Find a Trope:
openHate Sink, Hidden Depths
Someone looks like they're made to be hated. Later, however, the guy is shown (or, more likely, revealed) to be either a more "good guy" than he first appears, or has a sympathetic backstory.
Do we have this?
(Perhaps I want "Subverted/misleading Establishing Character Moment" as a trope too)
openMale version of The Vamp
Title says it all. I would say Ted Bundy was an example as he was rather charming but also a serial killer who used his charm to help him murder people.
resolved Different locations seem like different time periods(?) Western Animation
Okay, this one's a bit complicated:
Is there a trope for fantasy stories, both serious and comedic, being based on wildly different time periods depending on the location the characters are - or even the type of place?
For instance, the character starts the story out in a farm, where technology and culture seems identical to 4th century europe. Then he gets to a castle and the armor and weaponry is straight out of the 15th century. Then he goes to a merchant's guild town, and everyone's wearing 18th century powdered wigs and high-heeled shoes.
openOverly long ID number
Is there a trope for when some company or other institution gives people ID numbers (Or similar things) that are way too long? Definitely happens in real life as I've had some things (I forget what) give you a number with like 15 or 16 digits, even though there's only 7.6 billion or so people in the world so 10 digits would be more than enough for everyone.
openMerged but not Integrated
In Asteroid in Love, two Japanese School Club Stubs—the astronomy and geology clubs—were merged by the administration as the Earth Sciences Club. What we see, in the series, it seems while the clubs were merged, they were not really integrated, despite using one budget—new members have to declare which side they are belonging to, and club activities are still planned as if the astronomy and geology clubs were separate.
It's something quite common in real life, but rarely in fiction, so what is it? I thought about This Is My Side, but it's not quite it, because there aren't any feud between them. It's just they don't have an idea how to operate as one organization.
openActor Dissonance
Do we have a trope for when an actor/voice actor plays two characters of completely opposite natures?
For example, Chiaki Takahashi voices Medli in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, who is a shy, kind and gentle soul, but she also voices Angelica Pickles in the Japanese dub of the Rugrats, who is anything but shy, kind and gentle.
Edited by ZauzTheBlacksmithopenSomething completely different trope? Live Action TV
Is there a Something Completely Different trope for this scenario:
An episode of The Flash (2014) has no superheroics, and instead feels more like the bigger-budget DC Extended Universe in tone, but is a Vacation Episode focusing on Lyla Michaels and Barry Allen's dynamic off-duty with a Special Edition Title.
Fans get confused about the show, and don't realize it's actually part of the Arrowverse.
What trope fits this?
openSleeping Enemies
Enemies that start out asleep or dormant until you approach them, at which point they awake and attack. One example that comes to mind is in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers, where some dungeon Pokemon are found asleep, and can either be avoided, or woken up to provoke a battle.
openFace-Saving Cheat
Alice challenges Bob to a duel. Bob delivers a Curb-Stomp Battle, but by blatantly cheating (sucker-punch, sand-in-eyes, etc.).
Later, it's revealed that he actually did this for Alice's benefit: by cheating, he gives the impression that it might have gone differently in a fair fight, whereas fighting fair from the get-go would have resulted in the same Curb-Stomp Battle and a crushing blow to Alice's self-esteem.
openSports fanatic?
There's gotta be a trope that describes those crazy for sports dudes that often turn up in old school sitcoms???
openExplosive magical object
When a powerful magical object is snapped in half or otherwise broken, it releases the "stored up" magical energy in the form of a shockwave or explosion of some kind.
Example: https://youtu.be/GIM2Jn8Q92E?t=50
openRecycled doll molds
What would the trope be for using the same doll face for two different doll franchises be, like this blog details happened with Peppermint Rose and Lady Lovely Locks, or the Bubble Belles using the Rose Petal Place doll molds?
openSoul being moved into another body & memories
This is somewhat hard to describe, but here's the thing:
- Commonly (i.e as a "law of fiction" of sorts), souls will contain someone's memories and experiences, and as such will retain their sense of self when they're moved into another body in one way or another. Perhaps we have a term for this?
- However, I'm looking for a trope when the above doesn't happen. It's more common for "rebirths" or "reincarnations" where, despite the same soul, the reborn person is effectively a new person with a new "self" and builds new memories.
There may or may not be a discussion on what constitutes a "self" or "identity" in these cases.

This popped up in head. I have no idea why but my friend and me are going crazy. There was anime short where a brother and sister escape like this prison thing and they had like matching special tats. They lived on a mountain side hiding away from them and the both of them never said a word. Both of them were mute. They lived high above the clouds and had this little hut thing that looked fururistc as well. The brother was trying really hard to protect his sister and it was really pretty looking ugh. Its stuck in my head but the picture of its stuck in my mind. They had orange outfits on and I think the girl had short black hair and other was older with a bit longer black hair.
Edited by MasterCrazyRJopenKinda like Spread Wings Frame Shot, but different
We have a trope for when a character is framed in such a way that it looks like they have wings, but is there one for a similar trick done with a different part, such as horns or a tail?
The only example I can think of off the top of my head is in the MLP:FiM episode "Putting Your Hoof Down". There's a shot of Fluttershy looking in the mirror, and the placement of the torn Iron Will poster on the mirror makes it look like she has horns. I checked the recap page but couldn't find the specific trope for it there.
openEdgelord-dere
A character who tries hard to present themselves as a brooding/moody, tough-as-nails no-nonsense hardass, but the persona cracks rather easily (either something compels them to act nicer, or they get themselves into a humiliating situation, etc).
Do we have this?
resolved Unaware of boss' incompetence Western Animation
Is there a trope for when a character idolizes his boss/relative/teacher/mentor/leader even though it's obvious to the viewer (and sometimes most other characters) that said boss is evil/incompetent/cowardly/a pathological liar?
The example I'm thinking of is Hank's praise towards Buck Strickland in King of the Hill.
openLast human refuge
Any trope for when only one human city, village, etc. stands even After the End?
Edited by Unnerving_Posterior
What's the trope when a government has to move off-planet for some period of time due to some kind of crisis or catastrophe?
