The Main Trio

     Appare Sorano
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400842.jpg
Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese), Lee George (English)
A genius engineer from Japan. He comes from a family of wealthy tradesman, and the only person there who appears to respect his talent is his sister. When he realizes his parents are going to give up on him, he uses a steam boat he built to escape and accidentally drags Kosame along with him. They wind up stranded at sea for a time, but are rescued by an American ship and brought to California.
  • Anime Hair: His style would be very unlikely both today and in the time period the show is set.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: His vehicle designs end up as this in some form or another:
    • His car was built out of the remains of a steam boat, needs coal to keep it running and needs several additional levers in order to make it drive properly. It breaks down partway through the first leg and has to be towed to the second checkpoint by Xiaoleng. he continuously upgrades the engine to include a booster, which comes in use when stopping a train rigged with explosives by Gil and his henchmen from blowing up Chicago Station.
    • His segway-styled scooter is even more improbable than the steam car, being a clockwork creation that somehow can travel long distances without winding down.
  • Badass Driver: He turns into a completely different person while racing, although this also makes Kosame scream for dear life.
  • Character Development: Appare started out as aloof and self-centered, but as the show continues on, he slowly starts to care about people and interacts with them more often. This is most likely due to Kosame's influences that makes Appare become a better person.
  • The Engineer: He created a steam-powered boat all on his own and created his own steam-powered car from it within weeks of arriving to America. He also makes his own mini weapons when he needs to fight like an electric net and a fireworks rocket.
  • Facial Markings: Has some red dots on the sides of his mouth.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: He only wears a glove on his right hand, a goggle for his right eye, and a bracelet on his left ankle. His coveralls and pigtails are also uneven.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Something his family doesn't approve of, and which he has gotten into trouble with both them and the law for.
  • Gratuitous English: His Catchphrase when about to race "Here We Go!"
  • Great Escape: He manages to easily break himself out of his jail cell with a screwdriver and walk away as if he was never arrested in the first place. His subsequent escape on his steamboat doesn't go over as well thanks to Kosame's interference.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Can stay up for days on end, but when he finally goes to sleep, it takes nothing short of of an interesting situation to wake him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers an extended one after Kosame gets shot to the point of giving up on inventing. He gets better once Kosame recovers and talks some sense into him.
  • I Choose to Stay: After winning the race, Appare tells Kosame that he's staying in America so that he can work on the next trending invention: the airplane.
  • No Social Skills: The guy lacks awareness, ignores most social norms and tends to be pretty blunt when talking.
  • Tsundere: As his character develops, Appare can show a sweet side towards others, even if he tries to deny it.
  • What Is This Feeling?: While Appare, his team, and the racers were camping, Appare tries in his own awkward way to help the other racers in non-engineering work. He hilariously fails to do these kinds of work. Later on, he asks Kosame about the weird feeling he's feeling in himself, acting quite frustrated as to why he can't understand it. Kosame assures to him that he's starting to feel care for others.

