Team AZRE

"Shame that we weren't there. I'm sure our team could bring home the title!"

The Titular Team of story, AZRE (pronounced Azure) is composed of Adam Taurus, Zanthus Nemeós, Ruri Kashima, and Eirian Esna. Four completely different people from all walks of life, their start is as turbulent as they come, but with time and effort, Team AZRE grow closer together and learn to rely on each other for when the past rears its ugly head.

    In General
  • Color-Coded Characters: Adam is red, Zanthus is yellow, Ruri is blue and Eirian is silver.
    • Adam has bright red hair and wears red asian-influenced shirts, with Wilt's blade being red in colour. When his Semblance is used, all the red parts of his being glow bright, standing out against his blackened silhouette.
    • Zanthus' hair is yellow, and most of the armour he wears is gold and bronze in colour. His name means "golden-haired' in Greek, and his weapons share the same colour scheme while being named "Tuscan Sun", a shade of golden yellow.
    • Ruri's name has two meanings depending on the kanji used; Jasmine and Lapis Lazuli. Because of her dual colour theme, she wears both blue and green, along with having blue hair and naming her weapons Chrysocolla, an expensive gem that ranges from blue to green in colour.
    • Eirian wears a headband with silver horns, along with silver bracelets that mimic her colour alongside the amount of white she wears.
  • Family of Choice: After going through so much together, the team starts to see each other as family, especially Zanthus since he had ran away from his abusive family as a child.
  • Foil: Within the team, we have several different foils:
    • Adam is a Faunus who has been subjugated by the worst of humanity, emotionally and physically scarred by racism and grew up to feel the same hatred back towards humans as a result. Eirian is a mixed person who was discriminated and outcasted by the Faunus of Menagerie because of her human appearance, but took the isolation and trauma and pushed herself to be a Huntress so that she could bridge the gap between Faunus and Humans. On top of this, Adam has a very dark colour scheme with his red and blacks offset by his paler skin, while Eirian has a very bright colour scheme with her silver and whites offset by her darker skin.
    • Both Adam and Zanthus are Faunus raised in poverty and escaped, only to be brought into worse organisations that used them for their skills. In the end, they both leave with blood on their hands, and have broken relationships with their family. However, while Zanthus is an accepting pacifist who internalised his trauma and refuses to fight when he deems it not necessary, Adam externalised his trauma and became an aggressive fighter who openly hated all humans.
    • Ruri and Eirian are both girls who grew up in extreme isolation at the behest of their parents, wanting to protect them from the dangers of the world. Ruri is quiet, mature and very academically driven, ending up being top of her classes, while Eirian is loud, has a child-like enthusiasm, and struggles academically in some of her classes.
  • Fun with Acronyms: As is tradition in RWBY, AZRE is made up of the team members' first initials.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: They have two guys and two girls.

    Adam Taurus

Adam Taurus

“I don’t care how many lives we have to take. If it means the Faunus finally get the respect we deserve, then that’s what I’ll do.”
Click here for his appearance in Vacuo

"I wasn’t a good person, I know that. You had every right to be angry with me for what I did. Honestly, some of the anger I felt was probably because, deep down, I didn’t want to be alone again."

The leader of Team AZRE, Adam was originally a SDC worker before he escaped with other Faunus. Only ten years old, he was adopted into the Belladonna family and joined the White Fang, but cut ties to Ghira and Hajimu after they left the organization two years prior to the story. Working under the Vale Branch, he finally left the White Fang after becoming overwhelmed with guilt over a train heist gone wrong, and enrolled into Beacon Academy.

