Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Next from The Saint newspaper strip from Scrags!

What has Prince Hugo done?

  • The Usurper of the fictional country of Valdor (and villain of the storyline also called "Valdor") Hugo is a shining example of Aristocrats Are Evil. The "most unscrupulous man in all of Valdor," Hugo seeks to inherit his country's throne over his good-hearted cousin Prince Paul. Not even out of any misplaced patriotism or anything, but sheer greed: "Hugo has expensive tastes—and the principality of Valdor is worth at least one million dollars a year!"
  • To this end, Hugo assassinates Paul by having the latter's private airliner shot down. Hugo also targets Paul's daughter, Princess Elaine, and tries to kill her in a way that's overkill: he has his minions sneak a bomb on a commercial airliner filled with dozens of other innocent people, intending to blow up the plane and everyone on it an hour after departure, solely to kill Elaine. Simon throws the bomb off the plane seconds before it explodes.
  • Hugo tops himself again when it's revealed he has his own Secret Police and secret prison, which he gleefully uses to "disappear" multitudes of his own subjects for Cold-Blooded Torture and execution. Hugo plans to have Simon imprisoned here, keeps a treacherous female minion in line by threatening this fate for her brother, and he eventually orders that all of Elaine's loyal servants, plus over half-a-dozen witnesses to his evil, all be arrested and placed into the secret prison to await their fates.
  • Unfortunately for the Prince, Simon exposes him to the nation with an Engineered Public Confession. At the end of his rope, Hugo challenges Simon to a duel to the death, figuring Simon will be an easy target. Instead, Simon kicks his ass. Hugo tries to goad Simon into finishing him to avoid the indignity of a public trial, but Simon spares him precisely so he can face everything he deserves in a court of law.
Any mitigating factors?
  • Zilch.
Heinous standard?
  • One of the perishingly few villains in the strip capable of meeting Zoran for attempted body count. Hugo is using his resources for everything they're worth, and he racks up a lot of varied cruelties for a one-shot villain, from trying to blow up a plane full of people to kill one woman, or revealing he has his own dedicated secret police and torture chamber, really, there's nothing to say I haven't already.

When Tom and Huck accidentally witness the crime, Joe kidnaps their beloved frog Rebel as a hostage so he can try to kill the kids to prevent them from saving Mutt. Even when the truth is revealed, Joe attacks Tom and Becky out of sheer spite, trying to tear them to pieces while their loved ones watch.

In honor of Lord Barkis Bittern's possible re-proposal (I really hope so), here's my first proposal here. I hope tropers like it. In the cleanup thread, I suggested removing the Bloody Fox from Bloody Knights. The problem was that her worst crime was not in the game, her actions were not given enough attention, she did not stand out among the vampires, she was not treated as a CM, another CM was superior to her in all respects despite having fewer resources and she sincerely thanked for the release, and also fulfilled her promise to tell the other vampires that Jeremy, one of the two main characters, is one of them. As a result, she found herself infinitely far from the CM. But there is another villain in the game who does not have these problems and has compelling arguments for himself.

==What is the work?==

Bloody Knights is an Action RPG computer game with elements of Hack and Slash, developed by Deck 13 and released in 2013.

The game takes place during the Middle Ages, somewhere around the 16th century. In the past, vampires dominated humanity and kept people as slaves. However, over time, people began to increase in number and as a result, humanity was able to fight back against the vampires. Thus, begins a long war between humans and vampires. The plot revolves around a powerful artifact, the Bloody Seal, which can change both the outcome of the entire war and the balance of the world itself. The main characters are a man named Jeremy, the captain of the Holy Order and the vampire Alice. As fate would have it, their souls were bound together by the priest Bartholomew as a last chance after the order lost many people when they stormed the Sanctuary where the Blood Seal is located to protect it from vampires. But having reached the Seal and after fatally wounding one of the vampire commanders, the latter manages to turn Jeremy into one of them. The Blood Seal is stolen, which leads to the splitting of the Moon and the appearance of dangerous tides. Jeremy and Alice are left for dead for being vampires, but they survive and escape, intending to find the Blood Seal.

Throughout the game, Jeremy and Alice will find themselves in various dangerous and interesting situations, facing various threats. Since they both share one body and if one of them dies, then 2 will die at once, Jeremy and Alice must work together to survive on the outskirts of Bavaria, along the way fighting both humans and vampires, as well as creatures, hostile to both sides. And most importantly, they both will have to change their views and realize, that both on the part of vampires and on the part of people there is good and evil, in particular, they both (especially Jeremy) understand that not all vampires are evil and dangerous, also that even such sadistic vampires as Bloody Fox are capable of goodness and compassion , but at the same time, they both also understand that people themselves can be incredibly cruel, depraved and monstrous. A striking example of which is our candidate.

Who is the First Paladin and what have he done?

