Team RWBY

“You’ll definitely turn some heads here.”

One of the newest teams to arrive at Beacon Academy, Team RWBY (pronounce Ruby) is composed of Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiaolong.

    In General
  • Color-Coded Characters: Ruby is red, Weiss is white, Blake is black, and Yang is yellow.
    • Ruby has red tinted hair and wears her signature red cape, being named after the red gem, and has decorated her weapon; Crescent Rose, in black and red.
    • Weiss has white hair, dresses predominately in white and blue, with both Weiss meaning "white" and Schnee meaning "snow".
    • Blake has black hair, dresses herself in predominately black clothing, and her name means "black".
    • Yang has bright yellow hair, has gold accents on her jacket, and wears a pale yellow long jacket. Her name, Yang, translates to "sunny/sun".
  • Deuteragonist: Takes over this role from Team CRMN as they remained in Vacuo.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Like every other Huntsman team, RWBY is an anagram of the four girls' names, and is pronounced ruby; a shade of red and the leader's name.

“I just wanna come to Beacon like everyone else. What if they think I got here just because of some special treatment?”

“I’m Ruby. Ruby Rose.”

The leader of Team RWBY and the youngest student to attend Beacon Academy at just fifteen, Ruby Rose is a shy but intelligent girl with a love of everything mechanical, always talking about weaponry to anyone close enough to listen.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her skin is darker, her hair is coloured with more of a red tint, and Ruby's silver eyes are actually silver rather than the grey in RWBY.
  • Alliterative Name: Ruby Rose.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She was put into Beacon two years early, making her fifteen while the rest of her peers are seventeen, and team AZRE are twenty/nineteen.
  • Badass Adorable: Quirky, adorably shy, and very humble, Ruby does act her own age at times, with Weiss even pointing out that she looks too young to be at a prestigious Academy like Beacon. Ruby also went toe to toe with Roman Torchwick, the infamous criminal that gave seasoned fighters like Banesaw and Iya pause, and lived to tell the tale.
  • Badass Cape: Her signature red cape is the first thing anyone notices on her, with Ruby being an exceptionally skilled student and fighter.
  • Blow You Away: She can used her Semblance to create small wind tornados that're strong enough to blow people away.
  • Broken Pedestal: Her friendship with Blake takes a massive toll after Ruby chooses to go after Weiss, who had run off, instead of comfort Blake in Black & White, completely destroying Blake's trust in her. After Ruby protects Blake from Iya and apologises, Blake forgives her and the two resume as close friends.
  • Companion Cube: Huntsmen all have unique weapons that they are expected to maintain and train with, but Ruby takes it a step further with her love for her weapon; Crescent Rose. She even named her weapon, something that Zanthus finds strange and no other Huntsman admits to doing.
  • Custom Uniform: She wears her cape over her Beacon uniform.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Ruby's colour scheme is mostly black and harsh reds, similar to Adam's, but she is a sweet, kindhearted young girl who wants to help protect the public and her friends.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She hates the smell of fish.
  • Elemental Eye Colours: She's the fourth person in the story to have silver eyes, having got them from her mother Summer Rose. Silver eyes are capable of summoning bright light that burns any Grimm that's too close.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: While she is always trying to be respectful and caring to people, despite her unintentional Brutal Honesty, Ruby has enough of Weiss' horrible jabs at her and confesses to Zanthus in tears that she hates her. Thankfully, they seem to start moving past that when Weiss agrees to tutor Ruby in the next chapter.
  • Fairytale Motif: She's Little Red Riding Hood.
  • Fangirl: Like Weiss, she's one for Pyrrha Nikos. She immediately recognises her and freaks out to Yang, having merch of Pyrrha, and likes watching Pyrrha train. Though, unlike Weiss' more entitled attitudes towards Pyrrha, Ruby is far more respectable of her space.
  • Flower Motifs: Heavily associated with roses.
  • Foil: Like the rest of her team to AZRE, Ruby is a foil to Eirian. Both are quirky, socially awkward but cheery girls who don't let their emotions show through easily. However, Ruby is more of the shy type who is incredibly humble in fighting but a genius in school, while Eirian is too sociable with flunking grades in some of her classes and tends to show more self-confidence in herself after her Character Development.
  • Friendly Sniper: Crescent Rose is a scythe that doubles as a sniper rifle, and Ruby herself is approachable, if a bit awkward when first meeting new people.
  • Glowing Eyes: Her silver eyes glow when about to be used, and also glow in the dark similar to Faunus night vision.
  • Grade Skipper: Students attend Beacon Academy at seventeen, but Ruby was permitted to join at just fifteen, which causes no small amount of stress for her.
  • Hand Behind Head: Just like Sun, Ruby seems to do this when embarrassed or bashful.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Although she's friendlier than the usual trope, Ruby often wears her headphones when out and about with Yang. When she, Sun and Yang join Team AZRE to hang out at a tea shop, she wears her headphones for most of it until Yang takes them off her. From what Yang implies, Ruby wears them to help deal with auditory overstimulation, which is further implied when she wears them in the comic shop with Zanthus.
