Tropes apply on the clan
- Adults Are Useless:
- They sent a search party to find Abel, consisted of 13 adult and 4 teens. Because they were ill-prepared for the outside world, and couldn't stand being away from their village and loved ones, 7 adults turned back to the village, before even reaching the closest city!
- They reached Lomarn City, after 10 days from their departure (Abel took 3 days on Jaime' wagon), with help from a kind adventurer who found them after they lost hope when their map got eaten by a magical beast. However, the group are such Shrinking Violet they let Giselle handle the talking. Once inside the crowded city, their anti-social trait kicks in, making them a spectacle.
- They get kicked out of the friendly hotel they stayed in, because they smoked their leaves indoor, breaking the city rules. After they lost their leaves stash, the adults stayed in another hotel, while the teens went to become adventurers to earn money and collect information on Abel.
- Brother–Sister Incest: It's a custom in the clan for brothers and sisters to marry after the brother's coming of age, if they're less than 5 years apart. Abel was mortified when his father sprung the matter on him.
- The Dreaded: It says something when a three hundred-years old elf remembers them as the "The War Clan" and "The Gods of Death in the Battlefield". Mind you, said elf was facing Abel. The clan now on the other hand, not so much.
- Fish out of Water:
- The Abel search party quickly prove to be inept after day 2. Homesickness settled in, exhausted and fatigued from walking for hours and sleeping outdoors, and lost the will to go on. One adult carved Ortems to resemble his family.
- Godzilla Threshold: The Chieftain isn't allowed to leave the village, unless in the case of a threat to it, or at the request of the royal family.
- I Can't Believe It's Not Heroin!: Abel's new brand of specially cultivated incense-smoke leaves was so good, the members of the tribe held a riot at their leader's door when they learned that they can't grow them anymore. How good was that smoke for them??
- Maligned Mixed Marriage: The Marren tribe initially treated Abel's desire to marry Mea as this in the epilogue, because he ran away from marrying his sister, broke the village's rules and traditions, and brought an outsider for a marriage partner. Then it gets Reconstructed after his parents accepted Mea into the family, and the Chieftain, along with Giselle and Filo shown their support for their union, making the villagers respect his wishes.
- Magical Native American: The manga adaption's picture of the Marren is inspired by this trope, with traditional clothing, totems, drums and smoking pipes. They also pray to the spirits of their ancestors.
- Mystical White Hair: All the tribespeople sport white hair.
- Practical Currency: The clan has no currency, resorting to trade and bartering. They often use incense-smoke leaves instead, making it also Money to Burn. The Chieftain later replace it with Demon Ore Coins, after the price plummets.
- Technicolor Eyes: All the tribe have red eyes.
- We Have Become Complacent: The Marren clan got hit with this HARD. With the last war that the kingdom needed them in was a hundred year ago, they became too comfortable. Their incredible magic is now used to wash their hands and light fires and now rely on archery to hunt. The only experienced mage known is the Chieftain, who isn't happy with the situation and is too jaded to expect anyone to show interest in magic.Narrator: The former secret weapon of the Dinrat Kingdom was nowhere to be found. They had become fragile in many ways as they straddled the generations since they were neglected by the royalty and no longer sent off to war, and enjoyed peace without being threatened by anything.
Giselle Belek
- Action Girl:
- Surrounded and beaten down a Greater Bear that attacked the Abel Search Party with her Ortems. She's her brother's sister after all.
- Risen to level semi-D-Class Adventurer at Lomarn City's Adventurer Support Center in an "unusually fast rate for a teenager". Which is one week.
- Anti-Villain: All what Giselle wants is to find her brother, bring him back to the village and marry him!. He's just scared and confused from the sudden change in his life. Or so she thinks...
- Badass in Distress: Gets grabbed and engulfed in Sim's spirit body, after he loses his patience and decides to confront Abel directly, with her as a Human Shield. With Sim being a 10,000 year old Great Spirit, she was helpless against him.
- Batman Gambit:
- Sabotaged Abel's Ortem truck to break down at the middle of the forest road to the city, because he'll never make it on foot with his weak body, and he won't make it back to the village as well before he'd collapse from exhaustion. This way the tribe will catch him red-handed breaking the rules, and they would make sure he'll never try to escape ever again. If it wasn't for that carriage though...
- Leaked the fact that the Chieftain failed to reproduce Abel's incense-smoke leaves cultivation method to the villagers, who are desperate to smoke it again, causing complaints and riots at the Chief's door. Forced into a corner, the Chief calls to form a search party to get Abel back.
- Big Brother Attraction: To her brother's troubles.
