Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

[tup] to Harrow and Piccolo (or flute)

I had considered Sarov when I proposed Yassen and The Gentleman, but his goal has the side effect irradiating Europe, which he even acknowledges. I thought that would be too bastardly, and I still do, so I'll abstain.

Speaking of Alex Rider, might Mrs. Jones count? She has no problem sending a teenager to dangerous missions, though she at least cares about Alex's well being. Blunt's a jerk, so he isn't one.

I'll admit I'm still a bit reluctant on Piccolo since him being a bastard ends very early in the story and he's firmly a good guy for most of the story (which is also where a lot of his more magnificent moments come from). Count me as an abstain for now.

[up]While it's true that Piccolo isn't quite as much of a bastard as he was early in the story, I have to admit I don't see the issue there.

In the Saiyan Saga, he not only has the sense of proposing to fight alongside Goku to take Raditz out, he correctly sees Gohan's potential as something useful for the incoming fight against Vegeta and Nappa, trains him accordingly, takes preventive measures against the Saiyans and his leadership coordinates his efforts with Krillin and Gohan to land a few good hits on Nappa. Among other things, Piccolo was a key factor to the Saiyans' defeat, and he was very much a bastard back then.

Add to that his two morally sketchy actions in the Boo Saga, which is arguably his most magnificent arc, and I'd say he does enough on both accounts.

[tup] for Piccolo. I knew he was worthy of this trope. That said, this will make MB Versus CM a lot more messy, given how many of the latter he fights.

Well we expanded the MB definition to allow antiheroes and combat strategists.

I actually think early Piccolo has trouble counting, as the entire arc was Goku thwarting and dissecting every one of his plans. It was clear he was less experienced than his father and prone to making decisions. Not to mention being maniacal and Ax-Crazy.

It's Z where he calms tf down and gains a cool stoic attitude, while still being morally dubious enough (he's still technically evil up until Namek Saga), where he is a much stronger keeper than he was as a straight villain.

Tentative yes to Piccolo. My only potential reservation is that he doesn't really do anything that bad after the Piccolo Jr. Saga (where he does nothing ingenious enough to count). He is a lot more mature, cool and calculated in Z but the only bad thing he does is kill Goku which he had to do to kill Raditz (a Planet Looter who was going to kill him, Goku, kid Gohan and everyone on the Earth).

Okay so talked to J and he said that its a good time so here my EP from season 4 of Bob's Burgers, the episode "Presto Tina-O" so let us talk about.

What’s The Work?

"Presto Tina-o" is the 10th episode of Season 4. The episode plots are that Bob gets cursed by a magician while his daughter Tina competes in the Magician talent show and the magician who cursed Bob and hosting the magician talent show is my candidate Mars Sazerac.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Mars Sazerac is the magician whose hosting a magician contest Tina and Pesto Jr. compete in. Mars would also eat at his restaurant when he sees the 50% off for magicians where he charm Bob and his family by performing magic tricks at his restaurant impressing Bob and convincing him to let his friends eat at Bob’s restaurant .

However when Mars and his friend eat at Bob’s restaurant, Mars takes advantage of the 50% discount and only orders the fries and shares it with his friends where Mars uses the fries to perform magic to his friends and customers, much to Bobs frustration since Mars hasn’t ordered anything else and decides to kick Mars off his restaurant.

This results in Mars deciding to curse Bob by putting his name in the “Enemies of Magic” book, resulting in many magic related mishaps occurring in Bob’s restaurant such as napkins popping out of his napkin holder, colorful rope attached to a dollar and glass stacking themselves up on their own.

Eventually Bob decides to attempt to break from Mars’ curse by ripping the page containing his name from Mars book while also licking the salami on Mars’ plate and putting one of the licked salami inside Mars book, while Louise steals Mars book.

However it would be reveal through a note written by Mars, that he knew Bob would try to rip his name out of his book and lick his cold-cuts and allowed Louise to steal his book so that Mars could prank Bob one final time by saying that he farted on the cold-cuts Bob licked on, much to Bob’s disgust.

Is He Intelligent? Is He Charismatic?

