Adam's Family

Adam’s biological parents originally hailed from Atlas, having lived in the poverty-stricken town beneath the floating city, with Adam’s mother working for the SDC since before her son was even born. After their deaths, Adam was adopted into the Belladonna family, the family that led the country of Menagerie since it was gifted to the Faunus.

    Cerise Taurus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cerise_height.png

“I will when you’re older. I promise.”

Adam’s biological mother, Cerise was a Faunus worker for the SDC, having worked there for most of her life. Despite her hard life and lack of support for Adam’s father, Cerise was a kind hearted woman and a good mother to her son. After Adam’s 10th birthday, Cerise collapsed and later died due to being overworked and exhaustion, leaving her son all alone.

  • All There in the Manual: Her full name hasn't been mentioned in the story, but was confirmed by the writer.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: She was a good mother to Adam and tried to give him a childhood, being the one good point in his life, but unfortunately she passed away while he was still a child.
  • Foil: To Clementine. Both were women born in Atlas and experienced both poverty and discrimination, though they don’t let their pain affect their parenting skills and were remembered as good mothers by their children even years after their unfortunate deaths. However, while Clementine was a human who found happiness in her marriage and her work as a Huntress, Cerise remained a slave in all but name to the SDC and died because of exhaustion, left to look after Adam alone because her lover abandoned her.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's a cow Faunus just like Adam, but has ears rather than horns.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Cerise is French meaning “cherry”, connected to the shade of red that her hair is.
    • Taurus is Latin meaning “Bull”, with Cerise’s Faunus heritage being that of a cow.
  • Missing Mom: To Adam. She unfortunately passed away when he was just 10.
  • Posthumous Character: Cerise died long before the story begins, but is an important character due to her death leading directly to Adam’s branding and starting his journey to the White Fang.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: She has a duller shade of red in her hair along with green eyes, and is Adam’s biological mother. Her death is what pushed Adam’s descent into a violent young man, though he eventually pulls himself away from that path.

     Blake Belladonna

For more information about Blake Belladonna, go to Characters/Team RWBY.

    Ghira Belladonna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ghira_height.png

“Ghira’s vision died when he left us all here.”

The father of Blake Belladonna and the adoptive father of Adam Taurus, Ghira was the original leader of the White Fang before leaving in disgust, allowing Sienna Khan to take over and turn the organisation that he had led into a terrorist organisation.

  • Actual Pacifist: Ghira despises any form of violence and led the White Fang with pacifism in mind. Deconstructed in that his extreme pacifism, while palatable to many humans, made any meaningful progress slow and frustrated many Faunus. This inability to compromise his morals led to Ghira nearly being killed by humans, destroys his relationship with Adam when he's forced to kill them to defend Ghira, and removes him from the High Leader position in the very organisation he created.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: He's Adam's adoptive father in AZRE, as opposed to just being his former leader and enemy in RWBY.
  • Animal Eyes: Like Blake, Ghira has slit pupils and is a panther Faunus.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats, just like Blake.
  • Category Traitor: He’s seen as this by the White Fang, especially Adam, when he tried to make the White Fang attempt to fix bridges with humans.
  • Disappeared Dad: Unwillingly becomes one to Blake and Adam, after they ran away and hid in the Vale branch of the White Fang.
  • Fairytale Motif: To match the allusions of the important White Fang members, Ghira's allusion is Bagheera from The Jungle Book.
  • The Leader: He was formerly the creator and High Leader of the White Fang, until he was forced to step down and be replaced by his commander; Sienna. However, he is still the Chieftan of Asilé, the capital of Menagerie.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Although he hadn't made a physical appearance in the story itself, Ghira is a panther Faunus like Blake, and so has the ears, claws and slit pupils that his daughter inherited.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Ghira is a name deriving from the Hindu name Bagheera, his allusion.
    • Belladonna is the name of a poisonous flower that is purple in colour, with Ghira's defining colour being purple.

    Hajimu Belladonna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hajimu_height.png

“Enjoying the sights, Adam?”

The mother of Blake Belladonna and the adoptive mother of Adam Taurus, Hajimu lived her younger years outside of Menagerie, watching the Faunus Rights Revolution threaten to tear countries apart once more. After the war and the White Fang was created, she joined and met Ghira Belladonna, the two marrying before she gave birth to Blake. While her daughter grew up, Hajimu accepted an orphaned Adam into the family. However, Ghira left the White Fang shortly after being badly wounded and their two children fled to Vale, Hajimu not seeing her daughter or son again.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Her appearance in AZRE is different from her appearance in RWBY:
    • Her eyes are blue instead of gold.
    • Her hair is grey instead of blake.
    • Her Faunus heritage is a wolf instead of a cat, with her ears longer and more triangular in shape.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Whereas they didn't have much of a relationship in RWBY, with Adam ordering the assassination on Kali and her family, Hajimu is his adoptive mother in AZRE.
  • Animal Motifs: Wolves.
  • Fairytale Motif: Raksha from The Jungle Book.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's a wolf Faunus, and so has wolf ears.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Hajimu is Japanese for "blueish-black", referencing her mix of blue and black in her design.
  • Missing Mom: Like Ghira, she's unwillingly this to Blake and Adam after they ran away.

