Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Since this is important missing context, the troper who re-added it (leidbag) didn't create the entire entry, but did contribute some of the info.
This matters because an edit war is not simply "readding a deleted entry".
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI forgot to add that detail, sorry.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
- The show is getting a lot of love also in its native Japan as well as Indonesia and Cuba. The former even more so with it receiving Japanese tweets when an episode airs at the same time as the Philippinesnote . It's to the point that some Japanese viewers seem to like the Adaptation Expansion of what is for them a relatively obscure show, while some Filipino viewers deride the same thing as Telenovela-syndrome Padding, largely since they're only tuning in for the mecha fights.
- In Japan's Nico Nico Douga, the Voltes V: Legacy mega trailer received over 90,000 views and 1,300+ comments from mostly impressed nostalgic users who marveled at the attention to detail of the video from the Philippines. Meanwhile, the opening theme trailer has amassed over 100,000 views and 1,700+ comments. Also, the battle between Dokugaga and Voltes V netted over 9,000 views and 360+ comments.
- You can also view multiple Voltes V: Legacy videos with loads of views and comments under the "ボルテスvにすべてをかけた結果" tag at Nico Nico.
- The warm reception of Voltes V: Legacy by Japanese netizens on YouTube is quite heartwarming to behold indeed. As one Japanese comment (translated to English) relayed:
There are not many overseas live-action works based on Japanese originals that make me feel so much respect and love. You can see how "Voltes V" is very popular and loved in the Philippines. This is a work that should be aired in Japan in the form of a "reverse import".
- The reaction is pretty much in line with how the Japanese also positively react whenever other countries clearly have love and passion for their medianote .
- Someone on Twitter combined old Voltes V audio with the new Voltes V: Legacy footage to create a pseudo "Japanese dub" of the first Voltes V combination sequence. It even comes with an old-timey CRT TV effect for good measure!
- Japanese Twitter users also have a lot to say about Voltes V: Legacy. They appreciate the Philippines loving Voltes V so much and how among many other botched anime adaptations, they can feel the love and passion of the Filipino production crew with how Legacy came out.
- Also on X (formerly Twitter), a lot of Japanese fans reacted positively to Legacy paying homage to the unused tank mode of the Voltes V toy in the actual show.
- The "Voltus V, Voltes V en Español" Facebook page is currently doing a Spanish dub of the whole series by Uliax Studio exclusive for the Facebook group full of nostalgic Cuban and Latino fans of Voltes V and Voltes V: Legacy.
- TV rips of Voltes V: Legacy are also being subtitled in Bahasa Indonesia. While the episodes already aired in the Philippines have already reached about 58 episodes or so, the fansubbers have subtitled 25 episodes in Indonesian so far.
- Naturally, English subs of Voltes V: Legacy are also being made for the Anglophone audience as well.
In the edit history, he states that he posted "citations", but most of these are just links to fansubs. I'm pretty sure linking to piracy sites/fansub sites isn't allowed on TV Tropes, and the presence of fansubs doesn't mean it's popular there.
It is true that the original anime is big in those countries, but that doesn't mean they'll like the live action.
I guess the tank thing at least has a news article, but that's one minor thing and only shows up in 2 episodes.
This guy continually claims that Voltes V Legacy has a Japanese fanbase online, but as someone who speaks/reads Japanese, I haven't seen this happening and whenever Voltes V is mentioned, most people are talking about the original anime. Like I said, it doesn't even have a Japanese dub.
The same thing with the "anglophone" point. The person didn't post any proof that Westerners like it, just a fansub link.
Actually, I just noticed something, these links are from a site called GMA Network. The company that produces Voltes V Legacy is GMA Network. It seems like there's some biased reporting going on.
Also calling Voltes V a "relatively obscure" show in Japan is just false. It didn't become as popular as the predecessor series (Combattler V) but it's still HUGE in Japan. People still talk about it, Super Robot Wars frequently mentions it, and they still sell new merchandise of it to this day (example). "Weeb magazines" like Animage, Out, Televikun and the like featured advertisements and fanart of it. Tadao Nagahama is a well known director in Japan.
We have a whole thread about this trope and I sadly agree with deerhonrs, But I think the Voltes V anime DOES count as Germans Love David Hasselhoff, for example fellow Mecha Anime Grendizer had higher ratings in Japan Than Mobile Suit Gundam, but its still notably loved more outside of Japan anyway.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Yes, though the issue isn't the Voltes V anime itself but the live-action one made in the Philippines. I don't think deerhorns was trying to dispute the anime's case though, just pointing out that it's not as obscure in its home country as some claim.
Yeah, I just wanted to point out the anime does count in case its contested. I knew deerhorns left it alone.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Oh I def agree the anime counts as GLDH. I've just seen many people say that Voltes V was a flop in Japan, which isn't true. For reference, this is the anime so popular the actual embassy of Cuba tweeted about it.
Wow you know your stuff! I loved the Cuban dub.
We should just use the designated thread for the trope. If anyone wants to use it go here! https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=16835368600A14898200&page=1

No I am from Paraguay and just REALLY LOVE DUBS. Expecially Latin A Merican ones, I read the articles about Cuba LOVING "Voltus V". The weird part is that I thought I would hate it because I normall hate dubs where a Regional accent is readily apparent.

I removed the Germans Love David Hasselhoff entry over there because apart from being messy and over cluttered like whoever put it there was trying way too hard to prove a point, I looked at the lists and it showed nothing but positive first impressions and the tropers who put it there making assumptions based on those. It's particularly egregious how they even listed individual comments/notes from random individuals and fansubs. I mean, fansubs can simply mean a show has a very small cult following or even just curious individuals who dubbed something for the heck of it. It doesn't prove anything, as far as I'm aware. Even more egregious is the fact that Voltes V Legacy is only seeing what appears to be a dub in Spanish speaking countries, and when I looked at it, it's not even an officially sanctioned dub, just the passion project of a certain few individuals who were fans of the original Voltes V anime and not necessarily the live-action show itself. There's no real evidence that the show became an audience favorite based on those lists.
I'm bringing the issue here because someone who contributed to that entry's list of info decided to readd the deleted entry after I removed it. I'll concede if the list is enough proof to list as GLDH, but I still would like to hear others' takes on what really counts as proof of a GLDH situation.
