella's flower is called Annihilation Flame due to her crime of burning down the orphanage.
    • Aegis' spear is called Wavering Heart due to being falsely accused of seducing Queen Rebecca and murdering her.
    • Yuna's knives are called Embroiling Deceit.
    • Orwin's knuckles are called House Asunder due to performing a Mercy Kill on his wife that ruins his family life.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Similar to Berseria's player party, the group in Crestoria is primarily composed of outcasts, exiles and other misunderstood folk. Although here, most of them are paired together due to some sort of Miscarriage of Justice directed at them.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The location of each character's Stains of Guilt on their bodies reflect their crimes for which they have been branded: Kanata's is on his right hand, which held the dagger that killed his father; Misella's is on her left hand, which held a brightblaze flower that set the orphanage on fire in her efforts to help cover Kanata's tracks; Vicious's is on his navel, symbolizing the peril his very existence is supposed to bring; Aegis's is on his heart, symbolizing his (alleged) sin of seducing and killing Queen Rebecca; Yuna's is on her tongue, given her penchant for deceit; and Orwin's is on is eye due to having turned a blind eye to the truth regarding his wife.
  • True Companions: Lampshaded by Aegis when he joins the "transgressor nakama".
  • Two Girls to a Team: Misella and Yuna Azetta.

    Kanata Hjuger

Kanata Hjuger

Son of a monk who serves both as a leader of the village of Dalchia and manager of its local orphanage. Fiercely protective of the weak, and often too blunt for his own good, his fascination with the workings of the Vision Orbs takes a dark turn when he gets branded with a Stain of Guilt after he kills his father Cody in a fit of rage after discovering his involvement in human trafficking, especially when his childhood friend Misella is about to be sold away.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Played straight and subverted.
    • Yuna calls Kanata "Kanana" in a friendly manner.
    • Makina calls Kanata "Kanny-kan" or Oni-chan in the Japanese version as either an insult, name calling or not caring about remembering his actual name.
  • All-Loving Hero: Downplayed. Kanata is generally a Nice Guy, but there are some things even he won't tolerate. He kills his own father to get his Stain of Guilt, and is shown to be willing to go along with terrible acts if it's for the greater good.
  • BFS: Kanata wields one as his blood sin, Patricidal Edge. The blade is longer than he is tall, and Kanata has to use all of his body weight to swing it in a few of his attacks.
  • Broken Pedestal: His love and faith in his father Cody completely shattered after Kanata found out that Cody was a cruel man who engaged in child trafficking.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Kanata always strives to be a Nice Guy and help out ordinary people, even after becoming a transgressor. This shows up by Kanata stopping his progress to help out anyone he sees that's being attacked by monsters, often getting involved in someone else's business in the process. However, this attitude gets deconstructed, as not only does he get on Velvet's bad side almost immediately, but both Vicious and Aegis point out that Kanata's very selfless attitude is quite unhelpful when the world wants their heads on a platter. Misella is also fiercely defensive of her view of Kanata as a Knight in Shining Armor, and will threaten anyone who she thinks is trying to distort that view of him.
  • Covert Pervert: If his reaction to potentially seeing Misella naked and meeting beach girls is any indication.
  • Death Seeker: When Esvanilla uses the truesight stone on Kanata's inner thoughts, it's revealed that Kanata secretly wants to die because he can't stand being hated by everyone, and finds living too awful and painful to bear. He says no matter what he does, he can't make his crimes go away and be forgiven, fueling his desire to vanish.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Kanata is essentially the nicest character in the main party, but he's not above killing or exterminating those who he deems truly evil.
  • Heroic BSoD: After he killed his father and branded as Transgressor, he almost gave up living until Vicious saves him from being kill by the Enforcers.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Kanata is often insults people without ill-intent.
