Old Complete Monster cleanup thread
Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here
Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.
Here is how the process works:
- If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.
- After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".
- Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!
Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:
- To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!
- No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
- Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
- Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
- Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.
- Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").
- If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.
- If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!
- Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.
- Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.
- If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
- For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
- If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.
- Please keep all discussions "in-house".
- What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
- Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
- Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.
If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:
What is the work?
This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.
Who is the candidate and what have they done?
This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.
Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?
This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.
Are they bad enough?
A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:
- Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
- The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
- The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)
Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.
Final verdict?
This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

Ok, EP time!
What is the Episode?
The title is "Zaginione Dzieci" ("Missing Children") and two children are kidnapped for ransom. Later, when parents do in fact have the money, kidnappers double the price.
Who are Aleksander Gawryluk nicknamed "Iwan", Michał Gabrylowski nicknamed "Długi" (which translates to "Long"), and Jarosław Matras?
The first two are two Russian kidnappers (their names are very Polish sounding but it's stated clealry they are Russian). They kidnap children all over Poland while taking over the ambulances where they burn alive ambulance drivers and demand ransom for children. It's implied that they follow with killing children since there has never been evidence against them. In the episode, they do kill the current ambulance driver and demand ransom for children. They also murder the neigbor of the couple by burying her alive since she is the witness. Iwan and Długi demand ransom for the girl and gave the boy to Jarosław Matras who is... the real biological father of the boy! It's revealed that mother of children was bored and had romance with another man who started being very agressive and sexually harassed her and she went back to her husband (he had no knowledge of her romance up to that point). Police finally catch Iwan and Długi and arrest them. They check data on Matras and it is revealed that he used to be in jail for savagely beating someone. Matras made deal with the Russians. They kept girl for themselves and gave him the boy. Last scene of the episode is Matras holding the boy hostage in front of his "legal father" and screams with a gun "Tell him now who his real father is! Tell him who is real father is, or I will kill him!" Boy says "I want my papa!" Jarosław Matras punches him in the face and says "I am your dad! Shut your filthy mouth! Tell him who his real father is!" Police arrive and tell him to free the boy who takes the opportunity to run to his legal father and Matras screams "Don't move you brat!" and aims his gun but gets shot dead himself. Episode ends and narrator reveals that both Iwan and Długi got life imprisonment.
Heinous?
Russians I think are. Massively killing drivers and kidnapping children and likely killing them too. Plus, burying alive a neighbor. I think they pass. Admitteldy, show has very high heinous standard so I will mostly list approved C Ms. We have Faith Adalet and Łukasz Skowron who are human traffickers. We have Mirosław Bizoń who brutally murdered his own parents, contantly rapes his younger sister, starved his grandmother to death, and burned alive a young man and raped and attempted to kill his girlfriend. We have two serial pedophiles who also attempted to kill victims who resisted them (and one succeeded). We have a serial rapist and killer.
Plenty of nasty non-C Ms too. A guy who kidnapped a 4 year old girl for ransom and attempted to kill her after ransom was paid (she was saved thankfully and I E Ped him due how Hate Sink he was but he was downvoted). A guy who kidnapped 13 year old boy for ransom and murdered him after ransom was paid. An Evil Uncle who threw his 7 year old nephew of the apartment's balcony because the little boy accidenlty saw his cheating on his wife. We also have a woman who murdered her two children. A young girl who murdered her older brother who didn't like her boyfriend. A 15 year old girl who murdered her younger sister with Down Syndrome. And gang of neo nazis who tortured Georgian girl and set her younger brother on fire. They were arrested while raiding a Vietnamese restaurant and threating (possibly wanting to kill) Vietnamese owners.
Still I think these two barely pass. Doubt Matras does though; only included him cause of how Hate Sink he is and cause I felt he was too involved in the plot.
Verdict?
Lean yes to Iwan and Długi but doubt about Matras.

With other two how strong are implications they kill children after getting ransom?

If I am being honest... when children get kidnapped they send parents the message that if they won't see the money or they call cops, children will arrive back in pieces. And about other ransoms, it's just stated "There were many children kidnapped ransoms all over the country and four this year! Typical ransom!" That's it. It isn't actually stated if they killed the children.

