Major Antagonists

Antagonists who are even bigger threats than the minor ones.

    Nightmare Moon
The corrupted version of Princess Luna who betrayed Celestia out of envy.
  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, the Mane Six are able to use the Elements of Harmony to take her down in one shot. Here, Nightmare Moon was able to shoot a magic blast to disperse them, in which she's only defeated after the Mane Seven try to use the Elements of Harmony a second time. Justified because this universe has seven Elements instead of Six (Courage) and they finally worked on Nightmare Moon after Flash Sentry joined with the rest of the Mane Seven.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While she's still a Green-Eyed Monster to Celestia, Luna also turned into Nightmare Moon because all of the Jakhowls were wiped out by Dark Mist and Celestia didn't seem to care.
  • Adaptational Wimp: She also has a bit of this. In canon, she was able to manipulate the forest into scaring all of the Mane Six. Here, a pony could escape that trap, as shown when Flash Sentry unwittingly separates from the rest of the Mane Six and thus avoids being scared.
  • Starter Villain: She's the first villain encountered by Flash Sentry.

    Queen Chrysalis
The queen of the Changelings.
  • Abusive Parents: She pretended to care about Hiveena, but she really intended to make her into a weapon that she could use. When Hivenna grows too strong too quickly, despite her attempts to suppress her, she orders her to be killed.
  • Adaptational Villainy: On top of her canon crimes, she also tries to execute her surrogate daughter, Hivenna, because she was growing too powerful.
  • Bluff the Imposter: Flash tricks her when she poses as Cadance by making up a story about how he crashed into a carrot dog stand when he was a kid and she was teaching him how to fly. Chrysalis says she remembers this made up event, thus revealing to Flash that she is a fake.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: Implied in Evil Flash's timeline. The changelings were among the many races that Evil Flash conquered and destroyed, so it's safe to presume that Chrysalis is long gone in that timeline.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She appears at the very end of "Into the Forest", where she shrinks the Scorpentine that stung Scootaloo and claims she has plans for it. She is entirely covered in shadows with only her magic visible, but her identity is confirmed when the Scorpentine appears in the caves beneath Canterlot, acting as a guard-dog for Chrysalis.
  • Evil Matriarch: Along with still being the evil queen of the Changelings like in canon, she also was the mother of one Changeling, Princess Hiveena. However, she held no actual love for Hiveena, and the only reason she didn’t kill her immediately after she was born to secure her position as queen was to make her into a weapon. When the plan backfire though, she orders her to be killed.
  • Fluffy Tamer: She managed to tame a wild Scorpentine so she could use it for her plans, and enlarged it with her magic to make it even more dangerous. She made it Cadance's guard while she was imprisoned in the caves beneath Canterlot during the Royal Wedding, with it apparently following her commands without issue.
  • He Knows Too Much: When Flash figures out that she’s not Cadance, she throws him into the Crystal Mines with Twilight and the real Cadance.
  • I Kiss Your Hand: Part of the Droning, a magical oath all Changelings undergo, has them kiss Chrysalis on her hoof while pledging themselves to the hive and the one who leads it (i.e. her).
  • Matricide: She implies that she murdered her own mother to take control of the hive and become queen herself, when she mentions she had to "overthrow" her. When she notices her daughter Hiveena is becoming too powerful too quickly and could potentially do the same thing to her to overthrow her, she orders her to be killed.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: She tries to present the invasion of Canterlot as a desperate attempt to save her changelings. Flash doesn’t buy it, and tells her if that she really cared about her changelings, she wouldn’t have invaded Canterlot.
  • Offing the Offspring: She intended to groom Hiveena into a weapon, but when she grew beyond her expectations, she tried to have her killed.

    Doom Raizer
Grand Hoof’s son and Lightning Blitz’s father.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: He hates his father Grand Hoof, blaming him for everything wrong that has ever happened to him in his life due to his neglect.
  • Arch-Enemy: He has the most history and animosity towards Grand Hoof.
  • Berserk Button: He explodes into a fit of rage when Grand Hoof mentions Daisy. Declaring that he has no right to say her name.
  • Beyond Redemption: Grand Hoof gives up on him near the end of Season Three when he realizes that he will never accept his faults.
  • Dead Guy Junior: The ending of Grand Hoof: The Journey Begins confirms that Grand and Live named him after their deceased friend "Doom Chaser". Unfortunately, it is safe to say that his namesake would not be pleased with the pony he has become.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He is horrified when Lightning Blitz arrives and sides with his grandfather after calling him out on his actions.
  • Evil Versus Evil: One Bad Future has him in his colossus form fight a full-powered Tirek.
  • Expy: He is partly based on Ivan Dreyar.
  • Hates Their Parent: He despises his father, Grand Hoof, and blames his negligence in his life for everything that has ever gone wrong in his life, including the deaths of his wife and mother.
  • I Have No Son!: He disowns Lightning Blitz, after he sides with his grandfather.
  • Never My Fault: While he is right that Grand Hoof wasn’t the best at raising him, he refuses to acknowledge that some of his actions were entirely of his own doing.
  • Rage Breaking Point: He reacts violently when Grand Hoof tells him that his wife and mother would have been ashamed of him if they saw him now.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: As a child, he shared Grand Hoof's desire to protect others as a Royal Knight. Suffice to say, he's long given up on that dream as an adult.
  • Villain Decay: Like Shade, he starts off as a big threat to the heroes and was an arc villain for Season 3. Cut to a few seasons later, he lost his fight against Lightning off-screen, got drained by Armalum, and it was implied Flash curb-stomps him and other escaped villains in The Last Problem.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He built a weapon of mass destruction, in the hopes that Equestria would be able to use it in case something were to happen to Princess Celestia. Celestia, however, felt that the weapon was too dangerous, and had him arrested for building it.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: When he was just eight years old, his mother, Live Wire, died in an accident and his father, Grand Hoof, unintentionally neglected him during this period, straining their relationship. After that, he worked alone and was distant from others, until he fell in love with Daisy Chain and eventually married her. However, she was also killed in a mugging, which proved to be the final straw for Doom and drove him to create the Thunder Tomb to protect Canterlot, but the weapon was deemed too dangerous by Celestia, so she and Grand Hoof staged an intervention. In the confrontation, Doom was accidentally scarred by Grand Hoof and eventually arrested, bringing Doom into open conflict with his own father.