As a magician, Mars proves himself to be very cunning and charismatic having charmed Bob, his family and customers with his magic, while successfully cursing Bob and eventually pulls a Batman Gambit on Bob knowing that Bob would try to rip a page from his book and allowing Louise to steal his book and giving it to Bob which works just as Mars planned while never having lost his charm and getting away with his deeds.

What’s The Competition Like?

For a one-shot villain Mars proves himself to be very impressive not only being one of the only few to have gotten away with his dastardly deeds, but how he’s able to use the cunning and manipulative Louise as an Unwitting Pawn to pull off his Batman Gambit against Bob, so yeah he’s clears here.

Is He a Bastard? Is He Too Much of a Bastard?

Well Mars does take advantage of Bob’s 50% off discount by having all his friends over at Bob’s restaurant and only ordering French fries, curses Bob when the latter tries kicking him out resulting in magic-related mishaps Bob has to deal with all day, possibly breaking into his restaurant without Bob noticing to make his curse work, and writes on his note that he farted on the salami plate Bob licked on, so yeah Mars is enough of a bastard methinks.

That said Mars is never shown to go overboard with his antic as he only just curses Bob and the curse he inflicts on Bob is really just harmless annoyances and not life threatening, gets along with everyone else even giving Bob’s daughter and Jimmy Jr. an award for best chemistry and in his note it only said that he farted on the Salami and he’s never shown actually doing the deed so yeah, not too much of a bastard.

Final Verdict?

I will leave it to you guys.

[tup] the Captain, Harrow, Sarov, and Piccolo Jr.

Well after Nightburn we have this more minor character for Wild ARMs 5, the TV producer and reporter Duo.

Who is Duo and what does he do?

Duo is a famous Veruni TV producer and reporter in Laila Belle, the biggest city and capital of entertainment in the land. A man looking for the newest scope, Duo is far more ambitious then he first appears as a floozy entertainment mogul. Working with his race, Duo is also the main producer of Nightburn's commercials and marketing, responsible in helping the man's image to the humans in luring people in the Veruni's servitude. Doing this for a while, Duo didn't seem much different from his race until his cameras end up catching Dean, Rebecca, and Avril during their entrance test to enter the Golem Hunters Guild.

Witnessing the skills and power Dean and Rebecca showed, and realizing who Avril is, Duo approached the group in the prospect to make Rebecca a star entertainer, unknown to them it was a trap and they end up in a gladiatorial fight against monsters the studio's mechs for the Veruni entertainment in Nightburn's suggestion. Observing Avril to confirm her identity and probing Rebecca's talent, Duo is impress by them but unfortunately due to Persephone not liking her act he is force to reject. However while seemingly at their side, Duo felt disguisted with his companions due to how they hide the truth through censorship, but because of the Veruni's control he has no choice to comply for the time being, particularly for Nightburn. But with Avril's presence as the Ice Queen, Duo hatched a plan to get back on his companions and reveal the truth about the Veruni and Nightburn to the word for his personal view to the truth.

Using his cameras, he knew with Avril's presence she would bring forth the wrath of the Veruni's Radical being their primary target and like he predicted it worked. When the group decide to investigate Mt. Chug Chug to solve the slavery situation in the mines, the group end up confronting Nightburn and end up forcing him to admit his whole story and the facade the Veruni has been using with him. This got the humans to rebel against the Veruni, with Duo satisfied that the truth has come out regardless of what happen. As thanks for giving him the chance, Duo meets the group in person when they return in Honeysday where he thanks them before guiding them to find Johnny Appleseed, the figure Avril has been looking for at the start.

Now having set the stage, Duo then stays behind the scene using his connection as TV Producer to record and show the many extreme actions the Veruni Radical's have started, even at the amidst of being attacked, before reuniting with a returning Nightburn and reform Persephone to genuinely inspire the humans to fight back with a display of them fighting of Volsung's army before seemingly working with the newly united Veruni and humans to maintain there new bond.

Is he Magnificent?

Duo is not only a master entertainment manager being one of the key players in rising Nightburn's glamorous image to the humans and status as an icon through his marketing and production skills, but he's also an incredibly crafty reporter who will use any opportunity to further his goals. Whether that be using Rebecca's dream to be entertainment to set her and Dean's group up for a show where they end up fighting monsters for the amusement of the Veruni spectators, or even using his multiple cameras to follow the group behind their back as part of his plan to expose the truth with Nightburn and the Veruni to the public.