@ACW, Arakhn and Requiem both have less resources than the rest of the keepers sans Diabolique, as the Nictus are actually relatively few in number and their organization is Hated by All, which means outside of Nictus related matters their influence is kinda limited. And now we have... well just take a look!
What is the Work?
City of Heroes was a popular MMO in the early 2000s to 2012 when it was sadly shut down. In the game you play as a Hero (or as a Villain) and go around doing deeds and fighting mighty foes.
Giovanna Scaldi rose from humble begins as the daughter of farmers in the 17th century. For all her time growing up, everyone did whatever Giovanna wanted as she was unconsciously mind controlling them with her immense psionic powers. When she was 15 some soldiers came to collect taxes and eventually burned down her parent's farm. Outraged, Giovanna psionically order the soldiers to burn each other, which they promptly did. Realizing she had the power to control others like puppets, Giovanna decided to exploit this to do whatever she wanted.
Using her psychic powers to convince anyone she met that she was a noble Duchess, Giovanna set about wrapping the entirety of the city of Venice around her finger. Hooking up with an occultist named Uriel, Giovanna began supplementing her tremendous psionic abilities with dark magics, and she soon mind raped the entire populace of the city into her personal harem, enjoying watching the entire city descend into debauchery while being totally dependent on her whims to act.
Being confronted by a mutant church hero who was able to resist her mind control, Giovanna soon found her hold on the city broken as her furious victims turned their anger on her. Luckily for Giovanna, her partner in crime Uriel discovered a dark ritual with which to bind her soul to a porcelain mask that would then be worn by another Human who Giovanna would possess like a sick meat puppet. Unfortunately for her, Uriel was arrested by Venetian authorities and her mask was lost to time...
Until Giovanna's distant descendent Vanessa De Vore stumbled upon the mask and felt compelled to put it on. When Vanessa did so, she was immediately assaulted by Giovanna's will as her ancient ancestor attempted to hijack Vanessa's body. Terrified of the mask, Vanessa vowed to never don it again. That is until the dawn of the Rikti War. Desperate to help others being slaughtered by the invading alien force, Vanessa reluctantly put the mask on and allowed Giovanna's power to flow through her in order to help innocents.
Giovanna was content with this because as Vanessa was doing this, Giovanna set about manipulating Vanessa into embracing her, eventually managing to addict Vanessa to her own presence. Shortly after this, Giovanna manipulated Vanessa into dominating the young and wealthy of Paragon City as she got Vanessa to start devouring the souls of her playthings whenever they died. Empowering all of Vanessa's slaves with mystical and psionic power, Giovanna created the Carnival of Shadows to indulge in all manner of perverse pleasures at her discretion.
Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?
None. While she would have redeeming qualities in her family and her lovers in theory, the fact that she cared for her family only as far as they entertained her (as she abandoned them after her farm was burned down and Giovanna went to Venice) indicates that she saw them less as actual loved ones and more as toys to be played with and discarded when she gets bored. Uriel could have also been a redeeming quality, if it weren't for the fact that Giovanna seems to have basically forgotten he existed in the modern day, making no attempt to bring him back in any way shape or form, or even acknowledging that they were once lovers, or mentioning him in any way at all, indicating that like with her family when Uriel stopped being useful and entertaining to her Giovanna basically shrugged and went "Oh no! Anyways..." and carried on like nothing had happened. And the rest of her lovers were all forced into it, with Giovanna only caring about entertaining herself.
Are they bad enough?
Absolutely. While she isn't a genocidal madwoman like the rest of the City of Heroes keepers she has something completely unique. City wide mass rape. And that isn't an exaggeration, as she explicitly takes joy and forcing people (seemingly regardless of gender) into being her "lovers". Every single one of her "toys" were completely incapable of consenting as Giovanna used her psychic powers to enslave them to her will. Not to mention she is one of the only villains in the entire game to utilize soul devouring, even amongst those capable of using necromantic arts. As a forewarning she is probably gonna be the only actual rapist I ever EP, and I trust it isn't hard to see why.
Final Verdict?
Out of all the villains I have ever done, Giovanna is the smallest in scale... but in many ways the most disgusting because again, mass mental and sexual rapist, in addition to mass murder.

