Kirito Town / Ruis na Ríg

Players

     Hyme / Trish Mills

Hyme / Trish Mills

Agil's wife, and a player of the VRMMO "Insectsite", who got transferred into Unital Ring alongside some party members in her mantis avatar.

  • Ascended Extra: Before Unital Ring, we only know of her through Agil and she never appears in person. Come Unital Ring, she appears as a major supporting character.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Refers to Agil/Andrew as "Andy". This later extends platonically to Kirito, who she calls Kiri.
  • The Bartender: Like her husband, she serves as one for the Dicey Cafe, and was this full-time while Agil was in SAO.
  • Interspecies Romance: Played With. This doesn't apply IRL, where they're both human, but in Unital Ring, Agil is a Gnome-turned-human while Hyme is essentially a human-sized mantis, which can give off this impression.
  • I Will Wait for You: When Agil was trapped in SAO, she kept the Dicey Cafe running for when the game ended, knowing how much the place meant to him.
  • Sinister Scythe: Zig-Zagged. Technically, she's an unarmed fighter due to her mantis avatar having built-in weapons in the form of her bladed arms. However, since Unital Ring runs on a similar weapon skill system to SAO and ALO, she was a given a Scythe skill in the transfer, allowing her to use Scythe Sword Skills.
  • Slaying Mantis: Her Insectsite Avatar is a praying mantis, which causes Kirito's group to mistake, as well as her party members who also came in their bug avatars, to mistake them for hostile mobs and nearly attack them before Agil clears things up.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Coming out of her large, Slaying Mantis avatar is the voice of a mature, adult woman.

     Insectsite Players

Hyme's party members from Insectsite who transferred to Unital Ring with her. Totalling at twenty, Zarion and Beeming, a Rhinocerous Beetle and a Stag Beetle respectively, serve as Hyme's second-in-commands.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: After cheering up Argo over her accidentally getting them chased by The Life Harvester, she jokes that maybe the reason it continued chasing them was because it felt compelled as an eightmore to kill their group of sixes.note . This causes them all to crack up.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: A given considering their game of origin. This initially gets them mistaken for enemy monsters by Kirito's group before Agil recognises Hyme and clears things up.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After the giant green wasp queen recovers and retakes to the air, with Misha's Flechette Storm on cooldown, Needy, a member with a grasshopper avatar, propels himself off of Misha and shoots a web at it, grabbing it and dragging it back down to the ground, giving Silica and the others a chance to finish it off.
  • Gratuitous English: Unlike Hyme, who was born and raised in Japan after her American parents decided to move there, these guys are American born and raised and therefore only speak English, often requiring Hyme and Argo.

     Holgar

Holgar

An ALO player and leader of the Absolute Survivor Squad, one of the groups who ends up forcibly conscripted into the service of the Virtual Research Society. Upon his and the other parties liberation from Mutasina, he and his allies are quick to ally with Kirito's group.

  • The Leader: Of both his own party, and he seems to be the face of the alliance given that he's the one to address the gathered players. After Mutasina's group is pushed back, Holgar's the one Kirito negotiates with to calm the recently freed players down.
  • The Strategist: During the fight against the golem to reach the second tier of Unital Ring, after the group figures outt how to knock it down, he advises everyone without a ranged weapon to counter-clockwise around the oil puddle to avoid slipping.
  • Super Gullible: He and his fellow team leaders agreed to ally with Mutasina for promising to cast a party-wide buff to pump up the crowd, when in actuality she was actually debuffing them with Noose of the Accursed. She actually calls them out on being so gullible after she shows her true colours.
  • You Remind Me of X: When Holgar makes his introduction at the player gathering, Kirito is immediately reminded of when Diavel introduced himself during the first Floor Boss meeting.

NPC

Bashin

     Yzelma

The Leader of the Bashin camp Silica, Lisbeth and Yui find themselves in. Moves to Ruis Na Rig as part of an expidition of ten Bashin after she imposes a challenge of Silica and Asuna at different times, both of which they win.