    Toxic Fang
A batpony who served as Doom Raizer's aerial combat specialist.
  • Freudian Excuse: In his youth, he developed his fangs and poison much earlier than usual, which caused the other bat ponies to ostracize him. Eventually, one bat pony began harassing him and he bit him out of self-defense, causing the other bat ponies to turn on him, in which they drugged and mauled him. He was saved by Doom Raizer and taught by him how to use his poison as a weapon, so he's now become a dedicated servant of his.
  • Glass Cannon: His poison is incredibly toxic, as even the smallest dose can kill. When Flash fights through the pain that his poison causes long enough however, he’s able to take him down in just one shot.
  • Poison Is Corrosive: His poison is so potent that it can corrode through just about any substance. So when the Royal Knights lock him up, they use Ruby Scarlet’s crystals to hold him down, as his poison can’t corrode through it.
  • Poisonous Person: Like all bat ponies, he developed his naturally occurring poison at the age of 10 that gradually gets more potent as he gets older. However, his poison was unusually more potent than normal, to the point that normal neutralizers wouldn’t work, and it eventually got so potent, that the other bat ponies tried to kill him.
  • Revenge: Tracked down all of the bat ponies that persecuted him and killed them.
  • Tragic Villain: In his childhood he developed fangs and poison much earlier than usual, which made him an outcast among his own kind, even his own family, despite having no control over this himself. Eventually, the others drugged him and tried to kill him. He survived the attempt, and when Doom Raizer helped him recover and taught him how to use his venom as a weapon, he took revenge on the ones who tried to kill him, before becoming a loyal servant of Doom Raizer.

    Grimhorn
A minotaur who served as Doom Raizer's ground combat specialist.
  • Berserk Button: Submitting himself to "weaker" ponies. When Doom Raizer merely mentions that he could help him remove his chains, Crimhorn immediately tries to attack him out of rage.
  • Blood Knight: He doesn’t care about Doom Raizer’s plan, and is only in it for a good fight.
  • Chain Pain: Wields two chains as his primary weapons.
  • Dumb Muscle: Not the most intelligent member of Doom Raizer's quartet. He even spoke broken Equestrian when he first met Doom Raizer. Despite this, he's probably the most durable member of the group, requiring an extensive effort from the Royal Knights to take him down and he was finally defeated after being sent through buildings numerous times.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a burn mark over his chest from his fight with Doom and he's a willing collaborator to his plans.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: When he is defeated by the Royal Knights, he immediately surrenders once Tidal Wave, Iron Core, and Skybreaker are sent after him, as he declares that they are stronger than him.
  • Might Makes Right: Follows this ideology. It's also why he serves Doom Raizer, believing him to be the strongest pony in Equestria and thus he must follow his orders.

    Shade

A Trickster, a species that opposed the Jakhowls a thousand years ago.