     Kosame Isshiki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400841.jpg
Voiced by: Seiichirō Yamashita; Mutsumi Tamura (Young) (Japanese), Ivan Jasso (English)
Kosame is a skilled Kendo master from Japan. He comes from an old money noble family, and is one day asked to keep an eye on Appare and to help reign in his unruly behavior. This results in Kosame being stranded in America and helping Appare to win a cross country race in the hopes of using the prize money to finance his trip back home.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kosame most of the time is a placid and kind person, but he's still a trained samurai who can kill if he feels genuinely threatened. Most bandits would be lucky to just get knocked out by the blunt edge of his sword.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves the others from being lynched at the hands of Gil's goons in episode 8.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: His brows are pretty big, a trait that seems to run in his family as his little sister has them too.
  • But Now I Must Go: After winning the race, Kosame decides to head back to Japan. But in the last minute, he changed his mind and decided to stay with Appare and Hototo so that they can continue their work together as a team. And he sent letters to his family in Japan so that they could know that he's doing fine in the West.
  • Butt-Monkey: The world just loves making him get into difficult situations and having him get no respect from anyone, even Appare views him as nothing more than a tag along early on.
  • Childhood Friends: He and Appare used to be this before they distanced. The main reason Appare's family asked him to look after him was because of their previous friendship.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Tries to keep Appare focused and not being rude while talking.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Gil considers him this when they properly meet, surprised that Kosame was able to take down his men despite him not seeing through the former's charade until being outright told.
  • Disney Death: Seemingly dies after Taking the Bullet for Appare when Gil attempts to shoot him. The next episode has Appare stuck in a Heroic BSoD for the first half until Kosame heals and plays a prank on him.
  • The Drag-Along: He really didn't want to leave Japan, cross the entire Pacific Ocean and race across America.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Has terrible driving skills compared to Appare. Hototo remarks that he could do better than Kosame.
  • The Dutiful Son: The main reason he followed Appare (before getting stuck) was to honor his clan.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He carries his family's traditional katana and wakizashi for combat.
  • The Leader: Considers himself this, even naming the team he, Appare and Hototo have become "Team Kosame".
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Despite his Butt-Monkey status, when the time finally comes when he has no choice but to get serious, he proves that he is extremely skilled.
  • Martial Pacifist: He doesn't condone needless fighting and when he does fight, he mostly goes for knocking out his opponents.
  • Naked Freak-Out: The target of one by Xiaoleng, Sophia, and later Al, when he casually walks out of a changing room naked at the hot springs the racers are at, unaware of it being a co-ed bath.
  • Nice Guy: Kosame is quite the polite gentleman and always looks out for the wellbeing of people.
  • Samurai Ponytail: Fitting for an old-school samurai, he has this style.
  • Supreme Chef: Because he took over household duties after his mother's death, he learned how to be a great cook.
  • Taking the Bullet: When Gil tries to shoot Appare, he gets in the way and takes the shot instead.
  • Team Pet: Adopts a prairie dog partway through the first part of the race after rescuing it from the Bad Brothers, he calls it Hototo and makes it the group's mascot.
  • Trauma Button: Because of an event in his childhood when his mother was killed, and he couldn't do anything about it, he has a panic attack whenever he has to draw his blade in a life-or-death situation. He comes to terms with this in Episode 8.

     Hototo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400857.jpg
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki (Japanese), Emi Lo (English)
A young Native American out for revenge. An outlaw with a snake tattoo on his neck murdered his father and stole his family's land, and he thinks that joining the race might be his best shot at tracking them down. Appare lets him join the gang because of his outstanding navigation and survival tools.
  • Character Development: He started out with wanting revenge in the beginning, but after Kosame defeats the snake tattooed outlaw who wronged him, Hototo lets go of his anger and softens up to the main cast.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has a snaggletooth that's prominently in his mouth.
  • Facial Markings: Has three blue dots on his forehead.
  • I Choose to Stay: After winning the race, Appare and Kosame allow Hototo to send the prize money to his family. He then decides to stay with Appare and Kosame (who also chose to stay) so that they can continue their work together.
  • Informed Attribute: He's repeatedly stated to be very skilled at survival and wilderness navigation, but the closest thing that's shown him tracking a group of men on horses. Which consists of noting that they're headed in the direction of a nearby town.
  • Insistent Terminology: Really doesn't like being called "boy".
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Appare and Kosame.
  • Native Guide: Plays the role for Appare and Kosame due to knowing America's terrain and how to survive in the wilderness far better than they do.
  • Wise Beyond His Years: He might be only 11, but he's pretty calm and mature, with many skills from his past travelings.

Al and Sophia

     Al Lyon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400856.jpg
Voiced by: Soma Saito (Japanese), Brandon McInnis (English)
  • Bad Boss: While nowhere near as bad as Seth is towards his personal maintenance crew, he does snap at them when they try to repair his car after it's shot by Gil's henchmen.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: One of the nicer people in the series, but gets utterly pissed when Gil kidnaps Sophia and stops at nothing to get her back.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Drops to the floor after just one shot of Tequila.
  • Determinator: Vows to bring back Sophia at any cost, even if it means having to ride a horse or have his car get repaired without brakes.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After losing to Appare on a practice race he becomes more openly friendly and willing to help Appare and his friends.
  • Embarrassing Hobby: Gets caught in the act of using Appare's scooter that was gifted to Sophia when the former arrives to ask for assistance with Xiaoeing's race against David.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His last name has been spelled as "Lyon" in the series' promotional materials, "Leon" by Funimation, and "Lion" by T2 Studio's in-show graphics representing the racers and their placements. The subtitles and graphics both later settle on the first spelling.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: When the racers are blocked off from the shortcut through Death Valley, he does the motions for one of these when he asks Xiaoleng if she knows any kung-fu that could clear the debris in their way.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a girly faced teenager whose hair is arranged in a braid.
  • Royal Rapier: His weapon is a rapier.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: He treats placing third in the race as this, despite still getting the cash prize for that position.
  • Shout-Out: His car is basically just Dick Dastardly's Mean Machine without the jet engine and painted white.
  • Sword and Gun: He's equipped with both his rapier and his revolver. He switches between the two depending on the situation he's in.
  • You Monster!: Refers to Gil as this after witnessing him shoot a goon for stepping out of line and outright calls him a bastard after finding out that Sophia has been taken by his gang as a hostage.
  • Take Me Instead: Tries to convince Gil into letting Sophia go in exchange for himself as the hostage. Gil declines, preferring his current prisoner and telling him to force the sponsors of the race to give him all the prize money.