  • Internal Reveal: In Chapter 6 Part 1 finale, Kanata learns he is Sonia's older brother when Sonia prays to the vision central, for the enforcers to punish Kanata for killing her father Cody Hjuger.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Shows shades of this as his character episodes reveal his interest in fashion and his need to keep his appearance immaculate, at one point refusing to leave his room because his bangs aren't properly set. He also acts as The Heart in the party and takes it upon himself to cook for everyone.
  • Jack of All Stats:
    • Kanata's stats are all roughly in the average range for his SR version. He has decent HP, middle-of-the-road Attack, and slightly below-average Defense. This allows him to be used fairly well on teams because he can be sturdy enough to take a hit, and strong enough to dish some out, but he also will be outdone by other characters. SSR Kanata follows the same model; his Mystic Arte also does mid-range damage and adds a mid-range amount of hits to the combo chain, as opposed to a lot of hits (like Vicious, Luke, or Dhaos) or only one hit (like Rita or Estelle). So while Kanata is an all-around solid choice, he isn't the best at anything.
    • This also applies to Kanata's Memoria Stones, much like the man himself. The bonuses from Kanata's stones provide flat increases to damage, which isn't flashy but is also a solid choice for almost anyone. They also give mid-range increases to HP, attack, and defense for their stats.
  • Knight Errant: Downplayed as he's not a knight or ever was one, but he displays characteristics of one.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Chapter 8 has him gain an upgraded version of his Blood Sin near the end after he resolves to live with his sin, and with Vicious and Misella, it allows him to beat Esvanilla for good.
  • Missing Mom: Kanata's mother was never mention or seen within the game, but it implies his mother died after he was born.
  • Morality Chain: Serves as this for Misella, his childhood friend. When Kanata was in danger, she threatened to kill herself rather than put him in any trouble. After Kanata kills his father Cody, Misella likewise burns down the orphanage once it's become clear that Kanata has become a transgressor.
  • The Paragon: Deconstructed. He constantly seeks to do the right thing, and Misella more or less expects him to be this all the time. But it crosses into Chronic Hero Syndrome after Kanata becomes a transgressor, as he seeks to help people who could report him, kill him, or both. Vicious in particular seeks to be The Corrupter to get Kanata to drop this attitude, but that's more out of a sense of Pragmatic Villainy.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: In chapter 6, Kanata experiences a dream of his father Cody, who angrily demands to know why his son killed him. Kanata feels terrible at first, but also answers back that Cody is the lowest of the low and a horrible person, and that he deserved what he got.
  • Patricide: It's killing his own father that sets the plot in motion. Given that Cody was a human trafficker, it was A Tragedy of Impulsiveness that led to Kanata becoming a transgressor after he let his emotions get the better of him.
  • Self-Made Orphan: His crime was killing his father, resulting in his Stain of Guilt forming in the palm of the hand that Kanata used to stab him.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Kanata's skillset is fairly straightforward, with his skills being a powerful single-target attack and an all-enemies attack that's roughly about as strong as his normal attack, but also has a high hit count to push his damage even higher with combo bonuses. Furthermore, his Awakening skill is a simple party-wide attack boost with no strings attached (instead of only affecting certain elements or weapon users, like many other Awakening skills tend to have). All of this gets the job done pretty effectively even in high-level teams, and makes his SR version one of the best characters to keep in your party at early levels.
  • Super Gullible: Almost always falls for Vicious and especially Yuna's lies.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Downplayed and played straight:
    • Kanata fights Makina, who looks like a child since she's pure evil and not human.
    • Kanata doesn't hurt or kill children. When Forte and Assid encourage Kanata to kill his sister Sonia, a child, in order to save Yednark, he refuses to kill her because not only is she his only remaining relative, but it feels wrong to end someone life without living it to the fullest.

