Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What is the Work?

The Fall of the Infinite Empire is Star Wars fanfic by Dentedpad. Set in the beggining of the end of Rakata Infinite Empire, rebbelion on Korriban leads to crisis for the Empire, while family from Tatooine gets caugh up into a political play that will determined fate of the Empire and the galaxy.

And one Rakata who will change the galaxy.

Who is Zhed-Hai? What has he done?

Rakata Elder, second oldest in the council, second only in age and egual influence to Soaf-Rushk, creator of the Star Forge and closest thing that Infinite Empire had to the singular leader for most of its existence. Zhed-Dai was Genius in genetic engenering, he created many species of the galaxy from other ones to be servants to the Rakata, with Soaf-Rushk even convertly mentoring him to take his place as the guide of the Infinite Empire.

However, early into his career, Zhed-Dai had family of Ewoks into his custody, mother giving her life to protect her children. That was start of Zhed-Dai’s doubt, he woved to destroy the Empire and knowing how they rise from being slaves to Kwa, who were only vassals for Calestials, woved to break the cycle. Zhed-Dai realised that Tatoine’s humans have potential in Force (know to Rakata as the Gift) and woved to nurture it. He took Force sensitive humans under his Protection in his facility on Empire’s capital Lenoh. He at one point captured pair of Kwa and Calestaial, keeping Kwa in the garden where they help him and Calestal locked below.

Eventually it was decided that Tatooine would be bombarded and all life completely exterminated. He had last group of humans brought to his facility, blinding guard Za-Hell after he kills one human. Part of group was a family, Myra, her husband Tytus and and their three children. Myra was strong in the Force and unwitingly rises up as a leader of humans. Zhed-Dai mentores Myra and suggests she has children with strong force sensitive human Halvor. As council become suspicious, Zhed-Dai presents Tytus as force sensitive one, pretending his plan is to create slave army. It earns him support of most of council.

In meantime Sith rebelion brews on their homeworld, under leadership of king Adas. Zhed-Dai decided Sith are to big of the danger and pushes for their extermination. Zhed-Dai convices council, but Adas outsmarts fleet and sends them running. However, Zhed-Dai makes mental contact with Gran-Nock, Rakata guard captured by Adas who achieved serenity. Conforting Adas in guard’ mind, Zhed-Dai implemets a command that Adas will not kill Gran-Nock into king’s mind.

Mentoring Myra and showing her his prisoners, uncluding a Sith he uses as demonstration of dangers galaxy posseses. While Soaf-Rushk discovered part of Zhed-Dai’s plans (still under impresion that he plans to take over the Empire) Thanks to his tracherus advisor Fa-Rush, he allies with warlike Drisk-Koan to attack Lonoh and put end to Zhed-Dai. He and Myra face Calestial, where it and Zhed-Dai argue about nature of galaxy and Rakatan status under them. Zhed-Dai however has another reason to speak with it, on planet Belsavis Rakata have fought Kwa and discovered a mysterious structure. Calestial admits that structure is meant to contain Bogan, one of Old Ones, beings that have existed before universe and were enemies of the Calestials.

Zhed-Dai plans to use Bogan to kill Adas and make Sith non-threat to the galaxy. In meantime Myra discovers other part of his plan, he jad experimented on thousands of Rakatan’s with one goal, create supstance that can take away their Force-Sensitivity. He plans to distribute it thought kolto, medical supstance he created and kill most of Rakatns while giving Force-sensitivity to countless species under their rule. Zhed-Dai faces Fa-Rush and traps his mind in a Star Map, device Rakata use to copy mind of navigator and use them for centuries before degrading. But this one is new model, body dosen’t die and mind dosen’t degrade, and Zhed-Dai has plans for both.

Zhed-Dai has Fa-Rush posses the body warlord Kru-Garth, promising him to be ruler of the Empire in exchange for security codes to Belsavis. He travels to Belsavis and finds Bogan’s prison. Two play mind games, Zhed-Dai at one point lying that he still wants to wipe out Sith. In end Zhed-Dai gets possesed by Bogan and succesfully convices it to kill Adas by bluffing planet is riged to explode. Using connection with Gran-Nock, Zhed-Dai kills Adas, having last heart to heart with Gran. And so last phase of his plan is kicked off, Kwa free Calestail, who kills Bogan and makes portal which sends two ships with humans far away from crumbling Empire, while Zhed-Dai dies content. And he has Fa-Rush’s body deliver a message to Soaf-Rushk, “You have lost”, as his life supports stars giving out and Star Forge stops working.

Myra and her son lead force sensitives on what will eventually become Typhon, They-Dai leaving Copy of his mind in Star Map to guide Force sensitives across the galaxy. Tytus and their daugthers crashes to planet which will eventually become Coruscant. What little Rakata survive Thanks to Zhed-Dai were hiden to be safe from dangers of the galaxy, while Sith are once again send in war and species created by Zhed free to develop.

Is he magnificent?

