Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

I found this under Rape as Backstory:

  • The manga Asa mo, hiru mo, yoru mo does this with the heroine's backstory, with the main plot being that a guy she has to work with for school looks like her rapist. Incredibly, IT'S PLAYED FOR LAUGHS.

Remove the caps and italics and pothole just replace it with "It's played for laughs." Also probably comment it out as it's partial-context.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

  • Sex Sells: The only difference between this game's ads and Evony ads is that the ads for this one are more accurate.

That Evony jab is pretty needless IMO.

Here are some entries on Bailey Pickett in "The Suite Life Movie" that I find to be blown out of proportion:

  • Became Their Own Antithesis: After finding out Cody was going for an internship over the spring break, Bailey ends up having a Faceโ€“Heel Turn and becomes an Alpha Bitch who hates Cody and decides to make him miserable and abuse him. However, after seeing Cody's letter explaing why, she realises how horrible and selfish she became and decides to make it up to him.

  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In "The Suite Life Movie", when Cody has to go for an internship in hopes of getting him into Yale with Bailey, she ends up turning into a narcissistic, cold and borderline sociopathic Jerkass who betrays Cody out of spite, which would almost qualify her as a Villain Protagonist in that movie.

  • Why Would Anyone Take Her Back?: Bailey was nothing but toxic and abusive towards Cody when he decided to go to an internship over spring break with her and doesn't want to know the reason why. She then spends the entire movie emotionally and mentally abusing Cody and threatening to cut him out of her life and guilt tripping him. But even after all this, Cody and others still forgive her for her betrayal.

Sure, Bailey was a Woman Scorned, but I don't recall her actually abusing Cody and trying to make him miserable. And is "Betrayal" really the right word?

I don't recall the first one happening at all. Bailey was mad. She dumped him, IIRC. She didn't "abuse" him. She just sort of yelled at him.

Granted, it's been ages since I saw the movie, but I certainly don't recall Bailey being that cruel. (It's also sort of funny to see Bailey get bashed on so hard when in the show itself, if anything Cody is often the toxic one...)

Suite Life on Deck was overall a major downgrade from its predecessor, and a lot of the cast being more unpleasant, selfish and/or moronic was a major issue. Given the general poor writing, I wager that those entries are more or less accurately describing what happened with Bailey and Cody in the movie but itโ€™s using the wrong terminology and likely being hyperbolic. For example, being a naggy and/or unreasonable girlfriend is a different thing than being an Alpha Bitch.

I suggest someone should rewatch the movie, wager if the points are (fundamentally) accurate, and then reword them to be less hyperbolic. If I were to take a shot in the dark, it's likely a case of Bailey being guilty of Took a Level in Jerkass and Poor Communication Kills (maybe also Cody for the latter).

This is on Replacement Scrappy under a section involving the Disney Theme Parks in the Theme Park folder:

  • This trope was taken to its extreme when in March 2018, it was announced that a bug's land, an under-traveled part of Disney California Adventure known primarily for run-of-the-mill children's rides, would be replaced with a long-awaited Marvel Land, which fans assumed would be placed in the empty land to the southeast of Mission: Breakout. Yes, either there were silent swaths of fans of Heimlich's Chew Chew Train, or Disney Theme Park fans run primarily off of They Changed It, Now It Sucks!. Granted, the land was quite popular with parents of young children for that very reason, but given that Fantasyland has "gentle" rides while maintaining popularity with older guests, combined with the relative unpopularity of A Bug's Life, it was a given that the land would be given the ax in a park with such limited free real estate soon enough.

The way it's written comes off as complaining about people complaining about the change.

Isnโ€™t the trope limited to characters?

that one is definitely Complaining About People Not Liking the Show considering that it already acknowledges that a bug's land was popular with families, and avengers campus, upon opening, gained a reputation of being very mid-tier and shoehorned in for a lot of fans. i could try to salvage it but it might just be better to write a new example

This Volume 7 entry on the Recap.RWBYV 7 E 13 The Enemy Of Trust is closet complaining. It's a bit of a weird one actually because, looking at the edit history, I'm actually the one at fault for the current wording. The original entry was even worse, and included inaccuracies. So, I corrected the inaccuracies and I don't think I did a very good job at removing the complaining.

Current Entry

  • Idiot Ball: When Team JNR and Oscar confront Neo, Jaune tells Neo to give up because they've got her outnumbered. The team then proceeds to attack Neo, one after the other, as individuals. Neo therefore has plenty of time to dispatch each member before the next one decides to attack. When guards spot them, they are forced to run. However, Oscar is so exhausted, he cannot keep up with Team JNR and loses sight of them. Despite the fact they were supposed to protect Oscar and the Relic, this oversight makes him easy prey for Neo who easily obtains it. In the previous episode, Team RWBY defeats the strongest Huntsman team in Atlas yet Team JNR fails to defeat Neo, a single opponent who makes them look like amateurs. In order to set up the loss of the Relic to create a new conflict for Volume 8, it requires Team JNR to be incapable of team-work despite the fact that its leader, Jaune, is supposed to be the natural tactician amongst the heroes of both teams.