  • Action Girl: Implied. We never see her fight, but her buff physique and Might Makes Right views certainly imply she's a powerful warrior, and she's certainly strong if she can lift a log to throw at Silica.
  • Barbarian Longhair: She has long red hair that goes down to her waist.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When The Life Harvester is close to dead but about to Turn Red, making Kirito question whether to perform a full assault or not, they and the Patter use some throwing weapons on it to lessen its HP further, making Kirito more confident in finishing it off.
  • Big Eater: She's the one to suggest holding a feast after the defeat of The Soul Harvester to prevent the meat from going to waste.
  • Brawn Hilda: A large and well-built woman.
  • Fantastic Racism: Implied. She's immediately opposed to Liz, Silica and Yui joining her tribe's scouting party due to them apparently not proving their worth, hinting a generally low opinion of the strength of "Fels" as they call them.
  • Fiery Red Head: Has a head of red Barbarian Longhair.
  • Might Makes Right: She's initially opposed to Silica, Lisbeth and Yui joining their scouting party due to not being convinced that they'd be much help, prompting her to challenge Silica to cut a log she throws at her to prove her skill. She takes a similar stance when invited to come to Kirito Town, with her duelling Asuna over it.
  • Sinister Scimitar: Her weapon is stated to be a thick, curved cleaver that she duels Asuna with.
  • Stripperific: Like the other men and women in her tribe, she wears very little. From what can be seen in an illustration, she wears only leather chest armour that exposes her midsection, along with a gladiator-like skirt consisting only of leather straps that leaves a pair of red underwear exposed.
  • Worthy Opponent: Comes to the regard Silica and Asuna this after they win her separate challenges to them, with her loss to the latter compelling her to join the expedition of tribesman moving to Kirito Town.

Patter

     General

Patter

A race of rat people native to the natural border wall cave. Three of the youngest and supposedly bravest assist Sinon in making her way out before they come into conflict with the Goliath Rana. After it's defeat, twenty of them decide to join a expedition to go live in Kirito town.

  • Big Damn Heroes: When The Life Harvester is close to dead but about to Turn Red, making Kirito question whether to perform a full assault or not, they and the Bashin Tribe use some throwing weapons on it to lessen its HP further, making Kirito more confident in finishing it off.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Of all the races met so far in Unital Ring, the Patter have the worst luck; years ago, they were driven out of the plains they lived in by hordes of giant green wasps summoned by a freak earthquake, were driven even further back by dinosaurs, and then when they finally make a home in a system of caves in the Great Wall Gaiyu, they discover too late that it's also the home a giant, fire-breathing frog, effectively trapping them there.
  • Farm Boy: It's evident that the Patter aren't exactly trained fighters, with their weapons consisting of farming tools like pitchforks and scythes. That's not to say they aren't eager to fight, wanting to join despite Kirito's suggestion that they hide, to which he can only tell them to stick together.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: Instead of traditional weapons, the Patter instead use pitchforks in the place of spears.
  • Too Many Babies: The very day after they repelled Schulz's attempted invasion and fought them off, Kirito logs into Unital Ring to discover that not only have their twenty Patter settlers had children, but they've grown to a size comparable to grade schoolers, and can already speak.
     Chett

Chett

A female patter leading the 20 Patter expedition to Kirito town, and the daughter of the current Patter elder.

  • Action Girl: A female Patter warrior, though most are more Action Survivors than actual warriors, who fearlessly led a charge of her fellow Patter against the Life Harvester.
  • Badass in Distress: During the pre-emptive mission to coat the flowers the green wasps feed on with Lobelia poison, Chett ends up captured. Fortunately, they are able to defeat the queen wasp and rescue her in time.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Get this from Sinon after she relays her and the Patter's reason for fearing the green wasps that are hiding in the cave they went to get through, with the sniper claiming that it's the perfect chance to avenge their ancestors and take the first step in reclaiming their hime. This perks Chett and fills her with new determination, with her informing the group of the wasps' weakness to lobelia flower poison.
  • Deadpan Snarker: After one of Ruis Na Rig's player residents attempts to pick up a lobelia flower without adequate protection and winds up getting poisoned for their carelessness, Chett can only wryly remark how she thought humans were supposed to be smart.
  • It's Personal: After getting motivated by Sinon, Chett becomes very invested in the fight against the green wasps hiding in the cave, to the point of personally joining the mission to coat their feeding flowers with lobelia poison. This unfortunately gets her captured.
  • Poisonous Person: As the daughter of the Patter chief, she was imparted knowledge about the weakness of the green wasps, which was learned thanks to sacrifice of Patter warriors from when they first fought the wasps. Specifically, the poison of the lobelia flower, with this extending to brewing a potent poison to use against them.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Despite fearlessly leading her fellow Patter in the charge against the Life Harvester, she and her companions are noticeably nervous at the prospect of fighting the green wasps guarding the cave the group wants to use as new ore source. This is because in the distant, the Patter were driven out of their ancestral home by those very kinds of wasps

Pets

     Aga

Aga

A Long-Billed Giant Agamid and the first monster the groups' tamed monsters, courtesy of Asuna.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: It's description of a cross between platypus and dinosaur can bring a rather silly image to mind, but it's native to the same area as a Thornspike Cave Bear, which Kirito speculated to be level 10, and proves to be a capable combatant when the group gets into fights. In fact, during the fight to defend Kirito town from Bolan's associates, he's in charged with killing anyone who's ends up inside when knocked off the wall, preventing anyone from opening the door to let their allies in.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: "Critter" undersells it in some respects, but it has the head and torso of a platypus and the teeth, hind-legs and tail of a dinosaur.
  • Oxygen Meter: Inverted example. Aga will apparently lose HP if he doesn't enter a body of water every so often.
  • Silent Snarker: Less "silent" and more "unintelligible", on account of being an animal. After Kirito dramatically announces the beginning of the iron age upon making his first ingot, Aga responds by sniffing it and giving a quack that Kirito can't help but interpret as mocking.