In the end out of his personal disdain with his fellow people, Duo ultimately is the one responsible pushing a fightback to the humans against the Veruni with his clever use of the party having the right instinct they would figure out Nightburn's system and using his tech to record and show it to the world in his show, blindsiding the Veruni through his seeming indifference and pushing back Volsung's radicals movement.

Too Much of a Bastard:

Duo is a shrewed and opportunistic schemer, and has no qualms potentially embarrassing and using others for his purposes as seen when he took advantage of Dean and Rebecca's wide-eye view of his business for a gladiatorial show for the Verunis, though secretly it was to actually investigate Avril. He also has no problems revealing secrets that would cause riots around the nation, as seen when he also secretly expose the truth of Nightburn and his confrontation with the group to cause an outrage among the humans to the Veruni further intensify the conflict though necessary to stop Volsung's plans. Hell, he even outright said he doesn't care in general what happens to whoever, as long as he gets the truth revealed.

That said, Duo ultimately does his shady actions for thing he believes is best for everyone and his own code of honor about the truth, secretly disliking the people around him like Nightburn, disguisted that they even don't try to show respect to the people who admire them and was willing to threaten to expose their true selves. Duo may use people, but as seen in Rebecca's audition, while he was never planning to turn her into a star, he did still respect the performance she made and complimented her gunslinging despite being so young and does side with Dean's group by the end of the game after believing Volsung has gone too far.

Duo is a completely a shady entertainment bigwig but he's ultimately one with good intentions and class to even those he's using.

Final Verdict:

Pretty minor, but considering what he manages to accomplish in his pretty limited screentime, I say he keeps.

Edit here real quick. It's somewhat deflating to do an EP thinking it would be a good time with no others on the page, only to come back from writing it with two others there. Oh well, hopefully it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Yes to Piccolo Jr.

Anyways, I'm dipping my toes into Warhammer 40K for the first time and have one I want to do from one of the setting's tabletop roleplaying games, namely Rogue Trader. In this RPG, the players take on the role of an eponymous Rogue Trader and their top officers. Like all Rogue Traders, the players were gifted a Warrant of Trade by the Imperium of Man to comb the furthest reaches of Imperial space to bring untold wealth to mankind. They are allowed to do things most would deem heretical such as make trade deals with xenos (aliens) and traffic artifacts normally illegal in the Imperium. Taking place in the mostly wild and unmapped Koronus Expanse normally cut off by giant Warp storms, players set out to make their fortune or die trying...or an even worse fate. My candidate today is considered by many to be the Archetypal Rogue Trader.

Who is Aspyce Chorda?

Aspyce Chorda is everything one imagines when they think about what it means to be a Rogue Trader. She is ruthless, cunning, and absolutely unerring in her goal to expand her power and wealth no matter the cost. The only daughter of the Patriarch of House Chorda and hailing from a long line of famous ship captains and privateers, Aspyce new from a young age her family was on the wane do to her father's philanthropic ways and tendency to father countless bastard children. This lifestyle brought her to random fits of mania and melancholy that were ironed out into a cruel cunning when she joined the Imperial Navy as an officer at the tender age of 11. She earned great respect from her peers and great fear from her subordinates when her acute lack of empathy earned her a great many victories at the cost of her crew's welfare. Later granted the title of Lord-Captain and granted her own ship, that taste of power caused her to go after and defeat pirate normally beyond her station's capabilities and eventually began extorting protection money from merchants and slipping their locations to pirates if they didn't comply.

Before her actions could be looked into too much, she received a summons from home and learned her father and his flagship had disappeared and were presumed dead and the Chorda family Warrant was suspended until an heir could be chosen. With the full sad state of her family's fortunes now known to her, Aspyce made her move to acquire her birthright. Aspyce called upon the many favors she had made in her time in the Navy to accumulate a mountain of "evidence" that all the other potential heirs were criminals and heretics. As they fled arrest, Aspyce courageously volunteered to bring them into custody. One by one she tracked them down and forced them to give up their rights as heir and placed in cryovaults rather than be handed over to the Inquisition. Once her hunt was done, she found the Chorda Warrant of Trade in her possession. Her purge was not yet done, however, and Aspyce hired assassins to murder all of her father's mistresses and bastard children to eliminate the financial obligations towards them. With that taken care of, she moved her operations to the untold treasures of the Koronus Expanse.