  • Achey Scars: His SDC scar still hurts him over a decade since he first got it, though the medical attention he managed to receive after being adopted helped with the pain somewhat.
  • Achilles' Heel: His Semblance allows him to redirect any energy he absorbs into his sword. If he loses it, he's effectively cut off from using his Semblance.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's an abusive and violent terrorist in RWBY, but is apologetic for his past mistakes and wishes to atone for what he's done in AZRE. Shown more in his interactions with Eirian, who's human, and Zanthus, who's a pacifist and hates the White Fang, where he learns to work together with them and becomes close friends.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In RWBY, Adam has only shown interest in Blake, so he's seen as straight. In AZRE, he starts dating Zanthus.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In RWBY, Adam is the ex boyfriend of Blake and enemy of the Belladonna family as a whole, whereas in AZRE, he's the older adopted brother of Blake and once Ghira and Hajimu's adopted son.
  • Age Lift: He's seventeen at the start of AZRE, while estimated to be around 23 in RWBY.
  • Aloof Ally: Even after letting go of some of his more negative traits, Adam still isn't the most friendly and prefers to keep to his small group of friends. Even after spending years in Beacon, his list of friends hadn't grown much and he shows very little concern over it; unlike Eirian.
  • Animal Motif: Bulls. He's a bull Faunus, having horns coming out of the sides of his head. His White Fang mask had bull horn decorations on them. As well as that, he is shown to have a brand mark from the SDC hidden under his bandage, meaning that he was literally branded like cattle.
  • Animal Stereotypes: He's shown to be quite bull headed with an inability to accept other people's viewpoints, at least until he learns valuable team working skills during his time at Beacon. On top of that, he's shown to "see red" and loses his temper fairly quickly.
  • The Atoner: What his arc essentially is. Adam wishes to atone for his murder of innocent workers on the Dust train he and Blake were robbing.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He's noticebly quieter than the rest of his team, barring Ruri, but he was made the leader of Team AZRE for a reason. Noticeably, he spent most of his life surviving difficult situations; from his childhood as a SDC slave, to the years on the road whilst in the White Fang, and then surviving numerous attacks on him while in Beacon.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Downplayed. His relationship with Blake was good until their parents left the White Fang, where it then turned abusive with Adam constantly emotionally and verbally abusing Blake. It was broken completely when he blew up the SDC train.
  • Born into Slavery: He sees himself as this, as he was born to an SDC worker and had been working under them for as long as he could remember, unable to leave.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • His admiration and trust in the Huntsman Academies, and Ozpin specifically, is damaged more over the Volume 3 arc given their less than adequete attitude in dealing with Weiss Schnee. After Blake ran away to figure out what the White Fang was doing, he completely loses trust in Ozpin's ability to help them, and is validated when he's suspended after refusing to give up on his mission to help the White Fang. The betrayal shakes him up so badly that he openly derides Zanthus for putting any trust in Ozpin or the authorities.
    • He himself is a victim of this, as even his team is struggling to deal with his growing obsession with the White Fang. Zanthus completely gives up on him when Adam's attempt to kill Torchwick gets Nabk killed.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Him and Eirian. Adam is a deeply troubled young man who's constantly haunted by the mistakes of his past, feeling embittered by his treatment at the hands of racist humans and no longer believes in the same dream as his family; that Faunus and Humans could live together in peace. Eirian is a happy go lucky girl who always looks on the bright side of any situation, even if it negatively impacts her. She constantly tries to bring Adam out of his depressed moods and gives him advice on how to deal with it all, showing great care for her close friend.
  • Brother–Sister Team: He fought often with Blake during their time in the White Fang, including the last train job. They reunite and join up to fight against Roman Torchwick and the White Fang.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: While he still calls Hajimu "Mom", he calls Ghira by his name, showing the destroyed relationship between them.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Often becomes defensive when people criticise him.
  • Catch and Return: His Semblance allows him to capture kinetic energy and dish it back out through his sword.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Only towards the White Fang. Adam's more pragmatic personality means that he perfectly understands the more grey morality of the world, but when it comes to the White Fang, he's completely blindesided and feels that he has to help them no matter what, even though he's not with them anymore.
  • The Comically Serious: His stoic and often sarcastic personality makes him this.
  • Cool Mask: He wears a white mask with red decorations during his time in the White Fang, distinguishing him from the lower members of the organisation. He doesn’t wear it during his time in Beacon so that people don't know of his connection to the White Fang.
  • Cool Sword: Adam fights with a Chakuto (Wilt), with its sheath acting as a rifle as well (Blush).
  • The Cynic: A result of his difficult upbringing, Adam struggles to see much good in the world and believes humanity to be capable of both good and bad, offsetting the more idealistic Eirian and Zanthus.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was enslaved by the SDC since he was a young child, having known no other life besides the constant beatings and racism he suffered through. When he was just ten, he watched his mother work herself to death and was branded over his eye shortly after due to rebelling against his superiors. While he managed to escape to the White Fang where he was adopted into a good family, the damage was already done.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He dresses primarily in black and red, and while he's far from a morally righteous person, he still simply wants to help his people and family, as well as find a place in the world for himself.
  • Dark Secret: He does everything he can to keep his involvement with the White Fang and the lives he’s taken a secret, knowing that his team would hate him if they found out. In Beneath The Cracks, they find out, and while Zanthus and Ruri accept his past mistakes, Eirian drifts further from him because of her conflicting emotions regarding the murder.
  • Dented Iron: The numerous injuries he's acquired over his life, and the story, had left him struggling despite still proving a capable fighter. His brand had left him blind in his left eye, the rebar through his left leg from Iya had Adam struggling to walk properly, and he clearly struggles with chronic pain all the time.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Adam had always struggled with finding his purpose, and after leaving the White Fang, finds himself lost without a family and goal in life. It's only after Phoibos suggests he goes to Beacon that he focuses on redemption through becoming a Huntsman. This gets complicated by Volume 3, as Adam's desire to find his place in the Academies directly conflicts with his percieved duty to helping the White Fang, forcing him to start deciding which path he must take.
  • Dramatic Unmask: In Paint the Town Red, he finally reveals his brand to Weiss, in a fit of rage. While he feels nothing over the revelation, Weiss reacts very badly and runs out of the apartment.
  • Emotional Powers: While his Semblance works on absorbed energy through his weapon, his sparring match with Weiss shows that, when pissed off enough, Adam's anger can work as a temporary fuel source.
  • Eyepatch of Power: The bandage he wears serves as an eye patch over his left eye, hiding away his SDC brand.
  • Eye Scream: Over his left eye is a brand reading the initials of the SDC, effectively blinding Adam in that eye.