Abstain on the traffickers. Out of curiosity since Giovanna stands wholly apart from the Nictus Duo, wouldn't it be Nictus Duo + Giovanna since they aren't really a trio? Apologies if I am asking semantics, its just easier for me personally to keep track of that way since Arakhn and Requiem are actually a team.

Giovanna has limited mass murder but city wide Mind Rape and actual rape, the Nictus duo have an army roughly comparable to that of Nemesis and Hro'Dohtz, even if they are less successful, and all of them lack the godlike powers possessed by Mot and obtained by Diabolique.

- Pixote: Sapatos Broncos and Almir represent the worst of the corrupt society that preys on children. Sapatos runs a cruel rehabilitation home for juvenile delinquents where he lets rampant physical and sexual abuse take place, locking the children in dark rooms completely naked to torture them. Sapatos sells children to the corrupt cop Almir for Almir to viciously torture and kill, so he can then frame them for crimes he is too lazy to solve. When one of Almir's latest victims dies from internal bleeding and the boy's mother raises an outrage, Sapatos and Almir frame another boy for it, kill him, then try to frame the boy's lover for his death out of bigotry.
Ok with thanks to mir for pointing me in the direction, got one from One Piece for us, specifically the 6th anime movie: One Piece Baron Omatsuri And The Secret Island.
Who is Lily Carnation? What has it done?
- A seemingly adorable little flower with a high-pitched voice, Lily Carnation is actually an Eldritch Abomination that feeds on human beings with a smile on its face. Existing on a secluded island where it is capable of controlling life itself, Lily found the pirate Omatsuri on its land, the man destitute and depressed after the loss of his crew in a storm. Lily offered Omatsuri a deal: help it regularly find snacks to feast on, and it would "revive" Omatsuri's crew to live happily ever after on the island as a family.
- For years, Lily and Omatsuri have caused hundreds and hundreds of ships to wreck on the island, the crews then being picked off one by one to be fed to Lily. Lily keeps up the illusion of Omatsuri's crew being alive, turning those it feeds into further meat puppets that attract evermore hapless people to the island to be fed upon.
- When the Straw Hat Crew show up, Omatsuri and Lily do their usual song-and-dance routine of pretending the island is safe and forcing the crew to perform increasingly-dangerous tasks, separating them from each other so Lily can consume them. Lily nearly feasts upon an entire family including the small children who have been trapped on the island as well.
- Though Lily mutates into its true from when Luffy comes to rescue his crew, Luffy manages to work with his friends to destroy the vile plant, immediately revealing all of the "revived" citizens of the island to be nothing but plants spawned by Lily made to believe they are real and all of them dying along with their creator. Omatsuri is taken down, Luffy's crew rescued, and the island rendered safe for future travellers.
Mitigating features?
Lily's not a particularly deep character but it's a hungry predator capable of making deals who has used its power to create a vast fake society and takes very obvious enjoyment from its actions with its routine smile and evil laughter at what it's doing. It also has dialogue before The Reveal of its true nature to paint itself as a "harmless" little flower creature, showing it's capable of speech and trickery. And while its motive does come down to "it wants food", it goes through such needlessly cruel methods to carry it out and is capable of surviving without food, making its desires far more gluttonous and sadistic than just an animal needing to survive.
Heinousness?
It has killed thousands of people over the years, represented with hundreds of ships having crashed on the island, each filled with crews. It uses their likenesses to populate Omatsuri's kingdom with puppets that think they are sentient, but are actually just creations of Lily's. Even for One Piece, it's bad enough.