  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: Gender reversed example. During the flashbacks in The Forgotten Darkness, Dark Mist is shown promising a young Trickster that he will make sure that if any Jakhowls survive his final plan, then that young Trickster will be the one to destroy them. Shade later reveals that he was the young Trickster from that flashback, the one handpicked by Dark Mist to survive and destroy the last Jakhowl.
  • Arch-Enemy: He is this to Springer. With both of them as the last of their respective races, who were also arch-enemies, Shade is determined to destroy Springer and everything he loves.
  • Berserk Button: Never mocks his beloved master Dark Mist.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Subverted. He’s a dangerous and competent threat on his own, but he knows full well that someone or something greater than him is out there, which is why he chose to remain in prison for now.
  • The Bus Came Back: In "The Next Generation of Aura", it's implied that Shade broke out from the prison.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He's fully aware that he's evil and makes it no secret to others.
Shade: Morals? Why would I need that?
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Shade constantly tries to take shortcuts to gain power instead of letting it come naturally by training like Springer does, and is regularly beaten by him.
    • Shade allowed himself to be subjected to Doom Raizer's experiments to gain his battle form instead of unlocking it naturally, in other words, he cheated to get it. Springer ends up gaining his own battle form naturally, being the youngest Jakhowl to ever gain one, and when the two battle forms clash for the first time Springer curb-stomps him.
    • In The Forgotten Darkness, Shade builds a machine to slowly drain the Mane 7 of their magic to power himself up with a new Alicorn Amulet. When he has Springer on the verge of defeat, the Mane 7 use their Rainbow Power to power up Springer, giving him his Mega mode and once again defeating Shade.
    • When he returns yet again in "The Misadventures of Springer 4: The Final Trick", he once again resorts to cheating by taking several guards hostage and creating runes that will torture them if Springer uses his aura against him. Springer finally calls him out on this by pointing out how every time Shade is backed into a corner he always resorts to cheating, which never ends well for him. It happens once again here when Springer simply beats him up even without using his aura, and shows that he has discovered how to heal himself by using aura instead of attacking Shade with it, which Shade can't neutralize.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction: His first appearance conveniently happens during the Canterlot Wedding, preventing Springer from attending, which would have most likely led to him figuring out that Cadance was an imposter.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Shade is enraged when Springer says he pities him for being stuck in the past and that his only reason for living is to kill Springer and those dear to him, all because of a feud that took place over a thousand years ago that no longer matters.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: He was perfectly willing to work with Doom Raizer, but only because it allowed him to come closer to accomplishing his own goals.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Shade made his first official appearance in "The Misadventures of Springer 2: Dreams of a Jakhowl", but he makes an early appearance in "Dragon Quest", stalking Springer while disguised as a black dragon.
  • Enigmatic Minion: None of Doom Raizer’s subordinates had any idea of what his plan was, but Springer could tell from reading their aura that they all hated him.
  • Expy: Of Zorua and Zoroak in his battle form.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: “Friend” is too strong of a word, but none of Doom Raizer’s subordinates liked him due to him having his own agenda.
  • Great Escape: This is implied when Springer receives a scroll from Celestia.
  • Hero Worship: He worships Dark Mist, the previous leader of the Tricksters, to the point of speaking of him as if he was a god. It is revealed in The Forgotten Darkness that Shade was actually handpicked by Dark Mist himself to destroy any Jakhowls that survive his final plan. Shade even rants that once his mission is complete he will become the second Dark Mist and continue his legacy. He is also enraged when Luna tells him she will make sure Dark Mist is only remembered as the dumbest Trickster ever whose stupidity almost killed both the Jakhowls and Tricksters.
  • Jerkass: He insults everyone he meets and is only ever polite when he's manipulating someone. Pretty much the only creature he's remotely nice to is Dark Mist.
  • Know When to Fold Them: He cuts his losses when it becomes clear that the situation is not going in his favor. He also does this in The Forgotten Darkness when he warns that a shadow is coming to consume Equestria.
  • Lack of Empathy: He doesn’t care if his tricks get people hurt, as long as he gets a kick out of it.
  • Last of His Kind: The Forgotten Darkness reveals that the Jakhowls, and the Tricksters were used in a sacrificial ritual to create the Alicorn Amulet. Shade was part of a contingency plan from Dark Mist to be the Sole Survivor should any of the Jakhowls remain.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He is completely unaware of what happened in The Lost City of Faust, and is blindsided when there are suddenly two more Jakhowls running around.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He plays along with being Doom Raizer's minion to get a chance to take out the Royal Knights and then betray Doom Raizer to achieve the power of the Omni sphere for himself.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when he saw Springer in his mega form.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He’s willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, such as letting himself be experimented on, working with a criminal, and biding his time to carry out his plans. Of course, he’s not cocky, and he knows his limits, as he will cut his losses when his plans go awry. He can also recognize when something is even worse than he is and is smart enough to stay out of its way rather than risk his own neck by going against it.
  • Self-Restraint: He has a way to break out of prison whenever he wants, but because he knows that a shadow is coming to consume the world, he’s going to stay out of its way for now. Now that the Cult of Shadow, the force implied by Shade, has been defeated in the War of the Lost City, Shade has broken himself out of captivity.
  • The Starscream: He was planning on betraying Doom Raizer so that he could steal the Omni Orb for himself. He would have succeeded had he not gotten his tail handed to him by Springer.
  • Super Mode: Like all Tricksters, Shade has a "battle form" that is essentially what his adult form looks like that doubles his strength and power. He allowed himself to be subjected to Doom Raizer's experiments so he could have his battle form unlocked for him instead of doing it himself naturally. Even by the time Springer has entered adulthood and is now in his own battle form permanently, Shade still reverts back to his normal state when heavily damaged, showing he still has not matured into adulthood himself yet.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: His final line in The Forgotten Darkness is that a shadow is coming to consume Equestria, and that he’s going to remain in prison for now, to stay out of its way.
  • Villain Ball: He was planning on betraying Doom Raizer, and would have succeeded if he didn’t choose to focus on trying to kill Springer first.
  • Villain Decay: He starts off as a big threat to the heroes, especially Springer, but by the time he appears in "Misadventures of a Springer 3: Springer the Teacher", he was reduced to a mess and couldn't keep up with Springer. He continues to get beat up by Springer to the point he ends up reverting back to his original form.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: In his first two major appearances during "Dreams of a Jakhowl" and the Doom Raizer arc, he escapes even after he is defeated by Springer. His luck finally runs out in The Forgotten Darkness when he is once again defeated by Springer, but is captured and thrown in prison for his crimes. Though he claims he can escape whenever he wants he decides to stay so to stay out of the way of a greater evil for now.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • When he makes his return in "Misadventures of a Springer 3: Springer the Teacher", he starts to lose it upon discovering that there are more Jakhowls now, Ace and Mira. He keeps demanding to know how they are alive, stating that it should be impossible.
    • He has another one in "The Misadventures of Springer 4: The Final Trick", where after he is once again swiftly defeated by Springer, despite all his efforts and blatant attempts to cheat he has a massive meltdown over how this is his reason for living, to fulfil Dark Mist's dream by killing the last of the Jakhowls and everyone near and dear to them, including Princess Luna. When Springer simply chooses to walk away from him, declaring he is done fighting him for good and says he is putting the past of the pointless feud between their races behind him, Shade screams at him to come back and face him, screaming how he is Springer's "destiny" and his reason for existing. Ultimately, despite being defeated once again, Shade refuses to let go of his past and vows he will leave Equestria and return for his revenge one day, taunting Springer that he will see him in his nightmares.