  • Facial Horror: Without his bandage, Adam's left eye and part of his face is heavily scarred with an SDC brand, disfiguring him.
  • Fairytale Motif: While every character has an allusion to a fairytale, Adam alludes to the Beast from Beauty and the Beast.
  • Fantastic Racism: Many Faunus are bitter and angry towards their treatment by humans, but Adam continues this into full out racism towards humans. It’s only after he becomes friends with Eirian and listens to her own struggles that he begins to drop this attitude.
  • Foil: With each of Team AZRE acting as a foil to a member of Team RWBY, Adam serves as one to Blake. Both are Faunus with dark pasts involving the White Fang, believing that they are not worthy of other peoples’ affections and that harbour guilt over their past mistakes. However, Blake is a wary if good natured teenage girl who still believes that Faunus and humans can get past their differences, even if she shows hesitance on how exactly she could go about it. Adam originally had no interest in extending an olive branch to the humans, going out of his way to be overtly hostile to anyone before slowly learning to let that anger go.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: The first half of his first year in Beacon was spent on his own, since his behaviour and attitudes towards Eirian pushed most of his team away. Even Ruri, who was the only one that Adam actually respected, didn't hang around him for fun. Despite growing close with his team, Adam has very few friends outside of them.
  • Freudian Excuse: His foul behaviour and beliefs stem from his childhood trauma of working in the SDC mines in Atlas, having witnessed his mother die in front of him, and then being horrifically scarred by the SDC superiors.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Zanthus refuses to let Adam use his past as justification for hurting Eirian and others just for being human, as there were plenty of people who had suffered like he had and don't allow their pain to change them for the worse.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He was once just a child worker in the mines, only to work his way up to becoming one of the highest ranking White Fang members, being responsible for countless attacks and deaths. His story in AZRE is Adam working away from this.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: The left side of his face and eye are heavily scarred by an SDC brand, which Adam received in his childhood during his life as an SDC miner. While it's usually covered up by the bandage that Phoibos gave him, some of the scars can still be seen poking out from underneath.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: So much so that his nicknames are 'Firecracker' and 'Cherry Bomb', invoking explosive imagery.
  • Happily Adopted: Downplayed. Adam very much loved his new family, and was the best brother he could be for a young Blake, but he quickly felt abandoned and hurt when Ghira and Hajimu decided to leave the White Fang. Cutting contact with them, he ran away to the Vale Branch of the White Fang and remained there, feeling bitter and angry towards his adopted parents. Even after he enrolled in Beacon, Adam didn’t get into contact with Ghira or Hajimu at all.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his serious demeanor, Adam is shown to actually be a good artist, sketching in his notebooks along with all his lesson plans.
  • Hiding in Plain Sight: Since no one knew what he looked like while he was in the White Fang, Adam is able to go under the radar of everyone in Beacon by hiding his past and mask. However, by halfway through his first year, everyone found out due to the attack on Sasnak Docks.
  • The "I Love You" Stigma: Because of his trauma and lack of healthy relationships while growing up, Adam is left confused and completely out of his depth in regards to romantic relationships and public displays of affection.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: Fights this way like in RWBY.
  • Jerkass Realization: His treatment of Eirian is abysmal all throughout their first year at Beacon due to his past grievances with humans, and Eirian’s submissive personality allowed him to get away with it. When she finally blows up on him and refuses to take any more of his hatred for something that she didn’t do, and something that she actively suffers from, Adam finally realises that he was fighting the wrong person and, after some life changing events with Eirian, starts rebuilding bridges with her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While blunt and often confrontational, Adam does have the ability to be caring and gentle, especially with young children like Aurora.
  • The Leader: He was named leader of Team AZRE, his name taking the first letter as is Huntsman tradition.
  • Little Bit Beastly: As a Faunus, he has curved bull horns.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Despite being impaled through the right leg in his fight with Iya, Adam still keeps moving and protects Eirian from Banesaw while the rebar is still in his leg.
  • Mama's Boy: He's far more attached to the maternal figures in his life, like his mother, Hajimu and Kaanchana, compared to Ghira or Banesaw, who has a more fatherly relationship with Ilia. Somewhat Justified, as Adam never knew his father and clearly struggles to form proper relationship with paternal figures in his life.
  • Masking the Deformity: Adam's SDC scar over his left eye is constantly covered; first by his White Fang mask, and then a bandage when he attends Beacon.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Adam is a Hebrew name meaning “of the red earth”, matching his red colour scheme and violent tendencies. The Prince from Disney's version of Beauty and the Beast is also called Adam.
    • Taurus is the Latin word for “bull” and the star sign of those born in late April to late May, with Adam revealed to have been born in May. Not only would this make him a Taurus, but it further connects to his Faunus heritage; a bull.
  • My Greatest Failure: Principles reveals that, outside of bringing Blake into the White Fang, Adam deeply regrets blowing up the SDC train all the way back in the first chapter. When Eirian asks him if he ever thinks about his victims, he immediately confesses that he does every day.
  • One Head Taller: He's 6'4", while Zanthus is only 5'10".
  • Parental Abandonment: His father had vanished before he was born, and his mother died when he was ten, leaving him orphaned.
  • Parental Substitute: When Ghira and Hajimu left the White Fang, Adam took Blake and ran away to the Vale branch where Kaanchana helped hide them away. Over the next two years, he became almost a new parent for Blake despite their increasingly abusive relationship. This ended when Blake left the White Fang and Adam in disgust.
    • Adam himself saw Ghira and Hajimu as potential new parents to fill in the roles left behind by his biological mother. However, when they left, he latched onto Kaanchana in desperation, leaving him vulnerable to her manipulations as she convinced him only she really cared about him. Iya even compares his desire to “motherly validation”.
  • Recoil Boost: His sword can be fired out of his sheath at high speeds, allowing Adam to hit his target with Wilt before catching it and continuing the attack.
  • Safety in Indifference: Early in the story, he kept most people away from him, including his team, partially because he was scared of being hurt after just losing everything he knew.
  • Ship Tease: Between him and Zanthus. They get became an Official Couple in A Night To Remember.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: His reaction to Blake and Zanthus’ beliefs regarding the animosity between the Faunus and the humans. Adam believes that any sort of peace between them is impossible and assumes the worst of humans around him, willing to jump to violence in self-defense. Blake and Zanthus still believe that peace and equality can be achieved, albeit with hard work, and that violence only lets the humans justify their bigotry of their people. This clash of ideologies caused many arguments between them.
  • Tears of Remorse: He hits his limit in Caught In The Crossfire after finding out about Blake's death, wishing he never brought her to the White Fang with him.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: After starting to get close to his team, Adam lets go of some of his aggressive behaviour and is much more approachable.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: He refuses to go back to Menagerie, even after leaving the White Fang.

