    Team Satomi

In General

  • Adaptational Name Change: Originally called Team Suzaku in the microseries.
  • Butt-Monkey: In a way, due to basically every opposing team expressing a strong desire to make them lose at every turn. For some it has to do with feeling insulted with them even being in the IG-1 (being oddly talented, and often lucky, rookie "upstarts"), while for some others it's born from some kind of attraction due to Takeshi's Clueless Chick-Magnet tendencies.

Takeshi Jinno/Takeshi Jin

Voiced by: Kozo Mito (Japanese), Haley Joel Osment (English)

The Forward and team ace pilot of Team Satomi. His natural talent for racing and fighting Humongous Mecha has carried the team all the way to the IG-1. However, he's still a rebellious teenager that conflicts with his teammates, especially with Liz. During his team's time in the IG-1, he's forced to cooperate more with his teammates in order to win.

  • Adaptational Name Change: Was named Takeshi Noa in the microseries.
  • Chick Magnet: Has a ton of admirers, both known and unknown. Fantine, Bella, Liz, and Maxine to name some. This doesn't work well for him since he ends up getting tons of hate from all of the others, which results in a widespread protest during one race.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: While he's well aware of Fantine's attraction to him, even dating her officially, he is rather oblivious to the MANY other ladies with the hots for him.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Relied on this trope to become Team Satomi's top ace, much to the annoyance of Liz and River.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one when White Snow's Puppet Master ability causes him to injure Amy.
  • Legacy Character: Was originally named Takeshi Noa in the original microseries and had brown hair. He also initially specialized in ninjutsu, not kendo.

Elizabeth "Liz" Ricarro

Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe (Japanese), Michelle Rodriguez (English)

The defender of Team Satomi. Born in Puerto Rico without a family, she had little in terms of education other than Confucious and Mencius writings. Her own talent for piloting IGPX mechs brought her into Team Satomi as the trio's muscle.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Had blonde hair in the micro series, has dark brown hair in full-length anime.
  • The Big Girl: She is the Defender for Team Satomi.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Her well-endowed figure is a source of envy for Amy.
  • Last-Minute Hookup: She hooks up with Takeshi in the last episode.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: An episode of the second season has her becoming a fashion model, and turning quite a few heads in the process, particularly Takeshi who stumbles over his words when people notice him staring. She does it mainly so she can win the annual IGPX fashion contest, and use the prize money to rebuild her old orphanage that got demolished not long ago.
  • Team Mom: Despite her aggressive demeanor, she's always looking out for her team, backing off immediately if something she says or does upsets them, while also being there for them if they're upset about something else.
  • Tsundere: A Type A version. She's always seen beating up or harassing Takeshi all the time, but that's mainly because she does not want him to let everyone else on the team down.

Amy Stapleton

Voiced by: Ryōko Ono (Japanese), Hynden Walch (English)

The midfielder and the brains behind the team on the track.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Had dark brown hair in the original series, has blonde hair in the full-length series.
  • Badass Adorable: She manages to win against tough opponents several times when they needed it. This includes a tie with Sledge Mamma on their first face, winning again by pushing both of her teammates on the second season, and almost single-handedly taking down all of Team Edgeraid with the help of her teammates.
  • Cat Girl: Has the traits of one. Her pilot suit is also shaped like a cat to communicate with Luca. The PS2 game even has her meow when finishing a Combination Attack.
  • Child Prodigy: Her parents were always away working, so she spent most of her life surrounded by tutors and computers. She graduated at a college level when she was only seven.
  • Death by a Thousand Cuts: As a Fragile Speedster, she combats opposing mechs with multiple slashes via Spectacular Spinning.
  • Fighting Irish: A female example when in her mech, who is a Badass Adorable at that.
  • Fragile Speedster: As the team's Midfielder, she's incredibly fast but fragile at the same time.
  • Friend to All Living Things: What made her friendship with Luca.
  • Nice Girl: Pretty much the nicest girl in the entire series.
  • She's Back: When she returns after her injury from Team White Snow.
  • The Smart Girl: Shares the role with Luca on the racetrack, leading the team's coordinated efforts.

Luca

Voiced by: Vanilla Yamazaki (Japanese), Kari Wahlgren (English)

“This conversation is a complete waste of time.”
Amy's cat and her only company outside of the team. He was found abandoned at a young age when Amy found him and they became best friends ever since. To work with Amy, he had cybernetics implanted into his brain to more easily communicate with her.

