Team Memento Mori (MMTM)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mmtm.jpg
From left to right: Jake, Summon, Lax, David, Kenta, Bold
A high-level GGO team who placed 3rd in the first Squad Jam tournament.
     General
  • Badass Driver: They all seem to be adept at using vechiles most ordinary people would never have used in their lives, such as the hovercrafts in SJ1 and the armored Jeeps in SJ2
  • Boring, but Practical: There's nothing that particularly stands out about their team, and they use a pretty standard loadout of assault rifles and machine guns in contrast to the more exotic and disparate loadouts of other squads. But what they do have is a good sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and tactics that puts them at a major advantage over others. With the exception of their machine gunner who uses an HK21 in 7.62x51mm, all their guns are chambered in 5.56x45mm and the five members of the team that use assault rifles that can feed from STANAG magazines, or have modified their weapons with a STANAG-compatible magwell, so they can share ammo when the situation calls for it.
    • They start to downplay this slightly in SJ3, with Lax using a Sniper Rifle and David, surprisingly enough, being inspired to get a photon sword after his loss to Pitohui in Squad Jam 2.
  • Climax Boss: Serve as this in the first Squad Jam, ambushing LM with hovercrafts before being taken out by M, making them the opponents they fight before SHINC.
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • As David explains to Jake in SJ2 when they see a group of Squadrons banding together to take on PM4, if someone went to them offering an alliance, they would have pretended to hear them out before shooting them while their backs were turned.
    • In the mall battle of SJ4, with it just being David and Kenta, they initiate "Operation Sneaky Sneakers"; sneaking around and keeping their heads down while taking out anyone they get the chance to, even finishing an injured Beralto after Shirley destroys his rope and causes him to fall to the bottom floor.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Against most teams they can deal these with ease, but against the main characters they started off on the receiving end before putting up better fights as time went on.
    • In the event that they have to go through Squad Jam prelems, such as in the first ever one and the third Squad Jam, they're often on the giving end.
    • In the first Squad Jam, they're noted to have split up into two groups to take out the two neighbouring teams when they first spawned. Then after the above, they happened upon a team that camped out in a downed spacecraft and while they initially decided to leave them be due to their ability to snipe anyone who came close, they were able to deal with them easily when they happened the hovercrafts, dodging the snipers' shots as they approached and were able to dispatch them quickly once the battle went indoors, with the team splitting off to get picked off one by one and the leader attempting to take them out in a failed suicide attack.
    • While they start off with the element of surprise and have the advantage in mobility, their fight against LM was ultimately this, with M's armoured shield that blocked their bullets and his Improbable Aiming Skills that allowed him to fire without the Bullet Line meant they were beaten with relative ease.
    • Shortly after spawning in SJ2, they're able to deal with ZAT by donning white camo cloaks and sniping at them from a distance, with David killing Thane with a headshot.
    • They end up on the receiving end again when they fight Pito in SJ2, with her taking them by surprise from inside the room and taking four of them out one-by-one, before coming out and swiftly dispatching David and Jake.
    • Like LLENN, SHINC and T-S before them, they were dealt with quickly by the NPC Team in the Test Play, four of them having triggered a bomb upon entering the castle and the other two being dealt with after by a grenade.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • Each member carries cloaks for different environments for better concealment and the AR-toting members have modified their guns to accept the same STANAG magazines in case they need to share ammo, which they reinforce by also having ammo pouches on their backs for anyone behind them to take.
    • In SJ4, upon discovering a locomotive at the beginning, they decide to not use it since it'd make them easy targets so early on, but Booby Trap it for anyone dumb enough to come by it and think using it will be a good idea. This leads to the death of Cole later on when T-S is pursuing him.
  • Devious Daggers: While they forgoed pistols for a while, save David, all of them came equipped with combat knives. They seemed to prefer using these for guerrilla tactics, such as in SJ3 where they silently ambushed teams and stabbed them to death.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Considering David's tactical genius and their overall combat skills, a lot of the team's losses could be attributed to his. That being said, he takes efforts to learn from his mistakes;
    • In the first Squad Jam, five out of six members of the squad get taken out by M exploiting the system by aiming without system assist, thereby preventing the Prediction Line from appearing.
    • In the second Squad Jam they get completely caught off guard by Pitohui's Photon Sword. David in particular managed to fight back, only for Pitohui to activate the secondary blade on the other end of the hilt.
    • In SJ3, David's taken off guard and slashed to ribbons when Pito whips two extra Photon Swords after her first runs out of charge.
    • In SJ4, David and Jake's pincer attack on Pito is foiled when Shirley sniped Jake's trike, blowing it up and killing him. Very much Justified seeing as he didn't even know about Clarence and Shirley since they arrived seperately before the match, and the duo split off from LPFM after defeating DOOM.
