Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sure to the HABIT quote as well

I like the new quote for RWBY.

For the image at Tomb Raider, I removed the caption. It just said "Lord Vymes", and considering the image is called Vymes, well...

Anyone doing those Call of Duty ones that the ban-evader did?

Speaking of, I made some pothole changes to one:

  • 2019 game: In this Continuity Reboot, General Roman Barkov is a delusional soldier willing to go to great lengths to protect his beloved Russia from terrorism. Invading the country of Urzikstan, Barkov takes over the country by unleashing a poisonous gas upon numerous cities, killing countless citizens of all ages. Serving as Urzikstan's new dictator for over twenty years, Barkov oppresses the citizens with his armed soldiers and has potential terrorists executed or imprisoned and tortured, doing the same for women and children. Capturing Farah and Hadir Karim when they were young, Barkov kept them imprisoned and tortured for a decade, only to capture them again and waterboarded for information, even murdering an innocent prisoner in front of Farah. Once Captain Price and his men storm his prison, Barkov tries to burn the prisoners alive to destroy any trace of his brutal war crimes. So.... I got a really weird proposal today, from a Creepypasta.

What's the work?

A lost paramilitary tape from the 1990's has been discovered. Do Not Watch it is the story of Paul O'Shea, an Irish student who is doing research for his history paper regarding the impacts of the Norther Irish troubles. Due to the Covid pandemic, he is restricted to a rented cottage in an isolated area to do his research.

A week later, he goes missing, and the police recover an audio file that details what happened, and that the one responsible for his disappearance to be something far more sinister...

Who is he? What does he do?

O'Shea is given a pair of lost videos regarding the Irish Republican Army by an enigmatic figure named 'Captain Black'. The first video details the aftermath of an IRA attack, and the second is relating to an IRA splinter group that mysteriously vanished in 1990.

The footage features three paramilitary members and a cameraman, who are filming propaganda training video. During the night, the four are patrolling the area and are suddenly ambushed by a beast. The creature attacks the three gunmen, viciously tearing them apart. The cameraman tries to escape but is halted by the beast, which reveals itself as a werewolf. The wolfman stares the cameraman down for a while, seemingly to invoke fear in him, before it kills him as well.

O'Shea dismisses the video as a fake, but is no less disturbed by it, and tries to get back in contact with 'Captain Black', only to find that his account has been mysteriously deleted. The following days, O'Shea is paranoid by the content of the video, and starts to suspect that strange things are happening around his cottage, most notably howling. The next morning, O'Shea finds a pile of flesh torn from several animals at his doorstep. Whatever is lurking in the forest clearly wants him scared....

In order to figure out what's going on, O'Shea begins researching on Irish werewolves, and finds a story of a priest who was traveling at night and encountered the werewolf. The werewolf speaks with the priest, describing how it was once a man who committed heinous crimes against the innocent, and as punishment, was cursed to forever walk the earth and transform into a werewolf once every generation to hunt during the full moon. The beast then attacks the priest who wards it off with his cross and a recital of the Lord's prayer. Continuing his research on this monster, O'Shea finds several stories of it slaughtering livestock, men, women, and children. He begins to notice pattern with the stories as well; they seem to occur once every 30 years, and the most recent incident was the disappearance of the paramilitaries.... which happened 30 years to the day that O'Shea saw that video of that massacre...

O'Shea tires to rationalize all this as some elaborate prank, and when he sees a prowler outside his cottage later that night, he goes outside to confront him. The prowler of course turns out to be the werewolf, who attacks O'Shea. O'Shea manages to get away from it and runs back into the cottage. The werewolf than destroys O'Shea's car, trapping him inside the cottage. It then breaks in, corners and tears him apart.

There is a final paragraph which states that there have been several occasions of 'Captain Black' or whatever name he goes by trying to show the lost paramilitary video to several people, in an attempt to enable them to be killed by the werewolf. The story ends with a warning to not make the same mistake that O'Shea did....

Mitigating Factors

So here's where it gets weird. Whether or not the werewolf makes the cut kind of depends on both it and 'Captain Black' being the same entity. It's not explicitly stated that this is the case, but the implications aren't exactly subtle, and doesn't take a lot of brain power to come to that conclusion.

Moral agency ain't exactly with this one. The werewolf is quite explicitly shown to possess human level intelligence. It knows that O'Shea's car is his last chance of escape destroys it. And if the old tale involving the priest is to be believed, it is perfectly capable of speaking.

Heinousness

The stuff about killing several people, including children, could be considered Offstage Villainy, but is described in very graphic detail in mauling the paramilitaries to death. While the paramilitaries aren't exactly good people, being terrorists and all, it is quite clear that the werewolf doesn't care about who it kills.

But what truly sets it apart from just being a mindless beast is how it chooses to play with its victims before going in for the kill. Staring the cameraman down to make him more afraid as well as the fact that it goes out of its way to terrify O'Shea for a duration of a couple days before ultimately finishing him shows that it is certainly sadistic.

