Team SHINC

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinc.png
From left to right: Sophie, Anna, Eva, Tohma, Rosa, Tanya
A squadron composed entirely of female players and LLENN's final opponents in the first Squad Jam. They also turn out to be the rhythmic gymnastics team that Karen frequently runs into during real life. Their choice of weapons involve Soviet/Russian-made weapons since they're one of the cheapest small arms in GGO.
    In General
  • Ace Custom: Downplayed. When they got the PTRD-41, or "M-Gun", they modified it by replacing its original scope with one that had a longer eye-reliefnote , allowing them to aim long distances without the recoil damaging their eyes.
  • Achievement In Ignorance: Making use of advice they got from Sinon, the group challenged a powerful dungeon monster in hopes of getting an Anti-Material Rifle to use against M's shield, just like she did. They ended up scoring even better, getting the PTRD, an Anti-Tank Rifle. After the fact, they speculate from their use of Russian firearms and Sinon using a French FRF2 when she got the Hecate that what kind of BFG Sniper Rifle said dungeon monster would drop was based entirely on which country the guns you were using against them were from.
  • Amazon Brigade: An entire squad of female players.
  • Batman Gambit: To avoid a confrontation with MMTM at the airport, the team rigs a truck to drive on it's own with a spare machine barrel sticking out as bait of them, and rigging it with explosives in hopes of killing, knowing that David wouldn't simply run away from a fight.
  • Big Sister Worship: When they're not trying to kill each other in Squad Jam, SHINC has nothing but praise and admiration for Karen/LLENN.
  • Brawn Hilda: Eva, Sophie, and Roza all fit this, having very stocked builds for females.
  • Butt-Monkey: SHINC end up really getting the short end of the stick in SJ5. The fog seperation rule prevents them from utilising Anna for their Decoy Leader tactic, who in turn get a massive target on her back and becomes more of a hindrance to anyone she allies with, they lose their signature PTRD when Sophie gets abruptly spawned in Lax's sights and can't react in time to avoid getting killed, Tanya and Rosa are forced to make Heroic Sacrifices, they accidentally kill Shirley when they drop the grenades they were gonna use in a counter-attack on her, and they're once again denied a proper rematch with LLENN when a member of DOOM shows up last minute, prompting Eva to punt LLENN off the ledge to save her.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: They make several real life cameos in the first few episodes, shown watching highlights of the first Squad Jam with Karen in a Flash Forward from Episode 1, passing by Karen in Episode 2, and noticing how tall Karen is in Episode 3. They are revealed to be Team SHINC and the final opponents LLENN faces off against in the first Squad Jam.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The unexpectedness of the situation combined Fukaziroh accidentally firing a Plasma Grenade at them, means that LPFM wipes them out quickly when they finally encounter each other in SJ3, with Roza, Tohma and Anna getting killed at the same time while Tanya is killed shortly after while trying to kill M.
  • Defeat by Modesty: Subverted. In SJ5, after turning an ambush around on their assailants, Sophie and Rosa sneak up on their attackers and proceed to drag to the ledge at the end of the castle's tunnel after the ground collapsed. The two attempt to trick Sophie and Rosa into letting them go by pointing out that their breasts are pressing against them, only for the girls to shrug this off and toss them to their deaths.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: It was only after LLENN defeated them in the first Squad Jam do they finally decide to approach her in real life and become friends with her.
  • Enemy Mine: In Squad Jam 2, after hearing LLENN's situation with Pitohui and the risk of her dying, they agree to join forces and help her out. Using a pincer strategy, Team SHINC serves as a distraction by charging from the south, while LLENN attacks from the north.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Unlike MMTM, who have a firm I Work Alone mentality with few exceptions, such as the Test Play, SHINC has much less issue with forming alliances, albeit they usually limit themselves to one team and it's mostly any with LLENN, with the Test Play where they partnered with their other Squad Jam rivals to take out the NPCs being a notable exception. That being said, they largely displayed disgust with how in SJ2, a large group of teams formed alliance to take out PM4, with plans to do so to the rest of the high-ranking teams such as them and LF, viewing it as cowardly. In fact, the only reason they cooperated with Fire's squadron in SJ4 was because they promised that they would let SHINC and LPFM go one-on-one and would make sure no one interrupts.
    • Despite their near obsessive rivalry with LLENN and desire to fight her, they are perfectly fine with putting their rivalry to the side and even assisting her should there LLENN be saddled with more necessary concerns or be suffering a severe handicap for one reason or another. This includes teaming up with her to deal with PM4 to prevent Pito from killing herself IRL in SJ2, teaming up with her to deal with Fire and his alliance upon learning about the bet where she might have to marry him if he outlasts her, and proposing that they meet up and form an alliance in SJ5 to deal with the rest of the competition before fighting on account of the 100,000,000 Credit bounty on her head.
  • Face–Heel Turn: They are among the teams to have joined Fire's alliance of Squadrons in SJ4.
