Fixing lewdness issues

Go To

This thread is for cleaning up pages that violate the No Lewdness, No Prudishness policy.

Do not use this thread for reporting pages that need to be cut for violating The Content Policy. Report pages that appear too lewd or gushy to have on the wiki using the "Report Page" button on the sidebar, with the checkbox saying "The page may violate the Content Policy" checked. That will create a thread on the Content Violation Discussions subforum. The thread will be opened by a mod if the report is valid, and if it's deemed necessary, the page will be cleaned according to the Content Policy. (The list of pages that were deemed problematic can be found on The Content Policy's page.)

No Lewdness:

"Lewdness" is more than just being about something sexual or potentially sexual. Here are some signs of lewd writing:

  1. Personal opinions on hotness. Examples should stand on their own without the introduction of YMMV material. Adding your own thoughts and feelings on an example is an opinion, same as calling an example good or bad. Don't do it. Don't try and extend your feelings to a larger group of fans either, e.g. "...and fangirls everywhere rejoiced". You're not fooling anyone.
  2. Overly detailed examples. The example doesn't need to be an exact sensory account of the event. Too much of that and you end up sounding like you're writing porn. When in doubt, drop a few adjectives.
  3. Unrelated fanservice mentions. If the hot bits aren't related to the example, they don't belong in the example.
  4. Pornographic writing. If you're writing porn, it should be somewhere other than the wiki. Keep it Family Friendly.
  5. Titillation links. Tell, don't show. We don't need screen shots to illustrate NSFW fanservice. If a reader is really curious, they can go look it up on Google. (See also Weblinks Are Not Examples.)
  6. Pedo gushing. We don't need to describe children sexually. This should be cut immediately. We're not interested in hosting pedophilia fantasies. Period. If a work contains children having sex, even if portrayed negatively, report it as a potential violation of The Content Policy using the "Report Page" button in the sidebar.
  7. Talking about actors instead of characters. An actor is not the character they play. When you're writing an example about a work, refer to the character, not the actor. This applies to non-sexual references, but too often it's tropers writing about how they find certain actors hot. That doesn't fit in character examples.
  8. Thinking a page with a Not Safe for Work subject is license to be lewd. Even when we discuss porn, we are about just stating the facts.
  9. Fanfic Recs for underage sex. We will not host any recommendation for fics that have explicit sex involving people apparently or actually younger than 16. Period. We categorically do not recommend fics with sex in which at least one participant:
This applies even if all parties are underage.

No Prudishness:

  1. Don't cutlist or gut pages just because they're about sexual topics. Sex exists. It's used in media a lot. You'll just need to cope with that fact. Relationships, fanservice, and sexual activity all fall into their own tropes as a result.
  2. Don't be a Bluenose Bowdlerizer. We're not looking to censor all sex off the wiki. If the sex and sexuality is an honest part of the work and relevant to the example, it belongs there.
  3. The wiki is not rated G. We aren't sanitizing the wiki for small children. Sex and sexuality are part of media and we aren't going to ignore them. This wiki is Family Friendly, not Unsupervised Small Child Friendly. This isn't an excuse to make work pages dirtier than the work itself, as the above No Lewdness section makes clear, but neither is it an excuse to make those pages cleaner than the work itself.

I rarely see people bring up that problem with Twilight and Flash anyway. Pony ages are so complicated anyway, for all we know they could be around 16-17 and ponies that age can start businesses that young in Equestria.

Diverting from the topic a bit, Memes.TV Tropes has some examples that were added a very long time ago, pre-P5, and thus reflect some...problematic aspects of the site culture back then. These examples are back to back (the first one being the worst, like what the fuck were we even doing):

  • The phrase 'loli rape bunker' has become popular after being used in a thread on the forums about a German/Swiss Hikikomori Otaku who bought a bunker to store all his loli rape doujinshi in, so that he could fap all the way through Armaggeddon. Disturbingly yet hilariously, many people on the forum have now changed their user location to say 'loli rape bunker' or a variation thereof.
  • On the forums, sex-related derails, sometimes described as "Tropers Are Horny Bastards". Forced derails tend to take the form of references to orange juice and Diablo II, following an attempt to derail the Fetishes thread.
    • The phrase "TAKE THAT SHIT TO FETISHES" has become a meme itself, whenever someone thinks that a sex related derail is imminent. Now known as "Get thee to The Nunnery!".

[up][up]If that's the case, why is Cheerilee a teacher and librarian despite being the same age as Pony Rarity as shown in a flashback and not a student? And before you ask, no she is not a student teacher, she is literally Rarity's age. I could go on and on for weeks as to why the ponies (Mane 6) are not teenagers while the human six aside from Sunset are (why else would they vaguely make Discord x Fluttershy canon if one is a minor and significantly younger than however old Discord is supposed to be? He sure as hell isn't a teenager!)

I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be an adult dating a minor, since the plot is dropped shortly after the second movie and the age of consent in Canada where the show was made is 16, thus if we go by Canadian law and not SoCalization (or whatever that trope is called now) she's an adult dating someone of age.