Dressed in highly stylized and ornate uniforms adorned with medals, ribbons, and religious iconography, Aspyce conveys an image of power and piety while standing aboard the bridge of her massive cruiser Implacable Flame. Her fleet differs from most Rogue Trader's in that it leans more towards fast moving ships that can haul small hoards of highly valuable and illegal merchandise while being maneuverable enough to outrun potential pursuers. Among her fleets, she demands well dressed crew and ornately detailed ships and is not afraid to dole out a hundred lashes to crew members who don't live up to her high grooming standards. Unsurprisingly, this blend of form and function elicits both fear and respect from other Rogue Traders. As for her actual business, Aspyce keeps up the charade of legality by participating heavily in the arms trade and the fast transport of luxury items. This allows her to keep innumerable contacts and favors in the Imperial Nobility which she is not afraid to make use of.

Of course, no Rogue Trader would be complete without a hand in very illegal and heretical ventures. Aspyce is perhaps the most aggressive Cold Trader in the Expanse and a full third of her wealth comes from that business, being the acquisition and sell of dangerous xenos artifacts. She employs armies of scribes to pour over texts and maps to find the next big discovery and sells her artifacts through proxies and fronts, all the while bribing highly placed members of the Imperium to hamper investigations into her activities. Perhaps the most valuable items in her trove are truly complete star charts of the Koronus Expanse, worth untold riches themselves and giving her a major advantage over all her peers. Her current main endeavor is driving her even wealthier rival Calligos Winterscale from his operations on the ice world of Lucin's Breath. This planet has a purple gas called Nephium held in extreme value for its unique properties. Aspyce wages a proxy war with the Winterscale Dynasty and has her agents sabotage his mines, and drops specialized extractors from orbit onto nephium sinkholes worked by captured pirates and enslaved business rivals. The epitome of brutal efficiency just like Aspyce, these vaults hold no escape for the prisoners and any who refuse to work can have their generator shut off remotely to freeze to death.

Is she magnificent?

Aspyce is a ruthless trader with a practical brutality that always keeps her moving towards ever greater wealth and power. She is a brilliant figure in securing this power and has a domineering force of personality best exemplified in how she carries herself and her ships and crews. She's certainly got the guile and style for this.

Is she a bitch?

Absolutely. In truth, she is held up as an example to be followed by players if they want to succeed in their own ventures in this grimdark universe. As awful and brutal as Aspyce can be, is has to be remembered this is fairly par of the course for Warhammer 40K and she really isn't all that bad compared to some characters in the setting.

Final Verdict?

I'm saying [tup] here. How about you guys?

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

Fucking glut of effortposts here so I'm gonna limit myself to a "yes" to Aspyce, Duo, and of course to Harrow. I'll get Khonshu up tomorrow—can we not over-inundate the thread with posts again?

[tup] Aspyce

Not sure on Marc mainly because it is Bob's Burger, not the most confident in those type of series.

To be honest, I was refreshing the subpage to see if anyone else made an EP, and I only saw G's so I thought it was fine if there was just one other EP, but well this happen. Honestly it seems like bad timing because we literally posted these 10 minutes apart with all three of us.

Tentative write-up for Sarov:

  • General Alexei Sarov was an esteemed commander in the Russian army, who has become disillusioned with the end of the Cold War and the suffering of his people. Introduced as he coolly outwits and kills two mercenaries who try to blackmail him, Sarov plans to overthrow the corrupt Russian president and lead his country to become the dominant power in the world. Inviting the president to dinner, Sarov has him drugged and steals his plane, planning to trigger the explosion of a hazardous site of nuclear submarines, then release a doctored video to make the president appear indifferent to the crisis, which will spark an uprising and drive the president from power. With a genuine respect for Alex Rider, who he sees as a surrogate son, Sarov is charming and witty even to his enemies, and handles his defeat with composure, calmly bidding Alex good-bye before shooting himself.

With Marc, having seen that episode, somewhat leaning towards "yes," but the farting thing is making me pause.