    Misella

Misella

Element: Fire
Blood Sin: Annihilation Flame (Brightblaze Flower, Left Palm)
Character Design: Mutsumi Inomata
Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa

Click here to see her with her updated Blood Sin from Chapter 8 (spoilers)

Kanata's childhood friend and an orphan raised in the monastery ran by the former's father Cody. After Kanata kills his father before he can sell her off, she burns down the orphanage to help Kanata escape, but is also branded with the Stain of Guilt after discovering that in the process she accidentally killed another orphan. Escaping with Kanata and their rescuer Vicious, she nevertheless spends much of her journey in constant loggerheads with Vicious, accusing him of being a negative influence on Kanata.

  • Accidental Murder: When Misella sets fire to the shelter to save Kanata, Nash's little sister Nisha runs back in to retrieve a charm Nash made for her, and dies after getting caught inside. Nash blames Kanata for his sister's death.
  • A-Cup Angst:
    • Never try to comment about her flat chest. In the "Secret Weapons" skit, Aegis comments that Misella's "weapon" doesn't work. Enraged, she intends to kill him with her fire powers for being "an enemy to womankind."
    • If Misella and Velvet are in the active party, Misella may comment on the size of Velvet's chest, wishing she had "bazongas" like that. Velvet will quickly tell Misella to stop looking at her breasts and focus on fighting.
    • When Makina calls Misella "Not-Boingy Lady" due to her flat chest, she gets very offended. Enraged, she intends to teach Makina a lesson to "fear for her elders".
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's fourteen and the youngest member of the group.
  • Berserk Button: Doing anything that would ruin her image of Kanata is a big one for her. This is one of her biggest reasons for disliking Vicious, as he tempts and acts as a negative influence on Kanata. In chapter five she even comments that she should have killed Vicious earlier when Vicious suggests they steal a boat and Kanata agrees.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She is generally a nice person, but when it comes to Kanata, she quickly slips into this role. She'll act friendly and nice at first, but if she suspects someone of trying to ruin her Kanata, she becomes hostile and quick to anger.
  • Blood Knight: Make no mistake. She's as down to fight as the boys, if not more so. She frequently talks about killing people, especially Vicious when he tries to convince Kanata not to act like The Paragon.
  • Broken Tears: After burning down the orphanage in her effort to help clear Kanata's tracks.
  • Burn the Witch!: The villagers subject Misella to this in Chapter 1, Stage 15, after she has been condemned for burning down the shelter. Fortunately, Vicious intervenes in time, and Misella turns the flames into her blood sin.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Averted. She's not really hiding her affections for Kanata. It's just that she's more concerned with protecting her idea of Kanata than Kanata's actual character.
  • Combat Medic: She has a single target Healing Arte and a single target Spell Arte, on top of having her default melee attacks.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has pink hair and pink eyes to match.
  • Eye Scream: She hasn't lost her eyes yet. Sonia is still in denial about her father being a horrible person and refuses to believe Kanata is a good person. Misella suggests that if Sonia can't see what a good person Kanata is, she is willing to give her own eyes to Sonia so she can see for herself. Misella says if she is no longer able to see, Kanata will always be her light that will burn within her.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She has one sleeve longer than her left sleeves, and while her left arm has a glove.
  • Fiery Redhead: Still counts, as pink is a shade of red. Nonetheless, Misella uses an element as fiery as her temper.
  • Guilt Complex: Chapter 8 has a truesight stone reveal this about her. Basically, Misella thinks that if she suffers enough, then it will mean she's paid for her crime and Kanata will forgive her. Sonia immediately tears into Misella when this comes out, saying that Misella's suffering is not going to bring back anyone who died. Aegis adds that if Misella wants Kanata to be a paragon of virtue, then she needs to live in order to help that become a reality.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: After the first chapter, Misella's usual response to anything is to kill it. Even if it's a party member making an off-hand comment.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Downplayed example. She uses a flower as her weapon, which happens to be a brightblaze, known for its highly-combustible pollens. And since her weapon is living flame, it fits.
  • It's All My Fault: Chapter 8 reveals that she considers Kanata becoming a Transgressor all her fault, as it was her who had more or less called Kanata to the church and caused the events that led him in killing his father, and she burned down the church which caused Nash's sister's death, which is what led Nash to not come to Kanata's defense when he was on Vision Central for his crime of killing Cody. She does however move on from this at the same time this is revealed, as she resolves to live for Kanata and to see him become the ideal version she loves.
  • Loving a Shadow: How her affections for Kanata present themselves. She's very protective over her view of him, which is an "upright, pure and good person" and places him on a pedestal due to him serving as her Morality Chain. Kanata himself has much more depth than this, especially as the story progresses. The minute Kanata acts out of her vision of him as the purest good on the planet, Misella is quick to turn the blame on anyone else who could be "corrupting" Kanata, even if Kanata made the decision on his own.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Gains an upgraded version of her Blood Sin while fighting the monster implanted with Nash's Truesight Crystal, in which she comes to terms to her causing Kanata to become a Transgressor in the first place, and with it is able to put down the monster for good.
  • Playing with Fire: Misella's Blood Sin, Annihilation Flame, allows her to use fire magic. She also burns down the orphanage in her Doomed Hometown with brightblaze flowers.
  • Psycho Sidekick: Misella is one to Kanata. Her mission in life is to keep Kanata as her ideal version of him. To that end, she is willing to hurt and kill others, and she is constantly jealous and angry of how Vicious became Kanata's friend despite his loose morals. Misella often openly threatens to kill Vicious despite Kanata's protests.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She continues to wear a pretty white dress and carries herself elegantly, but she also has a fiery temper and eager to put up a fight when annoyed.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meat. She constantly talks about meat in almost reverent tones, one skit has her lovingly describe a steak, and she clearly hates the idea of just adding vegetables to a meat dish.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: How her eyes appear in her SSR version and is one of the best arte units in combat.
  • Secretly Selfish: As early as chapter one, it's clear that she is very protective of her idealized version of Kanata, to the point of not helping in battle simply because Kanata is her protector. This makes her very hostile towards anyone who tries to ruin her view of him.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Like Kanata, the SR version of Misella is a basic, but easy-to-use character. While offensively weak, having a Combat Medic who can also provide any party a flat 11% defense buff (when fully Awakened) makes her very good at ensuring a party lasts longer. Thanks to having a decent defense, she can survive a bit longer and heal others, especially with her healing spell being able to restore about half of someone's HP.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She only has eyes for Kanata. She isn't attracted to anyone else. It's played with though, because Misella clearly is in love with the idea of Kanata as The Paragon, which she's seen him as since they were children. When Kanata starts gaining more of an edge to him, Misella is clearly worried.
  • Yandere: For Kanata, or rather, for her ideal of him. Misella is quick to anger and violence towards anything she perceives as 'corrupting' Kanata. No one is safe from her wrath; not her own party members, and not even children.

