Gravity Falls

Pines Family

    Dipper Pines

Dipper Pines

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reunion_falls_dipper_pines.png

A curious, clever, and inventive 12-year-old who's been trying to uncover the secrets of Gravity Falls his whole life. He's Luz's closest friend on Earth as well as her stepbrother.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Dipper was given up his parents since they weren't expecting twins, so he was placed under Stan's care and grew up in Gravity Falls. He would later learn that Eda was legally married to Stan, thus giving him a stepsister in Luz who occasionally visits and joins in on his adventures.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted to "Little Brother Instinct". He cares a lot about Luz, his older sister. So much so that he asks Bill Cipher to pass mental messages to her. After Bill's true colors are revealed, Dipper can't stop worrying about Luz's safety, not to mention Mabel's after what Bill did to her.
  • Happily Adopted: Being adopted by Stan when he was a baby, Dipper grew up as if he were actually Stan's kid.
  • Official Couple: In "Chapter 113: A Long Overdue Reunion", he works up the nerve to ask Candy to be his girlfriend and she says yes.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Downplayed. Stan struggled with raising Dipper, but he did his best and Dipper had Soos and Wendy by his side along with Luz popping in from time to time.
  • Transplant: He may have been the protagonist of his own series, but this version of him is from Reunion Falls.

    Mabel Pines

Mabel Pines

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reunion_falls_mabel_pines.png

Dipper's quirky, creative, energetic, and optimistic twin sister, Mabel came to Gravity Falls to meet her estranged brother, hoping to make the best out of every situation with a big smile.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: Mabel had been straight but Ambiguously Bi due to constantly calling her friends beautiful. Here she actually comes out as bi (while being encouraged not to label her orientation) after developing a mutual crush on Pacifica.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Much like canon, a guy she has a crush on (Gus) doesn't return her affections.
  • Foil: To Clara Gates regarding their relationships with Luz. Both girls hoped to bond with Luz as she's the closest they have to a sister but as their first outings with her show, they had different experiences in that regard: Mabel and her friends dragged Luz around all day and forced her to participate in stereotypical girl activities without asking what she wanted to do, while Clara and her friends let Luz take the lead and show them her unique brand of fun. Mabel's actions led to Luz telling her off for not listening to her and forcing a bond between them, yet Clara was concerned that Luz wouldn't find her interesting due to how mundane her life is compared to hers. In the end, both girls found a way to bond with her by accepting her and the trouble that follows her.
  • Official Couple: In "Chapter 84: Northwest Party Crashers", Mabel manages to hook up with Pacifica. Sadly, the girls end up in a long-distance relationship after Dipper and Mabel's parents take her home four chapters later.
  • A Scar to Remember: As a reminder of Bill's possession, Mabel is left with a scar shaped like his eye on her left hand.
  • Transplant: The deuteragonist of her series, this version of her originates from Reunion Falls.

    Grunkle Stan

Grunkle Stanley "Stan" Pines

Also known as Great-Uncle Stan and Grunkle Stan, he's Mabel and Dipper's humorous, sly, money-loving great-uncle as well as Dipper's legal guardian, Eda's ex-husband and Luz & King's legal stepfather. He runs the Mystery Shack, a tourist trap full of questionable oddities.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Stan had to take in Dipper when he was a baby due to his parents being unable to raise two kids.
  • Parental Substitute: He serves as Dipper's guardian after his parents send him to live with Stan. Luz also sees him as the closest thing she's ever had to a father.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: "Chapter 86: Closing the Gates" has Stan being taken to jail for his numerous crimes, including nearly destroying all of reality by using Ford's portal to bring him back to Earth. In spite of this, Luz believes Stan will come back.
  • Transplant: He was the tritagonist of the show, yet this version of him comes from Reunion Falls.

    Grunkle Ford

Stanford "Ford" Pines

A human scientist who's been traveling across the multiverse for years, he's Stan's twin brother. He's the writer of Journal #3, currently in Dipper and Mabel's possession.
  • Amicable Exes: Averted. He was once in a relationship with Lilith and though they had so much in common, Ford's suspicions of Emperor Belos caused him to leave the demon realm. When he asked Lilith to join him, she refuses believing Belos won't cure Eda if she abandons him, so Ford knocked her out with a potion before escaping.
  • Connected All Along: Chapter 108 reveals that during his time in the Demon Realm, Ford was friends and partners with Staggertarious, the Potions Coven Head before Weevil Vitimir.
  • Dimensional Traveler: He's currently one of these, and visited the Boiling Isles years ago.
  • Parental Substitute: After Stan is arrested, Ford has to take legal guardianship over Dipper due to Stan adopting him under his name. Because of Luz threatening him, Ford has to take his responsibility as this seriously and soon starts to bond with Dipper.

Civilians

    Wendy Corduroy

Wendy Corduroy

A teenager who works at the Mystery Shack as a part-time job. She often accompanies Dipper and Mabel on their adventures. Dipper had a crush on her when he was younger and so did Luz.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Because the Mystery Shack shuts down after Stan gets arrested, Wendy starts working at the Gravity Falls music store thanks to Tambry having a friend hook her up.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: Implied to have learned responsibility by the time of "No Big Deal", as she acts as a voice of reason to Mabel, and recommended her to go see a therapist. She also does not suffer from holding the Jerkass Ball during the events of "The Love God".
  • Closet Key: Wendy was Luz's first crush to be a girl, thus being how Luz discovered she was bisexual.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Chapter 97: Those Gravity Falls Kids" focues on exploring her past with the Pines family and her aiding Tyler Cutebiker in becoming mayor.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Not only is Wendy still a Dude Magnet, Luz had a crush on her when she was younger and Star was attracted to her biceps.

    Candy and Grenda

Candy Chiu & Grenda Grendinator

Mabel's friends who tag along on with her and Dipper on their mystery solving adventures as one of Mabel's conditions for letting Dipper use the journal.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Grenda still hooks up with Marius Von Fundhauser while Candy develops a crush on Dipper.
  • Official Couple: In "A Long Overdue Reunion", Candy is floored by Dipper asking her out and soon agrees to it.