  • Final Boss: The final team left in the first Squad Jam that LLENN faces.
  • Fire-Forged Friendship: They initially had trouble getting along with each other as a rhythmic gymnastics team, so they opted to play a VR game where they would have different appearances (allowing them to forget their real world conflicts) and work together as a team. After partaking in GGO and the life or death stakes, they finally became close friends with one another.
  • Food as Bribe: LLENN assured their cooperation in Squad Jam 2 in taking on Team PM4 by promising sweets for them like the last time they visited. Though it's downplayed given Eva would have helped either way and the sweets is just a bonus.
  • Forced into Evil: Downplayed. SHINC gets outmatched by the Humvee driving squad sent by Fire's alliance and effectively forced to go meet with Fire to hear him out, yet they still accept the offer.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Memento Mori. Their leaders express interest in fighting each other multiple times, but they interact rather amicably and make a silent agreement in SJ3 to not attack each other should they bump into one another since they both want a shot LPFM.
  • Gamer Chick: By virtue of being an entire squad of female GGO players.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Zig-Zagged. IRL, they definitely come off as Girly Girls (save for Risa), wearing feminine hair styles, possessing Sweet Tooths, and have a stated love of romance manga, but they're very passionate about sports and GGO, to the point that they display a concerning amount of knowledge about guns. In-game however, they can come off as the reverse, acting like Hot-Blooded soldiers who utilize aggressive strategies and tactics, but with some of their feminine traits occasionally slipping into their in-game behaviour.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • To snap LLENN out of her funk after seeing Pito singlehandedly take out MMTM, SHINC and Fuka do a suicide charge on the log cabin where she and M are hold up, getting killed in the process.
    • In SJ4, under Eva's orders, She, Tanya and Tohma planned to take out the Humvees with Grande Grenades while leaving Sophie, Rosa and Anna keep going to challenge LLENN.
  • Hero of Another Story: Their journey to get a weapon powerful enough to bypass M's shield put them on quite an adventure, starting with interviewing two people known to have got their hands on one, one of them being Sinon, and ending with them entering a fight with a giant robot in a dungeon, leading to them getting the PTRD.
  • Honor Before Reason: In the Test Play, when Pito shoots herself and uses up one of her lives for M's plan to take out ZEMAL, Eva orders Tanya to do the same less to assist her but more to make them even.
  • Hot-Blooded: As a whole, the team is very much this and relies on aggressive yet effective tactics.
    • This can be seen in the contrast between how they and MMTM decided to counter-act M's shield; Whereas David opted to get an under-barrel Grenade Launcher so he can hit him from above, SHINC simply opted to get a gun that hit hardernote , hence their acquirement of the PTRD.
    • In SJ3, they end up being the first ones to wipe out a team and score a second kill shortly after under the prompting of the rising water level.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Inverted. It's their real life gymnastics skills that help them perform well in the game, allowing for exceptional accuracy and coordinated movements.
  • Informed Attribute: Downplayed. They're all part of rhythmantic gymnastics team IRL, but aside from Eva's Unorthodox Reload where she catches Sophie's throw magazine right into her magwell, we hardly see anything relative to their actual gymnastics skills.
    • Fully Averted in SJ4, where they put on an impromptu ballet performance for LPFM's drone.
  • Innocently Insensitive:
    • IRL, It was their awe at Karen's height, with her not realizing they were envious, that prompted the self-conscious Karen to join the Squad Jam in a way to vent her frustrations.
    • Turns that their rivlary with LLLENN, which they themselves are very enthusiastic about, is unintentionally pressuring the latter and stressing her out, which causes her to have some kind of existential crisis in regards to playing GGO in Volume 6.
  • In-Series Nickname: Other teams call them the "Amazons".
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • Despite having a chance at a rematch with LLENN during the Test Play, they opt out of continuing when ZEMAL attack them, instead choosing to team up with LPFM to take them out. Afterwards, they opt out of it entirely due to risk of getting interrupted again, and out of curiosity of the NPC team.
    • In SJ4, they purposely avoid an encounter with MMTM by setting up a truck as bait since their ultimate goal is to fight LLENN, which they'd prefer to do at their best with all members and full ammo.
  • Kryptonite Factor: They procure a Degtyaryov anti-tank rifle, intended specifically to counter M's bulletproof shield. After three shots it punches clean through and leaves his shield as scrap metal, forcing M to flee.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When the group charges PM4 in SJ2, they are unfortunately unaware of the fact that Pito brought a Barret Anti-Material rifle with her and are basing M's range on his signature EBR. While they adjust well enough and make good distance, this unfortunately gets Anna killed.