     Sophia Taylor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400851.jpg
Voiced by: Fumiko Orikasa (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English)
  • Cool Big Sis: She used to be Al's nanny and she treats him like a younger brother.
  • Damsel in Distress: She is kidnapped and held hostage by Gil during the climax and has to be rescued by the racers.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Downplayed, but she manages to beat TJ in a drinking contest and gets disappointed when he can't stomach any more.
  • Nice Girl: She's very pleasant and threats others with respect.

Other Racers

     Jin Xiaoleng
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400853.jpg
Voiced by: Sora Amamiya (Japanese), Suzie Yeung (English)
The daughter of a Chinese immigrant family who was taught Kenpo by her father. She loves racing and cars, but the sexist staff at the race track she works at belittle her interests. Some help from Appare allows her to win a race against the track's lead racer, convincing the staff that she's better suited for the cross country race than him.
  • Action Girl: Easily beats Kosame when he tries to attack her and puts David into an arm lock when he also tries the same over a remark aimed at his expense.
  • All Asians Know Martial Arts: She's been shown training in kung-fu, and can give some savage punches and strong kicks.
  • Badass Driver: Part of her motivation is to show that she's this to her peers, which succeeds when her manager praises her for not losing control when spinning out of the race between her and David. After winning second in the Trans-American, she becomes one of the team's drivers.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Delivers an epic one to Gil's female goon when the gang storms his compound. Then winds up on the receiving end of a rather violent one when the racers storm Gil's hideout.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Her reaction to the rest of the racing team she works for when they brush off and outright mock her dreams to be a racer. She eventually gets it after they see her in action and offer to help her enter the Trans-American.
  • Facial Markings: Her eyeshadow works in a similar fashion as she's never seen without it on.
  • Meaningful Appearance: A Chinese character, who ties her small ponytail up with an opened Chinese fan.
  • Men Are Generic, Women Are Special: Her dreams of being a racer is, at least initially, treated as such. That said, she's treated no different than her male cohorts when it comes to people assaulting her as neither Kosame, David, or Gil are above trying to attack her; and the racing spectators throw stones at her as she jumps in to protect Hototo when he halts the race.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: For the Before-the-race Dinner, she dresses in an elegant qipao and puts on make-up. It causes Kosame and Hototo to blush.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's explicitly the only woman racing.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: The only character to be shown with different outfits throughout the show that isn't a swimsuit- her main outfit, the above-mentioned qipao, and an all blue ensemble she wears during the last few episodes.

     Dylan G. Ordene
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400849.jpg
Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Robert McCollum (English)
  • The Alcoholic: He's constantly seen drinking or drunk, although that doesn't mean his shooting skills gets duller.
  • Burn the Orphanage: The reason why he wants to avenge the death of his wife, and something Gil taunts him with after getting his ass kicked after a fight.
  • Guns Akimbo: Wields two revolvers.
  • The Rival: After being pardoned for his crimes, he becomes this to TJ. They were also both love rivals for Dylan's wife when they were younger.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His outfit and car are purple, and he's a very skilled driver and gunman.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He and TJ put aside their past indifferences in order to take down Gil T. Cigar together.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and TJ were very good friends together during their time in the Thousand Three. They rekindle their friendship when they needed to defeat Gil T. Cigar.