    Zanthus Nemeós

Zanthus Nemeós

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zanthus_height.png
"Don’t worry about it. Everyone has problems with their Semblance from time to time. Don’t beat yourself up over an accident."
Click here for his appearance in Vacuo

"That’s not what I meant. Even if you and I don’t agree on things, even if I think how you treat my friend is horrible, I’m not gonna walk by when someone needs my help."

The Z of Team AZRE, Zanthus is a lion Faunus who once lived in Mistral. Born into a poor family, he only remembered a life on the road, suffering under his father’s abusive nature and training from hell, his mother doing nothing to help him. When he was thirteen, Zanthus ran away and joined an underground fighting ring, honing his skills until he accidentally killed an opponent. He ran away again to Vale, deciding to become a Huntsman, and enrolled into Beacon Academy.

  • Absurd Cutting Power: His Semblance, Primal Instinct, gives Zanthus the ability to cut through almost anything he hits, including Aura.
  • Abusive Parents: What little he talks about his past paints his father as an abusive and neglectful father who’s personal problems plagued the whole family, beating both Zanthus and Argenta during their ‘training’. His mother was neglectful of her children and ignore the abuse inflicted on them.
  • Accidental Murder: He killed someone while fighting in Mistral's underground rings, due to unlocking his Semblance and flying into an uncontrollable rage. This is the main catalyst for his pacifism, as he internalised the trauma from the incident.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: His attitude towards his Semblance. It's so bad that he lied about not having a Semblance to his team, rather than admit what his was.
  • Animal Motifs: Lions. Like them, Zanthus is brave, protective and noble, but has a fierce side when using his Semblance. To match this, he has lion ears, a tail, and his eyes resemble lion eyes when his Semblance is activated.
  • Animal Eyes: A lion Faunus with slit pupils.
  • Artistic License – Biology: He's a lion Faunus and has slit pupils. Big cats like lions don't have slit pupils like domestic cats do, rather having round ones. Might be Justified in that he inherited his eye shape from his mother, who is a wildcat similar to the domesticated breed.
  • Badass Cape: He wears a red one in all of his outfits, save his school uniform. Moment of Rest reveals that he based it off of Qrow's, who had saved him as a child.
  • Badass Pacifist: He follows a strict ‘no killing’ rule unless he’s facing Grimm, and even then heavily detests violence if he thinks it doesn’t need to happen. Still, when he fights, he’s more than capable of defending himself. After the trauma of Vacuo, he's shed a lot of his pacifist beliefs, admitting to Blake that he once shared the views of her pacifist father but couldn't after everything he had seen.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: His relationship with Adam improves when Adam starts treating his team with respect.
  • The Berserker: His Semblance make him one when activated.
  • Big Brother Instinct: While not related, Zanthus is this towards Eirian, protecting her from dangers both in and out of Beacon. Quickly, he adopted the same behaviour towards Ruby, comforting her after another fight with Weiss. This protection starts to become unhealthy when he focuses on Ruby's health after their fight with Torchwick, rather than his boyfriend who was far more injured. Adam quickly calls him out for it.
  • Big Eater: He's very food-driven, since he grew up in severe poverty.
  • The Big Guy: While actually shorter than Adam, Zanthus is stronger and more durable than his teammate.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Qrow. He is disappointed to learn that the man who saved his life and left such an impression on the younger Zanthus was an alcoholic asshole, though he's unaware of Qrow's softer side and just why he is driven to drink.
  • Broken Tears: He finally breaks in After The Storm, confessing that he's confused on how he can feel so upset over the death of his abusive father.
  • Cape Snag: Played for Laughs. His cape is tangled up when he falls into a tree in Unlikely Partnerships, with Eirian asking why he just doesn't take it off.
  • Calling The Old Woman Out: When he and his mother, Sable, comes face to face at the end of What Lies Underneath, Zanthus doesn't hesitate to call her out for all the pain and suffering she allowed to happen to him and Argenta. Still, in the end, he clearly still loves her and is saddened when she leaves him forever.
  • Close-Range Combatant: His weapons and fighting style means that he has to get up close to his opponents to fight them, only using the guns on Tuscan Sun when he can’t reach his enemies.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: While he doesn’t talk much about it, he was severely abused physically and emotionally as a child, often having to steal just to feed himself and his younger sister, and was often put through Training from Hell by his father. When he ran away, he joined an underground fighting ring out of desperation, and while he was treated better than at home, he was still derided for being a Faunus and witnessed severe racism and brutality against his people. A few years later, he killed someone in blind rage and burdens the guilt over it to the present.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Because of how powerful his Semblance is, Zanthus is an extremely dangerous opponent. However, he can’t use it freely and trying to activate it requires him to mentally traumatise himself, meaning that he very rarely uses it out of his free will.
  • Eye Colour Change: Normally, his eyes have white sclera with slit pupils, but the colours invert to black sclera and white pupils when his Semblance is activated.
  • Fairytale Motif: The Nemean Lion from The 12 Labours of Hercules.
  • Foil: As every member of Team AZRE is a foil to one from Team RWBY, Zanthus acts as a foil to Yang Xiao Long. Both are blonde haired older siblings that specialise in close combat, as well as suffering from PTSD and abandonment issues. However, while Yang is a boisterous combat enthusiast who only wanted to become a Huntress at first for the adventure and unpredictable life style, Zanthus is a calm, pacifist who dreams for a life of stability after living through one full of turmoil, becoming a Huntsman to atone for taking a life during a moment of high stress.
  • Gladiator Games: The underground fighting rings Zanthus fought in worked like this.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Living outside the safety of the main cities, Zanthus had to learn not only to fight to protect himself, but how to steal and cheat without getting caught so that his family had money and food to survive on.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has a head full of golden, fluffy hair, similar to a lion’s mane, and is a kind-hearted young man who refuses to not help someone regardless of what he thinks of them.
  • Human Hammer-Throw: His fighting style means he uses brute strength to grapple and throw his enemies around, often favouring throwing them around and flinging them away to deal extra damage.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: His Semblance is unusable without severe mental trauma and Zanthus becoming an uncontrollable beast, which brings him no small amount of lament.
  • In the Hood: His Vacuo outfit has him in a red headscarf, similar to his mother's.
  • The Juggernaut: Zanthus is thicker built with more visible muscle, and can tank much more damage than the rest of his team due to this and his high amount of Aura.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Zanthus is nothing like his father, Xanthe. While his father was unapologetically abusive and believed deeply in the survival of the fittest mentality, Zanthus always tries to help people around him and won’t give up on people even if they’re perceived weak, holding deep pacifist philosophies that contradicts Xanthe’s violent behavior.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Has some lion features, such as ears, eyes and a tail.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Zanthus is the Latin version of the Greek name Xanthe, which is his father’s name, and means “Golden-haired”, which connects to the colour of Zanthus’ hair and his golden motif. His name can also mean “Guardian”, playing into his job as a Huntsman who serves as a guardian for the people, and his protective nature.
    • Nemeós is the Greek word for Nemean, the place of origin for the Nemean Lion that Zanthus is based off.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He’s fairly attractive and is fond of wearing outfits that show off much of his body, often forgoing shirts altogether if training or relaxing.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: The most muscular of Team AZRE, Zanthus is the most physically strongest, able to deal out severe damage and tank blows.
  • My Greatest Failure: Sees the murder of his opponent in his time at the underground fighting rings to be this. All throughout the story, he holds constant guilt over the act and doesn’t like talking about it, even more so than his childhood. The whole incident was the main catalyst for his radical change in beliefs and behaviour.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his unmovable ideals and stubbornness, Zanthus overall just wants people to live together without using violence to end disagreements and is always there for his friends when they need him.
  • Parental Abandonment: After suffering under them for years, Zanthus ran away from home at thirteen and never returned. His father died in the years after and his mother willingly stayed away, abandoning Zanthus again when they reunite in Volume 2.
  • Parental Substitute: Because of his father and mother not bothering to raise them, Zanthus picked up the slack and raised Argenta himself until he ran away, making sure she was taken care of.
  • Plagued by Nightmares: His PTSD leaves Zanthus dealing with nightmares that details his abuse from childhood and his time in the underground fighting. So much so that it leaves him The Insomniac.
  • Retractable Weapon: The claws in his Tuscan Sun can retract back into his vambraces, just like cat claws.
  • Ship Tease: With Adam. The two get together in A Night To Remember.
  • Silly Rabbit, Cynicism Is for Losers!: Both him and Eirian against Adam’s more cynical attitude.
  • Street Urchin: Was one throughout his childhood due to parental neglect and lack of money, meaning that he had to go out and steal just to put food on the table.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: When his Semblance is activated, he turns into a bloodthirsty beast that attacks without discrimination. The way to tell when he’s using this power is his eyes invert colours, the white of his sclera turn black and his black pupils turn white.
  • Super-Toughness: His high levels of Aura mean that he can tank damage that would normally shatter lower levels of Aura.
  • Sympathetic Murder Backstory: His murder of an unknown opponent a year before he came to Beacon. Zanthus shows great guilt over it, and it’s not entirely his fault given that he can’t control himself when his Semblance is activated, something that happened because his opponent was choking him to death and Zanthus was trying to protect himself.
  • Trademark Clothing: Regardless of what outfit he’s wearing, besides his uniform, Zanthus is always seen with his cape on him.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: How his Semblance manifested. While the way a Semblance can manifest is different for each person, Zanthus’ came to be when he was fighting with an unknown person and was being bested, the opponent starting to choke him out before Zanthus’ Semblance was unlocked. However, the traumatic way it happened left his power changed, and Zanthus’ consequently lost control and killed the fighter.
  • Wolverine Claws: He sports a pair of vambraces called Tuscan Sun, the weapons having spring-loaded claws by his wrists and machine guns on the top.

