Needs Help: Outnumbered Sibling

Outnumbered Sibling is a trope that discusses many possible meanings and patterns in the description, but in practice... incorporates almost none of them.

In my Outnumbered Wick Check, out of 50 wicks, 40 of those wicks went into the "character has siblings with no other meaning" folder. That's 80%.

There's some patterns that popped up in the top folder, but a lot of them can either be folded into pre-existing tropes (such as I Have Brothers) or yarded in the TLP. I think the best thing to do here is cut and disambig. Other people at the meta thread suggested some other solutions, such as a retool to focus on a specific meaning.

I am good with disambiguating.

So, between what? Does The One Guy work when the group is Siblings?

Sure, why not?

Is the Distaff Counterpart, The Smurfette Principle, as it says? Or does Smurfette only work with Main Character groups as its laconic implies is correct?

I'm pretty sure that one is per-cast rather than per-group, but I'm not 100% sure.

I did suggest remaking it into something like Sibling Dynamics Angst, but if there aren't enough examples that fit, then that can be yarded and this one disambiguated.

Right. There's definitely a trope here where a male character has only female siblings (or vice versa) and it is used as a source of annoyance for the character or used to justify character traits (e.g., In Touch with His Feminine Side because his sisters used him for dress up growing up or a Tomboy because they only have siblings. I guess a supertrope to I Have Brothers). But if none of the examples have enough there, then I say cut and yard.

Agreed. I can think of The Loud House off the top of my head, and I'm sure there's more.

“Used to justify character traits” is covered by I Have Brothers, but I definitely agree “feels left out of stuff because of gender ratio/resents being the only guy/girl” is yardable.

Didn't notice that I Have Brothers wasn't just women/girl specific. So yeah, then just the angsty bits of being the odd man out gender-wise in a sibling group.

Yeah, the angsty stuff is a totally valid trope idea, just not one covered very well by the current example selection.

Why disambig instead of cut and clean up?

Because there's some concepts that we're discussing currently that cover a lot of the misuse, we can split off at least one more through TLP, and it has about 2,900 inbounds, which isn't a lot but probably too much to just abandon entirely.

I don't remember the last time we just straight up cut something without preserving it in some form, TBH.

Still, that was a not-thriving non-trope and this is something that can be spun into something more useful.

So, before I make a crowner: I Have Brothers and The One Guy (not sure about including that one as that's a main cast trope) are our two disambig options currently right?

I guess we can fit in A Boy, a Girl, and a Baby Family in there too.