  • Meaningful Name: Their team name is short for "Shintaisou Club", which literally translates to rhythmic gymnastics club. It also sounds like the English word "synch", as in "sychronization", which they lacked before they started using VR.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong: The entire team seems to take role-playing as Russians pretty seriously, what with their entire weapon loadout consisting of Russian firearms, with the team sidearm by SJ4 being the Arsenal Strike One, and even dropping a random "DA" during Squad Jam. One of their members is even Russian in real life.
  • Noodle Incident: They apparently got in touch with Sinon just before Squad Jam 2 who told them how they could get hold of an anti-tank rifle.
  • Not So Similar: Despite both wielding Dragunov Sniper Rifles, Tohma and Anna's sniping styles differ; while Tohma is an out and out Long-Range Fighter, Anna's specialty is in being able to rapidly change positions after firing from comparatively closer ranges, which she can do with her AGI build.
  • Not the Intended Use: GGO turned out to be the perfect VR game for them to train their coordination skills as a gymnastics team: all the VR games focused on actual sports they'd tried beforehand didn't really help.
  • Older Than They Look: Being short for their age (as typical of gymnasts) especially when standing next to Karen, they look like middle schoolers. They're actually high school juniors (16 to 17), only 2 or 3 years younger than Karen.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: They're one of the top teams in both Squad Jams, but both times they get outclassed by the main characters, even more so in the second Squad Jam where Pitohui and M thoroughly dominate them.
  • Robbing the Dead: In SJ3, they the Team RGB of the flares and flare guns they were given, and use them to draw more teams over so they can kill them. Eva later uses one to save LLENN from the rest of LPFM after she's outed as the true traitor.
  • Rivals Team Up:
    • In SJ2, upon learning of Pito's plans to kill herself and M IRL unless she's killed by LLENN in the Squad Jam, SHINC agrees to team up with her.
    • They end up doing this in the Test Play to deal with ZEMAL after they get the drop on them. They later do this with LPFM and the other remaining Squadrons in the Test Play to take on the NPC after they prove too much for them individually.
    • After being betrayed by Fire's faction and learning about the bet between him and LPFM in SJ4, the group agrees to work with LPFM to take out the alliance.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Pitohui initially mistakes them for male players while watching footage from the first Squad Jam.
  • Shoot the Dog: For the impromptu Sixth Ordeal, Boss and Tohma side with Pito in killing Suuzaburou to finish the quest, opposing Fuka, LLENN and Shirley in sparing him and resigning. Though, it's heavily Implied that they're mainly doing this due to their worship of Elsa Kanzaki, Pito's IRL identity.
  • The Squad:
    • Eva is The Leader, and generally serves as their Strategist.
    • Sophie is The Lancer, and originally started as one of The Big Guys with PKM until she took on the role of carrying the team's PTRD, at which point she was forced to be effectively unarmed and became something akin to The Engineer due to carrying their ultimate weapon. She later returns to her old role in the form of the Demolitions Expert with her new Grenade Launcher.
    • Tohma and Anna both serve as the team's sniper, though in different ways. Tohma is is your more traditional, long-range sniper, equipping her Dragunov with a scope that goes up to 9x and a bipod to steady her aim when lying down, as well as being the PTRD's designated user. Anna uses her high reflexes to utilize a more run-and-gun style of sniping, finding a position, taking a shot, and then changing positions before striking again.
    • Like Sophie, Rosa served as The Big Guy and keeps her role after the team gets the PTRD, wielding a PKM Machine Gun. She also serves as something of a Demolitions Expert with the six Plasma Grenades strapped to her belt.
    • Tanya is the fastest member of the team, having speed almost comparable to LLENN, and so is the Designated Point Man. Her Bizon P-19 is also equipped with a suppressor, giving her elements of The Sneaky Guy.
  • Starving Student: Very downplayed, but the real reason they use exclusively Russian firearms is because they're a bunch of high school students with meager allowances who are already struggling to pay the monthly subscription fee to play GGOnote , and the Russian guns are the cheapest live-ammo weapons available in the game. They also happen to be big fans of Elza Kanzaki just like Karen, but again, they don't have enough money to buy tickets to any of her concerts.
  • Sweet Tooth: They really loved hanging out with Karen and eating all the sweets the older girl offered them.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Downplayed. Their procurement of the "M-Gun" to use against his shield arguably served to make LPFM an even tougher opponent; after destroying the shield's joints with it and leaving it only as nigh-indestructible plates, Pito uses one of them, which was used to carry her into a cabin when she got shot by Shirley, in her fight against MMTM to block their bullets. This prompts her to have M modify the shield so that it can separated into separate plates in case any of them needed to do so again.
  • Worthy Opponent: They admire and look up to LLENN and have a begrudging respect for M. They note with the latter particularly that he's the only male player they seem to actually respect
  • Younger Than They Look: They appear as adult women in-game, but in reality they're actually high school girls. Due to both their appearance and professionalism, the male gamers of GGO believes that they're 30+ years old IRL.

