    Fang

Fang

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1000002275.png

Voiced by: Lachlan Watson
Singing Voice: Lachlan Watson, Brigitte Naggar
"That's, like, the one thing we can control right now... to live the lives we've always dreamed of, no matter how long we have left. And doing it on our terms. With our songs. And our hard work."

A nonbinary pterosaur and the lead guitarist and vocalist for Worm Drama. They wish to be a professional musician and go on tour. To that end, they've been trying to get an audition for the upcoming Battle of the Bands.

  • The Ace: Fang is ridiculously good at anything musical they set their mind to, and they are known as the musician at Volcano High. They play acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, piano, and are competent with midi controllers, and they are the sole song writer for Worm Drama, too. At one point, the other members of Worm Drama even admit Fang could just go on as a solo act because they don't need any help.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Fangy" from Stella.
  • Against the Grain: While the entire rest of the cast are trying to decide which college and major they want to attend, Fang is the odd one out. They have no interest at all in college, instead choosing to follow their dream of a career in music.
  • All for Nothing: They pursued their dream to win Battle of the Bands and perform at CalderaFest, even risking alienating Trish and Reed, only for the festival to be canceled due to the impending apocalypse.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Fang had always dreamed of winning Battle of the Bands and performing at CalderaFest. They achieve this dream, but signing up for CalderaFest while Trish is trying to take a break from the band ends up damaging their friendship.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Fang's singing voice is noted by almost everyone, even Swamp Babies, to be incredible.
  • Black Sheep: Fang goes against their family's more traditional, professional aesthetic in favor of their punk rebel look.
  • Character Development: While Fang has always loved and supported their friends, they've always been laser-focused on their dream of pursuing music professionally, which blinded them to other people's feelings. As the story progresses and the threat of extinction becomes more real, Fang begins making choices to help their friends find happiness (or, at least, closure) before the asteroid hits.
  • Childish Older Sibling: In contrast with Naser's more career-oriented path, Fang is banking their hopes and dreams on their music, seeing no other way of living their life.
  • Cleavage Window:
    • The outfit worn for their date with Naomi includes a black top with a see-through cleavage window.
    • Their default outfit for the final concert includes a black top has a cleavage window cut in the shape of a shooting star.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • They and their secret admirer share a love for the "Pretty Heroes" anime from their childhoods.
    • They bond with Sage and Rosa over shared Trans Tribulations, including not being taken seriously by family and going against their family's culture by transitioning.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Fang's natural red-orange hair is a close match to their orange eyes.
  • Determinator: When Fang has their heart set on a goal, nothing — not even the literal end of the world — can stop them from fighting to achieve it. Friends don't have time to learn all new music for the audition? Rework the back catalog and use whatever free time they have to practice. Meteor causes a power outage during Battle of the Bands? Go on stage with an acoustic guitar and perform anyway. Meteor causes CalderaFest to be canceled? Break into the school, use the roof as a stage, and invite everyone in the city to watch. Fang's determination is so infectious that it keeps their whole friend group from spiraling into despair in the final days.
  • Disappointing Older Sibling: An optional example in episode 2 can occur if Fang refuses to help Naser with his speech. He'll even call them out on it, as the two were on their way to school with nothing else to talk about anyway.
  • Doing It for the Art: In-universe. Even though winning CalderaFest is a huge career-making moment for musicians, Fang's pursuing it more for the love of music than fame and fortune. They even relate this to Sage in episode 7, saying music was always fun for them, even when they sucked.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Fang trusts LJ wholeheartedly, even if Trish and Reed are doubtful about her intentions. Sure enough, LJ proves herself to be a reliable, caring mentor figure. More than just helping Fang find their direction in music, she counsels Fang during the story's Darkest Hour, and donates Lava Java's music equipment for Worm Drama's final concert.
  • Generation Xerox: They bear a strong resemblance to their father, having the same scale overall color and feathered wings, minus the gold and lacking the head crest.
  • Goal in Life: Fang's ultimate goal in life is to succeed as a musician and tour across Pangea with their friends performing music.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Seeing how much time Trish is spending with Rosa makes Fang both jealous of Rosa and anxious that Trish is giving up on music. Fang trying to ignore it and railroading Trish into performing at CalderaFest only ends up driving Trish away.
