Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

[up][up][up][up]Whoever added that pothole probably thinks Looney Tunes is one of the lewdest cartoons ever made, considering how many animals in it don't wear anything at all.

The first sentence sounds complainy, but I could be wrong.

The latter part of this example on Hollywood Pudgy about BoJack Horseman makes me uncomfortable.

  • BoJack himself; he's actually in okay shape considering he's a middle-aged alcoholic, but since he actually does live in Hollywood, surrounded by borderline anorexics who all look like they're near death most of the time, it does make him look fatter.

It'd be one thing if this was how the show depicted Hollywoo, but the population seen in the show is pretty varied in body size (a few examples), which suggests this entry is describing real Hollywood residents as "borderline anorexics who look like they're near death" (especially since it refers to Hollywood and not Hollywoo as it's called in the show) which feels...very unnecessary and in poor taste. Can I cut that part out of this example?

Before I add this to Fandom-Enraging Misconception, does anyone have any suggestions for revisions?

  • The Mandalorian fans could get peeved by people who act as if Pedro Pascal's involvement consists only of dubbing over fully-armored stuntmennote , despite how often he recalls to news outlets his own difficulties of moving around and conveying emotions in the armor, or the existence of pictures of him wearing the Beskar suit sans helmet.note  Especially irritating cases question Disney's decision to give top billing to an actor who doesn't perform the action scenes himself, as these cases seem to underestimate the importance of Pascal's expressive body language in parts with no action, and/or the difficulties of voice acting.

I don't know the work or the fandom, but "could get" is a warning sign. It's only an example if fans actually do get enraged about it.

Re-reading how fans reacted to this on other message boards, it seems more like a Fandom-Irritating Misconception than a Fandom-Enraging Misconception.

I was browsing Deconstruction Fic and came across " Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past frequently points out how absurdly naive the characters, plot and general feel of the series are, as a side effect of its Peggy Sue plot."

That seems pretty bashy to me and it doesn't even explain what it deconstructs.

Under the Films - Animation section of Overshadowed by Controversy:

  • Media coverage of the 2019 Spanish animated feature Elcano & Magallanes: First Trip Around the World was skewed more towards the outrage it generated when Filipinos took umbrage over its depiction of Lapu Lapu and the Battle of Mactan. Misplaced Nationalism ensues when Filipinos, whose elementary school textbook knowledge of their country's history is a little distorted to say the least, took to social media and bashed the living daylights out of the film. The catch is that most of the outrage came from those who haven't even watched the whole film yet and were motivated more by blind patriotism than sincere and level-headed perception of history. Said Filipinos are under the impression that Lapu-Lapu fought for the Philippines as a whole as the first to resist colonial rule, something Rodrigo Duterte played up and over-hyped in a statement; historians disagree with this, as the Philippines as we know it is a modern concept, and the archipelago was at the time made up of mostly unconnected tribal polities who fought wars against each other for whatever reason. Another thing was that Magellan and his posse weren't necessarily plotting to conquer any land, and were more into trading spices than anything else. Magellan did have chieftain Rajah Humabon and his consort Humamay converted to Catholicism, but other than that, it was mostly a trade expedition. It wasn't until 1565 when King Philip II spearheaded the conquest of the Philippines through a Spanish expedition of five hundred men led by Miguel López de Legazpi. To top it all off, a Rappler columnist bluntly pointed out the hypocrisy in an editorial where he noted how the producers of the 2013 religious historical drama Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir had no qualms about portraying the Chamorro people as barbaric savages who slayed Calungsod for his missionary work—the film was universally praised in the Philippines, and was unsurprisingly panned by the Chamorros in Guam.

Now, I only know about the film due to the Saberspark review, but is really necessary to do all this "Well, ackshually the Filipinos have no moral ground" stuff with the entry? As far as I know from the review, the film was originally marketed (and prompted immense backlash) by showing the Portuguese as the heroes and Lapu-Lapu as the Big Bad, but as it turns out this poster was rather inaccurate, as the Big Bad role is for some original Portuguese character and Lapu-Lapu only briefly cameos and isn't even named.

[up] That actually came up in the OBC cleanup but kind of got buried. The tangent makes it clear the troper is taking a side, and I'm not familiar enough with the material to say whether it's right or not, but either way it's not relevant to the entry to go on a long history rant. At least the part about the Rappler column might be relevant since it's about the actual movie.

I found these in Breath of Fire and the video game section for Germans Love David Hasselhoff:

  • The series is often joked about by fans as being Capcom's most-hated IP, as it's one of the few ones (and certainly the most prominent) not to appear in the Capcom vs. line. Instead, it was relegated to crappy mobile game status because, "If your name isn't Final Fantasy it doesn't sell." That's a real quote. Admittedly, Ryu and a few other characters do appear in the "Hero and Heralds" card battle mode in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3; the producers said they were considering Nina from Breath of Fire 1 or Fou-Lu from IV, but ultimately declined to include them.

I feel like this could either be toned down about Capcom "hating" the series or removed all together, since it seems to be there as an excuse to hating Capcom for not doing anything with the series.

While it would have been nice to see Jon in MvC3, I feel like the way it's being said makes it feel like him being only a costume for Ammy is a Fate Worse than Death, way too exaggerated. Plus, I don't recall anyone actually hating the costume itself. I feel like this can be toned down as well and put a nice positive spin on it. For example:

Should I make the changes?

  • Fan Community Nicknames: Detractors often call his fans "enterbots", from the idea that their tendency to agree with Mr. Enter's viewpoints without question is akin to a bot programmed to dispense praise towards Mr. Enter.

I think it came up earlier, there's a lot of detail on the creator's controversial behavior that aren't really necessary.

Though probably my least favorite bit is an unrelated pothole to Memetic Molester on a quote of Cool Cat saying a child is pretty.

EDIT: Just tried to cut down some of the more complainy bits on the main page. Feels weird to play defense for Cool Cat.