And then of course there's the very strong possibility that the werewolf is 'Captain Black', who sends the footage to of it slaughtering the paramilitaries to unsuspecting people so that it can target them as well.

Final Verdict

Like I said, this is a very weird proposal. I doubt if we can provide examples based on an implication (albeit a very strong one) but I thought that this was an interesting story to bring up that could be a topic for debate.

Gonna abstain to "Captain Black" for now, having read/listened to the story about a year back. At the time I wasn't under the impression he and the werewolf, and I didn't think that's what they were implying. That said, it certainly had enough in the length and proper story department, it isn't a shlock story by any means. I may check it out again to be sure, but I didn't recall the implications they were the same person.

Okay...post-COVID fatigue is fun. Leaning nay to the werewolf, but a solid effort.

One I wanted to do tonight...from the Diablo series. We all know how bad Diablo is, but...well, one of his siblings might be just as nasty. Let's talk...Mephisto.

Who is Mephisto?

Dul'Mephistos is the ultimate leader of Demonkind and the eldest of the Seven Evils when the head of Tathamet shattered. Mephisto was the first of the seven and the eldest of the Prime Evils. Interestingly, in terms of raw power, Mephisto is indicated to be weaker than Baal and especially Diablo (the strongest of Demonkind) but what makes him so deadly is his clever and calculating mind. Mephisto reigns in the Realm of Hatred, a byzantine court of endless plotting, where the denizens scheme against one another. Mephisto was the mentor of the Lesser Evil Belial and commander of Lesser Evil Azmodan, but in the eternal conflict, Mephisto preferred to keep himself out of the realm of visibility, you might say...

Mephisto had two children, Lilith and Lucion. Lilith, as vicious and deceptive as her kin, went behind her father's back to swipe the Worldstone of creation with her angel lover Inarius. The brothers found a world called Sanctuary, populated by half-demon, half-angel beings. Humans. Mephisto was the one who created a temple called the Triune, ostensibly to worship spirits of Love, Creation and Courage...in truth, it was a front for demon worship, led by his son Lucion, which sowed murder, sacrifice and worse to corrupt humanity so Mephisto could crush heaven eventually with the power of the Nephilim.

The resulting conflict, the Sin War, ended with Lilith defeated and banished beyond time, Lucion killed and the angels deciding to spare Sanctuary. Mephisto handled negotiations, but demanded Inarius as payment for the treaty, offended by the angel's presumptions against him. Inarius was bound, tortured horribly and locked in eternal suffering, in a hideous form, in a chamber of mirrors to never escape the horrors of his own visage.

Mephisto proceeded to absolutely break the spirit of the treaty and corrupt humans with Diablo. During the Dark Exile, Belial and Azmodan rallied the other Lesser Evils and banished Mephisto and brothers...just as planned. Mephisto and Diablo's plot was simple: to let humanity contain them and corrupt the fuck out of them,

MANY innocent lives died to contain Mephisto and his Soulstone given to the church of Zakarum, a holy order...Mephisto, with nothing better to do, slowly corrupted them over the years. He turned them to corruption, murder, sacrifice and other depravities. The head of the church resisted him, so Mephisto had him dismembered...sending Archbishop Lazarus over to Tristram to free Diablo. The new hea of the council became Mephisto's new host.

Mephisto takes up leadership and announces his plan with a great quote: ""The skies shall rain fire, and the seas will become as blood. The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!"

Before sending Diablo to hell with an order: harness the forces of hell and bring them back into the fold, before they could invade Sanctuary and destroy the High Heavens.

His Soulstone destroyed, Mephisto's soul was banished, until it was contained in the Black Soulstone, by the machinations of the evil witch Adria...later imprisoned in a revived Diablo, the final events of Diablo 3 see the Evils separated from Diablo...

But free once again.

Mitigating issues?

Okay, so we've long established demons and angels in Diablo have agency. They can change their natures, with one angel becoming evil, other demons under Lilith becoming good (at least neutral), and one angel becoming human of his own volition. SO, the main issue is heinousness. While he's the weakest of the Prime Evils, it's notable all their plotting (except for Diablo's secret gambit to usurp his brothers in Diablo III) is Mephisto's doing. Mephisto masterminds the fall of the Zakarum, costs countless innocent lives, handles the founding of the Triune and constantly tries for the mass overthrow of humanity, so see all humankind massacred or corrupted by demons. Mephisto's only real competition is Diablo himself, which is an admittedly very high bar. Nonetheless, I think Mephisto clears it. His levels of hatred are off the charts.

It's also mentioned Mephisto has a tendency to...not exactly value his brothers. He was only too happy to use them in his manipulations and play them against one another as well. The only member of the Primes who actually seems to love the others is honestly Baal. Mephisto isn't eve really bothered by the loss of his own kids at the end of the Sin War.

Conclusion?

Giving Mephisto a solid yes.

I don't know the series too well, but if he does the planning, he seems...worse almost than Big D {heh) himself?