    Vicious

Vicious

Element: Dark
Blood Sin: Endless Torment (Twin Handguns, Abdomen)
Character Design: Miyuki Kobayashi
Voiced by: Yūma Uchida

Click here to see him as the Great Transgressor (spoilers)

A man whose sin is merely being born, Vicious is an amoral wanderer simply known as the "Great Transgressor". Amidst his journey in search of a certain place, he stumbles upon Kanata and Misella, who were just branded with Stains of Guilt, and helps them fight back by turning their Stains of Guilt into weapons known as "Blood Sins".

  • Accidental Murder: In Chapter 8: 12-1, it is revealed that 20 years ago, Vicious accidentally massacred the entire village when he was a child with his black flames that incinerated everyone without a trace after he lost control of his Transgressor powers.
  • The Alcoholic: He loves drinking any kind of alcoholic drinks. He'll even start openly whining if he goes too long without booze, and frequently talks about all the alcohol he's going to steal upon getting to a new town for the first time.
  • Aloof Ally: He's ostensibly on the same side as Kanata and Misella, but he's also a total dick to them. He'll shoot at them, berate them, and say that they're not up to any task they try to undertake. However, it's less to do with hating them specifically and more to do with the fact that Kanata trying to be good in spite of everything irritates Vicious. However, Vicious starts to grow out of it when Kanata vows to destroy every vision orb, saying he wants along for the ride because it'd be fun to turn the world upside-down. He's still a jerk, just not quite as much of one to the party as the story goes on.
  • Anti-Hero: He is actively fighting against an unjust system by helping Kanata and Misella try and stop the vision orb system. But Vicious also shows there is no ethical and/or moral line he won't cross, from kidnapping to blackmail and even murder.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Though he'll never admit it, this is implied to be the reason he travels with Kanata and the rest; after a lifetime of people condemning him as the Great Transgressor, Kanata was the first person to accept him and even want to travel with him without ever judging him.
  • Berserk Button: Vicious gets offended when someone suggests to change his appearances. In one of Kanata's episodes, "Vagrant Clinic", Kanata unintentionally offended Vicious' lifestyle and suggests he should change the way he looks. He smacks Kanata and threatens to shoot him.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Vicious' sclerae turn completely black and his eyes turn yellow in his Great Transgressor form. It shows how dangerous and powerful he is when Vicious unleashes his true powers on his enemies.
  • Blood Knight: His maniacal expressions and unabashed declarations in combat speak of a guy who loves a good fight. Turned up to eleven when he enters his "Great Transgressor" form, where he'll even turn on Kanata and the gang for trying to get him to stop.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Are you gonna own your sin, or are you gonna let it own you?" Said to the transgressors before he helps them awaken to their blood sin.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Vicious has a high number of hits for all of his attacks, with four hits per move at a minimum, letting him rapidly build the combo meter for more damage. His Attack stat is a bit on the lower end, and each of those individual hits doesn't do much damage anyway. This means his strength comes from either building the combo meter for others, or taking advantage of it himself. His Mystic Arte, Persecution Complex, has one of the highest hit counts in the entire game, even compared to previous Tales characters like Luke, Dhaos, or Yuri.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's a proud villain, but he does find the citizens pathetic for relying on Enforcers to carry out their mob justice, since using a proxy means they can evade responsibility for condemning the accused to death. He'll often goad the party's accusers into carrying out retribution with their own hands and owning up to their malice.
  • Expy: To Dante. Dual wielding guns, wearing a longcoat with no shirt and surviving being stabbed through the heart. Complete with a cocky and trollish attitude, as well as not even hiding the fact that he's thought of as a bad guy. In fact, his Superpowered Evil Side resembles the Devil Trigger too.
  • Evil Is Hammy: A Villain Protagonist who tends to be chew up the scenery when it's time to dance to a tune he likes.
  • Freudian Excuse: It turns out his "crime" was simply to be born. As a result of this Vicious was never loved by anyone and hunted his whole life. This caused him to eventually fully embrace his status as the Great Transgressor and become the monster everyone expected him to be.
  • Fully-Embraced Fiend: He's a transgressor who is quite fine with it. Vicious makes no effort to be a good person, constantly acts like a jerk to everybody, and is willing to suggest amoral responses to minor problems (like theft or murder). According to Vicious, no one's going to listen to him anyway, so he might as well go the whole hog with being the bad guy. Plus... well, his name is Vicious. And he's known to the world as "The Great Transgressor" for a reason besides just his Stain of Guilt.
  • Guns Akimbo: He fights with two pistols, one in each hand, and his fighting style involves alternating shots at a single target while executing Gun Fu moves.
