The character options players can choose from. Four high schoolers that forgot until last minute to ask a date out to prom, now having to compete or work together to get a date.

The original four are also the main options in Monster Camp and Roadtrip, looking to make some summer memories and hopefully have a date for the upcoming meteor shower. DLC and Updates added an additional fifteen characters to choose from in Camp (eleven publicly, with Fridge and Modeus being free, and four exclusively for Kickstarter backers and contest winners), and four to choose from in Roadtrip.

  • Ascended Extra: In an odd way; besides Zoe, Juan, and Jacqueline, you don't really get to really engage with the player characters as most dialogue with them stays the same between characters (besides the house of mirrors in Roadtrip), so we only get to learn about them as people in small voice lines and supplementary material. Monster Roadtrip rectifies this, as the extraneous player characters appear with full speaking roles and DLC allows you to unlock the main four as hitchhikers.
  • Big Damn Kiss: In the YAOI ending. This is parodied, while the kiss does happen, it's full of the weirdly erotic dialogue typical of yaoi and makes everything around you pink and petals come out of nowhere.
  • Butt-Monkey: Depending on your choices in each event, you can end up an unpopular loser that keeps getting the short end of the stick and blamed for everything that goes wrong.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Literally. Each player character has a signature color that's used for everything from their outfits to their in-game icons and text. Even their default names are Yellow, Red, Green, and Blue.
  • Consummate Liar: To romance the monster of their choice, the player character lies a lot, which is lampshaded several times in-game.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The sheer amount of random stuff that’s described as “always being on them” is staggering, as well as incredibly niche skills that they’ve acquired that are somehow relevant to whatever you choose to do.
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: In the DEITY ending. If you buy the "The Power Totem of Z'gord, Ruler of the Dark Realms" item and have high charm stat, you can romance Z'gord and take it to Prom. Downplayed in Second Term, with said deity now becoming one of the main love interests, Zoe.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: For the Lovable Sex Maniac that is the player, the Omega Ending, which is also called THE SUPER SECRET ONE is this. It has a multitude of requirements before the player is even able to do the events, and is a bit longer than usual, but it ends in a full-blown orgy between all your classmates, including a CG of all the romantic options waiting for you in a hot tub.
  • Endearingly Dorky: All the player characters have shades of this.
  • Evil Minion: This is how you'll end up in Vera's routes. Or, at the very least, that's how she'll treat you. This trope is especially true during her endeavor as a crime lord in ascension. If the CRIME ending is achieved, then this is upgraded to Outlaw Couple.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The ending polaroids reveal that the four main playable characters are in a band called The Player Characters.note
  • Extreme Omnisexual: Account for the secret endings, aside from the several monsters the player date normally, the player has dated an Eldritch Abomination, an amorphous blob, a computer, all three of the witches, the Slayer, the Narrator and has an attraction for dragons due to fanfics.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Vicky is Sanguine (the upbeat and energetic Genki Girl), Amira is Choleric (the tomboyish and passionate Fiery Redhead), Oz is Melancholic (the timid and shy Adorable Abomination), and Brian is Phlegmatic (the laid-back and sleepy Deadpan Snarker).
    • Out of the new Player Characters: Noodles is Sanguine, Susanne is Choleric, Sawyer is Melancholic, and Abdu is Phlegmatic.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Two of the player character options are feminine, and two are masculine. Of course, this is just their standard settings, and the player can choose their pronouns.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Players can ignore the two default options and choose a custom name for their character.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: The player character can commit cannibalism in at least two separate events in Roadtrip, for which they naturally lose Soul.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: It's made abundantly clear that the player character finds Vera and Damien's tendencies toward violence and murder to be very sexy and exciting.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The player character is this for the majority of Kale's route, not realizing that he's aro ace and highly uncomfortable with them flirting with him. When they find out, they're genuinely remorseful about how they treated him and and apologize.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: The narration makes it clear you're attracted to all your classmates and yearn to have sex with any and all of them. Some events outright state how much you think of sex during your free time (imagining going on dates, dreaming of Polly and Damien naked, taking any opportunity to wow them, ogling Scott's physique whenever the chance is given, etc.).