  • Hates Being Alone: Fang is terrified of the possibility of their friends leaving them, so when Trish starts to show interests outside the band, Fang tries to hold on to her tighter.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Over the course of the game, they develop a friendship with LJ, who's older and becomes a mentor to Fang.
  • Informed Species: They're supposed to be a pterosaur, but their feathered wings and arms make them look more like an archaeopteryx.
  • Interspecies Romance: Optionally, with Naomi.
  • It's All About Me: An accidental example. Fang's laser focus on their music career, and always envisioning Trish and Reed as part of that, blinds them to how their friends feel about being in the band long-term. Thanks to some heavy Character Development, Fang recognizes this issue and tries to make things right. By the end of the game when prepping for the final concert, Fang stops to double-check with their friends to make sure they're doing what they want, and that it's not all about Fang anymore.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Their reactions to Naser's puns in the flashback range from lightly annoyed to outright irritated.
  • Lead Singer Plays Lead Guitar: Fang is both the lead guitar and singer for Worm Drama.
  • The Leader: Initially just the leader of Worm Drama, but gradually becomes this to the whole friend group.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Fang gradually becomes this to the entire friend group as the threat of the asteroid becomes more real. This ends up being a problem for Fang, who's not used to being the glue holding everyone together, but comes to embrace it. Stella tells Fang outright that they kept everyone from spiraling by the end.
  • Love Before First Sight: They begin falling in love with their secret admirer before finding out their true identity.
  • Must Make Amends: With Trish and Naomi in episode 7; Trish because Fang ignored what she wanted and pushed her into their music dream and Naomi because Fang spent so much time avoiding her and cursed her out at the bonfire.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Their immediate reaction after they tell Naomi to "fuck off" in episode 7.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In episode 5, they're so hyped over winning Battle of the Bands that they sign LJ's CalderaFest contract before talking to Trish or Reed. This sets Trish off, who was trying to leave the band to focus on her own life before the asteroid hits. There's also an optional example shortly after: Fang can choose to stay with Rosa, Sage and Stella a little longer instead of meeting their secret admirer that's waiting outside. This causes Fang to lose track of time, standing up Naomi and breaking her heart.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Their natural hair color is red, and they dye it silver for senior year. With their new outfit, it gives them a punk rebel look. Choosing to wear Naomi's new outfit at the concert includes Fang dyeing their hair pastel violet; otherwise, Fang adds white streaks to their hair.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Ironically, they, if anything, invert this, since pterosaurs were actually believed to possess hair-like filaments covering their bodies; the presence of feathers on their body would actually be weirder, since few if any true pterosaurs possessed feathers.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Gradually develops this attitude as the game progresses; they don't want to die, but there's no way to stop the inevitable end. It even slips into the lyrics of their later songs, including "12 o'clock" and "Pretty Heroes".
  • Not So Above It All: Despite them hating Naser's puns, they can join in on making a pun during the car ride in episode 2. They can also optionally do this in episode 4, to Trish's annoyance.
  • Oblivious to Love: In episode 7, Naser tells Fang that Naomi has had a crush on them for a long time, and Fang wasn't picking up on it because they were too caught up in pursuing their music dreams to see it.
  • Odd Name Out: Fang's chosen name stand out against their family's traditional Arabic names.
  • Official Couple: With Naomi, depending on the player's choices.
  • Opposites Attract: If Fang reciprocates Naomi's feelings in episode 7.
  • Queer Colors: Fang's bag has a decal which has the non-binary pride colors and the pronouns "they/them" written on it.
  • Relationship Upgrade: If Fang chooses to reciprocate Naomi's feelings in episode 7, they become a couple and stay that way for the rest of the game.
  • Signature Instrument: Their guitar, which resembles a bass guitar but heavily modified into an electric guitar.
  • Small Town Boredom: Fang's dialog in episodes 1 and 2 implies this to be part of the reason why they want to succeed in music and go on tour: they're bored of Caldera Bay and want to see the rest of the world.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: Both Fang's chosen name and deadname Fatima begin with the letters "Fa".
  • Trans Tribulations: Their parents, while still being loving and supportive, don't understand Fang's gender identity, and their mom still refers to Fang by their deadname. Naser tries to reassure Fang that they're getting better, but when pressed, admits that he cannot find a single text message where their mother uses 'Fang'.
  • The Un-Favourite: Implied; Fang being nonbinary and having an ambition for a music career leads to their parents not taking them seriously anymore.
  • Winged Humanoid: Possesses a pair of feathered wings on their back, though the wings of actual pterosaurs were extensions of their arms.