What is the Work?
City of Heroes was a popular MMO in the early 2000s to 2012 when it was sadly shut down. In the game you play as a Hero (or as a Villain) and go around doing deeds and fighting mighty foes.
Arakhn is the leader of the Nictus, a faction of the Energy Being race known as the Kheldians who have resorted to using Dark Science to give themselves the ability to prolong their own lives by draining the life essence of other living beings. Shortly after the Nictus began to do this, the other Kheldians objected, resulting in a war between the two factions that spills out across the cosmos. As far back as the time of the Ancient Romans, the Nictus made contact with Humanity and started using them as vessels with which to execute their dark will. Arakhn herself would start flexing her muscle in more modern times by having Nictus make contact with members of Mussolini's fascist Italy and later the 5th Column of Nazi Germany, though she remained hands off during World War II.
Decades later in the modern day, Arakhn starts really exerting her influence, and finally appears in person. Assisting a villain known as the Center in overthrowing the 5th Column and creating the equally fascist group known as the Council, Arakhn makes it clear to those in the known that she has much bigger plans. She uses her own Council troops as unwilling hosts to her Nictus underlings, creating the Galaxy Corps which is loyal to Arakhn alone, as well as using other unlucky Council troops as guinea pigs for her real goal: the assimilation of all of mankind by the Nictus. First using her resources to give special Nictus brand weapons to other villain factions in order to combat other Kheldians who have come to Earth to stop her, Arakhn sets to work with bringing forth devices known as Shadow Cysts, a kind of crystal used to provide life to and transport Nictus.
Beginning to plant Shadow Seeds, which will grow into these Cysts all over Paragon City, Arakhn also makes sure to keep the heroes pursuing her at bay by having her Nictus gradually infiltrate some other villain factions such as the Freakshow by implanting them with the same implants that go in Arakhn's Galaxy soldiers. As the heroes rapidly catch up to her, Arakhn implements the final stages of her plan and kicks them into overdrive, managing to create a fully grown Shadow Cyst and bring more of her Nictus forces into Paragon City before being thwarted. Even after her arrest, she manages to break free and begins hatching brand new plots to increase the power of the Nictus, determined to turn Earth into a new Nictus homeworld.
Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?
No siree! For those thinking that Arakhn might care for her other Nictus, she is more than happy to try and murder former Nictus who have grown to regret their decisions and turn back to the light. Additionally, Arakhn's ally Requiem (seen below) is implied to have started a romance with her... that they are both more than happy to cancel and turn on each other when they believe the other is failing.
Are they bad enough?
Yes. We actually get to see what would happen in the event that the Nictus succesfully take over Earth: a ravaged wasteland populated by nothing but themselves, with the Nictus having explicitly killed everyone on the planet other than themselves. Further still, Arakhn has been waging a war of total genocide against her Kheldian enemies for eons.
Final Verdict?
Absolutely a keeper.
Ridolfo Uzzano was once a mere lapdog of Mussolini shortly before World War II, and he later became something far, far worse. Discovering a cavern being used as a staging ground by the Nictus, Uzzano was merged with the Nictus known as Dirge of Entropy, and together they became the Supervillain known as Requiem. Seeking out likeminded allies, Requiem created the openly Nazi 5th Column and waged war against the Allies, even launching an attack on Paragon City in the United States, which was ultimately thwarted.
Decades later, Requiem joined forces with the Nictus leader Arakhn, with their decades long plot to subvert the entirety of Earth with Nictus coming to light as Requiem alongside Arakhn lead a Nictus subversion of the Council. However Requiem would eventually grow frustrated with the lack of success of his and Arakhn's joint plans and ultimately decided to once more forge ahead on his own.
It was at this time that Requiem found a means of transporting himself to the past, specifically to the time of Ancient Rome, and the city of Cimerora. There Requiem made a dark alliance with the traitorous usurper Romulus Augustus with the goal of taking over the past and then bringing the joint 5th Column, Nictus, and Cimeroran troops to the modern day in order to conquer Earth the old fashioned way. To this end, Requiem supplied Romulus with some of the 5th Column's best technology and personally assisted Romulus in battling the time traveling heroes who had come to stop them.
Later returning to the present, Requiem would lead the 5th Column in waging a war against the Council in the hopes of retaking his former resources, all the while making sure to consolidate power for himself to use for an unknown, sinister purpose.
Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?
Nada. As stated above with Arakhn, he has no genuine care for anyone other than himself and his own power.
Are they bad enough?
He is openly assisting Arakhn with her own atrocities, in addition to later setting himself apart by bringing his forces to the past and aiding Romulus Augusts with his atrocities, all for the sake of empowering himself.
Final Verdict?
He's a friggin Nazi with the assistance of an Alien in taking over the world, and is basically City of Heroes' answer to the Red Skull. What did you expect?