- Break Them by Talking: Tries to break Abel and Mea up by talking about the Marren's traditions and rules, to make Mea thinks that their traditions are absolute and must be followed no matter what, that Abel is in a precarious position because he broke the rules and will be severely punished for it, and heaping the guilt on Mea because she's holding him back. It almost works as Abel can't defend Mea, fearing that he'll anger Giselle, until Mea brings up the fact that Giselle is ignoring Abel's wishes for her own convinence, stunning her.Giselle: “You can say it’s not relevant because you don’t know anything! You, who is an outsider of the tribe, might not understand! We respect the richness of our blood. That’s why there is no precedent for marriage with an outsider of the tribe! My brother has a father, a mother, a friend, and a benefactor in the village! How can you be so selfish?”
Mea: “Y-You’re wrong, Mea didn’t mean it ……”
Giselle: “Ohhhhhh! I’ve figured it out! Because it doesn’t matter, does it? Isn’t it because you don’t care about brother that you can say such things?” - Child Prodigy: Learned everything she knows about magic from observing her brother. Also he did teach her and Shibi some magic lessons.
- Consulting Mister Puppet: After Abel left, she found and carried around a green book she refers to as "Sim-san". She talks to it and gets advice from as if it was her friend. Little did she know...
- Cute Bruiser
- Deconstructed Character Archetype: Giselle might as well be what happens when the Little Sister Heroine is encouraged to marry her brother. Her parents filled her head with how great and lovely it would be to marry her brother, even read her and Abel stories that portrays it as the norm and blissful thing to happen. Because of it, Giselle grew orbiting around her brother, following him and admiring him, becoming an introvert who sees no point in making friends, with her eyes only on her brother. Once Abel tries to confront her about the marriage, her interactions with him becomes less cute and more borderline creepy. Suggesting to him that he lets her sleep with him, talking about "perverted stuff" married people do, etc. just convinces Abel that there is no way to talk her out of it. Even learning that Abel isn't interested doesn't deter her, and instead she impedes his escape to corner him. Her rejected love for her brother turned into an unhealthy obsession, that Sim was all happy to exploit in his plans. Even worse, Giselle is willing to ignore what her brother wants for what SHE wants, and would fly into a fit of rage upon learning that Abel is traveling with a GIRL (LN short stories only). Once Sim betrays her and uses her against her brother, she realizes her mistake and begs her brother to kill her, if it meant saving himself from Sim.
- Determinator: Neither stupid adults nor giant frogs made of sand nor Desert Bandits nor tornadoes stays this girl from finding her brother.
- The Dreaded: Abel treats the thought of his sister catching him like a death sentence, after his escape. However, it stems from the feeling of guilt he has over suddenly leaving her and hurting her, mixed with the fact that he'll probably be forced into their Arranged Marriage once she find him, as well as the fact that he cannot say no to her. In the light novel and manga however, Abel had a nightmare about Giselle catching him, to make his fear feel justified.Abel (narrating): I’m not going to unleash my magic on Shibi or my father Zelrut, but I’m not going to unleash my magic on Giselle, whom I escaped from after I single-handedly hurt her.
If she cries out, I may have to be swept away and go home. - Father, I Want to Marry My Brother: Was overjoyed when she learned that she'll marry her brother thanks to the tribe's traditions. Once she learned how he actually felt about it however...
- Faux Affably Evil: When she spots Mea hugging Abel's shoulder, she frowns and looks in disgust at her, but then she thanks her for taking care of her brother throughout his journey and bows her head to her... and then asks her to leave because Abel's problem is with his village and she's not welcomed.
- Graceful Loser: She quits trying to coerce Abel into marrying her, after the incident with Sim. Even though she's hurt about it:Giselle: “…… I might regret that later. But for now, I can’t seem to separate the two.”
- Head-Turning Beauty: Many boys are overwhelmed with her beauty, Shibi included. Too bad she has her eyes on her brother.
- Hopeless Suitor: She's in love with her big brother Abel, who repulsed of their tribe's beliefs, thinks that marrying her will be unhealthy for both of them and isn't interested in an early marriage.
- I Let You Win: Abel once mentioned that he beaten Giselle after many fierce battles.. in an arm-wrestling match. She was smiling and laughing while he was sweating, but it was a win for him.
- I Will Find You: Joins a search party of 17 members of the Marren clan to bring Abel back. By the time she finds him, she only have Shibi and Lil with her.
- Kung-Fu Wizard: She attacks Mea with kicks, flying kicks, mid-air kicks, palm strikes and elbow strikes, teleporting to front and behind her. Abel notices to his amazement, that she somehow mastered a Secret Art of the Marren tribe's martial arts, called "Wooden Puppet".
