Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Trope misuse and Zero-Context Examples aren't the same thing. Misuse is when a trope is being used incorrectly and ZCE is when the example doesn't have enough context to illustrate the trope. In the case of the latter, the entry's validity cannot be gauged because there's simply not enough information provided to tell if fits under the trope or not.

Let's start with ZCE's first. I'd like you to try your hand at adding more context to these entries you wrote below. Please read the descriptions of each trope carefully so that you will know the specific trope components you need to include in your writeup. Feel free to use Zero-Context Example as a guide.

~Tropers/troperaiser Appeal

No, you haven't. In your first attempt at interacting with the IP forum, you complained about the rules. We would like to see be productive on the forum by contributing to IP discussions. However, it is important that you read the pinned OPs in stickied general thread so you will have a better feel for the rules.

~Deacon 911 Appeal

It's good that you have taken responsibility for your actions, I don't think ban evading multiple times and only deciding to use the contact form to start over is a good look. You should have reached out to us before you tried to ban evade but as you have said, you thought you were above the rules at the time.

You have multiple thumps between your H Barnill account and this one for inflammatory and often off topic posts. All of your thumps on Deacon 911 came after you logged into the account after you deleted your H Barnill account (after it was bounced after you attempted to ban evade from another account) A few years back, you were banned from multiple areas of the site for these issues. Thus, we have decided to suspend you from the forums indefinitely. However, you will be free to participate in other areas of the site. We won't tolerate anymore slip ups from you regarding the cited issues again. If another incident occurs, you will be bounced and we will not be answering any of your appeals to the contact form. Is that clear?

Also, the two messages you have received is from a welcome auto PM from the FAQs subforum and an accidental ping I sent while drafting out ban appeals. This ping I'm sending to you right now is just to let you know that we have responded to you. PM banned users not being able to view their inbox is a known issue.

~Ano Baka Desu Appeal

After reviewing your case, we have decided to release your forum ban while keeping you indefinitely suspended from editing the wiki. We expect you to spend more time on the project threads for several months so that we'll be able to gauge how you interact with others. Once you have done that and some time has passed, you can come back here to re-appeal your editing suspension. Any further instances of rudeness will not be tolerated and this will be your last chance.

Here's an indentation exercise. Please fix these examples. Feel free to use Example Indentation in Trope Lists as a resource.

  • Genki Girl: She's loud, hyperactive, and admits she can't stay silent for more than three minutes. This shows especially in her 3D videos where she's constantly bouncing around. She has so much energy that Coco, Kanata and Towa were intimidated by it and could barely talk to her at first.
    • She's often been compared to the sun due to her radiating energy and limitless positivity. Fittingly, her first original song was named "Taiyou Shoujo" (lit. "Sunshine Girl").

Entries for Hard Head

  • Subverted in Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain novel Duty Calls. Cain suffers a realistic head injury, putting him out for three days and inspiring nausea and dizziness. Cain plays it up or down as suits him, causing other characters to remind him that such an injury is serious.
    • Played half straight in For the Emperor, where Jurgen takes a glancing hit to the head. His carapace armor helmet helps protect him, particularly since the bolter round detonates prematurely (it's supposed to penetrate flesh and then go off; detonating on the wrong side of armor robs it of half its force). On the other hand, most headshots with bolters are fatal regardless of armor, so clearly he was naturally tough as well as armored.
      • This receives a Call-Forward in Death or Glory, where Jurgen is tossed about in a crash-landing escape pod and suffers a minor bruise as a result. Cain mentions wryly that Jurgen's head is probably too thick to be cracked by anything short of a bolter round.
    • In William King's Warhammer 40,000 novel Space Wolf, when Ragnor considers that injuries can be more severe than they look, he remembers stories of men who suffered a light blow to the head, fought through a battle — and dropped dead.

~MacronNotes I accept and understand my limits. Thank you for granting me a second chance. You were right that I didn't do the right thing by contacting this board first but, not to defend myself, I forgot to use this place. As much as I would love to use the forums, I get why I can't use them. I don't try to be controversial there. At times, I just forget to proofread. I just wanna get my thoughts out fast. I got several warnings but I was too thoughtless.

I would love to get another crack at the forums but I don't want to push this chance. Maybe someday, I can get that privilege but maybe not. Regardless, thank you so much. I won't waste this.

  • Family Guy:
    • In one episode, the Griffins wind up trapped in a secret safe room with the sprinkler system going off, resulting in the room slowly filling with water.
    • There was also the infamous "Brian and Stewie", which was an entire episode dedicated to Brian and Stewie being locked in a bank vault.