    • This gets deconstructed in Kale's secret route: you're so single-mindedly focused on trying to seduce him that you miss all the signs that he's aro ace and highly uncomfortable with your flirting.
  • Lover and Beloved: Has shades of this relationship with Liam in his YAOI ending, in which the player becomes a master that teaches Liam, obviously, this only applies if the player is either Oz or Brian.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: You can be noticeably turned on by Vera's evil deeds, including stabbing Damien when he asks her for money. Similarly, Miranda's ruthlessness and evil scheming are also arousing. Also, if going after Damien, the player character will usually gleefully join him in stabbing people and setting the school on fire multiple times.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Lampshaded, by the time of the sequels the rest of the cast are very aware of the Player Characters' tendency for extreme and bizarre solutions to mundane problems.
  • Outlaw Couple: The CRIME ending. Vera becomes a crime lord and keeps you as her trusted advisor and respected partner in love.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Official merchandise indicates that they all share this relationship. Special mention goes to Vicky and Oz, who are described as being particularly good friends within the group.
  • Polyamory: It's implied that, while not in a relationship like that, the player character is polyamorous and welcomes this sort of relationship, as well as a yearning to participate in one with their classmates. The achievement for getting all prom dates in the game is called "Polyamorous."
    • During one of the "Dragon Heat" events, they attempt to put this into practice by inviting both Damien and Miranda to a date. With sufficient CHARM, the date goes quite well.
  • Previous Player-Character Cameo:
    • Though playable in the original games, the base four all become love interests in Monster Prom: Reverse.
    • The "New Blood" characters from Monster Camp DLC appear in Monster Roadtrip as side characters that can be encountered during the trip (or, in Noodles' case, running a trading booth that appears at every pit stop).
  • Promoted to Love Interest:
    • The "St. Valentine's Update" to Monster Camp adds a plotline in which two players can potentially end the game with each other.
    • "Hitchhiker Pack" DLC for Monster Roadtrip allows the original cast to be picked up as hitchhikers and potentially romanced (potentially leading to Screw Yourself, as seen here), with the first pack featuring Amira and Oz, and the second featuring Vicky and Brian.
  • Race for Your Love: Parodied in the final event of the PROM KING ending. You will chase Liam in the airport, who is deciding to board to Belarus, where he is still unpopular, but you can stop him by spouting cheesy lines.
Narrator: Because airport security might say no to terrorism, but they can't say no to love.
  • Screw Yourself: Oz, Amira, Brian and Vicky are available as hitchhikers in Roadtrip, but nothing's saying you can't play as them while going for their date endings. The Vicky & Brian DLC even has an image of Vicky having a conversation with herself.
  • Seme: In the YAOI ending, this is parodied. The player gains shades of this. Especially in regards to how suddenly they are domineering and seductive to Liam, but it's never cleared out whether the player tops since the sex is only implied. And again, there's also the fact that in this case, it'll be a female seme, if the player character is either Vicky or Amira.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Oz and Brian, respectively. Oz is a Pretty Boy who sounds about as confident as your classic Shrinking Violet, while Brian is a Hunk with a deadpan attitude.
  • Sleeping with the Boss: In the CRIME ending. The player and Vera start a romantic relationship, but she wants to make it clear that while they are equals in love, she is still the player's boss.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: A lot. Especially when making the wrong choices or supporting people like Damien and Vera. One event can lead you to almost starting a war between Scott and Switzerland because you told him to make a flag.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Amira and Vicky, respectively. Amira is a fiery girl who even prefers tuxes over dresses, and Vicky is a cute looking Genki Girl.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The REVENGE ending. Miranda asks you to fulfill a series of tasks that seem random, but as it turns out, are part of a scheme to kill the water polo team in a gruesome way for kicking her out, which she reveals when you ask her to prom.
  • Worthy Opponent: The FIGHT ending. Damien gets turned on during your fight against him at prom, and it leads to you having rough sex.
  • Yaoi Fan: In one event, it's revealed you make erotic fanart of Damien and Liam. This event is the first stop to the YAOI ending.

    Oz/Yellow

Voiced by: Alexander "Octopimp" Gross (formerly Cryaotic)

A-Alright!

