Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up] & [up][up] Is this about my post re. Norman Osborn? I find it interesting, though, that Cletus Kasady also underwent Heel–Face Brainwashing and expressed remorse for his crimes, but this didn't disqualify him — I presume since he was restored to his original self and went right back to butchering people For the Evulz. If that's the case, if Norman's Heel–Face Brainwashing is undone and he goes back to being the Green Goblin, would that re-qualify him?

[up][up][up][up]Since we cut Norman on the grounds of him genuinely caring for Harry, I doubt he's going back up any time soon. If he does try to murder Harry like he did in Dark Reign, one could make an argument that he ditched that one redeeming quality but even then, it would be a very hard sell.

EDIT: Just read your re-eval for Norman and...I dunno if recent comics revealing his care for Harry to be fake is enough. Guess we'll let the thread decide when the time is right.

Tbf Cleetus is kinda back. He's just no longer human but a symbiote himself. Its weird.

Did Knull do anything in King of black before his death worth adding to his entry?

[up][up] Destroying or enslaving several worlds; ripping the Sentry in half, killing Eddie out of spite; enslaving the Avengers, several X-Men, and dozens of civilians; trying to steal the Ebony Blade and mocking Dane Whitman for believing Merlin's lies about its true nature; attempting to rewrite history by resurrecting Mister E in the past to prematurely free him; torturing Thor and Dylan... and then getting curb-stomped by the resurrected Eddie.

But Defenders (2021) reveals — or at least strongly implies — that Knull is an incarnation of Anti-All, a Draconic Abomination embodying Oblivion that was said to have originated in the Below-Place (and thus been created by the One Below All) and sought to destroy the Third Cosmos. Wouldn't that kinda remove Knull's agency seeing how he'd be Made of Evil?

I don't think that matters. Evil in marvel is pretty aware of what it is and chooses and refines what it can do?

Its why agency is possible to even cosmic beings?

Or demons who are also canonically constructed from evil.

So, my next Vampire the Masquerade CM lot..we have a Toreador, a Tzimisce, a Tremere and a Ventrue. Toreador first: Enver Frasher.

Who is Enver Frasher?

a notorious Toreador, one of the absolute worst of the worst in all the Camarilla to the point other vampires are all "This is fucked up" about this guy. Enver was born in the 1700s and became a struggling musician. Toreador, you see, are a very artistic clan and his Sire expected him to do and achieve amazing things. Unfortunately, Enver never quite hit that point. Instead, Enver began to find talented musicians and killing dozens of them to plagiarize their work, keeping trophies from them. This is a practice he holds up into the modern nights.

What sets Enver apart is his absolute love of sadism. Crossing Enver or simply annoying him is a sign for him to absolute ruin your life. He drives his victims to madness, murders everyone around them and makes an artistic show of their absolute devastation before ending their lives. Enver is mostly able to get away with this because of his effectiveness, such as sending a pack of Lupines into Mexico City for a bloody massacre, which also caught up the Sabbat and during WW 2, he did other Toreador a favor by saving artists they liked from the Death Camps.

That said, on his spare time, Enver is always breaking someone. He happily kills his victims in the most painful and mentally agonizing ways, taunts their loved ones with body parts and at one point ruined a mortal's life by framing him for Enver's own crimes after creating a serial killer profile with his own blood draining.

And he loves killing people and positioning the bodies in creative and artistic ways.

Mitigating issues?

For a relative weakling (a tenth generation) Enver is wow. He's an out and utter monstrous sadist with absolutely insane levels to the extent he will go to shatter someone's mind and ruin them. Other vampires make attempts not to kill people at least openly. Enver does not care and tortures his victims to the greatest extent he can.

The only good you can say about him is him rescuing two artists from the Nazis, but it's indicated this was because the Toreador as a whole favored them and Enver gets away with his proclivities by doing his job well for the Camarilla. Blind eyes get turned as a result.

It says a lot that being a serial killing, mass murdering sadist is Enver's hobby

Conclusion?

Yep

Funny enough, my remaining Tzimisce has nothing to do with Body Horror at all.

My next real quick, from a short horror story...

What's the work?

Diet Riot is a horror anthology by Nico Bell and Sonora Taylor, both of whom have stories featured in the book. The book is a fat-positivity horror antho, with the ending story by Sonora Taylor, Diet Riot, "Easy Bake," where a woman named Crystal is on a baking show called Easy Bake for a particular network...unfortunately for her...

Not everyone is gonna walk off... the host of the show?

Michael.

Who is Michael?

Michael, not his real name, is the host of Easy Bake for an underground network, as described by the author as British Bake Off meets Squid Game. Contestants are lured in, with a major cash prize...only problem is, well...

The games are fatal. to lose is to die. The opening of the story is far into the competition where the bakers are held hostage and forced to compete in bake offs in cakes. The one eliminated is immediately executed by the guards, as seen when Michael draws things out between Crystal and a baker named Beth, before having Beth's throat slit...Crystal's surprised. Usually they use guns.

This is made clear to be long running and routine with Michael delighting in tormenting his victims and insinuating they can't leave, with only a few of the contestants left. Crystal, a woman named Ming and a man named Lee...Michael, as a nasty little joke, decides they'll bake a meat pie for the final judging and uses Beth's body for the meat...

However, in the ensuing chaos, Ming reveals she's got ideas going on and puts in extra nutmeg...just enough to poison people. Chaos ensues and Lee disarms a guard, though he's killed in the process but not before the guards and judges going down, leaving Crystal to level a gun on Michael and gun him down.