Zanthus' Family

A poor family that travelled all across the continent of Anima, Zanthus’ family was abandoned by their son years before the story begins, but the scars of the past have remained with their eldest child for years after the fact.

    Xanthe Nemeós

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xanthe_height.png

“Dad always said I had a lotta it. Guess he was right about one thing.”

The head of the Nemeós family, and Zanthus and Argenta’s father, Xanthe was a Faunus that once came from a small fishing village in Vale. For unknown reasons, he left, travelling across Remnant until he met his future wife in Samson's Valley. After having two children, his behaviour worsened. Abusive and cruel, he pushed his children to be stronger, subjecting them to harsh training and horrible words. Eventually, Zanthus ran away, and his status is currently unknown.

  • Abusive Parents: As well as being physically abusive to both his children, he is also emotionally and verbally abusive to his entire family, treating Zanthus’ and Argenta’s training sessions as excuses to beat them and belittle their lack of progress. It reached the point where Zanthus abandoned his family at thirteen.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He's shown to be missing his left hand, having lost it during the Faunus Rights Revolution.
  • The Alcoholic: He drank heavily all throughout Zanthus’ childhood. Because of this negative association, Zanthus never touches alcohol as an adult, and outright hates any alcoholics he comes across, like Qrow.
  • Asshole Victim: There's not much to him beyond being Zanthus' abusive father, apart from the brief moments where Sable explains a lot of his backstory and motivations. Despite that, no one really misses him when it's found out he was killed by his wife.
  • Disappeared Dad: He became one after Zanthus ran away, having never gone to look for his son.
  • Domestic Abuse: His abusive behaviour wasn’t just restricted to his children, with Zanthus knowing that he frequently turned on Sable so much that she did everything she could to avoid his ire, including throwing her own children in the crossfire instead.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Sable reveals that Xanthe drank because of this, as he was struggling with what happened when he fought in the Faunus Rights Revolution.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Somewhat of a stretch, but Zanthus reacts negatively when Sable confesses that she killed his father, saying that even if he was a horrible human being, he was still a person and killing wasn't the answer. Later on, he confesses to Adam that, despite hating Xanthe, he's upset over his death because he no longer has the chance to meet with him and spill out all the pain and anger he had been holding onto for years.
  • Eye Scream: Has two scars over his right eye, completely blinding him.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Xanthe is a girl's name, but Xanthe is a man.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: When he was younger, Xanthe fought in the Faunus War for the rights of his people, doing bad things for good reasons. After the war, he started to delve into becoming the abusive monster his children remember him as, no longer being any better than the humans who hurt the Faunus.
  • Killed Offscreen: He was killed by Sable years before the start of AZRE, partly because she didn't want him to chase after her for running away, and partly for revenge of how he hurt her and her children.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: He and Zanthus are nothing alike. While Xanthe is a social darwinist who decided someone's worth based on how strong they were, either verbally or physically assaulting the person to get them to work to his standards, Zanthus is a peace-loving pacifist who is kind and gentle with those around him, showing maturity and patience when helping others.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He's a lion Faunus.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Xanthe is the Greek word for "yellow, or meaning "blonde haired", referring to his yellow hair. It's also the original spelling of Zanthus' name, showing just how much Xanthe pushed for his son to be like him.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: The Faunus Revolution left him mentally scarred, pushing him to drink in an attempt to forget it all.
  • Training from Hell: What he subjected Zanthus and Argenta too.
  • Walking the Earth: Essentially what his life was after leaving his home. He travelled all across Remnant, even after having a family, to the point that a life on the road was all that Zanthus remembers.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Although the extent of his abuse towards Sable is unknown, he was physically abusive to Argenta, his daughter.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Was physically abusive towards both Zanthus and Argenta.

    Sable "Sigal" Leib

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sable_height.png

“You don’t need me now. Be there for them, like I should’ve been there for you.”

Zanthus and Argenta’s mother, Sable was a native of Vacuo, growing up in the harsh desert with the rest of her clan. Because of Vacuo’s tense relations over resources and survival before the implementation of the current Headmaster, Sable grew up hardened and focused purely on herself. After marrying Xanthe, she had Zanthus and Argenta, but proved to be a neglectful mother who allowed her husband’s behaviour to continue in hopes she would avoid the brunt of it.