One word, yes. Zhed-Dai is Genius who destroyed Infinite Empire and led to creation of both Republic and Jedi. He traped psyhical god and conviced it to help it trick Eldrich Abomination into his trap. He constantly changes his plans to ecumulate new variables and comes out on top. He makes sure Force sensitivity grows into humans (to make clear while he tries to convice Myra to have kids with Halvor because of their children’s potential, he dosen’t force them and lets them mostly live their lives in his compound).

Now he isn’t flawless, he can be scared, get angry or be caught off guard, but he mantains his dinfied dementor more often and goes thought a chalenges.

Is he Bastard?

So despite everything, Zhed-Dai has loot of blood on his hands. He created countles races to serve Empire, he burned one asshole guard to death and give Za-Hell suggestion to eat his corpse as a secret test of character (Rakata have long stoped being canibals by time of fic), he plans to kill of most of his race and initially planed to exterminate Sith, who he considers savages who are best of death for most of the fic. However, it is more than simple racism, Zhed-Dai primary motivation for killing them is to prevent them becoming next opressors of the galaxy. Even his hatred is based on how simmiliar he finds them to Rakata. And he ultimately setles for killing Adas and letting Sith be.

Ultimately, Zhed-Dai is defined as somebody who wants to do right by the galaxy. Both his experimants and slavery of created species are not really focused on, with it made clear Zhed-Dai plans to free them with Empire’s fall. He genuinely wants to better the galaxy and shows fatherly side to Myra and respect and even kidness toward other Rakata who he sees Grow beyond their Empire’s ways.

Conclusion?

Big yes.

Edit: I just realised I mispeled his name across whole EP except beggining, it’s Zhed-Hai. tongue

Also since I've seen the franchise has had a few guys listed but has Lawrence Gordon ever been considered for the trope out of curiosity?

Okay I have some questions about Ningguang: What is she doing with that spy network? Is she bringing up dark secrets of people to blackmail them, or is she just using it to make someone more palatable to be sold to (like finding out their interests)? Cause if it's the latter I feel like she's just a slightly dark grandiose Guile Hero. I did see her using info against one merchant, but that guy was an Asshole Victim.

[up] As far as I can tell, she doesn't use it to Blackmail people except in cases like that guy you mentioned. She mainly just does it in order to get an idea as to Liyue's economic state in order to conduct her aforementioned research for her board. Granted, it probably also has the added benefit of making sure she has the absolute edge since she effectively gets all the information while pretty much every other merchant has to work with literal scraps. Though if the issue is that it doesn't make her enough of a "Bastard", I would make the argument that spying on the whole populace is shady regardless of what you do with that info.

Btw for Van Kleiss. Slight expansion if people don't mind

  • The ruthless and brilliant Van Kleiss is the man responsible for the nanite disaster worldwide. Ruling his home nation of Abyssus, Van Kleiss wastes little time in becoming Rex's arch-nemesis by scheming to use Rex as his pawn. When he brings the young Circe into his circle, Van Kleiss plays on her feelings for Rex to use the both of them while constantly outwitting Rex and his organization, even almost taking over the United Nations. Even after losing his abilities to Rex, Van Kleiss simply responds by using a spy to infiltrate Providence and absorb Rex's nanites to not only restore his lost abilities but gain new ones. When sent back through time, Van Kleiss time and time again bends history to his will by manipulating each great human civilisation all across time into doing his biding. Van Kleiss even manipulates Roman Emperor septimus Severus into allowing him free scientific reign after impressing him. Returning to the present, Van Kleiss feigns insanity to trick Black Knight and the others into lowering their guards, while he secretly helps set up a plan to absorb the powers of the Meta-nanites. Eventually betraying everyone, Van Kleiss reveals that after he absorbs the powers of Meta-nanites that he will become a god, and ends the series implied to one day return to power once more.

Alright, time for the Atlas may writeup.

  • Atlas May was the founder of the titular Lackadaisy Speakeasy. Originally just a coffee shop owner, Atlas took advantage of prohibition and a hidden limestone network beneath his cafe to establish a speakeasy, making sure to vet which patrons could be trusted by having them wear a club pin. Atlas recruited Viktor after seeing his fighting style by paying a lawyer to shorten his jail time and honed Mordecai's antisocial nature and analytical skills to make him a proper hitman, before pairing the two up. After teaming up with the Arbogasts due to their location near a railway and having a wine shipment from them be hijacked by Sicilians fighting the Marigold, Atlas sicked Mordecai and Viktor on them to secure an alliance with Marigold, steal their cars, and take back the liquor. Atlas then took a woman named Mary Ellen in, knowing her band would come with her, and turning her and Viktor more towards the criminal lifestyle to make sure they'd stick with him. Enlarging his empire together for years before his death, Atlas was remembered well by his employees and lived up to his name as the man who held the Lackadaisy together.

Will get to the other keeper soon, my EP for him got wiped, so I have to start from scratch.

Yes to Zhen Dai.