    Lord Tirek
A centaur who escapes from Tarturus to steal the magic of every pony in Equestria.
  • Big "NO!": Lets out two of these out when he's imprisoned again in Tarturus.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: His ability to absorb magic. It is incredibly useful against anyone who uses magic, which is practically everyone in Equestria, but it is useless against anyone who doesn't use magic. This led to his original defeat, since the Jakhowls were immune to his ability since aura is not magic, it is life force, allowing them to easily defeat him. This isn't much of a problem in the Present though since the only Jakhowl still around is Springer, and by the time they meet Tirek is too powerful for Springer to beat by himself.
  • Evil Versus Evil: One Bad Future has him in his full-powered form fight Doom Raizer in his colossus form.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: In Evil Flash's timeline. While he's never explicitly mentioned to have been executed by him, it is mentioned that Evil Flash killed every creature in Tartarus and considering that Tirek was imprisoned there at that point...
  • The Dreaded: Played With; when Celestia and Luna warn Cadance, Twilight, and the Royal Knights of his return, Ruby Scarlet, who was present for his first attack on Equestria, is understandably terrified to hear he has returned. But so many threats have happened in the thousand years since he first arrived that almost nobody else knew who he was.
  • Kick the Dog: When fighting Springer, Tirek aggravates him further by reminding him of how all of the Jakhowls are extinct, gleefully remarking how it was the one piece of news that he enjoyed hearing during his imprisonment in Tarturus.
  • Mana Drain: Tirek's ability to drain magic is explained to only work on magic and not life force. This makes him unable to drain jakhowls of their powers because aura is made up of life force, not magic.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: It is explained that when Tirek drained Trail Blazer and Misty Veil of their magic, he also drained the magic that was locking their memories of Flash's birth. When he was defeated and their magic returned to them, so did their memories.

    Evil Flash/Shroudheart (Spoilers)
An evil alternate version of Flash Sentry from a different timeline.
  • And I Must Scream:
    • Every time the timeline was changed he didn't instantly travel through time like Twilight and Spike constantly did. He was forced to take The Slow Path, becoming intangible like a ghost and unable to interact with the world around him as it changed. Since the timeline was changed at least a dozen times, and each jump lasted at least ten years, that means he endured this for well over a century.
    • This happens to him once again. When he returns in Evil's Uprising he reveals that after his defeat he was thrown outside of time and space itself, into a dimension where he didn't age, grow hungry, get tired, or do anything except exist. He claims this lasted for several millennia, during which all he could do was observe other timelines, watching as different universes came into and out of existence with every choice made.
  • Bald of Evil: His mane has been shaved and he's definitely got the 'evil' part down.
  • Batman Gambit: This is his main goal with his attack on the Crystal Empire in Evil's Uprising. He knew the location of the Elements and Tree of Harmony, but wasn't sure he could overcome the defenses the tree had. So, he attacked the Crystal Empire, using the same strategy he saw Sombra use in one timeline, knowing the Mane 7 would come running in with the Elements to save the day. Once the Elements are returned to the tree, they take a few minutes to bind their powers back, meaning that until then they are all powerless and vulnerable, and since everyone assumed he was defeated already, their guards were let down as he destroyed them right in front of them all.
  • Black Sheep: As he himself admits, he is the only version of Flash Sentry in any timeline to be bad instead of "standing for justice, courage and protecting others".
  • The Bus Came Back: After disappearing in the season 5 finale, Evil Flash returns for the season 9 premiere, taking the role of Sombra and renaming himself to Shroudheart.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The reason he ends up involved in the time-travel plot with Starlight, Twilight, and Spike is because when Starlight first used the time-travel spell, he was holding the exact same spell in his own timeline and was pulled into the past with the three of them.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Upon his return he declares the name "Sentry" has no meaning for him anymore, getting annoyed when Tirek calls him "a Flash Sentry [he] can get behind", and tells everyone to call him "Shroudheart".
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The events of the Fall of Equestria dark fanfiction are referenced as one of the realities he envisioned, something that disturbed even him.
  • Evil Counterpart: To the main Flash Sentry and the other Flashes across the multiverse. This version of Flash did not rise above his Dark and Troubled Past to become a better pony. While living alone on the streets he stole whatever he was able to, but unlike the main Flash who only did it to survive and suffered massive guilt from it, this version had no issue with stealing at all and saw his thefts as his "rewards". He also decided not to help Twilight against some bullies, which the main Flash saw as the moment his life changed for the better, because it "wasn't his problem". His Lack of Empathy for others and not having the same morals the other Flashes develop from their friends eventually led to Sombra's influence corrupting him and sending him on the path to conquering his Equestria.
  • Evil Is Petty: After he discovers the multiverse and how there are infinite timelines with infinite versions of himself, he resolves to go to each and everyone and kill all the different versions of Flash Sentry that live there, so he will be the only Flash to exist. Even when Twilight points out that this plan is literally impossible, he decides to try it anyway.
  • Eviler than Thou: After he conquered his Equestria, he made sure to take care of any possible threats to his rule, including smashing Discord's statue and murdering every creature within Tartarus.
  • Hero Killer: He has killed at least a dozen different versions of Flash, all from different timelines he visited while Twilight and Spike were trying to stop Starlight. He also implies he killed most of the Royal Knights when he conquered Equestria in his timeline.
  • Killing Your Alternate Self: His whole Evil Plan after discovering the multiverse and that there are alternate versions of himself is to travel to each one and murder the Flash Sentry that resides there, until he's the only Flash to exist. We see him kill several versions of Flash during Twilight and Spike's visits to alternate timelines. He is later on the receiving end of this himself when he is destroyed by the main Flash, with the help of the Mane 6, during their final battle in ''Evil's Uprising.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Even in a series that is Darker and Edgier than the canon show. He kills off numerous characters in his timeline and a filly Rainbow Dash, while being a more serious villain than Starlight Glimmer who darkens the tone significantly when he's introduced.
  • Narcissist: He is the embodiment of pride. He decides to conquer Equestria to satiate his ego and tries to kill every Flash Sentry in The Multiverse simply because he wants to be the only Flash to exist.
  • One-Steve Limit: After being called "Flash" in the season 5 finale, he changes his name to "Shroudheart" in the season 9 premiere, conveniently when he and the main universe Flash will meet for the first time.
  • Only One Name: In the season 5 finale, he noticeably only goes by the name "Flash", with no "Sentry" or any other last name given to him. This further separates him from the Main Flash and his other heroic counterparts, showing that he never inherited the name "Sentry" because he never cared about anyone but himself.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Implied; when he meets Princess Cadance in Evil's Uprising, he states that the two of them "had a lot of fun together" in his own universe, and says that her motherhood has only made her more appealing to him, with a lick of his lips.
  • Seen It All: He constantly brags that due to having observed the unlimited timelines for several millennia he knows everything that is going to happen, including what anyone will say or do.
  • Stupid Evil: His plan to kill every single Flash Sentry in the multiverse. Doing so is completely impossible and even when Twilight points this out, Evil Flash is too egotistical to care.
  • Uncertain Doom: Twilight and Starlight manage to blast him away from them while traveling through the time tunnel back to the past, but Twilight is unsure if they have truly seen the last of him due to her limited knowledge of time travel, and it is possible he could show up again in the future. He's eventually revealed to still be alive in season 9.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: He views the other versions of himself as weak because of how they fight to protect others.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is impossible to talk about him without mentioning spoilers due to his first, and so far only appearance in the Season 5 finale, as before then, there was nothing hinting at his existence.
  • We Can Rule Together: He offers this to Starlight, telling her if she gives him the time-travel spell they can work together to change the past and he'll make a future that's perfect for her, one where she and Sunburst are together. Starlight refuses his offer though, and instead blasts him with Twilight into the Ponyville dam.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He's come into conflict with various female characters in his timeline like Ruby Scarlet and he has no qualms harming Twilight Sparkle and Starlight Glimmer either.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • He manages to set the timeline to his specific timeline by striking the Filly Rainbow Dash in the heart with a Shadow arrow. He later has no problem attacking Spike to try to get the time-travel spell from him.
    • During his return in Evil's Uprising, he decides to take over the Crystal Empire like Sombra previously did as a start to his own plan, and takes Flurry Heart hostage and squeezing her a bit too tightly in his shadowy claw.