  • Accomplice by Inaction: Although she wasn't the one abusing her kids, Zanthus acknowledges that she saw it happen and did nothing to stop it. She admits this when she comes face to face with him in What Lies Underneath.
  • Animal Eyes: As a wildcat Faunus, she has slit pupils that Zanthus and Argenta inherited.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She saves Adam and Zanthus from Teunessian, and shortly after carries them and Qrow out of Merlot's lab just before it self-detonated.
  • But Now I Must Go: Zanthus suceeds in finding her, but Sable refuses to remain with her son since there's just too much bad blood between them for them to move on from. So, while she confesses that she still loves her son, she ultimately leaves for destinations unknown, carrying on work as an unofficial spy for Eliana.
  • The Clan: She lived in one during her life in Vacuo, having travelled all over the continent with her family. However, she left them behind when she married Xanthe.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has black slit pupils with black hair.
  • Dirty Coward: What Zanthus believes she is when they talk, and something she believes about herself.
  • Domestic Abuse: She was a victim of this at the hands of her husband. Eventually, she snapped and killed him.
  • Fairytale Motif: Though not obvious in the story, Word of God confirms she's meant to be Tzipphora from Biblical stories.
  • Foil: She can be seen as one to Cerise, Adam's mother. Both a Faunus trapped in poverty and suffered at the hands of abusive or neglectful husbands, and clearly left lasting impressions on their sons even when gone. However, while Cerise was the best mother she could be, trying to protect Adam from the evils of the world around them, Sable was quick to throw Zanthus and Argenta in the way of Xanthe to avoid being harmed herself. This ends up negatively impacting her relationship with her son, Zanthus ultimately letting her leave without a fight, while Adam remembers Cerise as the perfect role model who he misses deeply]].
  • Freudian Excuse: While doing little to protect her children from abuse is bad parenting, Sable was also a victim of said abuse herself, and growing up in Vacuo pre-Isidis City meant that survival was all that mattered to her and her family. After being isolated from them and her culture, she had nothing else but her abusive husband for company.
    • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Despite that, Zanthus doesn't hide the fact that she wasn't a good mother. Regardless of the bad blood between them, he does care about her in the end, and so is working as hard as he can to find her in Vacuo. He succeeds in What Lies Underneath.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: She genuinely believes that there was no other way to deal with Xanthe other than kill him, as she and Zanthus knew he would just chase after her if she ran away.
  • Lack of Empathy: While she does show guilt and shame for her actions towards her children, and does make sure to remind them that their abusive father was once a good man, Sable doesn't actually show any guilt or empathy when she confesses that she killed Xanthe. This, and with his own reservations about violence, deeply disturbed Zanthus.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's a wildcat Faunus, having a thick, bushy tail.
  • Mama Bear: Despite her past inability to protect her children from their father, Sable eventually shows that she does love them by killing Xanthe as revenge for hurting Zanthus and Argenta.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Sable means “Black” in Old English, connected to her dark colour scheme. As well as that, it means “sand” in French, with Sable having grown up in the deserts of Vacuo.
    • Leib means "Lion" in Hebrew, meaning she went from one tribe connected to lions to another with Xanthe and her two children all inheriting the lion traits, despite being a wildcat herself.
  • Missing Mom: She's this to Zanthus, after having been left behind when he ran away at thirteen. Even when they reunite, she decides its best that she stays away, and Zanthus doesn't try to get her to stay.
  • Parental Neglect: While she didn’t personally abuse either of her children physically, Sable was distant and neglected their emotional needs as well as barely feeding or clothing them, leaving them alone to take care of themselves. This pushed Zanthus to replace her and Xanthe as a parental figure for Argenta from a young age.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She uses plenty of purple in her outfit, as her birth name means "Violet", and while she wasn't trained at all in the Huntsmen Academies and is simply a spy, Sable is able to fight against trained Huntsmen and is feared enough to be known by name by them.
  • Sand Blaster: Her Semblance gives her control over sand, allowing Sable to break her body down for easy travelling and even carry people along with her.
  • Single Tear: Sheds one when Zanthus admits that he loves his team like his family, happy that he managed to find happiness after years of pain and fear.
  • So Proud of You: She's clearly proud of Zanthus for keeping his gentle nature even after facing so much trauma, telling him to never let it go.
  • They Died Because of You: Zanthus fully believes that Argenta's disappearance and possible death is entirely Sable's fault, because she failed as their mother. Sable pretty much agrees with him and harbours great guilt over it.
  • Walking the Earth: All her life was spent as this, due to Sable’s family travelling across Samson's Valley, even leaving sometimes to do trade in the other cities. Even when she left her home and family behind, she was forced to keep moving with Xanthe.
  • War Is Hell: Believes in this, as she notes that no one remains the same after fighting in battle.

    Argenta Nemeós

“At that moment I realised that she was still just a kid. And I… I left her behind. After promising that I would always be there for her.”

