Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Not helping is that Kurt literally has like one scene at the end of the episode where he gets arrested and all his lines amount to "I did nothing, I'm an editor!" lol, he counts easily due to crimes but he's a one-shot who has literal seconds of screentime. In this very dark series, I'm not surprised we totally missed it haha great work on that one!

That is interesting to think about we as a thread only get to see the characters who do qualify as a CM so characters that seem like easy keepers aren't as easy when you actually know the media.

Is anyone here familiar with the game Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines? I was considering EP-ing the minor character Stanley Gimble.

Here's one I'm less sure of than normal but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

Background

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is a cool game where you play as a vampire. Early on in the game as part of a side-quest, you can come across a bondsman named Arthur Kilpatrick who asks you to find his missing bounty hunter, a man named Carson who had disappeared while looking for another man named McGee.

McGee, it turns out, had been hiding at a local tattoo parlor, and Carson had tracked him there before he disappeared. The player visits the tattoo parlor and finds that McGee had been in contact with a prosthetist named Stanley Gimble for some small-time modeling work.

Who is he? What does he do?

Stanley Gimble is a prosthetist who agrees to answer the player character's questions at his office. Talking with him, it quickly becomes clear that he's off his rocker, as he describes having a "love affair" with the human body and how he had cut off his own arm to "better understand how someone feels with a prosthetic limb". Through his dialogue he appears to have some sort of fetish for limbs. He claims to not know where McGee is and goes to his back room to look through his files. When the player character follows him, they find a dungeon with a number of bloody rooms and various cutting implements, along with what looks like a decomposing body on a mattress. They find Carson still alive in a cell, who tells them that Gimble had been cutting pieces off of him and McGee for several days. McGee had succumbed to his injuries after having all four of his limbs amputated. Gimble then appears and tries to kill the player, attacking them with a severed arm.

Redeeming or mitigating factors?

None.

Does he pass the heinous standard?

Here's the problem; it's not really possible to know how many victims he had or planned to have in the future. While there are a few bloody areas in his underground dungeon, it is possible that he had only tried to kill Carson, McGee and the decaying corpse, and the arm he uses to attack could possibly have belonged to McGee. He had apparently put out fliers asking for people to come and model for him, so his victims would have been anyone who responded to the fliers. As for resources, Gimble is a normal human in a game filled with powerful vampires.

Conclusion

Gimble stuck out to me but I have reservations based on what I said earlier.

Sadly I'm a no. World of Darkness is dark. Very, very dark. Even taking Bloodlines on its own, I don't think Gimble passes muster.

[tup] to HWWBtR, the Rancor monster, and Kurt.

[tdown] to Gimble

Hey guys, so just finished checking out Darwin's Game and got a candidate to discuss, so lets talk about it.

What’s The Work?

Darwin’s Game is a Japanese manga series that gets adapted to an anime in 2020. The premise is that a high school sophomore, Kaname Sudō, accepts an online invitation by a friend to play an app game called Darwin's Game, which unbeknownst to him it involves a fight between life and death.

Those who play the game are given a Sigil, an ability that varies from player to player. Trapped in this game of relentless murder and conquest, Kaname is determined to clear the game and among the enemies that he has faced in the game, none are as cruel nor sadistic as this guy, Wang.

Who Is He What? Has He Done?

Wang is one of the people whose playing Darwin’s Game and is leader of the Eight, the most vicious clan in the game committing wanton murder and other atrocities throughout the game with Wang being introduced massacring an entire yakuza gang before torturing the Sole Survivor, cutting off his fingers, and beheading him, where Wang would then put the decapitated fingers in a jar of pickle juice and force his men to drink it.

Wang would continue to torture kill countless more people whether they be playing the game or not just to fuel his sadism. Among is victims include Ryuji’s kid brother whom Wang tortured to death, a high school girl whom Wang threw off a building when she tried killing him and an innocent man by blowing him up to test out a new grenade he got.

During a treasure Wang has murdered at least 32 people before collecting their rings where he would have his men storm the Shibuya Tower to kill anyone still there and collect there rings. Among the victims there includes Hiragi Ishiro "The Florist”, which leading to the tower getting destroyed while killing much of Wang’s men, much to Wang’s indifference because he sent them there to die anyway as punishment for not helping him in the treasure hunt, while he and the rest of his men go to the Shibuya station to find the real treasure.

When Wang notices the Information Broker of Darwin's Game and middle schooler, Rein Kashiwagi, Wang holds her hostage and breaks her arm while threatening to cut off her fingers one by one before cutting off her ears and her tongue unless she tells him where the real treasure is.

