TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

[up] Is it that difficult to understand the namespacing system or are these people trying? Cut. If the three people who were making that page want to recreate it, they should put it in the Roleplay/ namespace.

Also, I mentioned the Timeline.Donald Trump page in the Trump and ROCEJ clean-up thread.

[up]several: one of the reasons I want a comment for adding a bomb is I remember the old system as well -and jerks who would try to get a draft dumped because they're jerks.

I'd like to avoid the resurgence of old problems as well as the continuation of current problems.

So Actually Real Magic got relaunched. Haven't taken a hard look at the page but given the timeline and the fact the name is still the same, I doubt the issues have been addressed.

Earth Must Stand On Its Own just got launched. It's...well, at best half-baked and based on the comments, and seems more like trying to create a trope to match an example than documenting an actual trope.

The fact the description doesn't even mention Alien Non-Interference Clause, which this might be a downplayed example of.

Of the three examples, one has such horrible Example Indentation and is a "minor underlying theme" to the point I'm not sure it applies.

@waterblap: commenting from my phone, and I was replying to who said there shouldn't be comments asked for on bombs.

I remember the old system, and tropers asking for "false flags" to be removed that were put there either by people not understanding what was going on, being malicious, or thinking it was funny. I'd rather avoid old hassles that caused a lot of pain in the rear end.

Sigh.

The Thousand And One Bottles got launched. With that title. And overwhelming consensus in the YKTTW saying "that's a bad title," and him saying "I'll change the title" and then him... not changing the title. Despite that, eight people threw hats in... meaning eight people said "go ahead and launch." Only one person threw in a bomb.

You understand my frustration here.

I apologize. When someone said that I ought to launch I assumed it was okay. After giving it thought I decided none of the replacement suggestions quite "did it" for me. However, I admit I was wrong, and I'll go with whatever the consensus is.

Okay: I still like "The Thousand And One Bottles," but, seeing as how virtually nobody agrees with me and the trope was shaping up to be about chemistry glassware in general anyway, if anyone still dislikes the original title, my suggestion for a replacement is Flasks Of Colored Liquids, a subtrope of Technicolor Science. How's that?

Similar Item Confusion got launched. It really reminds me of one of Cave Cat's launches back in the day due to its sweeping broadness and poor examples.

Is it fine to call the following (both have four or more votes for these resolutions):

I'm going to update that big list every few pages, I think, unless y'all think I shouldn't.

Newer Stuff:

  • Similar Item Confusion: Send it back. I think it just needs to be made more specific. The two examples in the description (salt and sugar, and flour and flower) aren't the same kind of mistake at all, for example. You wouldn't mistake a rose for flour, but you might mistake salt for sugar.
  • DanganronpaRPForScrunts.Danganronpa RP For Scrunts: So, if we don't get much discussion on this one, I think we should just put it on the cutlist anyway because it has 4 inbounds and is in the wrong namespace. I sent a notifier to the troper who created the page. Should we wait at all before sending it to the chopping block?

Huh, wow. Every example is poorly written and/or a ZCE, it's unindexed, and in the wrong namespace. It has to go for sure... the Characters page is tougher since there actually are some examples on it (clearly some of the R Pers are more competent at troping than others), but when we cut the main page it creates an Orphaned Subpage.

I say cut the main page now. If they remake it in the correct namespace and not a stub, then scrub the characters page of ZC Es and move on. If they don't, then cut the Characters/ page, too.

And yes, please feel free to keep updating that list. It's a huge help.

[up] I'm pretty sure included your votes into the tally I created. There aren't enough votes on any of those issues to bilaterally come to a conclusion. I've created another folder, "Issues with Little or No Response," to address the whole "tl;dr" possibility.

[EDIT: I'm just trying to make this copy-paste-able and not super formal. My brain is just like "no you have to explain it more... no more... no more" so it might be wordy, but the lists are more important IMO than the descriptions.]

This post is an attempt to tally everyone's votes.

If you want to be included in this tally, please use the verbiage in the folder titled "The key to the tallies" (not super formal). (This folder will be updated to reflect common sayings at some point.)

None of the following lists include "reported" tallies. They only include "primary sources," so to speak. Otherwise, we could find ourselves doubling votes very quickly. That said, please do not "re-vote." Feel free to continue the discussion and make sure your point is heard (I won't stop you). If you are unsure of whether your vote was heard, please link to your previous post.