Saki Nitobe / Eva / "Boss"

Saki Nitobe / Eva

Voiced by: Ayaka Asai (Japanese), Cindy Robinson (English)
The team leader of both Team SHINC and their real life rhythmic gymnastics class. She uses a VSS Vintorez as her primary weapon.
  • Ammunition Backpack: As opposed to a sling, Eva carries her VSS Vintorez in a backpack so that it doesn't affect her running in combat.
  • Animal Motif: She's frequently called "Gorilla Woman".
  • Apologetic Attacker: In SJ2, she apologizes to one of her victims after revealing how she stole on her team member's comms and used to listen to their strategies.
  • Badass Boast: When the members of the newly founded Team BTRY are introducing themselves to their new teammates, she decides to flatter herself by assuming she needs no introduction.
  • Bear Hug: Gives a congratulatory one to LLENN when she beats Pito and wins SJ3, which LLENN worries will cause her HP to drop.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • In SJ3, she saves LLENN after she’s outed as the true traitor of LPFM and is about to ganged up on by Pito, Fuka and M by firing a flare and blinding the three of them.
    • In SJ5, she shows up just in time to save Vivi from potentially suffering enough fall damage to kill her after LLENN shoots off the bars of the fence she was impaled on, catching her before she hits the ground.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: In SJ4, she saves LLENN from one of WEEI's members in this manner, shooting the bat he was using mid-swing and knocking it out of his grasp.
  • Brawn Hilda: As Eva, she's a very large, mannish-looking woman, even being nicknamed Gorilla Lady. In real life she's a petite high school girl.
  • Challenge Seeker: Something very prevalent with Eva, and is part of motivates her passionate Rivalry with LLENN. Even the Test Play, where she has a chance to get a rematch with LLENN, her curiosity over the allegedly powerful NPC team prompts her to opt out in favour of challenging him.
  • Close Call Hair Cut: When evading minigun fire from Fire's group in SJ4, both ends of her signature braids get shot, causing it to come loose and fall down to her back, causing her to resemble a Rōnin. Sophie rebraids it shortly after.
  • Cold Sniper: Eva mains with the VSS Vintorez select-fire sniper rifle.
  • Competition Freak: Saki has been doing competitive gymnastics since she was young, and it's given her this mindset, if her dedication to her rivalry with LLENN and some other Squad Jam participants, which at times veers towards Skewed Priorities, is anything to go by. It's to the point that she's unable to comprehend players (or teams in this case) doing something like using a grenade to perform an agreed Mutual Kill so they can tie, like what Fire plans to do with the Squadrons he hire if he beats LLENN.
  • David Versus Goliath: Eva is a massive woman mountain, and in the first Squad Jam she's the final opponent for LLENN, who is a Pint-Sized Powerhouse.
  • Enemy Mine: In SJ5, she and David end up bumping into each other in the mist while Eva is laying low at a mansion and he happens to bump off a guy she wasn't in a good position to take out. Despite being tempted to take out the other, they decide to work together until they can regroup with their own teams, which inadvertently leads to them pulling another one of these with LLENN and Vivi when one of DOOM's explosion send them to the mansion.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: In the mall battle in SJ4, she complains about how WEEI are packing the perfect for the pistol only zone... only to realize that they specifically chose pistols with the pistol only zones in mind, and that their attempt to enter the pistol-only zone to utilize Pito and LLENN's strengths may have played into Pito's attempts to make the Squad Jam more challenging and fun.
  • Eye Scream: She takes a shot to the eye in Squad Jam 2. Due to her high stats, it doesn't kill her until the sniper shoots her again and puts her down for real.
  • Foil: Saki has the opposite scenario to Karen. Saki is a short, cute girl in real life who wishes she was taller and ended up making herself a tall avatar in GGO.
  • Friendly Enemies:
    • She and LLENN become this, especially after realizing they knew each other in real life. They're on such good terms that Eva is more than willing to set aside her match with LLENN and help her rival when she's in a predicament.
    • Seems to have this relationship with David, The Leader of MMTM. Despite being on rival teams, the two can interact amicably enough and before SJ3 even make a silent ceasefire agreement so they can both have a shot at LPFM. When both end up on Team BTRY and David decides to kill Pitohui to avenge Ervin, she states that while she won’t help him due to her desire to fight LLENN taking precedence, she won’t shoot him in the back out of understanding of his reasons.
  • Graceful Loser: Holds nothing against Karen in real life for beating her in Squad Jam, even shaking her hand and sincerely congratulating her. The two vow to fight in GGO again.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempts this in SJ1 by ordering Sophie to fire at LLENN despite the risk of hitting her, only to be foiled by M shooting Sophie.
  • Hidden Depths: When she and LLENN team up, she displays a surprising amount of knowledge of the physical forces causing the There Is Still Time to sink, stating it's because she once saw Titanic (1997) And later in SJ4, she actually reenacts the "I'm flying Jack" scene with the help of Rosa when SHINC, LPFM and T-S are riding a locomotive.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Her and Tanya's decision to not rely on slings for their guns due to being Close Range Combatants comes back to bite her when M shoots Rosa's plasma grenade and blows her up, causing Eva to lose grip on her Vintorez and leave her with only her pistol.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills:
    • Or in this case Catching skills. Eva manages to catch a thrown magazine into her gun, with the momentum alone sliding it in and reloading it.
    • In SJ3, she manages to shoot Fuka and score a headshot in mid-air before falling to her death, something Fuka noted should have been impossible.
    • SJ4, She manages to shoot a bat out of the hand of WEEI's grenadier mid-swing as he's about to kill LLENN with it.
