The Hero

    Lucky Swiftail

Lucky

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucky_3.png
The title protagonist of the series.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Lucky is a Cartoony-looking fox and aside from his cape and shoes he is completely naked. He also was completely naked and didn't have the cape or the shoes on him when he was a baby in the beginning prologue intro in New Super Lucky's Tale.
  • Artificial Gill: Chapter 7, Trench Trouble, Lucky is wearing an air bubble to breathe underwater.
  • Badass Adorable: A young cute little bundle of joy and energy that triumphs over everything the villains throw at him, often on his own. Even more notable in the Updated Re-release since Jinx and the Kitty Litter successfully banished most of the other older, more experienced Guardians to other worlds and destroyed Lucky's home but they just can't seem to beat the kid himself.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His default cape and shoes are blue as well as a number of his other clothing options.
  • Bring It: Yells "Come on!" before every boss fight. However, he's actually facing the camera everytime he says this so he may actually be daring the player to show the boss their best.
  • Child Prodigy: If you complete the postgame of New Super Lucky's Tale, he becomes the youngest person to ever pass the Guardian Trials and become a Guardian.
  • The Chosen One: The Book Of Ages specifically sucked him into its pages to stop Jinx, despite the presence of several fully trained Guardians.
  • Fast Tunneling: Lucky can dig and burrow underneath the ground very fast to grab buried coins and attack enemies. He moves much faster underground.
  • Four Legs Good, Two Legs Better: In Super Lucky's Tale he runs on all fours. But when it received a Updated Re-release, Lucky runs on 2 legs.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: After stunning enemies with his tail or digging up from below them, he can defeat them by running into them and booting them away. Lampshaded word-for-word by George the Mail Golem in the loading screen.
  • Kid Hero: A young fox kit along with his sister who protects the Book of Ages.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents were banished along with the majority of the Guardians by Jinx.
  • The Quiet One: He's comparable to Mario in this regard though he's a bit more talkative in New Super Lucky's Tale. While he's capable of speech, he doesn't have anything to say to any of the allies or enemies he meets throughout the worlds though he has a few words for most of the Kitty Litter whenever he confronts them before their boss fight. The only person he actually tries to hold a real conversation with is his sister Lyra.
  • Say My Name: The only villain that he calls out by name is Tess, probably because it's a pretty short and easy-to- remember name relatively speaking. For General Buttons and Fluffinstuff, he settles for "Hey, you two!"
  • Super Drowning Skills: Apparently he doesn't know how to swim, making a number of areas far more dangerous for him than they would be otherwise.
  • Tail Slap: Useful as a hover jump and strong enough to stun an enemy.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Always has a smile on his face. This is actually commented on by other characters, and seems to drive members of the Kitty Litter (Tess and Meowmalade specifically) crazy.
  • Portal Book: He is trapped inside to stop Jinx and his kitty litter and to collect the pages to return home to his older sister. Slightly averted since he holds the book and collects the pages.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: The prize for collecting all the missing pages in a given world is getting to unlock a new costume based on the boss of that world for Lucky to wear. This includes the female members of the Kitty Litter, Tess and Lady Meowmalade. While Tess's mad scientist outfit is fairly unisex, Lady Meowmalade is wearing a strapless evening dress, gold earrings and arm bangles, a pearl necklace, and high heels.