    Pacifica Northwest

Pacifica Northwest

Daughter of the Northwests, the richest family in Gravity Falls and the descendants of the alleged town founder. Mabel managed to befriend her and she started hanging out with the Pines twins after Pioneer Day.
  • Official Couple: In "Chapter 84: Northwest Party Crashers", Pacifica gets together with Mabel. Sadly, the girls end up in a long-distance relationship after Dipper and Mabel's parents take her home four chapters later.

    Robbie Valentino

Robbie Valentino

Wendy's ex-boyfriend until they broke up on good terms after Robbie was rescued from the Blind Eye Society, which caused Robbie to decide to leave Gravity Falls since he couldn't handle the town's weirdness anymore.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Robbie dates Wendy until they break up and he later gets together with Tambry.

    Vee

Vee / Basilisk #5

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_vee_updated.png
Click to see her as of "Those Gravity Falls Kids"

A young basilisk who was brought back to life, she escaped the Demon Realm with Luz and Eda's help and befriended the Pines family, becoming the fifth member of Mabel's friend group.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Vee ended up on Earth under different circumstances; she tried to steal the portal key, but Luz and Eda chose to help her and decided to send her to Gravity Falls where she could maintain a human form by feeding off its magic, particularly from the various magical artifacts found in the town.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Vee was implied to be Ambiguously Gay due to her crush on the non-binary and feminine-presenting Masha in canon. Here's she's confirmed to be a lesbian who develops feelings for Star Butterfly.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Some of her relationships from The Owl House are heavily altered.
    • Season 2 had her develop a familial bond with Camila and she was accepted as her foster daughter while becoming Luz's sister during the Time Skip. Here, she's not as close with either of them.
    • She becomes much closer friends with Amity after she has to hide out on Earth following her outing as a Fae, and during that time Amity helps her boost her confidence in talking to girls.
  • Adaptational Romance Downgrade: "Thanks to Them" implied that Vee had a crush on Masha and it was confirmed in the final Post-Hoot livestream. Here they're Just Friends due to having different love interests.
  • Big Eater: She is a big fan of eating, mainly attending the Northwest party in "Northwest Party Crashers" for the free food and being shown eating something in every scene at the party.
  • Chick Magnet: A surprisingly unexpected case. Masha considers her attractive and had a brief crush on her, and all the girls she befriended during the road trip argue over the chance to date her upon learning her true identity.
  • Commonality Connection: In "Starcrossed", her experience with revealing her true self to her road trip friends helps her bond with Cross and nudge him into being more open about telling his friends about his dragon heritage.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Being a Cute Monster Girl has led to people (mostly girls her age) constantly calling her adorable.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: If her status as a Chick Magnet is anything to go off of, this has been true ever since she changed her hair color to blonde.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Downplayed. In Chapter 97, she decides to change her hair but settles for keeping her long hair, just changing the color to blonde with blue tips.
  • Gamer Chick: "Northwest Party Crashers" shows that she became a fan of "Fight Fighters" when Soos introduced her to the game.
  • Genki Girl: She gets really invested in FCLORP after she's introduced to it by Blubs and Durland and she considers it the greatest recreational activity ever.
  • Grew a Spine: All of her adventures and experiences in the Human Realm give her enough confidence to return to the Demon Realm initially to ask Star out, but she soon stands up to Draco as part of her effort to convince her basilisk siblings to come live with her on Earth.
  • Happily Adopted: "No Big Deal" reveals that she found a home after all with Blubs and Durland.
  • Hero of Another Story: While the story focuses on the Boiling Isles most of the time, Vee has been having her own adventures with her new friends in Gravity Falls.
  • Interspecies Romance: She develops a crush on Star, a Mewman, and eventually asks her out.
  • Mythology Gag: Vee's human disguise here is based off Wendy's design in the Gravity Falls pilot.
  • Odd Friendship: She tends to befriend total hardasses like Mr. Poolcheck or distant badasses like Star.
  • Rescue Romance: While she admits it's cliché, Vee confesses that she fell for Star after she and Lilith saved her from being dissected by Victor Frankenstein in "Fallen Angel", calling Star her hero.
  • Running Gag: People constantly call her adorable for a basilisk.
  • Ship Tease: With Star Butterfly of all people. She lampshades their Odd Friendship should make a romance between them impossible in "Road to Redwood Highway", but admits that they work well together.
  • Sixth Ranger: Becomes this to the Pines twins and their friends, and later the Gatesfield teens to some degree.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Zigzagged. While the Greater Basilisk is still antagonistic and Number 6 worked with the Tarot Guild against his will, Numbers One and Three are later revealed to have joined the rebellion against Emperor Belos, though Number Three is understandably more hostile toward Lilith because of her involvement in the Basilisk Revival Program.

    Blubs and Durland

Sheriff Daryl Blubs and Deputy Edwin Durland

The law of Gravity Falls, who Luz has had a few run-ins with over the years. After learning that Vee is homeless, they decide to help her and they ultimately let her live with them.
  • Ascended Extra: Blubs and Durland didn't appear in Reunion Falls, so they're given a chance to shine here on occasion.
  • Open-Minded Parent: While they were initially surprised with learning who and what Vee really was, they don't care about it afterward, they love her very much and are very accepting of her.
  • Papa Wolf: They both won't hesitate to kick some ass if Vee's in danger.
  • Parental Substitute: They become Vee's fathers after deciding to take her in.

    Mr. Poolcheck

Ian Poolcheck

The emotionally unstable head lifeguard of the Gravity Falls pool.
  • Ascended Extra: While Ian had one episode of prominence in Gravity Falls before becoming a Recurring Extra for the rest of the series, here he has more of a presence and even becomes someone's potential Love Interest.
  • Named by the Adaptation: He had no known first name in Gravity Falls.
  • Odd Friendship: Has a small one with Vee, who's actually gotten used to his intensity.
  • Ship Tease: Upon meeting Nora Gordon, he starts to have some with her.

