Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Hey I've been thinking of proposing another character from Arc of a Scythe but I'm a bit unsure on him. He's part of the Big Bad's crew of psychos in the first book and has a hand in all of the mass murder the groups commits. My concern is that the only think he does to stand out is that he uses a flamethrower to kill his victims out of sadism and I'm not sure that's enough to stand out given the other three members are killing the same number of people, just in less sadistic ways.

Much as I think the idea we "can't" create a page may be completely arbitrary, nevertheless I consistently support creating a work page first before any Monster sub-page work is created. Absolutely nobody in the American hemisphere knows who Maciste is aside from me and a few others, so it's why I made this page before this one.

Yes to Miller and Westcott. No to Ayaka

It is actually a rule that there needs to be three media namespaces before a franchise can be made. That said just making another namespace isn't two hard especially with the game coming out just make one for it based on tropes seen in the trailer or the comic if possible.

[up][up][up][up] Burton's description from the novella might be a good one.

An organization of a dozen lieutenants, a couple hundred street-level thugs and kneebreakers, a scattering of drug cooks, identity hackers, dirty cops, and arms dealers followed his dictates. And a class of perhaps a thousand professional victims—junkies, whores, vandals, unregistered children, and others in possession of disposable lives looked up to him as he might look up at Luna: an icon of power and wealth glowing across an impassable void. A fact of nature.

[tup] Miller and Westcott.

Here's one I'm not sure on:

What's the work?

Otello is an 1887 opera by Giuseppe Verdi, based on the Shakespeare play Othello. While it omits Act 1 of the play, it otherwise follows the story very closely. Our candidate is the opera's take on Iago (here called Jago).

Who is he and what has he done?

The opera starts with Otello fighting a massive storm off the Cyprus coast as he engages the enemy. Jago, Otello's ensign, is at Cyprus watching the storm, and is introduced praying that Otello dies at sea. However, Otello comes through unscathed, announcing his army's victory over the Turks. Jago explains to his stooge Roderigo (who lusts after Otello's wife, Desdemona) that he hates Otello for giving the foppish Cassio an undeserved promotion despite Jago's faithful service.

Jago manipulates Roderigo into helping him by telling him that Cassio is also in love with Desdemona and they need to discredit him. They get Cassio drunk and Jago sends Roderigo to pick a fight with him. This starts a massive brawl and Montano, the governor of Cyprus, is wounded. Jago feigns remorse and tells Otello he can't understand how the brawl happened, and a furious Otello dismisses Cassio, to Jago's pleasure.

The next day, Jago advises Cassio to ask Desdemona to intercede for him and get him pardoned. Left alone, Jago reveals his nihilism in his Villain Song "Credo in un dio crudel", stating that he doesn't believe anyone is born good at heart, and that an honest man is merely a poor actor. When Otello arrives, Jago begins manipulating him to suspect Cassio of having an affair with Desdemona. He then manipulates his wife Emilia into giving him Desdemona's handkerchief, which he will plant at Cassio's house to prove the "sin of love."

He concocts a story that he heard Cassio confess his love for Desdemona in a dream, and stages a conversation with Cassio to make him appear to confess the affair in front of Otello, who resolves to kill Desdemona. When Otello is recalled to Venice, he flies into a rage and strikes Desdemona in front of the Venetians, which alarms them. Jago advises Otello to focus on his revenge and says he will deal with Cassio himself. He then incites Roderigo to murder Cassio that night. However, the plan goes awry and Roderigo is killed by Cassio.

Otello murders Desdemona in her bed, and Emilia alerts the others to this. Jago and others enter the room and Jago admits to telling Otello that Desdemona was unfaithful, but claims he believed it. Emilia then reveals Jago's guilt, and Cassio and Lodovico then arrive and add more information. Otello orders Jago to explain his actions, but Jago refuses and runs offstage. Unlike in the play, he is not shown to be caught, and Otello then commits suicide.

Heinousness?

This is where it gets complicated. Taking the opera by itself, he does stand out as heinous, as he engineers Otello's downfall and the murder of Desdemona, while he also gets Cassio dismissed and tries to have him murdered, which gets Roderigo killed in the process, and shows no remorse for any of this. He also boasts of his misanthropic nature, saying that he enjoys doing evil for its own sake and believes he was destined to be wicked. For good reason he's considered one of opera's most villainous characters.

However, he might come up short compared to his Shakespeare counterpart, as he does not kill Emilia at the end, but simply runs offstage (while some productions do have him stab her, there's nothing in the libretto to indicate this). He's also not shown to kill Roderigo to silence him, as that scene isn't shown onstage, and we're only told that Cassio killed Roderigo in self-defense. As a result, Jago in the opera does not directly kill anyone. While he causes multiple deaths and doesn't care about any of his victims, he might violate the "holds nothing back" criteria, as he could have done worse but chose not to. That being said, it's clear that he doesn't care about Emilia at all, so sparing her life wasn't out of kindness but because he just didn't think of killing her.

Redeeming traits?

He doesn't show any, as he manipulates or tries to kill everyone around him, and while he doesn't kill Emilia, he still treats her badly and shows no real affection for her.

Conclusion?

I could go either way on him. For now I'll abstain.

Saying no to Jago. Iago passes on sheer quality over quantity—even omitting a few of his crimes here undermines the nastiness from the source material.

Since spooky seasons upon us, I thought I'd give a trim job to Carmilla the Series.

Current entries.

