A tribe of magicians who live in the mountains in Dinrat Kingdom. Once regarded as the kingdom's secret weapon in wars thanks to their exceptional magic power and extensive knowledge. Now, the tribe grew complacent after a hundred years has passed with no wars or summons from the king. The Community that Abel was born into.

    Tropes apply on the clan
  • Adults Are Useless:
    • They sent a search party to find Abel, consisted of 13 adult and 4 teens. Because they were ill-prepared for the outside world, and couldn't stand being away from their village and loved ones, 7 adults turned back to the village, before even reaching the closest city!
    • They reached Lomarn City, after 10 days from their departure (Abel took 3 days on Jaime' wagon), with help from a kind adventurer who found them after they lost hope when their map got eaten by a magical beast. However, the group are such Shrinking Violet they let Giselle handle the talking. Once inside the crowded city, their anti-social trait kicks in, making them a spectacle.
    • They get kicked out of the friendly hotel they stayed in, because they smoked their leaves indoor, breaking the city rules. After they lost their leaves stash, the adults stayed in another hotel, while the teens went to become adventurers to earn money and collect information on Abel.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: It's a custom in the clan for brothers and sisters to marry after the brother's coming of age, if they're less than 5 years apart. Abel was mortified when his father sprung the matter on him.
  • The Dreaded: It says something when a three hundred-years old elf remembers them as the "The War Clan" and "The Gods of Death in the Battlefield". Mind you, said elf was facing Abel. The clan now on the other hand, not so much.
  • Fish out of Water:
  • Godzilla Threshold: The Chieftain isn't allowed to leave the village, unless in the case of a threat to it, or at the request of the royal family.
  • I Can't Believe It's Not Heroin!: Abel's new brand of specially cultivated incense-smoke leaves was so good, the members of the tribe held a riot at their leader's door when they learned that they can't grow them anymore. How good was that smoke for them??
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: The Marren tribe initially treated Abel's desire to marry Mea as this in the epilogue, because he ran away from marrying his sister, broke the village's rules and traditions, and brought an outsider for a marriage partner. Then it gets Reconstructed after his parents accepted Mea into the family, and the Chieftain, along with Giselle and Filo shown their support for their union, making the villagers respect his wishes.
  • Magical Native American: The manga adaption's picture of the Marren is inspired by this trope, with traditional clothing, totems, drums and smoking pipes. They also pray to the spirits of their ancestors.
  • Mystical White Hair: All the tribespeople sport white hair.
  • Practical Currency: The clan has no currency, resorting to trade and bartering. They often use incense-smoke leaves instead, making it also Money to Burn. The Chieftain later replace it with Demon Ore Coins, after the price plummets.
  • Technicolor Eyes: All the tribe have red eyes.
  • We Have Become Complacent: The Marren clan got hit with this HARD. With the last war that the kingdom needed them in was a hundred year ago, they became too comfortable. Their incredible magic is now used to wash their hands and light fires and now rely on archery to hunt. The only experienced mage known is the Chieftain, who isn't happy with the situation and is too jaded to expect anyone to show interest in magic.
Narrator: The former secret weapon of the Dinrat Kingdom was nowhere to be found. They had become fragile in many ways as they straddled the generations since they were neglected by the royalty and no longer sent off to war, and enjoyed peace without being threatened by anything.

    Giselle Belek
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/18_65.png
Surely nothing is wrong with her ...Oh Crap!.
Abel's little sister. Always followed behind her big brother since birth, and was often left in his care by their parents. This caused her to develop a strong attachment to Abel, which worried him.
Giselle: “Then why don’t you just do it! Now, quickly, point your wand at me and shoot me with magic or whatever! You can take Sim-san away from me and run away with that horn lady!”
Abel (Narrating): It, It’s no use…… The blood is completely rushing to her head.

    Abel and Giselle's Parents

Zelrut: "Once the ceremony is over and done with, he'll settle down.."
Zelrut Belek and his wife are Abel and Giselle's parents. Fascinated by Abel's fast growth as a child, now having to contend with his weird antics like filling his room with carved ortems and using magic whenever he like it.

"I-It's not like I saved you on purpose!"
Granddaughter (or Great-Granddaughter) of the Chieftain. She became interested in Abel since childhood, because of his passion for learning magic and his frequent visits to the Chief's home.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/14_n.jpg
"May Abel-san come back soon, preferably single"
Son of Galia Ardy. Treated Abel rudely on their first meeting, and took every chance to look down on him. But after Abel saved him and their fathers from a greater bear, he starts respecting him and becomes his first friend.
  • Beneath the Mask: He mentions that he cried to his father and was upset over Abel's disappearance, but when he was alone, he proclaims:
    Shibi: “He did it.”
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Implied. He wanted to go on a date with his crush, Giselle. He got to go with her to the forest after Abel ran away, only for her to only worry and think about her brother, looking for clues to what happened to him, and find where his ortem truck ended up.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: He has a huge crush on Giselle, and would do anything Abel and Giselle asks him to, if it means getting his approval and her attention.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He got really upset and cried foul on Abel, after the latter's wedding to Giselle was announced.
Shibi: “That’s not what you said, Abel-san!”
  • Fireball Eyeballs: In the manga, when Abel told him that Noswell might force Giselle to marry him if Abel's plan didn't work.
  • Hide the Evidence: Finds the charred remains of Giselle's first carved Ortem that Abel destroyed, and hide them from her.
  • Hopeless Suitor: After Abel and Giselle says their goodbyes, as the former is about to leave the Dinrat Kingdom on a ferry with Mea, Shibi declares to Abel that he'll "make Giselle happy", only for Abel to assert his opinion on him, followed by someone else:
Abel: “…… Sorry, I still don’t want Shibi to be my brother-in-law.”
Shibi: “Why?! It isn't like you to refuse! Why?!”
Lil: “…… I also don’t like the idea of Shibi-san getting together with Big Sister Giselle.”
    Shibi: “L-Lil-chan!?”
  • Imaginary Love Triangle: Thought of Abel as his rival for Giselle's affection thanks to the tribe's traditions. Once Abel makes it clear he doesn't see his sister that way, Shibi cheers up, and asks Abel if he could call him brother-in-law, to Abel's annoyance.
  • I Will Find You: Joins the Abel Search Party.