Villains

    Jinx

Jinx

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jinx_5.png
An evil feline sorcerer who is the primary antagonist in Super Lucky's Tale & New Super Lucky's Tale.
  • Beard of Evil: He’s the main villain and has a large beard.
  • Big Bad: He’s the main villain.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: They even qualify as an unlockable hat for Lucky and are referred to as "Bossy Eyebrows".
  • Beauty Is Bad: Subverted, He took on Lyra's illusion at once to get Lucky to give him the Book but then spoils by doing the Evil Laugh before revealing himself to Lucky.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Several of his words as the Mysterious Stranger Golem show that he's very proud of his children and has a lot of good things to say about each and every one. He even seems to be rather caring towards them at times though Tess seems to think he has Parental Favoritism towards Lady Meowmalade whom he does in fact dote on pretty hard.
  • Evil Overlooker: That's him in the background of the cover art. Also, in game he tends to show up as a pair of ominous eyes over a darkened sky.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Has a deep, commanding voice, far more intimidating than nearly any other character in the game.
  • Eye Beams: One of his methods of offense during his boss fight.
  • Final Boss: Lucky must defeat him in order to get home.
  • Fallen Hero: Was once one of the Greatest Guardians, and was even a friend to Lucky and Lyra's father Liam. Sometime after his world mysteriously disappeared, he made a power grab for the Book of Ages and, well, here we are.
  • Hidden Depths: Possibly. As the Mysterious Stranger Golem, he may question if Lucky's fighting for the right side and states that right and wrong is a matter of perspective, making note of how history is Written by the Winners.
  • Large and in Charge: Much larger than the other villains, even the massive Lieutenant Fluffinstuff.
  • Master of Illusion: Jinx's specialty. In the old days he used to use his powers to play tricks on the other Guardians. In fact, he's the reason there are so many invisible coins scattered throughout the worlds.
  • Obviously Evil: He's certainly rather sinister looking compared to his children. His Golem disguise is also darker than other golems with his unnerving glowing yellow eyes, bushy white eyebrows and deep echoing voice. His Talk Sprite is also shrouded in a shadowy aura.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: After his defeat, he is seemingly trapped in the Book. Lucky and the rest of the Book lost world inhabitants are seen leaving but Jinx is left behind. With Lucky taking all the missing pages with him, Jinx is powerless and trapped. The second ending after the Guardian Trials reveals he and most of he Kitty Litter are in prison for their crimes... Unfortunately, someone missed Mittens.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: He's still wearing a Guardian Sigil even though he's betrayed the Order of Guardians for his own agenda.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He took on the illusion of a sinister-looking golem to spy and follow Lucky through the hub worlds of the Book, watching his progress.

The Kitty Litter

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitty_litter.png
We up all night to get Lucky!
Jinx's children and secondary antagonists in Super Lucky's Tale & New Super Lucky's Tale.
  • Adorable Evil Minions: Goes with being all cute kitties.
  • Enemy Summoner: During each of their boss battles, these cats will summon Mooks to fight for them, often continuing an attack as you have to deal with the enemy. A blessing in disguise as trouncing the enemies refills Lucky's lifebar.
  • Last of His Kind: Supposedly around the time Jinx turned evil, his whole planet disappeared from the Book of Ages, meaning he and his kids are the last cats known. Whether or not the two events have a connection is never stated.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Almost all of them have a phase of their boss fights where they'll fill the screen with fireballs launched from their cannons. Averted for Lady Meowmalade who instead relies more on her damaging dance floor and the laser beams shot from her disco ball. Similarly, Tess will have phases where she will rely on either cannon fire, laser beams, or a mix of both.
  • Punch-Clock Villains: After their respective boss battles, they seem to have no qualms about simply hanging around in levels and home worlds as NPC characters. You can even walk up to them and converse, and while they may mock or even threaten you, they will not attack.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Played straight for the siblings' strategist and shortest member General Buttons. Subverted for Gadgeteer Genius Tess who's actually the second tallest member.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: George the Mail Golem will occasionally wonder if Jinx and his family feel lonely after their home world mysteriously vanished from the Book of Ages.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: It'd be impossible to defeat most of them if they didn't use an attack that can be used against them. Averted for Tess who instead suffers from her boss arena having technology that Lucky weaponizes against her.

    Master Mittens

Master Mittens

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/master_mittens.png
I VANISH!