     Kuro

Kuro

A Lapispine Dark Panther that was tamed by Kirito during the search for Sinon.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Very Downplayed. It does start out hostile, being a wild animal that was about Kirito's group before being fed meat, but is quick to be friendly to them once tamed, allowing them to use his fur for warmth.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Large and strong enough for Kirito to ride and get to places faster than he would on foot.
  • Panthera Awesome: A large panther monster that are said to be dangerous predators by the Bashin Tribe.

     Misha

Misha

A Thornspike Cave Bear that Kirito, Asuna and Alice encountered while searching for materials to repair the log cabin, which they came into conflict with and killed. Respawning later, it's tamed by Silica after the group is forced to draw it out to deal with a group of invading players.

  • Bears Are Bad News: When first encountered, it's a large threat to it's high level, the group effectively being Brought Down to Normal, and Kirito accidentally deprieving himself of his equipment. Ultimately, they have the be creative in order to defeat it.
  • Beary Friendly: After Silica tames her though, it becomes a lot more relaxed and friendlier, and has no problem letting children ride on her back.
  • Flechette Storm: The "thornspike" in its name stems from it's ability to launch dozens of razor sharp quills at it's enemies.
  • Mighty Glacier: It's massive, hits hard, especially with it's Flechette Storm, and it's tough enough to only lose 10% HP to Leafa's Lysavindr, noted by Kirito to be one of the greatest Ancient Class weapons in ALO that should deal great damage even in the hands of a level 1 player. However, it's not the fastest creature.
  • Squashed Flat: How Kirito beats it in their first encounter. With everyone holed up in the log cabin and the soon to be made Misha ready to smash the door down, Kirito decides to climb up to a beam above the door and have the girls trade all of the wood they collected to him, before dropping it all on the bear and crushing it under the weight.

     Namari

Namari

A Leaden Long-Tailed Eagle. Originally used by Mutasina as a mount during her attempted invasion of Ruis Na Rig, it ends up near death and abandoned by it's previous owner during the battle and is subsequently tamed by Kirito at Yui's request.

  • Dark Is Not Evil: Like Kuro, it's deprives it's name from it's colour scheme, which consists of dark grey feathers, and an even darker beak and set of claws with blueish tints at the sharp points.
  • Heel–Face Turn: It initially served as a mount for Mutasina so she can cast Noose of the Accursed from the air uninterrupted, and initially tried attacking Kirito when he attempted to tame it. With enough persistence however, Kirito's able to pull it off, and it's now on their side.
  • Meaningful Name: Gets named based on his dark grey colour scheme, specifically the term "namariiro" which refers to lead, as Sinon shot it down during the battle before it's recruitment.

Other Players / Communities

Bolan's Party

     General

A group of players seeking food and shelter that Kirito and others encounter early in Unital Ring, who then end up coming into conflict with them.