  • I Call It "Vera": She's the only person to actually name her weapon, calling it Crescent Rose. A practice that other students find strange.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Ruby does not like extra attention, especially regarding how she got into Beacon so young. When Yang, Sun and Eirian all compliment her about the encounter with Roman Torchwick, Ruby points out that she just wants to attend Beacon and doesn't like everyone treating her like she's special.
  • In the Hood: Her cape has a hood that she can pull up, though Ruby typically has it down.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: Silver eyes in Remnant is considered an extremely rare eye colour, with it being stated that most people go their entire lives without seeing one. Ruby possesses the rare trait, and along with the Marrón trio and Steven, are the only ones shown to possess it.
  • The Leader: She's named leader of Team RWBY, much to her surprise.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: A flaw of hers. Ruby rarely thinks things through and tends to rush headfirst into situations, which can makes things worse and force her companions to come rescue her. Her attacking the deathstalker straight on didn't work due to its thick armour, which left Ruby vulnerable and need Weiss to rescue her. Even afterwards, Ruby doesn't want to run away and believes they can take it, showing an inability to retreat and try other tactics beyond hitting her opponent.
  • Magical Eye: Just like Roxanne and Chase, Zanthus recognises that Ruby has silver eyes just like them. So, she can summon bright light to vaporise Grimm, though it's unknown just how skilled she is with them yet.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Ruby is a red gem along with being a shade of red. Ruby not only wears red accents on her black clothing, but the most striking thing about her is her red cape.
    • Rose is a type of flower. Ruby's emblem is a rose similar to her mother's, she leaves behind rose petals when using her Semblance, and the red rose in particular symbolises love, hinting to Ruby's all-loving persona.
  • Missing Mom: Like Yang, Ruby lost her mother, Summer Rose, when she was a child, and still misses her years later. Her talk with Zanthus in Help from Unexpected Places goes deeper into this: she misses what Summer could've been, as she didn't know her, rather than missing Summer as her mother like Yang does.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After finding Blake's journal and learning how deeply she hurt her friend, Ruby is devastated and admits that she didn't realise just how much she hurt Blake by going to comfort Weiss. Adam and Zanthus help her focus on finding Blake, but she uses the guilt to push through and find Blake.
  • Named Weapons: The source of the weapon names in AZRE. Ruby's habit of naming the weapons of her fellow Huntsmen is seen as strange, but she doesn't care and affectionately named her own scyth "Crescent Rose".
  • No Social Skills: Ruby is a very socially-awkward girl who is uncomfortable interacting with new people, needing to be coached by Yang just to introduce herself to Eirian, Zanthus and Sun. When they talk about things she's interested, however, Ruby opens up more and even shows some confidence in displaying her skills to them.
  • Otaku: The Gun Nut variety. Ruby loves weapons and constructing them, obsessing over them with numerous notebooks filled with ideas and schematics of weapons belonging to students and famous Huntsmen alike. This is why Ruri accepted Ruby's help with her own weapon modifications, as she trusts Ruby's knowledge more than her own.
  • Petal Power: When using her Semblance, Ruby leaves behind rose petals in her wake.
  • The Quiet One: Would very much let Yang do the talking if her sister would let her, Ruby doesn't go out of her way to talk to people.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Zanthus wonders if he's subconciously replacing his missing sister with Ruby, almost acting like a big brother to her like he was with Argenta. Part of the reason he's worried about her silver eyes is also fed by this; as Zanthus lost his sister, and doesn't know where she is or if she still lives, he's fixated on protecting Ruby to make up for his failure.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: Crescent Rose dwarfs her when in use, but Ruby can still wield it without much issue.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Her new move has this. She tries to spin around with her scythe, using the momentum from her gun and her Semblance, but she's yet to perfect this move. Her first attempt sent Ruby flying into Weiss' belongings, knocking over her Dust and infuriating the heiress.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She pretty much takes after her mother, Summer Rose. Both have black and red tinted hair, silver eyes, similar gothic clothing styles. The only differences is Summer has long, wavy hair and pale skin, favouring the colour pink, while Ruby has short fluffy hair and tanned skin that she got from Taiyang.
  • Sweet Tooth: She's shown to prefer things that are sugary, with her favourite food being strawberries and Yang knowing that she takes a lot of sugar with her tea.
  • Tears of Remorse: Her reunion with Blake ends with Ruby expressing her guilt through tears, apologising for hurting her friend and admits that she just wanted their team to be friends like her mother's was. Blake forgives her through a Cooldown Hug.
  • Tranquil Fury: Despite trying to voice her feelings over Blake not joining their team in the Vytal Tournament, Ruby's frustrations grow when Penny is introduced, silently refuting her attempts to introduce herself and leaving the office alone.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: While she says it in her typical haughty attitude, Weiss does call Ruby out for refusing to take her studies and position at Beacon seriously, especially since others had to fight tooth and nail to be accepted. Ruby herself agrees with this despite initially hating Weiss for it, as she admits her lazy attitude to Weiss later on and asks Weiss to help her study.

