Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment - Violations, misuse, and other issues

Go To

The Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment exists to prevent tropers from making agenda-based edits or bringing up irrelevant controversial issues, but it's not always obvious if something breaks the rule or not. This thread serves the purposes of:

  • Getting consensus on cutting overly controversial edits.
  • Rewriting biased examples to be more neutral.
  • Pre-emptively clarifying if a possible example actually violates the rule, or if it's okay to add.
  • Making sure that the rule isn't just being used as an excuse to write a Zero-Context Example ("Some people think that X is Y, and that's all we have to say about it.")

See also the thread "Trump and ROCEJ" for the specific topic of tropers sneaking their political views (not just views regarding Donald Trump, despite the title) onto the wiki.

See Pages Attracting Edits That Promote Bigotry for pages that attract ROCEJ violations that are bigoted in nature.

You have to take it to the Video Moderation thread. Only mods can delete or edit videos (that they didn't upload).

Regarding Political Correctness Gone Mad's quotes page, I torched the Real Life folder because that trope is NRLEP. I didn't check whether the quote being discussed was in that folder, but if any other folders have quotes that aren't from a fictional source (such as if they're about a work of fiction rather than from a work of fiction), delete those as well.

Political Correctness Gone Mad is listed on P to R. I know stuff like taking things out of context to shit on them exists, but when most people think of Political Correctness, they think of getting pissy over really minor things, and I think that's what the example was referring to. I feel like listing it on Truth in Television is a ROCEJ landmine. As the Unfortunate Implications page mentioned, whether such a thing as being too PC even exists is a very touchy subject. Not to mention the example writeup is even more half-assed than a ROCEJ pothole.

Should I nuke it?

I found this on Trivia.Paw Patrol of all places. Pretty blatantly makes the wiki take a stance on the issue.

  • Breaking News Interruption: On March 14, 2018, Nickelodeon, as well as most Viacom networks, interrupted a re-run of "Pups Save a Baby Humdinger/Pups Save a Piñata" to go off-air in support of the National Walk-Out that day. Parents were not too pleased, which led to a controversy on Twitter, during which one user had this to say:
"Your kids can miss 17 minutes of PAW Patrol for the 17 families who lost their kids."

I mean, tbf, as much as I agree, that part's not really relevant to the actual example. You can just cut everything that starts from "parents weren't pleased".

Now, if we had a trope about owning Karens, on the other hand...

This is on Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids under Values Resonance (Questionable part italicized):

  • Bill Cosby's closing monologue in Double Cross cautions viewers to take racists seriously before they get powerful and influential enough to become a serious threat. And not be fooled by racists and bigots who are targeting some other group but seem to be leaving yours alone. He was probably referring indirectly to the famous passage by Martin Niemöller that begins with "First they came...". While many right wing groups do use token minorities to further propagate their message, many left wing groups and people do as well without worldly exprience such as Black Lives Matter in which the vast majority of funds go to the group and not to black people. The concept still rings true but must be understood from all sides of the political spectrum not just conservatives.

I have been considering a page on Antoons. I'm aware of who he is, what he has done, which I can't deny is shitty, but pretty sure his animated works are still tropable (Character Defbed videos and other parodies) and he has also done game dev stuff. That said, his comics are practically Stonetoss-level right-wing political and likely shouldn't be troped. Would it be appropriate to have the page with a note like this? Would also link to his Youtube channel and Newgrounds, but not to his site.

NOTE: Please keep this page limited to Anton's web cartoons and video game work. His comics are no more tropable than other political webcomics of this sort.

Please do not also directly link to his website which hosts them. (this part commented-out).

[up] I think we cut Louder With Crowder despite it being tropable due to it also being a ROCEJ magnet, so I'd say no, Antoons shouldn't have a page.

Furthermore I fear it will attract ROCEJ-breaking tropers to this site that we don't want.

That guy was mostly cut because it lacked content beyond politics and had no tropeworthy fiction (which yes, i can admit a year later). Antoons' Youtube/Newgrounds content largely consists of animation with fictional characters, animation history, and video-game stuff. Some of it is definitely offensive and I see your point, but I was considering the content could be tropable w/o the comics and with that note. if I should write the note differently, feedback there would help as well.

I googled 'Antoons comics' because I was unfamiliar.

First result was 'THEN - "Gay rights!" NOW - "Trans rights!" FUTURE - "Pedo rights!"'

Second result was a joke about trans people killing themselves.

Absolutely no, strongly opposed to a page for Antoons.

Again, the page as intended would not cover the comics. Only the animations/game stuff. He started the former in 2020 and the latter in 2014 or so. That's why I wanted the note.

I wholly understand that but remain strongly of the opinion that we shouldn't create a page for him anyway.

Looking at the edits of the guy who added that agenda-based rant onto the Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids page, and brought this "Here's some food for thought: Why don't white people who project systemic racism give up their money to minorities? Oh wait, yeah its because there all liberals." onto the Pocahontas page and they've been on a roll, they added something to the Fatal Attraction YMMV about how the female lead stalking the protagonist is not Values Dissonance, but would still be considered 'moot' today, because... uh, social media favors women, and... Me Too... and... reasons.

Back in 2019, they also removed mentions of a Muslim family from the YMMV page for The Proud Family, as well as adding to an example to claim that Islam is incompatible with Western culture (see here)

The episode, “Culture Shock” can hit a little close to home for any Muslim viewers, despite the religion of Islam being quite incompatible with Western culture.

Wow that's pretty bad. Has this edit been reverted yet?

I get wanting to make a page for Antoons'... non-political stuff, but I feel like inevitably people will add tropes about the... political comics. It'd feel whitewashy to ignore it entirely anyway.

Alright. Maybe it's not worth having a creator page on such a controversial figure even with a. note, then. The tropable stuff can probably have its own pages, like WebAnimation.Mr Sneaks, WebAnimation.Fast Food Anime, and VideoGame.Survival Of The Fetus, where it's likely to cause less trouble.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but this bolded section was added to Creators on the Autism Spectrum:

  • Dan Aykroyd initially claimed in a 2004 interview to have been diagnosed with Asperger's, as well as Tourette's, as a preteen in the 1960s (before the former term was even coined) with the interviewer suspecting he may have been joking, but later changed his story and said he was self-diagnosed. Either way, he now considers his childhood obsession with ghosts, which helped him to write Ghostbusters, to have been a symptom of his condition. He's also demonstrated a tendency to miss social cues in conversations, skipping over introductions and talking over others to speak at length on material he prepared ahead of time. It takes an interviewer of some skill to get in edgewise and get him to branch off into different topics.

Unless this is cited as something Aykroyd remarked about himself, this feels inappropriately personal, like it's psychoanalyzing the behavior of a real-life celebrity.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