The younger sister of Zanthus, Argenta grew up in Mistral and spent most of her early childhood on the run, living in poverty while abused and neglected by her parents. Despite her closeness to her only good family member, Zanthus, she was ultimately left behind when he ran away.

  • Animal Eyes: Like Zanthus and Sable, she has slit pupils and is a lion Faunus.
  • Broken Tears: Zanthus remembers when she used to go to him after training, crying from the pain and emotional turmoil she was going through.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Argenta is Italian for "Silver", contrasting Zanthus' gold theme.
  • Training from Hell: Just like Zanthus, she was subjected to this by their father.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The last that Zanthus had seen her was when he ran away, four years before the start of AZRE. Unfortunately, that was the last time he saw her, with Argenta's current location unknown. In What Lies Underneath, Sable reveals to Zanthus that Argenta ran away a couple of years after he did, and that she has no idea where the girl could be now, or if she's even alive.

Ruri's Family

An aristocratic family that founded the floating lake village of Tsubaki, located in Northern Anima. The founder of the city, Hisui, originally came from more modest beginnings, before marrying the daughter of a noble family to fund his city. Despite their comfortable lifestyle, a few of the family members, including Ruri herself, had chosen the life of a Huntress.

    Hisui Kashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hisui_height.png

“Ruri. You have to understand that you’re not only representing yourself while you’re at Beacon. You have many responsibilities now, and when you make a bad decision, it can impact your school and us.”

Ruri and Seigyoku's father, Hisui is the patriarch of the Kashima family and founder of Tsubaki, the famous City on the Water in Northern Mistral. Quiet and thoughtful, he practices much needed patience that tempers his wife's more confrontational nature, but is still as willing to speak his mind if the situation calls for it.

  • Arranged Marriage: Given Banesaw's comments on marriage in Mistral, and that Hisui was offered Shinju's hand, their marriage was more the decision of the Maneki family than the spouses-to-be. Still, neither of them are necessarily bothered by this fact and are even Happily Married.
  • Cool Old Guy: Despite his underlying ableist attitude, Hisui is an approachable old man who actually mirrors a lot of Ruri's inquisitive nature and awe for simple things in life. Whenever his daughter is troubled or there's a problem, he's willing to give sound advice while not simply scolding her.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has green eyes and green hair.
  • Fairytale Motif: Takemikazuchi, or Kashima-no-kami, the Japanese God who guards the Namazu.
  • Family Theme Naming: As the Kashima family are named after gems, Hisui is named after jade.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: He disapproves of Ruri having left for Beacon, but still gave her a chance. When Ruri ends up losing her Semblance and is put in the hospital, Hisui agrees with his wife to remove their daughter from Beacon and bring her home, only backing down when Ruri stands up for herself.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Her and Ruri share an almost identical hairstlye, with the only difference being that Hisui wears his in a topknot, while Ruri has hers in a low bun.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Ruri inherited her fish Faunus genotype from him, with Hisui too having fins around his ears and scales on his body.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Hisui is Japanese for "Jade", connected to his green hair and green decorations on his black outfit. Jade is also considered the stone of wealth and power, with Hisui being an incredibly wealthy man and in charge of one of the biggest cities in Mistral, outside of Haven.
    • Kashima is the name of the Japanese God; Takemikazuchi, who guards the Namazu with a stone, referencing how he guards his youngest daughter, Ruri, who's allusion is the Namazu.
  • Non-Action Guy: Unlike his sister and daughters, Hisui is not a fighter at all.
  • Parents as People: Despite his attempts to connect with his daughters, Hisui did little to help his children through their emotional issues and fixation on being perfect in Ruri. On top of that, he's shown to have underlying issues with his ableism towards his deaf daughter, infantilising her and making choices on her behalf, regardless of what Ruri wants. However, everything he does is done out of genuine love and the desire to protect her from a world that had already taken the rest of his family.
  • Rags to Riches: He wasn't born into a rich family like his wife, but came into wealth through hard work.
  • Self-Made Man: Everything he has now was through his own hard work, building up Tsubaki when he was younger, and even accepting the marriage proposal from the Maneki family to help his city get through financial turmoil.

    Shinju Kashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinju_height.png

“If she wishes to take her work seriously, which you should, then we will support her decision.”

Ruri and Seigyoku's mother, Shinju Kashima was once the daughter of the Maneki family, a wealthy family who ran most of the mines in Mistral, specialising in gems and jewels. In her youth, she was married off to Hisui, and had her daughters soon after. Quick-tempered, opinionated, and intelligent, her business knowledge proved vital in getting Tsubaki off the ground, growing into the city it is known now.