    Shadow Corrupter
See Shadow Corrupter in The Cult of Shadow page.

    Malafear
An ancient dragon who possessed Flicker.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!:
    • He manages to capture Heather by threatening to kill First if she didn't surrender herself and accept being converted into an elemental dragon.
    • He forces Flash Sentry to give himself up when he threatens to kill a captured Fire Heart.
  • Arch-Enemy: He absolutely hates Silverbolt and Spike.
  • Big Bad: He serves this for Dragon's Awakening.
  • Big "NO!": Unleashes a very long one upon being sealed away for a second time.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Twilight calls him a monster, which Malafear takes in stride.
  • Desecrating the Dead: After he kills Fira by draining her soul, he kicks her dead body away, letting it stop in an undignified heap, while mockingly telling Silverbolt he picked a "good one" to be his wife.
  • Grand Theft Me: After his spirit is separated from his original body, he possesses Flicker's body as his new vessel.
  • Hate Sink: Unlike major villains who had Dark and Troubled Past or have loyal followers, Malafear doesn't have those and all of his "followers" are brainwashed slaves and everyone, including Twilight despised him.
  • Hero Killer: He murdered Fira in cold blood, and his actions led to Silverbolt pulling a Heroic Sacrifice with a Suicide Attack to stop his rampaging body.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He ends up setting his own defeat in motion with his own plan. The Royal Knights that he converted into elemental dragons to free his original body from its seal are used to reseal him once they are freed from his control. Also, Spike only learned of the Suicide Attack that Silverbolt originally used on him because Malafear trapped him inside his book, where he experienced a Pensieve Flashback, and Spike later uses this himself to reseal Malafear.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Malfear is a Mystic Shadow Dragon, allowing him to steal the souls and powers of other dragons.
  • Pet the Dog: After Flash surrenders himself in exchange for releasing Fire Heart, Malafear surprisingly upholds his end of the deal. However, this is mostly because he has every elemental dragon needed to free his original form and figured that he was going to kill Fire Heart either way.
  • Power Up Letdown: Malafear is ultimately successful in undoing the seal on his original body and getting it back. This in theory should have made him even more powerful and given him access to all the elemental magic he previously stole. However, he discovers to his shock that his body was sealed away for so long that the magic he stole wore off, due to him not being able to naturally produce it. This ultimately left him vulnerable to being resealed almost immediately.
  • Slave Mooks: He brainwashes Ember and countless other dragons into serving him. He also converts several Royal Knights into brainwashed elemental dragons, who are needed to free his original body after it was sealed away by Silverbolt.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: While the series is far from Saccharine Show, Malafear's actions throughout Dragon's Awakening established him as one of the most vile and despicable villains in the series.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He has one as he is being resealed again by Spike, screaming in rage as he asks Spike who he thinks he is.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • He is willing to hurt Spike due to believing he's a reincarnation of Silverbolt.
    • He is also willing to feed Heart to the dragons, forcing Flash to surrender himself.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: He says this to a Flame Dragon in the past before stealing his elemental power, resulting in his death. He ends up doing the same thing to Fira.

    Pony of Shadows
A friend to the Pillars of Equestria, Stygian, before he became corrupted into a shadow creature by his own sorrow.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the canon series, the Pony of Shadows didn't get a whole lot of screen time to establish its threat level. Here, he gets more time to show off his powers and fight the heroes.
  • Adaptational Explanation: The "shadows" that possessed Stygian in the original series and turned him into The Pony of Shadows was not explained beyond their corruption of him. Here, it is discovered they are actually the Corrupted Shadow, thus explaining why the Pony of Shadows is so powerful and why Flash's Sacred Light could harm it when normal Light magic couldn't.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: On the receiving end of this when he's released from limbo, where he's about to get into a huge speech about his plan to "extinguish the light" before Flash interrupts him with an attack.
  • Villain Team-Up: He agrees to one with Void, permitting his Trial-C to attack Flash and steal his Sacred Light, while he focuses on the others.