  • Adorable Abomination: Oz, a Humanoid Abomination that is the personification of fear is also an adorable and shy Living Shadow boy.
  • Age-Gap Romance: The only character within his age group is Zoe, while the rest are around 20 years old except for Liam who is around 400 hundred.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Oz is fear itself. The little beings that appear around him are personifications of phobias.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: The physical polaroids sold by the game developers mention that he is this to Vicky.
  • Birds of a Feather: This post reveals that he's this with Zoe. In addition to the two being ancient beings, they share a love of geeky hobbies and invite each other to conventions.
  • The Ditherer: His hitchhiker events in Monster Roadtrip suggest he doesn't actually enjoy making the absurd decisions that being a Player Character requires and is vocally relieved when told that the current PC will be making the choices.
  • Dork in a Sweater: Oz uses a yellow cardigan, and has a timid and sweet demeanor.
  • Endearingly Dorky: One of the polaroids describes him as "a bit dorky."
  • Expy: Oz's inspiration in both design and personality was Death, from the Johnny Wander. The similarities are extremely noticeable.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With everyone due to how old he is.
  • Irony: Oz is the personification of fear, but he is also quite the scaredy-cat.
  • Living Shadow: Oz is a living black mass representing fear itself.
  • No Mouth: Oz has no visible mouth, but is still able to speak and eat. Interestingly, his little shadow monsters do have mouths, despite being extensions of him.
  • Only One Name: Officially, Oz has no last name, while the other characters all have last names.
  • Pretty Boy: Oz counts as this, with some slender looks and a pretty frame to him.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Word of God had confirmed that Oz was born long before the Zodiac was first conceived, making him a minimum of 3000 years old and one of the oldest characters in the game. In spite of this, he bears the physical appearance of a young man.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Brian's Manly Man.

    Amira Rashid/Red

Voiced by: Danielle McRae

Let's do this!

  • Ambiguously Brown: One of the few characters with a human-like skin tone, Amira qualifies as this. Her name is Arabic, and as a djinn, she's based on Arabian and Islamic mythology; but whether she's even human enough to have a racial identity is debatable.
  • Flaming Hair: Amira, a fire djinn, has fire instead of hair. Monster Camp confirms this to be a very real and functional fire, as she's shown using it to roast marshmallows.
  • Fiery Redhead: Amira, figuratively and literally, being portrayed as a very feisty girl and also her hair is made out of a plume of fire.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: If at the end of a run, Amira gets together with Scott, the Polaroid at the end of the credits will be one of them stargazing together while she wears Scott's jacket.
    • Fan art of Amira wearing Damien's default outfit jacket is also quite popular among players who like to pair the two up.
  • I Have Brothers: When talked to as a hitchhiker in Monster Roadtrip, she will mention that her love of dares comes from a childhood of doing them with her brothers.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: The Polaroid for Amira and Miranda getting together shows the two of them in a movie theater watching a movie as they both sob, with Amira having a runny nose while tears stream down her face.
  • Mundane Utility: In Monster Camp, she roasts marshmallows with her fiery hair.
  • Playing with Fire: Amira is capable of summoning and using fire.
  • Terrible Artist: Her Polaroid with Vera shows them sculpting busts of one another: Vera's is beautiful, while Amira's is... passable at best. Her artistic efforts at the Scout HQ in Monster Camp make it even clearer that visual arts aren't her forte, as she produces a childishly bad painting only after a great deal of apparent effort — in contrast with Vicky (who's very good) and Brian and Oz (who both display at least some skill).
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Vicky's Girly Girl.
  • Western Zodiac: Scorpio. Fitting given how passionate and competitive she is. Her birthday is even confirmed as November 3rd.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: One ending Polaroid - which shows her at a swimming pool with Miranda, Vicky, and Polly - indicates that she is aquaphobic. Which makes sense, considering she is at least partially made of fire. (This is presumably a particular issue if she dates Miranda.) She also clearly does not have a great time at the Lake in Monster Camp, where she is shown wearing water wings and clutching a pool floatie in an effort to keep her head dry. Word of God has clarified that this is a mostly irrational phobia, and that Amira doesn't actually get hurt by water.

    Brian Yu/Green
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brian_yu_new_sprite.png
Voiced by: SungWon Cho

Umm... sure?