  • Baron Vordenberg from Season 2 is an elderly Austrian baron who is a member of the Silas Board of Directors. When he is first introduced, he seems to be a kind and friendly man, despite his apparent disdain for vampires. Once Laura gets him voted as the Chairman of the Board, he immediately shows his true colors by ordering a detainment of all vampires and anything supernatural in Silas University. He has some of the students, including Laura's friend Danny — to whom he lies that he will stop after arresting Carmilla and Mattie — recruited into his militia , and preaches anti-vampire propaganda. It is discovered that, despite the potential consequences, he intends to kill Lophiiformes, all to make a name for himself. After killing Lophiiformes, he intends to execute Carmilla and Mattie, along with any students protecting vampires; the attempted arrest indirectly leads to Mattie's death. After he almost callously shoots one of his men, Laura starts a resistance against him. In the battle, he has his henchman Theo betray them and kill Danny. In the finale, he has the other board members shot over the announcements and prepares to behead Carmilla, in front of Laura and their friends, taunting them all to their faces while doing so. Despite his seemingly doddering demeanor, Vordenberg is far more dangerous than meets the eye, his claims of heroism being lies he tells to fuel his ego, not caring who he has to kill to live out his fantasies of personal glory.
  • The Carmilla Movie: Elle Sheridan was a noble woman who, discovering her lover Carmilla was a vampire, betrayed Carmilla to her mother before her death. Unable to cross into the afterlife with the other souls of the sacrifice victims, Elle grew to resent Carmilla and Laura's life together. Elle began to torment Laura with nightmares, luring her, Carmilla, and her friends to her mansion. Gathering the souls, Elle manipulated them into preparing a ritual that would help them move on to the afterlife, with Carmilla willingly giving up her human life. Unbeknownst to them, Elle plans on stealing Carmilla's life for her own, and condemning the rest of the spirits back into the hell dimension forever. Despite her past, it's pointed out she wasn't the only sacrifice and the others never turned evil, with Elle admitting to her jealous and selfish motives, with disdain and indifference to everyone else. Elle picks off Carmilla, Laura and their friends, trapping them in their nightmarish hell; Carmilla's in particular reliving Elle's betrayal over and over again. When Laura rescues her friends and the other ghosts to prepare the ritual, Elle makes one final attempt to disrupt them, holding a knife to Carmilla's throat. Originally seen as a tragic figure of Carmilla's past and even a benevolent force in the first season, Elle ended up becoming a dark far cry of her previous self.

Rewrites. Neither Elle and Vordenberg are in the 200+ club.

Yeah, it's just I'm flipping the coin on whether I'll EP him early on or save him for Halloween.

It's gonna be Theo Straka. In the series proper, he's is Hate Sink who crosses the Moral Event Horizon, but the canon side story Transmissions From The Pit adds more to his involvement and complacency in Inanna's plans.

And before anyone asks, no Inanna herself does not and can not count.

Hey guys made it to Miami to get away from the the Chaos caused by Hurricane Ian. Anywho since its now been 2 weeks since The Woman King was released in theaters lighty and I’ve got a pair of candidates worth discussing while Wet and I wrote this EP for my candidate while there was no power (It might not be perfect) but I did discuss them with Light and Wet prior to the hurricane and they think he keeps, and Wet will take care of the write-ups so here it is

What’s the Work?

The Woman King is an American historical epic film taking place in the 1820s and centered around the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit led by General Nanisca dedicated to protecting the West African kingdom of Dahomey, with their current enemies being European slavers and the Oyo Empire that has been helping them enslave the people in Africa, led by General Oba Ade.

Who is he? What has he done?

General Oba Ade is the leader of the Oyo Empire who. in his efforts to expand his empire, allied with European slavers where Oba would raid countless tribes and kingdoms throughout West Africa, killing any who may oppose Oba while sending the defenseless, mostly women and children, to the Europeans where they would be sold as slaves to their clients.

Among the villages Oba had raided and pillage, the village Nanisca was living in was one of them where Oba would keep her imprisoned as a Sex Slave for Oba to rape constantly until Nanisca was able to escape one night where she would then give birth to a daughter, Nawi, as a result from one of Oba’s rapes.

Nanisca would meet Oba again in the present time, where he and the slavers led by Santo try to coerce the Dahomey kingdom into participating in the slave trade. When the Dahomey Kingdom refuse to do so, especially Nanisca, Oba would then try to annihilate the Dahomey and capture any survivors to the slavers to be sold into slavery.

However the Agojie manages to attack Oba and his forces first resulting in a brutal battle where Oba kills many female warriors before he and his forces retreated, but not before taking any survivors from the battle where Oba intends to hand them over to the European slavers, among them includes Nanisca’s daughter which also happens to be his own daughter.

As Oba and his forces arrive in a port city to trade his captives to the slavers, the Agojie led by Nanisca invade the port city to rescue her daughter and the rest of the slaves and kill Oba as revenge for raping her and enslaving her people. Oba would also respond by killing many of Nanisca’s people, including her friend, before battling Nanisca, where she manages to kill Oba.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

The only thing about Oba’s past was that he held Nanisca prisoner where he repeatedly raped her before she escapes and was leader of a vast empire. That’s it, and Oba doesn’t care that he’s killing and enslaving his own people to the Europeans, including his own daughter, so long as he can expand his empire and get rid of any opposition against him, while making money for his part in the slave trade.

Heinousness

While Lighty has his own candidate to discuss, Oba definitely clears it here for the movie raiding and pillaging countless tribes, where he would either kill innocent people, or send them to the Europeans to be sold as slaves, even willing to kill his own daughter before deciding to sell her off to slavers for profit, while being the only character to have committed raped in this rape, a crime a repeatedly committed on Nanisca, so yeah I’d say he passes

Final Verdict?

I’ll leave it to you guys.