The best warrior of Rome, the strongest knight of the First Roman Army and a minister of the church, who is also something like both the commander-in-chief of the army of Rome and the leader of the church, here according to Jeremy, Paladin had already met Jeremy and according to Jeremy, "Paladin was an ass." So, yes, even long before his evil, Paladin did not seem to be a particularly good person.

For one reason or another, people began to lose faith in the teachings of the Church, which Paladin did not like. Having heard about the Bloody Seal, Paladin began to make his own plans for it, wanting to bring people back under the influence of the church... by any means necessary. Unseen for most of the game, Paladin takes matters into his own hands when Bartholomew informs him that the vampires have the Blood Seal and are about to summon a powerful demon to help them enslave humanity again.

The Paladin collects on the entire First Roman Army and makes it to the top of the mountain where the demon was summoned. Having found Bartholomew, Jeremy and Alice, the Paladin thanks the priest for finding the Seal and orders him to give the Seal to him, although Bartholomew was going to deliver the artifact to Rome himself, but the Paladin notes that Rome thinks differently. When Bartholomew asks about his companions, Jeremy and Alice, the Paladin is indignant with these words, saying that their place is in the fire, threatening Bartholomew with the same fate if he called them companions again. Feeling that he does not have good intentions, Bartholomew gives the Seal to Jeremy and Alice and asks them to return it to its place in order to restore the Moon and the balance of the world, while he himself will try to delay the Paladin and his army as long as possible, noting that the Paladin they will all be killed if they linger. The Paladin mocks the priest, finding his "futile attempts" funny. To which Bartholomew responds, preparing for battle, as the vampires flee:

Bartholomew: Victory will you come at a high price...Deceitful Roman knight.

Having seemingly killed Bartholomew off-screen, the Paladin pursues Jeremy and Alice until they reach the Sanctuary, the location from which the Seal was taken. Ordering his troops to kill Jeremy and Alice and take the Seal, Paladin eventually reaches the crypt. Jeremy and Alice fight their way through Rome's best soldiers and also reach the crypt, where they come face to face with the Paladin.

Paladin and Jeremy exchange words about their pasts and Paladin notes that if Jeremy were the same person, he would throw himself into the fire instead of drinking the blood of his former colleagues. Jeremy might note that he didn't become a vampire by choice and the Paladin knows that (while the Paladin notes that there is always a choice and that Jeremy should have thrown himself into the fire) or that he has realized that not all vampires are monsters. Paladin angrily remarks that Jeremy has gone soft and that he is a disgrace to Rome, and Paladin is more than happy to finish him off. If you ask why he doesn't want to return the Seal, then the Paladin's true intentions will be revealed and how low he is willing to fall for the sake of power and control.

Jeremy: Tell me, why don't you want to return the seal to its rightful place?

Paladin: RETURN the seal? I WILL DESTROY her and unleash a Flood that Noah never dreamed of!

Jeremy: But why, paladin? You will kill millions of people!

Paladin: And will return the survivors to the fold of the church. People have lost faith. Then instill the fear of God in their souls!

Jeremy: Rome is ready to sacrifice the lives of thousands - no, millions? In order to revive faith in people? This is madness!

Paladin: There is no faith without sacrifice. You are a vampire. You can't understand.

Jeremy: I understand very well. No matter who I am, I can still tell the difference between good and evil. I will end things with you and return the seal to its place.

So yes, Paladin's true intention was to destroy the seal, which would cause the Flood to fall upon the entire world, killing millions of innocent men, women and children, to then provide refuge for the survivors and either convince or force people to believe in the Church again. And Paladin will probably also want humanity to be restored under the leadership of the church. Horrified and disgusted, Jeremy and Alice refuse to give the Seal to the Paladin and engage him in battle for the fate of the whole world.

Having received some injury, Paladin offers Jeremy one last chance to renounce "evil" and repent of his sins, bringing Castello as his executioner. Once he is finally killed, Paladin angrily activates his powers and rushes at Jeremy and Alice, trying to kill them. to destroy the Seal and free the Flood. Eventually, after a difficult battle, the Paladin is defeated and his shield are destroyed. The First Paladin boasts that they cannot kill him since he is under the protection of Rome. Unfortunately for him, Bartholomew comes up behind him, having survived the battle with him, and cuts the Paladin's throat, causing Rome's greatest knight to fall and eventually be completely destroyed, saving the entire world from the second Flood. And although the Seal is eventually destroyed anyway, Luna heals herself, and Jeremy and Alice go looking for a magician who will make Jeremy human again, along the way, looking for new adventures and fighting for both people and vampires.

Emollient qualities?

He acts as if causing the Flood is a necessary evil. But the only ones who will benefit from causing a catastrophe for the whole world are him and the church. Neither the story itself, nor the Paladin himself even pretends that he has any good intentions and his goal is purely selfish. The game does not explain why people began to lose faith in the Church, perhaps it was the fault of the Church itself, but whatever the reason, Paladin had other means to regain people's trust. Instead, he decides to choose the worst way to solve his problem, not caring about the countless deaths around the world.