    Weiss Schnee
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/weiss_height.png
"A Schnee doesn’t lower herself to your standards."

“You have any idea how stupid your little stunt was? You could’ve blown us all off the cliff, you could’ve costed my father a fortune to replace all this Dust you nearly bowled over, you dolt!”

The W of Team RWBY, Weiss Schnee is the heiress of the most influential families of Remnant and largest distributor of Dust; the Schnee Dust Company. Wealth and privilege has gotten to her head, however, as Weiss is egotistical, bratty, and dismissive of everyone around her who doesn't fit into her narrow mindset.

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: She yells at Ruby for accidently crashing into her suitcases, knocking over her Dust vials, and then proceeds to dismiss Yang when the latter came to the defence of her sister. All while assuming that Ruby shouldn't be in the same Academy as her due to her young age. While she decides to work towards improving Ruby through tutoring and support, Yang doesn't believe that she's doing it out of the goodness of her heart.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Not as obvious as the rest of her team, but Weiss currently doesn't have the scar over her left eye that she had in RWBY.
  • Alliterative Family: Weiss, her siblings and her mother all have their name start with 'W' and themed around white. Weiss' is "White Snow", Winter's is "Winter Snow", Whitley's is "Snow White Glade", and Willow's is "Snow Willow".
  • Beneath the Mask: Much Needed Talk goes further into Weiss' inner character. While she shows herself as nothing but a rich girl with a poor attitude and even worse ego, she actually holds herself up to an impossible standard and repeatedly scolds herself for percieved failures. It's shown a lot of her attitude comes from her father, who no longer gives Weiss any praise that she used to get simply for her decision to go to Beacon, and drags her down any chance he gets for the slight. On top of that, her arrogance is shown to be a mask, as she fully admits that Ruby is a better Huntress, and shows some respect for Sun and Blake as warriors and leaders, only being angry because she doesn't know what good she is if she's not the best.
    • Further shown in that, despite her explicit beliefs in the superiority of Atlas, Weiss does want to learn about the other kingdoms of Remnant, especially in places like Menagerie. It's such a turn from her usual self that Yang doesn't believe it at first.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She saves Ruby from being impaled by the Deathstalker's stinger after Yang fails to save her sister. Later on, she also saves Blake from falling to her death during the fight with Iya.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: After her talk with Glynda, Weiss decides to tolerate Ruby and help her in her grades to further herself, fixating on her need to be the most successful team rather than actually building bonds with her teammates. Ruby sees her as a friend, but Blake and Yang see right through it.
  • Break the Haughty: Not being named leader of team RWBY started Weiss' mental deterioration, though she kept her haughty attitude and blatant lack of respect towards her team or Ozpin. After she is chewed out by Glynda and having her demands refused, she is starting to think on her behaviour and improves on it, even accepting Ruby's request to tutor her afterwards.
    • She later is broken further regarding her attitude towards Sun and Blake. After the events at the docks with the White Fang, she learns to admit that she was wrong about Blake and promises to do better.
  • Cannot Take Criticism: The default reaction to any criticism, whether actual or percieved, is Weiss losing her temper and insulting whoever criticised her. Gylnda and Yang are quick to shut it down and push Weiss to learn how to accept that she isn't perfect.
  • Combat Stilettos: Her Huntress outfit has a pair of high heeled wedges.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Her standoffish attitude quickly vanishes when she's around Ruby's service dog; Zwei, devolving into baby talk when talking to or about him.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After the talk with Glynda, Weiss starts to defrost slightly towards Ruby, accepting to tutor her and humors some of Ruby's more childish requests.
    • Near the end of Volume 3, she finally starts to be more cordial towards Blake, listening to Blake's orders after rescuing her, and even gives her a hankerchief to help with her busted nose. Later that night, she finally admits that she was wrong for her racist attitude and apologises, promising to fix what she ruined.
  • Doesn't Trust Those Guys: Given the hostile relationship between the White Fang and the Schnee Dust Company, Weiss has grown up with racist views and distrust for the Faunus, believing that they are too sensitive, stupid and below her status, earning Blake's ire.
  • Fairytale Motif: She's Snow White from the titular fairy tale.
  • Fangirl: Like Ruby, she's one of Pyrrha Nikos. She does everything she can to get Pyrrha on her team, and when that doesn't happen, she ditches her own team to constantly be by Pyrrha's side, even when she's clearly uncomfortable with Weiss and her attitude.
  • Fantastic Racism: Because of her childhood in Atlas, and being the heiress to the SDC, Weiss shows explicitly racist opinions that she has no problem sharing with everyone around her, including both Blake and Sun. Even when Blake is clearly upset with her words, Weiss simply tells her she's being too sensitive and shows no remorse. Black & White shows that she blames the entire White Fang, and all Faunus, for the death of her mother, something that Blake immediately refutes.
  • Foil: To Ruri. Both are upper class, rich girls who suffer from loneliness while hiding it under a facade, showing difficulty in interacting with other people and having impossibly high standards of themselves. However, Ruri hides away her fear and real feelings under a mature but stoic facade, and is actually easily brought out of it by her friends, showing a very close relationship with Eirian. Weiss hides her insecurities and true thoughts behind an arrogant and bitchy persona, and is still very much an Ice Queen who especially hates Ruby.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Ruby, especially since she was made leader and Weiss wasn't. While she tries to hide it after starting to befriend Ruby, Blake can clearly see that she still struggles with her jealousy.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Absolutely adores dogs, especially Zwei.