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Apparently is this to Lady Meowmalade if her comment towards Lucky about being "too busy to babysit Mittens and his friends" is anything to go by.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Hypnotizes most of the benevolent golems of Sky Castle to serve as his own personal army.
  • Cat Ninja: He is a cat and a ninja.
  • Catchphrase: Frequently ends his conversations with Lucky with "I VANISH!" before disappearing in a puff of smoke.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Nearly quoted word-for-word as he's excited to finally be facing off against one of the Guardians only to meet Lucky. Doesn't stop him from trying to treat him like his arch-nemesis.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: The bombs Master Mittens launches can be knocked back at him. This is the only way to damage him.
  • I Know Kung-Faux: Mittens is a Master of Meow-Shu martial arts, which Lucky finds out from Greg he learned from reading comic books. Played with in that, while he never really demonstrates any battle prowess against the protagonist, he does vanish in puffs of smoke and was apparently the only member of the Kitty Litter to avoid capture in the end.
  • I Need You Stronger: Implied. He pops up in a couple levels to tell Lucky that if he can overcome the difficult path ahead, he will be worth challenging in direct combat. There are even points where he'll reward Lucky with coins for keeping up with him.
  • The Rival: Seems to see Lucky as his, though he insists Lucky prove himself worthy of the distinction.
  • Smoke Out: He makes his escapes this way.
  • Starter Villain: The first member of the Kitty Litter that Lucky meets.
  • Wrong Assumption: Firmly convinced he's The Hero of the story and Lucky's his Arch-Enemy..

    Tess

Tess

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tess_7.png
GOOD TALK!

  • Big "NO!": In the midst of her introduction no less and right after her flying vehicle explodes after malfunctioning.
  • Catchphrase: Ends a number of her conversations with Lucky with "GOOD TALK!"
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She is this for the villains, having invented a device such things as a teleporter, a device that shrinks Lucky down into a hamster ball for her maze runs, and Lady Meowmalade's hypnotizing speakers.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: A rather one-sided variant on her end. As an NPC in Gilly Island, she complains about how much of the image-obsessed Lady Meowmalade's success is due to her assistance, giving her technology to hide her poor singing skills and mind control the islanders with ease. She's especially unhappy about her father Jinx apparently favoring Lady Meowmalade over her in spite of this.
  • Humongous Mecha: Pilots a colossal praying mantis-based giant robot during her boss fight.
  • I Call It "Vera": She also dubs it "Petunia".
  • Mad Scientist: She comes across as this, and has a mad scientist laugh.
  • Recurring Boss: Sort of. She does not fight Lucky again directly but subjects him to completing her mazes as part of her experiments.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: "Tess" is presumably based on famous inventor Nikola Tesla and she ended up becoming a skilled inventor herself.
  • The Rival: With the Guardian Anna Lyd, who is also a gadgeteer genius.
  • Token Good Teammate: To an extent. She's the only member of the Kitty Litter that's made any sort of attempt to improve the lives of the people of the world she's been stranded on though her experiments and inventions rather than outright antagonize them. Sadly, her own ego prevents her from seeing all the chaos she's causing in the process. Even still, the wormals try to learn from her by being more willing to use more technology to improve their lives. She's also willing to help her older sister Lady Marmalade with her mind-control music even if she's openly envious of the praise said sister gets as a result.
  • Teleportation: Pulls out a device to teleport away after every conversation with Lucky in the main story.
  • The Unfavorite: Claims that Jinx favors Lady Meowmalade over her. She is not happy about it.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Tries to use her technology to increase the production of chicken eggs in the farms at Veggie Village. She only succeeds in creating an obstacle course filled with dangerous giant eggs rolling around. Overlaps with Condescending Compassion since she calls the local Wormals ignorant for not appreciating her "brilliant" technological "help".
  • Villain Has a Point: After her defeat, the Wormals conclude that she may have been crazy, but she's not wrong about how more advanced technology can be used to improve their lives.
  • Wrench Wench: She's the inventor among the bad guys and even has a wrench sticking out of her hair bun.

    General Buttons & Fluffinstuff

General Buttons & Fluffinstuff

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/general_buttons_and_lt_fluffinstuff.png
TO BATTLE!!