    • In SJ5, MMTM's charge on what was left of LPFM and SHINC that otherwise would have been surefire win is foiled by the sudden appearance of the ghost players, with Pito having convinced a good portion of them to assist LLENN by hindering MMTM and ZEMAL. This disorients them, preventing from seeing where they're aiming and unable to see LPFM's bullets and grenades coming.
  • Electrified Bathtub: How they're killed in SJ3. As they're making their way through the courtyard to the control room of the "There is Still Time" where Team BTRY is hiding, Pitohui activates the sprinkler system to cover the whole area in water and then its power generator so that each subsequent drop would carry an electrical charge which spreads throughout the now wet room, killing them instantly.
  • Friendly Rivalry: They seem to have this with SHINC. Their leaders express interest in fighting each other multiple times, but they interact amicably and make a silent agreement in SJ3 to not attack should they encounter one another since they both want a shot at LPFM.
  • Graceful Loser: After SJ3 ends, they're noted to be among the teams applauding LLENN for her victory.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: In Squad Jam 2 Pitohui uses her photon sword to cut one of the guys clean in half.
  • Hand Signals: Due to the risk of relying on the provided comm itemsnote , the team is well-versed in the use of combat hand-signals, which they display in SJ4.
  • Informed Attribute: Despite many, including themselves, claiming that their specialty is indoor combat, they prove themselves to be effective in various other fields such as outdoor combat, vehicle combat, and guerilla warfare, while their weapon loadout, with the possible exception of David's Steyr STM-556 due to the interchangeable barrels, seem more geared towards outdoor fighting, with them having five, later four, assault rifles, a machine gun, and a Sniper Rifle with not single SMG or Shotgun among them, which is compounded further by the fact that aside from David, all of them refused to carry pistols until SJ4, where the existence of pistol-only zones forced them to get their hands on some. For comparison, a team in SJ2 themed after SWAT Teams, IRL police special forces who enter buildings to take out criminals, are wiped out almost immediately due to a lack of nearby buildings.
  • I Work Alone: While the Test Play is a notable exception, this seems to be the team's stance towards forming alliances with other teams in Squad Jam, with David saying he would have pretended to hear them out and wipe them out when he got the chance.
  • Jumping on a Grenade: In the light novel version of the cabin battle, Pitohui throws an inactive grand grenade to bait out the team, and they fall for it, with one of their members instinctively jumping on the grenade and leaving himself wide open.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Pretty the rest of the team's reaction to David being the team's representative in Team BTRY, either because they're scared at the prospect of fighting him, or because they're worried about their chances without his leadership.
  • Meaningful Name: Their team name means "Remember, you must die," in Latin, which matches their team leader's philosophy.
  • More Dakka: David and Kenta's strategy for the mall battle in SJ4 is summarised as "shoot like hell", equipping their main sidearms, as much magazines as they can carry on their person, and the pistols of their fallen comrades, which with their main sidearms gives them three pistols each, planning to put pressure on and overwhelm any enemies they come across.
  • Obliviously Evil: They function as major antagonists in the second Squad Jam due to their attempts of eliminating PM4 from the tournament, not knowing that Pitohui plans to kill herself and M IRL should she be killed by anyone other than LLENN.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: They, as part of a team-up with ZEMAL, manage to get through the First, Second and Third Ordeals in the Five Ordeals Quest, meeting up with LPFM and SHINC during the Fourth.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: They have definitely earned their reputation as one of GGO's best teams, but in the first two Squad Jams they just get way outmatched by the main characters.
  • Recurring Boss: They are a constant annoyance to Team LF in Squad Jam 2, showing up twice to interfere with their plans and forcing them to deal with these meddlers instead.
  • Shoot the Dog: It's heavily Implied that they, along with ZEMAL, opted to kill their canine companion at the end of the Five Ordeals quest, not realizing that it was a Secret Test of Character by the Novelist and in turn failing the quest.
  • Skeleton Motif: Downplayed: Their team's insignia is a skull with a knife in it's jaws.
  • The Squad:
    • David is The Leader and The Strategist, coming up with the bulk of the team's battle plans and often directing them in battle. And with his STM's long barrel mod, scope, and under-barrel Grenade Launcher, he also doubles as the Cold Sniper and Demolitions Expert.
    • Jake is The Lancer, and also serves as The Big Guy, despite appearances, by being the only member to use a Machine Gun. He also served as their sniper for a time until Lax took over.
