A group faction of tribalists players who Liz, Yui and Silica encounter.were transferred from the VR game, Apocalyptic Date, where everyone plays as anthromophorbic animals. Among the transferred games, they're tied with Asuka Empire as the ones to have made the most progress in exploring Unital Ring.

* TheBeastmaster: As revealed when ten of them move to Kirito Town and witness Kuro and Misha living there, they seem to display greater respect to people who can tame dangerous monsters as opposed to hunt and kill them. This causes them to highly revere Silica.

PsychologicalProjection: Being among the grass Liz and Silica were using to make rope is something they eat. Liz and Silica compare the stew they two player groups that have made with it with ''shirodatsu'' / ''niimoji''[[note]] dried and boiled taro stalk [[/note]].
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: They speak
the most progress in a strange language described to sound warped and distorted, as if subject to several layers of noise filtering. Yui is able to realize that exploring Unital Ring, it's multi-layered Japanese based on evident that they've adopted a competitive streak, best shown in the Seed Nexus, and is [[TranslatorBuddy able fact that they sent ''200 players'' as an advance force when they accessed the next area, whereas Kirito's group sent only about 14. As such, while they did require Yui's abilities as a translator to decipher it to communicate negotiate with them.]]
the Dark Elves for their friends' release and potentially their help in progressing, they assumed that the ALO players would refuse them since their situation would put them at an advantage, hence their decision to kidnap her instead. This leaves them stunned when Yui responds to Otto's rhetorical question of if they really would have helped if they simply asked with a simple "of course."
* {{Stripperific}}: Noted DidntThinkThisThrough: After their friends are kidnapped by Dark Elf [=NPCs=] who they can't properly negotiate with due to not cover up much skin, to understanding their language, they learn of Kirito's group getting two [=NPC=] groups on their side with the point help of Yui. However, instead of trying negotiate with them for their help, they instead opt to just kidnap Yui under the assumption that Silica notes the [=ALO=] group would be unwilling to help due to [[PsychologicalProjection being just as competitive as them]], they instead decide to just kidnap Yui and force her to do it. If the nature of their attackers didn't catch Kirito and Asuna's interest, they would have thrown away their one chance of saving their friends out of blind mistrust.
* SympathyForTheDevil: {{Downplayed}} on two counts, one being
that even if they're not particularly evil. Upon hearing about how three of their number were captured trying to scout out the grace periods before she Dark Elves, Kirito expresses some sympathy since with dying merely meaning losing some experience and Liz loot, being imprisoned in-game is quite possibly the worst thing that can get new gear happen to an MMO player. Not that it means that they're EasilyForgiven for attempting to kidnap Yui, which is where the other count comes in.
* UngratefulBastard: {{Downplayed}}. When their kidnapping attempt is foiled
and they're forced to go around negotiate, the most they offer in exchange for Yui's services is a non-aggression pact, which is all but pointless since the AD and ALO's groups' respective routes are miles apart, and a not-so-tangible offer for a physical reward. Kirito himself recognises that this is a bum deal, with the only thing making him considering it being the Lysula Dark Elves their underwear, they probably wouldn't stand out too much as a result.

Additionally, using it in the midst of battle has it's own risks since, as her plan required that she use it on both her forced and genuinely loyal followers, doing so can leave her defenceless against anyone who can either resist the effects or isn't afflicted at all. Kirito was in fact banking on this when he was trying to keep his affliction a secret.

** When one of her new followers sardonically suggests that she just use the Noose of the Accursed on Kirito's group, she states that it'd impractical to attempt. [[spoiler: Come the actual battle, she devised a strategy that allows her to use the Noose in an attempt to forcibly recruit them as well.]]

As a result, Kirito realizes that [[spoiler: this isn't the real Mutasina, but a BodyDouble.]]

** She also argues that her reason for her use of "Noose of the Accursed" was because she realized that even if an alliance was properly, it'd eventually fall apart as the loss of other threats would prompt the other groups to split up and attack the other. While she's ''definitely'' taking it a step too far, her logic is eerily similar to Kirito's speculations about Bolan's group, who suspected that they would have even betrayed each other eventually to reach the "land revealed by heavenly light".

* YourMindMakesItReal: Due to the numerous safety measures on the [=AmuSphere=], to the point that it can potentially log you out when you simply need to use the bathroom, Mutasina's "Noose of the Accursed" isn't actually capable of causing real choking, meaning she can't kill anyone with it no matter how long she leaves it active. However, this doesn't change how the sensation, as Kirito can attest to, is ''very'' realistic, to the point that even knowing the choking is fake won't change the fact that you could very well think you'd die and want to log out, meaning that you can't just simply try to ignore it as Klein tries suggesting.