    Trish

Trish

Voiced by: Ozioma Akagha
"Look at all these entomology courses! There's an entire class just on spider biology. I looked it up and it has six different textbooks! Dude, I'm gonna be the spider queen!"

Fang's best friend, a triceratops and the guitarist and backup vocalist for Worm Drama.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Does this to Fang at the conclusion of their secret scene in episode 8.
  • Commonality Connection: She and Rosa bonded over the summer thanks to their love for nature and their intersecting interests. This stands in contrast to Fang and Reed, who find Trish's love for bugs gross.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: She's struggling to overcome fear of graduation and college because she's unsure about what she wants to do with her future. Fang and Stella encourage her to turn her love for bugs into a career in entomology.
  • Fleeting Passionate Hobbies: Whether it be bugs, music, welding, or tabletop games, Trish has a habit of becoming passionately obsessed with her current fixation. On one hand, this makes her highly competent in whatever she's currently doing; but on the other, all of her other interests fall to the wayside. Her love for studying bugs causes her interest in music to wane, leading to her taking a break from Worm Drama, but it's rekindled in the final two episodes.
  • Friend to Bugs: Trish loves bugs, and she especially loves Mango, her new velvet worm. She's even considering a degree in entomology.
  • Genki Girl: Easily the most excitable girl in the cast, best seen when Reed reveals his crush and after Worm Drama wins Battle of the Bands.
  • In-Series Nickname: Her real name is Patricia, but everyone except for Fang's parents call her Trish.
  • Jerkass to One: She's kind and sweet to everyone except for the members of Swamp Babies.
  • Poor Communication Kills: She tries to clue Fang in that she needs to break away from the band for some time to figure herself out and spend time with her other friends, but Fang is too deep into their music dream to comprehend what Trish is trying to say. This boils over in episode 5, and Trish owns up to her part of this trope in episode 8.
  • Shipper on Deck: In the L&L sessions, she's supportive of Rosa/Maia's crush on Keph, despite him being the antagonist.
  • Temper-Ceratops: Subverted. Aside from joking about violence and playing a fairly violent character in L&L, Trish herself is usually sweet and chill. The few times where she gets angry are understandable.
  • Youthful Freckles: She has freckles both on her face and on the back of her hands.

    Reed

Reed

Voiced by: Mark Whitten
"It's weird how everyone's acting like nothing is different. Like, to me, everything feels different now."

A velociraptor, and the drummer for Worm Drama.

  • Absurd Phobia: He never admits it outright, but he's afraid of Picture Day. His excuse is that it's a family tradition to not be photographed for it.
  • Ambiguously Bi: His sexuality is never stated outright, but he appears to find Rosa attractive, and is shown flirting with a male classmate, Alvin, in a flashback.
  • Anguished Outburst: He has a minor one in episode 7 if Fang talks to him at the bonfire. He goes on a rant about how bullshit it is that their impending deaths were caused by a random series of events in the far reaches of space that had nothing to do with them, and will eventually happen to some other form of life again.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Of the Worm Drama trio, he takes the asteroid news the hardest, while also hiding it better. The mask slips in episode 3 when he expresses disillusionment about applying for college, as he assumes they'll all be dead soon, and his L&L sessions gradually become darker. By episode 7, he admits to Fang at the bonfire that he's developed a bad habit of watching doomsday videos.
  • Dissonant Serenity: He seems to be able to stay chill regardless of how tense things get, something Fang notes in episode 2. In truth, he worries just as much as anyone else, but is better at hiding it.
  • Game Master: He's the DM for the "Legends & Lore" game sessions.
  • Iconic Item: His white headphones, which he's almost never seen without.
  • Man of a Thousand Voices: An Informed Attribute since it's never heard, but he voices all of the NPC characters in the L&L games.
  • Not So Stoic: His initial reaction to the asteroid news is indifference and memes, but his anxiety about it begins to seep through. It even influences his creative process for L&L, ultimately making him unable to come up with a happy ending for the final session.
  • Smoking Is Cool: During a few of his more private conversations with Fang, he's seen smoking. Word of God is that it is officially just tobacco so the game could retain a T rating, but this is never actually stated in game and the implication of it being marijuana is obvious.
  • Straight Gay: Despite his looks and mannerisms, he's shown to be flirting with a male classmate in a flashback, which Trish and Fang give him some friendly teasing about. He ultimately brings him to what seems to be prom in a background shot during the last episode, as well.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: He has very broad shoulders in contrast with his narrow waistline.