  • The Heavy: In-Universe example. As the "Great Transgressor", he's seen by the rest of the world as the ultimate threat that must be taken out if peace is to be maintained.
  • Hidden Depths: Vicious can be surprisingly insightful about the nature of sin, embracing one's desires in spite of public opinion, and acknowledging past mistakes. He's also rather respectful of people's desires, as long as they're passionate about whatever it is that they're doing and can plead a decent case about what they want. It just takes quite a bit to get this attitude out in the open.
  • Life Drain: Vicious has the power to drain the life force of every living being nearby with his black flames in his Great Transgressor form.
  • A Mistake Is Born: His crime, as symbolized by his Stain of Guilt being around his navel. It frames quite a bit of his outlook on life and the world, saying that his existence can't be a crime. And if everyone's going to treat him like a monster anyway, Vicious says that he may as well give the people what they want.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: His guns sprout axe blades underneath the barrels. Downplayed in that he doesn't actually hit anything with them. They appear to be there just to look cool.
  • Morality Chain: Kanata gradually becomes one for him due to Kanata showing him consistent kindness.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: He wears a black tatter coat jacket with no shirt.
  • The Pig-Pen: Downplayed. In Vicious Chapter "Bathing", Vicious doesn't look dirty, but he smells bad because he only bathes when it is raining. According to him, the last time he bathed was three days ago, and even Kanata comments that he has bad hygiene that repellent to women. As a result, Vicious gets tied up and washed hard by Misella and Yuna until he's all clean.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • When something terrible happens in front of him (at least, when it wasn't his fault), Vicious is quick to turn a situation to his advantage while everyone else is distracted. For example, when Queen Rebecca is killed by the king, Vicious uses the advantage to bolt away down a tunnel away from the Royal Guards.
    • He encourages Kanata to abandon his attitude as The Paragon. This is not so much because Vicious is trying to be The Corrupter (though Vicious does admit that he thinks it would be nice), but because Kanata's attitude of being nice to people who want them captured or killed is just going to cause a needless amount of trouble.
  • Prone to Vomiting: Vicious gets seasick after drinking too much alcohol before they set sail in the middle of the monster fight. While he does fight in a Hopeless Boss Fight at first, his attacks only do single-digit damage.
  • Red Baron: "The Great Transgressor." He's a well-known criminal worldwide, Shrouded in Myth to some degree, and becomes a terrifying presence once people realize who he is. Vicious has a list of crimes and transgressions a mile long, which he's grown into quite well, constantly acting the maggot.
  • Sinister Scythe: He wields a scythe as his main weapon in his Great Transgressor form.
  • Satanic Archetype: As the the "Great Transgressor", a person born a Transgressor, he is essentially the world's Satan opposed to Kasque.
  • Satan Is Good: In opposition to Kasque's God Is Evil. While he may not have started much better than her, Vicious is gradually softened by Kanata, leading to him becoming a much better person than Kasque.
  • Super-Empowering: He has a special ability to transform a transgressor's Stain of Guilt into Blood Sins, weapons with which he encourages them to lash back against the society that cast them out.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Revealed in chapter 7 to have a demonic form that grants him an incredible power increase (enough to singlehandedly beat down Kasque, not long after she had wiped the entire team with little effort), but at the cost of maximizing his Blood Knight tendencies, as well as producing black flames that drain the life force of every living being nearby. And neither of those downsides discriminate between friend and foe; he'll gladly attack his own allies if he thinks they'll provide an interesting fight. He does get control over it in Chapter 8, after confronting his past.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Because people have no interest in hearing a transgressor's side of the story, however justified they may be, Vicious has decided that he may as well throw any pretense of morality to the winds. His sin was being born, which just amplifies these feelings.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Vicious is the toxic friend to Kanata who frequently encourages him to consider theft and even murder if strictly necessary. Misella hates him for this, as it is slowly eroding her belief in Kanata as The Paragon.
  • Villain Protagonist: Vicious is not a pleasant person. He's a complete jerk even to people he's ostensibly helping, he's known as "the Great Transgressor", and he has a list of sins a mile long. He constantly suggests the most violent options first, and is willing to commit any number of crimes (up to and including murder) if he thinks it will make his life easier. In spite of this, Vicious can be surprisingly insightful when he wants to be, especially about the hypocrisy of the citizens who are so quick to label people as transgressors. However, due to Kanata's influence, Vicious began to soften, and he pledged Undying Loyalty to Kanata and even came back from near death to save him from Kasque.