  • Ambition Is Evil: Based on the timer in the menu's and the words of the mysterious voice at the end of the grace period, they quickly concluded that Unital Ring was some kind of competition with a prize waiting at the end for the winner. This leads to them trying to kill Kirito's party when they learn who he is, figuring out that taking out one of ALO's top players before he can get proper gear would give them a huge advantage. Kirito even speculates that they would have eventually betrayed each other if it meant being the last one standing and achieving victory, assuming they really believed the mysterious voice from the end of the grace period.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: They start off friendly enough, the worst they do being asking for food and shelter in exchange for their map data, but they quickly reveal themselves as ruthlessly ambitious when they try to kill Kirito for an advantage at winning Unital Ring.
  • Defiant to the End: Even after the death of Bolan, the remaining members continue to fight to the last man. Though Kirito speculates that it was less out of Villainous Valor, but more due to their belief in Unital Ring being a Last Man Standing scenario, meaning that their leader dying wouldn't factor in much since they're technically only out for themselves.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Downplayed. To quote Bolan, they were "nobodies" in ALO, but when Unital Ring began, they found themselves having a major advantage since their gear, unlike more powerful, legendary gear, ended up retaining their lightness while keeping their stats, which were more powerful than things such as the crude stone knives Kirito's group made, while leaving players with more powerful weapons that retained their high equip requirements at a disadvantage. This, along with paranoia and ambition, leads to them being the Starter Villains of Unital Ring with their attempt to kill Kirito to secure an advantage down the line.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Not only is their attempt at betrayal foiled and they're all killed, but their gear that was dropped upon death is then smelted down to help in the log cabin repairs, meaning they more than likely won't be getting it back after Unital Ring ends.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Due to being able to keep their starter gear after the transfer, they're this compared to the under-equipped Kirito, Asuna, Alice and Leafa. Fortunately enough, Kirito's complete lack of armour gives him enough of a edge in speed to avoid their attacks.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Upon learning of Kirito's status as a high-level player, they figure that they should kill him before he gets his hands on more powerful gear, since he could give them competition down the line.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Back in ALO, they were a relatively new party lacking in much renown. When Unital Ring began however, their relatively low-level gear effectively became the most powerful equipment around thanks to retaining their stats while not being powerful enough to require strict equip burdens, making them effective against higher level players who lost their gear and were forced to make weaker armour and weapons or just lacked any.
  • The Paranoiac: They could honestly care less about Kirito's claims that he only cares about repairing his cabin, reasoning that he's very likely to try and win Unital Ring once he's done repairing it.
  • Starter Villain: They're the first Players Kirito and the others come to blows with in Unital Ring.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: When they first encounter Kirito and the girls, they agree to give them some food and a place to spend the night in exchange for information. Upon realizing who Kirito is however, they are quick to turn on their hosts so they can kill Kirito while he's still lacking powerful gear, fearing that he could become competition down the line.

     Bolan

Bolan

The Leader of the group, who wields a two-handed sword.

  • BFS: He wields a two-handed sword.
  • The Leader: He's the leader of his party, and Kirito notes from his immediate orders that he appears natural for the role.
  • Revenge Myopia: He's quite clearly enraged at Kirito for killing Mocri, ordering everyone to at least try and take him out to avenge him. This ignores that the fact that his party took advantage of Kirito's group's hospitality to try and kill them, with Mocri being the one to instigate the conflict.
  • Never My Fault: When Kirito and the others call him and his group for trying to kill them when they had no intention of attacking them, even helping them by offering them food and lodging, he dismissively tries to shift the blame to Kirito for his renown and skill as a player, which he thinks will make him a threat later on.
  • Wrecked Weapon: He tries using his Two-Handed Sword to block Kirito's Vorpal Strike, only for the Sword Skill to shatter it and stab him in the chest.

     Mocri

Mocri

A knife-wielder in the party, who's the first to realize who Kirito is.

  • The Apprentice: Implied. When Kirito commends his knifework, he mentions a "Sensei" who told him;
"Don't only look at one part of the opponent; grasp the whole. Then you'll know what they're aiming for- and what they don't like, you see."
  • Blood Knight: When Kirito manages to land a blow on him while fighting him and Bolan, he responds by smirking and admiring his skill, prompting Bolan to tell him to focus.
  • Devious Daggers: His weapon is a knife, which he uses to sneakily stab Kirito in the gut and wields with a good deal of skill when he and Bolan tag team him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's a backstabbing opportunist who appears accustomed to Player Killing, but even he's surprised when Kirito mistakes him for another Laughing Coffin member with a grudge.
  • Jerkass: Mocri in particular stands out for being the one to instigate the conflict by stabbing Kirito and convincing Bolan to attack him and his friends.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Kirito pays him back for stabbing him in the stomach by killing him with the Sword Skill, Savage Fulcrum, which begins with him stabbing him.
  • Saying Too Much: When Kirito compliments his dagger skills, he mentions a "Sensei" who told him gave him pointers in fighting. When Kirito expresses curiosity at this, Bolan tells him to shut it, implying this "Sensei" wishes to remain anonymous as much as possible.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: Recognizing Kirito from the ALO Duelling tournament back in Februarynote , he's quick to sneakily stab him in the gut and convince his party to kill him and his friends to increase their odds of winning Unital Ring. However, this only serves to get his party killed when their targets put up a fight long enough for the Bashin Tribe, along with Silica, Lisbeth and Yui, to pull a Big Damn Heroes and give Kirito new gear and fight alongside them, quickly turning the tables and getting them all killed.

     Schulz

An associate of Bolan's group, who organises a raid group to attack the group's budding town while Kirito and some others were looking to rendezvous with Sinon.