    Cozy Glow
A Pegasus filly that attends the School of Friendship, while secretly planning to use friendship as a means to manipulate others.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Cozy Glow first appeared in canon during "Marks for Effort", which took place several months after the School of Friendship was opened. Here, she first appears during School's in Session, on the first day of school.
  • Awesome McCoolname: At the end of "Marks for Effort", she briefly muses to herself how soon she will replace Twilight as the Princess of Friendship, before changing her mind and thinking of becoming a queen, before settling on being the Empress of Friendship, clearly because she thinks this title sounds a lot more impressive and evil than just being a princess.
  • Blatant Lies: When she plays chess with Shining Soul, she pretends to not understand the rules of the game or the pieces. When Soul points out she has one of the pieces for a cutie mark, Cozy claims she doesn't know why her mark is a chess piece, and even claims she doesn't even remember when she got it.
  • Crash-Into Hello: She meets Fire Heart when he turns the corner in the hallway and accidentally slams into her.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Her plan to suck away all the magic in Equestria also has the effect of almost killing Faust, the literal God of the universe and one maintaining all of creation. It is also confirmed that she and Tirek had no idea this would happen, meaning they almost destroyed the world on complete accident.
  • Freudian Excuse: She tells Fire Heart how she has no actual family and is constantly being shuffled around from one foster home to the next, with her latest guardians sending her to the School of Friendship hoping it keeps her out of their hair. Though it is unclear how much of this is true and how much is just her trying to manipulate Heart to gain his sympathy.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After her plans are ruined, Shining Soul, who Cozy had developed a rivalry with and would constantly play dumb around, punches Cozy out and knocks her into the school fountain, with Soul saying that was payback for Cozy messing with her brother and breaking his heart.
  • Love-Interest Traitor: Cozy Glow acts as Fire Heart's love interest, with him implying in several chapters to have a crush on her, such as being upset when she leaves town and blushing around her. But she still betrays him and everyone else during her plan in "School Raze", with her knocking him into the same trap she was keeping Starlight in. She does offer him a chance to join her, promising him as ruler of Equestria she can knight him and he can be her personal bodyguard and maybe even be a king one day, but when Heart rejects her offer she has no problem leaving him to be sucked into another dimension with Starlight and his sister.
  • Never My Fault: When Flash reveals that her plan could've killed Faust and ended the world, Cozy refuses to believe him, unwilling to take blame for the wider consequences of her scheme.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • Although her plan to drain all the magic form the world almost resulted in the world's destruction, it is revealed in Jakhowls Rising that her spell ended up draining the magic on a seal on a tribe of Jakhowls that had been sealed away by the Umbrum 1500 years ago, allowing them to finally be freed.
Flash: So...something good did come out of Cozy almost destroying the world. Who knew?
    • Her plan also causes Faust to make a backup for herself to ensure her survival that ultimately saved Flash from his so-called fate.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: She pretends to not understand how chess works or what the pieces are called, despite having a Rook for her cutie mark, only to quickly checkmate Soul.
  • Stronger Than They Look: At first glance she wouldn't be expected to have much strength, since she is just a child and is a bit smaller than other kids her age. However, she shows in "School Raze" to be a lot stronger than she looks. When she gets into a fight with Shining Soul, she is able to get the better of the alicorn despite only being a pegasus, swinging her into the ground, and later while the two are rolling around on the floor and Soul manages to pin her down, Cozy is able to kick Soul off her and into her trap.
  • Villainous Crush: She has a downplayed version on Fire Heart. She initially takes an interest in him after meeting him and tries to get him to trust her. Though she later admits that meeting him was never part of her plan she considers it a "happy accident" and genuinely enjoyed spending time with him. After she reveals her betrayal to him, Soul, and Starlight, she offers him a chance to join her, saying that as the ruler of Equestria she will be able to knight him, thereby fulfilling his dream, and make him her personal bodyguard so they can keep having fun together. She also suggests that if they see if they work together as a couple, then they can get married and he can become her King. However when Heart ultimately refuses this offer, Cozy has no problem leaving him to his fate while laughing evilly.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: She becomes interested in Fire Heart after meeting him and realizing he was Flash Sentry's apprentice. In "The Break Up Breakdown" she whispers to herself that if she can get Heart to trust her, then everypony will trust her. She later confirms to Heart that she decided not to use him as part of her plan and that befriending the CMC was the better option, but still enjoyed hanging out with him.