  • Ice Queen: Very much so. Weiss is cold, reserved and very much unwilling to humour Ruby or any of their team.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Her cold and frosted personality is matched with light blue eyes.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: The argument with Yang ends with Weiss bursting out into tears, venting about her frustration and confusion over nothing at Beacon going the way she envisioned, and even letting loose some of her hidden insecurity.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She tends to show an aura of superiority in her skills and lineage, but A Much Needed Talk shows that she is terrified of finding her place in Beacon if she can't be the best, indirectly praising Ruby, Sun and Blake as better Huntsmen and people than her.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Unlike her very deliberate attitude to everyone else, Weiss doesn't seem to realise just how much her clingy attitude makes Pyrrha uncomfortable.
  • Insufferable Genius: She's one of the top students in her year and isn't afraid to boast about it. Hardly anyone reacts positively to it, with her father unsatisfied and her teammates seeing her as a show off. Only Ruby acknowledges her intelligence and asks her to tutor her.
  • It's All About Me: Nothing seems to bother Weiss unless it has to do specifically with her. Even when pushed to tears by Yang, her following breakdown is all about how hurt she is, showing no concern for Blake until Eirian specifically brings it up.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While none of her group likes the idea, and Weiss did it specifically because she still thinks Blake is with the White Fang, calling the police is something that only helps, given that Eirian and her team specifically got into trouble last time because they worked with a known criminal, brought weapons into the city, and then endangered themselves by engaging with Iya and Banesaw. Later on, Eirian herself tells Ren to go and get whoever they can for backup, even sending one of her birds to Ozpin himself for help.
    • Her attitude towards Ruby is poor, Weiss has a point in getting angry that Ruby is not taking her studying or assignments seriously, especially with Ruby being the leader. While Yang is quick to defend her little sister, even Ruby acknowledges that she hasn't been putting in the effort and asks Weiss to tutor her.
  • Leader Wannabe: Because of her high expectations, Weiss doesn't take Ozpin choosing Ruby as team leader over her well and her behaviour immediately devolves into pettiness and tantrums. She goes behind her team and Ozpin to Glynda and demands that she overrules the decision, which Glynda chews her out for. After the talk with Glynda, Weiss starts to rethink about being the leader herself, and instead chooses to mentor Ruby into being the best so it reflects better on the team; and her.
  • Mafia Princess: The SDC is repeatedly described as a corrupt megacorporation that deals in slavery, depletion of other kingdoms' resources, and subjugation of their workers while busting any attempts of unionisation. Weiss is the heiress of it all, which Blake immediately points out in her first appearance at Beacon.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Weiss is the German word for "white". Not only is she dressed mostly in white, her long hair is also naturally white and her Semblance allows her to summon glyphs that are white in colour by default.
    • Schnee is the German word for "snow". Weiss, and her family, are represented by a snowflake, her character design is cold with a blue and white colour palette, and she has a cold demeanor. Her name together means "White Snow", or her allusion; Snow White.
  • Minidress of Power: Like Ruby, Weiss wears a short dress with white petticoat underneath, while also being a skilled fighter.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother, Willow, died years before AZRE, having died from her alcoholism that was brought on from her stressful home life. Weiss completely blames the White Fang for pushing her family to the brink.
  • Never My Fault: Refuses to accept that her team doesn't like her because of her behaviour, rather blaming them for being jealous of her.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Rather than remain in Atlas and continue her education in business, Weiss left to join Beacon and hone her fighting skill. When questioned by her father, she reveals that she wants to improve ties in Vale to her company, showing a desire to improve her company's image that Jacques is disinterested in.
  • Not My Type: To Ruby, after Blake brings it up.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite her poor behaviour towards Ruby ever since they met, Weiss didn't hesitate to save Ruby from the Deathstalker and helps her back up, showing that regardless of what she thinks of Ruby, she doesn't want her to actually die.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: She has very poor opinions on the Faunus, especially the White Fang. She downright refuses to accept Blake and Sun on the hypothetical team with her and Pyrrha, tells Pyrrha she's too important to hang around with the Faunus students, and even has classist attitudes to Yang and Ruby; two working class students of a single father.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Her retort to Ruby's insistence that Weiss views herself as perfect.
    Weiss: I'm. not. perfect.
  • Royal Rapier: The weapon she's shown to fight with is a rapier style sword with Dust chambers at the base, fighting with it in an elegant style similar to fencing.
  • Spoiled Brat: Her introduction paints her as this. She rants and insults both Ruby and Yang for an accident, as they knocked over her luggage, and is constantly snapping at her staff while they're trying to clean things up, even threatening to get her father involved if they don't perform to her standards. A lot of her attitude is revealed later to be a coping mechanism to hide her crippling low esteem.
  • Tragic Ice Character: Connected to snow and ice through her name, abilities and cold colour scheme of white and blues, Weiss is a girl with a frosty demeanor and a cold attitude. However, she was raised under an abusive father and an alcoholic mother who passed from her addiction.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: She constantly tries to earn her father's pride back, reminiscing about times in her childhood where he was more affable to her. However, Jacques is less willing to give her the praise she desires.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Yang doesn't hide that she distrusts Weiss and sees nothing good in letting her stay in Beacon, blowing up and letting Weiss know in no uncertain terms that she's a brat and her terrible behaviour is the exact opposite of what a Huntress should be.