  • Sealab 2021:
    • Inverted in the episode "In The Closet": sure, Murphy, Sparks, Debbie, Marco, and Quinn are trapped in a closet that's got a broken lock, but at least they're not in Sealab itself, which is being overrun by ravenous Guatemalan fighting dogs that Murphy hadn't fed in ten days. Guess what happens to Stormy.
    • The episode "Cavemen" leaves Quinn and Stormy in a Catch-22. They're trapped in an underwater cave with no way to call for help. If they leave, a shark will kill them. If they stay, they'll run out of oxygen and die anyway. They choose to go out via oxygen deprivation.

  • Rigby from Regular Show tried to prevent this with common sense to prop the door open before leaving the lockable door. It failed still because he tried to prop the door open with a couple of bags of ice. A Surprisingly Realistic Outcome occurs when Rigby points out there's a safety latch...and proceeds to break it by pulling it too hard, trapping them inside.

@Synchronicity well, agree to disagree then. the people raising this much of a fuss over a fictional character instead of... well, actually oppressed people in the LGBTQ community kind of just gives me the same slacktivism red flags as the Hogwarts Legacy boycott (thankfully not to their level of unhinged).

is it really too much to ask to help real life LGBTQ folk, if that's truly what they believe in, instead of a fictional character that'll inevitably get warped by their creators and fanartists somewhere down the line?

it was meant to be a "you could do better as a person" sort of question, but i'm hardly surprised it turned out this way, what with the state of most supposed human rights movements nowadays, at least here in America. if that's hardly believable to people around here, then that's fine, and it's probably for the best for all of us if i stay forum banned. i don't miss out on much staying that way aside from accidentally offending more people in the future.

@Synchronicity oh my god, this is totally my fault. I reverted the edit because the guy gave a bogus reason for deleting it(along the lines of "he didn't like the new HOI4 focuses, so therefore no one else is allowed to add an audience reaction talking about how they've improved over time"). I actually DID resolve the issue with the guy in a series of PMs where I eloquently explained my point and he eventually relented. I should have done that before reverting the edit or the whole purpose of the private messages were lost. Huge mistake on my part, I will remember to take it to PMs before reverting the edit if it ever happens again.

Hello! I recently noticed that I have been suspended after attempting to edit and contribute to a page. I would like to appeal this suspension and better understand the reason for it so that I may learn how to do better in the future.

I have not been given a reason for my suspension, but I think it may have been due to my actions on a certain character page: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Characters.TheDisastrousLifeOfSaikiK#edit36096502

In this edit, I restored examples of a trope that I added to the page long ago, believing it applied well to the series. In hindsight, my edit reason is a bit long-winded and could be perceived as rude or hostile (especially the use of caps and quotations, which I intended to use as emphasizing important points). Also, by restoring my own edit after it was removed, I qualify for inciting an Edit War (especially because I also did not PM the other user or use the discussion page before restoring my edit). If this is the case, I apologize, for my intent was to be as thorough as possible in my reasoning, and not to offend or insult the user that had initially removed my contribution. I also apologize for sparking a potential Edit War regardless of my intentions. I am willing to let this specific issue go and have my edit re-removed without further contention.

Other than this, I am not sure of other possible reasons for my suspensions, at least from recent actions, since before then I hadn't made edits in a while, and only sporadically. Either way, I love using this website and occasionally contributing what little to it I do, and hope to be allowed to continue doing so after learning from my mistake, whatever it may be.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Requirements to launch a draft: I must at least wait three days before launching. It should have a clear and complete description. It should have five more hats than bombs, so it doesn't get shot down. The draft should have ten examples and twelve pages to link back to before it's launched. Complete discussion on the draft to prevent unaddressed issues. You are required to give a 24-hour notice before launching, giving other tropers a chance to make last minute suggestions. If I see a trope no one is managing, but should be launched, I should call attention to it and check if anyone is still working on it. I should discuss it with the people involved to see if it's ready for launch.

Eating Contest:

  • The Popeye cartoon Duel To the Finish had Popeye challenge Wimpy to a duel (Olive was trying to make Popeye jealous) and Wimpy chooses an eating contest, which he wins easily. But Wimpy conceded to Popeye when Olive said she couldn't cook another thing.

What happened to the other example that was attached to this entry? That was a separate example so you could have indented it correctly. Please try fixing it again.

