YMMV / Unicorn Wars

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The film is visually gorgeous to look at, with the pastel color scheme along with the fluid animation to compliment the Sugar Apocalypse theme of this film.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Snuggles offering Tubby a look at his dick after Tubby takes care of his injured foot. Made even weirder by Snuggles giving a wide smile while he says it. Tubby and him never interact again for the rest of the movie, making the whole exchange rather bizarre and out of place.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • After keeping the war going for their own purposes and also abusing the bears under their command while they lived luxurious privileged lifestyles it's nothing short of satisfying when Commander Otto and his inner circle are all assassinated by Bluey's coup.
    • It can be satisfying to see Tubby finally stand up to Bluey and beat the snot out of him for all the bullying he put him through. And while his death happens simultaneously as the world goes to Hell, seeing Bluey pay for all his monstrous actions when the entity devours him as he helplessly tries to escape is a satisfying end for him.
  • Complete Monster: Colonel Otto is the supreme commander of the bear military and the main perpetrator of the violent war between bears and unicorns, with which he seeks to expand his rule over the forest by wiping out the unicorns. Viewing other bears as beneath him, Otto trains the soldiers under his rule to become violent and ruthless, treating any kindness or companionship as useless, treating any freak injuries as acceptable "collateral damage" and sending out those who are deemed too weak to die in pointless missions in enemy territory in addition to keeping his troops in miserable conditions while he and his inner circle enjoy a life of luxury. Promoting Bluey to the figurehead of the army when he survives his squadron's near-complete wipeout for the sake of propaganda, Otto spurs his worst tendencies and only opposes Bluey's final plan to burn down the forest in its entirety because it would deprive him of the war with which to control the bear populace.
  • Crack Pairing:
    • A growing number of fans love to ship Padre and Sergeant Ironstroke. This is despite the two not being on friendly terms and with the latter clearly disdainful of the former. At one point, an enraged and crazed Ironstroke slices Padre's face with his knife and would have done worse were it not for Tubby and Coco pulling him away. However, it's likely this negative and tense relationship is exactly why fans ship them.
    • Gemelos Mimosín (The Cuddly-Wuddly Twins) are explicitly named as brothers in the film; this hasn’t stopped fans from shipping them as a couple, due to culturally misinterpreting their fraternal affection (albeit uncomfortably enthusiastic), or writing it off as Twincest.
    • At one point Snuggles accuses Tubby of trying to peep at him while he was urinating. Afterwards a lizard bites Snuggles on the toe causing Tubby to bandage him up, while doing this Snuggles offers to let him see his penis. Tubby does not reciprocate and runs away in fear, but that hasn't stopped fans from shipping them anyways.
    • Bluey and his subordinate Pompon have gotten a large amount of art and attention from fans.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Corporal Pom Pom has a large number of fans, despite his minimal screentime. It is also common for fans of the movie to ship him with Azulin.
    • Captain Snout also has a decent number of female fans, despite only being a side character that serves the colonel.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Tubby's experiences in the Magical Forest while taking care of Maria.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Fans of Happy Tree Friends were quick to latch onto the film; while the tones are drastically different, with HTF being a Subverted Kids' Show Black Comedy while Unicorn Wars is a dark war drama, the bloody violence juxtaposed with a cute, preschool-esque art direction nonetheless drew many comparisons. It doesn't hurt that HTF also happens to feature a bear character, Flippy, who partook in a bloody war.
  • Love to Hate: Bluey may be a completely nasty piece of work with virtually no lasting redeeming traits, but he's nonetheless loved by fans for said depravity and cruelty.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Bluey isn't the most pleasant person to be around as he bullies his brother Tubby and is rather antagonistic to anyone who is better than him. However, he definitely crossed the line when he murders Coco in cold blood and even cannibalizes him. He gets even worse from there, eventually killing his own brother Tubby as well.
    • The colonel of the army, Otto, sends out his recent recruits out on a suicide mission, simply because they are incompetent, viewing any and all horrific deaths that he may have caused by doing this as "collateral damage".
  • Nausea Fuel:
    • We get treated to the sight of Snuggle's inflamed and infected foot, and it isn't pretty in the slightest.
    • The mutilated and decayed bodies of the ravaged Lone Owl squad is shown in very graphic detail. Special mention goes to one shot where a soldier's empty eye socket is filled with maggots.
  • No Yay: An early Establishing Character Moment from the Cuddly-Wuddly Twins has them kissing in the mouth, while wearing nothing but their underwear.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Some fans of the movie paint Gordi in a bit more unfavorable light, particularly due to an arguement between the two brothers, where Azulin calls Gordi a "manipulator", with said fans interpretting this as meaning that Gordi purposefully had deprived Azulin of Mama's love when Gordi states "at least he's not a murderer". This is despite the fact that in this same conversation, Azulin has the gall to claim he "loved her more" despite purposefully poisoning her and not reciprocating when she tries to show him love, and chastises Gordi for the fact that he called Azulin out for his generally awful behavior: shifting the blame on wetting the bed on him in front of the whole bunker, how he abuses him constantly, and how he killed Coco rather coldly, whilst claiming he did the last one "for them".
  • Ugly Cute: Even though Gordi was clearly designed to be "ugly" by the Teddy Bear society's standards, you can't help but just want to hug the guy for his adorably affable personality.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: In a similar vein to Alberto Vasquez's previous film, do not let the cute character designs and the bright colors fool you. The movie is very violent and has tons of Nightmare Fuel, not to mention some rather brief moments of nuditynote  and social-political commentary that wouldn't be very appealing to kids in the first place.
    • Oddly enough, despite being billed as an adult-oriented animation, it's given a 13+ rating on Prime Video.
  • The Woobie: It is really hard not to feel bad for all of the crap that Gordi has to go through throughout the entire movie, having lost his mother because of his twin brother, said twin brother abusing him constantly, his father showing more affection towards said twin brother over him, being forced to go to the military despite being utterly unfit for it, being a laughing stock amongst the other soldiers, being sent out into the forest by his superiors and deemed "colatteral damage", becoming the pack mule of the squad, witnessing the deaths of all of his colleagues, watching his brother kill Coco, and finally having his own brother kill him.