    Agents Powers and Trigger

Powers and Trigger

Two government agents investigating the town's various oddities, they soon butt heads with Department A when Director Gates barges in on their operation.
  • One-Steve Limit: Agent Trigger, whose first name is Jeff, shares it with the leader of the gnomes as well as the Huntsman.

Norrisville

    Randy Cunningham

Randy Cunningham, the Ninja

A 15-ish year old boy who's served as Norrisville's Ninja hero for two years. Following two failed confrontations with Jenny Porter, he sought outside help in detaining her and finds himself wondering if he's getting involved in something bigger.
  • Adaptational Explanation: The RC9N episode "Secret Stache" reveals that Randy has natural purple hair and here in the LCU, it's explained as being genetically due to one of his parents having blue hair and the other being a redhead.
  • Homosexual Reproduction: "A Long Overdue Reunion" shows that he has two mothers named Ruby and Sapphire.

    Howard Weinerman

Howard Weinerman

Randy's best friend, who tends to cover for him while he's engaging in Ninja heroics.

Los Angeles

    Terri

Terri

A rising scientist who is introduced working for Dr. Frakes but when Frakes kidnaps Gus (who was trying to find a way home) in Las Vegas, they turn on her to save the kid.

Gatesfield, Connecticut

WARNING: Each of these characters is a Walking Spoiler. All spoilers in their folders are unmarked.
    In General
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: The town wasn't seen at the beginning of the series due to Camila and Luz moving away. It was first seen in a flashback in "Socket to Me"note , before formally debuted in the series's take of "Yesterday's Lie", "Escape from Gatesfield".
  • Adaptation Name Change: The town of Gravesfield has been renamed after the Gates family, who run the town after taking it over.
  • Alternate Self: The entire town has one in the universe where Abigail took in Luz.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Somehow on an even greater scope than Gravesfield had been in The Owl House; nearly everyone in the town's community is a judgemental hypocrite who wouldn't bother with helping people when they need it, talk about said people behind their backs yet still act friendly with them, and avoiding their own problems while continuing to supress those that stray from the status quo.
  • Hypocrite: The town's population are considered to be these by Clara, as they hope those with traumatic experiences get better but they still talk about said people behind their backs.
  • Stepford Smiler: Also according to Clara, everybody usually hides who they truly are behind insincere smiles.

    G.B. Gates

Gabriel Belmont Gates

The author of the book, "The War Against Witchcraft", and the ancestor of the Gates family. The town of Gravesfield was renamed Gatesfield after him.
  • Ambiguous Situation: His final fate was unknown, and Word of God confirms he visited the Boiling Isles at some point, but how he got there and why was a mystery. Chapter 87 would remove the ambiguity by revealing he made the mistake of crossing Philip Clawthorne.
  • Connected All Along: "Let's Dip Into the Time Pool Again" reveals that he was a part of Philip's expedition.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: His actions towards the inhabitants of the Demon Realm would factor in to Philip becoming Emperor Belos and continuing to change the alleged fate of the Isles.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Gabriel took advantage of Philip's trusting nature in order to set fire to his hometown, shoot his boyfriend dead, steal his portal key, and burn down his family home with his parents, sister-in-law, and his brother's children inside. Philip pays him back in full by dropping him down the Titan's skull, the impact of the fall doing him in.
  • Minor Major Character: He's a witch hunter whose descendants grew to carry on his legacy of hunting down and eliminating witchkind. His actions would also be the reason why Belos developed a hatred towards humanity.
  • Posthumous Character: Probably died an undisclosed number of years before the present day.
  • Predecessor Villain: He serves as this to the three most recent Director Gates, the current one being Angel, who had married into the family.
  • Villainous Legacy: His descendants run the town of Gatesville and Abigail seems to be following in his footsteps.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was friends with Philip during his trip to the Boiling Isles. However, it's subverted since it wasn't real; Gabriel didn't hesitate to kill witches to steal Philip's portal door, including Philip's boyfriend Adam.
  • The Witch Hunter: Given the fact that Boscha found passages about witch hunts in their book, he's definitely implied to be this. This ends up being confirmed in Chapter 58.

    Angel Sinclair

Angelica "Angel" Sinclair-Gates

A teenage girl that Eda befriended during her first visit to the human realm who has borderline personality disorder. After being killed by the Owl Beast and resurrected, she grew up to become the current Director Gates and thus The Leader of Department A, otherwise known as the "Archangels", an organization that is trying to access the Demon Realm.
  • Accidental Murder: While she was fighting Abigail, the Owl Beast mixed the girls up and mauled Angel which led to her death.
  • An Arm and a Leg: The Owl Beast had torn off her arm while mauling her. When she was revived, she was given a robotic replacement.
  • Anonymous Benefactor: To the Blind Eye Society. Following the epilogue to Book One, she's no longer anonymous.
  • Arc Villainess: She turns out to be the current Director Gates, making her the main antagonist of the Earth side of the "Human Realm" Arc.
  • Back from the Dead: Word of God confirms that Eda really did kill her, yet she was brought back to life at some point. Chapter 85 shows that Isaac and her mother had Victor Frankenstein bring her back to life.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: She's in this category because she's in league with the Blind Eye Society, Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Frakes. She leads all of them and runs Department A, an organization dedicated to wiping out not just witchkind, but all magical beings.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: They might as well have. Being brought back to life and given a cyborg arm is symbolic to how Angel's been corrupted by the Gates family.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was expected to be a perfect little girl who could do no wrong and that eventually led to her crumbling under the pressure. Her resulting freakouts actually got her labeled as a freak. Even her own mother failed to understand how she came to that point.
  • Death of a Child: Her supposed Accidental Murder at the age of 14 left a great deal of emotional pain in both Eda and Abigail.
  • Eye Scream: The Owl Beast also tore out her eye, which would be replaced somehow by Victor Frankenstein.
  • Freak Out: Everyone in town knows her for having these, as she got very emotional and would act out from stress.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: As the head of Department A, she's responsible for the cutthroat actions of Dr. Frakes and Michael.
  • Hearing Voices: "The Glandus War: Turning Point" reveals she heard that of the Horned King, and it scared her enough to demand for Eda to take her back to the Human Realm.
  • Ironic Name: She is nowhere near close to her namesake. In the past, she rebelled because people expected her to be a model citizen. In present day, she's a ruthless murderer who's striving to wipe out all of magic kind.
  • Minor Major Character: Angel's death has left a great deal of pain on both Eda and Abigail. This is subverted when it is revealed that she is alive in the present day.
  • Mood-Swinger: She admits to having these, being emotionally unstable.
  • Only Friend: It works both ways with Eda: Angel saw her as this while Eda had cut off contact with her family and Raine, Angel being her only human friend as a kid.
  • Posthumous Character: Eda killed her while in her Owl Beast form 30 years ago. Tragically subverted when it is revealed that she is alive in the present day.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: She acts like a rebel because everyone in Gatesfield sees her as a lost cause, which is why she was so eager to leave for the Demon Realm with Eda.
  • Technically-Living Zombie: She was brought back to life by Dr. Frankenstein shortly after her death, so she retains no visible body damage outside of her missing arm.
  • Villain in a White Suit: Yup, Director Gates sports a white suit and definitely shows signs of qualifying as a villain.
  • Villainous Legacy: She is not the first Director Gates.
  • Witch Hunter: A modern example created by Isaac and his connections.