  • Alliterative Family: Shinju, and her daughter Seigyoku.
  • Anger Born of Worry: The anger she shows in Heart & Soul is built up from finding her daughter in the hospital, having part of their soul permanently stolen, and having the fears of all this happening validated. Once Ruri reaffirms that she wants to stay in Beacon, Shinju calms down and apologises.
  • Animal Eyes: She has slit pupils as a cat Faunus.
  • Arranged Marriage: Her marriage to Hisui was this, though Shinju showed no negative feelings towards it and even considers herself Happily Married.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has lilac hair and purple eyes.
  • Dramatic Irony: Her comment about Ozpin not being able to understand how they feel because he has no children, as she doesn't know that Ozpin has in fact had many children over his lifetimes, and all of them have died.
  • Fairytale Motif: The Maneki Neko, or the Beckoning Cat, from Japanese folklore.
  • Family Theme Naming: Following the Kashima family being named after gems, Shinju is named after a pearl.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: A noblewoman born in wealth, her entire colour is based around purple accented with white and pink.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's a calico cat Faunus, having cat ears and a tail.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Shinju is Japanese for "Pearl", with Shinju having light lilac hair and pearl colours on her outfit, typically white, pink and lilac. While pearls in Japanese culture were often used as offering to the gods, they were also used as amulets by fishermen, connecting her to her husband and daughter.
    • Kashima, like Hisui, is connected to the Japanese God who watches over the Namazu, with Shinju being even more active in keeping Ruri under her watch.
    • Her Maiden name, Maneki, is reference to the Maneki-neko, the cat common in Japanese culture and is used for various good effects. Not only is Shinju from a wealthy family, but is a calico cat Faunus, which the original and most common Maneki-neko is.
  • Parents as People: She loves her daughters, and is willing to do anything to protect them, but her inability to accept that Ruri is a grown woman and capable of making her own decisions regardless of her disability has put a strain on their relationship. Despite her ability to apologise and accept when she's wrong, Shinju is unable to shake off her underlying ableist attitude towards her daughter.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Has purple eyes, like both of her daughters.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She's modestly dressed, loyal to her family, and shown to keep herself from confronting people straight on in public as to not embarress herself or her family. However, she's more opinionated and aggressive than the usual Yamato Nadeshiko, with her husband showing more of the traditional gentle demeanour, wisdom and humility.

    Seigyoku Kashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seigyoku_height.png

“I guess what I’m trying to say is that, I get what you’re going through. Both with this problem at the Academy… and your loss. My advice is to not push it away. Look your grief straight in the eye, and accept it. People we’ve loved are gone, but they’re not gone forever.”

Ruri's older sister, Seigyoku is a famous Huntress and considered one of the best to have come out of Haven Academy. A skilled fighter, she also displays maturity and a casual image to people around her, preferring to be herself rather than a lady of her nobility would behave.