     TJ
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400847.jpg
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese), Ace Anderson (English)
  • Agent Peacock: Dresses flamboyantly and his car is vibrant pink, but he's a feared outlaw and a pretty good driver.
  • The Dreaded: Part of being a member of the Thousand Three.
  • Guns Akimbo: Like Dylan, he also wields two revolvers.
  • Hidden Eyes: His eyes are always covered by his headband. He claims that he can't show them because of how "bright" they are. He takes the headband off in the final episode before engaging Gil in one last battle.
  • It's Personal: Wants to kill Gil himself over his defeat during their first fight.
  • Killer Outfit: Quite literally as he has a noose tied around his neck. This bites him in the ass when Gil grabs it during their fight.
  • The Rival: To Dylan after he left the Thousand Three to go legit. They were also love rivals for Dylan's wife, although TJ gave up so that Dylan could be happy.
  • Scenery Censor: His hair acts as one when Appare and Kosame exit a hot spring's changing room naked.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He and Dylan decided to work together to take down Gil T. Cigar.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Doesn't go through with killing Gil after Dylan tells him that he'd be only confirming Gil's point about power being the only thing that rules and hands him over to the law instead after some arm pulling.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Dylan were best friends together in the Thousand Three. Their friendship is rekindled when they worked as a team to defeat Gil T. Cigar.

     Gil T. Shiga
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Tristan the Bad, Japanese), Tyson Rinehart (Tristan, English); Kenjiro Tsuda (Richard)
One of the less flamboyant drivers involved in the race. He's a calm man who appears to hate conflict. In truth, he's a notoriously violent outlaw and the last member of the Thousand Three.
  • Antagonist Title: For episode 6, which bears the name "I Am Gil!"
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite his imposing stature, Tristan is one of the nicest outlaws out there, just don't try to harm Hototo, or he will show no mercy. The real Gil serves as a more violent take on the trope, using the Nice Guy facade as Richard to hide his true intentions.
  • The Big Guy: The largest member of the cast.
  • Cool Mask: Wears one of these.
  • The Dreaded: While the Thousand Three are all considered notorious, Gil is the most feared of them. Ultimately subverted in that while the real Gil most definitely fits the bill, even getting his men to kill the other racers, this one doesn't.
  • The Faceless: About the only things seen are his eyes in the intro and in episode 6. Everything else is covered up by his mask. That is until episode 7, when he takes it off and reveals his true intentions.
  • Family Extermination: It's implied that he had a hand in killing Hototo's family. Only this isn't the case.
  • Friend to All Children: Tristan befriends Hototo after he and chase reveal that they weren't the ones that killed the boy's father.
  • Glass Eye: The actual Gil has one of these to replace his right one, it's also black and red.
  • The Ghost: Next to nothing is known about the real Gil, which proved to be perfect cover for the brothers to work with as Nothing Is Scarier than a man that no one knows of beyond his reputation. It worked until they couldn't keep up with the charade anymore once the audience started attacking Hototo. Not that it stops them from continuing to dupe people out of pies in episode 9.
    • Finally averted with the real Gil, who after an Early-Bird Cameo appearance at the end of episode 3, is shown in full at the end of episode 8, confirming that he's posing as Richard.
  • Gonk: Downplayed example with Tristan, who has a prominently visible tooth poking out his bottom lip.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: What he actually turns out to be, complete with a childish face and a Simpleton Voice. He drops his disguise because he can't stand to see a child getting hurt.
  • Morality Chain: He may be a Kindhearted Simpleton, but his smarter and more ruthless brother Chase is surprisingly willing to acquiesce when he thinks they're going a bit too far, meaning he serves as the de facto conscience of the gang.
  • Red Herring: The true identity of Gil is played with twice until The Reveal at the end of episode 8. The first involving Tristan, who was hyped up as the character in both his introduction and in promotional materials leading up to the show's release. After that in episode 8, the killer of Hototo's father was hyped to be him until he dies at Kosame's blade.
  • The Reveal: He is not the real Gil, but rather Chase's brother Tristan, who took the name to be intimidating.
  • Parental Substitute: Tristan for Hototo, to the point where he goes Papa Wolf on one of Gil's subordinantes and smashes him through a wall when the guy harms the kid.
  • Scars Are Forever: The actual Gil is shown with a cross-shaped scar on his right cheek; with another straight scar over the left. He waves these off as Richard as simply battle scars.
  • Sibling Team: With Chase.
  • Vader Breath: Does this with the mask on. Preferring to let Chase do all the talking at first, This lasts until episode 7, when he reveals his true identity.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact that he isn't the real Gil and just Chase's brother is basically nothing short of this.
    • Also applies to the real Gil as of episode 8.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Tristan of all people delivers one of these to Appare when the latter refuses to even visit the wounded Kosame during his Heroic BSoD moment.