    Blake Belladonna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blake_height.png
"The world isn’t exactly like your fairytales."

“This isn’t the way. We can’t take our suffering and force it onto others.”

Adam’s adoptive sister and the biological daughter of Ghira and Hajimu Belladonna, Blake was a former member of the White Fang alongside Adam, but was driven away after witnessing him blow up a SDC train that they had highjacked. Although Adam tried his best to find her, he was too late and she was seemingly killed by Iya and Banesaw. She later is revealed to have not died from her fight with the White Fang, coming to Beacon Academy much to the shock of Team AZRE.

  • Achey Scars: The scars she got from her fight with Iya and Banesaw still hurt her years after.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: She has heterochromia, her eyes being one gold and one blue, instead of her gold ones in 'RWBY'.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: She was Adam's ex in RWBY, but is now his younger adopted sister in AZRE.
  • Alliterative Name: Blake Belladonna.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Gives a few to Weiss in Black & White. The first is questioning her intentions on tutoring Ruby for the better of the team, or herself. The second one is much more vicious, as it comes off the back of Weiss finally coming clean about her deceased mother.
Blake: ...You think I care about your dead mother?
  • Badass Bookworm: The most experienced fighter on her team, and fond of reading many genres of books.
  • Berserk Button: Racism. Any time someone says something offensive towards the Faunus, whether intentional or not, Blake is quick to reprimand them and can get quite heated very quickly.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: The reason behind her decision to kill herself rather than let Iya and Banesaw do it.
  • Bizarre Human Biology: As a Faunus, she has two cat ears on top of her head, slit pupils and sharp canines and claws. As with other Faunus, Blake's cat ears mean that she doesn't have human ears like other Faunus (Sun, Adam, etc), though she styles her hair to cover it.
  • Broken Tears: She breaks down at the end of her argument with Weiss, having come clean with how hard she struggled over the years and watched her friend die in her arms. When Ruby chooses to go after the heiress rather than stay and comfort Blake, she's completely broken and retracts her trust in her teammates.
  • Brutal Honesty: She's very blunt in saying what she thinks, showing little care if it hurts someone's feelings if she believes it has to be said. Both Pyrrha and Weiss are subjected to this, though the former takes it far better than the latter.
  • Cat Girl: She's one of the many cat Faunus in the 'AZRE' cast, having a pair of cat ears, canines, nails and slit pupils to better fit her animal theme.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Just like Adam, Blake has this towards the White Fang. Despite the attempt on her life and the differences in views, she still wants to help them and refuses to give up, irregardless of their growing instability. When Weiss asks her what if the White Fang she knew is no longer there, her response?
Blake: Then I’ll keep fighting so that they have another chance.
  • Clear Their Name: Her arc in Volume 3 revolves around clearing the White Fang's name when they're assumed to have returned to Vale City and commit numerous robberies of Dust Stores.
  • Cloth Fu: Both her old and new weapon uses a ribbon around the handle to act as a something for Blake to hold onto when she throws it.
  • Covert Pervert: Like Pyrrha, Blake enjoys romance books that are more on the risque side, and very much prefers to keep that private.
  • Cowardice Callout: Not towards herself entirely, but actually towards Pyrrha. When she comes to Blake and Zanthus to console them after an incident with Cardin, Blake calls her out for only doing so behind everyone's back, on top of repeating that behaviour with Weiss. Given that one of the Faunus targeted was Sun, Pyrrha's teammate and leader, Blake is even angrier that she wouldn't do so for her own friend. Her words shocks Pyrrha into rethinking her motives.
  • Cowardly Lion: While a skilled fighter who's aspiring to be a Huntress, Blake sees herself as a coward who runs from her problems because it's easier, bitterly rejecting Zanthus' opinion that she was in fact brave.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Originally a member of the White Fang, Blake watched the organisation her father created turn into a terrorist group that attacked innocent people for the simple fact that they were humans. Whilst having ran away from her parents with Adam, Blake was abused by him and eventually had to watch her brother go down a dark path.
    • Black & White goes more into it. While in the White Fang, Blake witnessed dozens of her own people being killed in action, including Blake; her deceased friend who was mentioned nearly forty chapters earlier in Adam's flashback. He bled to death in her arms, killed by humans, while Blake could only cry for someone to help.
  • Dark Secret: She's hiding her past affiliation to the White Fang from everyone. In her argument with Weiss, she confesses to her association with the group under duress.
  • Dented Iron: Despite still being a capable fighter, the fight between her and Banesaw/Iya left her with severe wounds on her shoulders and struggling with chronic pain years later.
  • Disney Death: After being beaten by Iya and Banesaw, on top of having her Aura broken, Blake throws herself off the cliff to stop them from killing her. However, it's later revealed in Welcome Committee that Blake didn't die from the fall and actually came to Beacon two years later.
  • Enemy Mine: Whether she likes it or not, Weiss is a member of her team who she has to work with from time to time. Most evidently in the Emerald Forest, where she works with Weiss, and the rest of her team, to beat the Nevemore and escape with the idol.
  • Expressive Ears: Just like Zanthus, Blake's cat ears move depending on her mood. Given her constantly sour personality, she often has them folded back in anger or frustration.
  • Fairytale Motif: She's the Beauty from Beauty and the Beast.
  • Flower Motif: The Belladonna flower.
  • Forced to Watch: Blake couldn’t stop or convince Adam to spare the train, having to watch from the cliff side as he detonated the bombs he put on board, killing everyone and derailing the train itself.
  • Freudian Excuse: Many of her antisocial behaviour stems from her trauma while in the White Fang, and her near death experience after leaving it.
  • Glowing Eyes: Just like every Faunus, Blake's eyes glow in the dark.