    Razor Fang
A Jakhowl who has seemingly been prophesized to be the savior of Aurarora.
  • Always Someone Better: He seems like this towards Springer at first. When it is revealed he has his own Mega Mode too, his skills quickly surpass Springer's in their brief fight, though this is mainly because Springer and the others were caught off guard to see another Jakhowl with this form. It is reveled that Springer has actually had his own Mega Mode longer than Razor, and he later obtains a form beyond even that.
  • Big Bad: He firmly establishes himself as the main antagonist in Jakhowls Rising when he attacks and kills Sirius for being "weak" by making an alliance with the ponies, and plans to declare war on them himself.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He loved his parents and their deaths when he was a pup turned him into the raging megalomaniac he is now.
  • Frame-Up: He murders Sirius with a sword made of his aura, and frames his murder on the ponies by wiping Sirius' blood onto Flash's own sword with a cloth, making it seem like the murder weapon, and having his underling Snivel dispose of the cloth. His plan falls apart though when Mirage spots Snivel trying to get rid of the evidence and retrieves the cloth, quickly figuring out Razor was the true perpetrator.
  • Freudian Excuse: Mirage says that both of his parents died to a strange illness years ago when he was still young. He might not have been the nicest pup before that, but afterwards he got way worse until he became what he is now.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He attempts to attack Springer by launching Aura Blast at him while his back is turned, but Springer deflects his Aura Blast and it blasts the mountain instead. It results in rocks falling and slamming on Razor since he was too weak to move his body, killing him instantly.
  • Hypocrite: He accuses Springer of cheating by letting Flash help him during his fight against him, even through he had Snivel help him in the Kyosongai himself.
  • I Reject Your Reality: He believes he is the only Jakhowl who can possibly have a Mega Mode. So when he sees Springer with one himself, he immediately declares that Springer is obviously a fake. Even after he experiences the memories of Springer and the pups via Sirius' Aura-scaping ability, he still believes that the three of them and their pony friends are dangerous and is determined to prove they are a threat.
  • Irony:
    • He believes his Mega Mode, or "King Form" as he calls it, means that he is the Jakhowl spoken of in the prophecy to be the future king of the Jakhowls and lead them to a golden age. But, it is discovered that he only obtained that form a year ago, meaning Springer had his Mega Mode first.
    • Despite his belief that he is the Jakhowl of the prophecy destined to become the future king and defeat "the greatest threat the jakhowls had ever faced", it eventually turns out that he was the threat himself.
  • Jerkass: He's disdainful to almost everyone around him, not even affording respect to his leader, Sirius.
  • Mundane Utility: He uses his Steel Paw to pick at his teeth.
  • Nominal Hero: Being the only Jakhowl in Aurarora to have a Mega Mode, Razor is believed to be the one who will lead the kingdom to greatness when they are reintroduced to the outside world. However, he's so arrogant and contemptuous that he barely qualifies as a hero himself. He ends up crossing over into full-blown villain territory when he murders Sirius.
  • No True Scotsman: Razor can't imagine a Jakhowl ever befriending a pony. When he sees Springer associate himself with Equestrians, Razor thinks it's a magic trick used by the ponies.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He's a Jakhowl supremacist who disdains all ponies as hostile outsiders who must be destroyed.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: His primary colors are red and black, with even his aura color being red, and he is the main antagonist of Jakhowls Rising.
  • Stupid Evil: Razor is so afraid of the world outside Aurarora that he sees everything as a threat to him and his tribe and refuses any possibility of peace. This leads to him murdering his leader Sirius, framing it on the peaceful ponies from Equestria, and declaring himself leader so he can declare war on Equestria. Springer, Mirage, the elders, and the ponies all realize that if Razor starts a war it will be one he can't win, since there aren't many fighters in Aurarora and Equestria and its allies vastly outnumber them, meaning all Razor will accomplish is getting himself and his entire tribe killed, and the Jakhowl race along with them.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass:
    • He wasn't really nice when he was a pup, but he got even worse when his parents perished from an illness.
    • Ever since he's achieved his Mega Mode, Razor's arrogance and pride has inflated to a dangerous level.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: After he murders Sirius and frames the ponies and Springer for it, Razor immediately declares himself the new leader and that the prophecy has come to pass, rallying the other Jakhowls of Aurarora into a frenzy and locking up the other elders so nobody will question his supposed leadership. However, just one day after becoming the new leader, the other Jakhowls calm down enough to start questioning him and Springer challenges him to a kyosongsai, resulting in his defeat and loss of leadership over the tribe.
  • Undignified Death: After being defeated by Springer in the Kyosongai, Razor was unable to accept that he was beaten by a "weakling" like him or that he was sentencing him to be imprisoned by the ponies and tried to attack Springer from behind with an Aura Blast. Springer easily deflected it, but it causes a rock slide, and while everyone else is able to easily avoid it, Razor himself is too weak from the fight and using the last of his energy on his unsuccessful sneak attack to move and is crushed and immediately killed by the rock slide. To add to this, due to his body being buried and his treachery being exposed anyway, he is not given the dignity of a funeral by his people, meaning his body can't be cremated and his memories will eventually be forgotten.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Springer exposes his crime by using Aura-Scape on him in front of the other Jakhowls and when Clair brought up about how his parents would be disappointed in him, Razor lost it and started trying to kill anyone that stands in his way.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He threatens to crush Ace and Mira in his grip.
  • You Have Failed Me: He pulled this on Snivel, enraged that he was so weak he allowed pups like Ace and Mira to defeat him.

    Snivel
Razor Fang's little lackey in Aurarora.
  • The Exile: Springer exiles him from the Jakhowl's territory for 5 years as a punishment for helping Razor murder Sirius.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: He has no real loyalty for anyone and is only interested in his own survival. It is said that he was behind many Jakhowls more powerful than him before becoming Razor Fang's Yes-Man, and then after Razor's death Snivel immediately tries to suck up to Springer as his new leader.
  • Never My Fault: He tries to claim he had nothing to do with Razor's murder of Sirius and that he didn't even know the plan until Razor brought him the bloody cloth. Twilight points out though that he still tried to cover it up, which still implicates him in the crime as an accomplice.
  • Personality Powers: His only known ability is being able to create tiny aura needles. They cause Springer some pain due to Snivel shooting them into the open wounds Razor Fang creates, but on their own they're weak, just like how Snivel himself is weak and depends on Razor Fang for everything.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: He is the Laughable Lackey to Razor Fang. Snivel is pretty much harmless on his own, being unable to ever achieve his adult form and being too weak to win his own battles. He serves as just a tool for Razor to help him achieve his own plans for domination.
  • Yes-Man: He just agrees with whatever Razor Fang says, thinking that if he stays on his good side then he'll keep him as his right-paw when he rises to power.