    • Lax started off as The Smart Guy by virtue of being the resident Gun Nut, but from SJ3 onward he has taken the role of the Friendly Sniper, acquiring a Sniper Rifle, practicing extensively with it, and gaining a number of skills to increase his accuracy.
    • Bold is the closest the team has to Demolitions Expert, as shown when David has him rig a locomotive they find at the start of SJ4 for any poor sap who thinks to use it.
    • Kenta has the highest amount of AGI points in the team, giving him the role as the Designated Point Man and the one to scout ahead, fitting with his Leeroy Jenkins approach.
    • Summon, despite looking like The Big Guy, is actually the team's New Meat, being the team's newest and least experienced member. In part due to this, he often serves as a carrier for Jake's extra ammo or other tools such as mirrors to peek around corners.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: How they meet their first death in the Test Play, four of them entering the castle only to be blown up by remote detonated explosives and the remaining two being taken out by a well-shot grenade.
  • True Companions: While they are all effective combatants, it's their sense of camaraderie and teamwork that gets them as far as they do.
  • Villain Team-Up: "Villain" is a bit of a stretch, as their only claim to that is the fact that they're typically in opposition to LPFM in the Squad Jams, but in Volume 10, they're revealed to have teamed up with Team ZEMAL to take part in the Five Ordeals quest, managing to reach Fourth Ordeal before LPFM and SHINC's and meet up with them in the middle of it in a temporary truce.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • As David states to LLENN during the Test Play when she's delivering a message from Pito, he's choosing to have Kenta keep her restrained since she's too dangerous, which he tells her to take as a compliment. After LLENN wins the Test Play for LPFM, he looks with "70 percent admiration and 30 percent frustration" and said "You did well."
    • Implied with Vivi if MMTM and ZEMAL's brief appearance in Volume 10 is any indication. Despite having not fought her in SJ4, David has her take lead in their team's joint attempt at the Five Ordeals quest, much to LLENN's silent surprise.

David

Voiced By: Junji Majima (Japanese), Greg Chun (English)
The Leader of MMTM, who knew Pitohui in the early days of GGO.
  • Amazon Chaser:
    • SJ4 reveals back when David and Pitohui were teammates, he ended up falling in love with her. In the present however, it's evident that these feelings are long gone, with him likely having been turned off by her Ax-Crazy personality.
    • SJ5 sees him express interest in Vivi after the two worked together throughout the tournament, admiring her skills as a strategist and a markswoman, and he even tries asking her out to tea under the pretence of exchanging strategies. This ends up getting him killed, as he has his team attempt a charge on LPFM to finish them in order to impress her, only to get caught off-guard by the sudden appearances of the ghost players blocking his vision and subsequently blown up by the Grand Grenade LLENN was gonna pull a Taking You with Me with.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Seeing as he's his team's Strategist, this is a given.
    • While his team expresses confusion at how T-S took out ZEMAL in SJ2, their speculations including negotiations breaking down, David is the one to figure out and explains that T-S were able to find a way to get on top of the wall and shot them like fish in a barrel.
    • He's able to figure out SJ4's monster rule as quick as Pito based on the appearance of the scout monster, which he killed with his Laser Blade instead of shooting it, and hearing a nearby group deal with their own.
    • In SJ4, he's quick to realize that the final battle will take place in the mall, since as the most likely location for the pistol-only zone, Pitohui is bound to head there for the final battle since it's where she and LLENN can work best and it's where she'd have the most fun, showing he's just as familiar with Pito's psychology and way of thinking and she is with his.
  • Badass Boast: When Pitohui attacks him with a Photon Sword, he manages to grab her hand to stop her swing, dismissing it as just a toy.
  • Badass Normal: Unlike the main protagonist of the series, who all have Super-Speed, Super-Strength, Improbable Aiming Skills and shields Made of Indestructium, David has no unique skills outside of his rare and adaptable assault rifle. What he does have however is a good knowledge of tactics and gun fighting skill which has allowed him to reach the BoB finals, which even Pitohui wasn't able to pull off, and lead his team to reach the top five in every Squad Jam so far.
  • Benevolent Boss: Downplayed. As a Leader, David is not above sacrificing his comrades, albeit with their knowledge, should he feel it's warranted, but he does care for them and value thier teamwork. The others recognize that part of their reason to make him their Leader was his willingness to own up to his own mistakes. He even chose to forgo taking part in the 4th BoB to focus the month practicing with his team.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When a random player is about to catch an unprepared LLENN and Eva and an injured Vivi by surprise and claim the former's bounty, David shows up and blows his head off.
  • BFG: His Alternative Gear for SJ5 is an RPG-7 like what was used in the Test Play by the NPC Team and in SJ4, which he uses to kill Rosa and assist ZEMAL in destroying the two LPFM and SHINC were hiding out in.