Folderized because there are so many lines!

    open/close all folders

    The key to the tallies
  • c = voted to cut or said/implied this was Not A Trope;
  • sb = send back or "cut and send back" which is the same thing as this;
  • k = voted "keep" or "I'm fine with it";
  • un = unsure, not I'm not sure but they aren't sure ("further discussion needed");
  • n = neutral, they expressed neutrality or abstained for some reason;
  • dv = didn't vote but commented or brought to our attention (please vote);
  • trs = they voted to bring this to TRS, they commented that this was too old for this thread;
  • ??? = I don't know how to count this one, I'm not sure what they voted

    Unresolved Issues (~30)

    Issues with Little or No Response
This folder is for those recently launched tropes that nobody has responded to yet. This is just a summary. These tropes are in the Unresolved Issues folder. Tallies shown in this folder may not be up-to-date (I just copy-pasted these items). Fewer than three votes and/or just no conflicting votes (I don't want to double-up these lists too much).

    Almost Resolved Votes
The list:

What this list is:

These tropes either have four or more votes or only "neutral" votes. They may also be too old for this thread.

We don't have a crowner in this thread, but I think we should only "motion to call" a resolution when it has nearly 2:1 (cut-to-keep ratio, trs-to-keep ratio, keep-to-cut ratio, etc.). Not super formal, but it's something to think of for "neutral" or "keep" decisions.

  • If the only votes are "neutral" or "didn't vote," then I think we can call it after 3. Nobody cares about it so nobody "votes". le shrug
  • This folder is also where "send to TRS" tropes go if they are demonstrably too old for this thread. Vote tallies will be included here, and such tropes will be taken off the Unresolved Issues list.
    • If the trope is both too old and clearly deserving cutting rather than sending to TRS, it may also be on this list.

    Works Brought Up with No Resolution:
This is for non-trope pages brought up in this thread. I add items to the top of this list.

    Resolved:

    Problem Troper Reported (for some reason, was this reported to ATT?):
Once these are resolved, the troper names get taken off and are not archived. We don't need to gossip after the fact, and I'm pretty sure the mods have their own lists for this sort of thing.

    Other Salient Discussions You Can Participate In
I'm not going to summarize what people are saying in these discussions, but I don't want to "overshadow" the non-voting discussions we have here either. Linked comments will be to where the discussion began. You can then work forwards if you want.

  • Meta Discussion: How can we improve the YKTTW system?
  • There was another one, I think, but I can't remember. (Will update.)

On the mera-discussion;

  • When starting a new draft, begin with three "strikes" (bad name, incomplete description, not enough examples)
  • Other tropers can add "bombs" (or some other iconography, like an X for "strikes"), but doing so causes a pop-up:
    • Pop-up says "You do not believe this draft is ready for launch because:"
    • Drop down list of the old tags or new phrases to select from
    • Text box that must have 15 characters typed in it (they must give a reason for "bad name")
    • Attempting to add a second "bomb" presents the same pop-up, allowing you to edit your tag and reason.
  • Three ways to remove tags/bombs
    1. Troper can click their "bomb" out by adding a "hat" (or new iconography) [currently it means one AND the other, my proposal is one OR the other]
    2. A "hat" must address an existing "strike/bomb" (which is why every draft starts with three), and for every two "hats", the oldest "bomb" gets greyed out. Six "hats" (owner plus five) negate the starting three, allowing for a launch.
    3. the draft has a "report" function, and moderator tools can wipe out all bombs and/or hats.
  • Assuming the servers can handle the load, we could just allow drafts not to be discarded except by their owners. If there's a way to transfer ownership, then prevent it from being discarded for a month.

Point #3 is nonsense - we need more bad drafts discarded, not the opposite.

Also, a few ideas that don't require tech changes may be warranted. We are really backlogged on tech changes.

I'm not clear on which point is Point #3 in your response... My last point is the only one to make it harder to discard drafts (because leaving it without bumps for five years is nearly the same as a discard).

Yes, as Septimus said, we don't want something that will make bad or abandoned TL Ps harder to get rid of. We also don't want to encourage the idea that "This TLP is MINE!". The longer something languishes with no activity, the more likely it becomes that someone, thinking that they're helping out by cleaning up old stuff, will revive it and launch it if they think it's ok. And by making the OP the only person who can discard a TLP except the mods, we are very clearly declaring "This belongs to the person who started it."

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.

But as one of the people who take tropes from the TRS to TLP for fixing/relaunching, and because of the different communities, I'm getting bombarded by bombs because what I do is "too similar" to an existing trope, to the point where The Nameless drafts (thread-approved) are discarded. That's why I had to say I couldn't continue working on the Gigantic Moon draft; I'm not invested enough in the concept to continue battling for it.