The Storm King's Army

Members who are affiliated with the Storm King's Empire.

    The Storm King
A horned, ape-like creature who seeks to conquer Equestria.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: He's a lot less goofy than his canon counterpart, being a lot more conventionally intimidating towards his subordinates.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Void in The Movie.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: It's revealed that it has been the Storm King financing Void's projects to kill Flash Sentry and remove him as an early threat to his plans, making him indirectly responsible for all of the Trial battles.
  • Killed Offscreen: His canon death of being turned to stone and then being shattered happens entirely off-screen here.

    Void (spoilers)
A mysterious pony who has been collected DNA from Royal Knights. For tropes pertaining to him after his reveal as Shadow Corrupter, see the "The Cult of Shadow" folder.
  • Arch-Enemy: He seems to have a grudge against Royal Knights, especially Flash Sentry. His grudge toward Flash was revealed in The Movie, that Void is Shadow Corrupter and wants to get his revenge on Flash for what he did to him in the War of the Lost City arc.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With the Storm King in The Movie.
  • Canon Character All Along: Void initially appeared to be a new character to serve as the series' chief antagonist after Shadow Corrupter's death. The Movie later reveals that Void was Corrupter all along.
  • Co-Dragons: He's one of the main enforcers of the Storm King, along with Tempest Shadow and Armalum.
  • Cyborg: He’s partially mechanical, because of how he seems to be suffering from a mysterious illness.
  • Dramatic Unmask: He unmasks himself to Twilight, Flash, Heart, and Soul after capturing them, revealing that he is really Shadow Corrupter.
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: Upon his defeat, as he is consumed by Fire Heart's magic sphere, he snaps over how Flash Sentry is responsible for him losing everything and constantly getting in his way, screaming at Flash that even if he dies here his hatred for him will last an eternity. It also doubles as a Dying Curse, since he swears that someday Flash will be destroyed by his hatred for him, and even if it isn't by his hooves directly he will still ultimately be the reason for it, before finally being consumed by the explosion. Though this may be played with, since they all thought he died before as Shadow Corrupter.
  • Given Name Reveal: Its revealed in the Season 7 premiere that his name is Void.
  • He's Back!: Void regains his original name, Shadow Corrupter, after Armalum gives his Corrupted Shadow powers to him and thus, he's stronger and more powerful than ever.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: With the reveal that he is really a depowered Shadow Corrupter, he essentially does this to The Storm King. He manipulated The Storm King to let him create the Trials and send them after Flash, reasoning it would remove an obstacle from his way. He also makes it clear that once he has Flash's Sacred Light for himself, he will overthrow the Storm King and rule Equestria himself.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: He’s shown having a coughing fit after his benefactor contacts him about the latest shipment of weapons.
  • Mad Scientist: He created Mecha Flash, along with Mecha Heather, and other clones based off of the Royal Knights. It was to foreshadow that Void is Shadow Corrupter.
  • Meaningful Rename: After it is revealed he is Shadow Corrupter after he has been depowered, he explains he previously named himself after the power he wielded, the Corrupted Shadow, but now that it is gone he renamed himself after what he has become without it, a "Void" of his former self.
  • One-Winged Angel: Armalum sacrifices his Corrupted Shadow powers to Void after he was defeated by Flash and the others, which causes Void to essentially transform into a dark Alicorn.
  • Secretly Dying: It's heavily implied that he's dying, hence his coughing, which is why he needs Flash's Sacred Light to cure himself.
  • The Starscream: Void tells Flash that he intends to overthrow the Storm King once he's stolen his Sacred Light, which would make him unstoppable.
  • Villain Team-Up: He proposes one to The Pony of Shadows at the end of "Shadow Play Part 1", after seeing him in action and recognizing they have a common enemy in Flash Sentry. He proposes that if the Pony of Shadows can keep the others busy, Trial-C can defeat Flash and steal his Sacred Light, with The Pony of Shadows accepting.

  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He sports a disfigured scar on his face.
  • Kick the Dog: He slammed Fancy into the side of a building with his magic after he refused to obey him.
  • One-Winged Angel: His Phantom Beast form is this.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: He was one of Grand Hoof's best guards until his face was burned by a unicorn criminal with fire magic.

  • Villainous Face Hold: When he and his men take Rarity prisoner, he place a hoof under her chin while taunting her that when he kills her boyfriend Lightning he promises to make it slow and painful. Rarity just glares back at him in response.

    Halberd
A retired Royal Guard who aligned himself with Overthrow.
  • Asshole Victim: He didn’t survive the Phantom Magic chamber, but given he betrayed Equestria and sat on Twilight's throne, it's hard to feel bad for him.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He thinks he has what it takes to protect Equestria better than Twilight and her friends due to being a former Royal Guard, and finally get the guards the respect he feels they are deserved. But as soon as he is forced into the Phantom Magic gas chamber he shows his true cowardice, begging to wait and let him regain his strength first, and ultimately does not survive the process.
  • Big "NO!": He let one out when he was thrown into the Phantom Magic chamber.
  • Karmic Death: After he sold out on Equestria and spent most of his time sitting on Twilight's throne, Halberd was killed when he couldn’t survive the Phantom Magic chamber after Breaker want him to officially joins his group.
  • The Mole: He infiltrated the castle to allow Overthrow to invade the castle.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Mould Breaker allowed him to join Overthrow without the usual trial since he would act as The Mole and allow them to enter the castle. But once they basically take over the castle that role is no longer needed, and since he has no use for someone who hasn't proven themselves he forces Halberd into the new Phantom Magic gas chamber. If he survived he'd be allowed to officially join, but when he doesn't Breaker just brushes his death off as him being too weak.