    The Gates Siblings

Abigail and Joseph Gates

Two siblings who are the descendants of Gabriel Gates. Joseph succeeded his father as director of their organization and he held the title until his death, being succeeded by Angel Sinclair, his wife. Abigail on the other hand suffers from emotional baggage as a result of having seen Angel killed in front of her, only to appear crazy when Angel's death and resurrection get covered up.
General
  • Jerkass: They're the ones who reveled in mocking Angel for her disorder the most. In her words, they treat her like she's possessed.

Tropes related to Abigail Gates

  • Affectionate Nickname: Invoked with "Gail", which she tells Camila to call her when they first met, but played straight with "Abby", which Luz uses.
  • Amicable Exes: Subverted. She dated the Huntsman during her training days, but now she loathes him for continuing her family's mission to eradicate all magical creatures.
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Her brother died in an explosion fourteen years prior; it ended up affecting her to the point of attempting suicide.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Her marriage with Frank has shades of this, and considering she's in the closet...
  • Badass Normal: Despite not possessing magic and being a normal human, she still remembers her Huntsclan training and can put it to good use.
  • Connected All Along: "Chapter 69: That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" not only reveals that she was friends with Camila, but that Camila asked her to be Luz's godmother, a revelation that horrifies Luz since she thinks that Abigail is a witch hunter.
  • Fantastic Racism: As a child, she didn't see Eda as a person and was fine with her being "put down". Subverted as an adult since while she still hates Eda, it has nothing to do with her being a witch.
  • Good All Along: While she was a bully who embraced her family's teachings in her youth, it is eventually revealed that as an adult she decided to not become a witch hunter like the rest of her family, despite several characters suspecting otherwise.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Implied according to Word of God. Abigail may have been suspicious of Eda when she first met her and saw her hanging around with Angel, and not because she had learned she was a witch. With how vehement Abigail has been about her hatred of Eda ever since Angel's death, it's looking like Abigail had loved Angel, the old version of her.
  • Heel–Face Turn: During the Equinox Hunt and her final test to join the Huntsclan, Abigail couldn't bring herself to kill a unicorn and was surprised to see it comfort her while she was breaking down. Following this, she would come to realize the sadistic nature of her family and swear off following their legacy of hatred against magickind and witches... mostly.
  • In-Series Nickname: Self-invoked, she tells Camila to call her "Gail" when they first meet, and Camila calls her that years later after her resurrection.
  • Jerkass to One: While Abigail may no longer share her family's hatred of witches, she still loathes Eda and punches her in the face when she tries to talk to her. If anything, Abigail hates Eda even more now upon learning that she is Luz's mother, believing that Eda took Luz (her goddaughter) away from her.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Abigail is stunned not just by the Nocedas being alive and Eda raising Luz, but by how Angel had known the truth about Luz living in the Demon Realm for years and never told her.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: After returning home following her expulsion from the Huntsclan, Abigail was ostracized by her family and the rest of Gatesfield after failing to convince people that Angel had died and was resurrected. In the present, many had believed she was a witch hunter but the reality is that she saw the truth about magical creatures not being a threat to humans and shed her hatred toward magic...that is except for Eda, but she would start finding a compromise with her later on.
  • Red Herring: "Northwest Party Crashers" reveals that Angel's the current Director Gates, thus Abigail was this all along.
  • Revenge: After Eda (as the Owl Beast) killed Angel, Abigail vowed to make her pay for what she did. It's later revealed that she couldn't live up to that promise.
  • White Sheep: She and her daughter Clara are this to the Gates family.
  • Witch Hunter: Subverted. Several characters suspect Abigail of being a witch hunter while others argue that she's not, and the latter is eventually confirmed.

Tropes related to Joseph

  • Character Death: He died in a fire caused by an explosion, the same fire that killed Manny.
  • Minor Major Character: He only appears in flashbacks but has been at the core of several events in Gatesfield. His bullying Angel alongside his sister led to Angel escaping to the Demon Realm with Eda and her subsequent death when Abigail brought in their father to kill Eda. His death in Department A dealt a serious blow to Abigail and allowed his wife, the resurrected Angel, to succeed him.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His death allowed his wife to succeed him as Director Gates.

    Isaac Gates
Abigail and Joseph's father and the "Director Gates" before the latter. He's responsible for Angel eventually continuing the family's crusade by reviving her after a premature death and covering it up.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: He revived Angel and forced Abigail to stop telling people about her death, with him and his wife getting Abigail labeled as insane while eventually having Angel marry Joseph. In Chapter 109, Abigail reveals to Eda that she killed Isaac and her mother as revenge for all of the suffering they inflicted on her and Angel.

