Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alright, looking into the Red World YMMV, i have a ton of concerns about Bal Thackeray, for reference here is his entry

"Bal Thackeray is the leader of the Army of Shivaji, a Hindu Fundamentalist Paramilitary Group that emerges in the wake of the Bharatiya Janata Party's empowering of the far-right. If the Bharatiya Janata Party initially reverses efforts to suppress them and installs Thackeray's nephew Raj Thackeray into the Indian government, Bal Thackeray and his movement will use this opportunity to take control of the entire government. Once in power, he uses Raj as a puppet, along with a combination of bribery and working with the Mumbai Mafia to consolidate power. He will then seal off India from Bangladesh and Pakistan' re-implement the caste system' and launch violent pogroms on Muslims that could potentially spread to other minorities in India, resulting in said minorities either being expelled from India or segregated in areas totally isolated from the Hindu population."

As bad as his actions are, dictatorships are nothing new in the work. There are literal genocidal organizations with less resources, a prime example being Theresa Brasier, whos also a CM, and the new confederacy, and dictatorships in general are very common in the work.

Sure, segregation and an eltist system are scummy, not to mention his deportations however these are nothing new in the work, and being the leader of India, a very rich country he has the ability to clearly do worse.

For me, he is a clear cut, a hate sink? for sure, but ultimately he does not pass the standards of the work

Neither D or Potimas is the Big Bad because the story sort of doesn't have one. D is the more important character, but is a Greater-Scope Villain beyond the ability of anyone to deal with. Potimas is more like a necessary obstacle that needs to be overcome but defeating him and his plans is not enough to solve the plot.

Neither of them really have any redeeming characteristics. D's evil is kind of, what, absorbing? Entertaining? You almost admire just how terrible she is. Potimas is just a Hate Sink.

Oh and just to make sure, we good for these quotes, right?

"This is real. He's a real monster, and he's not brooding, or lovesick, or noble. He's the fucking shark from Jaws. He kills, he feeds, and he doesn't stop until everybody around him is dead."
"Evil" Ed Thompson on Jerry Dandridge, Fright Night (2011)

"What if there was no rage in this person haunting Midland County? What if he just serenely planned his (murders) and carried them out methodically, his emotional level akin to pushing a shopping cart through a supermarket while crossing items off a list? There was no rationale for these crimes other than that whoever was committing them liked it."

Look good.

Also speaking of Fright Night, I have been wondering why doesn't Jerry from the original Fright Night (1985) count as a CM, when a bunch of his other versions do including the one from the novelization of the same film, I tried to find this but wasn't able to. Not suggesting him or anything like that, just wondering.

I did notice this entry on the film page.

However it doesn't really explain it well so I didn't really know if that was the reason.

Let's do it this way: Does one have a significantly bigger impact on the plot than the other (e.g. Big Bad vs. Villain of the Week)? If so, that one can go first.

D has more bearing on Kumoko/Shiraori's half of the story, with Potimas only getting involved towards the ~⅔ mark.

Potimas has more bearing on the human/dragon reincarnates' side of the story, which is set 16 - 14 years after Kumoko's half; while D is only indirectly involved as the Greater-Scope Villain.

[up] Because her plan to save the world from imploding requires killing enough people — like, in the hundreds of thousands to millions — to replenish the Other World's magical energy store & dismantling the System, which IIRC is a necessary evil since nothing else will fix the problem Potimas and D caused. Sure, she's also a spider-goddess who thinks nothing of eating people, is abusive towards her foster daughter, and has the hots for her grandma... but that's beside the point.

I thought Shiraori is Kumoko? Or am I missing something?

Anyway D is the first CM played by Saori Hayami well Potimas is another for Toshiyuki Morikawa

[tup]Ravok's quotes.

Also Shout Factory has started to officially translate the various sentai and Rider series. So we're going to have to update names to what they use for its official English version as time goes on.

[up][up][up] Yes, Kumoko became Shiraori by eating Potimas' magic nuke, but her big plan to save the world effectively involves committing genocide on humanity — in part because D rigged the "Taboo" skill to misinform those who max it out that humanity is solely responsible for the world's impending doom. To elaborate:

Kumoko was the first reincarnate to be born due to hatching as a spider-monster in the Great Elroe Labyrinth. She spent two years fighting and evolving, with D occasionally prodding her along to get some more amusement from her suffering. Kumoko evolved into a unique spider-monster form, escaped the Labyrinth, and killed the Queen Taratect who'd given birth to her — drawing the ire of Potimas' daughter Ariel, who'd become a demigoddess and the progenitor of the Taratects.