  • Bring It: At the end of the Test Play when everyone parts ways, he dares Pitohui to bring her new Bazooka to the next Squad Jam.
  • Celibate Hero: The rest of his team are surprised that he's familiar with Pitohui, not because he's unattractive, but because his pursuit of success in-game made him largely ignore the few female players there were. That fact he used to be interested in her might have something to do with it.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As the leader of his team, he has no problem on attacking disadvantaged opponents or utilizing tactics requiring Heroic Sacrifices, although so far he's never done the latter.
  • Companion Cube: Seems to view hsi STM-556 in this manner.
  • Courier: Volume 6 reveals that in the real world, David works as a deliveryman for a shipping company.
  • Determined Defeatist: As he reveals to Kenta as they're waiting to make a move, he doubts there's anything they can do to win the Squad Jam with it just being the two of them. Doesn't mean he's gonna just give up on killing Pito and trying to kill everyone else.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: His Handgun is a Steyr M9-A1, which possesses a unique sight with a sizable triangular divot with a smaller three-sided one in front of it. David claims his use of it over a normal handgun is that it's much easier to aim with once you got the hang of it, which his teammates disagree on.
  • Driven to Suicide: After being chosen as the traitor in SJ3, he immediately tries to shoot himself in outrage. His teammates manage to talk him out of it and convince him to play along with the new rule.
  • Enemy Mine: In SJ5, he and Eva end up bumping into each other in the mist while Eva is laying low at a mansion and he happens to bump off a guy she wasn't in a good position to take out. Despite being tempted to take out the other, they decide to work together until they can regroup with their own teams, which inadvertently leads to them pulling another one of these with LLENN and Vivi when one of DOOM's explosion send them to the mansion.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: When Team BTRY is doing introductions, Pitohui introduces him as Daveed and proceeds to refer to him as such for the rest of the tournament. He's very annoyed by this and threatens to kill anyone else who calls him that.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he's a fairly cold and calculating leader, he does value his teammates and teamwork, which is a major contributor to his animosity towards Pitohui and why he tries to kill himself when he's chosen as the traitor in SJ3.
  • Eye Scream: Ends up taking a blade in the eye when he and Pitohui struggle for control over the weapon, only for Pito to activate the weapon's second blade which extends out the other end of the grip.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Tries to do this when Pitohui tosses a Grand Grenade outside the room, not knowing that it was in-active and actually a trap for Lax so Pito could come out and decapitate him.
  • Failed a Spot Check: IRL example. While delivering packages, he ends up muttering about his desire to kill Pito in the next Squad Jam, forgetting about the recorder in his truck, getting him in trouble with his boss.
  • Fair-Weather Friend: While in SJ3 he didn't mind working with Ervin and was even enraged and tried to avenge him when Pito kills him, in the Test Play, he saw no issue with using his team as sacrificial lambs for any mines the NPCs may have planted, since they're one separate teams now.
  • Gun Accessories: David's Stey Manlichier comes equipped with what appears to be a long-range scope and, from SJ2 onward, an Underbarrel Grenade Launcher.
  • Honor Before Reason: In spite of him, and his team, largely being a group of Combat Pragmatists who would ordinarily shoot another team In the Back if they try offering an alliance, David evidently has this in regards to teams; David takes teamwork very seriously and looks down on any and all backstabbing, even if it's within temporary alliances. It's this trait that motivates his disgust for Pitohui and his attempt at killing her in SJ3 after she betrays Ervin's trust and kills him.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: In the climax of SJ4, he gets stabbed by Pitohui after he tries attacking LLENN and Eva, but he manages to unload his handgun into her stomach and take her down with him.
  • Indy Ploy: During LPFM's battle with MMTM at the airport, he's able to free up his hands to use his assault rifle on LLENN and Pito's trike by sticking his combat knife into the accelerator grip to keep the trike moving, allowing him to keep pace with them while shooting.
  • In-Series Nickname: In a similar vein to Eva and her "Boss" nickname, his squadmates tend to refer to him as "Leader" as opposed to his username.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As a Leader, David is an epitome of cold professionalism, the light novels going as far as to describe him to view his teammates as pieces on a chess or shogi board when it comes to planning and that he'd be willing to order them to sacrifice themselves if it meant achieving an objective. However, he does honestly care about his team and a lot of his beef with Pitohui is her utter Lack of Empathy and Team Killer tendencies, even immediately vowing to kill her after she betrays and kills Ervin, who at the time was one of the most hated players in GGO due to how his team won the 2nd Squad Jam.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: In SJ4 as they're both dying, Pito states that she may have fallen for him if she knew he was gonna get so tough. Then when she states she was joking, all he can get out "Why, you bi-".
