Did Mania not get some integrity back, or does it not count since it's not made by Sonic Team?

I think it did, but then Sonic Forces came and forked that integrity/goodwill in the butt.

Incidentally, voice actress Cristina Valenzuela is teasing something and it has something to do with the Sega Dreamcast...

She has no voice.

HMMMM

Did he?

(digs in RCS' twitter)

Oh he did. As did said writers he conversed with...

The plot thickens...

Purely out of curiosity, has Tikal had a new VA since they changed everyone?

Funnily enough, I always thought Cristina would make a great Tikal or Amy if Cindy Robinson wasn't already doing it. But as randomness4 pointed out, no, Tikal hasn't shown up since Adventure 1 (or Adventure 2).

Maybe a Dreamcast Classic?

Not sure what one would need a voice actor for a hypothetical Dreamcast Mini since it's basically a compilation of Dreamcast games...

Anyone think it's weird that Eggman is often the Token Human and they usually don't give an explanation when this is the case?

[up]up] Maybe I'm missing something but, from what I can recall, there's usually an explanation:

  • Games: Humans always existed off-screen. Eggman is just another human. As of Forces, I don't know what's canon right now. It looks like a World of Funny Animals and Word of God insists it is so, but ten bucks they pull a "The humans were conveniently off-screen" when they decide to bring them back within ten years.
  • Promotional Comic: Judging by the Bible, Sonic lives amongst humans. So Robotnik is just another human.
  • AOSTH: Never clarified.
  • SatAM: Never clarified.
  • STC: Humans are from an alien planet called Earth. I don't actually remember how Kintobor ended up on Mobius, but he's from Earth.
  • Archie: I don't think it was originally clarified, but it was later noted that Mobius is Earth All Along, so Robotnik is just another overlander/human.
  • Underground: Never clarified.
  • X: They had literally one line that Eggman was from Earth but never mentioned how he got to Sonic's World or why he can't remember being born on Earth.
  • Boom: Never clarified.
  • Movie: Currently unknown. Some rumors say Sonic is an alien or at least an Uplifted Animal, but we don't know yet. I hope it's a Lions and Tigers and Humans... Oh, My! scenario but my brain is betting it's either "Sonic's from another dimension/planet"-style Sonic X scenario or "We'll barely mention the talking 3' hedgehog"-style ala Alvin and the Chipmunks.

In the "Not clarified" scenarios, you can always pull the "Humans are animals so Eggman is considered an ape" scenario or an "The series is After the End" scenario.

  • Actually regarding the upcoming movie, it was already confirmed by Paramount that Sonic would be from a planet of anthropomorphic animals and get transported to Earth via an unknown accident.

  • With SatAm, I believe it was confirmed that it was planned for Season 3 to reveal that Mobius was Earth after a nuclear war had wiped out the human race and caused the animals to become sapient. Doctor Robotnik and Snively were to be revealed as part of a space colonisation team that was off-world when the war was taking place, and returned to Earth/Mobius centuries later as a side-effect of relativity based time dilation.

  • Word of God since 2010 regarding the games is that there are two worlds, one human world (where Eggman and his Grandfather are from, and the setting of the Adventure Games, 06 and Unleashed) and one animal world (where Sonic and the rest of the cast are from, and the setting of Heroes and every 3D game from Colors onwords). And that both Sonic and Eggman have access to portals that allow the cast to travel from one world to the other. Although given that this has allegedly only been part of the Sonic bible since 1998 when Adventure was released and that Forces has retconned the Classic and Moderns games to be in separate continuities, this probably only applies to the Modern Sonic games and the Classic Sonic games might still go by the "humans and anthropomorphic animals both live on the same world we just never see the humans apart from Eggman" explanation.

  • IDW, per Ian Flynn, same explanation as the Modern Sonic games above[up]. Mostly likely mandated by Sega, as Flynn has made it clear in the past that he doesn't buy the there are two separate worlds explanation.

