Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Tree's a little confusing there ACW. I'd put Medea and the king (if he's only in the Web Novel) under a specific heading so it doesn't look like they appear in all adaptations.

If someone wants to help with who goes where, please feel free.

Man, she is such a memetic Hate Sink that I am impressed she finally went here.

[tdown] Malvina Hazen—the Freudian Excuse of "I nearly got murdered as a child, so I'm going to be utterly brutal to survive" is really strong and the mentions of she having constant nightmares about it just are too much

Gonna be a little less active for a few days, I've discovered my dog has passed away but I'll leave an EP for you guys.

What is the work?

Dragon Quest IX is the 9th entry of the Dragon Quest series. You follow a fallen Celestrian (basically an angel) who was struck out of the observatory by an unknown calamity. Following a story spanning multiple mini arcs you find out that the main antagonist Corvus The Fallen Celestrian is behind the calamity and resurrection of the Gittish Empire (local human bastards) and also the character I want to propose. Barbarus The Dragon.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

Barbarus is an ancient dragon who aided the Gittish Empire with their acts of conquest 300 years prior to the story before being killed by Greygnarl, another powerful dragon who's also his brother. Resurrected along with the Empire, Barbarus seeks to get revenge on Greygnarl while aiding the empire with their plans.

Barbarus is first encountered in the story when the player is seemingly betrayed by their mentor Aquila and is heading en route to Upover with one of the higher ups of the Empire called Hootingham-Gore to kill Greygnarl as revenge for his previous defeat not before sending a test shot towards the Starlight Express to show how "fired up he is".

After befriending Greygnarl after giving him a drink Barbarus attacks Upover forcing Greygnarl to fight his old foe once again. Although seemingly winning, Greygnarl gets stunned when Barbarus reveals the true extent of his newfound powers since being resurrected. Not content with simply killing Greygnarl, Barbarus forces him to watch as he sends a ball of dark energy towards Upover intending on obliterating it before finishing off Greygnarl forcing the Dragon to commit a Heroic Sacrifice.

Barbarus is later at the Gortress (Gittish Empire's slave keep) to wipe out the prisoners after they rebelled against the guards, killing one of the guards there who was knocked onto the ground before getting rammed out of the sky by the Starlight Express.

Barbarus is next seen flying with Corvus to the realm of the almighty to warp it to his image and aid him with the obliteration of existence, fighting the hero before the final battle against Corvus before dying for good.

Freudian Excuse or Mitigating Factors?

Agency isn't an issue as monsters in the series are shown multiple times to be aware of actions and can be good.

He's helping the empire but he never showcases genuine loyalty to them. Likewise with Corvus he serves him in the final arc but he never says anything about it and only tries to stop the heroes since they're trying to stop Corvus' plan of being an Omnicidal Maniac.

Despite being with Hootingham-Gore heading to Upover, he disappears after killing one of his soldiers for failure there and there's no on screen indicator that someone sent him to wipe out the prisoners so he's doing things on his volition.

As for freudian excuses... next.

Heinous Standard

Has 2 attempts of mass murder under his belt along with aiding of the obliteration of existence under his belt so that's baseline sorted out.

King Godwyn commits atrocities like they're hobbies but he has a whole empire under his thumb so massive resource difference there.

Corvus resurrected the empire, Godwyn and Barbarus and attempts the destruction of the universe but with the Empire business, they have full control of their actions, Corvus used it as a way to boost his power. (He makes a Heel–Face Turn incase you're wondering) He also had the power to strike down God himself so major strength difference there.

Bosses will say stuff that they intend on doing horrible stuff but there's no weight to it, just a motivator before the boss fight.

Now Yore... a character I got successfully proposed up. He's wiped a kingdom out in a night and intending on wiping out all mortals and all he was, was a glorified demonic mercenary albiet a powerful one. Still Barbarus has two counts of attempted mass murder with one being a settlement as well along with all of the prisoners in the Empire's slave stronghold so that's a lot of attempted blood on his hands er wings. That added detail of forcing Greygnarl to watch him attempt to destroy Upover just because he doesn't find killing him simply enough also adds a sadistic touch to Barbarus as well. Then add on aiding Corvus with the obliteration of existence...

Verdict?

Thoughts?

Also apologies if the EP seems dysfunctional, it was typed on my phone.

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, you entertain me. To show my appreciation, I will help you awaken from your world of clichés.

[tup] LN!Malty, Mir's pics, and Barbarus

Sorry about your dog, Wet.

Who's ready for more Dead to Rights? Or more importantly, who's ready for late 2000s M-Rated edge?

What’s the Work?

Dead to Rights: Retribution is a reboot of the DTR series, and the final game in the franchise.

