This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.
Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:
- If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
- If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
- You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
- Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
- If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
- Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

Good points. I'll make the changes to the check next time I get a chance.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper Wall@8269-8271: The Magnificent Bastard page calls Guile Hero its Good Counterpart, which is presumably wrong.
Yeah that's just a mistake on a part of both tropes' descriptions, but there's nothing wrong with the trope as a whole.
Art Museum Curator and frequent helper of the Web Original deprecation project~Fools Edit Account You are up next on the queue.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallOh, wait I guess I accidentally skipped them? I swore I saw randomtroper89's name first. I'll check the history.
EDIT: Yep, random was first.

Macron's notesWhoops I was wrong.
Nevermind Fools Edit, apologies.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallAs I said elsewhere on the forums, I'm going to take a break from mod work until at least the middle of the week, so hollering will probably need to be done more often. I won't be completely offline (I'll still doing non-mod activities), but I won't be moderating for at least a few days.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I've been noticing prominent TRSers outright deleting examples of tropes/trivia just because they contain wicks to another trope that has been renamed, cut or redefined. Please try not to do this.
Any examples? I'm not doubting that this may be the case, but I haven't seen it happen personally and having some specifics may help us to figure out what's going on.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessAs in like, an entry for Trope A that contains an in-line wick to disambiguated Trope B?
Vehicle-Based Characterization | Grief-Induced Split | Locker MailIf that's been happening, there shouldn't be a problem with restoring the entry without the wick for the page that was sent to TRS. I think most of us use our browsers' "find on page" functions to look for the wick for the page that's being cleaned up, so I'm guessing what happened is that an example that simply contained an inline wick for a TRS'd page was mistaken for an example for the TRS'd page in question due to the text of the bullet point being misread.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.FWIW I never do that. Not sure who is.
If you think I'm doing that Prfnoff, let me know where.

TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallAnd in the event that I accidentally removed an example for the wrong trope/trivia/YMMV at some point, you have my permission to put the example back. (I'm positive this already wouldn't count as and Edit War, but I still felt it was worth mentioning this in the event that I made such a mistake in the past.)

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Updated Sapient Cetaceans Wick Check. How does it look now?
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI think it looks fine. There might be a Missing Supertrope case here if a trope about cetaceans being sapient while otherwise differing very little (if at all) from real life cetaceans is being used to refer to either Funny Animals or cetacean-like aliens.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.what is the Fantasy Character Classes page? it doesn't have any examples, but it's not listed as an exampleless supertrope as far as I'm aware. And it's certainly not an index given it's formatting and lack of indexing. it's kind of written like an analysis page, but it's also not in the analysis space.
i'm asking b/c someone else tried to point this out before, but the thread was immediately closed because "That seems to be too minor an issue to merit a TRS thread." [1]

I agree that it looks more like an Analysis page than a trope, so I wouldn't have a problem with moving it to Analysis.Character Class, similarly to how Triang Relations was moved to Analysis.Love Triangle. Both that page and Triang Relations were made so long ago that their creation predates the current page history, if that matters, plus Triang Relations also had at least one TRS thread shot down before a more recent one was approved.
Similarly to Triang Relations, I'm not sure what a wick check would be looking for since a thread would be about the state of the page itself rather than how it's linked to elsewhere (though this is just my $0.02 and not a mod statement; I'm still taking a break from mod work for a few days, and just posting in an unofficial capacity for now).

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. In the old thread, someone said it seems redundant to Fighter, Mage, Thief and there is a lot of overlap between them, so maybe it can be moved to that trope's analysis page?
Someone on ATT actually brought up Fighter, Mage, Thief as a TRS candidate of it's own—IIRC it was ~Justa Username who did.
JustaUsername—do you still intend to wick check Fighter, Mage, Thief?
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallWhat's the problem with FMT, though?

TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallGot it, thanks!
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300I actually got distracted. I had a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to use Notepad++ to count the pages due to lack of experience with the program and then after that gaming and a busy life came up. I guess maybe a clearer idea how to use Notepad++ or something else to count the numbers my enthusiasm would increase.
Honestly, I feel the issue with Fighter, Mage, Thief is that it's not just a subtrope of Three Approach System, it's also a subtrope to a Missing Supertrope to characters that fall under the "Strength, Sorcery, Finesse" vibe, hence why we have video game characters that don't fall under the Three Approach System despite fitting a similar vibe.
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree. One easier way is to just copy and paste the related page itself into a list randomizer and take the ones that come to the top...
Or you can just scroll around at random like I do.
There's no need to use the more complicated number-generator method if it's not working out
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
This is clearly correct:
This is not a straight example, but it's some form of playing with a trope rather than misuse:
Also, many of the wicks - both ZCEs and with context - seem to actually be referring to Cetacean Aliens, which might technically be misuse but I'm not sure is worth splitting off as a separate concept from portraying Earth cetaceans as intelligent, especially since the description already mentions genetic or technological enhancement (so it's not like this is a trope specifically built around works arguing dolphins are already sapient IRL).