[up] I'm aware of the Word of God on the games but I pin it under Writer Conflicts with Canon: If it'e been around since 1998 then it's very poorly implemented because there are numerous contradictions, and if it's a recent 2010-2016 retcon then it's still poorly implemented because nothing in the games makes it noticeable. If I wasn't involved in the fandom and played Sonic Forces, I would just be confused on where GUN is.

I wasn't aware about the movie news, though. That's so boring but I expected it.

How the hell does Angel Island fit the two world explanation anyway? In SA 1 it's shown existing in the human world. So was S3&K also set in the human world? Or does the isalnd somehow pass through the portal? They needed to actually show how this worked. It doesn't feel particularly relevant anyway; Humans don't seem to care about there being talking animals, none of Sonic characters act like being in the human world is a big deal either; apparently Amy and Big just live there like it's nothing. There's nothing to indicate there even are separate worlds. I think the only time I've seen something like it mentioned is in the OVA where Sonic and Tails actually do go through portals. I wonder if that was the start of all this, and the OVA was sort of meant to be canon in some ways.

In any case, I had always imagined that Robotnik had indeed come from a human society/world, and decided to try and conquer the animal world because it was relatively defenseless, save for Sonic. It's like Sonic is fighting an alien invader, but us humans are the aliens.

The franchise's early days always had a kind of environmental theme to them, with the evil industrialist human coming to destroy and exploit nature and wildlife. Satam really pushed it, and the theme kind of popped back up in Colors. It's not too heavy handed either, to the point I don't think it was entirely intentional, save for maybe in Sonic CD.

I like how CD handles it, it teaches you it's not the technology inherently evil, it's too much excess of it that is bad

They also show you technology can coexist with nature in the good futures

The 2 worlds thing is a clear indicator of Sonic Team overcomplicating stuff rather than looking for a good solution.

[up] It might be a misguided attempt at pandering to people who grew up with Mobius, but all it does it make things confusing (especially since both SatAM and Archie's went with Earth All Along). Either that or Sega is trying to come up with an excuse why there aren't any Funny Animal background extras besides "We didn't want to model them".

We have Sonic the Animation from 1994 which depicts Sonic in proto-Station Square with literally nothing mentioned, so the idea of the "Split universe" likely wasn't conceived until the Saturn era at latest.

Adventure itself contradicts the heck out of the idea. The echidnas and Chaos have always lived on Earth and Angel Island is obviously on Earth as well. Amy obviously lives in Station Square and Tails lives nearby... Adventure 2 makes everything worse. How did Gerald make an anthro hedgehog 50 years ago if these creatures are foreign and wouldn't appear for several decades? Why does literally no one seem astonished by Shadow's creation if no one has seen Funny Animals before?

Sega could make this way easier if it was "There are two continuities" rather than "The characters to through portals". Heck, just streamline it more and go with the Lions and Tigers and Humans... Oh, My! idea we've all been believing for two decades. I fully expect them to quietly retcon that eventually. Not many people seem to like Sonic's World much anyway; I've heard a lot of complaints about how boring it looks and how ugly the spherical trees are.

Can I just say how much of a shitty game Sonic 4 Episode 1 is? There are so many infuriatingly bad gameplay decisions everywhere and the game just looks ugly as sin and controls like absolute garbage. I made it as far as the level with the stupid torch gimmick before I quit. I spent three fucking minutes on that one "puzzle" where you have to light torches in order to make platforms move so you can get through because whoever designed that fucking "puzzle" hates humanity and clearly wanted people to suffer. I know what to do, I've done similar things countless times in other games, but the execution is completely impossible. I swear, the timing on the vertical platforms/walls is pseudo-randomized to ensure it either lasts longer than the horizontal one or it drops just as you get there. Even when I was using the beat of the song to time it out, nine beats would pass since I lit the torch but the wall didn't retract like when I tested it until after the platform I was standing on retracted.

Fuck that game, I'd rather play Sonic 06 because at least that game is So Bad, It's Good.

Is it worth it to just move on to Episode 2 or is that game also garbage?

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!