On Three:
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
    • It's a Running Gag that King Arthur can't say the word "three", substituting "five" for it until corrected by one of his subordinates. When it comes time to toss the Holy Hand Grenade, he miscounts again. Fortunately, the grenade didn't go off until it was thrown next to the desired target.
    • The instructions for the Holy Hand Grenade turn this into an Overly Long Gag, making it even funnier when Arthur immediately flubs it:
First shalt thou take out the holy pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three is the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, except that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out! Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade toward thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

This is correctly indented. When there are multiple examples of a work, all of the entries go under ** bullets.

Hollywood Fire:
  • Perhaps the most egregious example in World of Warcraft is the city of Stratholme, which has been on fire for more than half a decade. Despite this, people entering the streets of this inferno don't even face a penalty from the burning environment. In Culling of Stratholme, Arthas comments that the fire is just as dangerous to your party as the undead. Except it still isn't.

Since both incorrectly indented entries were discussing the same example, combining both points into one entry was a good call.

~Tropers/cryptic-immortal Appeal https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eb20230305.png

The circled entries are the lone bullet points. Entries should never look like single lines hanging off the previous line. Review the explanation and examples in Example Indentation in Trope Lists and try again.

~Tropers/darkdill Appeal You were not suspended because your entry was premature, no, but because by adding the entry back without discussion, you've entered Edit War territory. We're really strict about our policy and acknowledge that it looks a tad unfair to get in trouble over this—the example getting added back with no changes mere hours after the kit's release affected the decision as well. According to the page, what are some avenues to avoid an edit war?
~Fernandez 0907 Appeal That's just another term for a page discussion page. Once again, please give other discussion venues. If you have read the Edit War page (like you were told to earlier), you should be able to give us something other than discussion pages.
Tropers/gabrote42 Appeal

Since you have only posted once on the Get Help with English thread, we would like you try to get a couple of consecutive posts through the thread that don't need any corrections.

In the meantime, we still have to go through Zero-Context Example policy with you. So, if you'll like to do that now we can.

~RAMChYLD Appeal

Those examples are all properly indented and natter free. I'll release your suspension.

~Here Comes The Metric System Appeal Well, you are appealing your suspension now by posting on this thread. Can we trust that you will bring edits you would like to question up for discussion? If we release you and you end up suspended for edit warring again, it is unlikely that you will get another chance to edit the wiki again.
~Tropers/dvx105 Appeal

Hello, dvx105. Welcome to the Edit Banned thread. Indeed, you were suspended for reverting The Transformers (IDW) to IDW Publishing. Once an Edit War occurs, it's a suspendable offense, so we don't notify users beforehand. You said using the discussion page to propose a change is one way to avoid committing an edit war. Let's say it doesn't work — there are no participants on the discussion page. What are some other avenues for discussion?

And yes, linking to the work takes precedence over the creator page. You may do both, but in this case, pointing to both the comic and the publisher seems redundant.

~Tropers/Grotadmorv Appeal

Putting the entry back wholesale without discussion means you've Edit Warred. Since this isn't your first time on Edit Banned for edit warring, we should be clear on what the policy is about. It doesn't matter whether the writeup makes sense or was "correct" or not, because everyone thinks their edits are correct. Note on the page that edit reasons are no substitute for discussion because you are still putting the same thing back. What are some ways you could have avoided edit warring?

~Dr OO 7 Those examples look good now. Remember that multiple entries for the same work all go under the same line of indentation (usually the second level). Do you have questions or concerns regarding Example Indentation in Trope Lists?
~Freecom Appeal Your defense is not convincing as the derail you started on the Fighting Games thread had nothing to do with the rights of real LGBTQ people. We are fine with keeping you forum banned but as a reminder that a repeat of the behavior that led to your thumped posts will not be tolerated anywhere on the wiki.
~Reginald Ogron 5 P Ms are one way to prevent editing conflicts but there are others. Can you give other discussion venues you can use to prevent Edit Wars?
~Tropers/Vorpoler Appeal

Yes, you have been suspended for edit warring on that page. Also, you are correct that you should have contacted the other user instead of just adding back the entry. You can also go to Ask The Tropers to get feed back on contested edits. I'll release your suspension.

~Kyogre 70 Appeal That's correct. I'll release your suspension.
~Dvaderstarlord 5 Appeal The discussion page is one way to prevent an edit war however they tend to be inactive. Can you us give other ways you can discuss contested edits?
~D Howdah 2007 Rudely demanding us to un-suspend will get you nowhere.

You have been suspended for the following

  • Continuing to leave rude all caps edit reasons on the wiki despite prior rudeness notifiers.
  • 6 indentation notifiers (most of which were sent between this year and the last)