  • In-Series Nickname: All her teammates call her "Boss", and even LLENN addresses her as that by Squad Jam 2.
  • Internet Jerk: Compared to how Saki is IRL, Eva is a lot more crass and aggressive. This gets Lampshaded in SJ2 after she crudely insults a team that ran away from them, but gets told by her team that if she keeps it up she might let slip something like that IRL.
  • In the Back: Stabbed in the back and killed by Shirley and her Ken-nata in the "Sixth Ordeal" of the Five Ordeals quest, being too focused on LLENN to notice the huntress sneaking up on her.
  • The Leader: She's the Boss of Team SHINC, and is a Headstrong type with hints of Mastermind.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Eva is a tough player who can survive at least one headshot from M's EBR, is surprisingly fast for her size, and her weapon is a Sniper Rifle, which naturally have high-damage outputs, that she can fire in Full-Auto.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Much like LLENN, she at times can't help behaving as her in-game avatar would suggest, resorting to cursing enemy players before her teammates remind her such behaviour could influence how she acts in real life.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: She's one of the only members of SHINC to successfully get past the Fifth Ordeal in Volume 10, the other being Tohma.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has one when she realizes that LLENN used P-Chan the first as a shield.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: The biggest Myth Arc of this entire series is Eva & LLENN trying to have a rematch after Squad Jam 1, but somehow other events keep getting in the way. As of Squad Jam 4, they still have not been able to have a proper one-on-one battle again. Even when she makes a deal with Fire to ensure that both her team and LLENN's will get to fight one-on-one with no interruptions, they ultimately get betrayed. Later on however, they're able to finally settle things through a Quick Draw duel, that LLENN wins.
  • Out of Focus: Due to her Vintorez's low effective range for a Sniper Rifle, she doesn't play much of a role duirng Team BTRY's defence of the There Is Still Team from the other teams, largely staying behind cover while observing her team.
  • Personality Powers: Inverted weapon example. Her signature VSS Vintorez is a sniper rifle for ranges up to 400m and has an integrated suppressor, which would make it perfect for stealth-based builds. However, while Boss is a skilled sniper, she's a Hot-Blooded fighter who often has her team perform full-on assault charges on the enemy instead of anything underhanded or sneaky, charges she herself often takes part in.
  • Pistol-Whipping: Resorts to this again LLENN in SJ1 to knock her knife out of her hand. Unfortunately, LLENN lets go of the knife just as she hit her knife, allowing her to grab and slit Eva's throat.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: After hearing of the special event in Volume 6, she immediately messages LLENN to say, "You. Better. Be. Going!!"
  • The Rival: LLENN's main rival in Squad Jam 1, considering each other Worthy Opponents and get along well inbetween tournaments.
  • Rivals Team Up: She teams up with LLENN in the final battle of SJ3 to take down LPFM, after it’s revealed LLENN’s the true traitor instead Pitohui.
  • Robbing the Dead: In one of SHINC's first battles in SJ2, she stole the comm from their first member and used it to learn the remaining member's strategies just to see if it was possible. She's proven right, but it seems to leave a bad taste in her mouth.
  • Scary Black Man: Gender inverted. Eva's avatar is that of a black woman with a towering stature, large build, and intimidating facial expressions, all of which complement her bossy and tough attitude. Some characters even nickname her Gorilla Lady because of her hulking appearance.
  • Skewed Priorities: When the 4th Squad Jam is announced, she's more concerned about that and fighting LLENN again than she is about the fact that the gymnastics team, which she's the captain of, hasn't gotten any new members.
  • Super-Reflexes: Being an IRL gymnist, Eva has naturally impressive reflexes. It's for this during their Quick Draw duel in SJ4 that LLENN decides to catch her off guard by jumping up and dodging her bullet in mid-air, as she would have reacted accordingly to anything else.
  • Suicide Attack: Subverted. In the Second Ordeal of the Five Ordeals Quest, she eventually devolves into just running up to the enemies and detonating her collection of Plasma Grenades to catch as many enemies in the blast as possible, taking advantage of the Complete Immortality the group received as part of the Ordeal to keep doing this non-stop.
  • Taking You with Me: In SJ3 in her brief fight against Fuka. Knowing that the Plasma Grenade she fired would kill her anyway, she instead opts to jump to her death while firing two pistols at Fuka, hitting her in the head and killing her.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Tanya, after calling a truce with LLENN, calls Eva to warn her of oncoming enemies. Eva, who's staring down a vehicle mounted minigun aimed right at her, responds with a simple "Yeah... I know...".
  • Troll: When she sees a member of RGB, who SHINC killed in the previous Squad Jam, sending her a Death Glare, she responds with a grin and a cutesy “Hiya! Nice to see you well!”
  • True Companions: When she and LLENN are both revealed to be on Team BTRY, she further puts off their rematch to help her against LPFM, and tells her she doesn't have to apologize for it being further put off since "they're teammates".
  • What You Are in the Dark: While trying to escape from the False Lancers with LPFM and her team, she briefly considers leaving LPFM behind on account of M forcing SHINC to keep pace with them. She doesn't go through with it though, especially after Pito saves her life shortly after the thought comes to her.
  • Worthy Opponent: Comes to see LLENN as this, with Eva being the final opponent LLENN faces. After the first Squad Jam, Saki tries hard to convince Karen to partake in the second Squad Jam, itching to fight against LLENN again.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: Eva usually calls LLENN by her player name in-game, but when she asks about Pito's self-imposed "death game," Eva switches to "Karen-san."