The network heads reveal the slaughter was a huge hit, so they offer Ming and Crystal the prize money together...the two, realizing they have no choice but silence, open a bakery together...where they occasionally get visitors who subscribe to the network...

And Crystal ensures she poisons them, opting to chip away at the subscriber base, one person at a time.

Mitigating issues?

Nah, Michael's killed tons of people. He's responsible for plenty of horrible actions and delights in it. The end has the network head reveal Michael was just bluffing about the ininuation pulling out means death...he only implied it, for his own amusement.

Nothing good. He's just a nasty sadist who hosts a death game.

Conclusion?

Yes.

Update to Knull's entry:

  • Venom (Donny Cates), Silver Surfer: Black, King in Black: Knull, the God of Symbiotes, predates almost all existence. Despising the light of existence, Knull warred with the gods and consumed entire worlds before creating the symbiotes and loosing them on civilizations to devour them, killing countless billions. Eventually betrayed and sealed off by his own "children", Knull returns and attempts to torture Eddie Brock's symbiote to relieve it of any honor and nobility, intending on recovering his old power and resuming his mission of devouring all life-starting by consuming everyone and everything on Earth. After being freed by Carnage, he destroys or conquers several planets either personally or using symbiote-dragons, and kills several Celestials out of petty vengeance before reanimating them with symbiotes. Arriving on Earth, Knull rips the Sentry in half and infects most of Earth's heroes and dozens of civilians with symbiotes, sends his horde to slaughter, devour, and infect other citizens, kills Eddie Brock, tries to rewrite history to prematurely free himself, and tortures both Thor and the teenaged Dylan Brock when they try to stop him.

Alright been a moment since I've done an EP and so I'll leave you guys with an... unusual one.

What is the work?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a game that I'm sure most of you are aware of. During the Dawnguard quest line you can explore the Fort that the Dawnguard reside in. Hidden in the caves behind the Fort is a small mine where the player can grab some loot and find a book called Confessions of a Khajiit Fur Trader. This is the only place in the game you can find the book and it has quite a horrific story starring our character for discussion, the titular fur trader.

Who is the Fur Trader and what have they done

The Fur Trader was once the child of a rich Khajit who was forced to the streets with his brother after their father's estate burned down along with the fortune. From there the brothers had lived in poverty until the Fur Trader swiped someone's purse, eventually joining a gang and beginning a life of scamming and robbing people. Eventually the Fur Trader wants to move out of it but his brother convinces him to continue to help them leave the life behind and become legitimate traders so they planned one final heist.

Despite their efforts, the heist ends in disaster with the wagon they tried to rob crashing and the brother dead. The Fur Trader checks the wreckage and discovers the wagon was full of pelts. Taking the pelts, the Fur Trader also takes a pelt of his brothers Fur as a memento. When trading the pelts with a Trader, the Fur Trader ends up selling his brothers pelt when the other Trader offered triple the amount for that pelt.

From there the Fur Trader continued, ambushing innocent people and slicing them to harvest their skins, getting more precise and richer in the process. There wasn't a discrimination with who the Fur Trader would murder for their skins and other body parts so long as he got the coin. His operation grew so big that he had his own stronghold and had a sizable operation to work for him.

Eventually though, the guards found out the Fur Trader's stronghold and massacred everyone but taking the Fur Trader to be executed. Unbeknownst however, The Fur Trader writes that he has a lockpick and will not be executed the next day and will continue the trade until his demise, leaving behind a legacy.

Mitigating Factors?

There's no indepth detail of how it was for The Fur Trader when slumming it and his Riches to Rags story isn't sympathetic considering how horrific he gets when going Rags to Riches.

Does he care for his brother? I think he used to but he subverts it I think when he sells his brothers pelt. This quote is what makes me think that.

"Disgust caught in my throat, but did not live very long. I realized the cost of such a forbidden luxury. The value, the demand, the respect. This is what I wanted."

And he originally was wanting to quit the crime business so the coin made him do a full 180 despite his brother wanting to go legit after the wagon heist.

Now the main mitigating concern of mine is that this is told in a book. There's no other references to the "Fur Trade" and this book is only found in this specific location in Skyrim. There's not even any confirmation this is real although it being written as a confession by the Fur Trader before his "execution" makes me think it might be.

Heinous Standard?

For once I don't think this a concern. The Fur Trader has a uniquely depraved niche even in the dark world of the Elder Scrolls and a great example of From Nobody to Nightmare as he is for all accounts a mere human-er cat person with no magic or powerful weapons yet created a horrific operation simply out of greed and wanting a legacy.

Final Verdict

Leave to you guys, the circumstances of it being in a book make me doubt it but the tropes YMMV for a reason.

I'll trust you Enver's bad enough for his level; the ruining life seems unique at least, and he's not a Tzimisce, so that helps.

Where should Enver and Zarnovich go on the page? And I wonder if we should organize Vampire (at least the non-spinoffs) by vampire group and then by clan.

Speaking of Zarnovich, I ask again: Is he behind "They force humans into Gladiator Games, bury children alive to hear the echoes of their screams, lobotomize 140 psychiatric patients, and even create deadly sports just to find new ways to torture people"?

Yes to evil Gordon Ramsay. Crystal seems like a Magnificent Bitch candidate.

Fur Trader...maybe. Show Within a Show thing.