Michiru Satomi

Voiced by: Emi Shinohara (Japanese), Kari Wahlgren (English)

Andrei Rublev/Rocket G

Voiced by: Masahiko Tanaka (Japanese), Lance Henriksen (English)

  • The Ace: He was initially Rocket G, a legendary pilot within the IGPX. He still has some moves when he replaces Amy for a couple of races.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: When he was Rocket G. After a fallout with his best friend, and his wife left him, he ended up drinking and had a vastly different appearance from before.
  • Retired Badass: Was a legendary IGPX pilot before Takeshi come in. He eventually retired from the race and played as the team's coach, until he's needed as a reserve pilot.

Masa Ishikawa/Mark Ramsey

Voiced by: Jin Horikawa (Japanese), Kirk Thornton (English)

The chief mechanic of Team Satomi. A graduate of Havard University, he has a strong liking for machines. He's also the heir to a large financial conglomerate, which he eventually convinces the executive board to merge with Satomi's corporate entity.

  • Dub Name Change: His name is Mark Ramsey in the English Dub.
  • Secret Legacy: Is the heir to a large financial clique. There is a whole side plot in the first season where he underwent dirty political business under his superior's nose to merge the company as means of better financing Team Satomi.
  • Spanner in the Works: In Season 2, it was him recognizing Max as an experienced hacker since she was a child that allowed the team to have any chance at winning the last race.

Jesse Martin

Voiced by: Yumi Sudo (Japanese), Julie Maddalena (English)

  • The Heart: The emotional support for the team.

River Marque

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese), Steve Staley (English)

  • Face–Heel Turn: Leaves Team Satomi midway through Season 1. He ends up with Team Sledge Mamma.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: Eventually becomes fed up with becoming a reserve pilot and joins Sledge Mamma.

    Team Sledge Mamma

One of the three teams that first appeared in the microseries. From the United States, the team is infamous for never playing by the rules.

In General

  • At Least I Admit It: What separates them from Team White Snow. They openly admit that they cheat whenever possible to win every race, while also taking down fans who go too far.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Before their losses to Velshtein and Satomi, they subverted this as it allowed them to win pretty much every championship.
  • Everyone Has Standards: They may cheat and play rough on races, but that's as far as they go. They put down Sledge Mamma fans who try to hurt the players off the track, and in more than that sense, they aren't as bad as Team White Snow.
  • Eagleland: Of the Boorish type, as they don't play by the rule and do what it takes to win. Though not as far as White Snow.

Yamma

Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (Japanese), Mark Hamill (English)
“Please, call me Captain!”

  • Adaptational Name Change: Named Yammer in the microseries.
  • Berserk Button: See Don't Call Me "Sir" below.
    • Also don't try to do anything other mech pilots when off the track. Some of his fans learn the hard way.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Inverted, as he insists that his teammates call him “Captain.” Dimma gets called out every time for it. When he’s retired from the team after failing to give them the championship, he tells them to simply call him “Yamma.”
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may have no qualms cheating in races, but he sets his fans straight when they try to do it outside of them.
  • Retired Badass: Becomes one at the end of the series.
  • Tranquil Fury: His when some of his fans try to hurt Team Satomi after losing to them.

Timma

Voiced by: Tomoyuki Shimura (Japanese), Andre Ware (English)

  • Adaptational Name Change: Named Timmer in the microseries.
  • Butt-Monkey: He only races against Team Satomi in their first race. After that, he gets replaced by River.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the microseries, he stood as part of the main trio for Sledge Mamma. He's then set on the sidelines to make room for River.

Dimma

Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Japanese), Dave Wittenberg (English)

River Marque

See Team Satomi for more details.

    Team Black Egg

In General

  • Stone Wall/Fragile Speedster: Their modus operandi is focusing purely on defense and avoiding combat whenever possible. In fact, one hit is enough to nearly knock them out of the race.
  • Flash Step: Part of the team's defensive abilities that blends with Master of Illusion.
  • Master of Illusion: Uses holograms, or afterimages of their Flash Step, to blindside opponents.
  • Meaningful Name: Their mechs are black and egg-shaped parts. They are also very fragile and focus on defensive abilities and quick maneuvers to win races.
  • Put on a Bus: They are not seen in season 2, having been demoted to the IGPX-2 for being in last place.
  • Smoke Out: Releases sensor-scrambling mists to blind their opponents and escape.

Ricardo Montazio

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese), Erik Davies (English)
“We ran a good race.”

  • Graceful Loser: Accepts his loss against Team Satomi quite well during the celebration of their first win, resulting in the quote above.