  • The Ace: Winner of three Vytal Tournaments, graduating top of her class, and even earning a place at the Jade Palace to work under the Empress despite her young age and Faunus heritage, Seigyoku has been praised and lifted as the epitome of what a Huntress should be.
  • Action Girl: A licensed Huntress and an extraordinary fighter.
  • Always Someone Better: Is unintentionally this to Ruri. While Seigyoku was allowed far more freedoms and is constantly praised by her parents and others, Ruri was kept in a Gilded Cage due to her disability, and has to work to perfection just to be allowed to stay at Beacon.
  • Animal Eyes: As a cat Faunus like her mother, Seigyoku has slit pupils.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Not only to Ruri, her actual younger sister, but Seigyoku shows that she has this to all children. She's protective of Qiujun to the point that she prioritises his safety just the Jade Palace attack than herself.
  • Playing With Fire: Her fans use a combination of Wind and Fire Dust, allowing Seigyoku to create blasts of wind and giant fire balls at her opponents.
  • Blue Is Heroic: A Huntress, and dressed predominately in blue.
  • Broken Ace: Her life was not an easy one. After losing her aunt, who Seigyoku was very close with, and living under the suffocating society of Mistrali nobility, Seigyoku admits that she struggled and fell on hard times emotionally during her first year at Haven. It was only after her leader got through to her that she started accepting her past and move on, becoming the famous Huntress she is today.
  • Combat Hand Fan: A master of tessenjutsu (Japanese martial art using fans) she uses a pair of steel hand fans infused with Dust, able to collapse into blades similar to Ruri's.
  • Cool Big Sis: While not afraid to lecture Ruri if she makes mistakes, Seigyoku is also very close with her younger sister, willing to hear her out and give sound advice while also knowing that Ruri just wants to have her own space. Before she leaves for Mistral to accept a job in the Jade Palace, she asks Adam to keep an eye on her sister, showing a protective side as well. This starts to take a hit when she returns to Beacon and chooses to help kill Odstesteg, forever putting her in the war away from Ruri.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite her appearance, she's actually quite sexual and even jokes about Zanthus' prude attitude when talking about sexual interest in people.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: She's considered very beautiful, to the point that many of the Empress' female concubines are interested in her, and even Eirian herself notes how pretty she is.
  • Family Theme Naming: Fitting in the gem naming with the rest of her family, Seigyoku is named after a sapphire.
  • The Fettered: Deconstructed. Seigyoku is a very loyal person; to her family, kingdom and to Ozpin, to the point that she would do anything to protect them. This also means that she puts her duty over anything else, to the point that she is willing to kill Odstesteg and take the Maiden powers, despite being Odstesteg's best friend, and leave Ruri to commit to the war against Salem.
  • Friend to All Children: She's very patient and friendly with children, even the more obnoxious ones like Prince Qiujun, as she quickly strikes with a friendship with the seven year old.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's a calico cat Faunus like her mother, having the ears and tail.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Seigyoku is Japanese for "Sapphire", matching her primarily blue colour scheme and blue hair.
    • Kashima is the name of the Japanese God who watches over Namazu. However, unlike her parents overzealous attempts to mind Ruri, Seigyoku prefers to give her sister the space to grow into her own person, being there to give advice and help when needed, showing a more healthy version of the relationship.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Her character arc. Seigyoku struggles with balancing her duty to her kingdom and her unconditional love of her family, so much so that she still agonises over the choice of leaving over a year later. When talking to Empress Xia in The Bakeneko, Seigyoku starts to adopt her philsophy and becomes more willing to do whatever it takes to protect Remnant.
  • Put on the Bus: At the end of Volume 1, after spending multiple chapters with Team AZRE, Seigyoku has to leave to return to Mistral and begin her job in the prestigious Jade Palace.
    • The Bus Came Back: The Bakeneko is told from Seigyoku's point of view, showing the character's return to the story after sixty chapters.
  • Training from Hell: Blake and Weiss find out just how serious Seigyoku is with her training, waking them up at dawn to make them run through tracks filled with dangerous traps. Weiss, however, doesn't go through any of that as Seigyoku puts her through a boring task of hanging her jacket on a dummy to teach her patience and humility.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: As part of her new job working as a protector for the Empress, Seigyoku is no longer permitted to leave the Jade Palace until she retires or quits, not even to visit home. She is given permission to leave to follow up on Tyrian's attack, leaving for Vale to coordinate with Headmistress Jin.

    Kougyoku Kashima

“It’s okay… Being scared is okay, but promise me one thing. Don’t ever let that fear control your life. Okay?”

Ruri and Seigyoku's aunt, and Hisui's older sister, Kougyoku was the first Huntress to come from the Kashima family, inspiring her nieces to follow in her footsteps. When Ruri was a young child, she left to go on an unknown mission, but never came back, being labelled as deceased by her kingdom and her family.

  • Family Theme Naming: She's named after gems like her family, specifically rubies.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She was a fish Faunus like her brother.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Kougyoku is Japanese for "Ruby", referencing her bright red hair.
  • Never Found the Body: Because she died on a mission without anyone ever finding her, the family never had her body returned to be buried.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Only had a few lines in the actual story, and was mentioned a few times by her family. Apart from her desire to help people, her stubbornness, and how her demise affected her family, nothing else is known about her.

Eirian's Family

Her mother’s side hailing from Atlas and her father’s side from Menagerie, Eirian’s family consists of two vastly different lifestyles and people. While both her parents were Huntsmen, having been on the same team, the rest of her family is nowhere to be seen, Eirian having lived a life with just her parents for company.

    Icheku Zulu

“Please, son, just call me Icheku! No need for these formalities!”

Eirian's father, Icheku is an experienced Huntsman originally from Vikela in Menagerie. A ram Faunus, he once fell in love with a human, Clementine, who he would later marry and live with in his home kingdom. However, their relationship was the subject of ridicule and discrimination, which later went onto his only daughter. Despite all the hardships in his life, Icheku has remained a good father to Eirian; cheerful, energetic, and fun loving while also being there emotionally for his only child.