  • Acrofatic: Fluffinstuff can really move for such a big kitty. Of course you are warned that while he may look like a marshmallow, he's all muscle.
  • Always Identical Twins: Averted hard. According to the Mysterious Stranger Golem, they're apparently twins and Fluffinstuff merely hit his growth spurt first. Even ignoring the vast size difference, you could hardly tell they'd be part of the same family let alone as twin brothers.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Fluffinstuff is the big guy and General Buttons is the little guy.
  • Blatant Lies: Buttons insists that his defeat and imprisonment at Wrestful Retreat was all part of his plan to lure Lucky to Gilly Island.
  • Covered in Gunge: After their ship sinks into a tar pit in the aftermath of their defeat, they are present in the next scene completely drenched in the dark sludge, having been apparently rescued and apprehended by the Yeti's.
  • The Dividual: They are always seen together and are generally treated as a single villain.
  • Dual Boss: During their boss fight, they each launch separate attacks at Lucky. Fluffinstuff jumps up and attempts to squash him while General Buttons launches a cannon volley at him.
  • Dumb Muscle: Fluffinstuff.
  • Going Down with the Ship: Upon defeat, General Buttons can be seen stoically saluting as his ship sinks beneath the waves. Subverted in that both he and Lieutenant Fluffinstuff appear later on Gilly Island to fight Lucky... and again go down with the ship when their cargo of fireworks explodes.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: The bombs General Buttons launches can be knocked back at him. This is the only way to damage them.
  • In a Single Bound: The only members of the Kitty Litter to not teleport away after speaking to Lucky. Instead, Fluffinstuff takes a huge leap into the sky while General Buttons hangs on to his tail. Buttons himself seems able to jump into the sky during his boss fight.
  • Kick the Dog: General Buttons targetting the Yeti's food supply to get them to surrender to the two of them is already a pretty nasty tactic. What really makes it despicable is that he's doing it to a pacifistic, peace-loving indigenous group that's giving little to no resistance to his demands.
  • The Napoleon: General Buttons, who rides atop the much bigger Fluffinstuff and is literally an expy of Napoleon Bonaparte.

    Lady Meowmalade

Lady Meowmalade

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lady_meowmalade.png
Ciao, darling!

  • Auto-Tune: Present in her music playing on the speakers scattered throughout the Gilly Islands though it's more obvious in the vocal track playing during her boss fight. Probably explains why her actual singing is revealed to be rather terrible.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: While the only one of Jinx's children to be fully dressed, she doesn't wear any shoes.
  • Catchphrase: Likes to end her conversations with others with "Ciao, darling!"
  • Dance Battler: While she does not dance during the battle itself, Lady Meowmalade's boss battle takes place on a disco dance floor. Lady herself sits on top of a disco ball.
  • Evil Diva: She has the beauty, attitude and singing abilities to qualify as one.
  • Freaky Electronic Music: Her electronic pop music seems to have a mind-altering effect as detailed below.
  • It's All About Me: This is certainly the attitude she holds to. One notable example is that when General Buttons and Fluffinstuff's ship sinks after being blown up, she's more concerned about how her fireworks show is ruined than whether or not her two younger brothers are okay.
  • The Music Meister: She uses her music to mind control people into dancing to her music. Slightly subverted in that her actual singing voice is awful and the mind control is caused by the speakers made by Tess.
  • Valley Girl: Has the speech patterns and fixation with looking good on social media down. It kinda clashes with her classy style and mature, sultry tone of voice. Not to mention, according to Tess she's supposed to be the eldest sibling.

Others

The Order of Guardians

    Lyra Swiftail

  • Beware the Nice Ones: The Penultimate Warrior states that she's a strong fighter and not someone you want to make mad.
  • Big Good: Is the current leader of the Guardian Order, or at least what's left of it.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her scarf is the same shade of blue as her younger brother's cape.
  • Cool Big Sis: Cares a lot about her younger brother and the feeling is mutual. The reason Jinx was able to trick Lucky into handing him the Book of Ages so easily was because of how much he trusts her. Jinx taking on her form briefly made Lucky let his guard down long enough for him to snatch the book from him.
    • In the postgame, she's very much proud of Lucky's heroics and doesn't have any doubts about his chances of completing the trials to becoming a full-fledged Guardian despite his young age.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her mom's missing too. In the postgame, she's planning on searching for them though she's currently focused on seeing if Lucky can complete the Guardian Trials.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: She'd be fully dressed if she wore pants.
  • Promoted to Parent: With the loss of their parents and even their elder brother, she's become Lucky's defacto guardian.
  • La RĂ©sistance: The last thing standing between Jinx and total domination of all worlds... and they're losing.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Leads the last remaining Guardians and wears a blue scarf that billows dramatically in the wind.
  • Speaking Simlish: The sole aversion amongst the NPC's that can be talked to during gameplay. Much like Lucky, she's capable of spouting random phrases in perfect English.