Grant McKain

Voiced by: Hisanori Koyatsu (Japanese)
“Rookie kids are always so excitable.”

Roger "Glass" Jones

Voiced by: Eiji Miyashita (Japanese), Dave Mallow (English)
“Can we try to get this thing over with quick, Ricardo? I need to get back to my lady friends.”

  • The Casanova: Mentions how he prefers getting back to his girlfriends rather than drag out the race.
  • Cool Shades: What gives him the nickname "Glass."

    Team Edgeraid
Originating from Switzerland, they are known for having the only cybernetically-enhanced animal before Satomi's entrance into the IG-1. They confront their opponents with rhythmic formations, super-strong wires Spider-Man-style, and spinning attacks.

In General

Bjorn Johannsen

Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English)

Bella Demarco

Voiced by: Miyako Ito (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)
“Come to mama, baby boy.”

Franklin "Frank" Bullet

Voiced by: Susumu Chiba (Japanese), Dave Wittenberg (English)

Sola

Voiced by: Yuko Tachibana (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)
“Here, kitty, kitty. Wanna play?”

  • Famed In-Story: Like Luca, she has her own dog food brand.
  • Foil: To Luca. Sola is a female dog who gives in easily to her emotions, while Luca is more level-headed.
  • Talking Animal: Can talk to Bjorn and Luca due to her cybernetics.
  • Team Pet: Of Team Edgeraid, though her skills as a cybernetic animal are yet to be seen.

    Team Skylark
An all-female team that hails from France. Their key to victory heavily relies on their star pilot, their Forward, as their ace in the hole. The Midfielder and Defender serve as her guards on the track, protecting her while wins the races for them.
  • Amazon Brigade: All three of their pilots and their coach are female.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Their special is transforming their arms into a combat stance to throw multiple punches at once.

Fantine Valjean

Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Karen Strassman (English)

The forward for Team Skylark, also known as "The Princess." She's seen chatting and flirting with Takeshi. At least up until Season 2.

Jessica Darlin

Voiced by: Kiyomi Asai (Japanese), Kate Higgins (English)

Elisa Doolittle

Voiced by: Miho Hino (Japanese), Michelle Ruff (English)

    Team Velshtein

In General

  • This Is Unforgivable!: All three pilots have this attitude towards Team Satomi when Andrei, who substituted Amy at the time, injured Jan and additionally took out Dew with a Flash Step move. Fortunately, they forgive them after the next race.

In General

Alex "Cunningham" Hume

Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (Japanese), Steve Blum (English)

  • Foil: He is what Takeshi could have been if he was trained by a perfectionist like Sir Hamgra, rather than a more lax coach like Andrei.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: In a Dream Sequence in the middle of the race, he displays fencing powers to duel Takeshi's kendo abilities.
  • Red Baron: Known as "The Ghost" in the IG-1.
  • The Rival: See's himself as Takeshi's. Due to being so talented at the sport that no one could really challenge him, He saw Takeshi's arrival as a chance to finally have a real challenge.

Jan Michel

Voiced by: Kiyotaka Furushima (Japanese), Dave Wittenberg (English)

Duane/Dew

Voiced by: Yuuto Kazama (Japanese), Lex Lang (English)

Sir Hamgra

Voiced by: Joji Nakata (Japanese), Kim Strauss (English)

  • Foil: To Andrei in every way. Hamgra is a near-military professionalist, while Andrei is far more laid back and lets his pilots develop on their own.
  • The Rival: Long before Takeshi and Cunningham's rivalry, he was one with Andrei when he was known as Rocket G. His grudge still continued with him even after they both retired from the race, commanding his own rival team to pit against Team Satomi. Eventually, he makes up with him after their teams' last race in Season 2.

Team White Snow (Season 2 SPOILERS

In General

  • Antagonist Abilities: What separates them from Team Sledge Mamma is how far they're willing to give themselves in edge during the races, both on and off the track.
  • Combining Mecha: The Snowman.
  • Hate Sink: Team White Snow are a group of smug remorseless cheaters dedicated to destroying Team Satomi simply to prove they can. Their vile actions combined with their loathsome behavior makes their ultimate downfall all the more satisfying.
  • Smug Snake: All of them waste no time congratulating themselves on their actions throughout the entire second season, behaving as if they aren't blatantly cheating at every turn and are genuinely better racers. They play up the shy humble sportsmen angle for the cameras, and immediately do and say whatever they can to get under Team Satomi's skin if they "bump into" them in private.
  • Weapon Wields You: Team White Snow's "Puppet Master" attack allows their mechs to grab onto the enemy and hack into their systems, causing said mechs to attack each other. Needless to say, it gets banned from the sport entirely by the final race. Not that they don't try to hack them remotely anyway.