In fact, during the fight to defend Kirito town from Bolan's associates, he's in charged with killing anyone who's ends up inside when knocked off the wall, preventing anyone from opening the door to let their allies in.
* MixAndMatchCritters: "Critter" undersells it in some respects, but it has the head and torso of a platypus and the teeth, hind-legs and tail of a dinosaur.
* OxygenMeter: {{Inverted}} example. Aga will apparently lose HP if he doesn't enter a body of water every so often.
* SilentSnarker: Less "silent" and more "unintelligible", on account of being an animal. After Kirito dramatically announces the beginning of the iron age upon making his first ingot, Aga responds by sniffing it and giving a quack that Kirito can't help but interpret as mocking.
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Kuro]]
!! Kuro
A Lapispine Dark Panther that was tamed by Kirito during the search for Sinon.
----
* HeelFaceTurn: Very {{Downplayed}}. It does start out hostile, being a wild animal that was about Kirito's group before being fed meat, but is quick to be friendly to them once tamed, allowing them to use his fur for warmth.
* HorseOfADifferentColor: Large and strong enough for Kirito to ride and get to places faster than he would on foot.
* PantheraAwesome: A large panther monster that are said to be dangerous predators by the Bashin Tribe.
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Misha]]
!! Misha

A Thornspike Cave Bear that Kirito, Asuna and Alice encountered while searching for materials to repair the log cabin, which they came into conflict with and killed. Respawning later, it's tamed by Silica after the group is forced to draw it out to deal with a group of invading players.
----
* BearsAreBadNews: When first encountered, it's a large threat to it's high level, the group effectively being BroughtDownToNormal, and [[TheAce Kirito]] accidentally deprieving himself of his equipment. Ultimately, they have the [[GuileHero be creative]] in order to defeat it.
* BearyFriendly: After Silica tames her though, it becomes a lot more relaxed and friendlier, and has no problem letting children ride on her back.
* FlechetteStorm: The "thornspike" in its name stems from it's ability to launch dozens of razor sharp quills at it's enemies.
* MightyGlacier: It's massive, hits hard, especially with it's FlechetteStorm, and it's tough enough to only lose 10% HP to Leafa's Lysavindr, noted by Kirito to be one of the greatest Ancient Class weapons in ALO that should deal great damage even in the hands of a level 1 player. However, it's not the fastest creature.
* SquashedFlat: How [[GuileHero Kirito]] beats it in their first encounter. With everyone holed up in the log cabin and the soon to be made Misha ready to smash the door down, Kirito decides to climb up to a beam above the door and have the girls trade all of the wood they collected to him, before dropping it all on the bear and crushing it under the weight.

[[folder: Patter]]
!! Patter

A race of rat people native to the natural border wall cave. Three of the youngest and supposedly bravest assist Sinon in making her way out before they come into conflict with the Goliath Rana. After it's defeat, twenty of them decide to join a expedition to go live in Kirito town.
----
* FarmBoy: It's evident that the Patter aren't exactly trained fighters, with their [[WeaponOfChoice Weapons of Choice]] consisting of farming tools like pitchforks and scythes. That's not to say they aren't eager to fight, wanting to join despite Kirito's suggestion that they hide, to which he can only tell them to stick together.
* TooManyBabies: The very day after they repelled Schulz's attempted invasion and fought them off, Kirito logs into Unital Ring to discover that not only have their twenty Patter settlers had children, but they've grown to a size comparable to grade schoolers, and can already speak.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Hyme / Trish Mills]]
!! Hyme / Trish Mills

Agil's wife, and a player of the VRMMO "Insectsite", who got transferred into Unital Ring alongside some party members in her mantis avatar.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Refers to Agil/Andrew as "Andy".
* InterspeciesRomance: PlayedWith. This doesn't apply IRL, where they're both human, but in Unital Ring, Agil is a Gnome-turned-human while Hyme is essentially a human-sized mantis, which can give off this impression.
* SlayingMantis: Her Insectsite Avatar is a praying mantis, which causes Kirito's group to mistake, as well as her party members who also came in their bug avatars, to mistake them for hostile mobs and nearly attack them before Agil clears things up.
----
[[/folder]]

! Other Players / Communities
!! Bolan's Party
[[folder: General]]