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In SJ4. While initially he decides to try and go out in a blaze of glory after Jake is killed by Shirley, foiling his chance at killing Pito, Kenta is able to snap him out of it, and he decides to pick Kenta up and retreat.
  • The Leader: A mix of the Mastermind and Levelheaded variety for Memento Mori, being the most experienced player among them and The Strategist.
    • The mastermind aspect is showcased when Lax expresses interest in becoming a sniper. He carefully considers the prosnote , as well as the consnote .
  • Master Swordsman: Downplayed. While he only took to wielding it recently, he has enough skill with his Photon Sword to match Pitohui, who has comparatively more experience, to the point where she's forced to pull out a second one to beat him.
  • Mutual Kill:
    • Scores one against Roy after discovering the hidden door he was shooting at them from during the final charge, the both of them shooting each other in the head.
    • In SJ4, when Pito drops in from above and stabs him while he's attacking LLENN, he's able to unload his entire magazine into her stomach, ensuring he takes her down with him
  • Named by the Adaptation: David was originally unnamed in the first three light novels, and his teammates only referred to him as "Leader". The anime shows that his in-game name is "David". He, however, is referred to by name in Squad Jam 3.
  • Off with His Head!: Or more accurately off with the top of his head, which is how David and another Team MMTM member meet their end at Pitohui's hands after she impales them through the eye.
  • Oh, Crap!: In SJ5, upon learning that, with the mist gone, the rest of map save the castle in the center is gonna fall apart and send anyone still on it plunging to their deaths, he's quick to order his entire team to make a beeline for the castle, even going as far to tell them to avoid combat and even try forming alliances if possible.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In SJ4 when we go back to him and Kenta after MMTM's loss in the airport battle against LPFM, David is acting oddly relaxed, laying on the ground with his gun at his side and his hands behind his head as a pillow, which Kenta finds more than a little creepy. He then reveals that there's nothing they can do right now so they're taking a break before the final battle, but he admits he never pictured himself to be acting so relaxed in a Squad Jam.
  • Pet the Dog: During LLENN's final fight with Pitohui in SJ3, he's among those who cheer her on.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He opts to not use any of his grenades to fire at LPFM and SHINC when they're cornered in a tower in SJ5, since they and ZEMAL still need LLENN alive to serve as bait for the Wannabe Millionaires in an Uriah Gambit.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Pito in Squad Jam 3 after she steers the ship to kill the stranded Team T-S instead of rescuing them, then kills Ervin.
“Pitohui…I knew that you were a completely irredeemable piece of shit, but I thought you at least took the game seriously. It’s one thing to beat your enemies. But involuntary arrangement or not, I didn’t think you’d plot to kill your own teammates. I’ve lost any respect I had for you.”
  • Revenge Before Reason: Generally Averted. Despite his grudge against Pito, he typically approaches his encounters with her and whatever team he's on rather rationally, hardly letting his emotions get the better of him, and is even willing to go along with her alliance idea to take out the NPCs during the Test Play, even being the first team leader to agree with her plan. The closest he's ever gotten to playing this straight is letting LLENN flee to focus on Pito in SJ4 when he and Jake have the both of them pinned down and vulnerable, and even then taking out Pito alone would have still been a major blow to LPFM.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He's not wrong that Pitohui is very screwed up in the head based on her Sadistic and Team Killer tendencies in-game, but considering that she's willing to orchestrate things so that her dying will have her kill herself and M IRL, he's only scratching the surface.
  • Say My Name: David screams Pitohui's name as she kills him.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Feels this way about Pitohui, making killing her a top priority in SJ2 and trying to kill her after she murders Ervin, who was their teammate at the time, in SJ3.
  • So Proud of You: Expresses this to his teammates in SJ3 after they get the better of him.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Downplayed. While he doesn't make it completely top priority, his first thought upon a Squad Jam being announced is usually "How am I gonna kill Pitohui?", and when they do encounter each other, it's likely he's gonna focus on killing her.
  • The Strategist: He appears to be his squadrons main tactician, being the one who makes the plans and gives the orders the others follow without question.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: His death in SJ5 is at the hands of a grand grenade kicked at him by Fuka, which he's unable to react in time to due to the ghost players swarming and obscuring his vision.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Whenever he works with Pitohui, expect it to be a case of this on his end.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: In preparation for the Second Squad Jam, he bought and practiced with an under barrel grenade launcher for his assault rifle.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: While his team still ends up losing SJ4, he's finally able to fulfil the goal he had throughout the last three Squad Jams; Killing Pitohui.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He seems to make it a rule to do this when he's defeated.
