FanFic My Hero Academia + Original Character = Author Tract
This review covers through Chapter 11.
Writing fan fiction generally involves balancing fidelity to canon with adding the author's own touch, thereby creating something that's original but still recognizable as part of the original work's fandom. While RH Junior's Coyote stays true to the plot of My Hero Academia, there's a lot of the author's influence in it, and that isn't a good thing.
The fic is essentially a retelling of MHA with an Original Character- Riley Coyote, who hails from America and is Izuku's Childhood Friend. Since he's the author's main contribution to the story of MHA, and has a large impact on the plot, most of the review will look at him.
On the plus side, Riley is a truer friend to Izuku than Bakugo ever was, so their friendship is heartwarming, even if it has its ups and downs. Riley's Quirk awakening long before Izuku meets All Might strains their friendship, but they're able to resolve the problem together.
On the minus side, Riley's Quirk, while original and amusing, is also rather overpowered. It's similar to Momo's Quirk, but requires less skill to use and is more useful in direct combat, so Riley probably wouldn't have lost to Tokoyami in the Sports Festival.
Another minus, and one that has a larger impact on the story, is Riley's tendency to act superior to others, a trait that rubs off on Izuku. He and Izuku serve as mouthpieces to the author who tell their classmates and even pro heroes how best to use their Quirks, and frequently criticize others' decisions, from the pro heroes' handling of the slime villain to Aizawa(who will be discussed later).
The above seems to be a symptom of a larger problem with the author, whose values tend to bleed into the story and make it an Author Tract. His having Riley's American mother criticize Japan's laissez-faire approach to bullying is understandable, but there are also a few lines showing the author's disapproval of homosexuality. Since the author is also transphobic, I can only imagine how Tiger and Magne will be portrayed if the fic gets that far.
A few characters also end up being bashed. An entire chapter is devoted to calling out Aizawa on his (admittedly controversial) tendency to expel entire classes, as well as his other shortcomings as a teacher, and while it raises valid points, it goes too far. Bakugo gets the same treatment, since while Izuku is understandably less tolerant of his behavior, he's also significantly worse than in canon (not counting the Suicide Dare at the start of the series). Surprisingly, the almost universally hated Mineta escapes this fate; by comparison, the previous two are divisive.
In conclusion, fics like this one will almost inevitably be compared to canon, and be judged by what their authors bring to the table. Coyote personally makes me glad that Horikoshi, rather than RH Junior, is in charge of writing MHA.
FanFic Should be called: Coyote and Izuku are Better Than Everyone
I saw this page and, as a huge fan of My Hero Academia and the Original Character's namesake, decided to check out the fic. It's awful. Izuku and Coyote are pretentious jerkasses who believe they're better than everyone else. All they do is lecture people on how they quote unquote "should" be acting. In fact, they lecture everyone from pro heroes to their fellow students because they are so knowledgeable on everything to do with Quirks and everything they think is correct. If you think they're wrong? You deserve to be fired, you evil prick. Every character is demeaned except Izuku and Coyote, just so our morally superior duo can tell them they're stupid. They even lecture All Might. All Might isn't good enough for these brats. He saved their lives yet all they do is lecture lecture lecture. It's disgusting. I hope Izuku and Coyote get taste of their own medicine and get raked over the coals for their self-absorbed attitudes because they are the worst, but I'm not reading on to find out. I wanted to slap them both for being so disrespectful to every other character. And don't get me started on poor Aizawa. If you ever want to see textbook examples of Designated Hero, Protagonist-Centered Morality, character assassination, and, dare I say it, Izuku the Pure and Innocent and Intelligent and Flawless and Can-Do-No-Wrong Mary Sue (Oh yeah, I'm going there), read this— HA HA HA— No. I can't even joke about reading it. Do not read this. This is the kind of fanfiction that gives fanfiction a bad rep. It spends all its time showing how Coyote and Izuku make things "better" than canon but does the exact opposite. The supposed "fixes" turn the characters into jerkasses. I haven't seen protagonists this unlikable and self-absorbed in a long time. Could someone put them in their place and expel them, please?