    Ch1p

  • The '80s: His trials are themed after it with bright Neon City aesthetics and 80's style New Wave music.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Downplayed and Played for Laughs, when malfunctioning he may suddenly spout oddly negative things about his trials that range from being rather cynical to outright unsettling and borderline threatening i.e. Claiming that the next trial is highly dangerous and wasn't designed for organic lifeforms. He'll always recover and assure Lucky that everything will be fine.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Occasionally lapses into binary. When you first meet him, he says two phrases in binary that read, "I can't wait!" and "Yay!" Upon clearing all of his trials, he'll use binary one more time, saying "You're the best!"
  • Carpet of Virility: They're actually springs sticking out of his metal chest, but they serve the same purpose.
  • Leet Lingo: Usually when malfunctoning though he sometimes uses it when speaking normally as well.
  • Nice Guy: When he isn't malfunctioning, he's incredibly cheerful and supportive of Lucky's endeavors.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: A pastiche of Richard Simmons with a similar fixation on physical fitness.
  • Robo Speak: Mostly downplayed. Occasionally he speaks with binary though he uses Leet Lingo more.
  • Robot Hair: Styled after Richard Simmon's.

    Anna Lyd

  • Child Prodigy: Notes how Lucky's success makes him the second youngest Guardian to join ever. Lyra later tells Lucky that Anna was the youngest having passed the Trials back when she was a grub.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: The inventor of the group.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name sounds like "analytical" and she's the current Guardians Order's smartest, deepest thinking member; and like "annelid," the group of animals that earthworms belong to, which Wormals like her are designed after. Doubles as Punny Name.
  • The Smart Guy: The brains of the current group of Guardians.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Well checkers anyway.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Big, round glasses.
  • Southern-Fried Genius: A genius inventor Wormal of the southern U.S. influenced Veggie Town.

    The Penultimate Warrior

  • Affectionate Nickname: Lyra calls him "P.W.".
  • The Big Guy: The physically largest of the current Guardian Order and the team's muscle.
  • Cool Shades: Green-framed and rather flashy.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: States that Lyra and him didn't really see eye to eye at first until a certain incident as described further below.
  • Large Ham: Like all the other yeti's, he's not one for subtlety.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Disappointed by how his former warrior tribe of Yetis have turned to pacifism and how he's the only one that still supports direct violent confrontation in the face of evil.
  • Noodle Incident: Claims that he and Lyra used to be on rough terms with one another until an incident where she lost her temper, got in a big brawl, and he had to bail her out. On her end, she's insistent that he started that fight and that she had to rescue him.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: His name is based on The Ultimate Warrior, but his design evokes Macho Man Randy Savage.

    Lucas Swiftail

  • The Aloner: Apparently, Lyra tried to recruit him into their current Order of Guardians at some point but he declined. She notes that he always liked to march to his own beat.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Implied to not be on the best terms with his other siblings. Lyra seems to consider him to be tough, but very smug. Exaggerated with his willingness to work together with the group of villains that split up their family and destroyed their home.
  • Cool Shades: Gives him a sleek, but distant look.
  • The Ghost: The Mail Golem has dialogue commenting on him despite never making a single appearance aside from being present in a group photo of the Swiftail family. Averted in The Stinger when he frees Jinx and the Kitty Litter from imprisonment.
  • Hero of Another Story: He was apparently on an expedition to find new worlds when Jinx attacked and the portal network was shut down. Its speculated that he's having adventures of his own trying to get home. Averted when its revealed he was an invited guest to Lady Meowmalade's Gilly Island party and later released Jinx and the other villains from their cell, meaning this may need to be prefixed with the word "fallen."
  • Rooting for the Empire: In-Universe. His letter to Lady Meowmalade reveals that he considers himself to be her biggest fan. With the revelation that he's working together with Jinx and his family it may even overlap with Love Makes You Evil.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's not exactly easy to talk about him in detail without spoiling relatively significant revelations as you can see.