Let me get a start on these before I do anymore and get weighed down. The Inquisitor will be done on Saturday I think, and the swap can be done on this next week when I get the next half of the Old Republic tree put together.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic
    • Sith Warrior story
      • Lord Draahg is the apprentice to Darth Vengean, rival to the Warrior's master Darth Baras, but in truth he is a loyal spy and true right hand of Baras himself. A master of pretending to be far weaker than he appears, Draahg is a supremely skilled and nigh invulnerable lightsaber duelist that feeds information on Vengean to Baras and ensures his downfall with the assistance of the Warrior. He works with Baras to betray and nearly kill the Warrior and personally entraps them into a duel by overpowering and kidnapping their companions. Draahg is only defeated after being pushed into a vat of molten metal, but survives by sheer force of will and unending hate. The now cyborg Draahg nearly assassinates their new benefactor Darth Vowrawn multiple times and prepares a final trap that pushes the Warrior to their brink before Draahg is finally defeated for good.
      • Darth Vowrawn is unique among Sith Lords of the Empire for treating their rivalries and intrigues as a fun game while being skilled enough at them to survive well into old age. Vowrawn is the head of the Sphere of Production and Logistics and keeps the entire economy of the Empire running while controlling the rise and fall of half the Dark Council upon which he sits. Threatened by Baras's claim to be the new Voice of the Emperor, the ever affable Vowrawn becomes the benefactor of the Warrior and uses them to expose Baras's spy network on Corellia and eliminate a Jedi double agent Baras was using to target his Sith rivals. His enemy's downfall is ensured when Vowrawn masterminds the release of the mysterious Entity Baras used to see the future, and sneaks the Warrior into a meeting of the Dark Council to finish off Baras once and for all. Later seen as a threat by the Emperor himself, Vowrawn manipulates the Warrior into destroying droids spying on them both and can ultimately work his way into becoming the new Emperor following the devastating war with the Eternal Empire.

What's the work?

Batman: The Adventures Continue is a comic continuation of Batman: The Animated Series, introducing several of his modern rogues into the DCAU: from the Red Hood, to the Court of Owls, to a certain slightly older character...

Who is Deathstroke?

An infamous mercenary as usual, Deathstroke is hired by Lex Luthor to assassinate the Batman. However, Slade has grander plans than just a dead cape: he wants the Bats' sidekicks as well. Slade's partner, a woman named Sunny, orchestrates his introduction to the caped crusaders by manipulating Clayface into an attack. Slade subdues the mud monster and politely makes himself known to the heroes as he impresses Batgirl and Robin with his skills, before quickly beating an escape when Bruce questions why he's in Gotham.

Slade pops up a few more times to fight rogues and get on the sidekicks' good sides, showing off how good the mercenary lifestyle is and gaining their trust by pointing out a mysterious figure (Jason Todd, not yet revealed to still be alive) that keeps spying on them. Slade ultimately "reveals" he's been sent to Gotham by a collection of government agencies to stop Firefly, who has been hired to commit a "9/11" level disaster—in reality, it's just Sunny wearing a convincing replica of the arsonist's costume.

Slade eventually convinces Bats he's legit, and the two team up to stop "Firefly"... only for Slade to naturally betray him. His ultimate goal is to frame Firefly for Batman's death; from there, he'll heroically hunt down the real villain and kill him, earning the appreciation of Batgirl and Robin and convincing them to join him in the mercenary business. Unfortunately for him, Jason spied on him monologuing about his plan earlier and sent a warning to Barbara. She and Robin save Batman, fighting ensues, and Slade sets off a fiery explosion in an effort to escape in the chaos. Unfortunately for him again, Batman just beans him with a fire extinguisher, and he and Sunny are arrested.

...For a short while. After Jason puts his own scheme into motion and is subsequently believed to be dead once more, he finds himself waking up in the company of Slade and Sunny. Slade merely muses that he's "good at securing early parole" and invites Jason to join their mercenary team, giving the fallen Bat a new family to appreciate his skills.

Mitigating factors?

It's Slade without his grosser aspects, so... yeah, he fits easy. Charming, amoral mercenary who enacts a clever scheme to break apart the Batfamily and convince the survivors to side with him, only foiled by an outside-context player who has spent weeks surveilling every cape in the city. Even with his ultimate defeat being kind of anticlimactic, he more than makes up for it by effortlessly securing his release and escaping with a prime recruit. An easy yes, and I'll be getting to Jason himself soon.

Hey, i'm gonna be busy in a few hours, i hope it's not too bad if i put my write-up of Kaato early.

  • Jojolion: Kaato Higashikata is the matriarch of the current genration of the Higashikata Family, and a vital part of developing the ambitious Jobin Higashikata. Having covered up and later taking the fall for Jobin's Accidental Murder of his own bully when he was a kid, she teached him into taking priority of his family over everything, which would lead him up into being involved with the Locacaca conspiracy to cure the family's curse, which involved the eldest son always being killed by a mysterious illness. Having served her time in jail, she makes it clear that she plans to take her reward for sacrificing so much for her family, often giving Jobin guidance with his plans. In the final battle, after her son Jobin was killed, she steps up into the fight between Tooru and the heroes by calmly bypassing the immaculately powerful "Wonder of U", holds him down, and uses the new version of the Locacaca to bypass the family's curse unto Tooru, killing him once and for all. Although she ends up killed by Tooru's power, she acknowledges it, and ends up being succesful on carrying out her son's mission.
