Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

[up] Alright, thank you, just added it to Day in the Limelight.

I got two more examples I want to add, except this time they're from Agent Ali. Today's my first time working with "memetic" tropes and I'd like to know if they're sufficient, please. Thanks in advance.

  • Memetic Mutation: Kita Jaga Kita. Explanation

  • Ascended Meme: The movie soundtrack "Kita Jaga Kita" ("We take care of our own"), went viral in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic as Malaysia's theme for fighting against the virus. On 31st August 2020, (Malaysia's 63rd Independence Day), an official music video was released, dedicated to all Malaysians fighting COVID-19. In late 2020, a short titled "Misi: Juang" (Mission: Fight), depicts the characters in a physical fight against the virus, with "Kita Jaga Kita" as the background score.

[up]You're welcome. From the way Memetic Mutation mentions Ascended Meme, if a meme is the latter then it shouldn't be listed as the foremost trope. As for whether or not the AM example counts, I think so, though I'd add what the song's original context was.

Questioning the validity of this example from Characters.Resident Evil Chris Redfield with the way it meanders. It feels like, despite the length, the example isn't actually explaining how Chris is an Anti-Hero.

  • Anti-Hero: And one who's progressively shifted worse on the spectrum after each game. Chris starts as an Ideal Hero in 1 before suffering numerous tragedies (mainly watching his men get gunned down time and time again) that wear him down to the point of being on the verge of becoming a Nominal Hero by the start of 6, only to settle between a Pragmatic Hero and Unscrupulous Hero by the time of 7; being someone still very concerned with protecting innocent lives, but jaded, bitter, and cynical to a large degree. Village finally introduces him by having him murder Mia in cold blood, broken away from the BSAA, and kidnap Rosemary indicating he's undergone a full Face–Heel Turn. Subverted when it eventually turns out that the woman he shot was an impostor, the BSAA has become riddled with corruption and shady bureaucracy, and he was trying to protect Rose and Ethan, albeit with extremely brutal tactics, meaning he's firmly an Unscrupulous Hero.

If the character has the Dull Surprise absolutely all the time 'cause he is complete stoic, would that be a bad example of a Dull Surprise?

Example:

Brad: Dude, you've won a billion dollars! It's awesome!!
Trevor: *with a blank expression and a lifeless voice* Yes, it's achievement for us.

[up][up][up][up] Noted on that my Ascended Meme example should state the initial context of the phrase as well, but Memetic Mutation is YMMV while Ascended Meme apparently isn't. I wouldn't think that it being an Ascended Meme warrants the Memetic Mutation example to be removed but I'll need more feedback on that.

[up][up][up] Not familiar with the game yet I agree that the Anti-Hero example is scattered, like it was added onto with each installment. It should be rewritten to make it as if one person wrote it. Or just Unscrupulous Hero if he fits that subtrope better.

[up][up] Going from what's been discussed since here I'm inclined to agree on Informed Wrongness being a better fit.

[up] Looks valid enough to me. Just keep in mind that Dull Surprise is for the instance of not being as emotive as one would expect while The Stoic is for the character who's rarely emotional.

Well, as a singular instance it's probably fine. But say if Dull Surprises happen very often for this character, you don't have to elaborate every instance of it if the reason's always the same. You can summarise the times it happens, and even mention it as evidence of this guy being The Stoic.

At this point I'll point to Clear, Concise, Witty, which is a mantra applicable for trope titles as well as for writing examples. After that, it's your call whether the example is good or bad.

VideoGame.Kirby And The Forgotten Land:

  • Senseless Sacrifice: Though not the intended reaction, and in fact it probably saved his life, King Dedede staying behind to fight the beast pack so the Waddle Dee can escape is presented as a Heroic Sacrifice, despite the fact that the approaching “army” consists of only a handful of troops and Kirby probably could have taken all of them out easily. He also probably had time to make it back to the elevator rather than just throwing the Waddle Dee back.

This example rubs me the wrong way. I get the point, but the weasel words and word cruft just dim the whole thing, and it feels a bit like "examples are not arguable".

[up]x7 Alright, that's what I thought.

[up] I agree it seems like a shoehorn. The sacrifice is presented as saving the other character's life, so it's not an example. The rest is just speculative.