    Ruri Kashima

Ruri Kashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruri_height.png
"I was born deaf and worked so hard to get here despite it. Would accepting this aid make all my hard work null?"
Click here for her appearance in Vacuo

"I’m not perfect. I need to be perfect so they can let me be a Huntress."

The R of Team AZRE, Ruri Kashima is a high class Faunus who lived in the famous lake city of Tsubaki in Northern Anima. Born deaf, she was treated like a fragile doll by her parents for as long as she could remember, having everything done for her in fear that she would be hurt. Because of the coddling, she grew up rebellious and determined to prove that she was just as capable as her older sister, Seigyoku, the only one of the family who followed their aunt’s path of becoming a Huntress. Much to her parents’ worry, Ruri followed after her sister and aunt and decided to become a Huntress also, enrolling into Beacon Academy.

  • Affectionate Nickname: “Gemstone” by her father, and “Princess” by Chase.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Averted. Ruri’s ambition is treated as a positive influence due to her not throwing other people under the bus to achieve her goals, and her ambition is one of the driving forces behind her becoming a Huntress. What’s shown of her past explains her virtue as something she gained because she was tired of being treated like a fragile ornament by her parents instead of an actual person.
  • And Then What?: When she finds out that Adam was suspended from Beacon for refusing to give up on the White Fang, she asks him if he plans to keep fighting forever and suggests that he finally retires from them. When Adam refuses again, she grows frustrated and asks him what he'll do when he can't fight anymore. Adam can't give her a satisfying answer.
  • Animal Motif: Catfish. She has obvious scales on her cheeks and over her body, usually hidden by her clothing, and the strands of hair framing her face resemble the whiskers on a catfish’s face. Early in the story has Ruri learning how to interact among people after spending most of her life isolated, making her feel like a fish out of water.
  • Applied Phlebotinum: She uses dust that’s inserted into her tantos for multiple effects. Because of her rich background, she can afford the dust needed for her weapon.
  • Badass in Distress: She's kidnapped by the Alpha Stitched Grimm in Man Down. Eventually, though she tried to escape once herself, and also freed herself from her bonds again in the test lab, she's ultimately saved by Eirian's timely intervention.
  • Beneath the Mask: As part of her upbringing, Ruri holds herself in a dignified and calm manner at all times, and seems to prefer diplomacy in confrontations rather than violence. However, underneath that facade is a scared and unsure young woman who is afraid of the world around her, never having experience outside her home before she came to Beacon. When she grows closer to her team, she’s more honest when she is unsure of what to do, knowing that she doesn’t have to pretend to understand everything when she’s around them as they won’t try and treat her like a child.
  • Big Sister Worship: Ruri very much loves her older sister, Seigyoku, and wants to become a Huntress to follow in her footsteps. This idiolisation takes a severe hit after Seigyoku returns from the Jade Palace, as the long time apart, on top of Ruri having to go through the trauma of losing her Semblance without knowing why her sister wouldn't contact her, has soured their relationship. It only improves slightly, and even then Seigyoku's changed mentality towards her duty gets between the two.
  • Bookworm: She enjoys reading and is often seen with a book in hand during her free time.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: She finally stands up to her parents in Heart & Soul when they try and take her out of Beacon and return her home following the loss of her Semblance.
  • Chain Pain: Her tantos are connected to chains that are reeled inside of them, allowing Ruri to turn them into kusarigamas when she has to fight from long distance.
  • Character Development: In the beginning, Ruri was repressed and very much a perfectionist, unable to find the emotional strength to stand up to her parents and decide what she wanted. By the time the Vacuo arc had concluded, Ruri had grown to finally be able to voice her opinions and stand up to her parents, decide what she wanted for herself, and no longer holds herself up to an impossible standard with her mirroring Eirian's own words back to her in Check Up.
Ruri: "I don't need to be perfect."
  • Culture Blind: Due to her isolated childhood, Ruri is very much out of her depths when in different kingdoms.
Ruri when Adam was stolen by Chase: "Is this some kind of Vacuan greeting?"
  • Dark Secret: She treats the loss of her Semblance to Seigyoku. Others know, including the Academy faculty, but she can't admit it to her sister. Only in Deception does she finally admit the loss to Seigyoku.
  • De-power: In What Lies Underneath, Ruri is shoved into an extraction pod that Merlot had to take her soul, along with her Aura and Semblance. While Ruri held onto her Aura long enough for Eirian to free her, she had felt part of her soul be ripped from her. After The Storm confirms that she had lost her Semblance.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She despises jelly.
  • Dual Wielding: She wields two tantos, holding one in each hand. That can turn into kusarigama when thrown.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Her eyes after losing her Semblance are described as this. She no longer has any eye shines due to the trauma she suffered to her soul.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsey: Averted. While Ruri is a lady of high class, she is also from Mistral which has a heavy Asian culture. Because of this, she bows when greeting people rather than curtseying.
  • Facial Dialogue: As she cannot speak, Ruri’s facial expressions are often the only clue to what she’s thinking.
  • Fairytale Motif: Namazu from Japanese legends.
  • Family Theme Naming: All her family have Japanese names of gemstones. Ruri's means Lapis Lazuli or Jasmine.
  • Foil: As every member of Team AZRE acts as a foil to one member of Team RWBY, Ruri is one to Weiss Schnee. Both are members of the aristocracy of their respective countries, enjoying a life of luxury, but decided to become a Huntress to make a better name for their family and themselves. However, while Wiess first started off as a rich brat with a poor and selfish attitude, Ruri came to Beacon as a quiet and contemplative young woman, desperate to hide her fear under a facade of maturity and ability to help others. As well as that, Weiss’ partnership with Ruby started off badly with the girls constantly arguing with each other, while Ruri’s partnership with Eirian started on a positive, if a bit awkward, note.