However Rein is rescued by Ryuji Maesaka whom Wang captures before cutting off his arm with plans to cut off all his fingers to put in his pickle finger cocktail drink, and torture him to death, while mocking about how he killed Ryuji’s little brother. Luckily Kaname Sudou arrives and stalls Wang and his gang long enough to rescue Ryuji while finding the treasure before they could.

Not taking the loss well, Wang orders his men to kill Kaname and Ryuji but was teleported out before they could do so where, Wang does the next best thing and kidnap Kaname’s best friend, Shinozuka Youta, where cutting off all his fingers and send them to Kaname along with a video of him torturing Youta.

Kaname would send a SWAT to rescue Shinozuka, only for Wang to have them all slaughter and killed, where Kaname and his clan would try to rescue Shinozuka themselves. Sadly it was too late to save Shinozuka as Wang had already killed the poor guy and chopped him up to bits before presenting the mutilated remains to Kaname.

When Kaname goes into Tranquil Fury, Wang runs away leaving his men to die, where Wong threatens to slice Kaname and his clan into ribbons. However Wang would be faced by Shuka Karino who chop Wang’s limbs off one by one before letting Kaname kill Wang. When Wang’s attempts to beg for his life fail,Wang decides to mock Kaname that other people will hunt and kill him before Kaname finally puts a bullet, killing the bastard.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Like everyone else Wang gets sucked into Darwin’s Game after pressing the app. However Wang isn’t an unfortunate victim like many others, but instead enjoys playing the game taking extreme pleasure in torturing and killing countless people while being viewed as a king by his gang.

While Wang claims to be the main character of the game, that’s only because he’s been killing people and winning so many times that it just feeds ego, so when he looses for the first time and is about to die he’s shocked and scared, but he’s fully aware that all the atrocities that he committed are evil and takes joy at the fact while having no well-intentioned goals whatsoever.

He does use charisma to recruit people into joining his gang and following him, but has no care or concerns for any of them willing to use them as disposable fodder to attack the Shibuya Tower because they didn't participate in the Treasure Hunt event which led to their deaths and later abandons his men to die at Kaname’s hands. Plus he forced his gang to drink from a jar filled with people’s fingers. So yeah, this guy has zero excuses, nor redeemable qualities and justifications for all the thing’s he has done.

Heinousness

This game feature many people who are willing to kill people include a guy in a panda bear costume, but Wang stands out amongst all of them as being the most vicious and sadistic along with having really horrific methods of torture and murder along the highest body of anyone playing the game so far, having kill many people, including innocent people like children in horrific fashions.

Really only meeting Wang in terms of this are whoever created Darwin’s Game, but he still a Hidden Agenda Villain whose goals haven’t been fully revealed yet, whether they are justifiable or not. There might be one or two killers that may be considered later on but for the moment, Wang really stands out with his horrific MOs and high body count.

Final Verdict

I’ll leave it up to you guys to decide.

Yes to Kurt.

Here's my second Ghost Rider baddie—Tsin Hark from issues #138—#142 of Marvel Comics Presents.

What has Tsin Hark done?

Tsin Hark is a vile Chinese sorcerer who wants to scorch away the age of science from the Earth to bring back the age of tradition and magic and horrible, sadistic blood sacrifice back to the Earth.

Ghost Rider teams up with a minor superhero team called the Masters of Silence to track Tsin Hark. It's not hard to find him; Tsin Hark has kidnapped countless hundreds of innocent—and he gloats as much, since "innocent blood is so precious!"—Chinese immigrants and murdered them, exsanguinating them to fill iron drums full of their blood. Tsin Hark has huge, huge stacks of these iron drums and a veritable army of dead immigrants he's transformed into vampiric gynosii that he unleashes on Ghost Rider and the Masters.

Tsin Hark willingly relinquishes his humanity to whatever dark force he's dealing with, but Ghost Rider cuts him and some of his blood falls into the pool of innocent blood he's using to power himeslf. Tsin Hark's pure evil blood is rejected by the pool and the ritual backfires, vaporizing Tsin Hark.

Any mitigating factors?

Yeah, no. It's sorta hilarious that "murdering hundreds of innocent immigrants for blood sacrifice" is somewhat of the lower end of the Ghost Rider foes we've fought, but shit, for a one-off serial killer, Tsin Hark has an unusually meaty body count. I wouldn't put him up if his operation capped a few-dozen bodies or so, but Tsin Hark's victim count is explicitly emphasized to be in the triple-digits. He's punching out of his tier and Ghost Rider treats him like pure scum.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Ordeaux, I think that Ghost Rider page can be created now. Tsin Hark makes 9 (10 if you count both [lol]) from Earth-616 alone; Scraggle, I assume more will be coming?

On that note, should Mephisto be moved to Ghost Rider, or is he overarching enough to stay on the main Marvel page?