    Jacob Hopkins

Jacob Hopkins

A Conspiracy Theorist who as a young boy who mistook Eda for a Martian. In present day, he runs the Gatesfield Historical Society but is in league with Department A.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Jacob appears as a kid during a flashback set during the events on "Eda's Requiem", when his present day adult self doesn't appear until "Yesterday's Lie".
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appeared briefly in a flashback about Eda's first visit to Earth.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In "Escape from Gatesfield", he kept Willow locked in a cage for Department A and received a swift butt-kicking from the Gatesfield teens, who gave him the same punishment.
  • Trapped in Another World: "Resolutions" reveals he was the volunteer who went to the Boiling Isles in "Fallen Angel", and he'd been stuck there for about a week trying to wait out his predicament until Director Gates brought him back.

    Clara

Clara Gates

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_clara_gates.png

Abigail's young teenage daughter who's aware of her mother's fragile mental state and tries to help her. Tired of being perfect, she finds herself joining other like-minded kids her age to help Willow escape from her family's organization.

  • Adaptational Late Appearance: In canon, she appeared in the series premiere. Here, she isn't introduced until just before the story's reached "Eclipse Lake".
  • Affectionate Nickname: Masha starts calling her "Sarah Connor" for having the guts to beat somebody up.
  • AM/FM Characterization: "Chapter 91: Fairly God-Witches" shows her to be a fan of pop music, listening to Maroon 5, Selena Gomez and Big Time Rush, thus showcasing her as a typical preppy girl following the latest stars. On the other hand, she has a strong connection to "Blackbird" by Paul McCartney, which symbolized her desire to be free from her dull life in Gatesfield, which she gains from traveling with her friends.
  • Ascended Extra: She's an unnamed background character in the series, but she's one of the stars in her second appearance before becoming part of the second-tier human cast.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Among the three kids who lost a relative in the Department A explosion. While Luz and Gus G. were both born before the accident, Clara was born sometime afterward.
  • Berserk Button: Bring up her mother's suicide attempt like it's a joke and you'll experience a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: She's the blonde to Masha's black and Dana's redhead.
  • Coming-Out Story: As time passed, Clara started to develop an attraction towards Masha and sees that she never like guys that way, so she comes out as a lesbian to her mother in "Those Gravity Falls Kids". It's later called into question again when Masha comes out as non-binary themselves, so Clara declares she'll figure her orientation out in time with them.
  • Crush Blush: Once she gets a crush on Masha, she'll occasionally blush whenever they have a pseudo-romantic moment.
  • Everyone Can See It:
    • Her jealousy towards Vee is eventually discovered by Gus G. in "Those Gravity Falls Kids", and he becomes the first person to figure out Clara's crushing on Masha.
    • In Chapter 108, Amity outright tells her she figured out her crush on the goth due to her own experiences with crushes.
  • Foil: To Mabel regarding their relationships with Luz. In the end, both girls found a way to get along with her by accepting her and the trouble that follows her.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: After meeting Vee and seeing Masha's interest in her abilities, Clara quickly starts to get jealous of the basilisk and how they get along. This jealousy disappears once Clara learns that Vee doesn't like Masha as anything more than a friend.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Unlike the rest of her family who are all brunettes with black hair, Clara is a blonde which hints at her being more compassionate than the rest of her family and is proven when she and her friends help Willow escape Department A's clutches.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Clara is sick of the life she had in Gatesfield and wants to be free of it, a wish she eventually gets helping Willow return home.
  • Mirror Character: She's one to Amity; both girls grew up having to conform to the perfect image their family had, burying their true personalities deep down, having to be friends with people because of their parents. However while Amity had always feared stepping out of line against her parents or fake friends should someone she cares about be insulted by them until she met Luz, Clara blows up in public and attacks one of her so-called friends for insulting her mother before befriending Masha.
  • Named by the Adaptation: She doesn't have an canonical name, so she's christened with the popular fan name she's always given.
  • No Name Given: She's the blonde doppelganger of Amity, but she wasn't named in her debut.
  • Odd Friendship: She's a cheerleader who gets along with goth girl Masha over their mutual dissatisfaction over how things are in Gatesfield.
  • Official Couple: Masha asks her out in "A Long Overdue Reunion" while they're alone together, much to her happiness.
  • The Paladin: In "Fairly God-Witches", Masha labels her as this during the mission to save Dipper and Ford, and Clara ends up being outfitted with paladin armor and a sword in the battle royale against Probabilitor.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Since Abigail Gates is Luz's godmother, this means she's Luz's godsister.
  • The Runaway: She's hesitant at first about just leaving her parents to help a bunch of kids she's only been around for a few hours and a witch she just met, but agrees to leave, determined to see it through.
  • Ship Tease: Starting in "The Long, the Witch, and the Ninja", Clara starts to show signs of having feelings for Masha, blushing around her and being jealous of her friendship with Vee.
  • White Sheep: She and her mother are this to the Gates family.