    Naser

Naser

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gvh_naser.png

Voiced by: Abe Bueno-Jallad
"Not all of us can coast on our talent... Some of us actually have to go to school."

The class president, and Fang's younger pterosaur brother.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: He's this to Fang, often sharing his most annoying pun jokes with them. In the final episode, he even teases Fang about their upcoming date with Naomi.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: In episode 5, if Fang apologizes to Naser for the fight in episode 3, he'll come backstage during Battle of the Bands to give Fang encouragement before their performance.
  • Big Little Brother: He's taller than Fang, who's a year older than him.
  • Broken Ace: He has a large list of extracurricular activities on top of his Class President responsibilities, but they're all in service to a future goal he hasn't yet decided. He admits to Fang in episode 7 that so much of what he is has been defined by their parents banking on him being the "normal" child.
  • Carpet of Virility: He has dark scales on his chest that give this impression when he wears shirts with a lower neckline.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: His role as Class President comes in handy near the end of the game: he still has the keys to Volcano High, meaning the school can be used as a venue for Worm Drama's final concert.
  • Class Representative: He's the Class President, and with it comes a whole host of responsibilities. Fang can't help but characterize him as a narc at times for this.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Both Rosa and Stella show interest in him, and he reciprocates neither. Stella even jokingly refers to him as her "future husband".
  • Covered with Scars: His wings, especially his stunted wing.
  • The Dutiful Son: His parents have high expectations for him, so he puts himself in charge of handling everything at home on top of his Class President and extracurricular activities.
  • Fictional Disability: His atrophied left wing means he can't fly like Fang can.
  • Generation Xerox: He resembles his mom in color and featherless wings, except he has his father's head shape and crest.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He joins the final L&L session as a revived Keph, with the character artwork changing to match.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: While most of his outfit is normal, he's always wearing a tacky flower-covered bomber jacket.
  • Mature Younger Sibling: In contrast to his older sibling Fang, Naser is more mature and level-headed. However, he still turns to them to advice from time to time.
  • Meaningful Name: "Naser" can mean "granter of victory", "helper", or "supporter", all roles Naser plays in Fang's story.
  • Shipper on Deck: It's implied he's this toward Fang and Naomi getting together.
  • Pungeon Master: Puns are his go-to form of humor. A flashback shows he badgered Fang with puns nonstop all summer.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's taller and looks more mature than his sibling Fang, but is a year younger than them.

    Naomi

Naomi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gvh_naomi.png

Voiced by: Allegra Clark
"I just wanted to say sorry that I put you on the spot. I didn't realise you haven't really made a plan. Still, I think it's interesting that you want to play music. You never seemed like the kind of person who would go to university."

A socially awkward parasaurolophus in charge of the Yearbook Committee.