  • Foreshadowing: The Volume 2 poster shows Ruri back to back with Roxanne, with Ruri looking solemnly at her hand that's emitting blue light. It's foreshadowing not only Ruri's feelings of inferiority to Roxanne, but the loss of her Semblance.
  • Friendless Background: Her parents were so afraid of Ruri getting hurt that they kept her confined to the grounds of their home, meaning that Ruri was never allowed to go out and make friends. Due to this lack of socialisation, she grew up awkward and unsure of how to properly connect with other people.
  • Girly Bruiser: She’s a trained Huntress and very deadly in battle, proving one of the top fighters of her year, and she is often dressed in feminine clothing with traditionally feminine hobbies.
  • Handicapped Badass: Her deafness is a big part of Ruri’s character and the cause of many of her problems, but she pushed past all of these to be a strong fighter and formidable Huntress like the rest of her team.
  • Heavy Sleeper: She’s not woken up by anything, mostly because she can’t hear any commotion that’s going on around her.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Eirian. Despite the two explicitly showing attraction to women, they never show any attraction to each other, yet both care about each other deeply and are shown to spend a lot of time with each other.
  • Kick Chick: Her fighting style incorporates numerous kicks in it, with Ruri showing to prefer using her legs while fighting than her arms.
  • Lady of War: Ruri is always shown to wear exquisite clothing and jewels, has the calm and quiet personality of a noblewoman from Mistral, and is always fighting on the front lines in her job as a Huntress.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She has fish scales all over her body, with the ones on her cheeks always clear to see by everyone. Her more hidden features are the fins that replace her ears and the gills on her neck.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Both she and Eirian had no idea about Adam's search for Blake until he came clean, nor did she know about his connection to the White Fang or his brand until after the attack on Sasnak Docks.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Her life was luxurious, but she had to deal with isolation because her parents were too scared of letting their disabled daughter out of their sight, much to Ruri’s detriment.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Ruri is a female Japanese name meaning “lapis lazuli” or “jasmine”, depending on the kanji used. This name not only matches her blue and green colour scheme, but is also valuable gems that tie into her noble status and her mother’s family business, where they sold gemstones that are collected from the family owned mines.
    • Kashima is the name of the Japanese God who watched over Namazu to make sure it doesn’t harm mankind with its earthquakes. As it’s her father’s family name, it ties to Ruri constantly being watched over by her father to make sure no harm comes to her.
  • Ninja: Her Asian inspired character and fluid fighting style paints Ruri very much like this., yet her honor-based code and rich background paints her more like a Samurai.
  • Noiseless Walker: A habit from her training with Seigyoku. Ruri had learned to cross terrain without making a sound, with Adam noting as much during their training session in Shared Pasts.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Just like her sister and aunt, Ruri rejected a comfortable life in her home village Tsubaki to join the Academy.
  • The Perfectionist: A major flaw that Ruri has, which came about due to her fear that if she isn’t perfect, then she would be unable to convince her parents to allow her to become a Huntress. Even after being accepted into Beacon and living away from them, Ruri continues to uphold an impossibly high standard on herself to ensure she will never be kicked out and sent back home.
  • Power Incontinence: Her Semblance can sometimes become uncontrollable when Ruri is in moments of intense emotions. While they are not as powerful as what she can normally unleash, an outburst from Ruri being startled awake by Eirian caused a huge stress fracture in their dorm wall.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: She wears her long hair up in a bun when she’s sleeping, and in her Vacuo outfit.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Eirian’s Red Oni. While Eirian is typically energetic and extroverted, Ruri is more introverted and very much keeps to herself, providing the necessary influence to calm her partner down.
  • The Resenter: She hates Blake partially because she's jealous of Blake's frienships, skills and Semblance, as Blake training under Seigyoku has Ruri feeling that she's being replaced.
  • Replacement Goldfish: What she fears Blake has become to Seigyoku.
  • Reverse Grip: How she holds her tantos.
  • Rock Theme Naming: Her name means 'lapis lazuli', and Ruri's colour motif is blue, matching the colour of the gem.
  • She-Fu: Her fighting style incorporates numerous Martial Arts influences, namely Jujitsu and Judo with her reliance on turning an enemy’s strength against them. Her fighting style when using her swords shifts to closely resemble kenjutsu. Justified given that Ruri is very heavily inspired by Japanese culture.
  • Ship Tease: Her attraction to Roxanne is really played up in the Vacuo arc.
  • The Stoic: Mostly in the earlier chapters while Ruri was still growing used to having the freedom she was granted by attending Beacon, and was afraid that showing she was scared would just prove her parents right. After spending time with her team and other people, Ruri shows much more emotion, and is perfectly happy to admit what she’s feeling if someone close to her asked.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Her eyes are bright purple, and later start changing to grey because of the loss of her Semblance.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: While fighting, she has a habit of throwing her tantos at the enemy. Given that they’re connected to chains and need to be thrown to activate the kusarigama mode, it’s justified in her doing so.
  • True Blue Femininity: The most feminine of the team and is connected to the colour blue, with some green in the highlights of her outfits.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her eyes are drawn to be narrower than Eirian and most of the other girls in the cast, barring Blake.
  • The Voiceless: She doesn’t speak at all, instead relying on sign language when around friends and a text to voice reader on her scroll when she’s talking to acquaintances, such as her teachers.