    • After the first Squad Jam, he opted to buy and Under-Barrel Grenade Launcher for his STM as a counter for something like M's shield, as well as to grant himself a boost in firepower and range.
    • After his death at Pito's hands in SJ2, he seems to recognize the uses of a Photon Sword and bought for himself with the intent of killing Pito with it. And based on how he was able to have an even sword fight with her despite her greater experience, it's evident he did some training with it.
  • Weapon Specialization: His signature gun is a rare Steyr-Mannlicher STM-556, which possesses interchangeable barrels to give it added versatility. He also has a Steyr M9-A1 handgun chambered in 9x19 Parabellum as a sidearm.
  • We Used to Be Friends: David was part of a squadron with Pitohui a long time ago, but he couldn't tolerate how she was a Death Seeker who held no regard for the lives of others. SJ4 reveals that David actually had feelings for Pito at one point.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: While he takes pride in his ruthless tactics, Pito complimenting him for them gets on his nerves.
     Jake

Jake

Voiced By: Taishi Murata (Japanese), David Vincent (English)
The Second-in-Command and the team's Machine Gunner.
  • BFG: He's the only member of MMTM to use a machine gun.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When the tall member of PM4 pins his comrades down with a bed and prepares to shoot, he shoots at him from the floor below and kills him.
  • Blood Knight: Implied: In the anime and manga, he's often shown wearing a noticable smirk whenever he's in a battle, the only exception being the fight with Pito in SJ2 where's he looks noticably panicked. The manga goes further by having him give an annoyed "tsk" when he doesn't kill M or LLENN with his first round of fire.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Eva kills him with one in SJ5 while he's distracted by the PM.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: He's Hot-Blooded and less tactically inclined than David, but when David's chosen as the traitor in SJ3 and tries to Rage Quit by shooting himself, he's the only one to point out that he wouldn't be able to anyway since the weapons of the participants are disabled until the traitors gather to prevent anyone from killing their team's traitor pre-emptively.
  • Improvised Weapon: Of a sort. While David’s the team’s mid-range sniper, Jake operates as the team’s long-range sniper, which he accomplishes by using his Machine Gun in semi-auto. He gives up this role when Lax offers to take up a more traditional Sniper Rifle.
  • Informed Ability: He's stated to have been the team’s de-facto sniper due to his Machine Gun’s long range, but we never get to see his actual marksmanship skills before Lax takes over the role with his more traditional Sniper Rifle.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: "Love" might be a stretch, but it's evident he's fond of David's more ruthless tactics, sporting a grin when David states they're gonna deal with a neighbouring team once they finish with the monsters and are therefore low on ammo.
  • The Lancer: He's the De-Facto second-in-command, and is fairly different from David. He not only comes off as bit more casual and Hot-Blooded compared to the Stoic David, but he's not as tactically gifted, as shown during his tenure as the team's Leader in SJ3 while David was in Team BTRY, with the narration noting how his plan of advancement on the There Is Still Time is not something David would have done. Also unlike the David, who cares about his team but is prone to viewing them as pieces on a chessboard when it comes down to it, Jake is more reluctant to catch his teammates in friendly fire, as shown during SJ2's cabin battle where Pito uses David as a Human Shield by positioning herself in front of him and out of Jake's view, ensuring he can't fire his machine gun at her without hitting his Leader.
  • More Dakka: In contrast to his teammates, he uses a Heckler & Koch HK23E machine gun as opposed to an assault rifle. Justified as his primary role is to provide support fire, which a machine gun with a large ammo capacity and high rate of fire can easily accomplish.
  • Oh, Crap!: Her verbalizes the team's panic when he sees Team BTRY dropping the lifeboats in front of the holes into the ship.
  • Portmanteau: In SJ4, he starts saying "Nicelee" as short for "Nice, Leader" for whenever David does something impressive or comes up with a strategy.
  • Stronger Than They Look: His appearance may look scrawny, but he has the highest STR stat in the Squadron.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: How he dies in SJ4, with Shirley sniping his trike as he's laying covering fire on Pito and blowing it upnote
     Lax

Lax:

Voiced By: Masaaki Mizunaka (Japanese), Kellen Goff (English)
The team's Gun Nut and eventual sniper.
  • Achievement In Ignorance: Due to Sophie’s poor luck in teleporting to her teammates, Lax is able to immediately kill with a clean shot to the head. And while he lays covering fire on them, he expresses surprises that they haven’t tried shooting him with the PTRD yet, not realising he killed the one who was carrying it.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: In the Light Novel, Lax was the first person to figure out the trick to M's lineless shooting just as he got killed. In the manga, the realization is transferred to David, with Lax dying wondering what the hell happened.