    Aegis Alver

Aegis Alver

Element: Water
Blood Sin: Wavering Heart (Spear, Chest)
Character Design: Miyuki Kobayashi
Voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_aegis_01.jpg

The captain of the Knights of Medagal. His honesty, innocence, and sense of honor makes him a bit hard-headed. A fervent believer in the trustworthiness of Vision Orbs, he was first assigned to hunt after Kanata, Misella and Vicious, but soon finds himself roped into the group after getting into trouble over an unrequited love.

  • Ambiguously Gay: In Chapter 5, Kanata asks him if he's uninterested in women, and in the Japanese version, Vicious asks him directly if he likes men. He denies Misella's accusation that he has a "thing" for Kanata, but not the initial question. He also has other scenes where he's shown to be uninterested in women, such as denying Yuna's flirting in their after-battle dialogue and the character room skit with Misella where he admits he knows nothing about femininity.
  • Courtly Love: Subverted. One would think he's in love with Rebecca, but he's not. He had unintentionally led her on, believing that it was his duty as a knight to be there for her and she read that as him having feelings for her. She doesn't believe him when he states such. Despite that, he genuinely wished to help her and seemed to care about her.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: He doesn't like Yuna referring to him as "Aegrouch".
  • Fatal Flaw: His obstinacy. Aegis has a genuine sense of justice, but his unwillingness to look past the surface and refusal to address his own views and the current system led to him getting framed by the king and becoming a transgressor.
  • Hero Antagonist: He starts out this way. Aegis goes after the party because they're transgressors, and because it's his duty to do so. It takes a Trauma Conga Line before Aegis pulls a genuine Heel–Face Turn. First, Queen Rebecca is murdered in front of him, then he gets blamed for her death in a Frame-Up by his king. After retreating to the Nation of Sin, Aegis sees that not all transgressors are bad people, and the Enforcers show up to engage in a mass slaughter with their leader showing a distinct Lack of Empathy. After all that, Aegis finally awakens to his blood sin, saying that enough is enough.
  • Heroic BSoD: After being accused of killing Queen Rebecca, he becomes stuck in a rut as to what to do and finds himself with Vicious and his gang. For almost the entirety of chapter 3, he remains a mess, unsure what to do. It takes a while for him to accept he needs to move on and throw his lot in with the transgressors.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite acting like a by-the-book knight, it turns out that he's quite the fanboy of "Silver Mechaknight Avalanche." One of the skits covers how he bought a figurine, which was actually much more expensive than what the other three had purchased (accessories for Kanata, booze for Vicious and meat for Misella). Keep in mind, the skit begins with him chastising them for excessive spending.
  • Knight Errant: What he becomes once he's a transgressor. Though downplayed as he's technically no longer a knight, he still acts like such.
  • The Kingslayer: The sin he is accused of. In reality, he didn't do it and was trying to get her back, but the King killed her and framed him for it in order to get rid of both of them.
  • Married to the Job: Deconstructed. Aegis is very serious about his duty as a knight, however he's also very half-hearted in his beliefs and approach. He gets better following the massacre of the Nation of Sin.
  • My Name Is Inigo Montoya: He frequently says "You face Aegis Alver!" before engaging in battle, whether he's fighting with the heroes or the villains. He says it so frequently, it's practically a Catchphrase.
  • No-Respect Guy: Aegis may be the most down to Earth compared to the first three party members (aside from his Avalanche obsession), but no one ever takes him seriously and he constantly gets the short end of the stick.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite otherwise being the most reasonable member of the party, he's incredibly hot-headed and can be just as goofy, quirky, and willing to go along with whatever antics they get into as the rest of them.
  • Oblivious to Love: Subverted. Turns out he knew that Rebecca had feelings for him, but he didn't do anything because of his own obstinacy.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After witnessing his parents being branded as transgressors and presumably killed by the Enforcers, Aegis wants to slaughter everyone in his entire village for condemning his parents out of hatred. However, Kanata and Vicious manage to stop him from killing people despite how heartless they are.
  • Stone Wall: Downplayed. Aegis has one of the lowest attack stats in the game, with his R version having the lowest max attack stat in the game, and his SSR version having the fifth lowest. On the flip side, his R version has the second highest max defense, and his SSR version has the highest max defense in the game. However, he also has one of the lowest max HP stats in the game as well. This means he can tank hits well, but he can't deal much damage back, and his overall tankyness is less than others.
  • Tears of Joy: After Aegis realizes Ivis saves his parents from being killed by the Enforcers, he shed them out of relief and joy that his parents are alive.
  • You Are What You Hate: Aegis unintentionally became something he hates the most: a transgressor, after the King framed him for killing his wife.