     Richard Riesman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/408702.jpg
Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (Japanese), Brandon Potter (English)
  • Alliterative Name: Richard Riesman.
  • Appeal to Force: His guiding philosophy. He's incredibly talented at violence and intimidation, and therefore he deserves to rule the otherwise-ungoverned parts of America in accordance with his hedonistic whims. Unfortunately for everyone else, he really is good enough to pull it off.
  • Bad Boss: His murderous asshole behavior is not limited to the racers. He shoots a goon in cold blood for stepping out of line and treats Dylan and TJ as traitors for taking part in the race. Not even his elite squad are safe as he kills one of them for not slaughtering the protagonists when they storm his hideout and letting Chase find out his exact whereabouts. That said there are a few who seem to be genuinely loyal to him, even dying for his name.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Comes with the territory of being an outlaw and leader of a gang.
  • Bounty Hunter: Mentions to Kosame he's one.
  • Curbstomp Battle: On the delivering end as he easily plows through the racers, including his former associates, with ease in his first appearance with the only one to even get close to a hit in at any point being Xaioleng. He delivers a far more brutal one to the whole crew in the final episode until Appare burns his jacket, then ends up on the receiving end of one by Dylan and TJ, who is hellbent on killing him personally.
  • The Dreaded: He's a living reminder of how shallow American civilization still is in the early twentieth century, and everyone in the country regards him with the appropriate terror.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes always appear closed. This is because his right is the most infamous artificial eye in the country.
  • Fastest Gun in the West: He's the fastest gun in America, period. If he wants someone dead, they've usually got a hole in them before anyone notices the gun in his hand. It's implied to be one of the reasons why his gang are so loyal to someone so obviously Ax-Crazy - he can always kill you before you even think about defying him, let alone killing him.
  • Hostage Situation: Foists this onto the heroes, and especially towards Al, as he and his gang take Sophia as their prisoner while demanding the combined total of winnings ($1.51 million).
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Fear and greed. He's an unpredictable and sublimely talented killer who can get anything he wants through properly-applied violence. Help him, and he'll share. Mildly inconvenience him, and you're dead.
  • Invincible Villain: In episode 10, he effortlessly defeats all of the races without any of them even succeeding in laying a finger on him.
  • Join or Die: Attempts to do this with the main characters by offering them the opportunity to join him and his gang after being impressed by their attempts to attack him. When they refuse, he just decides to kill them instead.
  • Karma Houdini: Mostly because anyone who tries to stop him or his gang get killed for their troubles. It ends when Dylan and TJ take him on one last time and hand him over to the police.
  • Kick the Dog: His specialty as the most feared outlaw in existence. In episode 10 alone; he shoots Xiaoling's car, knocks out TJ in a Curbstomp Battle after insulting him, tortures both Dylan and Hototo over the deaths of their loved ones, kidnaps Sophia, shoots Kosame in the torso, sets fire to Appare's car with a bottle of whisky and a lit cigarette, and even kills the Ungreatful Bastard train owner he was employed under by throwing him out of his train before hijacking it and blowing away a carriage to stop the Bad Brothers in their tracks. Then as if to rub it in, he blows up the bridge and has his goons shoot out the other cars so that none of them can follow him.
  • Large Ham: Even when he's proving that he's the most feared individual in the USA, he goes all in with the thematics. Especially when he's mocking Dylan over the loss of his wife.
  • Masquerade: Takes part in the race to hide the fact that he's the real Gil hired by the people who make the trains run.
  • Nice Guy: He's friendly and apologizes to Kosame after cutting him off with erratic driving, as well as giving him some useful information for free. Whether or not this is a facade or he genuinely is that nice remains to be seen. It turns out that this is a ruse and he is nothing more than a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: All he needed to do to be Richard was shut his eyes and flatten his hair. Kosame is the only one who doesn't immediately put two and two together until being told by Gil himself.
  • Psycho for Hire: He was hired by a train magnate to sabotage the race and stop the automobile industry from outmatching train travel. But he's mostly in it to cause carnage, show off the might of his gang, preferring to just take the money and murder his employer.
  • Satanic Archetype: He's about as close as you can get to being Satan without being a literal demon. He's a snake-themed outlaw king in red and black with a host of nicknames and a scar in the shape of an inverted cross, and he derives his power and authority entirely from his talent at committing evil. Also, making deals with him is a horrible idea that will end extremely poorly for you. He even mockingly apologies to Sophia that prayers don't work when he's around.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has a rather noticeable one in the shape of a cross on his right cheek and another small one on his left.
  • Sore Loser: He doesn't take his defeat by TJ and Dylan kindly and furiously threatens everyone before getting sent to jail.
  • Southern Gothic Satan: A classic example. He's a Satanic Archetype outlaw king of the Old West whose genius for death and depravity borders on the supernatural.
  • Walking Spoiler: As already mentioned, the fact that he's the real Gil.
  • Western Terrorists: A rather literal example as revealed in episode 12, he and his gang plan on setting off bombs in Chicago to spread his fear and terror to the world stage.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He is last seen in the trunk of TJ's car as he's taken to the police. Given the Time Skip that happens after this, it's safe to assume he was executed offscreen for his crimes.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: A legendary heartless and ruthless outlaw that is willing to kill anyone and destroy anything in his path to get what he wants, even those who work with him.
  • World's Best Warrior: Gil is effectively the king of the American badlands despite being a volatile, unpredictable Bad Boss whose staggering cruelty has left him with a 0% Approval Rating, and this is why. He's a fighter of peerless skill and absolute lethality who can swiftly overwhelm even other expert warriors like Kosame and the other two members of the Thousand Three, and everyone else simply doesn't stand a chance.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Inverted, he does this on the guy who hired him to sabotage the race by throwing him and the chair he's sitting in out of the train they're on.
  • You Will Be Spared: Decides to spare Appare's life after Kosame takes the bullet meant for him. This is also the only reason why Sophia isn't being treated like a sex slave by his gang, as he was saving her for his bombing of Chicago station.
  • 0% Approval Rating: He didn't become king of the Old West through loyalty or affection, but by being so utterly undefeatable and so terrifyingly cruel that submitting to him (or, better, working with him) was the only way to make a semi-decent life for yourself. He doesn't inspire positive emotions in anyone, and he doesn't try.