  • Action Dad: Although he took a temporary break from working as a Huntsman when Eirian was young, Icheku went back to it in her older years, and has shown that he hasn't grown soft in a fight one bit since his younger days.
  • Anger Born of Worry: He's considerably more aggressive and short with Qrow and the others when he finds out that Eirian is in danger. Even when they reunite later, he angrily tells her that she's staying in Gaza while he goes to rescue Ruri, though it's because he simply can't cope with the thought of losing his only child and family left.
  • Animal Eyes: A ram Faunus with rectangular eyes.
  • Battle Couple: Although not seen in the actual story due to her early death, Icheku and his wife Clementine were both Huntsmen and were even on the same team when in the Academy.
  • The Beastmaster: His Semblance allows him to summon five different smoke creatures from the masks he personally carved, with each creature taking the appearance of a different animal.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Although he's extremely friendly and jovial, Icheku shows that he's willing to use violence when his daughter is threatened.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Comes to the rescue twice in the story. In Caught in the Crossfire, he and Bomvu save Eirian and Adam from Banesaw, and later in Man Down, he saves Team AZCRMN and Qrow from the mutated Grimm.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He grew up during the period before the Faunus Revolution, experiencing severe racism because of his Faunus heritage, and later lost his father and half brothers in the revolution. After marrying a human and coming back home to Menagerie, he found that his own people were just as intolerant to those outside their race, and had to live on the outskirts of Vikela with his family. When Eirian was a child, he ended up losing his wife.
  • Disappeared Dad: His own father was killed during the Faunus Rights Revolution.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Just like his daughter, Icheku sports short dreadlocks and is a Huntsman.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: He wears layered capes hanging from the left side of his belt, something that Eirian herself copies in her Beacon outfit, and only wears one silver bracelet on his left arm, while wearing two on his right.
  • Gentle Giant: He towers over everyone else at 7', but is as kind and gentle as they come.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: At 7', he considerably taller than Clementine, who was around her daughter's height.
  • Interspecies Romance: He fell in love and married his old teammate, Clementine, who was a human.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: A nice guy, and seems to favour using Bomvu, a lion, as his battle companion, having a close relationship with his summon.
  • The Leader: Because of his age and experience, he's this to Team AZRECRMN in Gaza, ordering them to take time to rest while he went to find Qrow and go rescue a capture Ruri.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Both he and Eirian are almost identical in appearance and personality.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He's a ram Faunus, so he has large, curved horns coming out of his head.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Icheku is the Igbo name for the African Velvet Tamarind, which has a black skin and orange insides. While Icheku has black hair and dark skin, he wears different shades of orange and tan.
    • Zulu is the name of an ethnic group in Southern Africa, and the name of Shaka Zulu, Icheku's allusion.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: His jovial personality goes straight out the window when he finds out that Eirian has gone after the Alpha Stitched. When he saves her later, he finally snaps during their argument, a stark contrast to how he is usually. There, he confesses that this change of behaviour is because he's already lost everyone but Eirian, and he can't bear letting his daughter run into danger and be killed.
  • Papa Wolf: He's very protective of Eirian, though is also able to see that she's a grown woman now and so can make her own choices, such as leaving Menagerie to enrol in Beacon Academy. He grows to be just as protective for the rest of team AZRE.
  • Power of Love: Literally what improved his Semblance. Icheku's training has a Huntsman go through an emotional journey of self discovery to find that piece to complete them. When asked what his was, Icheku reveals that the reason his Semblance is so powerful and versitle is because of love; heavily implied to be the love for his deceased wife.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Qrow's Blue Oni. Icheku is lively, boisterous and very physically affectionate, while Qrow is gruff, antisocial and prefers to work alone, with the only affection he shows being behind closed doors.
  • Rescue Romance: Downplayed. While Clementine saving him from a Grimm, ending up scarred from the attack, is what repaied their strained relationship, it wasn't until later that they actually started dating.
  • Stout Strength: With fatherhood leaving him somewhat overweight, Icheku is one of the strongest fighters, especially since he's naturally bigger than anyone else in the cast.
  • Technicolor Eyes: He has purple eyes.

    Clementine Ímoharach

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clementine_height.png

“I don’t like thinking about her, but… She was a Huntress that I always wanted to be, even when I was a little kid. She was strong, brave, smart… and she was never there.”

Eirian's deceased mother, Clementine was a human Huntress that was on Icheku's team when they were still in the Academy, having left her home in Mantle. After they graduated, she married him, and moved to Menagerie. However, she faced severe hatred and discrimination from the Faunus that lived there, finding it affecting even her daughter. When Eirian was only a child, Clementine died due to unknown circumstances.

  • Action Mom: She was a Huntress, and carried on working on the field even after giving birth to Eirian.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Eirian reveals that Clementine's death was this in Chapter 40, though how she died or what happened remains unknown.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She's where Eirian got her short height from, only being around 5'3, while Icheku towers over her at 7'.
  • Interspecies Romance: She fell in love with and married her old teammate, Icheku, who's a Faunus.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death has severely impacted Icheku and Eirian even years after.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Clementine is an orange fruit, highlighted in Clementine's bright orange hair and orange accents on her outfit.
    • Ímoharach is Scottish Gaelic, meaning "Ivory". Not only does Clementine has pale skin like ivory, but uses ivory in her corset.
  • Parents as People: Eirian remembers her fondly even if she rarely talks about Clementine in depth, detailing Clementine to be smart, brave, strong... and never there. From what little Clementine is talked about, she's shown to be a realistic person who struggles with the stress of motherhood and living in a kingdom that hated her, even purposely isolating her daughter to protect her from the same hate she experienced. While all her actions are understandable given her situation, Eirian does admit that even though Clementine tried and was good when she was there, she was ultimately a flawed person who made mistakes when pressured.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She had bright red eyes, though not much is known of her personality due to her early death.
  • Rescue Romance: Her saving Icheku from a Grimm in their Academy days is what repaired their relationship and allowed them to progress to a romantic one later on.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Like Eirian, Clementine had red eyes.