Released in 2010, Retribution is meant to serve as a Darker and Edgier and a Bloodier and Gorier game that rides the coattails of gritty, brown-coated cover-based shooters like Gears of War. Instead, the story’s a juvenile slog with even less likable characters than the first game.

Here, Jack Slate’s an incredibly beefy “honest cop” who trades in his one-liners for random profanity, while Shadow’s more of a wolf than a dog, able to sneak behind goons and tear their testicles and hearts out. Anyways, after his father Frank's been killed, Jack mows down several gangs to seek revenge. The streets of Grant City will be paved with blood.

And while the main villain turns out to be Jack’s friend on the force Redwater, he’s not who I will be proposing. Instead, I’ll be proposing several three people close to him, who lack his well-intentioned motives.

Who is He?

Julian Temple, the owner of the Temple Network, is a famous media mogul who wants to be seen as Grant City’s savior.

What has he done?

Responsible for hiring the villainous Riggs to carry out his plans, Temple supplies Riggs with guns and money to cause as much chaos and mass panic as possible, having him goad other gangs into causing as much chaos and mass panic as possible.

Temple has Riggs raid his own building Temple Tower and kill the hostages inside–while pretending to be a hostage himself to disguise his involvement, even making himself out to be the brave voice of hope; Temple even tells Riggs to make him look good during the raid–and an attempt to destroy Grant Central Station with several bombs. But there's a reason Temple wants to spread fear amongst the populace.

And that’s because Temple’s also responsible for funding Redwater’s G.A.C. troops and granting them more power by establishing their base on his recently purchased Danver Island, having a helping hand in their plan to turn Grant City into a deadly Police State by having G.A.C. take over the police department, solely so that he’ll be seen as a hero amongst the populace. Jack even quips that Temple would probably make up a new threat if people tell him to give his power back to them.

Secretly ordering Riggs to kill Redwater after he’ll eventually take over the city with G.A.C., upon being encountered by Jack in his tower near the end, Temple’s revealed to be a sniveling coward under all that bravado who tries to bribe Jack out of killing him; he tells him Redwater’s location, but Jack ends up brutally escorting his whiny ass to jail for interrogation, where he’s basically left behind and forgotten about.

Redeeming Qualities?

While Temple tries to paint himself as trying to do good, to help the people of Grant City by instilling the more brutal G.A.C., Jack points out how he’s not a hero; “Decent people die while you take the glory.”

Add in the fact that the game has such contempt for him that he basically becomes the game’s Chew Toy from the third act onward, and it's made clear that Temple’s claims of altruism fall incredibly flat, a poor excuse to live out his self-deluded power fantasies and increase his ego.

Heinousness?

While Temple’s ultimately a sniveling weasel, the game makes note that every bad thing that’s happened in this game can be traced back to him. Temple’s plan has resulted in tons of innocent casualties, the ruination of several lives, and several attempts at spreading chaos throughout the entire city.

While Redwater's responsible for killing Frank Slate and creating the G.A.C., he genuinely feels that he's helping his city by ruling it through fear and brutal justice, unlike Temple.

Conclusion

I think he keeps

Yes to Temple. I'm guessing Riggs is next?

As for Barbarus, how do his actions compare to other evil dragons in the franchise? Also, Godwyn may have a kingdom, but Barbarus is a freaking dragon, so I'm not sure the resources argument works.

I have a quote proposal for Negaduck in the Darkwing Duck episode "Just Us Justice Ducks Part 2"

  • Negaduck: (Goes over to Gizmoduck strapped to a table with cables in his suit) "This devilish device drains your beloved Gizmo Suit, keeping you weak. But, when I throw THE SWITCH, the energy reversal will fry you!" (...) (Goes over to Neptunia stapped down on the floor with sun lamps over her) "When these nuclear fusion sun lamps are activated by THE SWITCH, we're gonna have ourselves a big ol fish fry!!" (...) (Goes over to Stegmutt, floating in a tube) "Oh not so strong when you're weightless, are you? I hope you can hold your breath a loong time because all the air is gonna be sucked out of this chamber when I throw THE SWITCH!!" (...) (Goes over to Morgana, strapped to a chair with her head between two big vises) "And you my little pretty in the mystical power draining vise, you're gonna have your little pretty squashed FLAT when I throw the switch." (...) "BYE BYE HEROES, MWA HAHAHHAHAHA" (...) (Negaduck is chased to the top of the building running from the Justice Ducks, only to pull out a controller) "DON'T MOVE! If I push this button, the electric walls will collapse and destroy St. Canard! In fact I think I'll just push it anyway!"

- Negaduck attempting to kill the Justice Ducks with torture machines and attempts to destroy St. Canard when he's foiled. Darkwing Duck