Other Characters

     Chase the Bad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/412282.jpg
Voiced by: Tetsu Inada (Japanese), Cris George (English)
  • The Dragon: Appears to be this for Gil.
  • The Dreaded: Being Gil's crony and crashing a formal dinner from out of the blue certainly helps.
  • Faking the Dead: Pulls this on one of Gil's leiutenents so that he could follow both him and Seth to where Gil is hiding. Gil shoots said lieutenant for this.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's an outlaw for sure, but he's also one of the most reasonable characters. And if you earn his trust, he'll definitely be there to cover your back.
  • Morality Pet: His Kindhearted Simpleton brother Tristan, who he genuinely cares for and respects the opinions of. The big guy's basically his surrogate conscience.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When one of his goons suggest just blowing up the competition, he rejects it on the grounds that it would get the race cancelled and the prize will be gone as with it.
  • Sibling Team: With Tristan/Fake Gil.
  • Walking Spoiler: As of episode 7, him not being an actual lieutenant of the Thousand Three and instead is part of a duo with his brother.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Reassures Hototo that neither he or his brother would ever hurt women or children, and were not the ones who killed the boy's father.

     Seth Rich Cutter
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400845.jpg
Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu (Japanese), Blake McNamara (English)
  • Bad Boss: He's a jerk to anyone who isn't Dylan. In episode 9, he tells his engineers after they've been working all day that they need to do another nine hours of work on Dylan's car and if any of them try to take a break he'll fire them. Although, this behavior of his is due to the fact that he was once an engineer himself and didn't want to face his past failures. He gets better later on.
  • Benevolent Boss: Runs one of the major automotive sponsors of the race and is Dylan's boss.
  • Character Development: Seth started out as a jerk, but his interactions with the main cast have softened up his heart. He's even brought back his engineering skills to the test because of the Gil T. Cigar incident.
  • Non-Action Guy: About the only one in the main cast who isn't a fighter or outlaw of any kind. But he was willing to face up against Gil T. Cigar himself in order to stall for time so that the main cast could arrive.