Eirian Esna

I mean, this is where the kingdoms merge! So many cultures mixing together, how can you not get excited being here?
Click here for her appearance in Vacuo

"But no one talks about how the Faunus of Menagerie treated me and my mother."

The E of Team AZRE, Eirian Esna is the only human of the team who came from the isolated continent of Menagerie. With a human mother and a Faunus father, she was raised in Menagerie from birth and experienced severe racism from the inhabitants there due to her mother and her human appearance, finding little friendship there. The isolation left her yearning for any friendly interaction, and so she decided to become a hero like the one in her stories, hoping that becoming a Huntress would make the people love her.

  • Affectionate Nickname: She’s called "Sweetpea" by her father, and "Sunshine" by Chase.
  • Alliterative Name: Eirian Esna.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Due to her human appearance and having a human mother, Eirian was treated poorly by the Faunus that lived in Menagerie and often found herself excluded from play, either by the other kids or even their parents. This isolation had left her growing up desperate for any sort of companionship and left Eirian vulnerable to abusive relationships, shown by her willingness to shoulder Adam’s abusive behaviour in Volume 1 before she finally snapped.
  • Animal Motif: The ram, connected to Eirian’s father and family on his side. Eirian’s most defined virtue is her perseverance, even in the face of unbeatable forces, and grows throughout the story into a girl who can finally stand up for herself. In Chinese culture, the ram also symbolises sensitivity, shown in Eirian’s compassionate nature and natural ability to empathise with other people.
  • Apologizes a Lot: A habit of hers and treated seriously, as Eirian’s self-confidence was so low that she often blamed things going wrong on herself, even when it had nothing to do with her.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: In Circles, after Yang breaks down some of Weiss' walls and pushes her to tears, Eirian takes the moment to get through to Weiss just how her behaviour must've made Blake feel.
Eirian: "You’re crying because of what you’ve done. Now think of how Blake felt because of who she is."
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: She's confirmed to have ADHD by the author, though her symptoms go further past the surface level due to the author also being diagonsed with the disorder.
  • Badass in Distress: After failing to save Ruri, Eirian falls into the gorge she was chasing the Grimm through and is left unconscious, Auraless, and in the middle of uncharted Grimm territory.
    • Quickly becomes Badass Out Of Distress in Needs of the Few, as she ends up saving Chase and Adam from the Stitched in the same gorge she fell in.
  • The Bard: Loves singing, as well as apparently being able to play the guitar.
  • The Beastmaster: Eirian’s Semblance allows her to create “living” statues that have the ability to behave independently to her, to an extent.
  • Berserker Tears: She has them in the Volume 2 poster, hinting towards her rage and hurt when Ruri is kidnapped and later loses her Semblance.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She is very intelligent and earns high grades in certain classe, but Eirian struggles with getting work done outside of class and very much avoids work from classes she hates, like Law.
  • Broken Pedestal: After they started repairing their friendship, Eirian always had respect for Adam and sided with him no matter what, but she reaches her limit when it's revealed that he blew up the SDC train and killed innocent people. While she doesn't hate him, and still sees him as her friend and leader, Eirian struggles to picture the Adam who blew up the train and the Adam she knows now as the same person. Even after talking to Adam about her issues, Eirian starts moving further away from the team in favour of her new friends.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Gentle Girl to Adam's Brooding Boy.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has one of the biggest busts in the cast, which is a point of jealousy from Ruri.
  • Character Development: The search for Blake in Volume 3 highlights just how much the past two years had on Eirian. While the search back in Volume 1 had Eirian running after Adam, not thinking through her actions and excusing them with her desire to protect her friend, Eirian now shows a surprising amount of restraint and maturity. When it becomes apparent that Blake has vanished to look into something big, she immediately decides to send both Ren and a bird back to alert as many of their allies as they can, trying to stop Yang from repeating her past mistakes.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: All of Eirian’s life, she was discriminated against in her home of Menagerie due to her human heritage, being isolated from the other children and left all on her own. Her mother spent more time away from Menagerie with the stress of dealing with the discrimination started to get to her, before dying when Eirian was a child, leaving her and her father alone. At sixteen, she was severely injured when rescuing children that had wandered into the desert, resulting in her scars.
  • Death from Above: One of her signature moves. Standing on bird statues allows her to zip around in the skies while shooting down at her enemies.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: A symptom of her isolation and bullying at the hands of the children in Menagerie, as Eirian tries constantly to get on people’s good sides in hopes that they won’t kick her out or push her away again.
  • Determinator: One of her defining traits. No matter what she faces in her journey, Eirian never gives up on her goals and carries on regardless, even inspiring others around her to do the same.
Eirian: I'm not letting you hurt him.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Sports a head full of long dreads, which is kept out of her face by her headband.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: The scars on her abdomen happened after she was caught off guard by Grimm while protecting children that had wandered into the desert surrounding Menagerie. She was left with three deep gashes that were later treated and healed into scars.
  • Extreme Doormat: After all the problems she’s went through, Eirian in the earlier volumes was left with nonexistent confidence and an inability to stand up for herself, something that leaves her vulnerable to the much more aggressive Adam and bullies. However, she grew out of it.
  • Facial Markings: The Egyptian-style markings on the corner of her eyes. It's later revealed to be a genetic trait from the Esna tribe in Vacuo, the same tribe her grandmother came from.
  • Fairytale Motif: Khnum from Ancient Egyptian Mythology.
  • Family Theme Naming: With the exception of Eirian herself, her parents are named after fruit.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: In her Beacon outfit, she wears a glove on her right hand to protect it while handling her hunting rifle, as the blade flips backwards to allow the front part slip through, and has a cape on the left side of her belt. In her Vacuo outfit, she still wears the glove on her right hand, but her cape is on both sides.