  • Anguished Outburst: Due to her struggling to cope with the impending end of the world, she has one of these midway through episode 7 after CalderaFest is cancelled and Fang quickly comes to peace with it. She ends up lashing out at Stella, Reed, Trish, and Fang before Fang cursing her out snaps her out of it.
  • Character Tics: She tends to hold her hands together against her chest, especially when happy or relieved.
  • Chekhov's Skill: In episode 2, after the assembly, Naomi tries to recruit some of the gang into the engineering club, where they plan to dissect robot frogs. Sure enough, someone who can repair electronics becomes necessary when Fang ruins their midi controller and needs it fixed in time for the Battle of the Bands audition.
  • Commonality Connection: She and Fang both share a love for the "Pretty Heroes" anime from their childhoods.
  • Condescending Compassion: She's a poor verbal communicator, and so her comments can often come out as this, especially her aside to Fang during episode 1. She's much better at texting, since she has time to think out her words carefully.
  • Cute Bookworm: Checks all the boxes. Shy, young, quiet, socially awkward, big glasses, and a whole lot of nerdy interests.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She's great at repairing electronics, which comes in handy when Fang's midi controller is damaged by nail polish.
  • Girls Like Musicians: The girliest character in the cast, and she's in love with Fang, an incredibly talented musician.
  • Hero's Muse: As Fang's secret admirer, her texts help motivate Fang's creative process, leading to them writing the song "Pretty Heroes".
  • Hidden Depths: While introduced as the head of the Yearbook Committee, she's later shown to have skills in repairing electronics. She also has incredible talent for sewing and makes all of her own clothes.
  • Innocently Insensitive: As the above quote illustrates, Naomi sometimes stumbles into unintentional insults while trying to speak positively or act supportive.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Played with. She's demonstrated to be one of the smartest characters of the main cast, and while she's best friends with Naser and part of Reed L&L group, she's still considered the outsider of Fang's friend group.
  • Interspecies Romance: Optionally, with Fang.
  • Just Friends: How her relationship with Fang can end up after episode 7, if Fang doesn't return her feelings. Naomi is heartbroken but relieved to have a conclusion.
  • Life's Work Ruined: One of her complaints in episode 7 is how the asteroid has ruined all of the future plans and projects she had been working to achieve. After finally coming to terms with the world's impending demise, she invokes this trope by offering the school yearbook, the one thing she accomplished during the school year, as a sacrifice to induct the newly reformed Worm Drama.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: As Fang's secret admirer, her texts give Fang the drive to not give in to despair throughout the year and keep going, even inspiring a new song. This in turn helps Fang keep everyone else from spiraling.
  • Love Confession: Anonymously to Fang at the very end of episode 1.
  • Nerd Glasses: She wears pink horn-rimmed glasses, giving her a cute nerd look.
  • No Social Skills: She has trouble picking up on social cues and has trouble communicating with others, and not for lack of trying.
  • Official Couple: With Fang, depending on the player's choices.
  • Opposites Attract: The meek, conformist bookworm Naomi is in love with the outspoken, punk-rock rebel Fang.
  • The Perfectionist: She has a habit of becoming this with any project he's given. Naser tells her she's this, which she mistakes for a compliment.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In episode 7, after Fang comes to peace with CalderaFest being cancelled, Naomi complains how everyone seems to be taking their impending demise so calmly and that all of her future plans have been ruined by the asteroid. She even goes as far as outright telling the rest of the cast she had plans for the rest of her life, while nobody else did, picking on Stella's interest in tarot and Reed's fixation on Legends & Lore specifically. She ultimately only backs off when even Fang gets upset enough that they tell her to "fuck off".
  • Relationship Upgrade: If Fang chooses to return Naomi's feelings in episode 7, they become a couple and stay that way for the rest of the game.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: She's shown wearing one in the photo of her date night with Fang in episode 8.
  • Shrinking Violet: She has trouble talking to people and hates public speaking.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She wears glasses and is the most studious member of the cast, including taking on lots of extracurricular activities at school.
  • Workaholic: She was already this due to trying to get into a good college, but after news of the asteroid breaks, she takes on even more extracurricular activities to keep herself from dwelling on it.

    Rosa

Rosa

Voiced by: Dee Revilla
"I know I'm biased, but you're my favorite band in the Battle, like, hands down. I know things are gonna work out for your music, Fang. You've got something really special."

An aquilops and Trish's new friend, having bonded with her during summer camp.

  • Caring Gardener: She's in the school's gardening club, she went to summer camp with Trish to study and care for plants, and she's a gentle, nurturing sweetheart.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • She and Trish bonded over the summer thanks to their shared love for nature, and how their respective interests intersect.
    • A flashback reveals she and Sage bonded over shared struggles with how they feel like "support staff" for their friends.
    • Finally, she and Fang bond over shared struggles with their transitions conflicting with their family's culture.
  • Drives Like Crazy: She's a scary driver, according to Trish.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Named after roses, a type of flower.
  • Noodle Incident: Her papier-mâché volcano incident in second grade, which (according to Trish) caused the teacher to quit.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: For the smaller screentime she has, she starts a new trajectory for Trish's life and career and (unintentionally) drives a wedge between Fang and Trish.
  • Trans Tribulations: Her parents had a hard time coming around to her transition, and even after they did, the rest of her more traditional conservative family did not. With the news of the asteroid, her parents want the family reunited for the final days, but they won't accept Rosa the way she is.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: She has no ill will or intentions, but befriending Trish and helping to encourage a career in entomology leads to Trish retiring from Worm Drama, triggering a nasty falling out between Fang and Trish later.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Because her extended family refuses to accept her as a trans woman, she can't go to see them before the asteroid hits.

