Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
Arknights Others has hit the "too long" warning. It needs to be split.
THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!Funny.Schaffrillas Productions is displaying the warning.
I would either have his YTPs or ranking videos having a page of their own.
Probably the YTPs, since they're indexed under Funny. You Tube Poop.
EDIT: Did both.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (all editions) progress: 426/1089 (39.12%)During my crosswicking duties for a movie page, I noticed that Award-Bait Song got hit by the warning. The largest sections appear to be those of Disney/Pixar, both Films (Animated and Live-Action), and Video Games. Would it help to create subpages for those?
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Perhaps move Disney/Pixar to its own page first, then check if it's still over the limit before we move Film and Video Games.

Kirby is awesome.I admit I'm having quite the trouble here. Ideally, all Disney animated films and those of other companies should coexist in one subpage, while all Disney live-action films and those of other companies should coexist in another. I get that Disney has so many examples (and I myself am a big fan of several of those), but it's proving to be too difficult to distribute the examples by medium, since all Disney examples are lumped into one folder.
Would it still be kosher to have a subpage for all Disney examples, or would it be wiser to seggregate the examples by medium and then, alongside the remaining animated and live-action films, create two subpages? I just don't know if Disney should get a special treatment here.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300The Universal Genre Savvy Guide has the warning. We do have two sections that can serve as split ideas: by genre and by medium.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportIt also doesn't help that the Disney folder has non-standard example sorting (as do the other Film folders), or that some of the examples pertain to the Disney Theme Parks of all things. I almost want to say you should scrub the page for misuse first.
In any case, I think the other person may have been leading you astray in terms of general practices when splitting pages; generally we split the largest folders first, so the folders that most need their own page get one and we don't have to split again for a while, and Disney is the smallest of the folders you mentioned. Here's the size of my sandbox after copying over each folder:
- Video Games (without Visual Novels): 202 KB
- Live-Action Film (without Disney): 197 KB
- Animated Film (without Disney): 152 KB
- Anime and Manga: 151 KB (and that doesn't even include the Studio Ghibli folder!)
- Disney: 146 KB
- Theatre: 116 KB
If you don't want to try and merge the Disney examples with the larger Film folders, and there isn't significant enough misuse to change things, you can split off Video Games first as the largest single folder. But since this is a quintessentially film trope, it would make sense to merge the Disney examples and split one of the Film folders. (My hunch is that Animated Film would be the larger of the two, but I didn't want to try and integrate the Disney examples while adhering to the chronological order, or go through the hassle, both in terms of work and in terms of potential complaining, of re-sorting them alphabetically.)
Alright, I'll get to it tonight unless someone else beats me to it, thanks!
(Another reason why I hadn't done any split last night is because I was majorly editing a different page in the meantime, and I just caught wind of this other page's size)
EDIT: Sorry for the half-day delay. I was too fatigued last night to do the split (and I have to confess that playing video games got me distracted for too long), but I just did so now. Gave the LA Film and Video Game folders subpages. I figured I would also give the former a subpage as well since it was already the second-largest.

Some seem to be worth moving to Perfectly Arranged Marriage, in the Anime?

Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.May require a bit of research if dungeons could be categorized. ((Probably (Realm Wiki))
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThe following commented-out note is on the page:
Message sent to the user who added the note to inform them.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportI'd rather not respect unilateral notes. I'm not sure what the Realms update would bring that would heavily affect page's organization that can't be resolved now, but 1. The problem is now 2. The update would imply first adding a lot of content to already red page then splitting it.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupWhen I saw the overly-long warning, I added the note because intend to make the split myself soon after the major update drops (without any of the implications as the above post claims). The changes are going to be so extensive that any split made beforehand will have to be revised anyway. It's only a few months away, and I'm willing to tolerate the warning for now (after all, other than that warning, the page still works fine).
And if the page truly needs to be split immediately with no delays, then I'd rather it be done by myself (and not someone with zero familiarity with the work).

Just to check -
FirstnameI has just split Spider-Man's trope list into four smaller pages.
I believe it was long enough to show warnings, so probably needed the split, but I can't see any discussion here (and FirstnameI hasn't posted on the forums for months), so it's presumably unilateral.
Any concerns about the way it's been done? I've had a quick look and didn't spot anything.

MohsRockMetal.Levels 1 To 3 is displaying the warning.
MohsRockMetal.Levels4and 5 is probably getting close too (the size of the file when I download it is big enough I'm honestly a bit surprised it's not triggering the warning). Maybe reorganize them as 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5? Worth noting that 4 and 5 seem to be roughly equal in length, at least just looking at the page.
Edited by MorganWick on Sep 18th 2023 at 2:04:05 AM
, I'd say split each one to a page...at a minimum, split 3 - 5 to their own pages.
Funny.Da Things is displaying the warning.
The "Television YTP" folder could be split off to a subpage.
ShoutOut.Video Games has become so Reference Overdosed, it now has the warning.
"Rarity, are you okay? We gotta get you and your friends outta here soon!"
Characters.Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation was added to the Overly Long Pages list. I gave my thoughts (and a question) on its discussion page but I'm bringing it up here for anyone who wants to check for misuse.