  • Attractive Zombie: Aside from a few parts of missing flesh, Brian is quite the Hunk.
  • Body Horror: Subverted. Despite missing small parts of his mouth, forehead, and shoulder, these add up to his charm as a zombie.
  • Bonding Through Shared Earbuds: With Liam in their ending polaroid. They do this again in the credits of Monster Roadtrip.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His tone of voice is generally very laidback and deadpan.
  • Hunk: Brian is tall, with broad shoulders and a muscular build.
  • Losing Your Head: Played for Laughs at the Lake in Monster Camp, where his activity image shows his body searching for his separated head in the lake.
  • Not So Above It All: He doesn't seem to care what's going on around him most of the time, but even he has his moments. If the player decides to play dodgeball, his custom polaroid shows him being super into it and in the Monster Camp demo he's seemingly super freaked out by the Haunted Manor.
  • Punny Name: The zombie's default name is Brian, which is an anagram of "Brain."
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Oz's Sensitive Guy.
  • Sex God: According to some of the interactions you can have with him in Monster Roadtrip, Brian is an excellent partner in bed.
  • Sleepyhead: He's prone to dozing off on occasion, most notably if he decides to go to class. This idea is also backed up by official merch which describes him as usually being rather lazy and sleepy. Played up even more in Camp, where almost all of his voice lines are about him wanting to sleep.
  • Western Zodiac: Calm, lazy, and a Taurus. His birthday is on May 18th.

    Vicky Schmidt/Blue

Voiced by: Sarah Anne Williams

Let's go!

  • The Ace: Of the four main playable characters, she's the best and most dedicated student. She's also the lead singer of The Player Characters (a band made up of, you guessed it...), and Monster Camp reveals that she's a talented artist too.
    • Supplementary materials often treat her as the de facto leader of the group — though, because this is Monster Prom and everyone's a little goofy, that's likely because she's also the bossiest and the others don't care enough to challenge her on it.
  • Blue Is Heroic / True Blue Femininity: The polaroids and trading cards describe her as being a kind overachiever, who does not mistake kindness for weakness.
  • Birds of a Feather: A non-romantic example with Brian, as she reveals in her hitchhiker conversations in Monster Roadtrip: both of them died in the Human Realm before they crossed over as reanimated corpses in the Monster Realm, and they formed a kinship when they became roommates.
  • Dork in a Sweater: Vicky wears a blue sweater and is an Endearingly Dorky Genki Girl.
  • Endearingly Dorky: The purchase-able polaroids describe her as "a bit dorky."
  • Frankenstein's Monster: Vicky is an adorable version of one. She even has the common nails in her neck and stitches all over her body.
  • Genki Girl: Vicky is drawn and portrayed as one.
  • Go-Getter Girl: She is part of ten extracirricular activities, is altruistic, and she and Vera arguably tie as the most intelligent students in their class.
  • Informed Judaism: According to the creator, Vicky is Jewish. It also helps that blue is a significant color in Judaism. Vicky’s relationship with her religion is explained in more detail in her route in Monster Roadtrip.
  • The Leader: One of the polaroids mentions that she is a good leader.
  • Punny Name: The name Vicky is a reference to Victor Frankenstein.
  • Shock and Awe: Being a frankenstein monster, she's able to generate electricity from her body.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Amira's Tomboy.
  • Western Zodiac: Cheerful, a good leader, and a Leo. Her birthday is on August 16th.
  • Wrench Wench: Mixed with more than a little Mad Scientist fitting her inspiration, Vicky proudly declares herself a woman of STEM and loves to build machines and fix things. Her Hitchhiker event in Roadtrip even involves her fixing a car engine.

Monster Camp: New Blood Playable Characters

    Sawyer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sawyer_sprite.png
Voiced by: Ciarán Strange
The alternate red playable character. To quote the store page, Sawyer may be your choice if you’re more of an introvert who enjoys a little peace and quiet.
  • All Girls Like Ponies: They're encountered at the ranch destination in Monster Road Trip and confesses to considering themself to be a horse girl, finding them easier to talk to than other people.
  • Horned Humanoid: They're a demon with two pale horns.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: Sawyer uses they/them pronouns, and Polly does acknowledge them to be non-binary when encountered in Monster Road Trip. Downplayed in that nearly all the characters are non-human and their gender doesn't seem linked to their being a demon.
  • The Quiet One: Is described in Monster Camp as being an introvert, and says in Monster Road Trip of having an easier time of talking to animals than other people.
  • Succubi and Incubi: Sawyer is a lust demon, however since they're non-binary, it would be inaccurate to describe them as either an incubus or a succubus. The developers took to describing them as a "fuckubus", but the fandom also uses the term "concubus" instead, which is derived from the Latin concubina meaning 'to lie with'. When encountered in Monster Road Trip the dialogue describes them as a "fuckubus".
  • Winged Humanoid: They have a pair of small, pale-colored demon wings on their back.

