YMMV / Super Lucky's Tale

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Master Mittens an actual villain, or has he merely been duped by his siblings? On the one hand, he took over Sky High Castle, has been kicking the heads off the nominally peaceful mini-golems, and even has a brainwashed army of the same under his command. On the other side, he introduces himself as the hero, is easily the friendliest of the Litter towards Lucky, and doesn't seem all that interested in finding pages for his Dad.
  • Angst? What Angst?: For someone who is quite young and gets seperated from his family, Lucky sure doesn't seem too bothered.
  • Creepy Cute: Lucky always staring at you when the camera is focused on them, especially when changing outfits, where his head moves separately from his body when you rotate Lucky. This is actually The Artefact from Lucky's Tale; where Lucky would repeatedly interact with the player, and even look at them, which is fine and endearing in VR...less so on consoles and PC.
  • Difficulty Spike:
    • Ch1p's levels in the Guardian trials are a grueling series of platforming that are easily tougher than pretty much any previous levels. And there are nine of them.
    • The Wrestful Retreat level "Peaceful Place", is uncharacteristic Platform Hell, seemingly to fit with its ironic name. It even has a mini boss gauntlet which is required to progress further in the level.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Half of the Mail Golem’s loading screen messages (when he’s not spouting bad puns) are him expressing how much he values Lucky as a friend.
  • Moe: Lucky is an absolutely adorable and energetic young fox. And you can dress him up in costumes too.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The rest of the Kitty Litter just want Lucky to give up; Jinx, however hijacks a foxhole challenge with the intent to either seriously injure or outright kill Lucky, with some not-so-veiled threats to emphasize it. This despite the fact that Lucky 1) isn't a true Guardian, just a young cub trying to get home, and 2) is so young he probably has spent most of his time alive on the run from Jinx. Even with his moments of Villain Has a Point, Jinx is trying to murder a kid.
  • Older Than They Think: The series has been called a Yooka-Laylee clone but the original title came out in 2016 (one year before Yooka-Laylee). While the second game did come out after Yooka-Laylee, it's unlikely they took more influence than trailers and images, since it wasn't even a whole year after Yooka-Laylee's release.
  • Sequel Displacement: The original Lucky's Tale was a pack-in title for the Oculus Rift. Super Lucky's Tale is more mainstream because it's on more popular consoles and isn't a virtual-reality game. New Super Lucky's Tale gets this even more because of being on more systems than the other two.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The game is a very cozy and cutesy ride. It’s hard to play it and not be in a good mood while doing so.