    Sage

Sage

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gvh_sage.png

Voiced by: Jensen Trani
"I'll have you guys over all the time to try my weird food experiments! I applied to, like, 300 culinary programs. I'm pretty sure cooking is it for me. This feels like make or break."

A feminine microraptor that loves cooking and baking.

  • Absurd Phobia: He's afraid of skeletons. Trish reminds him there's a skeleton inside him, and that grosses him out even more.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: He's small, has large glasses for his big eyes, and he's adorable.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • In episode 4, he and Fang bond over their family not taking their transitions or career ambitions seriously.
    • A flashback reveals he and Rosa bonded over shared struggles with how they feel like "support staff" for their friends.
  • Effeminate Voice: Sage has a very feminine voice compared to Reed and Naser, justified due to him being a trans man.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: One of his overall straps is always hanging loose compared to the other.
  • Fork Fencing: In L&L, his character uses a giant fork as a weapon.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: For a guy, he's very feminine in his appearance and mannerisms. As revealed in a private conversation with Fang, being a trans man, he only came to enjoy femininity once it became an option instead of an obligation.
  • Keet: An adorable, excitable, feminine boy.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: A deconstructed example. Out of everyone in Fang's inner circle, he's the most lighthearted and cheerful, often exchanging humorous banter with Stella. But as revealed in his secret scene with Fang in episode 4, he behaves like this in part because being a feminine trans man, he can't deal with people being uncomfortable around him, so he tries acting this way to put people at ease. But in doing so, he worries that nobody takes him seriously, especially regarding his gender and career ambitions.
  • Supreme Chef: He spent his summer sharpening his baking and cooking skills, turning him into this by the time senior year starts. He gets so little negative feedback that he begs his friends to be honest about his cooking, worried they're just humoring him, but Stella reassures him that he's a "culinary superstar".
  • Sweet Baker: His main passion is baking, and he's also super over the top friendly and feminine.
  • Those Two Guys: He and Stella serve as this.
  • Trans Tribulations: After coming out as a trans man, his parents refused to take his transition seriously, especially when he chooses to be more feminine as a man than he ever was as a girl. When talking about it with Fang, he says they see him as "a kid playing dress-up" and don't have any serious expectations for him anymore.
  • Verbal Tic: When he's trying to be serious, he tends to punctuate sentences with "you know?"
  • Wanted a Gender-Conforming Child: When he was a girl, his parents pressured him into looking and acting feminine, and they were uncomfortable when he came out as transgender to them. Making things even worse, after transitioning to male, he then chooses to dress and act feminine, which only earns him more ridicule from family.

    Stella

Stella

Voiced by: Sarah Elmaleh
"I like to think there's at least a higher order. To make sense of the chaos. There's a lot of stuff that's out of my control. Tarot, mysticism... it lets me work things out."

A stegosaurus, and a self-proclaimed Tarot and astrology expert.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Stel" from Fang.
  • Barefoot Sage: She uses her Tarot cards to help advise her friends on their futures, and she's also always barefoot.
  • Big Fun: She's a big girl who always bring positive vibes to any situation she's in.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She briefly crosses it midway through episode 7. Naomi lashing out at Stella during her breakdown causes Stella to begin questioning her faith in Tarot, especially with the end of the world looming. Fang helps pull her back by reminding her of the lessons she taught them through Tarot, giving Stella renewed strength to carry on.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • She's usually the sweetest, gentlest character of the cast. Her snapping at Naomi during the bonfire scene serves to indicate just how bad the tension and anxiety of the impending apocalypse has gotten.
    • Stella always plays the Tarot cards faithfully to how they're meant to be used. Except in episode 8, when she rigs the cards to give Fang a special "thank you" message, showing how much Fang's determination has impacted her.
  • Really Moves Around: A Type 1 example. She explains to Fang in episode 3 that her family moved around a lot when she was growing up, and living in such an unstable situation is what drew her to Tarot and mysticism.
  • Shipper on Deck: In a private conversation with Fang, she admits one reason she's so into mysticism is so she can predict Sage's love life. And her texts in the group chat suggests she sees Trish and Rosa as a potential couple.
  • Team Mom: A Subverted Trope. Stella tries to be the "mom" of the group by always showing up to support her friends, encouraging their dreams, and giving advice through her Tarot. But in episode 7, during Naomi's breakdown, Stella is the first to get angry at her, and she's too distraught after the fight to help anyone, showing that she can't live up to the "team mom" ideal.
  • Those Two Guys: She and Sage serve as this.
  • What Does She See in Him?: She has a crush on Naser, but Sage doesn't see the appeal.