  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Him setting fire to the surrounding forest did help his group get an edge, but Kirito uses it to his side's advantage by throwing all the meat he and the others collected during their excursion into the fire, using the smell to draw out the Thornspike Cave Bear. This forces him to have his group focus on it and leaving open to attack from Kirito's group.
  • Hypocrite: It's not touched upon, but Kirito can't help but be annoyed by Schulz's groups use of the term "enemy attack" in response to their Big Damn Heroes moment considering the whole fight's happening because he attacked their budding village. Additionally, he later claims that Kirito attacking them in response to their attempted invasion is "poor form" with absolutely no hint of irony.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: "Kirito... You're... Really..."
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Along with his spear, he carried a shield.
  • Playing with Fire: Kirito notices that he possesses reddish hair and tanned skin, suggesting that he was a Salamander player before the merge.
  • The Strategist: He led his raid group with precise tactics and careful planning, with him having set the forest surrounding the log cabin on fire to prevent guerrilla tactics being used against them. The moment he dies, his group throws strategy and tactics out the window and opt for an all-out brawl, which they lose.

Virtual Study Society

     General
A group of players that attempt to forcibly coerce a large number of players into a personal army to conquer Unital Ring with.
  • Forced into Evil: Aside from the core four members, the rest of their numbers are comprised by players afflicted with Mutasina's Noose of the Accursed who are forced to follow her orders under the threat of a painfully realistic feeling of suffocation. Fortunately, Kirito is able to destroy Mutasina's Magic Staff, which allowed her to use the spell in the first place and in turn free all those afflicted. In thanks, they take up residence in Ruis Na Rig to man the shops and inns.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: After Kirito manages to destroys Mutasina's Magic Staff, and in turn removes the Noose of the Accursed from both his group and the players she forcibly recruited, the group uses a strange black mist to escape before Kirito can finish off Mutasina.
  • Weak, but Skilled: During the assault of Ruis Na Rig, they, or at least their conscripted members, appear to be fairly experienced VR gamers but their average levels come to 10 or 11, and they only have leather armour. This contrasts them against Kirito's equally or more experienced group with better equipment and generally higher levels, with their main advantage being their larger numbers.
     Mutasina

Mutasina

A female player in charge of the Virtual Study Society. Initially posing as an advocate for a peaceful alliance of players, she's quick to show her true colours by inflicting everyone who came with a unique status ailment that forces them to obey her whims.