A journalist with a penchant for lying. Despite her perky, eccentric personality, Yuna is willing to do anything dangerous if it means pursuing the truth. She cooperates with Vicious in running a black market information store.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Yuna saves Kanata and the others just in time from being killed by the Medagal soldiers.
  • Blade on a Rope: She specializes in fighting with kunai that are attached to rings on her fingers via strings, allowing her to attack her foes from range.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a well-endowed chest that's emphasized by the cleavage on her outfits. Several male characters take notice of her chest, even Makima even nicknames her "Boingy Lady" due to it.
  • Camera Fiend: As a journalist, Yuna takes pictures of the crime scenes and makes memories with her invention, enpicturator, instead of using her vision orb.
  • Childhood Friend: Yuna has been Penelope's friend since they were children and is always protective towards her.
  • Consummate Liar: One of her specialties, she can talk anyone into almost anything. Which is a handy skill to have as an information broker. In just her first meeting with Kanata and Misella, Yuna says that she's the Sole Survivor of an attack that left her people dead except for her, then admits that she was lying to mess with them. Fittingly, when Yuna gets her Stain of Guilt, it's on her tongue. Ironically, the incident that got her the Stain of Guilt was when she used Brutal Honesty instead of lying, which she darkly notes.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Invokes this in the English localization, as she speaks with a French accent to sound more flirtatious.
  • Fear of Thunder: Yuna is terrified of thunder and lightning and can't stand the sound of thunder.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys making up bizarre stories just to see if people believe it.
  • Gratuitous French: Her dialogue in the English localization is written like she has a French accent, and she'll occasionally pepper her words with French, like "tres bien!" and "Allons-y!" She confesses to exploiting this because Everything Sounds Sexier in French. Especially gratuitous since the equivalent to the language she speaks in Crestoria is cited as being some sort of lost civilization. Of course, that could also be a lie.
  • Has a Type: In Kanata Chapter "The Men from the Boys", Yuna's sexual preference is a manly type, a man of few words, not foul-mouthed, calm and collected, but willing to let his fists do the talking.
  • Heroic Vow: Yuna makes a vow to never use her vision orb again and only use her enpicturator to take pictures. The reason Yuna never uses her vision orb again because she once used it on Penelope’s mother Bernette who physically abuses Penelope during the acting lessons. She thought Bernette almost beat up her daughter to death. After the Enforcers took Penelope’s mother right in front of her, she was devastated despite the horrible treatment her mother did to her.
  • Intrepid Reporter: She's a journalist who's unafraid of putting herself into dangerous situations when pursuing the truth about a story, and she's quite capable of defending herself.
  • I Will Find You: Non-romantic example. Yuna is currently looking for a transgressor and former test subject of Malholm named Genitz, who may or may not be alive. Genitz is Penelope's father, and Yuna is searching for him in order to make up for the guilt she feels of condemning Penelope's mother. However, by the time the party finds Genitz, he's already dead since he been made into a test subject by Malcolm.
  • Irony: She's a journalist who enjoys spinning stories, and is a Consummate Liar. When Penelope gets worse after the festival, Yuna attempts to put on an honest Tough Love act in order to make people hope Penelope makes it though her illness, only for someone to spin Yuna's words as her being a manipulator, leading to Yuna being labeled a transgressor. Yuna darkly lampshades this by commenting how she wasn't lying this time.
  • Lost in Translation: In Japanese, she speaks using Geisha speech patterns that make her look exotically flirtatious in the setting and fit with her Japanese-inspired design. Since this couldn't be translated into text, the English subtitles give her a French accent to preserve the "exotic flirt" part since Everything Sounds Sexier in French, but now her speech no longer fits with her Japanese-inspired clothing and motif.
  • Master of Threads: She wears rings on her fingers that have strings attached to them, with two kunai at the very end. She can manipulate them with easy via simple movements and is able to generate electricity throughout the strings.
  • The Nicknamer: Yuna has a habit to give strange or affectionate nicknames to people she befriends. She calls Kanata "Kanana", and Aegis "Aegrouch".
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: She attempts to reprimand the townsfolk after the festival for talking about Penelope like she is dead by claiming the performance was bad in order to make them look forward to her next performance. One person watching proceeds to use the Vision Orbs to record it and frames Yuna as being a terrible person for manipulating Penelope, leading to Yuna being dubbed a transgressor.
  • Nothing Up My Sleeve: Yuna wields a pair of daggers hidden under her sleeves.
  • Support Party Member: Yuna has a very defense-focused stat spread (high HP and Defense but low Attack power, even lower than Aegis, to say nothing of her Memoria Stone, which grants a considerable Evasion boost), but both of her skills lower enemy stats, one of which lowers Attack for two turns while having a two-turn cooldown, allowing her a rare case of 100% debuff uptime, while the other skill (which reduces Defense) has a longer cooldown but a much higher damage multiplier and hitcount, which allows her to contribute to combos. Her support nature is reflected in her weapon typing being Arte instead of Dagger, meaning she benefits form the heavily support-oriented Memoria Stones or Awakened skills. In short, while she's no damage monster herself, she's very good at softening up enemies for her allies to kill more easily.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Yuna is the girly girl to Penelope's tomboy.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: In the skit "Getting Jealous", Yuna thinks about tying up Kanata and Vicious together using her blood sin so that she can awaken some "new feelings" inside of them. Kanata and Vicious are grossed out by Yuna's statement.
  • Younger Than They Look: You might be excused for thinking Yuna is in her 20s due to her flamboyant (and revealing) style of dress and her sultry tone of voice, but she's actually 17.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_orwin_01.jpg