A group of players seeking food and shelter that Kirito and others encounter early in Unital Ring, who then end up coming into conflict with them.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: Based on the timer in the menu's and the words of the mysterious voice at the end of the grace period, they quickly concluded that Unital Ring was some kind of competition with a prize waiting at the end for the winner. This leads to them trying to kill Kirito's party when they learn who he is, figuring out that taking out one of ALO's top players before he can get proper gear would give them a huge advantage. Kirito even speculates that they would have eventually betrayed each other if it meant being the last one standing and achieving victory, assuming they really believed the mysterious voice from the end of the grace period.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: They start off friendly enough, the worst they do being asking for food and shelter in exchange for their map data, but they quickly reveal themselves as ruthlessly ambitious when they try to kill Kirito for an advantage at winning Unital Ring.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Even after the death of Bolan, the remaining members continue to fight to the last man. Though Kirito speculates that it was less out of VillainousValor, but more due to their belief in ''Unital Ring'' being a Last Man Standing scenario, meaning that their leader dying wouldn't factor in much since they're [[ItsAllAboutMe technically only out for themselves.]]
* FromNobodyToNightmare: {{Downplayed}}. To quote Bolan, they were "nobodies" in ALO, but when Unital Ring began, they found themselves having a major advantage since their gear, unlike more powerful, legendary gear, ended up retaining their lightness while keeping their stats, which were more powerful than things such as the crude stone knives Kirito's group made, while leaving players with more powerful weapons that retained their high equip requirements at a disadvantage. This, along with paranoia and ambition, leads to them being the {{Starter Villain}}s of ''Unital Ring'' with their attempt to kill Kirito to secure an advantage down the line.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Not only is their attempt at betrayal foiled and they're all killed, but their gear that was dropped upon death is then smelted down to help in the log cabin repairs, meaning they more than likely won't be getting it back after Unital Ring ends.
* LightningBruiser: Due to being able to keep their starter gear after the transfer, they're this compared to the under-equipped Kirito, Asuna, Alice and Leafa. Fortunately enough, [[ShedArmorGainSpeed Kirito's complete lack of armour gives him enough of a edge in speed to avoid their attacks.]]
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Upon learning of Kirito's status as a high-level player, they figure that they should kill him before he gets his hands on more powerful gear, since he could give them competition down the line.
* NormalFishInATinyPond: Back in ALO, they were a relatively new party lacking in much renown. When ''Unital Ring'' began however, their relatively low-level gear effectively became the most powerful equipment around thanks to retaining their stats while not being powerful enough to require strict equip burdens, making them effective against higher level players who lost their gear and were forced to make weaker armour and weapons or just lacked any.
* TheParanoiac: They could honestly care less about Kirito's claims that he only cares about repairing his cabin, reasoning that he's very likely to try and win Unital Ring once he's done repairing it.
* StarterVillain: They're the first Players Kirito and the others come to blows with in ''Unital Ring''.
* UngratefulBastard: When they first encounter Kirito and the girls, they agree to give them some food and a place to spend the night in exchange for information. Upon realizing who Kirito is however, they are quick to turn on their hosts so they can kill Kirito while he's still lacking powerful gear, fearing that he could become competition down the line.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Bolan]]
!! Bolan

TheLeader of the group, who wields a two-handed sword.
----
* {{BFS}}: He wields a two-handed sword.
* TheLeader: He's the leader of his party, and Kirito notes from his immediate orders that he appears natural for the role.
* RevengeMyopia: He's quite clearly enraged at Kirito for killing Mocri, ordering everyone to at least try and take him out to avenge him. This ignores that the fact that his party took advantage of Kirito's group's hospitality to try and kill them, with Mocri being the one to instigate the conflict.
* NeverMyFault: When Kirito and the others call him and his group for trying to kill them when they had no intention of attacking them, even [[UngratefulBastard helping them by offering them food and lodging]], he dismissively tries to shift the blame to Kirito for his [[TheAce renown and skill as a player]], which he thinks will make him a threat later on.
* WreckedWeapon: He tries using his Two-Handed Sword to block Kirito's Vorpal Strike, only for the Sword Skill to shatter it and stab him in the chest.
----
[[/folder]]
[[folder: Mocri]]
!! Mocri