    Masha

Masha/Marsha Moore

A goth who had struggled with their identity, they run away from home when their parents disapprove of their occult interests and joins their friends, as well as Clara and the Gordon family, in helping Willow return home. They would eventually come out as non-binary in their following adventures.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Masha hadn't come out when they debut, so people (usually their parents) called them by their birth name, "Marsha".
  • AM/FM Characterization: Both their nerdy and edgy sides are made clear by their interests in pop rock, metal, alternate rock/metal, and J-pop music.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: They're actually the black to Clara's blonde and Dana's redhead.
  • Closet Key: Clara develops a crush on them before they came out, which leads to her coming out as a lesbian.
  • Coming-Out Story: Masha had never felt comfortable being known as female, but after meeting Vee and learning howbasilisks can change genders, they felt being male didn't suit her, either. Eventually, they settle on being non-binary in Chapter 138: "Closing the Rift".
  • The Nicknamer: They often give people nicknames, such as calling Rudo "Rudy", Clara "Sarah Connor", and Willow "Poison Ivy".
  • Has a Type: Masha mentions in Chapter 97 that they like blondes after seeing Vee with her new hair color, implying they likes both Vee and Clara.
  • Hidden Depths: "Fairly God-Witches" highlights their musical tastes, those being BABYMETAL, Coldplay, and Lemon Demon.
  • Odd Friendship: Downplayed as even though they're a goth who strikes up a bond with cheerleader Clara, they sympathizes with her disdain of life in their hometown.
  • Official Couple: In Chapter 113, they take Clara by surprise by asking her out, admitting they had feelings for her for some time.
  • The Runaway: Masha and their friends have no issues with leaving their parents when leaving Gatesfield; in their case, it's because their parents threw away all their occult belongings before they left their house to investigate the Historical Society.

    Dana and Rudo

Dana Underwood and Rudo Stewart

Masha's friends who enjoy their company and support their interests. Both are always more than willing to stick by their side.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Dana acts as the redhead to Clara's blonde and Masha's black.
  • Blood Knight: Dana tends to encourage violence, either by getting in on the action or demanding her friends hit harder when fighting.
  • Camera Fiend: Rudo tends to contribute most when he gets a camera in his hands. He thinks to take pictures of what the Gatesfield teens find in the Gatesfield Historical Society and provides them to Powers and Trigger. Later, he uses a news camera to catch Preston in an Engineered Public Confession so he doesn't become mayor of Gravity Falls and is arrested for assaulting his daughter.
  • In-Series Nickname: Masha tends to call Rudo "Rudy".
  • Named After Somebody Famous: A meta case; Dana is named after Dana Terrace, creator of The Owl House.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Unlike Masha, both of them don't have confirmed names in the main series.
  • The Runaway: They also don't have any issues with leaving their families to help Willow implying that like Masha, they also aren't on good terms with their parents.

    Gus G.

Augustus "Gus" Gordon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_gus_gordon.png

A musically-inclined boy with dreams of touring the world. Curious about what happened to his father when he worked with Department A, he investigates and finds himself joining Clara, Masha, Dana and Rudo in rescuing Willow.

  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Luz starts calling him "Double G" to differentiate him from witch Gus in Chapter 91. Vee uses the same nickname in Chapter 112.
    • All of Luz's friends take to calling him different names combined with the number two. He settles on Gus-Two after Amelia calls him that in "The Errands in the Willows".
  • Alliterative Name: Gus Gordon.
  • Alternate Self: Word of God sees him as one for the werecat, Casey Whiskabee.
  • AM/FM Characterization: While Gus is a music fan who slowly establishes himself as someone who enjoys rock in general (due to his interest in Iron Weasel), he leans toward alternate rock due to his liking Gorillaz and Panic! at the Disco, showing he's rebelling but doesn't go overboard about it. In "Fairly God-Witches", he shows himself to be a fan of Green Day, thus proving he likes punk rock as well.
  • Ascended Extra: The Gus from the Human Realm that Luz mentions knowing in "I Was a Teenage Abomination"? Yeah, this is a take on the kid donated to the story for a "Submit Your OC" contest.
  • Big Damn Heroes Moment: He narrowly saves his mom from being petrified by an Eye-Bat in Chapter 136: "It's Gonna Get Weird". However, this leads to him getting captured himself.
  • Commonality Connection: He's surprised to learn that he and Willow have both been bullied by a Girl Posse in "Closing the Gates".
  • Disappeared Dad: His father died in the same accident that took Manny and Joseph's lives, and he struggles to talk about it.
  • Foil: To Cross of all people. They were both introduced in the "Human Realm" arc, yet while Cross wasn't of much importance when he debuted, Gus G. was a major supporting player in helping Willow return home. Afterward, the boys ended up with Swapped Roles; bit by bit, Gus would become a bit more Out of Focus as Book 2 continued on while Cross gets sucked into other people's drama and receive some of his own, eventually becoming a main character.
  • Goal in Life: Gus dreams of being a musician and traveling beyond Gatesfield, not wanting to go his entire life stuck in the so-called "perfect little town". He's able to experience the latter when he, his mother and the other Gatesfield teens escape with Willow and begin traveling to New York City at his suggestion.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He's got dirty blonde hair and didn't hesitate to help a kid he just met find a way to return home, regardless of the danger.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He has a diverse range and interest in multiple music genres based on his preferences to Iron Weasel, Gorillaz, Panic! at the Disco, and Green Day.
    • "Closing the Gates" shows that he appreciates old-school special effects and stunts in movies rather than CGI.
    • He mentions in the "Intro Sequence Contest" that he plays three types of guitar, including electric. This becomes canon to the story in "Fairly God-Witches".
  • I Just Want to Be Free: He refuses to stay in Gatesfield his entire life, which is why he's so determined to travel and is happy to suggest where to go when the group of kids and his mother leave town.
  • Incompatible Orientation: He admits to having a small thing for Vee in Chapter 112 since he calls her cute. Sadly, he learns from Dipper that Vee's a lesbian, so he's quick to move on and avoid falling any harder for her.
  • Magic Music: Masha likens him to a bard during the DD&D mission in "Fairly God-Witches"; as such when the kids are forced into a game against Probabilitor, he's given instruments to use as weapons (starts off with a harp, gains a thunder guitar when Camila changes his instrument.)
  • Mirror Character:
    • He holds a few similarities to Robbie; they're both musicians hoping to leave their hometowns and get their name out there, yet while Robbie is old enough to and has already done so, Gus is still too young to do it himself but still gets the opportunity.
    • He can also be seen as one to Luz: they're both fourteen-year-olds who lost their fathers in the same accident, also share an interest in music, and they both want to live their lives without being restrained or limited on what they want to do with them. The obvious difference between them is that Luz has a massive amount of trauma that Gus will never have to experience.
    • He's also one to the werecat Casey Whiskabee*. Like with Robbie, both are talented musicians who specialize in guitar, with these two also being dissatisfied with their home lives and wanting to escape them. Both have also been attracted to lesbians (Casey had a crush on Nina and was shot down when he tried to kiss her, Gus briefly had an attraction to Vee but was told of her orientation before he could develop deeper feelings for her.)
  • One-Steve Limit: He shares both his name and nickname with Gus Porter, and he is quick to point it out when Willow mentions her friend.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Most people call him Gus; his mother tends to use his full name and has to be reminded that he prefers his nickname.
  • The Rockstar: His Goal in Life is to become one and seeing as he can play guitar and sing, he's on his way.
  • Ship Tease: Chapters 108 and 109 hint that he's going to have some with Amelia, especially considering they share a dance at Luz & Amity's faux wedding reception.
  • Two First Names: Gordon is usually used as a first name.

