Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:

Ask the Tropers:
openShould we cut Main/WordCruft
Main.Word Cruft was remade into Administrivia.Word Cruft months ago, and I'm thinking we should cut the main redirect, which has 801 inbounds. Is that worth cutting?
openHow to avoid speculation when talking about a situation that's ambiguous?
So, speculation is not allowed. How do I avoid speculating when I add examples to pages such as Ambiguous Situation, Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane, and Ambiguously Human?
openWhen Headscratchers refer to WMG
Many's a time when we've seen someone answering a Headscratcher with "well this might be veering into WMG territory, but...". But what? Why should this be a preface which tropers feel they need to use? They seem to be saying "maybe I'm speculating too much in answering this question". Meh! What's the problem? Why shouldn't you speculate in your answer, if the work doesn't provide clear answers to the question or if the work is naturally prone to speculation? And has anyone ever seriously edited a Headscratcher thinking "nah dude was right, he went too close into WMG territory like Icarus flew too close to the sun, and I'ma have to cut and paste this speculation into the WMG page"? Because if so, that seems extreme and out of bounds. Let people speculate in their answers if they deem it fit to do so, and encourage an editing culture where they aren't like guiltily second-guessing whether they're speculating too much (again, news flash: speculating isn't a crime).
Edited by FlashStepsopenQuestion regarding music pages
Hello. I have a question regarding the music pages in general. While Creator Page Guidelines notes that tropes pertaining to a creator as if it was a fictional character should not be allowed on this page, does it apply to singers/musicians/bands (such as Dennis Wilson, Brian Wilson, Queen, Elvis Presley, etc.) as well?
Edited by gjjonesopenFlame Bait
If Flame Bait tropes are so forbidden, why not just delete them from existence?
openMisuse of Enforced Trope
From PlayingWith.Good Guns Bad Guns:
- Enforced: The primary characters are all soldiers in wartime, who have been trained not to take enemy weapons and who will get in serious trouble if they do.
This is a misuse of Enforced Trope, as it is an In-Universe reasoning rather than something the cast and crew were required to do. But the question is, does this fall under Justified or Invoked?
Also, shouldn't this trope be a Trivia item since it's behind the scenes?
Edited by FridgeGuy2016openInvalid Franchise Use.
Franchise.Tremors has a page but there's only multiple movies and one tv series. How do we fix this?
Edited by WhirlRXopenIs using "one" as a pronoun on this wiki acceptable.
Inspired by this query. I wonder if using "one" is acceptable? Yes, "one" is also a pronoun.
openLocations as characters?
Characters.Fate Grand Order has started listing the various locations in character sheets (seen in "Singularities", "Pseudo-Singularities", and "Lostbelts") which I think goes against the point of a character page but I'd like some further input on this matter.
openUse of "we", "us", etc. on the wiki
I know that first person writing is not allowed on the wiki (because the articles are not about you), but what does that say for pronouns such as "we" (usually referring to TVTropes itself)?
openShould I TRS this?
Virtual Worlds is a page that has seen little activity, has fairly few examples (all of which appear to be ZCE), and seems awkward in layout. Should I send it to the TRS, and if so, under what should I file it?
openWhat names should the Kirby anime page be using? Anime
I noticed that some parts of the page were using the Japanese names, and others the English names. Don't we just use the English ones by default? I thought I heard someone here saying we should stick with one set of names when it comes to anime.
openNamespace Issues Live Action TV
I was going to make a page for the new Netflix show Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, but the Namespace Page said I needed to ask if it was safe first.
openCorrect custom title
Okay, the trope Fourth Wall Shut-In Story has no custom title, which would be a necessity because I have a hard time parsing out its meaning.
Should it be...
- Fourth Wall Shut in Story
- Fourth Wall Shut-In Story
- Fourth-Wall Shut-In Story
- "Fourth-Wall Shut-In" Story
... or something else?
Edited by StFanopenTroper with a few problems?
On Episode Tagline, which I launched today, Cuchulainn added Conversation In The Main Page to the Star Trek: Voyager example asking what the phrase was (for the record, I don't know the phrase, after all it's in an alien language) and for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine example, they added a Zero Context Example under it.
openEdit War in YMMV/Super Smash Bros Ultimate Videogame
A while back I noticed this from YMMV.Super Smash Bros Ultimate:
- This would later be downplayed in Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls where Simon initially displays this attitude towards Alucard, commenting on the dark powers from within him are on-par with Dracula's, only for Alucard to remind Simon that he once fought alongside Trevor Belmont, and comments on both Maria, Shanoa, and Charlotte's impressive abilities in magic.
This was a lone third level bullet "reply" to another example under Memetic Psychopath, which was what first stood out as incorrect Example Indentation. Then looking at the text itself it was all about another game's characterization of Simon and nothing to with Simon in Smash Bros. Ultimate. So I removed it citing both reasons in the Edit Reason.
Tailikku then put it back showing misunderstanding of both reasons in their Edit Reason.
I PMed them telling them the reasons the entry is incorrect, but they did not respond. So I decided to bring it up here, and checking the Page History again I noticed Tailikku was the one that added the entry in the first place, so they're also Edit Warring.
Edited by homogenizedopenShould we keep examples from alpha stage of the game Videogame
Currently the page of Totally Accurate Battle Simulator has tropes from open alpha. This includes units that removed in more recent version. The Devs of the game said that some of the removed units won't come back. Should we keep tropes from alpha stage of the game?
openOne Person (non)Birthday Party
Theres several tropes about birthday (like One-Person Birthday Party or Not-So-Forgotten Birthday), but what to do with non-birthday parties with no guests (wether at all or temporarily)?
Can they still be covered under those tropes, or not?
Specific situation: Alice plans to depart for some time, and organises farewell party for her friends. At first, no one came (there was major issue with hardly anyone paying attention to her plans to leave in the first place), then suddenly everyone came anyway.
Edited by Aazkaal
Laptop Guy just added a whole bunch of wrestlers to Renamed Tropes. Is this correct? I'm pretty sure wrestlers aren't tropes, but the pages in question have in fact been renamed.