    Abdu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abdu_sprite_9.png
Voiced by: Zeno Robinson
The alternative yellow playable character, a mummy. Abdu is chill AF and may be the perfect choice if you just want to go with the flow.
  • Attractive Zombie: Like Brian (assuming you class mummies as a subset of zombies), he's very easy on the eyes for a dude who's been dead for who knows how long.
  • Mummy: The type of monster he is.
  • Really 700 Years Old: While the devs haven't confirmed ages for the alternate PCs yet, the fact that he's an Ancient Egyptian Mummy certainly hints at this.
  • The Stoner: In the UFO Spot, if you choose to reinforce Scott's mind with useless factoids he and Kale reveal that they went on a Boogle deep dive about bread baking and related facts while high recently.
  • Those Two Guys: In Roadtrip he forms a duo of stoners with Kale, and they are encountered together in both the UFO Spot location and the Knifeland storyline.

    Susanne
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/susanne_sprite_9.png
Voiced by: Alex Cazares
The alternate blue playable character, a storm elemental. Susanne brings a loud, electrifying personality that lets you go full badass.

    Noodles
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noodles_sprite.png
Voiced by: Alexander "Octopimp" Gross
The alternate green playable character, a jellyfish. Noodles… Noodles is just Noodles. Pure unadulterated derp energy... until Monster Roadtrip. When, uh... well. Let's just say his characterization is considerably more dicey there.
  • Blasphemous Boast: Wants to evolve his giftshop so that he can kill God.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: His voice snippets tend to be a tad stranger than the others. One of his quotes is "Just follow your kidneys!"
  • Honest John's Dealership: Noodles in Monster Roadtrip runs a stand at the rest stop at which he'll trade things he found for things you have. He will openly comment on how your choices are terrible. He also runs a "Gift Shop" where he sells rocks, just rocks.
  • Micro Monarchy: He rules his own country that consists of just his shack and the property around it, inspired by Molassia.
  • The Sociopath: Roadtrip shows he really has little to no morality, doing such things as selling rocks by throwing them at bystanders heads to get them to buy rocks to throw at him, stealing birthday gifts and selling them back to their recepent, and threatening his customers.
  • Token Nonhuman: Every other playable character is a humanoid, while Noodles looks like a jellyfish.

Monster Camp: AF (April First / A Fridge) Update Playable Character

    Fridge
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moncamp_player_characters_fridge.jpg
Voiced by: N/A
A refrigerator was added as a playable character for April Fools' Day 2021.
  • April Fools' Day: Was released on this day as the standard April Fools joke. The devs even had fun with this, stating that "AF" was an acronym for "A Fridge".
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Averted. It's just a refrigerator.
  • Cargo Ship: In-Universe, any time the player wins with Fridge will be this. It even gets a little post-it note with a heart in the success endings.
  • Joke Character: You can play as a refrigerator in a dating simulator. You bet it counts.
  • The Speechless: … It's a refrigerator. Those aren't known for being conversationalists.

    Glitch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/monster_roadtrip_glitch.jpg
Voiced by: N/A
A shadowy, multi-eyed abomination that's actually just slightly mischievous and rather obnoxious.
  • Ax-Crazy: They really like to stab people with knives. This includes the mirror images of themself in one of the Carnival events, and various members of the Merkingdom court in the Money destination, to the point that they gain the official title of "the Betrayer" in that ending.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: They have multiple white eyes, including one on the end of their tail, and another that's hovering in the air next to their body without actually being attached. Sometimes their appearance causes them to appear on other people in their vicinity as well.
  • Glitch Entity: An In-Universe example, whose "voice" is just distorted computer noise, and whose unique events at locations like the Carnival involve rooting through the game's code in order to consume trash data and convert it into resources for the road trip.
  • Unreveal Angle: There's always something covering up the lower half of their body. Sometimes it's simply off-camera, while most other times there's something in the foreground blocking the view.