    Kana Fujisawa / Sophie

Kana Fujisawa / Sophie

Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

One of Team SHINC's two machine gunners, who uses a PKM GPMG.

  • BFG: Being one of SHINC's two machine gunners who wields a PKM, this is a given. Though, she is forced to give it up to become the PTRD's Carrier.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Before The Alliance's M134 can shoot and kill Eva, Sophie uses all her strength to pick up a bit of concrete onto her back and hold it up to block the minigun fire, allowing Eva to escape alive while she remains behind to keep the wall up.
  • Boom, Headshot!: She gets abruptly killed in SJ5 when she spawns on top of Eva after the rest of SHINC reach the tower, and is unable to react to take cover from Lax's sniper fire.
  • Grenade Launcher: After SJ4 and before the "Five Ordeals" quest, she managed to get her hands on a GM-64 Pump-Action Grenade Launcher. While lacking the Dakka of Fuka's Dual Milkors, it helps her in truly ascending from the Non-Action Guy status she had since SJ2. Plus, as noted by Pito, it's a good launcher for enclosed spaces in comparison to the Milkors.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Volunteers herself to be deliberately team-killed so that her corpse could become an Immortal Object and serve as an indestructible pedestal for her PTRD anti-tank rifle.
    • Does this again in SJ3, using the PTRD to create holes in the "There Is Still Time" for her teammates to enter through, leaving herself to drown in the approaching tide.
    • To allow her friends to escape and hinder the minigun Humvee, she's uses a bunch of Grand Grenades thrown like an Olympic hammer to get close enough to throw an M67 fragment grenade to destroy the front tires and prevent them from pursuing.
  • Identical Stranger: Kana's real life appearance actually bears quite a bit of resemblance to LLENN's in-game avatar. Though this has never been brought up.
  • Mighty Glacier: Is this by virtue of being one of the team's Machine Gunners. And when she ends up becoming the PTRD's carrier, she ends up slower but has a BFG she can use if push comes to shove, albeit not as effectively as Tohma, it's official user.
  • Non-Action Guy: Due to having the role the carrying the team's PTRD, Sophie is forced to forgo her machine gun and go in effectively unarmed. She starts to Downplay this in SJ4, where the pistol-only zones rule prompts her, along with the rest of SHINC, to each get an Arsenal Strike One. She's back to Averting this by the time of Five Ordeals, having gotten her hands on a Grenade Launcher for her personal use, reclaiming her place as one of SHINC's Big Girls, while SJ5 sees her take advantage of the Alternative Equipment rule to go back to her PKM.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Kana's real life appearance really stands out as she's drawn with different eyes to all her friends, having almost rectangular eyes and very small pupils, while all of her friends have stereotypical big anime eyes.
  • Not the Intended Use: How Sophie, with Tohma serving as her partner, utilise the Alternative Gear rule in SJ5. Going back to her old PKM, she has the PTRD-41 as her second inventory carried by Tohma, so that she can take it out for Tohma to use, while Tohma's second inventory is Sophie's GM-94 Grenade Launcher for Tohma to take out, only to then give back to Sophie. Sophie is unfortunately killed before they can do this.
  • Number Two: She is second-in-command after Eva.
  • Out of the Frying Pan: After she, Rosa and Tohma manage to survive and reach the castle's teleport point to reunite with the rest of SHINC and LPFM, Sophie is immediately shot in the head by Lax after she spawns and lands on top of the Eva, having not been warned to take cover in time.
  • Stout Strength: She invokes this with her STR heavy build and the wide girth of her avatar.
  • Taking the Bullet: When Eva is readying the PTRD against Pito and M in SJ4, Sophie does a diving save when Pito tries shooting back.
  • Walking Armoury: Has become one by the time of Five Ordeals. While it comes at the expense of her Machine Gun, she's carrying a Arsenal Strike One for close-quarters combat, she's managed to get her hands on GM-94 Pump-Action Grenade Launcher, and stashed in her inventory is a PTRD-41 Anti-Tank Rifle that she can whip either for her team's or her own personal use.

    Milana Sidorova / Tohma

Milana Sidorova / Tohma

Voiced by: Chitose Morinaga (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English)

The primary sniper of Team SHINC. She uses a SVD Dragunov with wooden furniture.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Subverted. Her avatar is described as tall and slender and she has long black hair, but she's just as Hot-Blooded as the rest of SHINC.
  • Badass Driver: Her father taught her how to drive a stick-shift vehicle in Russia in real life. She was able to transfer these skills over to GGO and be the driver for Team SHINC. She also uses her driving experience for when the team sets up an airstairs truck as bait/a trap for MMTM.
  • BFG: While she mains with a Dragunov SVU Sniper Rifle and the official owner of the gun itself is Sophie, she's the one who uses the PTRD-41 Anti-Tank Rifle SHINC procured for use against M and his shield.
  • Big Damn Heroes: During the Fourth Ordeal of the Five Ordeals Quest, she prevents Shirley's latest attempt at killing Pito by threatening to shoot her with the PTRD, prompting her to call it quits.
  • Calling Your Attacks: "Fuzoku Girls' High School Rhythmic Gymnastics Club Special, the anti-M ultimate weapon, or M-gun for short!"
  • Foreign Exchange Student: Her parents are Russian traders and she often divided her time between Tokyo and Moscow until she became a teenager and began to regularly attend school in Japan.
  • Friendly Sniper: One of SHINC's Snipers, and she generally comes off as just as Hot-Blooded as some of the other members, as well as on the cheerful side.
  • Gun Accessories: In contrast to Anna, who's Dragunov possesses the basic 4x magnification scope, Tohma has replaced the one on hers with a bulkier one that can go from 3x to 9x, and it also has a bipod to steady her aim when laying down to shoot. This establishes her as SHINC's out-and-out Long Range Combatant in contrast to Anna's more hit and run style of sniping.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Inverted. Tohma is capable of driving stick-shift vehicles in-game, which was taught to her by her car enthusiast father, which makes her SHINC's designated driver.
  • It Has Been an Honour: After she wins her second Sniper Duel with M in SJ2 with the help of the PTRD and Sophie's immortal object corpse, she tearfully thanks Sophie for her Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Occidental Otaku: Has some shades of this, which is why she's named and modelled her avatar to look like a Japanese person.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: She's one of the only members of SHINC to successfully get past the Fifth Ordeal in Volume 10, the other being Eva.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has one when he witnesses LLENN survive Eva shooting her SJ1, not seeing P-Chan sacrifice herself and immediately wondering if LLENN's a zombie.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: Blue-eyed, blonde-haired, and Russian.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: Ends up borrowing Pito's M870 Breacher for the "Sixth Ordeal" in Volume 10, as her Dragunov wouldn't be as useful indoors.
  • Slashed Throat: Shot Throat, more accurately. In SJ4, she gets killed when one of ZEMAL's bullets hits her in the throat as the locomotive is driving past.
  • Sniper Duel: Ends up in a few.
    • In Squad Jam, she enters an almost wild western style one in the climax after LLENN kills Eva after he draws her attention. They both fire and hit each, but M wins by virtue of scoring a headshot and placing his backpack carrying his shield on the front, preventing the bullet from damaging him.
    • The two have a rematch in SJ2 during SHINC's charge on PM4, only this time she comes equipped with her own invincible shield, Sophie's corpse which is designated an Immortal Object, and a PTRD-41 Anti-Tank rifle. She wins this round.
    • In the Test Play, she enters a one-sided one against Rock after SHINC's infantry is wiped out by the NPCs, with both her and Anna getting killed. She's able to get revenge however by sniping him while he's distracted dealing with their newfound alliance's centipedes, scoring a revenge win by taking out his Lynx rifle.
  • Taking the Bullet: Does this for Eva in the "Sixth Ordeal" after LLENN shoots at her, getting a bullet to the head for her troubles.

