Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

I mean, the thing is, like I said, I'm not sure it's entirely true. I feel like a lot of the Anakin-haters didn't so much change their minds on him as they just went away, leaving the people who grew up with and enjoyed the prequels as a much bigger segment of the fandom.

There are also fans who do still hate Anakin, and the prequels in general, and just happen to find Kylo Ren and the sequel trilogy even worse. I know a couple people IRL who have this opinion.

Anyway, in cases like this, it's best to just discuss the matter with a cool head and avoiding taking sides, as it's pretty easy to fall into that temptation.

It might also be nostalgia. Fans who were young when the prequels came out likely have a better view of Anakin than fans who grew up with the original trilogy did. Now those fans are the adults discussing the franchise online.

The Clone Wars also presented a pretty different version of Anakin that likely contributed to a softening view on him.

I don't think the entry is that negative. It's critical of Kylo, and could probably incorporate some other points about Anakin besides comparing the two, but I don't find it complainy.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

On FandomRivalry.Video Games, this Konami example gets into this weird, spiteful snark at the end.

  • Konami is a peculiar example. The fandoms weren't bickering about which franchise got the most attention, but which franchise deserved the comeback the most though they still accuse Konami for caring more for either pachinko, mobile... or Japanese-exclusive franchises. But for the most part, the loudest would be the fandom of Metal Gear and Silent Hill since they believed themselves to be the most screwed by Konami after the controversy, to the point that sometimes, fandom of Castlevania, Contra or peculiar ones like Suikoden just felt like saying "Hey, our franchise also equally deserves good treatments instead of just Metal Gear and Silent Hill, you know? We can agree to yell obscenities at Konami, but what makes you think you're the most suffering, thus most deserving attention? We suffered too!"

Does this entry from LightNovel.Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro Chan sound like complaining?

Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Sakura endures abuse and misfortune from female angels, especially Dokuro-chan, which is played for Black Comedy. If Dokuro-chan and Sakura's relationship was about a guy torturing a woman instead, this would be a different series altogether.
For the record, while I didn't add it, I edited it partially because it originally was clearly gushing about how "funny" it is. The reason why I'm asking is because, despite the fact I'm a girl, Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male is one of my least favorite Tropes. (You can thank this series for at least having a part in why that is.)

Permission to remove this from YMMV.RWBY Ice Queendom?

  • Author's Saving Throw: Certain critics of RWBY disliked how Weiss was able to get over her prejudice towards the Faunus after a single night at the end of Volume 1, finding that the issue resolved itself too quickly. Ice Queendom, which elaborates on events shortly after Volume 1, reveals that Weiss didn't in fact get over her prejudice, with the premise of Weiss having to be rescued from the Nightmare's Psychological Torment Zone being a vehicle for the Character Development that would lead to Weiss taking a level in kindness in Volume 2.

The original show had a fandom-wide complaint about how Fantastic Racism was handled in the show (a complaint the creators acknowledged as valid). Weiss was only a fraction of that complaint, used more as a symptom of the wider problem than an issue in her own right. I think this entry knows that, hence the wishy-washy "certain critics" language. The anime is a Japanese creation and has nothing to do with how the western fandom feels about the original show, which is what AST is supposed to be about.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up]Well, it is possible for people behind Japanese adaptations to look at complaints fro the Western audience when adapting a work. That entry also isn't talking about the show's Fantastic Racism in general, just from Weiss. EDIT: Therefore, I would have worded that differently, though I agree that that entry should be deleted.

If you reread my post, you'll see that's my point: the AST entry does not reflect what the original show's racism complaint was and is trying to make it all about Weiss when that wasn't originally the case.

Something I didn't add was that the anime isn't even addressing Weiss's original prejudice because she is objectively an Adaptational Jerkass who has a level of racism in the anime she never had in the original show. Now, some of the original fandom hate the fact she's been transformed into Putting on the Reich just for this anime storyline, and some fans like it. That's fine, there are plenty of YMMV options for people to use to cover all that, but it's not AST, and I think the entry knows that, given its use of Weasel Words like "some critics".

The thing about Dokuro-chan is that it is very much a parody of Japanese love comedies that pushes the tsundere trope to its logical extreme. That it is unfair to the boy, and that he keeps returning to her against all common sense, is the point. Saying "it would be a different series altogether" is true, but more because the parody angle would be lost than because it would seem less acceptable. I don't think Double Standard fits there, because the entire show runs on sadistic comedy and Sakura being constantly killed by Dokuro is only the most common form.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

[up]Yeah, I'm aware it's a parody and it has loads of Black Comedy. However, the point of the post wasn't about if their relationship made sense or not; I was making sure the entry didn't sound like complaining since I hate the trope it discusses. Additionally, those aforementioned comedies (namely when they involve physical abuse) are often still guilty of that trope. EDIT: Also, even with the franchise's other bleak humor, this still meets the requirements for Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male.

How I Met Your Mother is hard to navigate specifically because it's split by season, but a lot of entries about the finale or about Lily's behavior get really complainy. It's on the complaining sandbox but I just wanted to alert people. There's also some Hypocrite entries that don't seem intentional and are just complaining about character behavior.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Rebecca really pissed me off in this part. I'm willing to cut her some slack, but she really took that slack for granted.
