Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?
Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?
Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?
Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.
Useful Tips:
- Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
- Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
- Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
- Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
- Wrong: Badass Adorable
- Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
- When is normally far less important than How.
- A character name is not an explanation.
- Wrong: Full Moon Silhouette: Diana
- Right: Full Moon Silhouette: At the end of her transformation sequence into Moon Princess Misty, Diana is shown flying across the full moon riding a rutabaga.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.
Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.
For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

Ok, how about this?
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall
- While trying to lift Fisher's mood, Mike jokingly suggests [My Game] as a title for a movie. In response, Fisher pretty much dares the players to make Mike's suggestionnote a reality.

i like the second one better, but either will do; they're both valid, so it's down to your preference.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica!I'm actually leaning towards the second one myself, since it references Title Drop like the original. In fact, I think it may really just be the original, but in a form that makes use of links instead of straight text. Of course, if you'd rather there only be one link, we could also get another two examples by just swapping out the discrepant parts. And that's not including any minor tweaks you could come up with.
Alternatively. Instead of swapping out the discrepant parts, we could somehow merge them:
- While trying to lift Fisher's mood, Mike jokingly suggests [My Game] as a title for a movie. In response, Fisher pretty much dares the players to make Mike's suggestion (a movie that shares its name with the game) a reality.
i agree with your opinion in the note. the parenthetical in your third suggestion might be against the Para Bombing guidelines, and even if it's not, it feels more awkward to me.
regarding links, as long as they don't run afoul of the rules at All Blue Entry or Sink Hole, the more the merrier. makes it easier to go on a Wiki Walk, right?

Migrated to Chloe Jessica!From YMMV/DeepSpaceNine
- Seasonal Rot: Season 3 is distinctly weak, due to two factors: the departure of Peter Allan Fields (who was responsible for the first two seasons' best writing), and an increasing reliance on Ferengi-centered comedy episodes. It was back on its feet by season 4, though.
I don't know if this is common enough consensus. I have seen it, but it seems to me season 3 is generally seen as little better than the previous one or about the same. The average IMDB rating is higher (7,6 as oppossed to 7,2, if I counted correctly) and the amount of Ferengi episodes is the same, one of which (House of Quark) is well-liked.
After messing with the permutations, I think I've come up with the best one:
* While trying to lift Fisher's mood, Mike jokingly suggests [My Game] as a title for a movie. In response, Fisher pretty much dares the players to make Mike's suggestion a reality.
looks good to me.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica! From YMMV.F Zero Legend Of Falcon:
- Dork Age: Unlike Pokémon and Kirby (the latter of which it had to directly compete with), the F-Zero anime was not warmly received. The two games based off it failed to match GX's sales combined and Climax in particular sold poorly enough that its international release was halted, the anime's second season never came, the dub was Cut Short, and the franchise was thrown into an indefinite hiatus. The Super Smash Bros. series treats GX as the latest entry, with the Falcon Densetsu/GP Legend line only getting a paltry mention in the chronicle in Brawl.
Can an adaptation be considered a part of the Dork Age for the source?
Edited by Pichu-kun on Aug 7th 2019 at 5:00:07 AM
decidedly not. there's a trope there, but not Dork Age.
e: Canon Discontinuity applies, but i dont think it covers everything listed there. im not sure how to fill the discrepancy.

Migrated to Chloe Jessica!x3 Ok, here it is in it's full, expanded form:
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
- (Irrelevant)
- While trying to lift Fisher's mood, Mike jokingly suggests [My Game] as a title for a movie. In response, Fisher pretty much dares the players to make Mike's suggestion a reality.
Assuming that's up to par, that really only solves half the problem, since The Movie references Title Drop as well, so we'd have to start over with that one.note
- The Movie: Inverted, the game's not based on anything in particular, but during the events mentioned in Title Drop, Fisher indirectly suggests that this may happen to the game at some point in the future.
Edited by Gofastmike on Aug 7th 2019 at 8:13:02 AM
when i went to look up The Movie, i discovered that it only applies to TV series, so we've both been working from a misconception. Video Game Movies would be what applies.
anyway, the example in question isn't a straight example, it's discussed. for it to be played straight, there would have to be an actual movie based on the game (i hope you're that successful with it!). here's my attempt at rewriting it:
Video Game Movies: Discussed. Fisher indirectly suggests that someone may eventually make a movie based on the game's events.
e: the inversion of Video Game Movies would be the Licensed Game.

Migrated to Chloe Jessica!As-is, it seems pretty good, though I'd like it if it were expanded a bit. Hell, your signature mentions Zero Context Examples right up front, so such a task should be trivial.
Though on the subject of VGM, should I go back and change the link up in LotFW as well, or leave it at The Movie?
an entry doesn't have to be lengthy to not be a ZCE; it just has to explain how the trope applies. trying to artificially increase the length of an entry often leads to Word Cruft, so it's best to avoid it.
in regards to your second question, it's technically trivia, not a trope, and the only reason it gets an entry at all is because the characters talk about it. it would be best to just cut the pothole entirely from LotFW.
Edited by razorrozar7 on Aug 7th 2019 at 5:32:36 AM
Migrated to Chloe Jessica! What I meant was that it should be expanded beyond "this person talks about this trope", like how they got there, or what garnered such a remark. It doesn't need to be lengthy, just a bit more detailed. If that's not possible, then maybe it should just be cut?
Edit: Ok, I actually managed to provide a bit more detail without turning it into the premise for a novel:
- Video Game Movies: Discussed. Fisher indirectly suggests that this may happen to the game after Mike suggests it’s title be used for an action movie.
Edited by Gofastmike on Aug 7th 2019 at 10:49:29 AM
"its title", not "it's title". "its" is possessive, "it's" is "it is"
The phrasing "this may happen" is vague and awkward. What may happen?

From the fanfic Fan Fic/Angelofthebat:
- Artistic License – Religion: Pretty much everything Cassandra learns about God and Catholicism is in the Bible and it's even quoted directly a few times (see Author Appeal). No, it's the Seraphim whose perception of the Bible ranges from accurate knowledge of the obscure to batshit insanity.
Found these on Hammerman:
- Invincible Hero: As noted below, Hammerman could do basically anything. Accordingly, a lot of episodes weren't actually about Hammerman trying to defeat a villain so much as they were about Stanley trying to overcome the problem of being unable to transform into Hammerman. Once he did, all opposition folded up like a cheap card table.
- 13 Is Unlucky: The show lasted for thirteen episodes before being canceled.
Do these count? For the former, I'm not sure if restricted access to those superpowers could be considered a weakness. For the latter, this seems like shoehorning and out-of-universe, but may count.
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!I agree with the second one. A lot of shows only last about 13 eps without being renewed. If we count it here then we count it for everything off that type...
13 Is Unlucky is being misused because the show wasn't intentionally 13 episodes long nor is it an intentional reference to the superstition of 13 being unlucky.
Edited by ADrago on Aug 7th 2019 at 8:18:51 AM
"as noted below" is cruft and references another example.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica! If it helps, it's referencing the New Powers as the Plot Demands entry.
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand! It doesn't matter what it's referencing. Examples are supposed to stand alone.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.
if you cut off everything after "...for a movie", it's still a valid example. i misunderstood what you were saying about not meaning The Movie, sorry about that.