  • Good Is Not Nice: She's ultimately a well intentioned girl who just wants to fight for her people's rights her own way, but Blake is not the most pleasant person to be around with her harsh attitude, antisocial behaviour and tendency to jump into arguments. When she's considerably pressed, she will go for low blows; as seen with her admitted indifference to Weiss' loss of her mother.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: She has three scars on each shoulder from where Iya clawed her with her talons.
  • Hates Being Touched: Scolds Zanthus for grabbing her shoulder, smacking his hand away, and looks downright uncomfortable with him the entire conversation. She starts to move away from this as she grows closer to some of her classmates; namely Ruby and Sun.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her dour personality, Blake does enjoy reading romances and erotica.
  • Hide Your Otherness: Averted, unlike her counterpart in RWBY. Blake doesn't wear her headscarf to hide the fact that she's a Faunus, and is very protective of her heritage as seen in her anger towards Sun for assuming she was hiding anything. She wears her headscarf to hide her identity and cover her trail from the White Fang, as she's still technically wanted for desertion.
  • The Insomniac: Her obsession with chasing down Torchwick and helping the White Fang has left Blake exhausted, unable to sleep with her decaying mental state. Even though others have noticed her growing instability, Blake refuses to listen to reason.
  • In the Hood: Her outfit in the White Fang is a more simplified version of her canon Beacon outfit, but with a hood to better hide her face. She later adopts the headscarf of the Leib Tribe when she comes to Beacon.
  • Just Friends: To Sun. They're good friends and Blake is shown to really only trust him at first, but explicitly says that she sees him as just a friend when accused otherwise by Weiss.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: She wielded a katana that was attached to a ribbon to double as a kusarigama, along with a sharpened sheath. Her sword was broken by Banesaw when he and Iya fought Blake in That Fateful Day, later given to Adam, and her sheath is nowhere to be seen. It's later revealed that Blake recovered her sheath, and now wields a hachiwari/pistol combo similar to her previous weapon.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: She's the most experienced in her team by the time they enrol into Beacon, having lived on the road for years prior and still lived in an impoverised kingdom beforehand. She still believes in fighting for her people, but had left the White Fang for going into violence that was too much for her. Without anything else, she decides to go Beacon to try and find her own path through being a Huntress.
  • Leave Me Alone!: Acts this way to pretty much everyone trying to befriend her. However, only Ruby and Sun have managed to get somewhere with Blake with their kind and bright personalities. She pretty much tells Adam this when they reunite, as she hasn't forgiven him for what he did on the train and doesn't want anything to do with him anymore.
  • Little Bit Beastly: As a cat Faunus, Blake has small cat ears instead of human ones.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Blake is Old English for "Black". Not only does she have black hair, but wears predominately black and fights with a black weapon.
    • Belladonna not only means "Beautiful lady" in Italian, connecting to Blake's prettiness and her allusion as Belle, or Beauty, but is also a poisonous flower that's purple in colour. Blake not only wears purple in her design, but has the belladonna flower as her emblem.
    • Her original name, Yaeka, was Japanese meaning "Beautiful night flower", connected to Blake's shadows theme and both her beauty and her flower motifs.
  • Not What I Signed on For: She originally fought for the White Fang, an organisation fighting for the rights of Faunus in Remnant, and had been since she was twelve years old. However, as Blake got older, she started to disagree with how violent the organisation had become and eventually left after Adam blew up an SDC train.
  • One Degree of Separation: She was in Samson's Valley the same time Adam and his team went there to rescue Ruri, but neither met each other because of how vast the mountain range was.
  • Patchwork Kids: She’s more of a mix of her parents compared to her RWBY counterpart. While she has Hajimu's facial features and wavy hair, Blake has Ghira’s Faunus heritage and black hair colour, with her heterochromia being a mixture of Ghira’s gold eyes and Hajimu’s blue eyes.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her original outfit in the White Fang had some purple on it, with the belt across her chest and the bandana on her right arm being purple. In Beacon, her updated outfit has purple accents on her bolero jacket and tinting the bottom of her tights.
  • Saying Too Much: In her argument with Weiss over the White Fang, Weiss' comments finally push Blake to out herself as an ex-member of the White Fang. Her outburst reinforces Weiss' distrust of her, but she runs from the conversation rather than Blake.
  • Scars Are Forever: After her fight with Banesaw and Iya, Blake was left with visible scars on her back and shoulders.
  • Secretly Wealthy: She's the daughter of the Chieftan, the leader of Asíle in Menagerie, and as such lived in luxury before running away to the White Fang. No one outside of Adam and his team knows this, not even Blake's own team.
  • Self-Duplication: Her Semblance allows Blake to create shadow clones of herself to take any attack aimed at her, allowing Blake to evade any damage.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Her time in the White Fang, witnessing the deaths of her people and friends, on top of having to fight just to survive, had left Blake a nervous and distrustful woman struggling with PTSD. Add onto her near death experience with Banesaw and Iya, and just the appearance of them is enough to send Blake into an anxiety attack.
  • Signature Headgear: Her bow from RWBY is replaced by a black hood in the White Fang, and later a Leib headscarf in Beacon. She loses it after the fight with Iya in Complications.
  • Super-Senses: As a cat Faunus, she possesses heightened hearing, being able to listen to conversations from across the room, and can see in the dark like every Faunus.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her eyes are more pointed than any of the other girls, besides Ruri.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Her first version of Gambol Shroud was destroyed by Banesaw when they found her in Samson's Valley. The broken remains were given to Adam to prove Blake's death, except she survived their attempt and built a second version of her sword.

