This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

@Synchronicity Oh. I misread that as me being asked to correct it in the article itself after being un-suspended. Well, how about:

  • Convection, Schmonvection: Sonic gets dropped into a volcano and is rescued by Tails only inches away from the lava, neither of them sufferring any burns.
  • Damsel in Distress: Amy gets captured by Robotnik and is used as bait to lure Sonic into a trap.
  • Disney Death: Sonic, Amy, and Alucion fall into a volcano and are taken for dead, leading to a sorrowful Tails swearing revenge on Robotnik. Fortunately we later learn that there was a giant ring within the volcano that teleported them to a Special Stage.

~Synchonicity: Ouch. Coming from a Grammar Nazi such as myself, I'm embarrassed to have made those mistakes.

* Playing Against Type: He's generally known for playing villains (often those that fall into The Sociopath, or are at least ruthless), but he has occasionally voiced exceptions to this standard. One such exception is Kenichi Natsuki since he's shown to be on good terms with his wife and Subaru. The latter is subjected to a Secret Test of Character where illusions of his parents appear based on his memories of them, they all decide to share peas during a meal. There's even a scene where Kenichi gives Subaru a Cooldown Hug when the latter is showing his self-doubt in front of him.

Admittedly, I have very little knowledge of Senpai since I haven't seen The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, and the wiki page doesn't have much information. I can't do that one.

* Typecasting: He tends to voice villains the most, with some of his most famous roles being the malevolent crime lords Diavolo and Overhaul. It's gotten to the point where he wished to voice more good guys. He finally got his wish by playing Kenichi Natsuki in the second season of Re Zero.

~Fighteer, oh that? Nay, it's not that big a deal to me. I just wanted to point out that it takes the enjoyment out of things to make things political, but I suppose that in itself is a political statement. I've been editing on the site for over a decade now. I'll make sure to avoid those kind of edits from now on.

[up][up] Please don't chain-post. We will get to you soon enough.

[up] Please don't talk to each other in this thread.

~Perfect Princess Girl — Your suspension, back in February, is for severe grammar issues as well as misuse of formatting, improper Example Indentation, and Word Cruft.

We don't just let you go after a certain time, which you would know if you'd read any of our rules. You have to show that you understand the problems and can fix them. For grammar in particular, we can't trust you to correct it on your own. You will need to spend some time in the Help with English thread getting your edits proofread before you can have your suspension released.

~Thecommander236 — You might be surprised how many long-time editors abruptly turn out to be raging bigots. We just had to bounce one the other day, in fact. I'm glad to hear that you are taking this matter more seriously. I'm sorry if it inconveniences you that works have social messages, but we don't need to know that.

What you added was also Natter: a personal comment tacked onto an existing example. It doesn't matter that you kept it in the same bullet point; it has no place in the wiki, which is not a forum. The forums are here if you want to chat with people.

Is all of this clear?

So I have recently gotten suspended from editing, in what as far as I know is my first time having gotten this.

Reading through my messages, I see this as having one of two major causes:

  • My recent Death Note edits in the Villainous Breakdown quotes, or
  • The failure to remove the apostrophe from the title of the Devil's Advocate Gambit TLP.

If it was either of those things, I apologize for this and will take steps to correct this as soon as I can.

If something else is the cause, then I wish to know what so that I can correct this.

EDIT: So I just went through Ask The Tropers, and it turns out that this is related to the Death Note thing in Villainous Breakdown's quotes page; in particular a combination of Edit War and Sinkhole regarding Ryuk's final quote in a certain passage from the second to final chapter of the manga.

~Thecommander236 — Alright, you're good to go.

~karim97 — Before we can remove your suspension, we have to make sure you understand what rules you broke.

Let me be very clear: what other sites say about tropes like Complete Monster, Faux Affably Evil, and so on, is completely irrelevant to how TV Tropes treats them. Using those sites as justifications for anything you do here is considered vandalism and drama importation.

You have a choice to make: follow our rules or their rules. And please carry this message back because we are sick of getting raided by whiny babies.

Hello, I have just learned I have been suspended from editing. I'm unsure why this is; I was suspended many months ago because of indenting issues and as far as I know I haven't made indenting mistakes again; I've gone to the effort of fixing ones I come across. I'm unaware if I've violated any other rules. I apologise if I have, it wasn't my intention. It's frustrating as I've been trying to avoid violating any rules regarding formatting and such since the earlier suspension. I'm more than happy to comply with whatever the mods recommend to be able to edit again.

/*************BEGIN QUOTE******************/ ~Tropers/LIES OK, let's look at this edit of yours from The Mikado :

Inherently Funny Words: Just about all of the names, of course. That's part of their purpose. "I drew my snickersnee..." (a real word dating back to at least 1775, meaning a long knife used as a weapon) Titipu. (Heh Heh....) [MY EDIT BEGINS] Due to the vagaries of dialect and orthography, this is likely derived from the name of the town in Saitama more often rendered as 'Chichibu'. (your edit) Ignoring the fact that the entry its attached to is a Zero-Context Example, this edit is natter because it's commenting on another entry. Also, bullets are for examples, not commentary or feedback. If an entry is lacking something, you should feel free to edit in more information as long it's relevant. Does this make sense?