    Nora

Leonora "Nora" Gordon

Gus G.'s mother and Superintendent of Gatesfield's school district. She's often busy with her job and prods her son into finding a practical career, but will help him if he needs it.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a blonde as well, and more compassionate than any other adult in Gatesfield.
  • Hidden Depths: As "Those Gravity Falls Kids" shows, she knows how to fight thanks to learning some of her militant father's combat techniques.
  • Meaningful Name: In Greek, "Leonora" means "compassionate", which hints at Nora's more sympathetic nature before she aides the Gatesfield teens in getting Willow to safety. Her name also means "light", a similarity she shares with Luz.
  • Not So Above It All: She takes a lot of enjoyment out of punching Preston in the face for trying to kill Dipper, which she lampshades.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Unlike the rest of the parental units in Gatesfield, Nora instantly accepts the existence of magic when Willow confirms she's a witch and agrees to help her son and his acquaintances with getting her out of town. However, she's still slow to accept all the craziness which leads to Abigail helping her understand everything about magic.
  • Parental Neglect: An unintended case at first. As Gus G. points out, part of the reason they don't talk as much as they used to is because she works too much. This is slowly subverted throughout their journey to help Willow, and the former Gatesfieldians' stay in Gravity Falls.
  • Ship Tease: "Those Gravity Falls Kids" hints at something starting to develop between herself and Mr. Poolcheck.
  • Team Mom: She watches over her son, Willow, and the rest of the teens as they journey to find Willow a way home.
  • Token Adult: She acts as the only adult among the Gatesfield teens and their temporary guardian during their journey, at least until Jake joins the group after their adventure in New York.
  • Two First Names: Gordon is a typical first name.

    Frank Gates

Frank Gates

Abigail's husband and Clara's father.
  • Awful Wedded Life: He married into the family and has marital problems with Abigail, but denies even having them.

    Jordan, Cree, and Pigtails

Jordan, Cree, and Pigtails

Clara's friends, who she doesn't consider as such.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Cree has tan skin but her ethnicity isn't brought up.
  • Gang of Bullies: "Closing the Gates" reveals they used to bully Gus G. over his dream of being a musician and his taste in music.
  • Girl Posse: They all make up this dynamic with Clara, not that she likes it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jordan insults Abigail in retribution for Clara ignoring her and their friends, and she's subjected to a bloody beating at Clara's hands.
  • Mirror Character: To the former Banshees before their development: all of them play into the typical "mean girl" group, with Jordan acting out to Clara the same way Boscha did with Amity.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The honey-blonde girl and tan girl with braided hair are respectively dubbed Jordan and Cree.
  • No Name Given: Pigtails doesn't have her real name mentioned.
  • Social Circle Filler: All three of them hang around Clara for one scene to show how much she despises how things are in Gatesfield and disappear after Clara beats up Jordan and she leaves town with the group rescuing Willow.

    Vaggie

Vagatha/Vaggie

A woman who ran away from home and hoped to become a professional dancer, only to become a burlesque dancer in Las Vegas.

Pastor McCay

The minister in charge of the town's church.
  • Ambiguously Human: He somehow appears in Gravity Falls for Luz and Amity's mock wedding in "It's a Nice Day for a Witch Wedding" and disappears into the shadows when he departs. What is he?
  • Expy: He's based on Norman McCay from Kingdom Come, with Buck saying this version of him appeared earlier in Teen Titans Dead Fic, New Titans.

    Janna Ordonia

Janna Ordania

A teenager from Echo Creek who is known as the local troublemaker. She likes to dabble in 'witchy' things and is friends with Marco and Jackie.
  • Adaptational Hairstyle Change: After being encouraged by Amity, Janna dyes her hair fuchsia (referencing her love of the color pink) with a few strands of her normal hair color.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: She starts treating Marco better and earlier than in canon-Star Vs., since she has a secret crush on him.
  • Everyone Can See It: Despite keeping her feelings for Marco close to the vest, Amity tells her she figured out her secret in Chapter 109.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She becomes nicer towards Marco hoping to date him but when he gets together with Jackie before she can have the chance, Janna foregoes confessing and supports her friends' relationship.
  • Secretly Selfish: Janna has always wanted to know somebody connected to the supernatural, so she keeps making excuses to keep Amity (who wanted to leave town to get to Gravity Falls and had suffered a panic attack) from leaving Echo Creek because of her connection to magic. Janna acknowledges this and apologizes to Amity after Ghost gets kidnapped by Mr. X.

    Marco Diaz

Marco Diaz

A teenager from Echo Creek who is Janna's friend/victim. He is a karate student and has a crush on Jackie Lynn Thomas.

    Jackie Lynn Thomas

Jackie Lynn Thomas

A skateboarder and the coolest girl in Echo Creek. She's friends with Janna and Marco, the latter whom has a crush on her.

  • One-Steve Limit: Jackie would eventually share her first name with Jackie Courtland, a witch girl from Metropelvis on the Boiling Isles.

A strange woman who lives by the river and likes to steal hair.

