Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

Sure. There's an adjusted version of that under the opening paragraph on How to Create a Work Page. I felt the notifier thing was too much info.

Given this ATT, I wonder if it would be a good idea to expand our description requirements on How to Create a Character Page beyond the current "...a short summary is fine".

It appears to be a recurring problem that certain character pages involve long, overly-detailed descriptions which bloat the page (and in some cases near Walkthrough Mode) and maybe having a more thorough policy would help get this issue under control. Especially since, like the situation mentioned in the ATT, there are tropers fighting the consensus to shorten descriptions.

I don't have time at the moment to propose a new paragraph, but in a few hours I can write something if others think this would be a good idea. My general points would be (but also open to other ideas or things I missed):

  • No stats (rarity, class, etc.)
  • No information considered trivia (birthday, nationality, favorite X)
  • Limit to 1-2 short paragraphs

If the character has been up to a lot of stuff (Long Runner work, numerous storylines, long lived), I can excuse a lengthier description. And people will probably fight over what "short" allows if implemented.

Here's a (several hours late) first rough draft for my proposal. I tried not to focus too much on the definition of "short" sine it's in contention, just reused the verbiage already there.

Each character should have their own description in the folder. While it is necessary to provide context to the tropes, the description should not be overly long, nor should it be written as a progression guide. We here at TVTropes are not interested in a character's stats, their favorite things, abilities, nor their birthday. Unless it is needed to contextualize an example, that information is best left to other wikis, and if it is pertinent, it should be in the relevant trope's example text, not the description. A short summary that familiarizes the reader with the character's basic premise will suffice.

I like it. [tup] Since it's been a few days with no objections, I think it's okay to paste it into point 2.

[up]Fixed it. Apologies for the delay.

When I trimmed Needs an Index to be a soft-redirect to that forum thread, I didn't think to check the Related page to see if there were any cases of both being linked to separately on the same page, but since that's at least one case of that happening (or was before you caught it), it might be worth looking.

An ATT today was looking for Image Pickin' Special Cases and had trouble finding it. It's surprising that neither How to Pick a Good Image nor Image Pickin' has a link there.

Re: ~Mrph1 [1]. Do we need to add a note to How to Create a Work Page and How to Create a Character Page?

  • Do not add disclaimers alike "the character sheet is under construction" or "the page is work in progress". This Is a Wiki and articles can never be "complete". As long as the page is not a stub, it's considered good enough, and tropers can expand it any time. We don't want to leave an impression that a page is "half-finished" and calls for action, and we don't allow tropers to claim ownership of how a page develops. If you're planning something major that doesn't need to be in public space, you can always create a temporary Sandbox/ page.

Character Sheet Template should be updated to be in line with How to Create a Character Page. Right now it lacks the template for the folder and the character quote. It also includes a 'Tropes'-bar between the description and the trope list, which I've rarely seen and don't think is necessary.

Should we add "bad moods" to Please Trope Responsibly? (This is just a normal bad mood; not a psychological condition or an acute crisis).

Because, just recently, someone online (not on TVT, but still) lashed out and me and used "I was in a bad mood" as an excuse.

Honestly, you know what we need? An administrivia page that's basically a template for a "'No Recent Examples' tag".

I brought it up here but basically the template looks like this:

%% Per Administrivia/NoRecentExamplesPlease, do not add [Trope] until [X] months/days/weeks after the episode's release (Month Date, Year).

Just plug the work's release date into a time and date calculator and add [X] number of months/days/weeks to it in accordance to the No Recent Examples, Please! page.

Does that need a page? Can't it just be added to the NREP thread's OP?

An icon was never added to the engineer section to Know the Staff, and pending the creation of an engineer badge whenever the badge shop is brought back, I added the wrench icon.

I used a screenshot of how it appears on the site (plus transparency added, though it might need a quality upgrade, since I'm not sure that I did the best job) partially because I'm not sure if I have a copy of the font the site uses for emojis (as opposed to it being a web font) and I'm too lazy to check, and partially because if I am able to replicate the look, I'd have to deal with getting the shade of blue right, which is also something I'm too lazy to do.

As with the image I uploaded for the ellipsis button used to holler, I uploaded the image at 100x100 since I'm not sure if support for smaller images was added back to the site (the badges and the old holler icon were smaller than what was allowed when I uploaded an image of the ellipsis button), but resized it to 32x32 for parity with the other icons. One reason I suspect this maybe a stopgap unless/until someone uploads a quality upgrade is that the edges are a bit pixelated, though I suspect that's a result of font smoothing being applied to the emoji, rather than any other kind of quality issue. That said, it doesn't appear to be as noticeable at the size it's displayed at on the page.

[up] Did a quality upgrade. (Zoomed in on the icon as far as I could, screenshotted it, then used Instant Alpha to remove the background to make it transparent)

Here it is at full size (it's shrunken on the actual page):