  • Adaptational Heroism: An inversion. In the original Light Novel he tries to perform a Heroic Sacrifice and save David from a Grande Grenade, an upgraded Plasma Grenade, even if it would kill them both anyway. In the anime, he never gets the chance to do this.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Before killing him in SJ5, Shirley manages to shoot off his rifle arm.
  • Bad Boss: His internal narration in SJ5 reveals that he has one IRL, who makes it a point of scolding him in front of everyone and has never once praised him. This is what makes Lax appreciate David, who always praises his team for a job well done and scolds them in private when they screw up.
  • Cool Shades: What makes Lax stand out among his squad mates is his black eye-obscuring sunglasses that he wears at all times. Since sunlight doesn’t affect eyesight in GGO, he mainly just wears them to look cool.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the original Light Novel, he’s killed when he tries to shield David from a fake Grenade explosion and leaves himself open for Pitohui decapitating him while he’s down. In the anime, he’s killed shortly after Summon, having been killed by Pitohui firing her shotgun through the door he was standing in front of.
  • Eye Scream: In SJ5, Shirley takes him out by shooting him in the eye.
  • Friendly Sniper: Takes on this role in the 3rd Squad Jam onward, trading out his H&K G36KV for a MSG90 Semi-Auto Rifle. He's also a pretty friendly guy, attempting to protect David from a Grenade and even asking his team if he could change roles before going ahead with it. He once again makes a Heroic Sacrifice in SJ3, staying behind to lay covering fire on David so the rest of MMTM could get onto the ship without interference, leaving himself to be engulfed by the approaching water.
  • Gun Nut: He’s stated to be the biggest gun freak amongst his squad mates, which is what helps adapt to using a Sniper Rifle. It also helped him, upon being killed, realize M's lineless shooting trick back in the first Squad Jam.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • See Jumping on a Grenade below.
    • In SJ3, he stays behind to lay covering fire on David, who ended up joining team BTRY, so that his team can reach the "There Is Still Time", leaving himself to drown in the rising water.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Invoked. While he couldn't pull anything absurd like learning how to shoot without the Circle like M or KKHC, it's noted that upon taking the role of the team's sniper, he acquired skills to improve his already decent aim to help with his new role. As a result of this and just sheer practice, he's capable of killing something within 2,500 feet in windless conditions.
  • Jumping on a Grenade: In the light novel version of the cabin battle, Pitohui throws an inactive grand grenade to bait out the team, with Lax taking the bait and instinctively jumping on the grenade and leaving himself wide open.
  • One-Steve Limit: The official YenPress translation spells his name as "Lux", which is the same as The Protagonist of the spin-off manga Girls Ops'
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Stated to be this appearance-wise, with his main defining feature being his sunglasses.
  • Undignified Death: Undignified second death. In SJ5, despite his team already being eliminated and thus being unable to further assist them as a ghost, Lax is set upon by a bunch of overzealous fellow ghost players conscripted by Pito who effectively torture him for death, while all he can do is angrily curse the author and his special rules.
  • Unluckily Lucky: Has a case of this in SJJ5. To summarise, he started off close to the castle in the centre and was able to be among the first to enter, but missed the message about the next special rule due to the fog. During his time in the castle, he's able to locate a tower and climbs to get a good vantage point and ended up next to where Clarence and Tanya were camping out, but then his attempts at sniping Clarence just barely misses her head and fails to kill her.
  • Weapon Specialization: Like Kenta, he wields a H&K G36KV. Later on, he switches it out for a MSG90 Semi-Auto rifle to become the the team's Sniper. After the rifle is destroyed in SJ4, he switches to Howa Type 20 with a short scope from his personal collection, presumably until he can get a replacement sniper.
  • Wrecked Weapon:
    • His MSG90 ends up getting snapped when he crashes into Kenta in SJ4.
    • Fortunately Downplayed for his F&D Defense FD338 in SJ5, which is damaged by the ghost players Pito sics on him when they all spawn but is still repairable.

Bold

Voiced By: Ryokan Koyanagi (Japanese), Andrew Russell (English)
One of the team's assault rifle users, who's notable for his exotic appearance.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: He has a lighter skin tone in the anime.
  • Ambiguously Brown: In the Light Novel, he apparently has the darkest skin in the squad.
  • Boom, Headshot!: In SJ4, LLENN lands three shots of her P90 on his forehead.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the first Squad Jam, he's the one who's hovercraft is violently capsized by M's grand grenade, causing him to land on shore and get finished off by LLENN. In the manga, he swaps deaths with Kenta.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: His avatar’s hair is styled in dreadlocks. This, along with his Light Novel and Manga equivalent's brown skin, is stated to give him a very exotic appearance.