    Mr. X & Jenny

Mr. X & Jenny

Two government agents who specialize in extraterrestrial study. They came to Echo Creek to capture Star and become interested in Amity when she comes to town.
  • Transplant: They were recurring antagonists in Amphibia before becoming allies.

New York City

    The Long Family

Jake Long

The American Dragon who resides in New York City.

Haley Long

Jake's little sister.
  • Mythology Gag: Even though Haley's design is based off her appearance in ADJL Season 2, Haley's dragon form has purple scales as she did in Season 1.
  • Purple Is Powerful: In dragon form, her scales are purple.

Jonathan Long

Jake and Haley's father, Susan's husband, and Lao Shi's son-in-law.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Jonathan was simply a normal human in ADJL but in "A Long Overdue Reunion", he's revealed to have been a werewolf ever since a failed attempt to help his family with magical duties.
  • Mythology Gag: Jonathan being a werewolf was originally a cut plotline for ADJL had the series not been canceled.

    Violet

Violet

Rose's twin sister.

    Giselle

Giselle

France

    Aurore

Aurore

A young duchess who's run afoul of the Fae.
  • Freudian Excuse: She considers all Fae to be nothing but trouble as a result of blaming Mel for her brother's condition, which leads to her extending her hatred to Amity, who's only half-Fae and did nothing to prove Aurore's claims are justified.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Zig-Zagged. At first she comes off as friendly and flattering, but the moment she finds a Fae, that goes out the window and she won't stop until they're slain, as Amity learns for herself.
  • We Used to Be Friends: As Chapter 104 shows, she had once been close friends with Mel until her brother Jour ended up cursed and she accused Mel of causing it. This accusation is what led to Aurore's hatred of the Fae.

Department A

    In General
  • Absolute Xenophobe: The group gives off this vibe, actively taunting and harming magical beings like their lives don't matter.

    Department A

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

The real human doctor who was the inspiration of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. He is also the ex-partner of Dr. Bride.
  • Abusive Parents: A variant: Dr. Frankenstein was this to his monster, who Elizabeth saw as her child.
  • Desecrating the Dead: After bringing a dog back to life, Victor convinces Elizabeth to take it a step further by creating a being composed of the body parts of dead people, which they robbed graveyards for.
  • Dr. Jerk: Victor is this in spades; he builds a monster out of dead people parts, abuses said monster, kills Elizabeth when she frees their creation only to experiment on her and then bring her back to life.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Frankenstein scoffed at Elizabeth's claims that their monster is anything but and is angered that she let it escape so he couldn't abuse it anymore.
  • Laughing Mad: Frankenstein does so as he maniacally gloats to his Bride that he now owns her for life.

Michael

A sadistic agent who murdered Vaggie in order to track down Gus when he's trapped in the Human Realm.
  • Back from the Dead: In "Resolutions", Angel has Victor revive him, and he's horrified by his experience in the afterlife.
  • Freak Out: Upon being brought back to life, Michael panics due to his soul ending up in Hell. Angel has to tell Victor to get something to calm him down.
  • Karmic Death: In "Fallen Angel", Gus unleashes a Mind Rape on him that causes him to be haunted by the people he's killed throughout his life, and he dies of a heart attack (one where his heart explodes.
  • Kick the Dog: He openly mocked Gus after he was captured by bragging about how he killed Vaggie and proceeds to insult them. This ends up playing into his downfall.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Michael only appeared in three chapters and he ended up causing a major shift in Gus's personality before his murder.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: As previously stated, he only appeared in three chapters, but boy did he leave his mark. This winds up being subverted when Angel has him brought back to life.

The Huntsman

The former leader of the Huntsclan, who was erased from existence by Rose and somehow brought back to life.
  • Amicable Exes: Subverted. He and Abigail dated in the past, and now they're on bad terms with each other since Abigail doesn't live by her family's dedication to eliminating magickind anymore.
  • Back from the Dead: In Chapter 109, Angel reveals that she brought him back to life which is impossible considering he was wiped out of existence.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Because of his resurrection and allying with the Archangels, he falls into this.
  • First Kiss: Abigail admits he was this for her in "Those Gravity Falls Kids".
  • Named by the Adaptation: He had no name in the show, but here he's identified as "Jeff".
  • One-Steve Limit: He's known as Jeff, which is the name of the leader of the gnomes and Agent Powers' partner. He's notably the only non-Gravity Falls character to have this name.
  • Transplant: He was once Jake's mortal enemy and the Big Bad of American Dragon: Jake Long.

Undisclosed

    Jenny Porter

Jenny Porter

Gus' mother and Perry's ex-wife, who divorced Perry 5 years prior to the series and ended up in the Human Realm. She is currently in the custody of the Dragon Council.
  • Alchemy Is Magic: She was a student in the Potions track at Hexside. These skills are how she had been able to create love potions.
  • Ambiguous Situation: How she came to Earth is a mystery until Chapter 85, in which she reveals that she stole the dimensional scissors Lilith once procured from Anu Bist, which stopped working since Mewni was destroyed and thus, Hekapoo was trapped in the Nightmare Realm.
  • Disowned Parent: After finding herself to be detained by Jake and begging her son to help her, Gus disowns her for good in "Closing the Gates".
  • Honey Trap: This is the description of her relationship with Perry: she forced to fall in love with her using Love Potions for years, even having Gus with him to give him a reason to stay with her.
  • Karma Houdini: Chapter 52 shows that she escaped arrest from the Emperor's Coven for using illegal love potions on Perry and made it into the Human Realm.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: After being captured by Purgatory, punched and gagged by Willow, and disowned by her son, Jenny is left in Jake's custody at the end of the "Human Realm" arc to be tried for her crimes.
  • Parental Neglect: As flashbacks show, she hardly paid much attention to Gus, and he believes she only had him to keep Perry from leaving her.
  • Stalker with a Crush: "No Dancing Around" paints her as one, as she'd been obsessed with Perry since they were students and used love potions to date him.
  • Shout-Out: Her name is confirmed to be based off Ginny Weasley's married name in Harry Potter, Ginny Potter.