I don't think we need any Fanservicey tropes for Starfox or any other furry thing either as the extremist furry tropers will run wild with them and the last thing we need is for people to accuse this wiki of zoophilia, despite anthro (and by extension talking animals) being different from traditional non sapient animals.

There is an even more questionable relationship in the Camp Everfree movie, where one of the camp counselors has a crush on Sunset Shimmer and keeps hitting on her.

For some reason EG is not really good at picking appropriate relationships. Perhaps it is for the better that dating did not play any role in the main cartoon.

Oh wait, there is one in the main show: Rarity's relationship with Spike, a kid dragon who has a crush on her, which becomes increasingly creepy every time it appears because Rarity doesn't discourage this and even takes advantage of it sometimes.

Which culminates in the season 9 episode where Rarity has become completely dependent on Spike for getting anything done, until Spike starts losing interest in her and gets a crush on a dragon girl his own age instead, which turns Rarity into a jealous, manipulative stalker who tries everything to get his affection back, including breaking into his room and watching him until he wakes up.

Talk about What Were They Thinking?... What an episode to push in a kids show.

If the work does actually play an anthro animal for fanservice, as some works tend to do, we can trope that objectively.

Er, if by "dragon girl" you mean Gabby, a griffon, who Spike only liked platonically, and Rarity did indeed get desperate but she never stayed in his room all night. She just tricked Spike into spending more time with her than with Gabby.

Unless we're not talking about the same episode, I have no idea where you got this information from.

Also, what "extremist furry tropers" are you even talking about? I've yet to see any perverted gushing in relation to anthropology characters.

[down] Whoops, already forgot about the whole Krystal thing. Nevertheless, that's still the only incident of such that I can remember.

[up] There was the fox girl from Starfox before that someone was gushing over, but that's not exclusively a furry thing. Humans also attract way too much sexual gushing on this site. Hell, even Equestria Girls isn't furry stuff.

[up]At least Kirby (which has very few human or human-like characters) doesn't attract as much R34 as MLP for example (though the Face-to-Face mechanic in some Kirby games can be misinterpreted as Ho Yay as almost all the characters who can use this mechanic are either male or non-gendered).

About the Spike and Rarity thing, interspecies relationships are not that uncommon in kid's media.(Interspecies relationships? Perfectly okay. Homosexual ones? Were is this world going to?!) And it is just a crush, it is not like Rare agrees on it.

[up] I think it's more the issue that Spike is a child while Rarity is vaguely adult. Though I don't put too much stock into the characters' ages. Cheerilee is still a teacher in the Equestria Girls verse because she may as well be, the only reason the mane six are specifically teens now is for marketing purposes anyway.

Anyway this is derailing the conversation as this is more about hypotheticals, not about actual lewd content on pages.

Oh yeah, I was mistaken about those details. Rarity still acts pretty creepy though, and she does show up standing over his bed when he wakes up.

Also, since Rarity has a job and no less than three stores of her own, we can safely assume she is an adult.

And yes, Timber Spruce is 17, but he's also a camp counselor, so that's an iffy position to flirt with people.

Just a quick note that I spotted this example on An Arm and a Leg and i'm going to cut it off for obvious reasons.

  • Does it surprise anybody that even this trope has its own genre of internet pornography? Didn't think so. It's often depicted as an extreme (and permanent) form of bondage.

Jumping back to the page toppper - I'd have no problem with either removing such entries, or folderizing the page along the lines of memes dedicated to the wiki as a whole, forum memes, and a folder for dead/discredited memes that would include those and have a statement at the top stating that they were an artifact of their time and are no longer relevant.

This was added to Justice League Dark: Apokolips War:

  • Male Gaze: The camera likes to linger on Diana's cybernetic keister once she's reintroduced into the plot. Whether this is supposed to be Fanservice or Fan Disservice is genuinely unclear.

I'm not a native English speaker and I've never heard the expression "keister" before. Is it considered appropriate? I'm asking because the same troper also added this to the YMMV page:

  • Evil Is Sexy: Lady Shiva briefly returns in her curvaceous, leotard-wearing glory.

[up][up]It's a slang term that is often used by morally/legally gray characters, and is a bit dated. I don't know the work, but that may be an attempt to fit the tone of the setting.

It's certainly no more offensive than "Butt", and sounds less prudish than insisting on "Bottom" or "Rear end" at every opportunity.

[up] Nah, I think "keister" is just a fun word (I even used it in an entry a short while ago, albeit in the context of "work his keister off"). The actual problem with the example is that it admits it might be Fan Disservice, so it might not be an example of Male Gaze.

This was recently added to Who Framed Roger Rabbit:

  • The Up Skirt shot of Jessica is this due to the fact that the animators actually had the courage to include it. Is also the apex of Fanservice in family movies.

Ignoring that last sentence (not really up for a discussion on the difference between a PG rating in the 80s/90s vs. A PG rating today), I'm pretty sure Fanservice doesn't really belong in Awesome Moments...