  • Foil: With each member of Team AZRE acting as a foil to a member of Team RWBY, Eirian acts as one to Ruby Rose. Both are idealistic girls who dream of becoming a Huntress just like their deceased mothers, wanting to protect people and be the hero like in their childhood stories. Just like Ruby, Eirian also has difficulty acknowledging her negative emotions and prefers to keep it under the surface, though there are moments where they crack. However, while Ruby is entirely selfless in her reason to become a Huntress, as she wants to make the world better, Eirian admits that her reasoning is more selfish as she only became a Huntress because she thought it was the perfect way to get people to finally acknowledge her rather than demonise and dismiss her.
  • Friendless Background: Growing up in a Faunus-only country while looking like a human meant that Eirian was discriminated against, the children either actively bullying her or being told by their parents to avoid her. This left her yearning for any kind of attention and friendship, even if it’s toxic and abusive.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She may be goofy and all-loving, but Eirian also takes her job seriously. She's already proven to be willing to shoot to kill when she didn't hesitate to shoot at Doctor Merlot in What Lies Underneath, only missing because she was injured and running on fumes as it was.
  • Guilt Complex: She grew this because of all the trauma and discrimination she's faced throughout her life. She finally blows up in Haste, confessing that she blamed herself for Ruri's kidnapping, her injuries and even her mother's death.
  • The Gunslinger: Eirian prefers to use the hunting rifle mechanism of her weapon than the sword, providing long range back up for her close combat teammates.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Eirian tells her teams numerous stories of the times she’s gone into the desert to train with her father, with her last trip to the desert to rescue lost children leaving her heavily scarred from an attack. Because of this danger, she had to learn to fight early to survive.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Faced this because of her human mother and Faunus father. In Menagerie, she was hated because of her human appearance and Clementine, but outside her home country, she faced discrimination because of her Faunus father and birth place, especially in Mistral and Atlas. Even in Beacon, she is bullied for her Faunus father after Icheku visits. Gustave and Mauve invoke the slur "Half Breed" when talking to her.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Half Faunus, half human.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: She wears her hair in dreadlocks, similar to Icheku’s hairstyle, albeit longer.
  • Hot for Teacher: Though she doesn't actually do anything, Eirian explicitly finds Professor Melina to be very attractive.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Has this relationship with Zanthus, the two acting as close as related siblings.
  • Like Father, Like Daughter: She’s very similar to her father in looks and personality, which becomes apparent when Icheku comes to Beacon to visit his daughter and her team. Both are energetic, bright and generous people who puts everything down to help a friend in need.
  • Literal-Minded: She has difficulty in figuring out phrases and instead takes them literally, ending in some confusion among the group.
Theo: No lollygaggin’, no horsin’ around, and no running off.
Eirian: I thought we weren't going horse riding today.
  • Mad Bomber: With dust worked into her clay, Eirian can turn her statues into living bombs, letting them dive bomb an enemy while she attacks from a distance.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Averted. While it seems that she’s becoming this to Adam, Eirian actually has goals and hopes for herself, having become a Huntress for reasons that have nothing to do with him. As well as that, she tries to help because she cares and does so for all her team, along with other people, not just Adam.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Eirian is Welsh for “silver”, which is what she wears a lot of with her silver bracelets and silver coloured horns on her headband.
    • Esna is a popular place where the temple of Khnum rests, which is Eirian’s primary allusion in the show.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother, Clementine, died when she was a child.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: She wields a Khopesh type sword that can turn into a hunting rifle, allowing her to fight from a distance.
  • Motor Mouth: She often becomes this when excited about a topic or nervous.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Like Zanthus, Eirian wears more revealing outfits that highlights her legs and abdoman.
  • Named Weapons: Although naming a Huntsman's weapon is considered unusual, Eirian's weapon is revealed outside of the story to be Heka Neith.
  • Not Quite Flight: She's capable of flying by standing on the bird statues she reanimates with her Semblance, giving Eirian a more unique advantage in battle.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: She's the shortest of her team at 5'2", but is strong enough to carry both Zanthus and Ruri while running to class.
  • Precious Photo: She keeps a photo of her younger self with her parents in her dorm room.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. Eirian’s eyes are crimson red similar to her mother’s, but she’s one of the nicest members of the entire cast.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Ruri’s Blue Oni. Eirian is energetic, bubbly and outgoing, whereas Ruri is calm, collected and serious a majority of the time. It goes further with Eirian having red eyes while Ruri wears mostly blue in her outfit.
  • Sad Clown: Despite her seemingly happy go lucky attitude and bright personality, Eirian actually holds a lot of guilt and grief that she never properly came to terms with, rather burying it deep down and hiding it with a smile.
  • Shipper on Deck: She’s an avid supporter of Zanthus and Adam getting together, as well as Ruri and Roxanne.
  • Ship Tease: She starts getting this with Yang.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Downplayed, since it's meant to be shown as unwarrented, but Eirian's human ancestry earns her more than a bit of ire from the Faunus around her. So much so that her life in Menagerie was made intolerable because they refused to accept anyone with human family, even though her father is a Faunus who grew up there.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Not the usual socially awkward, but Eirian does have a habit of overextending her boundaries and doesn’t have the social experience to socialise without some mess ups. As she gets more practice with making friends, these traits are less apparent.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Haste reveals that she suffers this, as Clementine actually died protecting her.
  • Technicolor Eyes: She has natural red eyes.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Papayas.
  • Undying Loyalty: To her team, so much so that she won't flee with her life if they're still in danger.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: On the receiving end by Zanthus, who tries to get Eirian to see that she deserves to be treated fairly after an argument with Adam.