A world-weary family man living with his wife Naya and their ten-year-old daughter Aura, mostly living off the money his wife is earning.

  • Abdicate the Throne: Chapter 9 reveals that Orwin is the former king of Toshimina. However, he gave up his position to his younger brother because he didn't want to take responsibility for ruling a kingdom.
  • Broken Tears: Orwin is grieving and heartbroken as he strangles his wife to death after she request him to be killed by her husband.
  • Butt-Monkey: Both his wife Naya and his daughter Aura make fun of his lechery and his deceit to his face. Not that he doesn't have it coming, but Orwin remains the brunt of jokes and insults at the party's expense for a while as well.
  • Death Seeker: Orwin is filled with grief and guilt for killing his wife and his daughter hates him more, he lets his daughter show an image of his actions with her vision orb and gets branded as a transgressor so the Enforcers can kill him. He has lost his reason for living and hopes that he join his wife in the afterlife, but Vicious manages to snap out of his depression and give him a new purpose for living by keeping his daughter safe.
  • Dirty Old Man: He openly hopes to carry Yuna on his back so that he can feel her boobs bouncing against him. Vicious goes a little out-of-character just for the sake of carrying Yuna away himself and getting one over on Orwin.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His bangs conceals his Stain of Guilt on his left eye.
  • I Know You Know I Know: He engages with some back and forth with his wife Naya in Chapter 9-4. It's shown that Orwin knows Naya is lying to him about where she's going during the day, and hinted at that Orwin knows that Naya is the man-eating monster that's been terrorizing the citizens of Toshimina for a while.
  • I Lied: He tricks Kanata into falling into a pit, all to sell Kanata's location for money. Orwin lied about knowing a way into the library that Kanata wanted.
  • In-Series Nickname: In Orwin Chapter, "What's In a Name?", Yuna calls him "Orboo".
  • Insecure Love Interest: While he loved Naya, he always felt insecure around her because she always insisted he was a good person, making him feel she was too good for him. It's after he has to Mercy Kill her that he realizes that he was afraid of both losing her, and afraid that he wasn't good enough for her.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Orwin may be a a liar, good for nothing and willing to do anything to earn money, but he does have a point that Kanata shouldn't always trust people so easily based on his first impression of them. It makes sense, since Kanata's past actions in trusting Forte and Assid, who he thought to be good people, was resulted in Sonia getting kidnapped by them and almost destroying the entire town.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Orwin is forced to strangle his wife Naya to death as a Mercy Kill because she wants him to be the one to kill her since she's dying from the fatal wounds she received from the Man Eater.
  • Older Than They Look: He's 34 years old, and the older member of the group.
  • Power Fist: Orwin wields one as his blood sin, House Asunder.
  • Promoted to Playable: Orwin becomes a playable character before he makes his official debut in the main story for the limited quest "A Stolen Love. A Stolen Right".
  • Riches to Rags: Orwin gave up his position as ruler of Toshimina to his younger brother. As a result, he lost all the rights and privileges of royalty and became a civilian. That said, Orwin retains at least a few perks, such as being able to get into a restricted section of Toshimina's library that ordinary citizens can't go to.
  • Sixth Ranger: He joins the team much later in the story at the end of Chapter 9.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Orwin is strongly against hurting kids, he even refuses to fight Makina, who looks like a child. Instead, he tries to reason with her to stop fighting and killing transgressors.
