Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So, my next...

What's the Work?

The Vineyard is a film co-directed by and starring James Hong as famed Winemaker Elison Po...in truth, Po is a dark sorcerer with blackened rites to his name, subsisting on a magic amulet with a dark secret to his wine...

Who is Elison Po?

Po was born the son of a beautiful sorceress, a celestial being who passed on her secrets to him as a child...when she was threatened, Po seized the amulet from her and learned to cultivate eternal life: via the gods of the Mayans, whom he uses dark magic to invoke...the problem is Po's life is running out, so he has women abducted and taken to be slowly and painfully bled so he can use the wine in said rituals, for his own longevity...

When the film begins, his wife/girlfriend Tina is having a liaison with him, though she's actually screwing the handyman around his compound...Po also has his victims taken and turned into withered, decaying zombies enslaved to his will once he sucks out their life force and souls...upon rejuvenating a bit, he forces Tina to watch her lover's horrific death and has her dragged down to be slowly bled with the rest of his victims.

Po welcomes a group of journalists to his manor, cheerfully promising to show them the secrets...using them as fodder for his magic. Did I mention his dungeon is full of luckless souls he's bleeding dry and he has tons and tons of wine barrels to prove it?

Po proceeds to steadily murder members of the group, torturing many of them with voodoo-like powers, while he decides to seduce one of the group, a pure-hearted woman, into marriage...revealing to one wizened old slave that he will sacrifice her and empower himself with her pure blood and never need the amulet again....

The wizened slave? Is Po's own mother, whom he's kept as a tortured lackey for ages, since stealing her amulet....the heroes manage to get loose though, stripping Po of immortality and stopping the ceremony. Po is attacked by his own zombies and given the fate he richly deserves, his mother saved and ascending to heaven...

and Po is finally seen as a shambling, agonized zombie himself, shrieking for the return of his amulet...

Mitigating issues?

TBH, I was kinda stunned Po was this bad. He has tons of people tortured and killed to make his wine. I mean we see a bunch and every cask of wine he has is evidence of it, as he makes explicitly clear what he does and how. He kills numerous other people, has some nasty soul-dickery with his victims and...

At first I was worried over the flashback of Po calling for his mother...only for him to smirk and then next we see the poor woman is revealed to be a tormented slave he lavishes abuse and contempt on. Hell no, no good qualities.

Conclusion?

A very easy keeper.

[tup] to Carnage, but I'm gonna abstain on Phobos. I didn't play the games so correct me if I'm wrong, but at the end of the game, doesn't Hank also try to destroy the world after pulling a Face–Heel Turn? That kinda means Phobos isn't the only Omnicidal Maniac in the games.

EDIT: Wait, I re-read the proposal, changing to a [tup] for Phobos.

I have a concern about a currently listed CM, the Menace from Goosebumps HorrorLand. Here is his entry:

Escape from Horrorland & The Streets of Panic Park: The Menace, real name Karloff Mennis, is the psychotic owner of Panic Park, the precursor to HorrorLand that was so scary, it somehow ended up in an alternate universe. The Menace conducted experiments involving fear that involved using his own park as a testing ground. People would die or be traumatized riding on the attractions that either contained poor design or were just dangerous by nature. Later, he found out that HorrorLand was made on the spot that his park once stood, so he got contact with a Horror—park employees who were real monsters—to manipulate the protagonists to escape from HorrorLand into Panic Park. Once there, the Menace subjects the kids to horrific situations that not only scare them, but leave them mentally and physically changed. It's revealed that he's done this before, but the previous kids had died and he simply doesn't care. The other villains that were following him - even Slappy—forged an Enemy Mine with the kids because they realized the Menace would kill them all eventually.

On Fandom wiki I had a conversation with a random user who told me that he doesn't think that the Menace belongs to this trope because he cares about his second face and when the children melt it with their laughter, the Menace screams:

Look what you've done! He was my only friend! You'll pay! You'll all pay!

Also, apparently his second face is portrayed as a separate entity because throughout the story it scolds Menace for his actions and the two of them constantly argue with one another.

I don't know anything about Goosebumps, so I can't confirm if this info is true or not (as I said, I learnt it from a random user on Fandom Wiki) but is there someone here who has read the book and can confirm or disprove this claim?

That's almost word-for-word the quote that got Blight slashed. Based on that, I'd cut the Menace. And yes to Po.