/*************END QUOTE********************/

Yes, this makes sense, with one question below at the end:

I see that I should have not made this a bullet-point. By analogy with the previous state, in which there was an explanation that 'snickersnee' was an actual word and an explanation of what it meant, I wanted to note that 'Titipu' was a real place-name, and explain the names by which it were more likely known now—but I should have added that to the end of the bullet-point, not subbed it. Would that still be Nattering, though?

What I don't understand: if I see a problem on the order of an entry constituting a Zero Context Example, am I obligated to fix that before adding to it?

Thank-you.

Hello I’d like to learn why I’ve been suspended and I’d like to edit again. There’s a message in my account that could possibly contain the reason as to why I am suspended but I can’t access it because I’m suspended. Whatever i did, I’ll promise to be better and do my best to avoid repeating the same mistake next time.

Sorry for posting again but I think I may have identified the issue. A week or so back I added an Oh, Crap! entry to a character's folder (it was on House of the Dragon's character page). Another troper removed it because they thought it wasn't a character trope. I re-added it and politely explained why in the edit reason, while also expressing some confusion over its removal. I explained I wasn't sure why it got removed because I'm pretty sure Oh, Crap! is a character trope; I mentioned that the trope article mentions it's an individual character's reaction, it's on the Character Reaction Index and I've seen it on many character pages. It got left up after that.

However, it has occurred to me this could've been interpreted as Edit Warring, which was not my intention. Based on my understanding of the Edit War article, I was under the impression it was two or more people continously adding and removing things based on subjective opinion. I thought this one fell under merely correcting a mistake (as in, it was mistakenly believed to not be a character trope). Sort of like how some people add non-YMMV items to YMMV and so forth.

Another potential issue from around the same time is that I added a character folder which got removed because a troper didn't see the character (and another character folder above it which I didn't add) as being significant enough to warrant a folder. I just left that alone, thinking some of their points were reasonable, although I see that another troper has since re-added them. I didn't re-add that one, someone else did.

I apologise if this constituted as Edit Warring. I don't come here to argue and I didn't want to offend anyone, I genuinely thought I was just correcting an honest mistake. I never usually contest if entries I add get removed, even if I privately disagree. I approached this one more like a formatting or wrong page placement issue, though I can understand if it was considered the start of an Edit War. For what it's worth, I wouldn't have re-added it had it been removed again.

Did I get suspended cause I was editing multiple times per day ? If so, I promise to attempt to reduce it to maximum once or twice per day if my suspension gets lifted. I was also had some grammar issues, but for the most part I think I fixed them ( tho they did require multiple edits ... so I promise to be more careful with my grammar in my first edits ).

Hello, I was somehow suspended from editing on certain (or rather, all) pages, especially those that I have created myself (which is to say not much, but I do update those ages on occasions). I may have a general grasp of what I may have done wrong (such as arguing with another troper who has made some correct arguments (notably on my grammar and syntax)). Can I at least appeal for this suspension, and if so when can the appeal take effect?

This afternoon, I discovered that I am suspended from making any edits.

My last suspension was due to my grammar and editing. Has my grammar declined in quality again? Or is there another issue with my editing that I must address?

This post is an appeal over my second suspension. Please let me know what I can do to resolve the issue and regain the ability to make edits. If I have angered the mods, I will do what I can to make amends.

~President Brit ~Tropers/Dere ~Tropers/227someguy — OK, I'll lift your suspensions. Please be conscientious about the issues that got you suspended in the future.

~Tropers/Dravencour — Correct. Let's discuss the Edit War first.

~Tropers/Stevebob your suspension is also for edit warring on Uncertain Audience, though that edit you describe on Characters.House Of The Dragon is also an Edit War.

So I'll just write this out once to save myself the effort: If someone removes an edit you wrote or changes it in a way you disagree with, you cannot just put it back the way it was even once. You have to get agreement/consensus to do so.

What avenues does Edit War say you can use to get agreement or consensus over a contested edit?

~Tropers/LIES — Please brush up on Text-Formatting Rules in future replies to us, that /* */ section is quite hard to parse.

I wanted to note that 'Titipu' was a real place-name, and explain the names by which it were more likely known now—but I should have added that to the end of the bullet-point, not subbed it.

In terms of Example Indentation in Trope Lists, yes. We don't allow single (**) or (***)-level bullets. Either they should be incorporated into the parent example, or both examples should be on (**) or (***). However...

Would that still be Nattering, though?

Yes. Natter includes additions that are irrelevant to the main thrust of the example. In this case, the entry is about how Titipu is an Inherently Funny Word. Its etymology doesn't really have anything to do with how the name is funny-sounding.

What I don't understand: if I see a problem on the order of an entry constituting a Zero Context Example, am I obligated to fix that before adding to it?

I am not really sure what you are asking here, but generally you should expand a Zero-Context Example if you can. If you mean adding a separate example to an entry that's ZCE: you can comment the first one out if you can't expand it, and then add a second, but your indentation should be correct when the page is published.

For example, if you want to add a contextualized second example to this, but can't expand the first one...

You can comment out Alice, Bob, and Charles below it, but leave a good Edit Reason for why you're mucking about with indentation...

  • Love Triangle: Diana has feelings for both Ed and Frank and spends season 2 deciding which one she should marry.
%%**Alice, Bob, and Charles

...but if you can expand both, then that would be best.

  • Love Triangle
    • Bob and Charles are both in love with Alice.
    • Diana has feelings for both Ed and Frank and spends season 2 deciding which one she should marry.