Zanak Strauss

Voiced by: Kenta Miyake (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (English)
“We're going to take the IG-1 to school.”

  • Evil Counterpart: He is a kendo expert like Takeshi and is what the Team Satomi pilot could have been if he let his arrogance get the better of him.
  • Jerkass Façade: How much of his treatment of Takeshi is real becomes ambiguous when it turns out he was never White Snow’s true leader.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His mech splits into four separate arms.
  • Puppet King: Or rather puppet team leader. Max let him play the role while she directed all of their activities from behind the scenes.

Maxine "Max" Erlich

Voiced by: Chika Fujimura (Japanese), Mela Lee (English)

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Don’t let her shy personality fool you. She may look passive and a subordinate under Zanak, but she’s a master programmer. Moreso when she turns out to the be White Snow’s real Captain, and pretty much the head of their entire operations.
  • Big Bad: The closest to one in Season 2. While Zanak starts off acting as White Snow's Captain, she's the true leader behind him, and it was her desire to defeat Team Satomi that put them through a whole lot of trouble throughout the second season. Even before, it's hinted that she's directly responsible for directly funding their operations and modifying/maintaining their mechs through her private company.
  • Easily Forgiven: Doesn’t seem to face any repercussions other than losing the final race and a straight-up talk from Takeshi. Even when she confessed to the team she screwed with all of season two that is all her doing.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Amy, sharing her Child Prodigy intellect, Shrinking Violet personality, and lack of social skills. She's also what Amy could have been if she didn't have anyone or anything to break through those social barriers.
  • Famed In-Story: A pretty infamous one at that. Not only was she a Child Prodigy in computers and robotics as a near infant, but she also hacked into military networks as a teenager to the point she was nearly arrested.
  • Graceful Loser: Thanks Takeshi for the ability to overcome all obstacles she set before him and promises not to cheat anymore the next season.
  • Not So Stoic: As part of her Villainous Breakdown, she gives in to her emotions and lashes out at her teammates. Proof that she is the real one calling the shots.
  • Shrinking Violet: Often communicates better verbally than socially. She starts breaking out of this during her Villainous Breakdown and after straight talk from Takeshi.
  • Troll: Is one as “Mini-Bear” in Takeshi’s online handheld game.
  • Villain No Longer Idle: Averted, since she's been White Snow's Captain and thus coordinated all of their trouble against Team Satomi from the very beginning. It's only during the final race when things start turning against White Snow that she completely steps in to do things herself.
Max: I'll take over from here. I work better on my own anyway!
  • Villainous Breakdown: She of all people suffers this in the last race.
    JUST DIE ALREADY!
  • Villainous Crush: She was a fan of Takeshi for an unknown period of time, which inspired her to go through so much trouble to overcome his Determinator qualities.

Judi Ballasteros

Voiced by: Kotono Mitsuishi (Japanese), Megan Hollingshead (English)
“Team White Snow only cares about winning. We don’t care who we have to hurt!”

  • The Brute: She is the Defender for Team White Snow.
  • Eagleland: Of the Boorish type, due to her American origins. How much of this is real is ambiguous due to the nature of her real Captain.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Liz.

    Others

Benjamin Bright

Voiced by: Tadashi Miyazawa (Japanese), Tom Kenny (English)

  • Combat Commentator: Naturally, as the host of IGPX.
  • Large-Ham Announcer: One of the clearest cut examples out there as he never talks without his hammy voice.
  • Mr. Exposition: In addition to announcing, he also provides quick refreshers of the IGPX sport (for the audience's benefit), as well as new developments as the series goes on, such as certain rule changes as a result of various weapons and tactics used by the racers.

Yuri Jinno/Yuri Jin

Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)

Takeshi's younger sister, who happily teases him whenever he's at home, while also providing some moral support.

Johnny

Voiced by: Yuuki Mitsugi (Japanese), Brianne Siddall (English)

  • Ascended Fanboy: He was a big fan of Team Satomi that he became great friends with Takeshi and Liz. At the end of the second season, he’s officially part of their crew.
  • Shipper on Deck: Even though Takeshi and Fantine were basically already dating, he teases them about a time when their mechs ended up in a very romantic position together, musing that they did it deliberately (which they both immediately deny).