Original Entry

  • Idiot Ball: JNR displays a lack of teamwork and combat awareness despite being experts on these factors. Ren and Nora rush Neo on separate turns instead of facing her together and are easily dispatched by the latter. The group is supposed to protect Oscar who holds the relic but they lose sight of him during their escape because Oscar is too exhausted to keep up. When Neo finally gets the relic and Jaune chases after her, she hides behind three regular soldiers who open fire and, rather than push his team forward, Jaune orders them to run away from enemies who are no match for him or his team. In the previous episode, Team RWBY was able to defeat the strongest team of Atlas yet JNR failed to defeat a single enemy who made them all look like amateurs. It displays a major gap of ability between two teams who are supposed to be equals and it's evident the team needed to be incompetent in order to lose the relic and set up a new conflict for the next volume.

While Jaune is a strategist, his team has been shown to be resistant to strategising attacks since Volume 3. In fact, the beginning of Volume 7 even lampshaded Team JNR's habit of not making plans and rushing head-first into a conflict. A more experienced fighter diplomatically observed "A very... head first approach", to which Jaune sheepishly replied "That's just... kinda our style". So them rushing Neo isn't dropping a ball, it's their normal style. Also, the two teams opponents are very different threat levels: Neo is a high level threat performing at her best while the Ace-Ops is a high level threat who are performing very badly, which gets exploited by Team RWBY (it's obvious during the fight, but it's later confirmed that Team RWBY only won because Ace-Ops were below par).

The fight also takes place in a corridor. It's wide enough for four people to pose side-by-side with weapons drawn, but it's not wide enough for a true four-on-one fight to occur. Their weapons and fighting styles would also interfere with each other if they tried (Nora's weapon is a grenade launcher, which needs unobstructed line-of-sight, and a warhammer, which needs space around her; Ren's weapon is a bladed grappling gun, so he has to fight in close combat or have an unobstructed line-of-sight; Jaune and Oscar don't have ranged weapons, so have to fight close combat).

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Found this on Literature

  • The Maximum Ride series was originally planned to end after Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports. Many fans think that this should've happened, as it resolved everything except the Fang/Max subplot (In that version of the plot, Jeb really was the voice), and there was a significant drop in quality after that book. Angel was supposed to be the next finale to the series, then the next book Nevermore was, and then Maximum Ride Forever was released.

Like I agree with it but still complainey.

[up][up] I don't think it is, but I wanted a second opinion on whether this is a pull or a rewrite. I do think it's possible that a Failed a Spot Check example could be built from the fact that Jaune (as team-leader) and JNR (in general) somehow failed to notice that Oscar was falling behind until it was too late.

[up] Yeah, AR feelings about how good expanded material is has nothing to do with the trope. The trope is just about a trilogy that ends up not being limited to three books because a decision is made somewhere to keep the story world going through new material. So, the entry should just be telling us what the original trilogy was supposed to be, and what the expansion ended up being — if the decision for why it kept going is publicly known, adding that in is a bonus.

Hoes this for a revised entry?

  • The Maximum Ride series was originally planned to end after Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, but then The Final Warning was released and then Angel was supposed to be the next finale to the series, then the next book Nevermore was, and then Maximum Ride Forever with more books coming out after that, with over 10 books total.

Also that entry was outdated since even more books had come since then.

I'd say a trope like Trilogy Creep will inherently involve complaining to some extent, much like Seasonal Rot and such. I think the biggest issue with this entry is that it's a bit reductive and maybe could use a little elaboration.

[up][up] It looks like Maximum Ride Forever is the finale, with the books after that being a sequel series. The author's website has them both on the "Maximum Ride" page, but under separate headers: "THE ADVENTURES OF MAXIMUM RIDE" and "HAWK"

  • The Maximum Ride series was originally planned to end after Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, but then The Final Warning was released and then Angel was supposed to be the next finale to the series, then the next book Nevermore was, and then finally Maximum Ride Forever, with a Sequel Series Hawk coming after.

Sorry if this isn't complaining but this is on Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022), under Sweet Pete's folder, under Does This Remind You of Anything?:

  • As noted by various critics, his circumstances are horrifying similar to Bobby Driscoll's (Peter Pan's voice actor) fate, which Disney was responsible for. Feels like a serial killer proudly displaying its actions.

It may be an example, but the way it's written feels... Off to me.

Sorry if there isn't a problem...

Do we need the first part "as noted by critics"? It's kind of Word Cruft-y.

It'll also need to be expanded too, since I don't think the example has enough context as is.