  • Achievement In Ignorance: She's made plans to wipe out Kirito's group from Unital Ring to up her chances of victory, not realizing that she inflicted that very group's leader with her Noose of the Accursed due to him spying on the meeting.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Like Bolan's group, her motive appears to be winning Unital Ring and reaching the "land revealed by heavenly light", which is what prompts her afflicting a bunch of players with Noose of the Accursed to get an army that can't possibly betray her and wanting to wipe out Kirito's settlement despite having no personal conflict with them.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: When one of her new subordinates questions why she doesn't just inflict Kirito's group with Noose of the Accursed and is instead opting towards wiping them out, she claims that it's because it takes too long to cast and the magic circle for it is easy to notice, and she was only able to get away with it that time since she tricked them into thinking it'd provide a buff. Additionally, using it in the midst of battle has it's own risks since, as her plan required that she use it on both her forced and genuinely loyal followers, doing so can leave her defenceless against anyone who can either resist the effects or isn't afflicted at all. Kirito was in fact banking on this when he was trying to keep his affliction a secret.
  • Bad Boss: Implied. It's stated that in order to afflict the other gathered players with Noose of the Accursed, those in her group had to be among the crowd to avert suspicion and she had no issue using it to illustrate what it could do to her new forced minions with seemingly no care for her more willing ones.
  • Big Bad: She's looking to be this on the Unital Ring side of things, forcing otherwise innocent players into serving her with her Noose of the Accursed spell, doing so to up her group's chances of reaching "the land revealed by heavenly light", and wanting to wipe out Kirito's group with her new army to up her chances.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: During the meeting between the potential alliance, she acts peppy and friendly to the gathered players, which is no doubt helped by her being an attractive girl. After she casts Noose of the Accursed, she's quick to drop this in favour of being a Card-Carrying Villain who scoffs at the notion of things like friendship and trust truly existing in the Virtual World, citing SAO as an example to Kirito's ire, and advocating hatred, betrayal, deceit and despair.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She scoffs at the idea of friendship and comradery existing in the virtual world, believing there's only room for more self-serving ideals such as deceit and hatred.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: It's hard not to see the parallels between her and Quinella, with Kirito even being reminded of the Pontifex after Mutasina reveals her true colours; they're both attractive, female Arch Mages with Control Freak tendencies who show little regard for anyone who isn't themselves and are callous to those around them. However, whereas Quinella was already the effective ruler of the world, controlled her minions through propaganda and brainwashing, and is hinted to have deluded herself into thinking she's the good guy, Mutasina effectively starts at the same level as most other Unital Ring players, is forcibly controlling her minions with a spell that inflicts Cold-Blooded Torture on them, and is more of a Card-Carrying Villain who believes that virtues like trust and friendship have no place in the virtual world.
  • Control Freak: As she states to the players she tricked into getting afflicted by her Noose of the Accursed, she did so with the purpose of preventing rebellion against her and infighting amongst them.
  • Devious Daggers: A manipulative woman who effectively Blackmails a group of players into joining her cause, and she has a knife as a back-up weapon that she pulls out so she can kill Yui.
  • Evil Sorceress: A female mage player who uses her high magic skill, presumably carried over from ALO or whatever game she was playing at the time, to inflict a large group of players with a status ailment that allows her to suffocate them at her command in order to gain an unwilling army.
  • Forced into Evil: Her use of the Noose of the Accursed, which can allow her to inflict something resembling suffocation of anyone afflicted with it, is for the purpose of forcing the other players who attended the alliance meeting into serving her unquestioningly.
  • Hypocrite:
    • She claims that her using Noose of the Accursed is to ensure that the group is properly unified in clearing Unital Ring. However, her use of the spell alone creates an unfair power balance since she's the one with the all the power, and she can easily use it to kill all her followers once serve their purpose.
    • When one of her new followers sardonically suggests that she just use the Noose of the Accursed on Kirito's group, she states that it'd impractical to attempt. Come the actual battle, she devised a strategy that allows her to use the Noose in an attempt to forcibly recruit them as well.
  • Magic Staff: Being a mage player, she wields one with a diamond shaped point with a eerie purple gem in the centre. This staff is actually what allows her to use Noose of the Accursed. Kirito manages to destroy it during her attempted invasion.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Kirito launches attempts to hit her with a Sonic Leap only for the attack to be blocked by Magis, he notices that while her facial expression was the same, her otherwise cold eyes displayed hints of fear. As a result, Kirito realizes that this isn't the real Mutasina, but a Body Double.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • After revealing her true colours, she's quick to insult the fellow group leaders and their followers for honestly believing someone claiming that they could grant some permanent buff to everyone who came. While callous about it, it's hard not to see her point.
    • She also argues that her reason for her use of "Noose of the Accursed" was because she realized that even if an alliance was properly formed, it'd eventually fall apart as the loss of other threats would prompt the other groups to split up and attack the other. While she's definitely taking it a step too far, her logic is eerily similar to Kirito's speculations about Bolan's group, who suspected that they would have even betrayed each other eventually to reach the "land revealed by heavenly light".
  • Villain Respect: After the group comes close to killing her, with Kirito and Asuna even resisting the Noose of the Accursed briefly to attack only to be stopped by Viola and Dia, she actually commends that they proved to be a bigger challenge than she expected. Even when Kirito uses his Rot Shot to forcibly resists the Noose's effects and uses the chance to attack her, breaking her staff and hitting her in the eye, she responds not with rage, but a pleased smile.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She has no compunctions with kneeing Yui and pulling out a knife with the intention of killing her. Granted, Yui was the one to challenge her in the first place, but try telling that to Kirito.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Kirito manages to destroy her staff, and in turn remove her ability to use Noose of the Accursed, during her attempted invasion.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Due to the numerous safety measures on the AmuSphere, to the point that it can potentially log you out when you simply need to use the bathroom, Mutasina's "Noose of the Accursed" isn't actually capable of causing real choking, meaning she can't kill anyone with it no matter how long she leaves it active. However, this doesn't change how the sensation, as Kirito can attest to, is very realistic, to the point that even knowing the choking is fake won't change the fact that you could very well think you'd die and want to log out, meaning that you can't just simply try to ignore it as Klein tries suggesting.

     Viola and Dia

Viola and Dia

A pair of swordswoman who serve as two of Mutasina's lieutenants.

  • The Quiet One: Are both described as being rather untalkative, and don't say a word when Kirito and Asuna briefly clash with them. The most one of them talks is when ordering the VSS's unwilling army to find higher ground when Kirito's group break their own dam to flood the area.
  • Signature Headgear: The both of them wear a tricorne-esque hat with a feather in them.
  • Spanner in the Works: Kirito and Asuna probably could have finished off Mutasina and destroyed her staff after her fall off her bird mount, even with the Curse affecting them due Heroic Willpower, if not for these two also resisting the effects long enough to
  • Those Two Girls: They're apparently seen together often, even tag-teaming against Kirito and Asuna briefly.

     Magis

Magis

A dark mage who serves as one of Mutasina's lieutenants. Is the mysterious "sensei" who taught Bolan's group how to fight.