Compare this to a group of vampires (there is no specific vampire who summons a demon, as Robert said) who summon a demon to save their race from humans. It's not about a sense of superiority, but about caring for one's race. The Ra'osh demon may also be a good fit, as he seems more sincere when explaining his goal to Jeremy and Alice and is clearly unhappy when they confront him. Maybe he just took over the vampires' purpose, but he seems to care too much about the vampires' purpose to say that for him it's just an order. In any case, even the demon seems more honorable than the Paladin ever was.

He reminds Jeremy that he was a legend, but in his tone, he scoffs more, especially noting that he was a legend when he was alive, to which Jeremy notes that Paladin was still an asshole, in fact the game is straight to say that Paladin is just making fun of Jeremy. He offers Jeremy one last chance to renounce evil and repent, but this “mercy” is no different from Bellroc’s “mercy” towards Jim. Just an attempt to convince the hero to give up so that it will be easier to achieve his goal. Moreover, when surrendering, the hero will still be killed. Moreover, it is implied that the reason why Paladin brought Castello was solely to mock Jeremy. And although after Castello’s death, the Paladin shouts, “No.” What have you done?", it is clear that this is not out of concern. Next, Paladin activates his powers and shouts that it is time to end. It is clear from his tone and words that he is simply angry that Jeremy and Alice are still alive and not shows not an iota of concern for Castello.

Otherwise, no. He has no problem killing other people, as he threatens Bartholomew with fire and then tries to kill him. And here, by his tone and words, he just seems to hate vampires because of racism, not because of what they did. Even when he arrives and should have realized that Jeremy and Alice helped save humanity, he still tries to kill them, mocking Jeremy and trying to convince him to give up because he is "evil." Even though his actions and himself are far, far worse than Alice and Jeremy combined have ever been. Hypocrite meets Holier Than Thou.

Disgusting standard?

Worst in the game along with Medea. The number of deaths he plans to cause and the scale of his evil is unparalleled. And while it's basically one act, it's a rare case where a villain crosses a single MEH, but that MEH is so terrifying and monstrous that it easily allows the villain to be quite terrifying. In this regard, he is very similar to Admiral Lucius Kobel from Red Faction Guerlla. They both perform basically the same action, but this action involves mass murder on a planetary scale, and if Kobel's plan would have killed somewhere around thousands, then Paladin's plan would have killed at least millions. And unlike the Kobel, the Paladin also has a nasty "Kick the Dog" about the threat to Bartholomew by burning. If the admiral could pass the standard, then the Paladin even more so can.

And although Rome is mentioned, there is nothing, nothing, no facts or evidence that the Paladin was ordered to cause the Flood. The entire game doesn't even hint that this is anyone's plan other than the Paladin himself. Considering that he is technically the head of the church, then technically from the side of the church he is Rome itself. In any case, this is too vague and foggy, and given that after the death of the Paladin, his troops scatter, I think we can confidently and comfortably attribute the Flood plan solely to the Paladin.

The only thing worth talking about is that he is taking steps, because the main reason why Robert did not decide to offer he was that he failed to kill millions. After all, if the villain doesn't take steps to carry out his intentions, there is no weight and therefore it's just a terrible plan on paper. As is already clear from the plot, Paladin is not like that. He actually takes steps to cause the Flood. He arrives with his army, demands that Batholomew give him the Seal, attacks him when he hands it over to Jeremy and Alice, chases them, orders his troops to take the Seal from them, tries to convince Jeremy to give the artifact to him, offers him one last chance and tries twice kill. He's not just some vague threat who claims to want to bring about a catastrophic event that will kill a lot of people. The Paladin really does everything possible to make the Flood happen. Compare again with Ra'osh, who simply appears, explains his purpose and motives, and attacks the heroes. Paladin goes much further. So in the end there are no problems here.

And yes, Paladin's plan is much worse than Ra'osh and the vampires' plans. Those simply target people and then not everyone, while the Flood destroys people, vampires, werewolves and anyone else. Important survivors people for Paladin and Church, the rest in their eyes can die.

Verdict.

Keeper. Replacement for Bloody Fox.

[up]Sorry, there was quite a lot of important stuff to cover. I shortened it a little, I'll continue tomorrow.

In short:The Paladin threatens Bartholomew with burning simply for calling the vampires Jeremy and Alice companions, and tries to destroy the Blood Seal, which will cause a Flood that will kill at least millions of people. Worst in the game along with Medya. Takes steps to implement his plan.

Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist, doesn't care about Castello and is angry because the heroes are still alive, his mention of Jeremy being a legend is just a mockery, all the facts indicate that the Flood plan belongs solely to the Palatine, his attempt to convince Jeremy giving up is simply a relief to achieve his goal. Hypocrite with Holier Than Thou elements

Appreciated. If the Paladin's aware that the flood will kill many, sure to him.