“You think you can handle me on your team?”

“You deserve to be here just as much as everyone else. So what if you got here a little earlier, it just shows how good you are.”

The Y of Team RWBY. A feisty blonde with a protective side to her family, Yang is a new Beacon student that attended the Academy with her younger sister, Ruby Rose.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Like Ruby, Yang has been redesigned with darker skin, a orange gradient at the end of her hair, and with a purple to red gradient in her eyes. Her outfit is her Hunter outfit from Volume 2, but with some parts recoloured.
  • Arm Cannon: Her gauntlets allow her to fire shotgun blasts with her punches, sending anything she hits flying while also being useful in allowing Yang to move around quickly by firing behind her.
  • Badass Biker: Just like canon, Yang has her personal motorbike; Bumblebee, first showing it off to Eirian when the two hang out together and go for a ride.
  • Bear Hug: Subjects Ruby to one after her sister manages to talk to Blake and start making friends herself, and another one when Ruby is named leader of their newly formed team.
  • The Berserker: Revealed to fight like this, forgoing tactics in favour of hitting the enemy straight on due to her Semblance allowing her to use kinetic energy from blows to power herself up. When Blake sees this, she's immediately reminded of Adam and grows wary of Yang because of it.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Blake from Banesaw in Shades of Grey.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Gives Weiss this during their argument while searching for Blake. When the heiress gives one too many snide comments, Yang finally explodes and gives her a massive "Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's very protective of Ruby and constantly worries about her, especially when Yang knows she can't be around forever to protect Ruby. While Ruby is able to go to Beacon with Yang, she tries to get her little sister to open up with new people, helping her make new friends. This goe further to when their fighting, as Yang doesn't hesitate to throw herself into danger if it means protecting Ruby.
  • Big Sister Worship: Inverted. Yang shows that she actually idealises Ruby in her strength and capabilities, shown with her bragging about Ruby getting into Beacon early because she faced off against Roman Torchwick and lived.
  • Blood Knight: While Blake prefers to strike fast from the shadows, ending the fight quickly, Yang enjoys the thrill fighting brings her and is clearly happy whenever she's able to let loose. While Yang doesn't seem to realise it, this behaviour further puts Blake off from her new teammate due to her past trauma with Adam and the White Fang.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Despite her aggressive fighting style and love for it, Yang is most often seen as a caring and almost maternal figure to Ruby and her friends, always offering help and never hesitating to defend anyone from aggression and bigotry.
  • Burning with Anger: Her Semblance allows her to strengthen herself up the more she gets hit. Whenever its activated, her hair is set on fire and her eyes turn red, but Yang's use of her Semblance is often tied into her anger.
  • Cleavage Window: Her low cut tube top and jacket strap going over her collarbones, her outfit creates a boob window that shows the top of her cleavage. Something that Eirian immediately notices.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Her gold hair colour mimicks the fire association she has going on, and even ignites when she activates her Semblance.
  • Eye Colour Change: Similar to her hair, Yang's eyes change from a purple to red gradient to completely red when her Semblance is active or she's angry.