Other Characters

    Mango

Mango

Trish's new pet velvet worm.

  • Animals Not to Scale: Compared to modern day velvet worms, Mango is much larger, about the length of a house cat. One line from Trish suggests giant bugs are normal.
  • Covered in Gunge: Mango's most defining trait involves their tendency to slime everything. Then Trish brings the little one to Class Picture Day, resulting in what looks like a photo shoot gag straight out of old school Nickelodeon.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Gross habits aside, Mango is decidedly far cuter than the real life insect.

"Believe me when I say that this year will fly by, and you will find yourselves wishing you'd taken more time to prepare."

Fang's no-nonsense homeroom teacher.

  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a habit of snarking at students who talk about irrelevant topics in class.
  • Last-Name Basis: Her first name, Misty, is never revealed in-game, so she's only referred to as "Ms. Roberts" or just "Roberts".
  • Ship Tease: With LJ at the end of episode 8.
  • Skepticism Failure: She believes the asteroid isn't going to hit the planet, and explains the unlikelihood of it happening to Reed, stating that prediction models will improve over time and lower the chance of probability. She's completely wrong, and the panic of the impending apocalypse becomes stronger by the day.
  • Stern Teacher: She's strict and firm, but she cares about her students and wants them to succeed after high school.

    LJ

LJ

Voiced by: Sarah Elmaleh
"It's about community. Nothing's worth doing til the end of all things if you don't have people to share it with."

The owner of Lava Java, and the organizer of CalderaFest and Battle of the Bands.

  • Brutal Honesty: She cares about every musician she promotes, but she's not afraid to tell them when their music won't cut it.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Gradually develops one with Fang.
  • Mentor Archetype: From the start, LJ sees promise in Fang's skills as a musician, and pushes Fang to write new music to improve their craft. Once the story's Darkest Hour kicks in, she encourages Fang to make things right with their friends, reminding them that they're better, and happier, when performing with them.
  • Only in It for the Money: Averted. She tells Fang outright in episode 6 that this isn't the case for her, which is why she refuses to let Fang do a solo music tour in the wake of Worm Drama's breakup and the impending apocalypse.
  • Only Known by Initials: Her full name is never revealed.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: A few days before the asteroid is meant to hit, she calls off CalderaFest, and tells Fang that she's going to board up Lava Java and head out to a cabin in the woods to wait out the disaster. Fang convinces her to stay for the Worm Drama concert.
  • Ship Tease: With Ms. Roberts at the end of episode 8.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Even though she's giving Fang and their band a fair chance, she doesn't hesitate to tell them that their music doesn't cut it and that Fang needs to improve if they want to score a Battle of the Bands audition. Trish takes this as LJ being mean and hating their music, and so is critical of Fang's trust in her judgement.

Saeed (left) and Sabah (right).

Sabah voiced by: Dahlia Salem
Saeed voiced by: Abe Bueno-Jallad

Fang and Naser's parents that are out of town.

  • Dreadful Musician: Saeed has no talent for music, but he tried in college, something Sabah remembers with disdain.
  • Hands-Off Parenting: According to Fang, they weren't around much growing up, leaving Fang to help entertain and take care of Naser.
  • Parental Favoritism: Implied; Fang being nonbinary and pursuing a music career instead of something more "respectable" meant they've since pinned all their hopes on Naser growing up to be the "normal" child of the family. Naser admits in episode 7 that he's chafing under the pressure because trying so hard to meet their vision for him means he hasn't had a chance to figure himself out yet.
  • So Proud of You: In the final video call, Sabah shows pride in Fang, Naser and their friends for putting together their final concert.
  • Wanted a Gender-Conforming Child: Sabah openly refuses to accept Fang's identity, intentionally deadnaming them and using "she/her" pronouns. She does, finally, refer to them as 'Fang' in their final phone call.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: The asteroid panic causes them to be unable to leave the island, but they insist they'll be home soon. Things unfortunately get worse and they never make it back, so Fang and Naser don't get to see them in person again before the asteroid hits.

    Swamp Babies

From left to right: Trent, Nick, and Curtis.