Kumoko evaded Ariel and settled in the forest outside a kingdom whose royal family she'd saved from some bandits, coming to be worshipped as a divine beast after she healed some people. She foiled an attempt by some elves to kidnap the princess — a vampire reincarnate named Sophia — but murdered the noble of a neighbouring kingdom when he tried to capture her, leading to a war between the two kingdoms. Kumoko evolved into an arachne, saved the vampire princess, and was attacked by one of Potimas' cyborgs — being saved by Ariel, who'd been Heel-Face Brainwashed by a fragment of Kumoko's soul.

Kumoko, Ariel, the vampire princess, and the vampire princess' attendant foiled Potimas activating an anti-dragon superweapon, leading to Kumoko apotheosizing into a goddess. She and Ariel then put together a plan to save the world from collapse by slaughtering countless people and dismantling the system, assembling an army of demons and powerful monsters to do so.

Shiraori is the Big Bad of someone else's story. There is a side character that is a stock light novel protagonist and she's basically the villain of his story. She is not the villain of the story a whole and occupies a fuzzy space between Anti-Hero and Anti-Villain.

Not that it matters. She definitely doesn't qualify for this trope, so any discussion of her is getting off topic. Potimas is an Arc Villain, D is a Greater-Scope Villain and the story as a whole lacks a Big Bad unless you want to consider this that one side character's story. This is probably intentional.

Potimas and D both pretty much qualify for the trope.

Are we just missing write ups for the two of them?

I Ts not really possible to watch Fright Night and think Jerry is a CM:

  • He's genuinely a pleasant guy who offers Charlie a real chance to just leave him alone and states he has no choice but to be what he is
  • He makes a real effort not to hurt Charlie's mom. He states he genuinely doesn't wnat to harm her and retreats rather than do so
  • He clearly cares for the woman in his past who die long ago
  • He's close friends with his ghoul Billy

The thing is, he doesnt really commit outright genocide (as far as i remember), moreso just implement segregationist and deportation like policies, and thus fails to the dictators that actually commit genocide (Theresa,Confederates, Syrian Far Right, Etc)

I guess you could argue he commits cultural genocide? Though either way, his actions are way too common in his work

  • Potimas is the man responsible for the current state of the world and several times over at that.
    • Due to his pathological fear of death and inherent sociopathic nature, he developed technology derived from kidnapping baby dragons and experimenting on them. The technology in question taps in the life force of the planet and it's quite clear he knows that using this technology puts a strain on the planet that it can't bear but lies and says it's safe. Using the resources acquired by this world ending tech, he proceeds to begin with human experimentation, including treating his own daughter Ariel as an experiment to create immortality. In the process, he turns her into a spider/humanoid hybrid that looks entirely human but stopped aging and produces toxins that left her in constant agony during her childhood. Then when he got caught, he unleashed a vampire apocalypse to cover his tracks. Thousands of years later his only comment on Ariel is annoyance that whatever he did to her actually worked but he can't replicate it.
    • Later, during the early stages of the apocalypse, he intended do siphon off the power of Sariel, who was going to willingly sacrifice herself to save the planet. To stop this from happening an alternate solution in the form of the System was granted them. Said System is akin to turning the entire planet into both purgatory and a combat RPG for the sick amusement of an evil goddess, D.
    • With this System in place to begin restoring the planet, he hampers the efforts by continuing to use the world ending technology, using up the majority of the energy intended to repair the world that was on the verge of exploding outright. He leaves just enough that the place won't blow up under his feet, still pursuing his goal of immortality inside his Hidden Elf Village with elves being nothing but a Slave Race he runs as a cult by kidnapping people and converting them into more elves.
    • Finally, when the world is almost healed despite him, he sees the opportunity to get rid of one source of paranoia by tricking the previous generation's demon king and hero into launching an attack at Gyulie, who is trying to help heal the world. The attack fails due to intervention from Sariel redirecting the attack to D but in the process this drains the world's restoration all the back to 3% when it was over 90% before. This basically guarantees the destruction of every soul stuck in the System because they cannot take the abuse required to fill the meter again.