    Lil Liefel
Lil: “I’d go anywhere with you, Big sister Giselle, if it meant I had to!”
A girl from the Liefel family. She was forcibly recruited into the Abel Search Party because they needed a diviner in the journey.

    Noswell Karlco
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noswel.jpg
"Hey, you're raising your ortem the wrong way, you know?"
  • The son of Norman Karlco and future head of their family business in cultivating incense-smoke leaves. He was sent to intimidate Abel from growing his own smoke-leaves, but saw Giselle and wanted to threaten her into marrying him.

    Norman Karlco
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/norman_0.jpg
"And I’ll kick off that ugly old man and become a new patriarch…! I’m ready for it already!"
Head of the Karlco family and Noswell's father. Utilizes his incense-smoke leaves cultivation business in a bid to control the village through it trades.
  • The Don: Has control over the incense-smoke leave producing families. Through aggression and harassment, he forces them to join his business, and intimidate anyone who tries cultivating his own leaves.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Thanks to Abel spreading his brand of incense-smoke leaves throughout the village, Karlco's business dropped, and every worker under their thumb was released.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Following his failure to sell his incense-smoke leaves again, Norman tried spreading rumors of strikes and rebellions to get the Chieftain to make a mistake and be deposed, while Norman appoint himself leader. He's arrested for it, and is locked in a cave in a remote part of the village until he cools down.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: He bounces back to his corrupt ways after he learns that Abel's smoke-leaves can't be grown anymore and try selling his own smoke-leaves to the angry villagers at the chieftain's doors, claiming they're modified from Abel's brand. They aren't fooled.
  • Netorare: Stole his then-wife from her brother, then enjoyed the expression he had on his face. If that didn't make him evil enough, nothing would.
  • Sadist: In the Webnovel, he and Noswell take great pleasure from seeing one of their workers as he's close to collapsing. And add how they pile work on him, and falsely accuse him to reduce his salary.
  • Tyrannical Town Tycoon: Controlling the flow, quality and value of the smoke-leaves just for his family to benefit and for the village to be cowed to his whims.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He marches to the town market to check on Noswell, sees a long line on a stall and mistakes Abel for his son. Abel corrects him and points him to Noswell's now empty stall. He asks Abel for his name and recognize him as the "Ortem Freak", then he goes Laughing Mad, gets a Nosebleed followed by a Faint in Shock.

    The Chieftain
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chief_4.jpg
"There is nothing more for you to learn from me"
The leader of the Marren clan and the oldest member of tribe. Accepts Abel as a student to teach magic to, seeing as no one in the village is interested.
  • Cool Old Guy: Abel mentions that he leads the adults whenever a monster threat is closing in, with him often killing the threat by himself. He is considered the strongest mage in the Marren village, until Abel and later Giselle came into the picture.
  • Cruel Mercy: Helps Norman Karlco recovers from his loss in the "smoke-leaves market war" by buying his entire stock of smoke-leaves, which became 'trash' after the price plummet, for a few cheap Demon Ore Coins.
  • Godzilla Threshold: He could only leave the village in case of emergency, or by a royal summon.
  • Older Than He Looks: He looks to Abel like he is in his 70s, which could be because he's slowing his aging with magic. Though he might be 150 years old.
  • Old Master: Said to be the Oldest member of the tribe. Not that it slowed him down.
  • Shipper on Deck: Supports Abel x Filo.
  • Tears of Joy: After Abel surpassed him.
  • Tsundere: He quickly hides his feelings of joy after Abel surpassed him, and switches back to his Stern Teacher persona once Abel looks at him. Abel lampshades the trope, with it being the reason Filo behaves like him.
    Abel: “Tsundere genes huh..”

    Epilogue Characters (Unmarked Spoilers)

Medio and Alma Belek

Abel and Mea's newborn son and daughter.
  • Patchwork Kids: Medio has Mea's eyes and her blue hair, Alma has Abel's white hair, and small horns from her mother's side.
  • Like Father, Like Son: After Mea takes Medio away from Abel, who was reading a very complicated book on magic to his infant child, Medio tries reaching for the book.
Mea: “Don’t worry, Medio, you’ll turn into Abel if you read that stuff.”
    Medio: “Ah!”
Medio was reaching for me, or rather, for his book.
Abel: “Me-, Mea, Medio wants to learn!”
    Mea: “It’s just a coincidence!”
  • Unto Us a Son and Daughter Are Born: Medio (male) and Alma (female) were born a fraternal twin. The Marren tribe's astrologer told Abel and Mea what they were expecting and their gender in advance.