FanFic Disappointing. (Spoilers for Chapters 1 to 4)
Initial review: What I enjoy: Coyote has a fun Quirk. The initial friendship between him and Izuku was heartwarming. I was really invested in it, which is surprising since I'm usually meh towards OCs. Although I disagree with what led to it, the twist of 1-A dropping out because of Aizawa is shocking. It's cool to see 1-A and B in the same class.
What I don't enjoy: Aizawa is completely Ron the Death Eatered with an entire chapter dedicated to characters telling him he's awful. The fic also falls into the fanfic clichés of "If you disagree with the MC, you are an irredeemably bad person and must be humiliated/punished." and "Izuku is so smart he blows everyone's minds by telling them how to better use their Quirks, even people far his senior who should know how their Quirks work after decades of using them". Most egregious example: the author changed how Momo's Quirk works so Izuku can tell her she's wrong.
Update: I have now dropped this fic. It has become nothing more than a diatribe that bashes anything in canon that the author- I mean, Izuku and Coyote don't agree with. Those two have become unbearably artificial and pompous. It's like the author hates the canon material. The final straws for me were the instances of homophobia, racism, and continuous mightier-than-thou attitudes from the characters we're supposed to support. I feel more sympathy and empathy for their "enemies".
Final verdict: Skip it, especially if you dislike stories with a major OC or like any character that ever disagrees with or inconveniences Izuku (for they are Evil and must be punished for daring to be mean to precious Izuku).
I'm really disappointed but in hindsight, I should have seen the warning signs.
FanFic This Fic isn't as Smart as the Author Seems to Think it is.
Ralph Hayes, Jr. is somewhat infamous for his fics (particularly his work in the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fandom) consisting more of him trying to "fix" canon material or hammering his beliefs as a Conservative Christian.
This fic centers around the Author Avatar, Riley Coyote who exists primarily to tell the canon characters that they're doing things wrong and that he knows the "correct" way. This includes him (and to an extent Izuku Midoryia) telling characters who should know better than them, but don't because the author wills it. This leads to scenes like Riley calling out pro-heroes' handling of the Sludge Villain. He even calls out All Might for supposedly being reckless when he saves Riley and Izuku from the Sludge Villain. Chapter 4 consists mostly of Izuku telling everyone else that they don't know about their Quirks as much as he does (even though some of his reasonings are completely inaccurate to canon). Basically, it's the kind of fic that exists only so the author can complain about everything they didn't like about the canon work. This leads to characters like Aizawa and Bakugou being vilified and while there might be some valid points about them, it gets lost when the author mouthpieces get off scot-free for how they treat them (Riley physically assaults Aizawa, his teacher, and faces no repercussions).
Riley complaining about things on the grounds of "realism" is also extremely hypocritical to the point of unintentional comedy considering this is a Magical Native American (complete with stereotypical portrayal) with a Toon Physics Quirk named after something from a Dr. Seuss work. Also, his complaining about how Japan treats bullying might have been valid if not for the fact that the author is incredibly insensitive regarding other cultures, homosexuality, and gender identity.
The fic also suffers from the author being so utterly convinced that he's in the right that he doesn't seem to stop and consider that maybe he isn't. For example, Riley and Izuku, due to all of the corrupt teachers they have faced in their lives, have decided to make recordings about any of their potential future teachers' personal information and give them to the other students. And charge them money for it, because isn't that heroic? Now, this is something that could easily be used to spread false information about innocent people. Also, as previously stated, in Chapter 4, Izuku lectures the rest of his class about how their Quirks "really" work and suggests using a lot of support items so they can be more effective when using them. The fic doesn't seem to take into account that carrying a lot of possibly unnecessary equipment into combat is not very practical.
In short, this fic is just the author smugly waving his finger in front of canon and saying "Well, actually..."