A knife-wielder in the party, who's the first to realize who Kirito is.
----
* TheApprentice: {{Implied}}. When Kirito commends his knifework, he mentions a "Sensei" who told him;
--> "Don't only look at one part of the opponent; grasp the whole. Then you'll know what they're aiming for- and what they don't like, you see."
* BloodKnight: When Kirito manages to land a blow on him while fighting him and Bolan, he responds by smirking and admiring his skill, prompting Bolan to tell him to focus.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's a backstabbing opportunist who appears accustomed to PlayerKilling, but even he's surprised when Kirito mistakes him for another Laughing Coffin member with a grudge.
* {{Jerkass}}: Mocri in particular stands out for being the one to instigate the conflict by stabbing Kirito and convincing Bolan to attack him and his friends.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Kirito pays him back for stabbing him in the stomach by killing him with the Sword Skill, Savage Fulcrum, which begins with him stabbing him.
* KnifeNut: His WeaponOfChoice is a knife, which he uses to sneakily stab Kirito in the gut and wields with a good deal of skill when he and Bolan tag team him.
* SayingTooMuch: When Kirito compliments his dagger skills, he mentions a "Sensei" who told him gave him pointers in fighting. When Kirito expresses curiosity at this, Bolan tells him to shut it, implying this "Sensei" wishes to remain anonymous as much as possible.
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Recognizing Kirito from the ALO Duelling tournament back in February[[note]] the same one he lost to Yuuki in[[/note]], he's quick to sneakily stab him in the gut and convince his party to kill him and his friends to increase their odds of winning Unital Ring. However, this only serves to get his party killed when their targets put up a fight long enough for the Bashin Tribe, along with Silica, Lisbeth and Yui, to pull a BigDamnHeroes and give Kirito new gear and fight alongside them, quickly turning the tables and getting them all killed.
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Schulz]]

An associate of Bolan's group, who organises a raid group to attack the group's budding town while Kirito and some others were looking to rendezvous with Sinon.
----
* BladeOnAStick: Wields a fauchard, a hooked polearm.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Him setting fire to the surrounding forest did help his group get an edge, but Kirito uses it to his side's advantage by throwing all the meat he and the others collected during their excursion into the fire, using the smell to draw out the Thornspike Cave Bear. This forces him to have his group focus on it and leaving open to attack from Kirito's group.
* {{Hypocrite}}: It's not touched upon, but Kirito can't help but be annoyed by Schulz's groups use of the term "enemy attack" in response to their BigDamnHeroes moment considering the whole fight's happening because he attacked their budding village. Additionally, he later claims that Kirito attacking them in response to their attempted invasion is "poor form" with absolutely no hint of irony.
* KilledMidSentence: "Kirito... You're... Really..."
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Along with his spear, he carried a shield.
* PlayingWithFire: Kirito notices that he possesses reddish hair and tanned skin, suggesting that he was a Salamander player before the merge.
* TheStrategist: He led his raid group with precise tactics and careful planning, with him having set the forest surrounding the log cabin on fire to prevent guerrilla tactics being used against them. The moment he dies, his group throws strategy and tactics out the window and opt for an all-out brawl, which they lose.

!! Virtual Study Society
[[folder: Mutasina]]
!! Mutasina

A female player in charge of the Virtual Study Society. Initially posing as an advocate for a peaceful alliance of players, she's quick to show her true colours by inflicting everyone who came with a unique status ailment that forces them to obey her whims.
----
* AchievementInIgnorance: She's made plans to wipe out Kirito's group from Unital Ring to up up her chances of victory, not realizing that she inflicted that very group's leader with her Noose of the Accursed due to him spying on the meeting.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Like Bolan's group, her motive appears to be winning ''Unital Ring'' and reaching the "land revealed by heavenly light", which is what prompts her afflicting a bunch of players with Noose of the Accursed to get an army that can't possibly betray her and wanting to wipe out Kirito's settlement despite having no personal conflict with them.
* AwesomeButImpractical: When one of her [[ForcedIntoEvil new subordinates]] questions why she doesn't just inflict Kirito's group with Noose of the Accursed and is instead opting towards wiping them out, she claims that it's because it takes too long to cast and the magic circle for it is easy to notice, and she was only able to get away with it that time since she tricked them into thinking it'd provide a buff.
* BadBoss: {{Implied}}. It's stated that in order to afflict the other gathered players with Noose of the Accursed, those in her group had to be among the crowd to avert suspicion and she had no issue using it to illustrate what it could do to her new forced minions with seemingly no care for her more willing ones.
* BigBad: She's looking to be this on the Unital Ring side of things, [[ForcedIntoEvil forcing otherwise innocent players into serving her with her Noose of the Accursed spell]], [[AmbitionIsEvil doing so to up her group's chances of reaching "the land revealed by heavenly light"]], and wanting to wipe out Kirito's group with her new army to up her chances.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: During the meeting between the potential alliance, she acts peppy and friendly to the gathered players, [[ThereAreNoGirlsOnTheInternet which is no doubt helped by her]] [[BeautyEqualsGoodness being an attractive girl]]. After she casts Noose of the Accursed, she's quick to drop this in favour of being a CardCarryingVillain who scoffs at the notion of things like friendship and trust truly existing in the Virtual World, citing SAO as an example to Kirito's ire, and advocating hatred, betrayal, deceit and despair.
* CardCarryingVillain: She scoffs at the idea of friendship and comradery existing in the virtual world, believing there's only room for more self-serving ideals such as deceit and hatred.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: It's hard not to see the parallels between her and Quinella, with Kirito [[YouRemindMeOfX even being reminded of the Pontifex after Mutasina reveals her true colours]]; they're both attractive, female [[TheArchMage Arch Mages]] with ControlFreak tendencies who show [[ItsAllAboutMe little regard for anyone who isn't themselves]] and are callous to those around them. However, whereas Quinella was already the effective ruler of the world, controlled her minions through propaganda and brainwashing, and is hinted to have deluded herself into thinking she's the good guy, Mutasina effectively starts at the same level as most other Unital Ring players, is forcibly controlling her minions with a spell that inflicts ColdBloodedTorture on them, and is more of a CardCarryingVillain who believes that virtues like trust and friendship have no place in the virtual world.
* ControlFreak: As she states to the players she tricked into getting afflicted by her Noose of the Accursed, she did so with the purpose of preventing rebellion against her and infighting amongst them.
* EvilSorceress: A female mage player who uses her high magic skill, presumably carried over from ALO or whatever game she was playing at the time, to inflict a large group of players with a status ailment that allows her to suffocate them at her command in order to gain an unwilling army.
* ForcedIntoEvil: Her use of the Noose of the Accursed, which can allow her to inflict something resembling suffocation of anyone afflicted with it, is for the purpose of forcing the other players who attended the alliance meeting into serving her unquestioningly.
* VillainHasAPoint:
** After revealing her true colours, she's quick to insult the fellow group leaders and their followers for honestly believing someone claiming that they could grant some permanent buff to everyone who came. While callous about it, it's hard not to see her point.