    Nabk

A bird statue brought to life by Eirian's Semblance in their first year, Nabk is the team pet and unofficial mascot. While it is often used for survaliance and recon, Nabk's bratty behaviour and foul temper makes working with it very tempermental.

  • Animal Eye Spy: While Eirian can't actually see through Nabk's eyes, her Semblance has evolved that she can sense Nabk's emotions. When Nabk finds Adam and Ren alive, Eirian is able to sense that and knows that her friends had survived the Grimm attack.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Torchwick shooting him resulted in Nabk losing a wing and multiple parts of his body.
  • Instant Messenger Pigeon: Adam uses him to deliver notes to Blake after being suspended from Beacon. More justified than the usual trope given Nabk's near human-like intelligence. The only drawback was that Nabk is incredibly lazy.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Torchwick had Adam dead to rights, only for Nabk to come in and distract him long enough for Adam to recover. Nabk didn't survive the attempt after Torchwick shot him with his cane and then stepped on Nabk's body with the machine.
  • It Is Dehumanising: Many people refer to Nabk as "it", while Eirian, his creator, refers to Nabk as "him". Neither seem to be used negatively towards the bird, but rather as differing but welcomed pronouns.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: Nabk is a Peregrine Falcon. While Eirian's allusion is Khnum, the Egyptian God of the Nile, Nabk is based off Horus, the falcon Egyptian God. As the god of protection, healing and the sun/skies, Nabk often is used to help protect and guide team AZRE during their missions, even coming to the rescue on his own to guide Eirian and her group to Adam and Ren after the Sphynx Grimm attacked them. His love is so strong that he went at Torchwick to protect Adam, resulting in his death.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: This to Eirian. Nabk is often by his creator's side, even when she went to Vacuo for the second Vytal Tournament. He started becoming one to Adam, growing closer to the him until his death.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: He was often the comic relief of the story along with Eirian, especially with his mischievous personality. His death marks the start of Team AZRE falling apart.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite his childish attitude, Nabk is Eirian's creation and as such is loyal to her. This has extended with her Semblance evolving, as they are able to sense the emotions of the other no matter the distance between them.

Chase & Roxanne's Family

A family made up of children brought under the wing of Eliana Kokkinos, the Headmistress of Shade and leader of Isidis City, they live in the safety of the city while pursuing the career of Huntsmen. However, forces unknown to the world threaten to split them apart.

    Aurora Marrón

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aurora_vacuo.png

“Yeah. Roxxie, Chase and Sun wanna be Huntsmen, but I don’t wanna fight people. I wanna fix them.”

The younger sister of Chase and Roxanne, and the younger adopted sister of Sun, Aurora is the youngest of the childrens living under Eliana Kokkinos' care. Only 11, she's the usual little girl; innocent, carefree and loving to everyone and everything.

  • Ambiguous Innocence: It's unclear how much Aurora actually knows about what's going on around her. While she seems like the typical preteen, some of her comments about Chase are worrying, and she seems to notice things around her that others ignore, like Adam's hidden scar.
  • The Conscience: She's one to her older siblings, with Roxanne often worrying about her and Chase's actions affecting her, as well as how accepting the Summer Maiden's powers will hurt Aurora with Roxanne having to leave once acquiring them.
  • The Cutie: Given her youth and bright personality, she can be seen as one.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She had lost her parents to Grimm and Salem, and had to be raised by her older siblings instead. With one too occupied with her duty to her kingdom and mother, and the other putting his own needs over Aurora, she only really has Sun as a friend. Given that the twins were only 12 their parents died, Aurora would've only been around four, too young to actually remember her parents properly.
  • Fairytale Motif: Aurora, the Roman Goddess of Dawn.
  • Flower Motif: Sunflowers.
  • Healing Hands: Her Semblance is revealed to be accelerated healing, allowing her to accelerate a person's injury so that it's a few days older.
  • Magical Eye: Just like Chase and Roxanne, Aurora was born with silver eyes, which allows her to summon light that damages Grimm.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Aurora is a Latin name meaning "Dawn", with Aurora both wearing light colours like white, orange and yellow, but also connects to her silver eyes, which allows Aurora to summon light from them to destroy Grimm.
    • Just like her siblings, Marrón is the Spanish word for "maroon", a reddish brown colour. On some of her outfit's accents, she wears brown.
  • Nice Girl: She's sweet and caring, wanting to become a doctor rather than a Huntress because she wants to help fix people rather than fight them, and even offers to one day heal Adam's scar.