- Love Makes You Crazy: When She cornered Abel and Mea, Abel mentions to her the letter he left behind when he ran off and how he said he doesn't see her as a Love Interest. Giselle smiles and say she understands, making him relax and wonders if he misjudged her... but then:Abel: “…… I’m glad. I’m glad that Giselle understands ……”
Giselle: “It’s okay. I didn’t get that letter in the first place, after all.”
Abel: “Hm?”
Giselle: “It was never there, brother. That’s why father, mother, or anyone else in the village, no one knows. If brother takes my hand, I’ll forget it too. That’s why that letter was never there. Now, let’s go home, Brother.”
Abel (Narrating): She didn’t understand me at all. - Mask of Sanity: Throughout her focus chapters, she's always cheerful, polite, smiling, and has went Cute and Psycho because her beloved brother/ fiance ran off from their marriage!!.
- My God, What Have I Done?: After being taken a hostage by Sim and seeing her brother helpless against him, she cries and begs Abel to kill them both, but he's unable to do it. Fortunately, Sim petrifys her anyway, leaving him wide open for Abel to vanquish him without hurting her, and she gets better shortly after.
- No Social Skills: Was told she was to marry her brother since childhood, making her not interested in making friends.
- Oblivious to Love: Ignores Shibi's romantic advances.
- Opt Out: After the fight with Sim is over and she's freed from her petrification, Giselle leaves with Shibi, Lil and Filo and return to the Marren village. Abel, however, does talk to her and explains why he and Mea are leaving the Dinrat Kingdom, and he does comfort her while she's crying over him leaving and promises her he'll return someday to the village.
- Sanity Slippage: When her plan to keep her brother trapped in the village failed, she went to her and Abel's room and stabbed the Ortems he made with a kitchen knife."Nii-sama... Why? Why might you not be returning?"
"It's not like..'Shank'..I'm mad or anything. 'Shank'" - Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: When Abel tries to goad her into ceasing her assault on Mea, reminding her that he's stronger than her in magic and could summon his Ortems on her, she instead DARES him into shooting her with magic:
Giselle: “Then why don’t you just do it! Now, quickly, point your wand at me and shoot me with magic or whatever! You can take Sim-san away from me and run away with that horn lady!”
Abel (Narrating): It, It’s no use…… The blood is completely rushing to her head.
Abel (Narrating): It, It’s no use…… The blood is completely rushing to her head.
- Stronger Sibling: To Abel in physical strength. When Abel measured her strength using his 'Display Status' magic, she had 8, to his 2. She was eleven at the time.
- Surrounded by Idiots: Her feelings about the Abel Search Party in general. The adults are either after Abel's incense-smoke leaves, treating the journey like a group trip, or came around to brag to their families later. Then 7 out of 13 adults turned back to the village after a rainy night. Then the rest of adults just stayed in a hotel while she and the rest of teens (Shibi, Filo and Lil) turned to adventuring jobs to provide money. Then came the straw that broke the camel's back, when she heard that the adults were planning to go to Nefersia, the Capital of Water, for sightseeing and fun. This led her to take the teen group and split from the adults to look for Abel themselves.Giselle (to herself): This …… would definitely have been better if I had come alone……
- Teleport Spam: She has her Ortem moves and teleports her to its location multiple times, trying to attack Mea from behind Abel, with kicks and palm strikes.

- Tranquil Fury: After she corners them, Abel and Mea notice her smiling after Abel praised her skill with the Ortem. But when they looked into her eyes, they both felt her anger and froze in their place.
- Unwitting Pawn: She gets tricked by the Great Spirit Sim into taking the Abel Search Party on a Wild Goose Chase until the Moon Festival Din Mei is near, then have her attack Abel and Mea, and then be taken as a hostage to threaten Abel into compliance, kill them both and kidnap Mea. Fortunately, Abel foils Sim's plan and rescues Giselle.
- Villainous Breakdown: After Abel easily destroys her Ortem with a flame ball, she ceases her attack and starts crying, begging for her brother to come back to the village, even saying that she'll give up on their marriage and anything else as long as he comes back. Unfortunately, Sim is having none of that.
- Violence is the Only Option: After Abel asks her to hand over the grimoire Sim, she refuses and cries about that he'll take her only mean to find him and run away. Suddenly the grimoire opens and writes some words for her, making her decides on attacking Mea to incapacitate her and strongarm Abel into coming back later. Thing is, she hits with strong attacks that could potentially kill Mea, if it weren't for her guard Ortem protecting her.Giselle: “…… You’re in the way, so I wanted you to sleep a little, though.”