  • You Got Guts: Says this to M after he challenges her to a Sniper Duel after Eva gets killed.

    Moe Annaka / Anna

Moe Annaka / Anna

Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English)

The secondary sniper of Team SHINC. She uses a SVD Dragunov with black synthetic furniture.

  • Apologizes a Lot: Apparently does this a lot IRL, even apologizing for "putting on airs" due to her avatar looking like a Hollywood movie star.
  • Born Lucky: When told to choose a direction for LPFM and SHINC to take to escape the city in the first of the "Five Ordeals", Anna chooses a street with a blue sign since it was her lucky colour that day. This turned out to be the right call since there was an SUV shop in that direction that the group uses, after regrouping, to just drive their way through the monsters, finishing the ordeal with plenty of spare time.
  • Cool Shades: As Anna, she dons a pair of sunglasses, which hides her brilliant emerald green eyes.
  • Cold Sniper: One of the team's snipers, and in contrast to her Hot-Blooded teammates, comes off as being a bit on the calmer side and, at least with guys who try hitting on her, is more vitriolic.
  • Clothing Damage: In the Light Novel, she ended with a hole in her bulletproof vest and shirt from when M shot her. While she's able to tie it closed, it still gets some annoying attention.
  • Decoy Leader: In SJ5, she ends up serving as this for her team. Unfortunately for her, with the unique rule of SJ5 separating all the teams, this ends up serving as less of a tactical advantage and more of a hindrance, as it paints a massive target on her back and forces her, and anyone she's working with, to be on a constant move less she gets dogpiled. She angrily says it feels like she's being stalked when she allies with M.
  • Dude Magnet: With her avatar looking the way it does, she gets a lot of male attention.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: She gets blown in half by M's anti-materiel rifle in Squad Jam 2 when one of his team's hired mercs fools her with his Bullet Line and she dodges right into M's sights.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In SJ5, with the revelation that all surviving players need to reach the castle in the centre of the map less they fall with the collapsing map, Pito is quick to suggest that M and Anna, who suffered a lot of damage in their efforts to regroup with them, stay behind to provide supporting fire as the rest of the group make their way to castle. However, the sudden appearance and detonation of a member of DOOM, which creates a massive dust screen to prevent others from firing on them, removes the need to do this.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Inverted. Due to taking part in her parent's bouldering hobby, Anna is an efficient climber, which she uses in SJ3 to climb atop a pillar and score the first kill for her team and the entire tournament.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Seen in the bar watching the match after the above, drinking a beer.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: When she's hit by one of WNGL's snipers, she tells the others to go on ahead while she tries and hold them off, getting killed in the process.
  • Real Name as an Alias: It's implied that her username is derived from her last name Annaka.
  • Shrinking Violet: Her real-life self which heavily contrasted with the vulgar personality of her avatar.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: IRL, she has bluish purple hair and is easily the shyest in her group of friends, a stark contrast to her more confident in-game self.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: During the fight with LLENN in SJ1, she's killed by a Plasma Grenade LLENN throws at her.
  • Super-Reflexes: Despite her shy demeanour, she actually has the best reflexes on the team. It's because of this that, in contrast to Tohma, that her sniping relies more on rapid repositioning and shooting as opposed to full on long range combat, as shown by it's basic 4x scope.
  • Villain Song: Before going after LLENN, Anna starts singing a song about hunting a rabbit that the rest join in on in the anime, before Tohma interrupts upon thinking she got a lyric wrong.

    Risa Kusunoki / Tanya

Risa Kusunoki / Tanya

Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi (Japanese), Morgan Berry (English)

A white-haired member of Team SHINC. She uses a PP-19 Bizon 2.