Working on the TRS rename for Arbitrary Minimum Range and I came across this wick from Lyrical Nanoha that is honestly confusing me a bit, surely because of the wording of the first sentence.

Does Shotoclone require Forward+Down+Down-Forward joystick motions (or at least something like them)? I don't think so, I just want to make sure.

[up] I'm not sure... reading the description the trope makes it seem like its not required but then immediately turns around and says "a "true" Shotoclone also uses the same Quarter-Circle Forward and Dragon Punch (Forward+Down+Down-Forward) joystick motions" so ????

I'm wondering if that description is causing confusion or allowing the trope to have a fairly loose requirement that is leading to misuse.

From YMMV.The Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask

  • Death of the Author: The criticisms to the changes introduced in the 3DS remake tend to take this form. Aonuma, who famously had a Creator Breakdown during the development of the original, replayed the N64 game in the early stages of development of the remake, and created a list of things he saw as mistakes that needed to be fixed. However, many of these changes turned out to be very controversial for fans of the original, with detractors arguing that they made the game as a whole actively worse. The most extreme cases go as far as to say that his Creator Breakdown blinded Aonuma to what made the game so special in the first place.

According to Wikipedia, Death of the Author is the discouragement of "relying on an author's intentions and biography to definitively explain the "ultimate meaning" of a text". Anyone can decide the meaning of his/her work. This case does not encompass the story or the "meaning" of Majoras Mask, just some changes in gameplay. I don't think it counts.

Thoughts?

Correct, Death of the Author is a method of literary criticism, where you ignore the author's stated intent and meaning. I think the example is going for an absent creator trope, but it's not written well enough to be sure.

[up][up]If a trope's name is an already-existing term or whatnot, we're not supposed to use another site to determine what the trope means, just TV Tropes. However, I agree that isn't an example of Death of the Author and more so listing complaints of the game. Hence, I'd cut it.

Found this in Main.The Fettered.

  • Zack State, the Sociopathic Hero of The Mental State, manages to be both this and The Unfettered at the same time. Despite going to great lengths to get what he wants, he does so by sticking to his own philosophies about people. He never harms the truly innocent, he uses temporary punishments to reform the misguided, and he inflicts continuous and unending punishments on those he determines as being 'irredeemable'. He never kills anyone, except in situations in which any form of punishment would achieve nothing (this only happens one time, when his enemy was a psychotic street thug with a predilection for violence). The only time his morals are called into question is when he is confronted by an 'Irredeemable' who also happens to be a good person at heart. He tends to regret having to punish them.
Does the above example qualify for this trope? Do the potholes (Sociopathic Hero and The Unfettered) qualify?

[up]I'm unfamiliar with the work and the Sociopathic Hero entry on its main page is partial-context at best, so I don't know if he counts as a SH or not. I think The Unfettered counts since he's willing to go great lengths to get what he wants, though.

As for whether or not he counts as The Fettered, I'm not too sure, though I'm leaning on "no"; it doesn't seem like they give him strength and weakness. I could be wrong, however.

The Dragon Prince: Xadia

  • Honor Before Reason: Even when presented with the egg containing the dragon prince, Runaan still insists on fulfilling his assassin's vow despite—as Rayla points out—there being no need to average him. The chance for peace the egg's survival presented being immaterial next to completing p the mission of retaliation he was charged with. A decision which ultimatly costs the lives of his fellow assassin's and leads to his capture.

So I have a question about this They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character entry from YMMV.Wednesday:

  • Many enjoyed Xavier's introduction as a tormented artist whose paintings come to life, and as the only Nevermore student who knew Wednesday before her arrival at school thanks to a childhood-bonding over coffin-hide-and-seek. Many were also disappointed by how he was used as a stereotypical love interest, feeling he would have worked better as a friend to Wednesday and had absolutely no romantic chemistry with her.

Does this really fit because it seems like "fans wanted" rather than the show failing to explore an interesting character as they did explore him just not the way fans wanted.

Please note that this trope is about ignored characters with good potential who never receive the spotlight (or do so just once and then get removed or forgotten). It is not about leading characters who are not used the way you would like [...].