! [=NPCs=]
!! Bashin Tribe
[[folder: General]]
A group of tribalists who Liz, Yui and Silica encounter.
----
* BladeOnAStick: Appears to be their preferred weapon.
* TheBeastmaster: As revealed when ten of them move to Kirito Town and witness Kuro and Misha living there, they seem to display greater respect to people who can tame dangerous monsters as opposed to hunt and kill them. This causes them to highly revere Silica.
* BizarreTasteInFood: It turns out the grass Liz and Silica were using to make rope is something they eat. Liz and Silica compare the stew they made with it with ''shirodatsu'' / ''niimoji''[[note]] dried and boiled taro stalk [[/note]].
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: They speak in a strange language described to sound warped and distorted, as if subject to several layers of noise filtering. Yui is able to realize that it's multi-layered Japanese based on the Seed Nexus, and is [[TranslatorBuddy able to decipher it to communicate with them.]]
* {{Stripperific}}: Noted to not cover up much skin, to the point that Silica notes that even if the grace periods before she and Liz can get new gear and they're forced to go around in their underwear, they probably wouldn't stand out too much as a result.
* TrademarkFavouriteFood: Thornspike Cave Bear Meat is apparently is considered a delicacy among them.

[[folder: Yzelma]]

The Leader of the Bashin camp Silica, Lisbeth and Yui find themselves in.
----
* ActionGirl: {{Implied}}. [[InformedAbility We never see her fight]], but her [[BrawnHilda buff physique]] and MightMakesRight views certainly imply she's a powerful warrior, and she's certainly strong if she can lift a log to throw at Silica.
* BarbarianLonghair: She has long red hair that goes down to her waist.
* BrawnHilda: A large and well-built woman.
* FantasticRacism: {{Implied}}. She's immediately opposed to Liz, Silica and Yui joining her tribe's scouting party due to them apparently not proving their worth, hinting a generally low opinion of the strength of "Fels" as they call them.
* FieryRedHead: Has a head of red BarbarianLonghair.
* MightMakesRight: She's initially opposed to Silica, Lisbeth and Yui joining their scouting party due to not being convinced that they'd be much help, prompting her to challenge Silica to cut a log she throws at her to prove her skill. She takes a similar stance when invited to come to Kirito Town, with her duelling Asuna over it.
* SinisterScimitar: Her weapon is stated to be a thick, curved cleaver that she duels Asuna with.
* {{Stripperific}}: Like the other men and women in her tribe, she wears very little. From what can be seen in an illustration, she wears only leather chest armour that [[BareYourMidriff Bares Her Midriff]], along with a gladiator-like skirt consisting only of leather straps that leaves a pair of red underwear exposed.
* WorthyOpponent: Comes to the regard Silica and Asuna this after they win her separate challenges to them, with her loss to the latter compelling her to join the expedition of tribesman moving to Kirito Town.
