Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

It's not a very intuitive place for it, though, unless in this case we mean "respond" as in "complaining that it's not there yet".

Administrivia. This Is A Wiki actually used to be a redirect to Administrivia.Repair Dont Respond instead of being a separate page. I'm pretty sure it was this thread that separated the former from the latter.

I think it can be moved from that page to here.

So, based on a recent case involving unilateral punctuation changes, I thought I'd bring the subject of American and Commonwealth Spellings' name and text back up. More specifically, the page fails to mention punctuation differences between different varieties of English. (And I had the small nitpick that the Republic of Ireland is neither American nor Commonwealth despite using the latter's spellings.)

National Varieties Of English was suggested as a new name for a revised version of the page.

Edit: Oh, right, and I forgot about the Sandbox.Outdated Pages addition I made regarding moving Main.Image Pickin to Administrivia.Image Pickin (the latter for parity with Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop's namespace).

Update: I brought up the punctuation stuff with the other mods and updating Text-Formatting Rules was suggested, and Regional Varieties Of English was suggested as another possible new name for American and Commonwealth Spellings (and the compromise I proposed for the latter is that whichever one we don't use between "National" and "Regional" would be a redirect).

I like Regional Varieties Of English so far, but I wonder if alternative spellings in the "same variety" of English, punctuation standards in other languages, and foreign names with no official English spelling are also covered by the "Don't change it if you can't argue it's inherently better" policy.

I don't think punctuation standards in other languages would even be allowed except on translation projects' pages. For example, an article in English shouldn't follow the French standard of putting spaces before exclamation points and question marks or the quotation mark standards of any language that doesn't use the same type of quotation marks as English.

And we do have the policy of the most recent translation of a non-English work taking priority (with unofficial spellings being allowed if there aren't any official ones), but I don't know if it's actually written down anywhere.

Edit: Oh, but we should have something addressing the fact that different English-speaking countries have different date formats, such as Month/Day/Year for North America and Day/Month/Year elsewhere.

[up][up] Your pothole to Spell My Name With An S is inaccurate. That's not the trope you're looking for.

Because that's not what the trope is. The trope is when there are multiple official spellings. Sandbox for the misuse.

I apologize and now I see the confusion.

Still, my point was that work pages for Chinese/Japanese/Greek works sometimes have unannounced edits for character names and terminology, so I think the "don't change the name spelling without a discussion" can apply.

Tv Tropes Forum seems very... weird. Especially the part where it's saying what each thread "is" for.

Trope Talk is for discussing if tropes are "good and bad"? Since when?

And Wiki Talk is never used for discussing tropes, just the wiki itself.

Projects Short Term is just "A place to start cleanup projects in general", apparently. I know what it means, but really?

And World Building only says "Feeling Creative?".

I don't use the other forums so IDK how accurate or not those ones are, but... yeesh.

Oh, and it has a weird trope section at the bottom.

I found it on the bottom of the forums a few days ago and updated it because I wasn't listed as the Wiki Talk herald. I personally don't care for the trope section but eh. The forum sections definitely need some minor rewriting for accuracy though.

Opinion: Maybe the contents of Family Friendliness can be copied to No Lewdness, No Prudishness (or kept as Administrivia.Family Friendly) and the coding team can be asked to remove the redirect from the page later.

Crossposting from the moderation thread.

I just massively expanded The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours with detailed guidelines, after the pithy opening section which I respect but I feel could be more clear. Is there anything that needs clarification or causes alarm?

The fact that you are the creator of a work gives you no special rights over how that work is handled on this wiki. The fic (song, video, comic, whatever) is yours, but the articles published here are ours. When you publicly published your work, you released it into the world to be read, remarked on, and analysed. Just as you are free to claim ownership on your fiction, we are claiming ownership on our analysis of your story.

Because they are our articles, you do not have the right to remove examples of tropes that we found in your story. You do not have the right to add tropes that you intended to occur in the story, until those examples actually happen in the published work. You do not have any right to expect that our editors will submit their edits to you for pre-approval or demand edits on your behalf from your fans.

Please do not even request that we cut a page on your work. Just because you wish to disown your work or you changed your mind about publishing, it does not give you the right to throw away our efforts at cataloguing examples of tropes. Especially if the work is still publicly accessible.

This policy applies to any type of work, not just fanfics. For guidance on how to make an article about a specific creator, see Creator Page Guidelines.

~Redmess (And it saves me time posting this thread's link there) Re: The Troping Code, It being literally the website motto I don't feel the need to expand it, technically every other rule grew from it in some way. But I could say, "keeps us from having a lot of rules"... one glace and the length of Administrivia should say how's that going.