  • Affably Evil: Friscoll describes him as being pretty friendly once you get to know him.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Kirito questions Mutasina's Body Double on whether or not she agrees with VSS' actions, Magis complains about his need to try pushing his standards of play onto others. It doesn't appear to occur to him how maybe coercing a large group of players via what can be summed up as Cold-Blooded Torture is in any way taking things too far.
  • Evil Mentor: Is the "Sensei" who taught Bolan's group, and presumably others, PvP combat.
  • Fingore: To get his sword of out Magis' staff, Kirito attacks him with the Horizontal Sword Skill, breaking the staff and cutting off Magis' fingers, which has the added benefit of preventing him from casting.
  • Magic Staff: Like Mutasia, he wields one. While not as visually impressive, it's shown to be rather durable, with Magis using it to block Kirito's attempted Sonic Leap on Mutasina's Body Double.
  • Villain Respect: As he and the others are using a strange black smoke to retreat, he compliments Kirito and expresses hope that they'll meet again.

Apocolyptic Date

     General

A faction of players who were transferred from the VR game, Apocalyptic Date, where everyone plays as anthromophorbic animals. Among the transferred games, they're tied with Asuka Empire as the ones to have made the most progress in exploring Unital Ring.

  • Psychological Projection: Being among the two player groups that have made the most progress in exploring Unital Ring, it's evident that they've adopted a competitive streak, best shown in the fact that they sent 200 players as an advance force when they accessed the next area, whereas Kirito's group sent only about 14. As such, while they did require Yui's abilities as a translator to negotiate with the Dark Elves for their friends' release and potentially their help in progressing, they assumed that the ALO players would refuse them since their situation would put them at an advantage, hence their decision to kidnap her instead. This leaves them stunned when Yui responds to Otto's rhetorical question of if they really would have helped if they simply asked with a simple "of course."
  • Didn't Think This Through: After their friends are kidnapped by Dark Elf NPCs who they can't properly negotiate with due to not understanding their language, they learn of Kirito's group getting two NPC groups on their side with the help of Yui. However, instead of trying negotiate with them for their help, they instead opt to just kidnap Yui under the assumption that the ALO group would be unwilling to help due to being just as competitive as them, they instead decide to just kidnap Yui and force her to do it. If the nature of their attackers didn't catch Kirito and Asuna's interest, they would have thrown away their one chance of saving their friends out of blind mistrust.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Downplayed on two counts, one being that they're not particularly evil. Upon hearing about how three of their number were captured trying to scout out the Dark Elves, Kirito expresses some sympathy since with dying merely meaning losing some experience and loot, being imprisoned in-game is quite possibly the worst thing that can happen to an MMO player. Not that it means that they're Easily Forgiven for attempting to kidnap Yui, which is where the other count comes in.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Downplayed. When their kidnapping attempt is foiled and they're forced to negotiate, the most they offer in exchange for Yui's services is a non-aggression pact, which is all but pointless since the AD and ALO's groups' respective routes are miles apart, and a not-so-tangible offer for a physical reward. Kirito himself recognises that this is a bum deal, with the only thing making him considering it being the Lysula Dark Elves their group apparently ran into.

     Masaru

Masaru

A monkey player who kidnaps Yui on behalf of his group.

  • Breath Weapon: He has the ability to breath fire, which he uses to stop Kuro and Aga's charge on him.
  • Blown Across the Room: When Asuna manages to strike him with a Linear, he's seen flying across the field.
  • Punny Name: His username contains the Japanese word for Monkey, "Saru".
  • Smarter Than They Look: Downplayed. His voice is stated to sound rather intelligent and eloquent for a bipedal monkey who gave himself an obvious Punny Name.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Downplayed. He and his group were fully intending to kidnap Yui, with Masaru being the one to do the deed. However, throughout the entire subsequent chase, he never actually did anything to harm her, with his health bar only appearing and marking him as an enemy after he breaths fire on Kuro and Aga when they try pouncing him.

     Otto

Otto

A large tiger man.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Attempts this when Kirito questions why their group didn't just approach them to ask for Yui's help, to which he asks if they really would have helped them. Instead of a Touché, he gets an Armor-Piercing Response in the form of Yui, the girl they kidnapped, saying that they absolutely would have, leaving him and his group in a Stunned Silence.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: A large tiger-man armed with two-handed battle-axe.
  • Decapitated Army: Downplayed. Kirito is able to deal significant damage to Otto and is inches away from killing him, but Ralcas is quick to offer surrender if he'll spare him.
  • The Leader: The leader of the small group of AD players spearheading Yui's kidnapping, rushing in to help Masaru when Kirito and Asuna catch up and attack him.

     Ralcas

Ralcas:

A racoon player armed with a short spear.