  • Animal Motifs: She's often compared to a fox.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Is quick to apologise to Clarence when they meet and team up in SJ5, having accidentally shot her through the cheek when she surprised her.
  • Easily Forgiven: Evidently doesn't hold much of a grudge against M for killing her in SJ3, greeting him with a casual "Hiya" when SHINC and LPFM team up against up ZEMAL in the Test Play, to which he responds with a "Yo."
  • Fragile Speedster: Downplayed. She can match LLENN in terms of speed but she can take more hits than her before dying.
  • Go Out with a Smile:
    • She died with a smile of contentment on her face when Eva finds her body in the first Squad Jam. This is noticeably absent in the anime version.
    • In Squad Jam 2, she gets killed with a grin on her face. M even notices and comments on this.
    • She's smiling when she pushes LLENN out of the doorway and out of the way of David's hail of bullets in SJ5.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Does this twice during the Test Play.
    • When SHINC pulls an Enemy Mine with LPFM to deal with ZEMAL, she and Pitohui commit suicide and loses one of her three livesnote , to respawn behind ZEMAL and take them out from behind.
    • When she, LLENN and Kenta finally enter the castle, she finds Vodka and takes out his machine gun at the cost of her last life, removing much of the NPC team's firepower and forcing Vodka to resign.
    • In SJ5, when she and LLENN attempt to leave the tower to fight back against MMTM, Tanya is quick to push LLENN back inside just as she exits, ensuring she's the only one killed by David's hail of gunfire.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: In SJ3, her attempt to kill M is arguably what gets her eliminated from the tournament.
  • Human Shield: In SJ5, when a Wannabe Millionaire comes close to bypassing LFPM and SHINC's hail of fire and throws a Plasma Grenade into the tower, the grenade ends up hitting Tanya's corpse that was left in the doorway, stopping it in it's track and preventing it from doing more damage.
  • Improvised Weapon: In her attempt to kill M in SJ3, she uses the sling of her Bizon, for which she lost the magazine for, to try and strangle him to death. Unfortunately, the way she positioned herself to do this leads to her being Squashed Flat.
  • Last Stand: She attempts this after becoming the Sole Survivor of her team in SJ3, trying to kill M by choking him out.
  • Mirror Match: Her battle against LLENN in Squad Jam 1 has them very evenly matched. They are both high-AGI builds who use submachine guns as primary weapons. Throughout their fight, Tanya is matching LLENN's speed and accuracy.
  • More Dakka: Similarly to LLENN, she utilizes a SMG. Specifically, the Izhmash PP-19 Bizon-2, which features a helical feed magazine and is equipped with a Suppressor.
  • Morphic Resonance: She's the member of the team whose in-game avatar's face and hairstyle most closely resembles her real life self.
  • Multiple Gunshot Death:
  • The Navigator: It's not quite on M's level, but she states she's good with directions.
  • No Bikes in the Apocalypse: When LLENN and SHINC finally get a rematch in SJ4, she starts off pursuing LLENN on a bicycle, since she wouldn't be able to keep with her without making noise otherwise.
  • No Kill like Overkill: In SJ4, she's among the victims of ZEMAL's surprise attack on the locomotive, getting riddled with holes and being shot even after she dies.
  • Oh, Crap!: Suffers one when LLENN unexpectedly shows up in front of her in the first Squad Jam.
  • The Rival: While not prominent as her one with Eva, Tanya also appears to be this with LLENN, seeing as Tanya was the first member of SHINC LLENN killed and they both have similar stat builds. Even the long-awaited rematch with SHINC in SJ4 is kicked off by a one-on-one between the two of them, which is unfortunately interrupted.
  • Squashed Flat: While trying to strangle M to death in SJ3, he escapes this fate by slamming her, who's hanging onto his backpack, against the ceiling and crushing her to death.
  • Sole Survivor: Ends up being the last survivor of SHINC in SJ3, her teammates being killed Fuka’s accidental Plasma Grenade. She doesn't last long.
  • The Sneaky Guy: Tanya consistently has her PP-19 Bizon equipped with a silencer, giving her an edge in sneaking around and ambushing opponents, as shown when she and Pito take out ZEMAL during the test play, taking them out one by one with their suppressed weapons without them noticing.
  • Super-Reflexes: Being an athlete IRL, Tanya has good reflexes to go with her AGI build. In SJ4, despite falling for LLENN's trapnote  she's able to dodge in time upon realizing she'd been tricked, with only a cut on the side of her head.
  • Tomboy: Implied. She has short boyish hair both in-game and IRL and she refers to herself as "boku", a more masculine way of addressing yourself.

    Shiori Noguchi / Roza

Shiori Noguchi / Roza

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki (Japanese), Rebecca Davis (English)

The other one of Team SHINC's two machine gunners, who also uses a PKM GPMG.

  • '20s Bob Haircut: Her hair in real life is styled like this to help differentiate her from her friends.
  • BFG: Being a Heavy Support Member, she wields PKM Machine Gun as her main weapon.
  • Boom, Headshot!: She takes two from M's EBR before dying in SJ2.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In the Test Play and after, she often expresses envy of ZEMAL's back-pack belt feeders due to the increase in firepower in gives them, bemoaning how she can't afford them with her allowance.
  • Gun Nut: In the Test Play, it's revealed that she once gushed to Karen about the PKP Pecheneg, a more powerful version of her current machine gun that has an air cooled barrel with a steel jacket that allows it to fire for longer, doesn't need the barrel to be replaced for better accuracy, and an equipable scope for long-distance shooting, as well as just a higher fire rate and damage. Her knowledge on it honestly leaves Karen a little concerned.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: A consequence of her Taking You with Me in SJ4.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: LLENN's final, risky strategy in SJ5 requires Rosa to do this, firing at David so that he'd fire his RPG at her instead of the tower's foundation, sparing her and LLENN's teams from certain death.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Just as she's about to finish off LLENN, M pulls a Big Damn Heroes and shoots one of her Plasma Grenades, killing her and masking LLENN with the explosion so she can escape.
  • Mighty Glacier: Being one of the team's Machine Gunner's, she's this, having a decent HP pool and machine gun with a high fire rate, but said gun and the ammo for it weighs her down.
  • Taking You with Me: As she's getting assaulted by two members of Team SATOH in the climax of SJ4, she pulls the pin of one of her grenades and takes one of them down with her.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: She carries up to 6 Plasma Grenades on her person. This bites her in the ass when M shoots one, setting it off and killing her.
  • Xanatos Gambit: After hearing that Karen wants to be strong in real life, she proposes that by putting up a good fight against her in their next match, Team SHINC will help Karen realize her strength no matter who wins or loses.
  • Victory Is Boring: Downplayed. She's all for winning, but she disappointment that after SHINC beat LLENN in SJ1 that the fun will be over.
  • Wrecked Weapon: In SJ4 when trying to return fire at ZEMAL, the ammo box of her PKM gets destroyed and she's forced to take cover.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: In sheer contrast to her avatar, who's stated to look like a badass, middle-aged woman, Shiori is a cute young girl that Karen describes as resembling a Japanese doll with a Japanese bob-cut.