  • Eye Scream:
    • Pitohui kills him by stabbing him through the eye with her Photon Sword when he starts shooting through a hole in the wall to kill her.
    • LLENN kills him with a bullet in each eye from her Vorpal Bunnies in SJ5, having caught him off guard with the PM.
  • Hot-Blooded: He’s the first to respond to Pitohui’s surprise counter attack, trying to fire wildly into the room she’s in despite his bullets being unable to pierce the thick wooden wall ,before being stopped by David.
  • It's Personal: He holds a bit of a grudge against LLENN for being the one to personally eliminate him from the first Squad Jam, and is looking for a chance to get revenge. He gets pretty annoyed when she ends up killing him again in SJ4.
  • Multiple Gunshot Death:
    • In the first Squad Jam after he's knocked out of his hovercraft by M's Grand Grenade and lands on the shore, LLENN unloads an entire magazine of P90 into him to finish him off.
    • Suffers this again in SJ4 during the airport battle against LPFM, once more at the hands of LLENN, much to his chagrin.
  • Unknown Rival: He has a grudge against LLENN after her being his executioner in the first Squad Jam, but LLENN herself however either doesn't remember him or is unaware of his grudge, and probably doesn't even know his name until the Test Play where all the squadrons form an alliance against the NPCs.
  • Weapon Specialization: A Beretta ARX-160 assault rifle.
     Kenta

Kenta

Voiced By: Aoi Ichikawa (Japanese), Mark Whitten (English)
One of the team's assault rifle users, as well as the fastest and most headstrong.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: In the light novel and manga, he has black hair as opposed to the blonde in the anime.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How he's finished off by Doc in the Test Play after infiltrating the castle.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Upon entering the castle in the Test Play, he's dealt one by Doc, who ambushes him, shoots him in the head, and foils his attempt at a Taking You with Me by grabbing his dropped grenade and the pin and, with surgical precision, re-inserting the pin to prevent it from going off.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's prone to this from time to time.
    • When David is reminiscing about his earlier days in GGO and his encounters with Pitohui, Kenta bluntly states that he’s sounding like an old man.
    • In SJ3, When the team ends up getting pinned by David's grenade and sniping combo, Jake expresses panic at having to fight their leader, only for Kenta to point out that he's the leader now, much to Jake's annoyance.
    • Then there's this exchange when Fire shows up with his three-squad team.
Summon: A coalition? Who gave them permission?
Kenta: Was that supposed to be a rhyme?
  • Designated Point Man: Being the fastest member of the team, he often serves as this.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the Light Novel, he ends up falling on his back and killed by a grenade Pitohui drops on him. In the anime, Pitohui instead cuts him in half through the wall.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: In SJ4 when David seems ready to make a suicidal charge when everyone else is killed during the fight with LPFM, Kenta is able to talk him out of it and convince him to retreat so they can make one last attack later.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: In the anime, Pitohui kills him by cutting him in half through the wall with her Photon Sword.
  • Ironic Nickname: His squadmates have given him the nickname “Chicken” since he named his avatar after his favorite brand of fast food fried chicken. Despite this, he’s noted to be quite possibly the squadron’s boldest member.
  • It Amused Me: In SJ5, he's pretty pleased with David and Vivi's idea to have him direct nearby players in LLENN's direction so that their teams can make a beeline for the centre, exclaiming that it sounds like fun.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Stated to have little problem with charging into dangerous locations or situations.
  • Oh, Crap!: Suffers one in the Test Play when he sees a man with an assault rifle aiming at him, with his inability to efficiently shoot back prompting him to ignore them. Unfortunately, Doc is waiting behind the door he kicks open.
  • Only Sane Man: It's shown that in the event that David loses his cool, such as when he's chosen as the traitor in SJ3 and tries to kill himself instead or when he's ready to perform a suicidal charge on LPFM after everyone else is killed in SJ4, Kenta's the one who spearheads the effort to calm him down.
  • Portmanteau: Following Jake's lead, he coins the term "Damnlee" as short for "Damn, Leader", and later "funlee" for "You seem to be having fun, leader".
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Not as bad as Lax, but he’s stated to look like your average Japanese guy.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: He ends up on the receiving end of a suicide bomb in SJ4, when Fuka gets close and lets Eva shoot her Plasma Grenades, blowing them both up.
  • Super-Speed: Noted to be fastest member of MMTM.
  • Weapon Specialization: Like Lax, he wields a H&K G36KV. Unlike Lax, who goes on to trade his in to become the team's sniper, Kenta sticks with his G36.