  • Fairytale Motif: She's Goldilocks from Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Fitting for her asymmetrical theme, Yang keeps her outfit assymetrical; her belt is slanted with the second on her left side where she has a purple and red bandana hanging off. Her emblem is also on her left thigh.
  • Flaming Hair: Whenver she reaches a certain amount of kinetic energy, her Semblance can be activated and her hair ignites into yellow flames as a result.
  • Flower Motifs: Sunflowers. Yang's first introduction has her holding a bouquet of sunflowers, and is connected to the sun same way the sunflower is.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Yang is a Chinese character meaning "Sun". Yang is a brightly coloured character with plenty of yellows and whites, and has a Semblance that triggers her hair to set on fire like the sun.
    • Xiaolong is Chinese for "little dragon". While Chinese dragons are not typically associated with fire like European dragons, Yang has some designs to allude to dragons, such as wisps of her hair at the front to style the dragon's whiskers.
  • Missing Mom: She lost her mother, Summer Rose, years before coming to Beacon. However, while Ruby seems to accept that her mother is gone, while still missing her, Yang refuses to accept it and is introduced trying to find Summer with Junior's help.
  • Only Friend: Eirian admits that, even after spending over two years in Beacon already, Yang is one of the few people who willingly hang out with her and Team AZRE. Downplayed with more of the new students hanging out with Team AZRE, minus Adam.
  • Parental Substitute: She very much acts this way to Ruby, constantly looking out for her and worrying similar to a mother would.
  • Patchwork Kids: She's a perfect mix of her father, Taiyang, and her biological mother, Raven. While Yang inherited her skin tone, eye shape and hair colour from Taiyang, she has Raven's long hair. Her eyes are a purple-red gradient, taking from Raven red eyes and Taiyang's purple eyes.
  • Power Fist: Her weapons augment her punches with explosive rounds, increasing Yang's already impressive strength and damage output.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Weiss in Circles, confirming that Blake's less than savoury opinion of the heiress is right and Weiss doesn't care about anyone who she can't use to get herself ahead. It ends up pushing Weiss to tears.
  • Recoil Boost: She uses the blasts from Ember Celica to improve her mobility, allowing Yang to throw her body across great distances at high speeds.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When she's enraged enough or absorbed enough energy to activate her Semblance, Yang's eyes change from purple-red to purely red, and she's shown to be far more hotheaded and reckless when pushed enough.
  • Ship Tease: Even in their first meeting, Eirian is clearly attracted to Yang while Yang herself shares flirty banter with Eirian, which further develops with the two enjoying a ride around the city on Bumblebee, ending with Yang giving Eirian some needed advice over her conflicted feelings about Adam.
  • Super-Strength: Both her normal strength and Semblance give her this. When using her Semblance, Yang's strength grows the more energy she is able to absorb, allowing her to do feats not seen outside of physcially bigger combatants like Banesaw and Icheku. Outside of her Semblance, she's already fairly muscular and shown to possess a higher innate strength than the rest of her team.
  • Theme Naming: Just like Yang herself, Ember Celica is made of Ember (meaning a small fire) and Celica (a flower that also means Heavenly or Celestial). Her weapons are named after fire and stars like Yang is, which makes sense since it's revealed that 'Ruby' names weapons, and knows her sister better than anyone.
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Despite Yang's friendly and caring nature, she has a temper and can easily turn when provoked enough. This combined with the reckless way she fights reminds Blake too much of Adam, putting her off from her new teammate.