  • Hypocrite:
    • After Kirito is able to pin down Otto and prepares to decapitate him, Ralcas is quick to surrender and beg that Kirito spare them. This proves to further enrage Kirito, angered at them expecting mercy after trying to kidnap one of them especially Yui, but he's able to calm himself down and accept the surrender.
    • When explaining the AD group's reasons for trying to kidnap Yui, he complains about how unfair the Dark Elf NPC's immediate hostility and refusal to negotiate with the AD players is. Again, this is coming from an attempted kidnapper who would didn't even want to try negotiating with the one group who could help them. Otto actually calls him out on this, stating that by that logic, everything they ran into in Unital Ring is unfair.
  • Weapon Specialization: Wields a short spear.
  • Shout-Out: Zig-Zagged. His avatars name is suggested to be an anagram for the Rascal the Raccoon, but it's so lazily done in Kirito's eyes that he thinks he might as well have just named himself Rascal.

     Azuki

Azuki

A fox player and the groups sole female.

  • Devious Daggers: A fox-woman stated to be one of her groups' scouts, armed with a dagger.
  • Gargle Blaster: Azuki gets the displeasure of being subdued via Kirito shooting his Rot Shot at her, assaulting her nostrils with the smell and some of it getting into her mouth for good measure.

NPCs

Bashin Tribe

     General
A group of tribalists who Liz, Yui and Silica encounter.
  • The Beastmaster: As revealed when ten of them move to Kirito Town and witness Kuro and Misha living there, they seem to display greater respect to people who can tame dangerous monsters as opposed to hunt and kill them. This causes them to highly revere Silica.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: It turns out the grass Liz and Silica were using to make rope is something they eat. Liz and Silica compare the stew they made with it with shirodatsu / niimojinote .
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: They speak in a strange language described to sound warped and distorted, as if subject to several layers of noise filtering. Yui is able to realize that it's multi-layered Japanese based on the Seed Nexus, and is able to decipher it to communicate with them.
  • Stripperific: Noted to not cover up much skin, to the point that Silica notes that even if the grace periods before she and Liz can get new gear and they're forced to go around in their underwear, they probably wouldn't stand out too much as a result.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Thornspike Cave Bear Meat is apparently is considered a delicacy among them.

Ornith

     General

A race of Bird People who Sinon encounters on her first day in Unital Ring. After helping them kill a dinosaur that have been eating their livestock, they welcome her with open arms.

  • Bird People: Just short of the ability of flight, they possess many bird characteristics.
  • Gun Nut: All the warriors in the village fight with muskets. When Sinon leaves their village, a pair of siblings gift her with their deceased grandfather's.
     Fikki and Ufelm

Fikki and Ufelm

A pair of sibilings from the village. Sinon meets the latter when she helps the Ornith kill the dinosaur threatening their farms, and the former at the subsequent celebratory feast.
  • Cheerful Child: Fikki, being very enthusiastic and friendly towards Sinon.

Hostile Monsters

     Goliath Rana

Goliath Rana

A giant red frog residing in the cave the Patter reside in, cutting them off from leaving. Encountered when the group attempts to reunite with Sinon, assisting her and some patter warriors in fighting it in the process.
  • Amphibian at Large: Is a giant, fire-breathing frog.
  • Breath Weapon: It uses magic to launch fire balls from it's mouth.
  • Multi Purpose Tongue: Naturally, being a frog. It uses it to grab Kuro, and Leafa's attempt to cut just ends in the both of them getting knocked away.
  • Playing with Fire: It's the first enemy encountered to utilise magic, namely a magical circle it creates with it's mouth that allows it to shoot fire balls. Upon defeat, it drops a fire magicrystal that's then given to Yui.
  • Wall Crawling: It's able to jump onto the ceiling of the cave
  • Super-Toughness: It has an especially tough, which makes it difficult to do any meaningful damage to it with her musket when it does it's Wall Crawling, and she can't use Hecate due to the angle when it's on the ceiling and it moving too fast on the ground.
  • Zerg Rush: How it's defeated. After Yui uses a Sonic Leap to knock it down, the rest of the group, with the Patter, attack and whittle it's health to zero, with Sinon finishing it off by jamming her Optical Pistol in its' mouth and firing.

     The Life Harvester

The Life Harvester

A large, centipede-like creature encountered after it pursues Hyme and Argo to Ruis Na Rig. Appears to be a re-skin of the Skull Reaper from SAO.

  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Imagine the Skull Reaper with flesh, and try not to have nightmares.
  • Draw Aggro: Like in the fight with it's original in SAO, Kirito and Asuna draw it's attacks and deflect them with synchronised Sword Skills while two other groups led by Klein and Agil respectively attack it's sides.
  • In-Series Nickname: Post-mortem, Kirito decides to refer to it as a "harv" and the meat they got from it as "harv meat".
  • Palette Swap: Appears to be a larger version of the Skull Reaper with skin as opposed to being all bones. Fortunately, it shares it's original versions attack patterns, allowing Kirito, Asuna, Agil and Klein to lead the others in fighting and killing it.