Nick voiced by: Allegra Clark
Trent voiced by: Abe Bueno-Jallad

Another popular band in Caldera Bay, and Worm Drama's biggest rival.

  • Delinquent Hair: Nick has an undercut and very long hair on top that hangs over his face.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Fang doesn't show outright hostility towards them like Trish and Reed do and admits they are good on a technical level. Trent at one point tries to recruit Fang into their band as well, showing they respect Worm Drama musically on some level too.
  • Group Hug: Trent pulls Nick and Curtis into one of these in the final episode.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite their attitude, they're shown to respect Worm Drama's talents, even if they won't admit it outright. And in the final episode, they attend Worm Drama's concert together, even crying and hugging each other during "Pretty Heroes", showing they're not as bad as they appeared.
  • Manly Tears: Trent and Curtis shed these during the "Pretty Heroes" performance.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Nick has streaks of dark blue dyed in his light blue hair.
  • The Quiet One: Of the three members, Curtis is the only one that doesn't speak.
  • The Rival: To Worm Drama. With Swamp Babies being one of the biggest bands in town and having won Battle of the Bands several times already, they're the main obstacle Worm Drama has to overcome.
  • Tattoo as Character Type: Both Nick and Curtis are covered in tattoos — Nick with black snakes and Curtis with flowers — to show off their "alt-boy" aesthetic.

    Braxus

Braxus/Mammot

Click to see his true form.

"I will do what I should have done centuries ago! Reduce this mewling world to dust!!!"

The antagonist of the "Legends and Lore" sessions. An evil god summoned by the Cult of the Final Days, his ultimate goal is to destroy the world.

  • Allegorical Character: He's symbolic of Reed's growing anxiety of the impending asteroid. In the same way that the asteroid begins as something talked about in passing to becoming an imminent threat to the characters' lives, Braxus is only mentioned in the first session, but starts becoming active at the end of the second and is an inevitable confrontation in the final.
  • Angelic Abomination: His One-Winged Angel resembles a dinosaur-like biblical angel.
  • Big Bad: Of the "Legends and Lore" games.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: If the player has high affinity with Reed at the end of the first session, the unlocked photo shows Braxus in his true form on Reed's gamemaster screen.
  • Eldritch Abomination: An anxient god of the apocalypse, and looks the part, especially in his true form.
  • Entitled to Have You: He sees himself as entitled to have Fey as his follower because of everything he's given them. When he's rejected, he throws a tantrum, kicking off the second half of his fight.
"You dare betray me? Your magic, it comes from ME. Your past? Comes from ME! Everything you are! Everything you will ever become! ME!"
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: According to him, Fey was his favorite disciple and wants them to join him again.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: He has a pair of eyes on the wings on his lower hips. Even worse in his true form, where he has eyes on his arms, wings, and the halo carried on his back.
  • Final Boss: He's this to the "Legends and Lore" games, fought in two phases.
  • The Gloves Come Off: He feigns defeat early into his boss fight in order to try to convince Fey to join his side, by revealing that Keph is their brother and Fey was once his disciple. When this fails, Braxus takes on his One-Winged Angel form and stops holding back against the heroes.
  • I Know Your True Name: Speaking his true name, Mammot, grants Fey the power to be able to defeat him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He's only mentioned during the first session, but once he becomes more active at the end of the second session by showing Fey a vision of the apocalypse, this sets the tone for the final session's dark, bleak tone.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: When his disciple Fey turned on him, he erased both their and Keph's memories, making the siblings forget each other, and then left Fey for dead. He restores Fey's memories in the final session in a bid to convince them to join him again.
  • Light Is Not Good: He has a shining white body, and he's also the main antagonist.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: Once he's defeated, the portal he came from turns in on itself, sucking in him and the heroes to their deaths.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: His only goal is to destroy the world.
  • One-Winged Angel: After Fey speaks his true name and gains the power to beat him, he reveals his true form: a monstrous, angelic, dinosaur-like abomination with extra limbs, eyes, and teeth.
  • Tantrum Throwing: Once he changes to his true form, he throws a tantrum at Fey's betrayal and throws bolts of lightning at the party. Reed points out how immature he's behaving.
  • Vertebrate with Extra Limbs: His true form has four pairs of arms, two in front and two on his back.
  • We Can Rule Together: He offers Fey a chance to abandon their friends and join him in destroying the world after revealing Fey was once The Dragon to him, and his favorite disciple, before they turned on him.
